UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Gearing up for football season
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Howdy folks. Sorry a little late getting to you today. The goal is to blog EVERY WEEKDAY from now through football season. I’ve got to get myself conditioned to doing that and, obviously, need to make sure I have plenty of topics ready to go.
With that in mind, let’s talk about some of the things you’d like to see here. First of all, I can tell you that I will be at Georgia’s first football practice on Saturday and will blog live from the football complex twice that day. As practice continues and, certainly when the season gets started, there should be plenty to discuss.
I’ll also be keeping a close eye on Georgia basketball and all of the Dogs’ other sports so don’t feel like the subject is limited to football, though that’s all anybody wants to talk about most of the time.
But, as I’ve stressed before, this is an interactive medium and I’m here to serve. Now features and hard news will usually be posted as stories on the UGA page of the website but I will on occasion tackle a request here and, as always, alert you to upcoming or ongoing news items. I’ll also monitor the blog as much as possible during the day and answer whatever queries might arise that way.
As you all probably know, freshmen report on Friday (though most are already here), the first practice is Saturday and Picture Day is on August 18. That’s enough from me. Tell me what you want, expect, wish for. I aim to please!

Give us some feedback on the backup QB’s. I’m a big Stafford fan, but Cox and company are an injury away from being in the big game. It would be nice to know how they are looking under center.

Chip— Would like your honest assessment…… UGA players didn’t make the preseason All SEC + there are so many questions on defense and the offensive line + Stafford was kinda shaky last season YET Richt says “we’re not too far off” from a championship????? I don’t get it. Is this optimism overrated? Seems to me UGA will likely really struggle this year….. 8-4, 7-5.

Chip…your the greatest. I seem to be one of the few dawgs out there that still believes that Thomas Brown is going to do some fine things for us. Hows he look? Hows he playing? Its his senior year and I hope he can make the best of it. Heres to being undefeated, Go Dawgs!

Chip,
Good to have you back! Congrats again on the new arrival!!
Glad to hear that you’ll be blogging live from the complex. First of all, are practices open to the public? Just holding out hope that I might be able to make the drive from ATL to see a practice or two. If not, no biggie. We in blogosphere will have to rely on you to be our eyes and ears!!
Anyway, as for what I’d like to see covered, I’d really like to know what NaDerris Ward looks like in his first contact action. I’m sure most D. Coordinators had word that Chandler was the only healthy tight end we had in the spring, and if we can catch a lot of teams, esp. OK St. by surprise with Ward, I think we might catch ‘em sleeping.
I’d also like to see what the defense looks like after a couple of months to reflect on the butt-whipping they took in the G-Day game. Seems like Kelin Johnson was pretty adamant about not letting that happen again, and it looks like he devoted a lot of time in the off-season to film study. It’d be interesting to see if it pays dividends.
Also, can you let us know who officially is running with the first teams and second teams. We all got the hint that Martinez may be looking to shake things up due to the defense’s poor showing at G-Day. I’d like to know if he still does that.
Finally (actually I could go on and on forever), I’m sure most of us would like to see the progress of Sturdivant, Brandon Miller and most others who are playing key positions that are so crucial. Is Miller still looking tentative in his role at MLB, or is he finally developing fluidity and letting his instincts take over. Is he becoming a leader? And how is Sturdivant progressing? Is he following up the spring with a solid fall camp, or will he have regressed? And what about the phenom that is Reshad Jones?
Sorry if I seem a bit demanding. Can you tell I’ve been geared up for this since spring practice ended (as I’m sure most Dawgs fans on here have)?

Chip,
I know a lot of us want to know if Bobo is going to try and get Lump at least 20 carries a game. Lump, Moreno, Brown, it doesn’t matter. But a guy needs to get carries. Also, please find out if Bobo is going to do what Richt frequently did, and pulled out the hot running back, who’s running people over, and put someone in who’s going to get stoned for 2 or 3 series. I can’t remember which game it was last year, but Lump was killing the defense in the first half, and then he got like 1 or 2 touches in the second half. That kind of stuff drove me, and many in Bulldog Nation insane. We have the ability to have a great running game, but the coaches HAVE to make sure one guy is THE GUY, and the other guys are the change of pace. Please let us know if the coaches have learned from their mistakes.
Also, please let us know how the defense is looking. Specifically, the defensive coaches. I know Martinez was taking some well deserved heat last year because he outright refused to blitz Tennessee and let Ainge pick us apart. I mean, it’s like he never looked at what other teams (Florida) did to Tennessee that was effective. Why is that? It seems as this kind of thinking pervades the whole coaching staff sometimes. Why is that? I know two years ago, people beat Florida by blitzing the heck out of Leak, so what does Willie do? Play zone and let Leak pick us apart in the first half. It just seems like Willie is slow to make any changes IN the flow of the game and he waits until halftime. This was a huge problem with Coach Richt calling plays, too, but I think it’ll be taken care of now that Bobo is calling the game.
So that’s some stuff. Also, look, I know this was an issue last year, too, but honestly, Chip, if the widerecievers struggle AGAIN this year, do you think Coach Richt will ever put two and two together and see that Coach Eason is the only factor that’s never changed? Look, I want the wideouts to succeed, but if they struggle again, how can Coach Richt possibly keep Eason around any longer? It’s like Georgia has become the place where good high school wideout recruits go to die. My main beef is with Reggie Brown, who was so inconsistant here at Georgia, that when he went to Philly and was coached up, he’s become the legitimate no. 1 reciever we all knew he should have been for us. So my question is, if the wideouts struggle AGAIN, will Richt be moved to fire Eason, or is he too much like Bobby Bowden and only after dire threats would he fire a coach who is out of his league?
Thanks for the excellent blogs, Chip.

