UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Scouting OK State’s offense
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In talking with Kelin Johnson this morning he made the comparison between Oklahoma State’s offense and the offense thrown onto the field by Boise State a couple of years ago. Both, he said, are difficult because they do so many things and you never really know what is going to come at you.
If you remember, Boise State didn’t have much time to come at Georgia because it was too busy going backwards thanks to several Jared Zabranski interceptions. OSU’s guy, Bobby Reid, who by the way was heavily recruited by Georgia, is a much better runner than Zabranski and can tuck and go rather than throw the picks.
Johnson said an aggressive defense should be able to take OSU out of its comfort zone. But he also warned to not get too caught up in oohing and aahing over the talent OSU has at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Those guys are good, he said. But Johnson said the tight end, Brandon Pettigrew, is the best player on offense. Pettigrew, 6-6, had 24 catches and four touchdowns last season. The Pokes will be missing wide receiver Artrell Woods. Woods injured his back and is out. He was supposed to contend for the spot opposite Adarius Bowman.

With 8 new starters on the defensive side of the ball, none of us have ANY idea what to expect from them…I’ve been told it’s a very fast, athletic group, but we’ll just have to wait and see ! I hope we can score alot of points this year and keep them (DEF.) off the field, unlike last year.

Carter must be sniffing glue because this is actually a good topic. I watched OSU’s bowl game against Bama and their offense is pretty good IMO. I don’t really see the Boise comparison but I guess Kelin knows more than I do. I don’t expect OSU to wet its pants like Boise did and lay an egg.
In other news, ACC police are contemplating charges against Kregg Lumpkin for spitting on the sidewalk. No comment from Mark Richt as of yet.

I think the heat and humidity helped UGA against Boise State, and I do not think it will be any help against OK State. UGA gets into trouble when it thinks “We are the SEC and our speed is all we need to win”. I honestly believe this is what cost us the Sugar Bowl. If UGA has a chip on its shoulder a la Boise State then T. Boone Pickens should have a bad day.

Caleb King getting arrested for having a suspended license when he was driving a friggin MOPED…UGA and ACC police are an absolute joke and this proves my theory about how they are out to get UGA athletes. i cant believe he was actually booked and had to post $2,000 bail. he was probably riding on a moped because he did have a suspended license and couldnt drive a car. why couldnt they just have warned him and let him go?

Steve the Hawk:
The Dallas sports writers took a poll last month of who had the best chance to win the Big 12 conference. #1 was Oklahoma and #2 was Oklahoma State. Keep in mind that this was a poll taken from the writers in Dallas, TX not Stillwater.
I think we can win it for a couple of reasons:
1.) We have a good team and will have home field advantage ‘tween the hedges
2.) The offenses usually take longer to jell in college football due to the small number of allowable practices prior to the first game. I think UGA has the better defense and that will prove to be the difference.I don’t know if DAWGNATION is taking it lightly. It will be one of the more challening first game opponents in recent memory for the Dawgs!

Good point UGA Student:
Can anyone (even tech fans) dispute that UGA/Athens is the only Div-1A school in the country that would arrest a football player because they were driving a MOPED!!! and in the other cases where a player was drinking alcohol (in the offseason, one of whom was over 21) with no other crime committed?
I am expecting to read any day now that a player is arrested for failure to use a turn signal, illegal height of their handle bars on their bicycle, or failure to recycle their Red & Black newspaper.

Oklahoma State’s offense is very good. Their defense is not. They are especially vulnerable to the run.
Defense trumps offense. If Georgia is able to stop their running game like Texas did last year the game won’t be close.
Boise State was 11 -1 and averaged 493 yards on offense and 364 yards on defense the year before they were beaten down by Georgia.
Oklahoma State was 7-6 and averaged 410 yards on offense and 364 on defense last year.
The news media was singing the praises of Boise State and upset talk was rampant among them. I started blogging at that time and chose the blog name reality check because I thought the game would be just that for the media and Boise State.
Oklahoma State should be a good game, but I expect Georgia to be favored and I expect us to win.

Chip, did you read Carter’s blog from yesterday or the day before? The one with the snide remark about Georgia players in trouble again and how it was no surprise to him?
I don’t care if every blog he writes is outstanding. He’s burned his bridges. His attitutude is poor. His snide remarks and sarcasm is wearing thin. He obviously loathes the team and the fanbase. And we are sick of it. He may be your best friend, I personally don’t care.
But he doesn’t treat his job the way you do, Chip. There is no professionalism on his part in his interactions with us and what he writes. Every single article he’s written in the last two weeks was culled from a interview done with Mark Richt a MONTH ago. The Banner Herald already reported that interview and has been writing new stuff in that time. YOU go to Athens to find stories we’re interested in.
Carter Strickland is persona non grata in Bulldog Nation.
We deserve better. I’m sorry if you feel different, because we actually appreciate the hard work, dedication, professionalism, and all around good attitude you have in doing your work.

Chip, hope you’re getting some sleep. I did post the other day about woods injury and followed up about his being out for the season. In this game, it’ll be our Offense trumping their “D” that’ll win the game. They have either 3 or 4 new people on the “D” line, just like us. I wouldn’t be suprised to see the over/under come in around 55. Bobo’s “NEW WAVE ” OFFENSE WILL CARRY THE DAY. BTW, I read the term “New Wave” offense some place so that’s not my saying but I like it.

