UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Richt, players ready to get started

Greetings from the auditorium of UGA’s Rankin Smith Academic Achievement Center, just across Sanford Drive from the Woodruff Practice Fields. We’ve just completed interviews at media day here and, in a few hours, will make our way over to the football complex for the first practice of the 2007 season.

Quickly, I’ll give you a rundown of what was said over here. The day began with opening remarks from head coach Mark Richt, who then fielded questions from a media contingent of a couple of dozen. After that we interviewed selected players in an open Q&A session in the student lounge. Some of the players in attendance included QB Matthew Stafford, WR Sean Bailey, TBs Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin, LB Brandon Miller, DTs Jeff Owens and Kade Weston, OL Fernando Velasco, PK Brandon Coutu and S Kelin Johnson. I may have missed one or two (apologies if I did) but that’s whom I immediately recall seeing. I didn’t talk to them personally but I think we hit them all between Carter Strickland and me. We’ll report some of what was said immmediately and some of the other stuff we’ll be saving for stories and features we’ll be offering daily from now through the end of the regular season.

Quickly, here are some of the things Richt said. I’ll update throughout the day in the comments section more on Richt and then some comments from the players:

General comment on starting practices: “We’ve been working hard and are ready to go. The guys actually went out this morning and walked through assignments with their coaches, offense, defense and special teams. Everything starts in earnest today. We’ll be in shorts today, the first of the five-day acclimation period, then we’ll have five days of one-a-days, then two-a-day, one-a-day, two-a-day until school starts. We have 29 practice opportunities until our first ballgame against Oklahoma State. I feel very good about our team . I feel good about the way we finished last year and I feel very good about the momentum we carry in from the offseason. The guys worked hard and came back looking in great shape.”

On offensive lineman Ian Smith quitting on Friday: “He came to see me yesterday and said he had decided for health reasons he did not want to pursue playing football anymore… . He will stay with our program. He will continue to utilize our athletic and academic resources and be part of our program and part of our family. He just won’t be one of the 85 anymore.”

On suspending TE Tripp Chandler and QB Blake Barnes for the first game: I felt like the punishment was about right for what happened. That’s why I chose that amount of time. Of course, there’s a lot of other things those guys have to do. There’s other things that are involved… . Punishment, education, love. That’s the cornerstone of discipline here and at home with my family.”

On whether there is a discipline problem, or the perception of one: “There’s not a discipline problem on our team at all, I don’t think. We’ve had some guys make some mistakes. Some may say it was minor. I don’t know. Everything they do that’s against the rules or against the law is wrong. Some are more minor than others, certainly. I’m not alarmed our shocked these guys are making some foolish mistakes. Some of them are relatively innocent, some of the scooter stuff.

“For instance, I know Caleb [King] knew his license was suspended. He had no idea you had to have a license to ride a scooter. Now he should have known that; we probably should have told him. But we only had him about a week. We had Scooter 101 in our team meeting yesterday. We did have that.

“NaDerris [Ward] was sitting behind a car that was indecisive abnout what to do at an intersection where the light was green. He decided to go around like I think most everybody in America would probably do. He gets stopped. But he did have a valid license from California but he didn’t have it on his body.

“Nonetheless, those are laws and they were broken. Those things happen. But I’m not alarmed at all. I think we have a very disciplined football team. I think we have a great bunch of guys that really care about doing things right. I’m excited about them… . And now we have a Scooter Policy.”

Mark if you don’t know that picking “HOOD RATS” to be the face of your football team is a problem, then you are a true FSU prophet for sure. B. Bowden said “kids will be kids.” Go to the Bail Bonds office on FRIDAY and sit in church on SUNDAY. Hey, Mike Vick has a cousin looking for a free ride to college.

They fired the coach before Richt because they said he didn’t have discipline. Richt has had twice as many players in trouble yet he makes light of the situation. Why the double standard?

u guys are idiots……college kids drink….the kid didnt have a license for a moped……the other kid left his license at home……no one got hurt, raped, shot, killed and no drugs were involved.

give me a break. the double standard is for u bloggers is they are “uga football players”. if it was your lame collective butts getting a ticket, it would be no big deal. right?

