UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Some good numbers for Dogs

It’s here. Football season has arrived. By this time tomorrow, I’ll be sitting in the auditorium at the Rankin Smith Center listening to Mark Richt wax eloquent about that afternoon’s first practice (don’t you know he’s tired of talking about it) at Georgia’s preseason media day. Afterward, we’ll get our shot at interviewing several of the returning players (I’ll be blogging about what is said there). Then it’s out to Woodruff Practice Fields (I’ll blog about what I see out there, too).

This time of year is always exciting. Everybody is 0-0 and everything is possible. By now, you’ve probably seen that the Bulldogs pulled a No. 13 ranking in the USA Today coaches poll. This is good news for Georgia for this reason in particular: It general takes a Top 15 preseason ranking to have any shot whatsoever of a national championship. Don’t believe me? Ask Auburn. I think they started 18 or so the season they ran the table and didn’t get a title shot.

Now I’m in no way, shape or form saying the Bulldogs are national championship contenders. I’d be inclined to say they are way too flawed this season. But, hey, at this point everybody has a shot. More importantly, the ranking shows that AFCA coaches have a pretty high opinion of where Georgia is, much higher than the SEC writers that picked it third in the East. No. 13 was the third-highest ranking among SEC teams (LSU and Florida were 2 and 3, respectively, Auburn was 14 and Tennessee 15). With three of those on the Dogs’ schedule, their destiny is clearly in their hands.

Here are some other good numbers for Georgia: 22 of 23. That’s how many of the recruits the Bulldogs’ signed on Feb. 8 were able to earn their eligibility. Sports info chief Claude Felton is helping me verify this (I’m sure one of you guys probably knows for sure) but I think that’s the best percentage under Richt). There’s an outside chance Statesboro safety John Knox could also get in but the word I’m getting is he’ll be bound for Hargrave Military.

Should Knox not make it, my calculations tell me the Dogs should have at least one scholarship left over. I would’ve said Tripp Taylor would have been the recipient of that one but his legal troubles — Taylor proclaims innocence — may interfere. If that is indeed the case, I would say Brian Mimbs is a good candidate to earn a “battlefield promotion,” certainly if he earns the starting punter’s job in addition to his holding duties.

All right, tell me what y’all think. Am I off base anywhere here?

I know this is about UGA, but at some point, it is going to go here…

No way Florida is No. 3. And 9 1st place votes?

I guess it’s a “tip of the cap” for last year, but c’mon. 2 returning defensive starters in the SEC? UF does, in my opinion, have A LOT of playmakers on offense, but will Meyer’s REAL offense work? Can Tebow be as good as advertised? I guess we’ll see.

I just wanted to beat somebody to the punch.

I just loved that Coaches poll because that put right where we should be. Flying just under the radar, is really good after listening to my Carter write-a-like- Josh Kendall last night on the Scout.com radio show. I’m counting on being wrong and hope I am but the DE and LBs lack of experience will cost us so Matthew and the Gang better score points.

To comment on the above posts about UF being #3. They may be very green on defense, but they are loaded with 4 and 5 star recruits. They may struggle early, but by the time we play them, look out! I still think “08” will be our year. I think the way our OL holds up will be the key for this year. Our defense, due to our ends and lb’s, are just not going to stop anybody unless I am really off base. Hope I am wrong….

As a huge Gator fan, I must admit that the Gators are overranked at no. 3, no doubt. Very good offensive line and plenty of high octane offensive weapons, but a very young and inexperienced (although very talented and fast) defense (it is hard to win in the SEC with a young defense). The Vols are the team to beat in the East right now, with the Gators, Dogs, and Gamecocks just behind. Kentucky has an interesting team as well. Can’t wait until “toe meets leather” once again!

no 13 sounds about right to me. i think we wll beat uf this year, yeah, you heard it from me. we will stumble a time or two early, then our defense will gel and we will finish strong. i look for 10-2 or 9-3,but bu we won’t be upset. i think we will pay attention at vandy and kentucky this year. we need to watch out for carolina and auburn! then we will beat a vary good team in our bowl game.