Don’t take OSU lightly. They are not Boise State—-the big 12 has some real competition. No the big 12 is not as deep as the SEC but, OSU plays OU, Texas, Tex A&M, Texas Tech every year. They also came back and beat a decent Nebraska team last year. Their coach who took over from Les Miles has finally gotten his system in place and its not bad. They have more experience returning than we do. Granted OSU is not as talented overall, but their QB, running back, and a probable all american receiver(which Paul Oliver would have been covering) are probably NFL caliber. Yes we have more talent, depth, and proven coaching. They have more experience and have won a few big games. We should WIN BUT do not take it for granted. P.S. OSU’s defense has stunk since Gundy has been their but it could be a matter of time.

Buck- I’ll take you up on it. I say under. I think they may score 10 on us, we’ll get 30.
Our big weapon this year will be all those red shirts from last year. The offense (New Wave?) will be a big surprise to a lot of folks. We may not run as many times, but it will seem like it because it will be much more productive. Quality vs. Quantity. I think we will go back to a sweep that will be very successful. The key to our offense being great vs. good will be whether our receivers catch the friggin ball or not. I think they will across the board. This could be a very special year for the Dawgs.

Hey guys, this is way, way off topic (that way be welcome here anyway) but I came across an effin doozy a couple of days ago…and I guess it has to be true.
So I’m stuck in traffic in LA and as usual listening to a local talk radio show and they have an interview with arguably the most popular TV personality of All-Time and he’s talking about the fact that his college basketball career was cut short at a small college in MO by the armed services only to be picked back up at, guess where…UGA! Where he wore number 23. I have scoured the internet and have found no confirmation of this, not at official UGA sites or even his official site but he said it and I have the link to it.
So any of you UGA historians out there get out your UGA rosters (JV and Varsity, I assume) from the 40’s and search for the name Robert Barker or Bob Barker!!!! How nuts is that!
This is a quicktime stream and it’s at the official am570radio.com website if you go to podcasts then interviews and scroll down to july 16. He drops the line about two minutes into the interview

Carter has burned some bridges but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t do good blogs like this one.
Chip, we recruited Bobby Reid but not as hard as you think. AJ Bryant and Blake Barnes were both top targets and when they committed the staff was more then pleased. Bobby Reid is a poor man’s DJ Shockley IMO.
Buck, Bobo is not doing anything special. He will introduce more motion and misdirection plays but it will be the same offense with him heading up the meetings and calling the plays from up in the box as opposed to Callway heading up the meetings and CMR calling the plays from the sideline.
Bama’s team and talent is not on par with Ga’s nor their coaching last year. Ok St scores 17 in Athens and a mature Stafford and new dedication to the running game wins with a 33 point effort by the Dawgs.

The blog topic Carter posted Monday there are problems with. Here’s what I said:
By reality check

The blog headline “Does the punishment fit the crime?” is classic AJC reporting
Tell us Carter, what is the punishment here? The headline says there is punishment, but the details were left out. What is it? The readers depend on AJC for facts. And if there is punishment, that means there was a conviction. I didn’t catch what that conviction was for, but obviously it must have occured. After all, you said it was a crime and there was punishment.
Way to go, Carter! Hard hitting AJC investigative journalism at its finest has scooped every other publication.
All you bloggers who have been criticizing Carter need to get with the program and congratulate him and the AJC for such high journalistic standards.
Can the Pulitzer be far behind?
I have no apologies for what I wrote. Tripp Taylor has not been convicted of anything. He is accused of using inappropriate words. If there was any evidence of anything more they would have charged him with it. He hasn’t even been convicted of verbal assault and with an 8 week delay in bringing charges it is unlikely he will be convicted of anything. AJC has already convicted him and questions whether the punishment that has not yet been rendered is enough. Do you think that is good journalism? I do not.
Chip, I don’t hate Carter. I have written more than once on this blog that most of his articles are good, including the two he wrote today on Velasco and Coates. Kudos Carter! Seriously, Carter’s articles are usually well written.
But when it comes to blog topics…the one today was fine, as I said. The one Monday was poorly crafted and illogically negative. Taylor hasn’t been convicted of anything and there has been no punishment handed down. Why the headline “Does the punishment fit the crime”? Explain the logic and substance behind that.
Okay, now I’ve vented.

