UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Depth on the defense

Georgia didn’t have any guys on the first team preseason SEC defense, but I think there is a chance the Bulldogs could have some of the best overall depth in the conference at two spots - safeties and defensive tackles - by midseason.

First off at the safety position, Reshad Jones is going to be a player who would start for a lot of teams out there. And Quintin Banks hits like Thomas Davis and Greg Blue. And those two are backups. Yeah, both are young but I would expect them to be major contributors. Couple those two with Kelin Johnson and C.J. Byrd and it is a solid group that probably can match any team in the conference

On top of that if he can remain healthy and if his lateral movement is good - and everybody says it is - Antavious Coates can provide some stability back there.

At the other spot, I know Georgia may have lost some leadership at the defensive tackle spot, but there are six or seven players there who, by the end of the year, should really be contributing. First off Jeff Owens probably should have been second team all-SEC at the very least on the ballots. Geno Atkins and Kade Weston are the next best two players at D-tackle. Atkins is strong and agile. Weston is huge and can plug up the middle. Then there is Tripp Taylor. Taylor, off-field distractions aside, is a hard working player who is not afraid to match up with anyone. Throw in Corvey Irvin and Brandon Wood and there is some serious depth. Ricardo Crawford may also be able to provide some punch at that position.

Carter, I just got back from vacation with 3 FREAKIN TEENAGE BOYS. Now, I’m not going to dog you like some of the guys on here because I’m tired and pi$$ed off. But I digress. A lot of Bulldawg fans on here are also Falcons fans, so, I ask you, could you have given us just………….a………….little bit more info on how these players are doing? We all know that Reshad Jones and Quintan Banks can hit like Davis and Blue………but how are the coaches lookin at them? Is someone losing their starting job come fall practice?

Carter, you’ve gotten some pretty bad press on these boards. But if you’re going to follow Georgia football, we, on here, need as much in depth reporting as you can give us. And yeah it’s pretty bad when a bunch of overweight, overpaid, lookin forward to fall guys, starts doggin you about sh!t, then dam, all we want is to talk FREAKIN FOOTBALL!!!! That’s all we want Carter. You can get some of these guys back with some posts like this. Give them something from the practice field, from the weight room, from the Coaches office. We don’t need speculation about who you think is going to do what. Most of us are not in Athens. We are as far south as Valdosta or far north as Ringgold. That doesn’t include our supporters in the surrounding states. In support of this great University….You did not have to attend these great College’s to support a team that you are adamant about. I AM GEORGIA!!!……If you are anything SEC….then I applaud you. If you are between the ages of 17-27 I don’t expect you to understand just how you need to support your team. I love the DAWGS and always will. Support your own SEC team as much as we do………GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!

Give Carter a break. He does a great job. The story he did on Richt going to Honduras made my wife cry. I read his stuff every day. It’s fair. You guys who bring up the Clifton Geathers stuff are 1) wrong and 2) morons. Tom, Hunker Down never said Carter plagiarized the Geathers story. We just remember it as unprofessional, unethical, mean-spirited and unwarranted. It was a hit job on an athlete who didn’t deserve it. It was off base and irresponsible.

And Carter sucks. He’s burned his bridges. I’m tired of people giving him a break when he writes a straight-forward article or blog only the next day to have to read something he’s written with his trademark snide remarks and apathy for his job. So what if every once in awhile he writes something well? It’s the ones the backhandedness that I remember. I’m happy for Chip, that he’s a daddy. But the AJC needs to find someone else to fill in when Chip can’t make it.

I made comments about Carter Strickland concerning an article he wrote that was beyond being similar to something another sportswriter had written a few days before. I wrote that Carter had written in parts of the article almost word for word what the previous article had said. While I think anyone from an outsider’s view would understand why it looked like a case of one person “borrowing” from another, I have found out that there is much more to the story and I was wrong for the insuations that have now led to people outright accusing Carter of Plagiarism. I never used that term but admit that what I wrote may have fanned flames that have become out of control. I would like to publicly apologize to Carter Strickland and ask that he forgive me for the trouble that this may have caused him.

I have differences in opinion with Carter on many issues that he reports and that’s okay, but I should have been much more careful in saying something that is so serious in another human being’s personal and working life without knowing ALL of the facts. I hope Carter will understand that from what I saw and read it was a conclusion that a lot of people could have also mistakenly jumped to, and forgive me for it.

If any of you have problems with Carter Strickland handle it as you may desire but please do not quote me and what I said about him… I was wrong.