Chip, et al,
Larry Munson was interviewed by phone by Sports Animal 99 up here today in Knoxville. I’ve never heard him be so pessimistic about Georgia’s ability to win any games this year. I like “flying under the radar” but COAC he made our situation on the line on BOTH sides of the ball sound hopeless.
From what I’ve read here and everywhere it sounds like we might not be so bad off on Oline and I know Brandon Miller is key to the D but PLEASE look for some nuggets to give us some reassurance that our lines are not gonna leak like a sieve.
We appreciate the fact that you take this blog, and the interaction between us the fans, seriously and make a real effort to respond to our questions and concerns. Keep up the good work. Kiss the baby for us. GO DAWGS!

So many ?’s, but I’ll limit it to just a few.
I would like constant updates on the 0-line. I really want to know Searl’s thoughts throughout summer practices.
As B Miller apparently is going to be the man this year. Lets hear from/about him and his complement of LB’s.
I would like to regularly hear from all assistants especially Searls, Martinez, Bobo, and Eason.
Also, could we get your sense of who the on-feild leaders are going to be. Of course, tell us about Stafford’s progress and leadership style.
Finally, could we periodically get some snapshots on OSU and USC.
I’m ready for Sept.

I want to know if Brandon Miller is playing wide open or tentative. In fact, there ought to be some good Brannon Sutherland collisions with Miller. If Miller is squaring him up in the hole and pushing him back that would be a great sign.
I want to know how many reps Quentin Banks and Rashad Jones are getting.
I want to know if Ellerbe is practicing hard or doggin’ it.
I wnat to know if Mikey Henderson is really an integral part of the offense and how they are using him.
I want to know how comfortable Stafford looks. Is he making all the right decisions?
I want to know if Naderris Ward looks like he can hold up at tight end.
I want to know how well the backs are picking up blitzes. I know TB will, but Kregg and Knowshon need to as well.
I want to know how the punting comp is going?
If we get favorable answers on all of these I’m booking my room in New Orleans.
GATA!!!

1) Offensive line. 2) Defensive line. 3) Repeat
The biggest difference between the Richt era and the Goff-Donnan era has been our ability to control the line of scrimmage, especially late in games. Last year, the read hats up front were constantly getting pushed back (UT, UK, Vandy, & that other orange team) on the snap of the ball.
Outside of Stafford, the rest of the skill positions can be plug-and-play if we control the line of scrimmage.
The O-line and D-line should be topic of interest #1 every blog.

NASCAR,
Stick to racin’ ‘cause your way off base here.
First, the reason Lump didn’t get the share of the load was because he was frequently terrible at picking up blitzes.
Second, two years ago Joe Kines destroyed UF’s spread offense in T-town. Meyer ran 1, that’s right ONE, spread offense play against us in that game. UF completely went away from the spread against us, for the first tim ethat season. Remember he had two weeks to install a vanilla offense and one week knowing that Shockley wasn’t going to be playing. They knew JTII wasn’t beating them unless they gave the ball away.
Third, the reason we had so much problems with Tenn was because we had one corner that was manned by an inexperienced corner at all times. Remember Bryan Allen standing in no man’s land when Ainge threw the pass over his head. Another problem was that our safeties were not tackling well. Martinez felt he had to play consevative. You have to remember we had given up less that 30 points with 2 shutouts going into that game so I don’t think Martinez is a liability.
As far as Eason, I have to concede that. There does seem to be a problem. What that might be I don’t know. One minute Mo Mass looks great and the next he looks uncertain and tentative. I am hoping that this year will be different. It better be or we are in trouble.

Chip the question for the spring game is, was the D that bad or was the O that good. What I want to hear about pratices is can the receivers catch and can the O line protect. We did solve one problem this year by going into the season knowing who the QB is now we need the backs to step up and take control.

Larry Munson is usually quite pessimistic by nature. That why when we win the big ones or the close ones its so dramatic. “…I gave up. You did too…”

NASCAR, I totally agree with you. As a matter of fact, I can tell you exactly which game it was in which Lumpkin was absolutely murdering the defense, only to be yanked. It was the Kentucky game, which, coincidentally, we LOST!
I, too, wondered why the hell we yankeed Lump out of the game in favor of Danny Ware. Anyone who doesn’t agree can go to georgiadogs.com, look under the football team’s statistics and scroll down to the Kentucky game (Play-by Play). You will clearly see that in the first few drives of the game, Lump rushed for gains of 26, 18 and 10 yards. THAT’S IN THE FIRST FEW POSSESSIONS! Then Danny Ware came in and started gaining 3, 5 and 6 yards. It totally befuddled me…and I think that’s why we lost that game. Some people may argue that it was Stafford’s interceptions that did it, but I think if we had stayed with Lumpkin and the run, we wouldn’t have been in so many obvious passing situations to begin with.
Hopefully, this year, Bobo will learn to ride the hot hand (even if it means Moreno has to wait and play mop-up duty) and allow Lump (or whomever it is) to get in a zone when running the ball. I’m sure the Bulldog Nation will agree that we should aim to have a more balanced offense, even if Mr. Moreno doesn’t get to see the field as much as we all want him to.