Oklahoma State will be good, no doubt. Boise State was a BCS team when they made the trek to Athens, too. Richt can now devote himself to the management of the entire team as well as the Lord. Stafford has some things to prove—as do all of our recievers. Martinez will finally shut up his detractors—he runs the same system as Van Gorder and he learned his lesson about not being aggressive enough against Florida. There are times when people jump on Carter for no obvious reason other than maybe because it is fashionable to do so. I have absolutely no respect for him because of something that most readers (who get all their sports info from the AJC) would never know about. With the advent of the internet, I get sporting news from several different sources. I especially like to look up smaller town newspapers and see what they are reporting. A few years ago it became clear to me that Carter Strickland also likes to do that. I read an interesting article that was buried in the pages of a small town paper in the Carolina’s. I liked the writer som much that i bookmarked the site. Several days later Carter wrote an article that was almost word for word; changed just enough so that relevant information would make it look like he actually authored it. The other writer’s style still shined through in Carter’s work. A few weeks later it happened again. Maybe Carter had the guy’s permission, I don’t know, but he didn’t give the original writer any credit in the pieces Carter wrote, he even claimed that he personally interviewed people in the body of work. Since then several other bloggers on here have caught Carter doing the same thing, BuLLdawg has pointed it out several times. If that is not bad enough, Carter also writes as if he actually hates UGA, sometimes it is just snide remarks, others it is blatant. No one can accuse him of being a UGA homer. He has wrote pieces that go beyond mere questions of motive but are imflamatory attacks on the character of student athletes who use NCAA rules to their advantage in completing the academic portion of their College experience. If a student athlete from UGA does something positive you seldom if ever hear anything from the UGA beat writer, but let him ride a moped without a helmet and Carter is all over it.
I won’t slam Mr. Strickland without cause, but I, like the majority of UGA bloggers, feel like we deserve better. If the AJC’s marketing plan is to use a writer that the readers hate so much that it causes tremendous response when he stirs the pot, so be it, but I feel like a much better idea would be to hire someone who is so good and dedicated to his job that the quality of his work is heralded as “The BEST source” of accurate information for UGA fans. Subscrition rates would soar and advertisers would flock to it. There are enough UGA alum business owners (like myself) alone to make it worthwhile. I go out of my way to not only not subscribe or advertise with the AJC but to let others know how terrible the coverage, especially sports, is. So, why am I here? As the AJC knows, and is why they do what they do… its the only game in town.

Great post Hunk Erdown, I’ve noticed the same thing about Carter but never really spoke up. I’m glad somebody finally did. If Carter has ever had an impact on UGA football, it is the fact that Clifton Geathers is now in Columbia and not in Athens. It may not be the only reason, but Carter slamming UGA for giving the youngster a chance probably contributed to it.
Sorry, Chip, but the fans are nearly unanimous on this one. Everything Hunk posted hit the mark, and we are fed up. Congratulations, by the way! If any serious bloggers can answer this for me, that would be great.
Do you think that Carter and other, and I used this term very loosely, “writers” for the AJC get paid based on the number of hits and posts on their blog? If so, could we take his future in our hands and simply NEVER AGAIN post on his blog? Would this not send a very clear message, even more so than us slamming him in our posts? My idea and if anyone reads this, post the same idea on other blogs that are clearly anti-UGA, we simply ignore Cater’s blog. Let the AJC staff make his life harder by encouraging him to report TRUE and RELEVANT sports stories. I’m sure that will be punishment enough for those like Carter who find is hard to do this. anyone else on board? Let this be my last post, EVER, until I see decent report that I would expect from one of our nation’s largest cities.

I have very mixed feelings about Carter for some of the reasons listed above. Today I’m talking about this blog because I think every thing’s been said. Okla. St.: Conyers, 33+17=50, you’re getting close to my 55 o/u. Hunk ER, you’re also right because I didn’t factor any punt or kick off return scores into the equation. This blog is pretty much right on. Who will cover that T.E.? I’m wondering how WM will play the corners. Their WRs have speed so I think he’ll mix up his “D” coverage. The “New Wave Offense” will score 4-5 TDs with Stafford hitting 3 TD passes and Coutu a couple of FGs. Cowboys have the “O” talent to be right there unless our “D” is better than I expect for the 1st game. Could be an exciting “Shoot Out” with the Dawgs winning. I refuse to underestimate the “Pokes”. They may have lost some games but they’re are use to lining up against Texas, OU, Neb. and others so they won’t be intimidated.

The AJC should take these accusations of plagerism seriously. In the journalistic world, it is tolerable to be hated by your readers. Carter qualifies in that area well enough. From a business perspective, it is not in the long-term interest of the newspaper to continue to assign someone who is hated so much to the beat. However, stealing another person’s work is NOT acceptable, and this should be investigated immediately. I call for the AJC to suspend Carter until this can be resolved. That is what has happened to every other newspaper reporter under similar circumstances.

Hunk, I’ve noticed the same thing you’ve noticed. There’s one thing in being a lazy hack-writer, and there’s another thing in being a plagerizing SOB, like that guy from Boston.
I agree with JFERG as well. I’ve tried to get others to not post in Carter’s blog in the past, but as Buck and others have eloquently put it, this is the only game in town, and the AJC is hell bent on giving us Carter Strickland for football season.
I’m sick of being dictated to. I’m sick of having no freedom of choice in this town. I’m sick of Cox Communications. Cox Communications… that’s funny. More like Cox Communists. Because the AJC is no better than Pravda.
Y’all, we seriously need to take an active effort in getting what we want. Maybe it’s time to start a letter writing campaign to all of the rich guys in this city to start up an alternative to this crap. Arthur Blank might be a little busy right now, so why not write Rupert Murdoch? I just want the ALC to have to suffer a little competition. If that would happen, they may not be so quick to force feed us crap like Carter Strickland simply because we’d have another choice in the matter.
The AJC is a sensationalist paper which outright lies in half of the the Georgia stories they’ve printed in the past year, specifically involving student athletes and the law. They tell half truths and refuse to paint a truthful picture of hat actually occured in just about every incident they’ve covered. Carter Strickland is smack dab in the middle of this. Add that to the fact that this paper’s political leanings are woefully out of tune with their consumers (would it KILL the AJC to get a few Libertarian voices on their staff??!!), and this paper really is Pravda.
I know that Carter Strickland is just one part of a larger problem at the AJC. I get that. But Bulldog Nation deserves better. We drive this site. I guarantee that the sports section gets more hits day in and day out (and that’s even when Michael Vick isn’t electrocuting dogs) than any other section in the online paper. And who posts the most? Bulldog Nation. We drive the advertising sales on this website. We’re a powerful entity. And if we could all come together a refuse to post or even look at this site, we’d cripple it. They’d lose easily 1/3 of their daily viewers, maybe more.