I’d say 13 is a bit generous and I’m mildly surprised by it. The coaches poll was very unforgiving to Georgia last year. I’ll take it though. We do have some questions but I think those questions will be answered. The biggest surprise to me was Virginia Tech in the top 10. Now I have nothing against Virginia Tech, but they get my vote for most overrated team going into ‘07. Florida is the defending champ and gets in to the top 10 automatically, but #3 is a bit high. I think LSU could be that good, but doubt they will. Being the pre-season media favorite to win the SEC is a curse.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW this is the first time in recent memory I can remember a team ( the Gators) being more overrated than the puppies. But the Puppies themselves are once again WAY overrated. I expect them to be out of the top 25 by the end of September with most likely two losses.

By 82DAWG

August 3, 2007 3:43 PM | Link to this

I think #13 is very generous as well. Two starting Freshmen Offensive Linemen? Scary. Depending on Brandon Miller to lead the linebackers? Scary. All starters (except Johnson) in the secondary Sophmores and all key backups Freshmen. Scary. Defensive Ends Freshmen and Sophmores? Scary. We appear strong everywhere else, but too many holes to be ranked in the top 15.

Cyber it is not only Coach Richt but the entire coaching staff that is biting at the bit to get going. The Dawgs are going to surprise people this year as the OL jelled in the spring and this was with a true freshman and redshirt freshman that stepped in for the starters. Next our defense will be fine as we had a few injuries/expulsions that slowed down our progress but we have a lot of talent at every position. Right now the only real question mark is with the receivers will they consistently catch the football, will they make the tough catch knowing they are going to get hammered and will they block etc.

Atl Gator , to be perfectly honest I think Tebow will struggle at times this year without Leak. Meyer’s offence will too. FLA will be missing a LOT of experience on the ‘D’ and should fall off there too. All in all though, FLA will still be a really good team as they have a LOT of talent. FLA goes to LSU which will probably be a prime-time night game in which LSU has an unbelievable record at Home at night, and then play Kentucky, then GEORGIA. GEORGIA finally gets an off week before the FLA game. My point is where UGA is usually banged up & FLA gets to heal with there usual bye-week, FLA could be the one reeling from two though games this year. I see FLA going 9-3 losing to LSU, UGA & one other loss along the way.

Chip, What about FB/RB Jason Johnson for the scholarship spot? He’s had a great spring and he’s definitely deserving of it. Also, Chris Gaunder could earn that spot. He’s been gunner for special teams and a solid backup LB. He’s also a senior walk-on. I can’t remember either name being brought up with any altercations with the law so they might be good candidates…

UF at #3 is baffling, way too high…UGA at 13 is too high…should have dropped down to around 20. AU and UT are about right. Biggest thing is with the East having no clear cut favorite, any of the 4 can win it, minus KY and Vandy of course.

Chip,

13 sounds about right to me, too. Which is amazing, because they didnt get it right last year, when they left us off their list completely (or was it the AP that didn’t have us ranked?) after beating three top-16 teams in a row. Also, Chip, explain to us how the hell the coaches can rank Florida at 3? Makes no sense, especially with what they lost. Also, Michigan, once again, is extrememly overrated. Why do these coaches and the biased northern writers keep on rating this chokaholic team in the top-10 EVERY STINKING YEAR!!! I’m sick of these Big 11 teams having to do nothing to get into the top-10, and because their conference sucks, they get to stay in the top-10 all year and play in bigger bowls than they deserve, such as Michigan getting their @$$es beat down in just about every bowl they’ve played in the last ten years. I just thank God that Notre Lame didn’t manage to crack this list, as overrated as the are.

Kind of like Michigan playing Appalacian State, right eazy pickings? Not to mention Illinois and Northwestern.

Or Ohio State playing whatever directional Michigan school they’re playing this year.

Or USC playing half of their conference schedule of heavyweights like Stanford and Wazzoo, right?

Or Louisville and West Virginia playing UConn.

I love it how idiots like this guy like to make it out that Georgia or the SEC in general are the ones playing patsies every year, when EVRERYONE in the Div-1 Football does it.

Ranked maybe just a bit high, but i’ll take it. As has been said the East is wide open. It was mentioned UT being a favorite ,but Ainge loses his top 3 WR’s and his OL is still not set with 4 positions up for grabs. This doesn’t even take into account the secondary will have 3 new starters. Its wide open folks and will certainly be an exciting ‘07 campaign.

The USAToday rankings may be a bit high but remember Richt redshirted a lot of players last year which i think hurt us: but in doing that it will help us this year. Most Nat’l Champs from the previous year are usually ranked pretty high coming into the next season so I’m not suprised there. It use to be see if we could “Shirt” as many as possible, now CMR says come in ready to play and we’ll give you the chance. With the rules changes the chances for freshmen to be used in so many spot situations we’ll see a lot more of them than we have in the past. Because, you know, I’m not a loser.