66mustang: There will be no slurs in here and I’ll kindly advise you not to refrain or be banned.

Tom: Georgia has had seven players arrested since the bowl game. They were for hpossession of a fake ID (Tanner Strickland), underage possession (Akeem Hebron twice, Tripp Chandler), misdemeanor simple assualt (walkon Tripp Taylor), open container and furnishing alcohol to a minor (Blake Barnes w/ Chandler), Caleb King (suspended license), NaDerris Ward (license not in possession). I wouldn’t say these are serious offenses.

Goody Richt two face. His perception by the Dawg Nation is laughable at best and stupid at worst. The perception is that everyone in Athens is persecuted by the Athens and UGA Police Departments and they’re out to get them. Well, they aren’t, they’re just doing their jobs and it’s just a matter of time until the nets bring in a whopper.

And always, remember….

Near a waterfall, at the mercy of the wind
and when a delicate leaf solicits a bird in
                                         the light of a sunrise, I see your profile;
with a gentle behaviour you make a request
to the sound of a sorrow, you’re praying to
the sun, and when a weeping arrives on your
delicate face recalling the past and a wasted
sweetheart remember, my grace, and always
reflect: it’s only a deception, and so it doesn't
matter, there’s even the sunshine when a light

Let me be the first to say thanks Chip for speaking up….you are right…they DID wrong, but werent serious and its been handled.

You guys that want to attack Coach Richt’s person and his faith…not sure what level of scum that comes to but in my opinion its classless. Kids WILL do wrong, but the staff there is doing what it can to discipline and teach them….tel ya what Tom, you and 66mustang…YOU be in charge of that number of young men and let’s see how YOU do keeping them from drinking, and riding scooters….24/7-365….

Let’s talk about football. Good luck Coach Richt….MY football Coach..

And now I read where two Athens cops are in trouble for DUI. They don’t have enough common sense to enforce the law with any discretion. Arresting kids for moped violations, for underage drinking violations (some of the stupidest laws ever enacted in American history), yet guilty of DUI. It is no perception: the Athens/Clarke Country Police force and their UGA cohorts have significantly abused their position by making a mockery of the law. Anyone who cannot distinguish between major issues which damage other people’s lives, property, and independence and minor issues which hurt NO ONE does not deserve to be in law enforcement. I’m proud of Richt for putting this in proper perspective and for helping bring to light how out of touch with reality law enformcement in Athens has become.

The Athens/UGA cops are not picking on football players. They are picking on everybody. It’s called profiling (DWC)…driving while in Clarke. Just the FB players names make the paper. There are enough nit-picking laws on the books to keep the coffers full of $$$ and the cops in their jobs. OK, write the tickets but all this arresting, handcuffing and bail is ridiculous.

Here’s some player reports/comments …

Brandon Miller: He said he’s probably up to 80 percent as far as knowing everything he has to know and being able to play full out on instinct. He said that’s up from 50 percent at the start of spring practice to 70 percent after that. So he picked up 10 percent over the summer.

How often does somebody ask him about the transition to MLB? “Every day. Every person I see asks me about it. But it’s good. It’s an honest question. I don’t mind.”

What about Richt saying you’re the key to this season’s defense? “It’s a great tribute for him to say that. I already feel like I’m one of the leaders. Now I have to be more of a spoken leader, more of a communicator. Nobody’s telling me that. That’s just what I feel like personally. So that’s something I’m trying to work on.”

WR Sean Bailey, on criticism of the receiving corps (I’m writing a story on this group for Monday): “There’s definitely a chip on our shoulder. Any time you have critics out there saying things, you want to go out and prove them wrong. We use it as motivation. But we still have to play within ourselves and can’t let it get us down. We just want to be consistent and have fun.”