Have you ever seen a UGA team with the depth that this team has? It seems like the talent at most postitions runs 3 deep, so close that the subs will be almost as good as the starters. If that is true, we will have some great 4th quarter football. There are only a few positions that we will be in real trouble if the starter goes down. The only thing is the lack of experience. Thats why we need to get leads on people and get everyone game time. All those red shirted freshmen from last year will be chomping at the bit.

The only comment I have on this brewing Carter Strickland debate is that several folks seem to post as if they are bringing something to the attention of the AJC. (or Carter)I’m relatively sure they know full well the man is about as popular as M. Adams around the blog. Here is the thing, Carter is very capable and does so on many occation write very complimantary things about UGA. I can’t really remember any actual article as condesending. So it seems to me that its not so much that he has any hatred for UGA, as much as he has just elected to stick that little slam in on the Blogs as a matter of style. Its pretty evident , that he actually goes to some trouble to phrase things in a way to get some responce. He decided that it encouranged a more lively debate and appeartly his boss is ok with that. I’m sure all it would take is “ok, stop egging them on”
Obviously Chip doesnt have that style. Chip is also interactive. Carter obviously not. I dont dislike Carter, I just wonder why his boss let him develop that little quirk, and why he doesnt realize it serves no purpose.
Since he is simply filling in for chip a few more days, I fully believe he just threw a few lil jabs in there for kicks and old times. You know damn well, that whole staff reads the responces and gets a kick out of his antics.

Come on Dawg Nation, Do you all feel that only your players are above the law? I can promise you that king did not get arrested for doing “Nothing” wrong. And he got his liscensed suspended for doing “Nothing” Wrong too, huh? Get over your ego’s. Your team is slowly catching Miami for the most arrest in a season. Let’s just pray one of the boys don’t get killed. If you had discipline, this wouldn’t be a problem. Maybe Coach Richt should stop papmering the alumni and start watching over his players.

I don’t know about plagerism on sports op eds. Thats kind of a given. I didnt read the columns in questions so, I’ll leave that alone, BUT I’d say half of the papers in the state has a sport writer who is simply regurgitating the same old lines as the others. I actually do look at several papers across the state and even way back to “we need to get rid of Ray Goff” to “Richt needs to run the ball more (or less)” it all pretty much runs together on the lower levels of sports journalism.

Altamaha, it’s one thing to be a pr!ck, as well all know Carter to be, and it’s another thing to be a plagerizer as our man Hunk is flat-out saying he is.
I just hope Hunk can provide suffecient evidence and personally delivers it to the AJC offices himself to ensure something is done about it. I have a feeling that the AJC, if sent the evidence, might conveniently lose it or ignore it. But just like what happened with Ron Borges in Boston, it was in blogs that it was first found out that he directly lifted material for one of his columns without providing credit. And the Boston Globe tried to cover it up for weeks. But the truth will out, as they say; eventually the truth will always come to light.
We can only hope that it happens in this case as well, as we’d all be better served by a more professional beat writer.

If a year ago you asked Carter where he thought he’d be today, I’m sure he would have hoped to have moved on or advanced in some way. Maybe parlay his beat experience into a job he wanted. But he’s still here and “no suprise,” is still churning out the flat monotone work of a man who hates his job but lacks the skill and energy to do anything about it.

Justafan, in case you aren’t aware of the situation, the University of Ga. has the strictest conduct code in the SEC. Coach Richt has very little leeway when it come to punishment. There is no way he can be up at some Lake where a party’s taking place and the next night watch C. King on his Moped. Maybe you should be more aware of the Conduct Code penalties before you make claims about Coach Richt and his players.

The AJC won’t do anything. I tried to get them to and they flat out ignored me. I think it was BuLLdawg that even reprinted articles in the blog with links to the original and they did nothing. When he did that, I saw that it was useless. I even wrote Carter to give him a chance to “fix it”, but I never heard a word from him. I have upgraded computers since I saved any of that stuff, but I feel certain that I could crank up the old one if I had to. It may be like Altahama said, maybe it goes on so much that its ignored/accepted, but I never would have beleived it in the past. I thought it was pretty serious business. Just to be clear, we’re not talking about some press conference where everyone comes away with the same quote, this was where someone had done research and investigation and it was hacked. Anyway, if the AJC were going to do anything about it they would have because it was exposed already.