Stand-up post Hunk Erdown. I will be glad when editors, bloggers, and writers will be able to talk about football and not how some kid should loss his education for drinking a beer, or the writers can insult our Dawg sensitivities to the point of total mutiny.

I have a suggestion for AJC. Keep the misdemeanor stuff as articles not blogs. Keep the misdemeanors in perspective not sensationalized. As for the UGA page, be honest but don’t jab at us. The bloggers beat the heck out of each other without your help. I like to know what is going on without a misleading headline or factually skewd story. I do enjoy the AJC overall, but these are my criticisms.

Nascar, I also questioned the cutsie way the Taylor story worded in the blog, as I just dont understand why then need for that lil thorn, but that story was reported in dozens of papers and sites. Carter didnt ruin the boy’s reputation.

Not sure what the fuss is about the Geathers story. It was an obvious attempt to insinuate that UGA was a bottom feeding money hungry institution,(I mean who could possibly argue with the Drake foundation) but really wasn’t insulting the kid particularly. Those facts were widely know about his academic issues.

Have at it with Carter, as he obviously invites it, but you need to be fair. There are plenty of ways to blast somebody for journalistic style without accusations of wrongdoing. To be fair to Hunk Erdown, he really wasnt pushing that whole plagerism issue that strong, but a few people took it too far. I joked about it myself, but that’s a lot different than trying to get somebody fired.

Save the fighting spirit, young man. You are going to need it in about 2 months. Trust me as soon as thing don’t go well one game, you are going to see a guy in here demanding somebody some assistant’s job midseason or how Richt isnt doing a damn thing if we dont go undefeated, and you are going to want to reach the screen and choke them.

CFN Web site (Fox Sports) [under] Bold Predictions 2. Oklahoma State will win at Georgia, but the league will take a hit after Kansas State loses at Auburn, Florida State beats Colorado, USC beats Nebraska, and Texas A&M loses at Miami.

Altamaha, I’d like to bow to your wisdom, but it’s Strickland. He needs to be gone yesterday. And how can we be sure that was Hunk doing the apologizing. Yeah, it sounds like him, but many others have posted under other people’s name. I’m just saying… But I will never give Strickland an inch. Hey, I’m actually trying to help him out. With how much he obviously hates his job, I’m just trying to help send him on his way to a job he may like better.

He started it, remember? And the Geathers story was heinous. The worst kind of lazy, unprofessional, and unethical journalism. I’d say about 80% of all of these negative Georgia stories and the stories in which he makes a mountain out of a molehill (Taylor, King, Chandler, etc.) begin and end with Strickland. He’s the bane of our existance, and not half the journalist Chip is.

Hey Chip, in 2003, EVERY single “outlet” picked Clemson to beat Georgia in Death Valley. They said Georgia had lost too many important players, especially on the offensive line. Georgia destroyed Clemson 30 - 0.

Then, in 2005, EVERY single “outlet” picked Boise State to be Georgia at SANFORD STADIUM. They said Georgia lost too many important layers, especially on defense and not to mention the NCAA’s most winningest QB ever. Georgia demolished Boise State 43 - 13.

Now, in 2007, EVERY single “outlet” is picking Okie State to beat Georgia at SANFORD STADIUM. They say that Georgia has lost too many players on the defensive and the offensive line is a question mark. Well, if history is too be believed, when the idiots over at ESPN, SI, The Sporting News, and whatever other idiot “experts” you want to offer as proof that Georgia is going to lose, that means that the Dawgs are about to lay a 30-point @$$WHUPPIN on some team that thinks they are about to “prove” themselves by beating Georgia in the first game of the seaon.

Georgia is going to kill the no defense Okies State Pokies. But, to stay with tradition, I’m calling the game 48 - 18.

The University of Georgia has the 2nd most All-SEC Academic Honor Roll students announced by The SEC Friday 7/20/2007, and among the football players are our 2nd-year Starting Quarterback Matthew Stafford and star wide receiver Kris Durham.

Ashley Houts, our star women’s basketball player who just won a gold medal for us this month too on the USA U21 World Championship as 1 of only 2 SEC basketball players named to the team, also was named today All-SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll.