Thomas Brown, on the tailback competition and coming back from an ACL injury in nine months: “Anytime somebody new comes in [Knowshon Moreno, Caleb King], they’re going to be the hot topic. I don’t pay any attention to that. For me it’s more about proving I’ve recovered from the ACL. I’m back and better than ever. I’m not going to be timid and there’s not going to be a lack of mobility.”

Did he consider sitting out this season: “I never thought about it at all. I did my own research and I was able to determine that every ACL injury is different. To just tear the ACL like I did, 6 or 7 months and you’re pretty much done with rehab. Now it’s time to get ready to play.”

Amen about Richt having the courage to stand up and put things in perspective.

I have a daughter who has lived in Athens for three years now. Although she is not the greatest driver, even for her age (22), she has avoided serious trouble with the law. She was, however, cited for passing on the right when the car in front of her stopped, with the left blinker on, to make a turn into a driveway. She (my daughter) drove around using the emergency lane when the confused girl in front of her suddenly turned right and into the left front quarterpanel of my little girl’s Honda.

After pleading her case to the A-CC Police, they told her she should have been more patient and waited for the other girl to make up her mind, instead of doing what every other experienced driver in America would have done (the same thing).

I’m not accusing the local authorities of being too strict (someone has to take the blame for an accident) but my point is if that is the worst thing my daughter can do in college, then I will accept it and be happy.

It might not be a bad idea to hold a mandatory class for all incoming freshmen (not just for athletes) on the local driving laws and/or the risks of underaged drinking on (or off of) campus.

I didn’t expect Butler to come to GA.I am surprised he picked USC,my thinking was ND would be his choice.I’ve posted before that none of the remaining guys near the top of the prospect list seem to favor UGA.It’s not being negative just evaluating truthfully. This will still be a good class just more like 10th or so as opposed to the top class it looked to be earlier.

I have said it before Ranger. Give me the three star that wants to prove himself over the four or five star that thinks everyone else on the team is there just to support him. Stafford seems to be cut from different cloth and it remains to be seen about Caleb. Caleb, if it has a motor and wheels bigger than a skateboard, you need a license. Now do your best Reggie Brown imitation, buy a bike and ride it for thirty miles or more a day. Look what it did for my man Reggie.

Let me add that you can’t blame kids for playing the recruiting game for attention. The process is like timeshare sales x10 for these guys.It really has become a tawdry thing. What I would like to see is schools send out standard form letters of scholarship offers with a contact number. It would then be the student’s choice as to the schools with whom to call and setup a visit. If schools aren’t called by the kids they could not contact them further.I know this will never happen but it would be a sane and honest approach.

If you read these blogs from the last couple days, you’ll see that there were no surprises from Norcross today. The only announcement in question was Butler’s decision to go west instead of the early frontrunner and parent’s alma mater: FSU.

I was a little miffed about AJC’s headline “Bolton picks Alabama over UGA”. It’s no secret that UGA backed off from Bolton’s recruitment some time ago. And besides, Bolton’s second choice was Florida.

By funny how

the reason that any athlete does not pic uga is because uga backed off of him or her.

now that is ripe. those guys said they were interested in academics. AC A DEM ICS. get it?

many folks that read the paper have figured out (despite what rev richt and the dog faithful say) the dogs do have a discipline problem. they seem to have at least 6 players each season that have run ins with the law.

either rev richt is a poor judge of character or…. he values winning above all else. as does his daddy rev bowden.

i imagine that the percentage that actually get caught or ticketed at uga is probably 10%.

no need to look any farther than the actions of a lineman for uga over the summer. you know…. the minor misdemenor of peeing on a kid that you and your cohorts pummeled to the point of unconsciousness. now that is what i call nice character.

is it any wonder that many recruits shun uga and their image?

i think not.

Athens Clarke County Police Department = Barney Fife

It’s true, and we all know it’s true. Pulling people over for PASSING ON THE RIGHT???!!!