He evidently has a sense of humor that he thinks our salvos are funny. I cannot fault Chip for standing beside his colleague. He knows the guy better than us and apparently considers him a friend.
As a blogger of years now, I rarely pay the slut that much attention except for the fun I have calling him an ignorant slut. He is no worse than Rambleon, jacketnation or GTDC. And the slut is an improvement over Lameclock Gary.

I hope your right about the D-Line having more sacks than any in the last 10 years, and THAT IS going way out on a limb. If your right, and I HOPE you are, you will be the only one predicting this.
I agree that we have some serious young talent at DE, but they aren’t battle tested (with the exception of Howard). They also weren’t facing experienced Offensive lineman all Spring and from what I understand… Stafford and the other QB’s had plenty of time to throw the ball.
If our DE and DL is able to get incredible pressure in the Fall, why didn’t they all Spring?
I understand that the coaches aren’t doing a lot of blitzing in the scrimmages in the Spring, but still, I’m not sure that we will be as dominant at rushing the passer this year as you envision.

I personally think that nurse Cratchet could be of immense help to Mr. Strickland right now, but as we learned from the techies, She just can’t help those who refuse to admit they have a problem. I still beleive she was a great help to several of the Techies and their masturbation issues. I know this is off topic, but other blogs are shut down. I was scrolling the AJC sports, and reading up on the Vick situation. Scanning the blogs. I am a die hard UGA fan, but that’s mot the point here. However it does involve a UGA alum. I am outraged at the display of racisim coming from the state of Georgia. I am almost embarrassed to say that I am from GA. I have no verdict on Vick. I am upset at the fact that DJ Shockley is being refered to as an “Uncle Tom”. Simply because he is a respectfully you bright African American, No, individual. He has displayed nothing but class since I first read about him as incoming recruit. I don’t blog much, just get on to get my Georgia sports fix. Whether it be UGA, Braves , or Falcons.I know DJ has had to have seen or heard about some of these posts. I want to give him his due, because I know that he will be a bigger man. All UGA alum and fans need defend the remarks being made about him. He didn’t ask for any of this crap. I also would like for the AJC ( if you are listening ) to either shut the Vick blogs down, or do a better job monitoring what is beint typed. Paid $1.7 million dollars by Arthur Blank before last season, DJ Shockley stood more likely to play in an NFL game than did David Greene. Both David Greene and DJ Shockley are graduated cum laude at UGA, but DJ Shockley’s grades were higher than David Greene’s were. DJ Shockley won more games against the other Top 2 teams in the SEC East and against the Top 2 teams in the SEC West than did David Greene who in fact had a losing record against the vols (3-1), LSU (1-2), Florida (1-3) and Auburn (2-2) as the Starting Quarterback as David Greene was 7-8 against these other Top 2 teams in the SEC East and the top 2 teams in the SEC West. DJ Shockley in fact had a winning record as the starter against the same teams.
So, today now Dawg Sports states once again that DJ Shockley not only faired well under Coach Richt here, but should be the starter if Arthur Blank is serious about the integrity of his players, one versus another.
http://www.dawgsports.com/story/2007/7/18/21371/5447
And, The Albany Herald stops short of saying that DJ Shockley should be the Starting QB of the Falcons in 2007 with the Michael Vick indictment on felony charges yesterday, but they too today are calling for the opportunity for that as well.