Chip, I’m a huge Stafford fan and think he’s going to be great. But a recurring theme about him (rightly or wrongly) is his conditioning regime (or lack thereof). Should he have spent more time in the weight room and less on the golf links or should that issue be no concern to UGA fans at all? Thanks.

Here is my advise to Richt:
1)If a receiver does not catch, take him out…We have plenty of talent behind them. 2)If Reshad is better than C.J., then let him play. 3)If Brandon Miller (aka- I have not met any expectations at linebacker)does not work out, play someone else. 4)Please do not let a player play just because he is a SENIOR.
We will be fine if we can get these 4 things noticed

OK guys, sorry just getting back to most of you. Will try to be quicker in the future.
T’ville Dawg: Affirmative. I’ll plan on doing something on the backup QBs soon after camp starts on Saturday. As for now, I think you’ve got to believe Georgia has one of the better backup situations in the league. In this day and age, guys the caliber of Joe Cox usually transfer away when it’s apparent they won’t start. Not only is Cox hangin’, but he loves it here. He’s good buddies with Stafford, loves the school and gets along great with Bobo and Richt. Clearly Barnes is not the All-American everybody expected but, again, can’t be many better third-teamers around. Then there’s Logan Gray waiting in the wings. Georgia will always be solid at this position as long as Mark Richt is head coach.
ChampDawg: I wouldn’t worry too much about Georgia not having any preseason All-SEC choices. Not to contradict my colleagues (AJC writers do not participate in such voting) but preseason is merely an educated guess based mostly on preseason buzz and last year’s stats. And Coutu should have been first team over S.C.’s Succop. They’re even worse at picking the SEC champion, missing it each of the last five years. I bet Georgia ends up with two or three players on the postseason team, which is the only one that matters.
Rx Dawg: I, too, am a Thomas Brown believer. Nobody is stronger, faster, more hard-working or better-prepared than TB. I’ve seen this summer and his recovery from a torn ACL borders on miraculous. What happens at his position this fall is going to be very interesting to see. Which brings me to the question posed by …
NASCARfan: The jury is still out on Bobo but from what I can gather he’s going to stick with the hot guy and give them the rock. He called the Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech games LY and kept giving the ball to Lump on the Dogs winning drives versus the Jackets. In fact, though Georgia didn’t run the ball particularly well in those games, Bobo never abandoned the run. The Dogs had 37 totes versus GT and 31 versus the Hokies, 18 and 12 respectively for Lumpkin himself. That means they ran the ball almost 58 percent of the time under Bobo. That’s pretty dedicated.
Dawg4Life: Unfortunately Georgia’s practices are closed. That first one, Saturday, will be open to the media for the whole session. But usually they give us only the first 25 or 30 minutes, which means we see only positional drill work and some special teams and possibly some pass skel before we’re shooed off… . Oh, and affirmative on monitoring the progress of N. Ward, B. Miller and Sturdivant. Three critical pieces I’d say.
Ft. Worth Dawg: Georgia’s got some great options on kick returns. I’ll also make that an early storyline.
godawg: I wouldn’t put too much into Munson’s predictions or tone. He’s always pessimistic and he doesn’t feel very good these days. I remember he was particularly woeful going into that 1980 season with the Dogs having to open on the road at Tennessee and then having to play Texas A&M in the home opener.
Scott, DorseyHill, Mike: Heard ya! I’m on it.
gadog: I always catch up with Coach Van on practice days. I’ll see if he can cite how many 300-plus cleaners he’s got.
SeattleDawg: I personally sat there and watched the QBs, Stafford included, bust their butts through an intense weight-lifing and cardiovascular workout back in June. Coach Van said they did something similar every day. So I don’t think you have to worry about Stafford’s conditioning. The fact is, he’s a big boy and he’s gonna stay big. He’s going to play rough and tumble, too. I expect him to be somewhere between Jared Lorenzen and Rex Grossman his whole career.
Keep ‘em coming folks. Let’s keep those coals hot!

Speaking of the WRs, Sean Bailey’s return should light a fire beneath the young guys, and provide the leadership that was missing from last year’s group.
I would like to know who is in shape/outta shape. Also would like a report on how the JUCOs (Wynn, Irvin, Vance and Haverkamp) are adjusting to “the next level”.
Sorry, that was supposed to be Bryan Evans in my last post. Guess I’m caught between Crown and seven.

Chip, I gotta tell you the fact you answered all the regulars with specifics is extremely impressive.
I was getting pretty fed up with all the silliness and name calling, but you have truly reinvigorated this blog.
The questions I want to ask are mostly for later in the fall practice as things unfold.
I would like to know which of the new players who have never played a down yet for Georgia are going to have an impact this year. My hypothesis is at least 6 of themn will be playing on Sunday one day. What’s the word on who they are - besides Moreno and Reshad.
How are the defensive ends looking? We lost two great ones and defensive end is the key to our defense the way we play it.
Are the receivers going to start playing to their potential?
The word out of Athens is the offense line is surprisingly strong. How is that going?
Is Georgia going to emphasize the run this year? Last year we won when we ran the ball 60% of the time or more and we lost when we didn’t. What’s the plan?

