UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Does the punishment fit the crime?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Another Georgia player is in trouble. No big surprise. This time it is Tripp Taylor, a walk-on who had turned himself into a contributor for Georgia. Taylor allegedly was involved in a fight at a lake in May. Now depending on who you talk to, Taylor tried to break up the thing. Others say there may have been more than just Taylor involved. The police are sorting out the details.
So Taylor will most likely be suspended for at least the first game. Not a huge deal because he was a backup defensive tackle. But Georgia does rotate its tackles a ton. What is a bigger deal is that Taylor adds to the list of guys who will not play against Oklahoma State. Tripp Chandler and Ian Smith, two other players who will be key contributors this season, will also be suspended that first game.
Oklahoma State does have four newcomers on its defensive line. But still losing a tight end and an offensive lineman is never good.
Mark Richt’s hands are pretty much tied when it comes to the punishments of these players. Athletic department policy dictates most of the suspensions. So, the question is: Are the policies too harsh, too soft, or just right?

Carter Strickland——-If Taylor had a major roll in this and it’s as bad as it sounds, consideration should be given to kicking him off the team. It’s too soon to know exactly what happened or his roll. Again if the worst is true however coach Richt can’t allow his words to become hollow and hypocritical. Is this school the redneck U the jokes allude to ? Assaulting a 16 year old and making threats isn’t a stupid mistake like underage drinking, they are violent criminal acts and should be dealt with as such.

The post didn’t go through before,I’ll try again. If Taylor is guilty of the worst of this he should be kicked off the team. That’s IF.We’ll see how it looks when everything comes out.Beating and terrorizing a 16 year old isn’t just a stupid mistake like drinking at a race.Again if he assaulted and threatened a kid a one game suspension would give validity to all the redneck U jokes.

Carter Strickland, by “no big surprise” I assume that you mean by dealing with a bunch of high energy teenage boys who are used to contact sports as a way of life, getting into scuffles is no big surprise for anyone in the country. OTHERWISE it come across as some kind of indictiment about the team that you cover (albiet begrudgingly)

WOW!!!! a UGA player in trouble again. It’s been at least 3 weeks, so look at the bright side of it Carter. 3 freaking weeks, that’s pretty good for ThUGA!
I wonder how many other UGA players or fans were involved. You know there was, that’s the only way they fight, when they have someone out-numbered.

It happened off campus, there was no connection to the University, the other FB player involved has been charged with a much more serious crime. This 16 yr. old kid. How big is he? was he throwing punches? Some member of the group say that Taylor was trying to break up a fight. It took this long before the police decided to file a misdemeanor charge? IMO opinion there are way to many questions around this incident to “rush to judgement”.I don’t know but if someone does please post. DOES THE UNIVERSITY CONDUCT CODE APPLY WHEN THE SCHOOL NOR ANY OF IT’S TEAMS ARE INVOLVED AND IT DIDN’T HAPPEN ON CAMPUS? WHAT IF A PLAYER WERE IN L.A. OR ON SOUTH BEACH IN MAY AND GOT INTO A FIGHT WHO GIVES ANYONE THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE AUTOMATICALLY A PENALTY? IF BECAUSE HE’S A PLAYER AND THE H.C. WANTS TO THEN IT’S THE COACHES CALL NOT THE SCHOOL’S.

Not sure if the crime meets the punishment because not enough facts are known in this case yet but I’m sick of stuff like this happening over & over every summer. I love CMR & think he’s what we’ve been looking for since Dooley retired because he’s finally got us going towards national championship opportunities. However I know we’re talking about young men but can’t we have one off season with NO issues? It’s been everything from ring gate to fights to drinking to keg gate to academic issues & I’m sure there something I missed. I’m aware that this stuff happened in the past but wasn’t publicized like in today’s information age, maybe it’s just me but it seems like we have more of this happening than other schools do. We’ve got to figure out what can be done to make the players understand that doing something stupid effects then entire team & they’ve got to be accountable not to put themselves in a bad spot. Just stop the insanity already!

somehow, I think the university policy on underage drinking, is getting mixed up in this discussion about a potential fighting issue.
Carter is the only one who says there is anything automatic about a suspension. I don’t think fighting off campus breaks any University policies. I do think the coach holds them to higher standard, and will (they do represent, are on scholarship) and as always will let it all settle out first.