These 56 UGA Freshmen have done well, and should get at least as much press for this as football players do for killing 17 dogs and taking the year off to say that they know nothing about it.

http://www.georgiadogs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DBOEMID=8800&ATCLID=1134787

South Carolina led with 64 All-SEC Academic Freshmen Honor Roll students with UGA next with these 56.

http://www.secsports.com/index.php?s=&urlchannelid=2&urlarticleid=9215&urlsubchannelid=&changewellid=2

It is NOT insignificant that now four (4) UGA Starting Quarterbacks in a Row under Coach Richt have all 4 been named to the All-SEC Academic Honor Roll.

I can put up with some fumbles and interceptions and few touchdowns with these kinds of results in the classroom.

Congratulations UGA student-athletes for having only South Carolina do better than you on the All-SEC Academic Freshman Honor Roll.

Tennessee, LSU and Auburn could improve in this area - couldn’t they ?

Where in the hell are the Academic All-ACC Freshmen Varsity Football Players at the Georgia Institute of Technology ?

There ain’t any, but I forget how smart Tech football players, like Calvin Johnson (college drop-out who cannot even talk) are.

The Average SEC Institution placed 42 All-SEC Academic Freshmen Honor Roll student-athletes who had to play on their Varsity Team and had to have at least a B Average. Making the Dean’s List is even more prestigious and requires more than this 3.0 B Average required to make All-SEC Academic Freshmen Honor Roll.

After that, doing it consistently for their academic career, will graduate them with Honors, and better than that is to be Honored in the Top 5 Percent of Their Graduating Class.

Then, there is Valedictorian.

This is big news that Matthew Stafford, Ashley Houts and Kris Durham made the top of the list academically and are recognized by The SEC on this day for their dedication their entire freshman year to their primary task for which I paid for their Scholarship.

Congratulations to these 3 stars of The University of Georgia, including Matthew Stafford for being stars on the field and in the classroom, as were David Greene, Joe Peter Tereshinski III, and DJ Shockley in the previous years for Coach Richt. In a sports world starved for good news, this is the pinnacle.

And NAS, I wasn’t exactly cutting Carter any slack, I just said that “I” wasn’t gonna dog him. I knew everyone else would do it for me. And BuLL, why so negative? Do u want the Dawgs to fail? Hey man, positive energy does wonders, ever hear of Chopra? But I digress. The dawgs defense usually flourishes under a good offensive leader. We faltered last year due to confusion on offense. There’s no confusion this year. Don’t worry about the defense. It will come together under a high scoring offense. With the combination of a now more learned and mature Stafford(forget the keg) and a new addition to a stable of running backs, IMHO, you’re gonna see some high scoring games. I feel better about this team than I’ve felt about past teams going into the season. Can’t wait til Sept to let the first snap set the tone. GO DAWGS!!!

By Kendall - Secondly, you people all clamour for more info, go where Carter goes. His stories follow the Rivals story almost daily. Its simple and cheap and you get an overload of info.

Are you joking me? Rivals provides a sheep like following where journalism is defined through red and black colored sun glasses. At least AJC writers have the nads to come out with a little bit of criticsm from time to time.

And reading these AJC blogs is far more entertaining than the rivals message board that is typically stale, humorless, and moderated to the point that a simple 4 letter word is deleted. They do have great info on recruiting, but that’s about it.

Even the face time they get with a lot of coaches and players is wasted with cookie cutter, by the book questions. There is almost never any opposition offered to the straight and arrow of the program. Independent sources that aren’t so hitched to the universities can offer a far more objective view that quite frankly is more enjoyable and entertaining to read and interact with.

I honestly get more substance from Google Alerts and key word searches than anything on Rivals or Scout, and I don’t have to spend $100 a year to get it.

By boots

July 21, 2007 9:44 PM | Link to this

Carter, you have been accused of plagiarism and borrowing ideas from Rivals. At the least, you are uncreative and spend more time smearing young men than any other writer in this paper’s history. At the worst, you should be suspended until the paper finishes its investigation.

On an actual football note, what ever happened with the Auburn investigation over players taking / not taking classes that broke at the end of last year? It was said they were taking classes without being required to go to class, and it was the department head who gave them all the grades. Just wondering what became of it…

If there is info on the charges, then speak up. If you aired them for everyone to read, then explain yourself more, and shame on you. However, if they are serious accusations, then the AJC really should suspend Carter until he is cleared or resigns.

I have to agree with everyone else on this. If Carter is stealing someone else’s work, then prove it and let the chips fall. Let his bosses decide. If he isn’t then let’s talk football. But it’s a pretty serious thing in the paper biz.