Chip, thanks for the update. And Kendall, thanks for reminding which game it was. Chip, I think more than anything else since Musa has left, the running back by committee has killed our offense.
Here’s the issue: Coach always says until someone starts to shine in practice, he’ll use the committee. Well, some guys aren’t practice guys, they’re Saturday guys, you know? I think Lump might be one of those guys. Also, some guys NEED over 20 carries a game. They need the rock all the time. Coach Richt has never seemed to understand those two points. He’s waiting to be impressed during proactice with a few guys who perform on gameday. I hate to quote AI here, but it’s just practice! You think he’d see the performance on Saturday and make his decisions off of how the guys perform in the game.
Also, the John Eason issue really is a head scratcher. We get all these good recruits in here, and Eason gets a hold of them, and they never perform well. Then, Brown goes to the Eagles, has a good position coach, and becomes the second best Bulldog reciever in the NFL. That tells me a lot about how bad a job Eason has done the last six years. Something has to give, and it’s unfortunate if Coach Richt puts loyalty to one man over and above what is best for his program, like his celebrated mentor has done at FSU. I mean, it’s not like Eason is his son, right?
And dorsey, suck it my friend. Who is Brian Hill, anyway?
And Chip, I concur with reality. It really is great to have you back.

Congratulations. I drew the 11 p.m. feeding and was able to put my Little Man to bed long enough to see what’s been going on in here. I realized there was a couple of requests I forgot to fulfill.
I think it was BenS who asked about redshirts. Yes, Ben, Richt has made a sort of indirect comment about maybe redshirting a few too many last year (standby for post from friend in the Northwest). By and large, I still believe that’s good and I think it’s yet another reason Georgia may sneak up on a few folks talent-wise. In all, the Bulldogs shirted 29 players (obviously not all those were schollys), and many of them were the likes of Quintin Banks, Akeem Dent, Reshad Jones, Knowshon Moreno, Kiante Tripp, NaDerris Ward, Tony Wilson and Brandon Wood. These were some big-time prospects coming out of high school that everybody and the SEC and elsewhere wanted. You’ve got to believe there’s a gem or two in there and I know the coaches believe so. And that’s not to mention a few redshirt sophomores of which you’ve not heard a lot so far. Now a shirted sophomore that’s been stuck behind on the depth chart or injured or something can be a real wildcard because they’ve trained for three years so they’re physically and mentally ready to go. Bryan Evans, Roderick Battale, Michael Moore, Antavious Coates, Kade Weston are guys like this that could be end up being big surprises.
Somebody, NASCARfan probably, was asking about John Eason. The fact is, UGA coaches and administrators really love the guy and obviously Richt has stood by him. Of course, as always, sooner or later it comes down to production and winning in D-1 ball so the WRs, which are pretty well stocked and have been vigorously recruited, will need to step up this season. Another reality is Eason, who everybody affectionately calls “Doc,” turned 62 years old on July 30. Not sure about him but my plan is to be retiring about then.

The blitz against UT last year had some success early in ‘06. Cut, Ainge and Coach Taylor worked it out as the season progressed. Ainge wasn’t pulling turf from his facemask often. He read it better as the season progressed and UGA felt they may get burned if they employed it. This year will be different if we can’t earn respect with our WR’s. The # 1 objective will be to protect Ainge. So if you blitz, cover the drop-to guy and he’ll throw it away…He won’t and shouldn’t tuck it and run. He’s not built for that…Crompton on the other hand, is…

Some of you read too much opinion and listen to way too little post game interviews. Kentucky simply adjusted to our running game, which was catching them out of position earlier and we had to counter after they simply loaded up on us. We DID get Lumpkin the ball early in the second half, he 1,1 0 yards, and just never worked out to get him going again because of some short series. Nobody also seems to give credit for passing to him couple of time either. Ware (who incidentally had been rotation in all game) had a pretty good half, scoring the only points. BTW we only had 4 series the entire half, not counting the desperation INT. A quick Punt after the complete stuffing of Lumpking, a good drive, (ware in the game) resulting missed FG, a quick fumble, and a TD mostly with Ware and mixing in some passing, so its not really like we just didnt give Lumpkin enough time to regain some magic. NO COACH in the country would have just stubbornly stuck with something despite the other team so clearly adjusting to it. Dont make it out like Lumpkin was somehow having the game of his life and out of the blue, our coaches decided to just stop gaining yards. That’s not EVEN CLOSE to what actually happened.

It takes defense to win championships, this year we will struggle on D. Will someone please explain to me how brandon miller is all of a sudden going to be a stud? where has he been the last 3 years missed tackles, overrunning playes,no leadershiip qualities, without a middle linebacker offenses offenses will run the ball eat up clock. The offense will shine the o-line will be the biggest surprise receivers will catch the ball, our running game will be the 2nd best behind ark. Matt stafford will live up to all expections. so here it is 9 wins with a defense improving the last 6 games.

How is the O-line coming together? There are JUCO’s that ae expected to contribute early (Vance Havercamp) and shirt Fr’s. In another words, outside Big Cheese & Valasco, we are very young.. BUT the talent is there, Cannot wait to see Just Anderson pancake some folks this season. Not to mention Southerland’s lead blocking.. I think that the way the Dawgs closed the season with the second half of the UF game, @ AU, GT, & VT there is some mo-jo going into this season.. IF the OL gels the sky is the limit & maybe another trip to the ATL Dec 1!!!

I have a question? Why is Thomas Brown returning this season? I am a huge fan of Brown, but everyone knows that it takes more than 9 months to recover from and ACL injury. It just makes sense if he wants any shot at the NFL. We could use him more in 08 after Lumpkin leaves. Maybe Brown needs to ask Lumpkin and Sean Bailey about their recoverys.