Chip, you can get their politician chief, or the chief of the UGA Police (trumped up security guards), to come on and try to spin it any other way, but when they have guys pulling people over for passing on the right, that’s tantamount to harrassment. It really is. It’d be like if at 2200 at night, if I’m exiting on to the 10 from 316 or something, and there’s no traffic, but there is this slow grandpa in front of me who isn’t picking up his speed to merge and I cross the gore to get away from this driving menace, and a cop pulls me over for that.

The A-CC Cops are out of control, and the geeks who run security for UGA aren’t far behind. Powertrips, the lot of them.

You know what’s funny?

Guys like funny how have absolutely no life that they troll on the blogs of a team they hate just to be a flamer.

Hey, funny how, why don’t you join jase and all of the rest of the troll flamers and just end your existance?

I mean seriously, funny how, how pathetic must your life be that you get off on coming onto a blog that has nothing to do with you, that involves a team you hate, just to flame all over it? How PATHETIC are you, funny how? I mean, seriously, can your life be any less worthless?

Obviously, you have no friends or family members who care for you. You have no loved ones to turn to in your single wide. It’s just lonely, miserable you, trolling the websites so you can flame your idiocy all over them. I mean, you totally ignored the fact that the Dawgs have almost too many commitments as it is for 2008, all of them highly rated, all of them coveted by schools such as LSU, Floridiots, Tennessee and the line. You are obviously as stupid as you are pathetic and lonely.

So please, funny how, for the sake of us all and for yourself, just end your miserable existance before you choke to death on your Hungry Man dinner because no one lives with you who can save you, and the rats whom you share your single wide with eat you after you die.

Die with some dignity, funny how. I suggest seppuku. Find a nice chef’s knife, and take the Emperor’s way. Take the way of the Samurai. Have some honor in your death, because you obviously have no honor in your pathetic life, flaming on blogs the way you do.

Please, funny how, for us and for you, just end it. Your existance is too pathetic to go on.

Once again, georgia’s program is out of control with arrests, minor suspensions and more to come. 99.9% of UGA players wouldn’t even get into tech, but they’ll be stars over at that second tier school. Tech wins with class. UGA does anything to win.

First off TechMaster…I resisted…tech doesnt win. Secondly, they have no class. Is class hitting women on the head with your gay thundersticks? Is class throwing things at the band? the band? Throw it at me next time….please. I beg you. As far as the second tier comment…give it a rest. Its old, tired, and trite. We ALL know better and it makes you look silly to say it. Then again, keep it up, it keeps us all laughing as you drive down the downtown connector in your old datsun truck with your yellow jacket in the window.

66 Mustang.

If you don’t see the difference between what Michael Vick is accused of and ANYTHING that a UGA player has done while Richt has been in Athens, I feel sorry for you.

Vick, if the charges are true, committed heinous acts of violence against innocent creatures.

Please name me ANY UGA footbal player who has hurt anyone or any thing (off the field).

Sick and Tired:

I completely agree with you. If this keeps up, there is a good possibility that things will escalate and that a UGA player will be arrested for speeding… in a CAR!

funny how? Go Gators?

Are you kidding me? Did see the NFL draft this year? After each FL player drafted was selected the announcers would say ” The Denver Broncos etc.. are taking a big chance here on Character with the (drugs, rape, guns) that so and so was suspended for (against only the weak teams)

Every FL player had been in trouble for violence or drugs.

The difference is that Richt will kick this kid off the team if he had ANYTHING to do with the assault and pee incident. That kid will have NEVER played a down for UGA.

At FL, he would be suspended for the warm up game against NE directional sisters of the poor, reinstated for the game against TN of course or anyone that FL won’t be favored by 30 point over.

If you were a Vandy fan, I can see your making fun of the # of UGA arrests, but a FL fan? Hello? Pot meet Kettle

i guess the uga player that beat a hs kid almost unconscious and then urinated on him is just another one of those minor infractions that rev richt was refering to eh.

no matter that the uga player had his band of thugs with him to help. no matter that he outweighed the kid by 50 pounds or more.

this is just another example of gawga bulldawg logic.

duhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Although I try to steer clear of blogs or (worse) comments, I was compelled to point out a couple of things:

Roswell Ed: the word you’re looking for is WITTY not ‘whitty’. And before you go trying to insult someone else, you should probably make sure your own text doesn’t make you look like a fool.

well duh: Before you comment on UGA’s student-athletes, you would do well to look to your own. I believe there is an ‘arrest-o-meter’ for student-athletes on the Internet which currently has Tennessee leading? Just, you know, FYI.