By Hunk Erdown

July 22, 2007 12:36 AM | Link to this

I am the real Hunk Erdown. I made an open apology on here earlier. Let me show you how easy it is to make a similar mistake as I did.

Go to Scout.com and pull up latest stories. Choose the one about the SEC Coaches Pre-Season All-SEC Team. The story will pop up. Read it closely and you will see that there are very serious similarities to the same story Carter wrote for the AJC just two days ago. Print it and then print the one Carter wrote. Compare them closely. A few of the paragraphs are identical except for one word or two. You’ve now got Carter dead-to-rights… right? Clear case of him stealing from Scout.com, right?

Wrong, because if you look closer you will see that when you chose the story from the menu and it “Popped up”, what it actually did is link you to secsports.com and the story from that site. Guess what? That is the official site of the SEC and the story was actually the announcement of the teams and likely where the reporters legally got their information for their stories.

As I said, I messed up. If you follow the example I just laid out, you will see how easy it is to mess up. I never intended to go to the sec website, but that is where scout linked me to. That is an example. I cannot tell you the actual story that I was talking about when I made the original comment because I will need that in case I have to defend myself in a slander lawsuit, should Carter choose to go that route, but the example I just gave you is so that you will see how easy it is to screw up and potentially make accusations that will make you look stupid. My advice to you is that if you want Carter gone so bad, come up with another way.

Again… I was wrong. You want me to be ashamed, thats fine, I’m ashamed. But more than that, I am sorry for what I did to Carter. I beleive the info I have will be enough to keep me out of trouble but hopefully Carter will accept my apology and that won’t even be an issue. Whether what I said could be looked at as truthful on my part is not the issue either, because I now feel that this is not the proper forum for me to air that out. I let my frustration over his “style” of reporting cause me to say something, truthful or not, that I should not have said. Not here…in this enviroment. I WAS WRONG.

Now I am done talking about it on here. If it has caused any of you to lose respect for me, I’m sorry. I’ll have to trade your respect for me for the character and integrity that I want to live my life with.

I do not care one rats’ behind that you think that David Greene’s lame wounded duck passes are better than DJ Shockley’s because you have proven what you know about Georgia Bulldogs’ Football. Where is your Media Guide ?

There is no question in my mind who is the better quarterback, despite the facts that neither have yet to throw their 1st NFL attempt.

Ok, I will back off any concerns over plagiarism and let others argue that. I have only expressed concern that the paper show some integrity. However, I hope Carter is man enough to apologize to Geathers like Hunk Erdown did to him. Carter - show some class and apologize.

Blah, blah, blah - all this talk about OK State. Look for a shoot-out, and the Dawgs will take it by at least 14. Plus, there are some surprises in store on defense this year. Good ones… Hang on dawg fans: it will be a great few years coming up that will keep us talking.

Speaking of keeping on talking - Carter, would you just say you are sorry for slamming young players who get a freaking speeding ticket and making them sound like criminals selling drugs (like those playing for a certain other technical college in the state)??? Geez - you are supposed to report, not make yourself the center of the story around here. Man up and say you are sorry like others have done to you.

Ohhhhkay, lets talk some football now, shall we?

Lets discuss how the DTs will anchor the d-line. I expect our interior guys knifing thru the middle all evening. Then our DEs should contain the edge… rushing from outside-in, of course. Smack Reid in the mouth on the option plays. LBs utilize their speed and pursue to the ball carrier.

This will be a big test for Darius Dewberry. He has a big task at hand, containing/taking on Brandon Pettigrew… an NFL prospect. He could be Reid’s second go to receiver. Dewberry should rely on his speed/quickness to outmuscle Pettigrew’s physical strength.

40 days til kickoff and we can talk football instead of some political crap about the AJC.

trailer huh yellow blood, thats a good one. So much easier to just repeat some lame ol line you read last year, than to answer any of my actual questions? Tell me again how it is that tech is 2 team more pathetic than Vandy????

Good luck on that reply Alt, I wanta get to the island but it may not be untill the game formerly known as the World’s Largest Cocktail Party. It appears we go to the Mayo Clinic mid August for my daughter.

Gotta agree with the big Samoan. I think our D-line attacks through the opposing O-lines to disrupt the flow of play enabling LB’s and DT’s to grab whoever has the ball. I look for something like Patton slicing through France in ‘44. Hope we do not run out of gas as he did. I think we have more depth than he had fuel.