Joey Harrington at 6’ 4” and 220 lbs starting his 6th NFL season, has not done a damn thing in the NFL. Nothing.
Joey Harrington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DJ Shockley, nor David Greene, has ever played in one single NFL game. Both have played preseason games and there too, DJ Shockley has been far better than David Greene.
Far better.
By everyone’s assessment thereof.
As I said in 2001 when Coach Richt red-shirted DJ Shockley that he would be a better NFL Quarterback than weak-armed David Greene’s wounded ducks. DJ Shockley has a better arm and more accurate than Michael Vick. DJ Shockley is 4.56 in the 40-yard dash compared to 4.29 for Michael Vick, but what is a Quarterback supposed to do ?
Kill 17 dogs ?
http://www.dawgbone.net/picsoftheweek/uga-vick.JPG
For his NFL career, Joey Harrington has 25 fumbles of which he has recovered 6 compared directly thereto his zero (0) Touchdowns rushing ever in the NFL.
And, has 72 TDs Passing with 77 Interceptions.
Joey Harrington | NFL Football at CBS SportsLine.com
Who is the Best Quarterback on the Atlanta Falcons’ NFL Roster today ?
I agree with The Albany Herald today that DJ Shockley should and will get his opportunity to play in the NFL before David Greene does, as I have said all along.
Joey Harrington is not the damn answer, # 1 is, as he was here at UGA, and as he is in life at everything DJ Shockley has ever done at anything.
At 6’ 0” DJ Shockley weighs in at 214 lbs. of perfect fit for the Falcons’ misguided attempts to design their football team around a $150 million dollar contract of a QB no taller than DJ Shockley but faster with a worse arm than DJ Shockley, and when he was at UGA, he, like Thomas Brown today was our Best Athlete on the team in every test.
DJ Shockley has never shot a bird to any child in any stands ever, let alone our own Georgia Dome as Michael Vick.
And, the NFL Commissioner is quite clear about the LIES of Michael Vick that he “knew nothing about any of this dog-fighting” at his $750,000 home in Virginia he tried to sell for $350,000 stopped by the Feds.
Of the $150 million dollar contract for Michael Vick, he has been paid less than one-third of Arthur Blank’s monies, and will not ever get one more penny.
By BuLLdawg
July 20, 2007 4:12 AM | Link to this
Nothing can be done about Virginia’s Matt Schaub, whom DJ Shockley was not going to get ahead of on the Depth Chart.
But, Joey Harrington ?
Easy.
Which probably leaves Bobby Petrino (Auburn offered the job to and fired their president and athletics’ director for doing so) at the crossroads in 1st NFL Training Camp Practice of asking Arthur Blank to go get him a taller quarterback who is a Starter or at least has played in an NFL Game, because Michael Vick will be in Court that day pleading ignorance – which is self-evident.
His professional career on the line, Bobby Petrino is in a fix.
The Falcons, who have never given one of the 55 current NFL players from UGA or any in the past an opportunity – ever – have never had a winning record two seasons in a row.
The Falcons had a losing record last season.
The Falcons are not a very good team. I have no allegiance to the Falcons, having given up my season tickets in 1969 – after several years of such bumbling of personnel.
When does the heat begin anew on a Falcons’ Head Football Coach ?
1st day of Camp coming up now.
When the # 1 Quarterback with the # 1 on his Jersey, DJ Shockley moves up on the Depth Chart from # 3 to # 2.
And, waits and watches.
As he did at UGA.
And, what has DJ Shockley done with the Falcons ?
Been the best Quarterback in every preseason game he has played so far.
And, at the bargain basement price of $148 million 300 hundred thousand dollars less on his contract.
So, if Arthur Blank has to take a hit on the salary cap by being forced to accelerate the monies already paid Michael Vick of less than one-third of the $150 million dollar contract, then Arthur Blank has plenty of room under the salary cap with DJ Shockley.
The Falcons ain’t going to be any good anyway.
Face it.
Arthur Blank, sir, do as have every one of the folks who led to Michael Vick’s Jersey being # 2 in sales (now today number 34 and dropping), and just cancel the contract with Michael Vick as have already every single sponsor – who all 7 have fired Michael Vick.
DJ Shockley is an NFL Quarterback, unlike David Greene. And, he is the Best Quarterback on the roster for the Falcons Training Camp Day 1.

Against NFL competition, not PAC-10 miserable competition, Joey Harrington has been dubbed the single worst NFL Draft Bust ever selected by the Detroit Lions with the third pick overall in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. Journeyman Harrington lost his job to no-name nothings at Detroit and was released. He caught on with the Miami Dolphins and there, continued his misery in the NFL. At this point, with the impending at the time indictment of Michael Vick (which Vick denied to NFL Commissioner in April that he knew anything about any of it), Arthur Blank saw Joey Harrington as his Savior. Bobby Petrino has cast his lot in his professional career with a worse than journeyman Quarterback who, in now his 6th season has thrown for more interceptions than he has TDs. (Sound like a familiar tale ?) And, fumbled the football more than he has scored TDs rushing (Again, sound like a familiar tale ?)
Among the 55 former Georgia BuLLdawgs in the NFL today ( http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/alumni-tracker/school/5813 ) compared to the less than half The BuLLdawgs’ total of 55 with only 27 former Oregon Ducks in the NFL today (http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/alumni-tracker/school/4846 )is DJ Shockley.

DJ Shockley led UGA to the SEC Championship the year before Matthew Stafford became our Starting Quarterback. DJ was The SEC Championship Game MVP and leads All-Time in our 115-year UGA Football History as our Season Record Holder in both Total TDs scored, and TD Passes thrown. For his 5-Year Career at UGA behind the same OL, to the same receivers, against the same opponents, DJ Shockley (who had 11 percent of the snaps in the seasons he shared with David Greene who had 89 percent of the snaps by contrast), DJ Shockley had a better TD to Interception Ratio than did David Greene, threw for a better Yards per Attempt, better Yards per Completion, completed a higher percentage of his attempts, and had a higher TD per play than did David Greene on the same field at the same time as David Greene.

One of the things I don’t understand is where is UGA in Atlanta ? Tampa started winning when they started drafting Fl players. When you look at the NFL, you see all of these great players from UGA. Champ, Hines, Thomas Davis, the list goes on. Every year in the Super Bowl, UGA is represented.