And Buck, you know, he’s got a healthy enough lead closing nearer to the “playoffs” (weird to ever think NASCAR would ever have a playoff system, but I like The Chase). I’d love to see some wins coming from the DuPont car, but I’ll take a bunch of top-5 finishes. Was it Matt Kenseth a couple of years ago who won like one or two races, but was always hanging around the top-10 and that’s how he won the points Championship? I think it was Kenseth, and thus The Chase was born. Also, I think they did better with the rules this year, but I still think wins need to count for a lot more points than they currently do. Georgia will beat OSU and USC and will proceed to 2-0. The defense will be vastly faster than they have been in the last 2 years. Our LBs who have played slow and have been awful at wrapping up tackles the past 2 seasons have been replaced with fast, promising talent. Our DBs and safeties will be fine as well b/c they all saw the field plenty last fall and Martinez always coaches em up just fine back there. On offense, our backfield will be explosive with Knowshon and Southerland. The offensive line will play well enough with the upgrade in coaching with coach Searels. He has already improved the blocking schemes and he has only been there for spring and summer. Gator fans and the like: Coach Bobo is going to throw all kinds of innovative stuff in your face that you have not ever seen before, so watch out ……remember that one game he played in 1997 when UGA killed UF the year after their national title? I think it will happen again. The wide receivers will finally have a nice year as UGA will be able to run the ball and therefore have more opportunities to get guys open. The O-line will give Matt enough time to get the ball out to our guys. Watch out for Israel Troupe, the new wide-out that has great hands and great speed. He should play often by mid year and should complete the 4 WR set. Dawgs win the east AGAIN and will win it all in 2008- mark it down!!!

T: “….shock will set in when they start out 0-2”.

You may be right about that prediction, sir. But to bring you up to speed, this is a UGA blog, not a Falcons’ blog. As far as the ‘cons go, I’d be lyin’ if I said I didn’t have a dawg in that fight. I now have five (Shock, Taylor, Milner, N. Clemons, and Mallard) which is five more than we’ve had in a while. I hope they let Vick play. But if he loses a game, they should shoot him on the spot!

13 is about right, maybe even generous, given all the unknowns. UF has always been a preseason favorite, especially after an NC it doesn’t surprise me. I have them around #17. UGA and UF should be ranked pretty close together when they hook up in Jax, with the teams headed in different directions.

According to my sources we have 2 scholarships to play with for this years club. Tripp Taylor was slotted to receive a scholarship until this situation with him being arrested for shouting at some kid came up. The other could be taken by John Knox if his SAT score is high enough for him to qualify. According to Carter Strickland they already gave the special teams long snapper a scholarship which left us with 2 still being available.

cuz, come on, #13 is lucky and it’s a big day fore me and it’s not the team so much, it’s Stafford he’s high on. You ought to be able to make a tune out of that. Jonny Cash could have. Crank it up Bro, 7 comes a 13 etc.

nascar fan you are a COMPLETE FOOL. The reason yall were not ranked at the end of the season last year is because of yalls PATHETIC LOSSES. 1. Vandy AT HOME. 2. UK 3. UT AT HOME by 3 TD’s. Besides those three loses having to have a miracle from god to beat a 2 WIN Colorado team AT HOME, and BARELY beating a HORRENDOUS Ole P** team only as a result of the worst officials in recent memory. Despite yalls late season wins that sir is why they correctly did not have yall ranked at the end of the year. And for A UGA fan to b*** and moan about other teams being overrated is one of the most comical things I have ever heard of in my entire life. UGA has been one of the most overrated teams in recent memory!!

Ron, seriously, go find the tallest building around (not the trailer you live in, it’s not high enough) and take a nice long walk and end your pathetic excuse of an existance.

Seriously Ron, how pathetic must your life be if you troll around the blogs of a team you hate just to flame your particular brand of moronitude all over it?

Seriously, Ron, your life really must not be worth much. I know we won’t miss you if you take the correct action here. Here’s guessing your family won’t, either.

Ron, UGA has the best winning percentage of SEC teams over the last 10 years. They also have had 2 SEC championships, a Sugar Bowl victory, and have been 2 wins short of the leader in the same time frame. Thats kind of overrated if you ask me.