From the “What it’s worth Dept”, but did anyone pick up on the fact that one of the dawgs that Tyler Love spent the day with was Tripp Taylor?

no reply expected, I just can’t imagine how somebody would be so set on coming in here and throwing out those same ol lame putdown, to the point they didn’t even care if they were ridiculing thier own school to do so.

Mayo is a great choice, BTW.

i haven’t heard anything about loves trip to athens. i don’t think taylor could be that bad a person,he worked his tail off, thats for sure. you don’t make the rotation from being a walk on without working hard. not with the depth that ga has. battle did it,but i can’t think of many others.

So what happened with Tyler’s visit and what did he say about his visit? Give us the run down.

Cuz,

Right on brah… we got plenty of gas… good gas that is. Depth is deep in the interior and at the edge of the line. I’m confident of the guys rotating in on the second team. D-lines should be able to stay fresh and replenish more good gas. Gosh, I don’t see why we can’t dominate at line of scrimmage. I think we will. Man, this is our strength on D fellas. Dang, I’m licking my chops just thinking about it.

shane,

Jeremy Thomas, Veron Haynes were the other ones.

The current ones, are Jason Johnson and Trip Taylor, of course.

Speaking of Trip Taylor. Doggone it, we need him in the rotation. What’s the latest on him? I hate to hear him or anybody on the team get involved in the fight like that, but from the sound of it, he didn’t use any physical harm on the kid.

do you think johnson will play? i heard he had a good g-day game. steven white earned a spot, took him two years but he got in on special teams and late in the game at times. he was from little terrell academy in dawson,ga. steven told a friend of mine that he spent 4 hrs a day, three days a week in the weight room. battle was amazing, the little guy was always around the ball.

one of your dog football players indicated “they have a lot of weapons.”

Don’t you guys have weapons also?

By SamoanDawg

July 22, 2007 9:45 PM | Link to this

It’ll be hard for Johnson to push for playing time. He had a good spring… he always does. His chance of playing, is be a back up fullback.

I’m not sure about Steven White. I don’t see him on the roster. Micky White is the only White that I see on the roster.

Other unknown walkons that I really like their game are Drew Williams… this kid is always around the ball on special teams. Too bad Drew is buried underneath all the talents at Safety. Benjamin Boyd is another hardnose guy and Patrick Williams.

Relax Hunk Erdown…Every man is entitled to a retraction if he so feels the need to do so. T’aint Judge Judy’s courtroom. Emotion can play into the scheme of all things football. Ain’t no big deal…It’s the test of another’s gonads to accept an apology, tho…and if I may before I go; The hype of an athlete’s involvement with law enforcement is news to some, but I like the non stories of athletes being given breaks (and they are ) just like average joes…It happens and we don’t hear about it in the ajc…and why should we..?

By NASCARfan

July 23, 2007 9:57 AM | Link to this

Hunk, you know that as long as Bugs, Gaturds, and guys like Lamecock Gary have access to these boards, talking about football between UGA fans isn’t really possible. We might be able to do it for a minute, but when a loudmouth like Lamecock Gary enters the fray, it becomes more like every game I’ve spent at the crappy little pop warner stadium in the slums of downtown Atlanta. You know the one, there’s always about 50 to 60% of Dawg fans there. Anyway, it just turns into all of us making fun of the lame flamers from other teams coming on our boards saying ridiculous things like how the Dawgs won’t win 7 games this year.

Add to that Carter Strickland and his pattented snideness, backhandedness, and loathing for his job, and it’s just not fun sometimes.

Chip can’t get back soon enough.

Got your back Hunk. Keep up the football posts and I will keep up my pititful attempts at humor.

Samoan, brah they are all overlooking our front D. Let them keep overlooking them. It makes for a funnier expression on a QB’s face when he is lying on the ground.

samoan, steven graduated, either last year or the year before. i was just using him as an example of how hard walk-ons have to work to make the team. those scout team guys really earn their bones, and if they make varsity they have worked their tale off, thats for sure. old taylor may have some problems,i’m not sure about that. i am sure about this,if he made varsity as a walk-on,work ethic isn’t one of them.

i have no idea how we will fare versus okie-state. i went on rivals and looked at their roster, they seem to compare pretty well with us,as far as size and weight. i’ll say this, they don’t look like vandy, and we know what happened with vandy last year. i don’t think we will be able to just ram the ball down their throats,at least the way they look on paper. i think we may start slow this year, untill the new linemen get their feet on the ground. i still think 2008 will be our year.