If by QBs coming out early, you are referring to Matthew Stafford who proved beyond a shadow of the doubt that he was not ready last season, but had to play (to do nothing positive and all negative in the game such as against Kentucky and such as against intramural vandie), but had to play because he doesn’t have to practice and wait and learn but can lie to Coach Richt no drinking by him at Talladega infield and thus not be suspended 1.2 games like both of his backups should be as well like DJ Shockley had to do behind David Greene and then Michael Vick and now behind Joey Bloody Harrington, well I of course am like everyone else NOT IMPRESSED by his 237 lbs. nor his 10 fumbles to only 3 Rushing TDs nor by his 13 interceptions to only 7 TD passes.
Nor his work ethic or leadership of a woefully lead BuLLDawg group of arrested misfits - except of course for LIAR Matthew Stafford.
And, dropouts - including but not limited to the ONLY All-America on the team for this next season now plying his trade at contender San Diego Chargers.
As for Carter Strickland’s typical BS articles, he was demoted from UGA Beat-writer conceding that job to Chip Towers for his BS nasty statements about a fine young man in **THIS BLOG Clifton Geathers :

I am not very impressed with the Braves, nor their discord of Chipper Jones and ACE John Smoltz who owns the Barnacles’ Restaurants - mostly because Chipper is seen as better than Andrew Jones, which of course, he is not close.
A better hitter yes, but 10 years after Chipper Jones has quit learning how to field as well, run the bases as well, and throw as well as Andrew Jones, Andrew will have hundreds of more Home Runs and RBIs too than Chipper, who is ahead by like 9 Home Runs in more seasons “played” than Andrew has.
Andrew, like all major leaguers from islands South didn’t get here hitting curve balls.
Andrew Jones leads the Braves in Home Runs and RBIs yet again this season.
And, has made .250 points more on his batting average if you subtract Chipper Jones’ miserable fielding and miserable arm and miserable base-running where he runs sideways with his feet in the mud.
Chipper will always have a better batting average than Andrew Jones, but Chipper (since the ban on steroids in baseball coincidently) has played what ?
Two-thirds of the games ?
Fewer ?
Baseball is more than a batting average if you are always injured and cannot play through it always unable to field or throw or run the bases, and football is more than a QB “winning” 41-11 as our Starter when he had a losing record against the other top 2 teams in the SEC East and the 2 top teams in the SEC West, unlike DJ Shockley with a winning record against the same teams as our starter when DJ Shockley - not David Greene - owns ALL the Season Records for UGA Quarterbacks both TD Passes thrown and TDs scored.

I didn’t think Stafford should have started this past season. I saw improvement at the end of the season. Was Cox and Barnes just not as talented as their highly recruitments warranted ?

We don’t know anything about Blake Barnes except that he is NOT A LIAR.
Coach Richt has made some poor choices in personnel.
And, continues with what remains the starting line-up this up-coming season, he and Willie Martinez said THEY BOTH were going to change.
When ?
You cannot tell me Reshad Jones was not ready last year but Matthew Stafford was and therefore had to be played because he only going to be here 3 years either way.
Nor that Kelin Johnson is better than Reshad Jones either.
No one can make either statement.

2 questions, do you think Coach Richt was put under presuure to start Stafford ? Also, do you think UGA is getting such quality players that he is holding them back for fear that they will leave for the pros early ? I can’t tell with freshman by reading the paper. I have to see them play as highschool seniors.

Joe Cox and Tereshinski III both had a higher percentage of passes completed, higher TD to Interception Ratio, higher TD per play, more yards per pass attempted and fewer fumbles per play than Matthew Stafford who was DEAD LAST on our own UGA Team last season againt the same opponents, on the same days, with the same OL, and with the same receivers.
By BuLLdawg

I think Stafford was our QB of the future and that had any other UGA QB played his 77 percent of the snaps, which is what Matthew Stafford had last year being the only UGA QB to play in every game and two (2) others each ONLY playing in 4 games, that UGA would not have lost to Kentucky nor intramural vandie.
I am ready for a leader to develop in Matthew Stafford, but find his off-season drinking and lying and not being pointed out by Chipper Towers as being either one of the leaders in practice this Spring or this Summer nor being one of the ones he singled out (having singled out the entire team ELSEWISE ) in practice this Summer yet again as working to do somehting about 237 lbs. 12 interceptions and 10 fumbles (6 not flopped upon by his “struggling” OL makeshift Offensive Line who only finds themselves making NFL rosters this season today and being 2nd best in the SEC in giving up sacks last season) - all a major concern that he feels he arrived and is better than everyone else.
Which is what he showed in the games showing up every player on the team on every play that didn’t go his way when he fired his bullets - BLANK - as they were.
While every other UGA QB was far better in every single category of judging a QB.
I have seen them play on the same days, with same OL, and same receivers against same opponents and all do better than Stafford.

I know alot of people was on our defense last year because, they couldn’t get off the field. I thought it was simply that our offense could not sustain a drive long enough to give the D a breather. Do you think Bobo will get back to running the ball ? How can you have the best FB in football and not line up and pound. It is easier to run block than pass block.
By BuLLdawg
July 20, 2007 6:18 AM | Link to this
Anyone on our Defense last season, Number 8 in the United States of America in NCAA Total Defense, is out of his ever-loving mind.
The Defense remained all you saw when you watched UGA games last season because our not-ready-for-prime-time QB had 23 miscues (13 interceptions to 7 TD passes) and 10 fumbles (to only 3 rushing TDs by him).
The reason why we did not pound the ball with our FB and RB situation as it is behind that great OL, is because Matthew Stafford called his own number in the huddle like he our best running back with 10 fumbles and 3 rushing TDs.
BS.