Jackson, did you happen to watch the last three games of the year?
You’re an idiot flamer with obviously no idea about what you’re talking about, no clue about football, and just some troll who wants to come on the board of a team you obviously don’t like just to write something to make yourself feel good.
Dude, you lead a pathetic existance. Seriously, think about how pathetic your life must be. I mean, you don’t see me, or any other of the Dawg fans on this board over on some gay Gator board, do you? Or talking on the Bugs board, do you?
How pitiful must your life be that you gain some kind of pleasure from reading a bunch of posts from fans of a team you hate, just so you can offer your flaming, and VERY incorrect conjecture to the conversation?
Seriously, Jackson, you need to take a look at the depths to which your life is sinking and pull yourself out of the quicksand of loserdom. I pity you, son. I really do. Not only for the fact that you’re trolling on our board, but that your absolute lack of knowledge about football is so immense, that you’d actually try and throw that stat back in our face.
I mean, you don’t mention the fact that against the three toughest teams with the three toughest defenses he would play last year (minus Florida), which he would face all in a row at the end of the year, Stafford had only one interception. And that he twice led his team from behind, once in the final drive of the game, and the other when down 18 points at the half. You also forgot to mention that he picked apart and decimated the No. 5 team in the nation, at their house.
You see, you try and make yourself sound intelligent by presenting his overall numbers from last year, but you prove yourself a moron by refusing to see the big picture, so to speak.
ESPN, in a moment I can only describe as clarity because they are usually to busy hating on Georgia to see clearly, ranked Stafford, the same passer you think sucks so much, as no. 8 on their top-10 QB list for the future. Know who’s not on that list? Tim Turdblow. Know who’s not on that list? Bennett the Bug.
Yeah, I’m assuming you’re a Bug or a Gaytor by the fact that you’d come on the board of a team you hate to troll and flame your worthless opinions.
Dude, your life is completely devoid of meaning, Jackson. This is our board. This is my board. Yeah, we’re geeks or hardcore fans for posting here, but what’s your excuse, Jackson?
Jackson, your life is so terrible (because you obviously need to “prove” yourself by flaming on a Bulldog board) that you should just climb the highest building you can find and jump off it. Why don’t you go jump in the Shark tank at Sea World or at the Aquarium during feeding time? I mean, if your life is this meaningless, I would just end it if I were you. You obviously have no friends or family members who care about you, so no one will miss you.
I won’t miss you, Jackson. So please, just end your miserable existance so we don’t have to put up with your particular brand if idiocy anymore.
Please!

I-Dog, it is my understanding just from the news article, and past issues, that traffic voilation DO NOT carry the automatic 1.2 game suspensions. In both cases the story reads “usually handled internally”. As you point out scooter arent dope or booze or fists and dont break any university policies for bad behavior. And the term “arrest” doesnt key any action. I think it was beat to death that technically your grandmother could be “arrested” because of an insurance snafoo. The automatic suspension that we saw before are university mandated as a code of conduct issue.

Chip:
I remember the late night feedings. It is a special but difficult time.
I would still like to have the stats for weight room improvement for each player. The guy who used to run the grapevine posted these each year when that was running and it was great.
I would also like to know IF and WHEN, the last arrest of a citizen riding a moped in Clarke County happened? I mean a non-UGA-player moped rider? Has it EVER happened? Has it been 10 years? Doesn’t it seem just a little strange that TWO uga football players were arrested on mopeds in the same month, one month before the season?
I’m not a conspiracy theorist, though I know it probably sounds like I am. I’m not suggesting that the world is out to get us. I’ve just never heard of ANYONE being arrested while riding a moped in my entire life.
I’m willing to bet that either 1 or 0 private citizens or non-football-player students were arrested in Athens while on a moped in the last 10 years. Then, suddenly one month before the season, two VERY highly recruited players are? It seems fishy.
If you were to report that this kind of thing happens all the time in Athens..that 20 people are arrested on mopeds each year that aren’t football players, in Clark County, then I would have to agree that I am wrong.

Sorry Jackasses. It was Bryan EVANS. Whether you want to believe it or not, I was thinking Bryan EVANS the whole time. Who knows how that happens.
As far as critcizing people by questioning their football knowledge, I do have a problem with people who seriously question this coaching staff. Since Richt took over he has coached, I believe, 78 games. There are only 3 games in which we really didn’t have a chance to win in the 4th Quarter:
the Fla game his first year
the SEC Champ game against LSU
the Auburn game the year they went undefeated
Those teams were a combined, right off the top of my head, 35-5.
Now anybody, including me, who can seriously sit here and think “I know more about football than these guys” is an idiot.
Last year during the TN game a guy next to me started raising hell with Richt right after Lump gave up the blocked punt. I looked at him like he was crazy. The coaches had done a hell of job going into that game. We had a 24-7 lead with a QB that couldn’t throw it ten yards. Then we start missing blocks, missing tackles, giving the ball away etc… And this guy wants to blame Coach.
As you will remember TB took it all the way on the kick off and the whole time he was running I was screaming at this guy “look at Coach Richt run the ball! look at Coach Richt run the ball!!!”
The point was, of course, that coaches coach and players make plays. Our staff gives these guys every chance in the world to be successful but at some point, the guys on the field has to make the plays.
Anybody who suffered through Goff knows bad coaching and should be real glad we’ve won our first 3 East titles and 2 SEC titles as well under these guys. I’ll complain when there is something to complain about. Until then I’ll ridicule anybody who thinks they know better than this staff. Why? Because they don’t.