And please offer a reference for your story about the UGA player who did that, because although I scrupulously follow UGA athletics, I’ve never heard that story.

TechMaster: Not to tarnish your ‘proud institution’, but I can’t seem to recall any of the Georgia players who are or were under Federal indictment for conspiracy to distribute narcotics… but there was (is?) one at GT.

The bottom line is that before ANYONE slams on UGA for being ‘out of control’, perhaps they should review the records for the entire school population. Having spent 12 years of my life in Athens, I’m certain that you will find that a smaller percentage of student athletes get in trouble with the law than the rest of the students. Why?? OMG, they favor the Athletes in Athens?? Uh, no. I’m sure it’s that way at every University in the nation, because anyone with a brain would realize that student-athletes are under far more scrutiny, and therefore instead of ending up as small paragraph on the 40th page of the Flagpole stating “__ was pulled over for running a red light at 2:30am and failed a field sobriety test”, they get a front-page headline.

Now please: all you irrational homers get a life and stop trolling on other teams’ forums. If you don’t like the team that is being covered, what sort of twisted and demented need does it fulfill for you to make insulting comments in a forum that is not intended for you? Does it make you feel like you are a real man? Does it somehow compensate for deficiencies in your real life? Because you might as well be screaming at traffic down on Piedmont.

Please keep us updated on the day-to-day progress they are making. As for as Richt, he’s a class act. Anyone how thinks otherwise is probably a jealous fan of another team. GO DAWGS!!!

I have met mark richt. He is a religious man with good values. 18-20 year college students getting traffic tickets and underage drinking is not a major problem. Before you say that underage drinking is against the law..I’m well aware of that. I just don’t see how it is ok for people this age being able to die for our country but not ok to drink in the country they are defending. Politicians want it both ways. Either you are an adult at 18 or you are a kid.

Dear tech fans..Don’t you know that your school goes after the same players. They just don’t go to tech. Win with class. You might have class but you sure as hell aren’t winning

Techmaster,

I can’t fathom how childish some of your kind are.

You’re talking like your own football team is held to the same admissions standards as regular students. After hearing several GT players talk in interviews, we know that just isn’t the case. The larger issue here is what the hell does this have to do with college football? Getting beat the last 6 years has robbed you of what little dignity you had, and now your only bragging point is your school is smarter??? You’re an enginerd and your school has some very smart people……well woopty freakin doo! What Tech people need is better social skills and some class!!!

And your garbage about UGA doing anything to win?? CMR actually disciplines players who make mistakes and they miss key games! I think you have us confused with UF and UT. I’m proud of my team! GO DAWGs. Bring on 7 in a row.

Jim Harrick taught CMR well. You can run a prison at UGA. The most interesting bet I have made in the past week is over how many times Stafford will be forced to run out of bounds this season. I say, if he plays 11 games, it will be 45. The other folks I am betting with all predict 50 or more. How much should I bet ?

As an Athens native who spent most of my time in Athens during the summer from age 18-24, I can tell you, the ACC police and UGA police get flat out bored during the summer. Most of the students are gone, the town becomes a ghost town for the most part and EVERYONE from 17-25 is an easy target. Agree with Richt and many who have posted here, some of these things really aren’t big deals. You simply can’t compare passing on the right and not having your DL on your person or opperating a moped w/o a lic. to trying to by drugs from an undercover officer or being arrested for selling them, and anyone who would is just stupid. If the most compelling stories about UGA players getting in trouble are a couple of underage drinking offenses (how many of you had a drink underage while in college?) and traffic violations (ever got a ticket?), then I’d say we’re in better shape than most. C’mon people put in perspective! GO DAWGS!!