Which is all Head Coach Richt and Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo have said all Spring and ALL SUMMER LONG that Matthew Stafford must quit relying on the Number 8 NCAA Total Defense (which we AIN’T GOT this coming year - with the line-up yet announced), and ” START PUTTING SOME VALUE ON THE DAMN FOOTBALL “
By jason
July 20, 2007 6:27 AM | Link to this
was the Defense really #8 ? I am not saying they were bad. Just that they were on the field an awful lot. The Vtech game, the first half.3 and out, 3 and out, mix in a turnover, and 3and out.

I would have thought his options to be limited as a FR QB. The most frustrating thing to me the past few years was the willingness to not run the ball. Brown, Lump, and Ware. Now, Brown, Lump, Moreno, and possibly King.

Virginia Tech, I gues you forgot that Matthew Stafford had yet again fumble and interception in the 1st half putting us behind ?
Or, that against unranked in any of the final polls, Georgia Tech, Matthew Stafford AGAIN fumbled the football to start the game, under our goal posts, only to watch YES the NCAA Number 8 Total Defense, hold Tech to the field goal and give Tech the lead they would HOLD until the very end of the game when Mohamed Massaquoi reached behind him and jumped into the air to snag a poorly thrown pass for the winning TD ?
Then, you surely missed in the 3rd from the last game of the season too that Matthew Stafford fumbled twice more leading to the only scores Auburn had, or the NCAA Number 8 Total Defense gets a damn shut-out of Auburn ?
Just as he did the Spring G-Day Game through interceptions (another which should have been by Reshad Jones) and fumbled the damn football yet once again ?
Call it like it is.
He needs to work on this, not be told he is the best UGA QB ever, which so far, he is the worst QB on our own team.
Don’t you look up Jason the season UGA’s Defense had to be Number 8 NCAA Total Defense last season ?
Or, rely on Carter Strickland to tell you they were NO GOOD ?

Exactly, It’s not just carter I noticed alot of bloggers were saying that also. I guess the defense was so good that you only noticed was when they had a difficult time on the field. I only remember three things from the Tech game. one, the fumble recoverey by Taylor, two moMass’s catch, I still don’t know how in the heck he caught that. And three, UGA’s defense was dominating.

I guess the offense made the defense look bad. As far as short field to defend and such. I know it seemed like eveytime the defense was on the field they were on the short side of the 50.

NASCAR, Fans of Chan was founded about 2 years ago to show some love and respect for a fine man - Chan Gailey. Nurse Cratchett was our inspirational leader in this endeavor. She is not a football fan, but she was alerted about this blog by reports that surfaced in an anger management group she was facilitating. She was appalled at the vilification being shown to the Tech coach by Tech fans and there were those of us on this blog who were transformed by her compassion and insight. We understood for the first time that all the name calling was not only unnecessary but also counterproductive. Everybody round here knows you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. Our Mamas all told us that. We just needed Nurse Cratchett to explain that works on bees too.
Thus was Fans of Chan created, and I am proud to be one of the founders.
I believe it may be time for a meeting. This blog has become dispirited, and as godawg points out the level of dialog has turned negative again. It was better for a while when Chip took over after the Clifton Geathers debacle BullDawg referenced, but now that Carter is back in charge this blog is in trouble. I believe Fans of Chan can help.

BuLLdawg, I have got to agree with you on Harrington. After watching him and 3 #1 WR picks still lose in Detroit was painful. Of course the Lions are as mismanaged as the old Falcons.
As for Stafford I have to disagree and it is my opinion that Richt shouldn’t have held off on naming Stafford the starter if that is what he truly felt was the best thing. Obviously he thought it was the best thing or Cox or Barnes would have been starting more games. Stafford did come through on those last three games and really matured as a leader on the field. I now have the confidence that if we have to drive the field to win a game that it will and can be done.
And yes the defense was very good last year they just spent too much time on the field.

It’s almost time and I’m glad.BullDawg, you layed out the stats and given your opinion about Mattehw Stafford. That’s your right and I hope you stay on his back. Why? Because the ‘07 season will show that you are good with stats but don’t know a darn thing about leadership. Also, you must know more than Coach Richt and the members of the team because after the spring game CMR saud that there was no question that Stafford was the leader and had learned and grown a lot. His team mates said the same thing. So you’ve had your same old repeated comments posted again and I’ll just let Stafford play it out this season and see what he does. My Boy is a winner!

Altahama, a very weak moment. Someone posted that we have the best RB in FB. Whoever thinks that is off base. Lumpkin finally started to hit his stride toward the end of last season when he figured out how to block. I hope this is a GREAT year for him but with every thing that’s been said by the Coaches, Bobo being the lead as the “OC”, some Dawg fans don’t seem to understand that our “O” is built around the QB. With his talent he’ll get the ball to the play makers then they’ll have to do their job. If we understand that going in then for better or worse we’ll know our “O”.

Bold Predictions:
Oklahoma State will win at Georgia
My prediction:
Georgia will win!
Game plan against their O:
1st and foremost… we have to and we can stop their running game. Our front four must control the line of scrimmage consistently.
2nd. Force the Pokes to be one dimensional. The rest will take care itself.
Our O should have no problem moving the ball and score. No punting necessary.