Thomas Brown:
Chip, thanks for the comments on Thomas Brown. I admire his work ethic and your exactly right that nobody is in better shape or stronger than he is.
Maybe this injury will liberate him! Here is what I mean:
He was probably expecting to play in the NFL someday, when he came to UGA and had a lot of pressure on him.
He has done OK, but not great. As it stands now… he doesn’t have an NFL career to protect and so he doesn’t have to “worry” about injury. He is 3rd on the depth chart so he doesn’t have heavy expecations.
He can just let it rip, this is his last year/last chance. Dare to be great, he has nothing to lose, leave it all on the field as if every play were going to be his last.
That attitude just might make him extraordinary. As you pointed out so well in the body of these responses, he has all the physical tools to be great.

Good points about Richt and how far we have come from Goff and Donnan.
Fans can be critical of highly paid adults like the UGA coaches if they want. Fans are allowed to be wrong. I don’t condone throwing things at coaches you don’t like, but I think it is OK for a blogger to say that they wished that Richt would pick one RB to get the majority of the runs.
They don’t know as much as Richt. I don’t know anywhere near as much about football as Coach Goff! That doesn’t mean Goff was a great head coach and beyond critisism though some of it was mean spirited and uncalled for).
I agree with you about Richt. He will go down as the greatest coach in UGA history.

My point is that idiotic UGA fans just like yourself act like Stafford is going to be the next Joe Montana. I actually heard that at a bar the other night. He is an AVERAGE at best QB and his results this year will be very similar and so will the results of the team. Dorsey,
Let me guess, you also think the Bobby Cox is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and bears no responsibility whatsoever for his headscratching managerial decisions in October which have directly led to his superior team only winning ONE World Series when they should have won at least THREE?
You’r POV is entirely unvalid from a logical standpoint. In your world, because Coach Rocht and his staff are superior to what came before, that they shouldn’t every be questioned?
That’s ridiculous. I’m as big a Mark Richt fan as there is. But his refusal to give Lump the rock for 20 to 25 carries a year directly contributed to at least one loss last year (Kentucky). And his continued loyalty to one coach who really isn’t cutting it with some top flight talent (the evolution of Reggie Brown from inconsistant college player to outstanding NFL player) is hurting the team as well.
And yes, these are VALID concerns and VALID reasons to criticize Coach Richt. His greatness as a coach does not make him immune to criticism. We’ve seen what happens as schools where coaches are immune from criticism (FSU).
So Dorsey, if you want to worship Coach, and refuse to criticize any mistake worthy of criticism, then be my guest. But don’t expect to be taken seriously. You’re just blinding yourself to a little thing I like to call reality.
Oh, and P.S.: I think Coach Richt might have heard a little of the VALID criticism when it came to his playcalling and his failing as a HEAD COACH because he also wanted to be an offensive coordinator, and the fact that it was pulling him in too many directions and impacting both his ability to be a good head coach and a good playcaller. Hmmm… Dorsey, if it were up to people like YOU, Coach Richt would STILL be calling the plays instead of taking his place as the head coach.

NASCARfan, while you are right Richt shouldn’t be immune to criticism, I seriously doubt that is the reason Coach Richt handed play calling duties to Bobo. I think it had more to do with him being pulled in too many different directions than anything else. Now he can spend more time recruiting, which has already shown to be working. I disagree with you on his play calling duties. Yes, I think he got too conservative at times, but to really question him on his play calling is absurd. As he said on a call-in show once ‘I understand that everyone has an opinion what play should be called, but when I call a play it’s for a reason. I also understand that most people who criticize my play-calling have probably never coached a Football game’. I think it’s great to ‘discuss’ games an ‘what-if’s’, but for someone to think they know better than a head coach is hilarious. There’s a reason he’s coaching and most who criticize aren’t.

2N4, you don’t have to be a coach to have knowledge about football. And I’m sorry, but Coach being a playcaller as well as trying to be a head coach was never the best solution, and invited plenty of VALID criticisms, especially in the area of playcalling and his misuse of personel during the game (as Kendall pointed out, remember the Kentucky game from last year when Lump saw only 2 touches in the entire second half after running over the KY defense). I’m sorry, but that argument that, “You’re not a coach, so you can’t criticize,” holds absolutely no water.
Let me put it another way, as long as Coach is being paid by Georgia, he’s as open to criticism from every Tom, Dick, and Harry as let’s see, the President, members of Congress, and all politicians are, as Michael Adams is, as Carter Strickland is, as the Supreme Court is, as Bill O’Reilly is, as Keith Olbermann is, as Nancy Grace is, as David Chase is (come on… a cut to black, I was robbed!!!), as J.K. Rowling is, as Bobby Cox is, as Arthur Blank is, as Gary Bettman, Bud Selig, Roger Goodell, and David Stern are, as ANYONE in the public eye is.
I’m sorry, but that’s the way it is, 2N4, and to argue that Coach Richt is or should be safe from my criticism because I don’t happen to coach is absolutely ridiculous. I know football as much as I know that Jimmy Johnson is an immature punk (No. 48, not the former coach of the Cowboys and Dolphins). I have every right to criticize, and what’s more, I’m not going to make a criticism that isn’t warranted.
Thanks.

NASCARfan , I never said “that Coach Richt is or should be safe from my criticism “. In fact, what I did say is “NASCARfan, while you are right Richt shouldn’t be immune to criticism,”. Then I went on the say “I seriously doubt that is the reason Coach Richt handed play calling duties to Bobo.”. I think everyone is open to criticism, including you. My point is Richt gave up play calling duties because he thought it was best, NOT because he was being criticized. And I also know a lot about Football, but I’m not going to claim I should be calling plays for GEORGIA. Look at it this way: It’s easy to look back and criticize why a Coach such as Richt may have called a certain play, or as you mentioned take Lumpkin out of a game. All I’m saying is if you were in the practices with Richt, in the locker room with Richt, and on the sidelines with Richt, you may have a different opinion of how plays are called. Ps -And I don’t like Jimmie Johnson either.
By AltamahaDawg

Also might be more valid IF he actually did take Lumpkin out of the Kentucky Game. Critisism is one thing, not getting the stories straight is another. One of the things I have always noticed in here is that its seems some god given right to have an opinion if its critical of coaches, But on the occations that folks try to simply say, “hey he prabably did or called something, for reasons that you cannot understand” all of a sudden that opinion is not allowed and condemed as simply a “homer”. I dont think I have ever heard somebody say, “can’t critisize” the coach in here. I have however and beleive true, heard that to assume a fan might know how better to do things than him is a bit absurd.
I look at it like….do I really know what I would have done? or just thinking since that didnt work, I would have done it differently? The test there is if I could give specific detailed, educated, on the spot, real time facts of why My way is better, not just, we shoulda coulda woulda. I am guessing in a debate with Coach Richt about what Kentucky did in the second half of that game, (or any other game) and what we did to react, he would make us all look pretty uneducated. So critisizing Lumpkin not getting more carries and actually knowing why or why not the same thing. Secondly, and a point that seems obvious, but missed I think. It’s his call. He calles for what is best for him in that situation. What one of us MIGHT have done is totally irrelavant. And MY way might have been right if WE were running the show, but he has to do things that suits him, and his plan.
on the other, Coach Richt HAD to be OC for a few years. Thats what HE knew. Thats not what TT or Fulmer or anyone else knew. He was in his first year of head coaching and had to have some sort of control. Heck, he hired his replacement in his second year, what more could he do? Turn it over before somebody was ready? So for all the folks screaming a few years back to go out and hire somebody, I guess you simply are not a big fan of Coach Bobo now. Its one or the other. Should he have put Bobo in before ready or was Bobo never the right man????OR, OR was it Richt trying to make the transition the whole time and all the yamering was just worthless noise.

Next there was no reason for him to be arrested as normally a person would have been given a verbal or even written warning ticket but not taken to the station figerprinted, booked and released on bond.

NASCARfan , Jimmie Johnson lost any respect I might had had for him when he slapped that Coke bottle off the top of his car when he won that race a couple of years ago. COKE was the major sponsor of that particular race he won (Coca-Cola 400,500 or something) and because Pepsi is a sponsor of his car he slaps the Coke of the top of his car. Truly classless.

NASCARfan,
I think the point of my earlier post is that people who criticize the coaches are arrogant, pompous, idiots who think their point of view has some value.
You prove how right I am by saying that people like you led to Richt giving up play calling. I really don’t believe that “people like you” or your opinions, much matter to people like Coach Richt.
Listen, I think its great that fans can sit around and talk about “why is he doing this?” or “why isn’t he doing it this other way?” I think its fine until you get to the point that you are placing yourself ABOVE the coaches in football knowledge. That is when you lose credibility with me. That is why you have none with me.
Have you thought about your critcisms and why things maybe happening?
Maybe Lump missed some blocking assignments. Maybe he had a bad attitude at half. Maybe he got a minor injury. Who the hell knows? But your willing to tell the world that YOU KNOW Lump could and should play and that Richt decided against it. That is just arrogant and stupid.
Sure we all have concerns and opinions, but the coaches are doing things for a reason. They have thought about all of this much more than any of us combined. No they are not perfect. No one is quicker to say “I blew it” than coach. He has done it several times.
Get over yourself. Enjoy all of the wins and go into coaching so I can tell you how much you suck.

Altamaha, I’m not calling people a homer, notice that word never escaped my, ummm, keyboard. I’m just saying, and you have to agree, that there have been times when one running back is killing the other team and then he’s forgotten for the rest of the game. Now, I don’t care if there is a “reason” or not. I don’t care what happened in practice or not. Once again, we’re talking about practice? Practice? Really? What I care about is why in games last year and the year before, when one running back was killing the opposing defense, why didn’t that running back get 20 or more carries? Why did he get taken out of the game for a quarter or more before he got to touch the ball? Why did Lump not play much, if any, in the second half of the Kentucky game? Also, why did Coach Richt the playcaller have the tendency to go to the well far too often with certain plays? You all know the play I’m talking about.
These are the criticisms which are valid. I think Bobo, as an OC, without having to worry about defense and the rest of the team, will be a far more imaginative, inventive, and consistant playcaller than Coach Richt. Kind of like how Coach Richt was at FSU. Y’all remember that guy, right? Coached two Heisman winners and had some of the most prolific and balanced offenses in NCAA history, not to mention won 2 Championships? That’s what was missing with Coach Richt the HEAD COACH calling plays.
Anyway, people should be able to voice their criticism as well as their loyalty. And to voice criticism does not make one disloyal. It’s just part of being a fan. Some fans don’t like to voice their criticism and go about thinking everything’s hunky-dory all the time. That’s fine. I have NO problem with that. I love the kind of fans who have the sunshine dispositions. I wish I was more like that sometimes. You’ll never see me belittle someone who is like that. But I do not appreciate people telling me I can’t criticize, or that I’m less of a fan because I do so.
So, we can all get along. It’s really NBFG, ya know, Altamaha?
So let’s get back to what we’re here for, and make guys Jackson hate their miserable lives so much that they never come and flame on our board ever again!

Lumpkin did play in the second half, was shut down, Kentucky reacted. Without Ware, actually had nothing to do with Ware, just changin it up, we would not have scored a single point in that half. let me just pint blank ask, exactly what woudl you as head coach done, when kentucky pulled everyone in and loaded the box, in affect shut down everything that was working in the fiorst half for Lumpkin? Just keep trying the same thing, even when it failed? I’ll make the exact challange I did repeatedly last year. go to georgiadogs.com . look at eh play by play for that game, tell me exactly what series that Lumpkin shouod have been given the ball more, and how that woudl have affected the outcome. Carrying the ball 20 times is not some magic formula. Auburn has had great success at times rotating. Uf won a NC last year with a converted QB as their second leading rusher. Its not about hunky dory, its about getting the facts right, and not just saying, ah man, why cant we……..thats not critisism, thats just bitcching. And you are right it aint no biggie, it never is, I still dont understand why folks get SO bent out of shape when somebody suggest they are not a very informed playcaller from the couch.
I agree with everything you are saying about Bobo, and Coach Richt. You are however dodging the question. Should he have promoted him before he was ready, or was Bobo never a good choice? If neither is true, then was are you critical of, that coach had a plan for a great OC to take over when he was ready?

As far as the sprint draw…….we ran it too many time because we were protecting a freshman QB. Yuo do realize that is NOT a called play by the coach, its a check off at the line. It’s a base set that several option are derived from. Did you noticed it started to be used a lot less as the season wore on? Maybe the QB stopped using it as a safety net as he got more comfortable? Incidentally we scored 4 TD out of the sprint draw, and the threat of that play opened up quite a few QB keepers. its also seen in practically every SEC game I ever watch a few times at least.

Dawg4life, I appreciate the response. Me and a buddy of mine are studying journalism right now and we were just wondering how easy/hard it would be to catch a couple of practices before the OK State game. Looking foreward to Sept. 1st. GO DAWGS!!!

Dorsey, all good questions, none of that was true as I understand, Lumpkin didnt do anything to deserve being “taken out” other than getting 2 yards his first 3 carries of the 3rd quarter. In the after game press conference, the coach detailed exactly what position and what players Kentucky adjusted to stop those break away runs from the first half. There were a few Lumpkin 1 yr gainers in he first half too, so its not like he was really “on fire”, we just had a really good scheme exposing them for a while. Im not making this up, just telling you the explainations I heard. Watching the game, that sounds a lot more reasonable than, coach just bet somebody that we could win without our best weapon in the second half.

Really eyewitness, “normally a verbal warning” is the consequences for driving on a suspended licence? Really? Are you absolutely positive there? hmmm. I suggest you dont try to put that theory to the test. As far as playing the race card (collect your prize at the door), I have no idea, maybe the policeman is just the biggest jackass bigot in the world. Not the issue. Didnt arrest others doing the same offense is not a defence. You reprinted my post but appearantly didnt read it. Produce a valid legal permit to operate a motor vehicle, and you do not get arrested in that situation. Same for King. Stop twisting the issue. 3 days after the facts are out, its just senseless to misrepresent what happened.

Has anyone heard how Kris Duram is progressing? At 6’5” I assume he could make a great possession receiver especially after I saw him make a couple of nice grabs at the G-Day game. Does anyone else think that Knowshon could take the #1 spot by the Alabama or even the South Carolina game? I know he’s a Rd.Sh. Freshman but from i’ve seen he has all the intangibles to be THAT back everyone’s been waiting for at GA. Plus the kid’s got heart, i’m not sure that anyone else on the team plays with as much emotion as this guy. Watch for Knowshon’s work ethic to keep us in those close games and out of those bitter loses.

Altamaha,
First, if he had been white they never would have even stopped him as they didn’t stop the three other cars driven by white people, second even if they had they probably would’nt have asked for his license, insurance and registration but went straight to the lecture about the dangers of passing on the right or would have taken the license, registration and insurance but would not have run them through the system. You can say what you want but I was there and I know what I saw and BTW I’m white.

It cracks me up when people think they have more knowledge than the coaches. Or even criticize them for game decisions. This is the key point here—we, as fans, see the game from a different perspective than the coaches do. I don’t mean our backgrounds either. I mean HOW we actually watch the games. We either watch the games live at the stadium, or on TV. The coaches however, spend HOURS upon HOURS watching this thing called VIDEO(film went out 20 years ago). The coaches watch each and every play of every game from two different angles. The sideline wide shot and the tight endzone shot.
The side wide shot keeps all 22 players in the shot the entire play, basically showing how WR’s run their routes and how the DB’s play them, and give the best shot at why a QB made a particular decision.
The EZ tight shot is focused on tackle to tackle-showing which RB and OL missed an assignment. The same goes for the DLine.
Basically, the coaches see both of these shots for the same play for the entire game. Then they catalogue each play w/ down and distance.
My point is how can anyone in their right mind think they have more knowledge than the coaches having NOT watched all the video that they have??

Jimmy, I dont think anyone really argues that they DO know more. Just that its thier right to complain if things dont go the way they like. True enough. I know I do sometimes. But for me its “I wish” or “I just dont understand why this or that”. I never mistake my lack of understanding for something other than that.
But some folks confuse complaining with well grounded critisism. IMO, true critisism would contain some alternative suggestions as to what should have been done and why that would have been better. To be truly worth anything some explaination as to why they would know something seemingly not obvious to the staff. But that goes back to your point as to why thats practically impossible.