What is CMR supposed to do, lock em in a dorm room till practice starts? I’m sure most of us here have had beers on the lake and thrown a punch at someone before (except tech fans). Tripp was accepted and attended the US Naval Academy. Do any of you know how hard it is to get in there? Yes, even harder than tech. I can tell you the ONE thing that the service acadamies do look at is character. Give me break. I’m sure this is an isolated incident. UGA players are always getting busted for drinking underage. I’m still willing to let the situation play out and see what the investigation uncovers. If it’s determined that he’s guilty, maybe we need to take a page out of Joe Pa’s playbook and have the entire team clean the stadium after each home game. Nothing else seems to be working for us. Every time I think it’s been a while and we’re in the clear, some other stupid incident surfaces.

There is way more to this story than has been published. Yes Buck, let it play out. Some friends of mine were close by and the tale being told that night is a little different concerning the boy with the knife. Not as innocent as simply “cutting on a piece” of wood when someone out of no where picks a fight with him for no reason. Happens all the time… just sitting around whittling a stick and some stranger decides that is a perfect time to start a fight? Let’s just wait and see how this thing plays out before we kill some kid’s future, okay? Maybe the other football player went too far and admits he did, but as far as I know, Tripp has made no such admission of guilt and deserves the due process of the court. I don’t blame Carter for the incident or reporting on the incident, but Carter is very irresponsible for the way he reports these stories and his flippant way of putting UGA in a bad light no matter what. The AJC knows that UGA fans don’t want him as the beat writer for UGA, but they insist on sticking him down our throats. That is why I not only no longer subscribe to the AJC, but I network with other realtors to let new homeowners moving in to our area that there are far better news sources. When we put together welcome packages for new folks moving in, we work with the local Chamber of Commerce to make sure people know that the AJC is not an option when you are looking for a newspaper that caters to the citizens of metro ATL. I am not so naive as to beleive we are having a huge impact on the AJC’s revenues, but it sure makes us feel better about how pitiful we as UGA fans are treated when it comes to something as simple as having a beat writer that covers his beat in a fair and balanced attempt. Carter Strickland is lazy and the majority of his work that is worth reading was mysteriously reported on almost word for word by someone else the day before, in another locale. The rest of it leaves ink on your butt if you use it for what is worth using it for.

Let’s just all jump to conclusions since it involves a UGA football player… a player on a team where one drinking incident is an automatic 1.2 game suspension … where other teams have players arrested on much worse charges … and never get suspended … just run a few bleachers … if it was not for CMR being so tough on things like this … it would never hit the news … “X number of UGA players suspended for game one.” Everyone gets so excited quoting that one …
Come on Tech fans - you had a player charged with trafficing drugs and he played … SC”U”s QB has been arrested twice for drinking and one for a bar room fight … and he is still playing.
When all the facts are out on Tripp then the punishment should be determined. Not until then .. but, isn’t it fun to play these childish games … just because you secretly wish you were a Georgia Bulldog? (Or you want to make a headline … how in this heck did this topic deserve a blog with little to nothing known)
O’ NOOOOO… the AJC does not spin any story it can on UGA to the negative … how about their spin on the CNNSI article where the AJC called UGA’s schedule soft … and SI had it has the 14th toughest in the country … They had to change that one quick … in oder to try to save face. No wonder this paper is losing so much circulation and can’t stop the bleeding.
Man … I feel better …

It’s amazing that they still don’t know what his role was in the fight but I think it’s pretty simple. If he took part in the beating, he should be gone and I have complete confidence that’s exactly what Richt would do because he’s removed plenty of other players in the past for lesser transgressions. If he was really trying to break it up then obviously, that’s a different story.
As for all the ridiculous flame messages from rival fans, take a look in the mirror. Name a team that hasn’t had some off-field issues recently. Sadly, it’s a pretty short list. The difference is that Richt/UGA actually suspends their players whereas they never miss a down at other schools. Plus, this is the first time in several years that we’ve heard allegations of true thug behavior (drinking beer does not qualify). They sure can’t say the same at UF, UT or most other rival schools.

Does anyone remember that Richt kicked him off the team for an entire year and suspended him for 3 games another season? Also, Odell was recruited by Jim Donnan folks, not Mark Richt. Richt inherited the guy and dropped the hammer pretty hard in terms of discipline. He’s probably the ONLY guy in Odell’s career — HS, college, or pro to actually show some backbone.
If you want to blame Richt for the fact that UGA players get in trouble too often, fine. But to claim that he’s soft on discipline is simply not true. Richt has proven to be among the most strict disciplinarians in all of college football. He imposes multiple game suspensions, entire season suspensions, and kicks players off the team entirely and he’s done so for relatively minor offenses. Meanwhile, players guilty of far worse such as theft, assault, drugs, etc. never miss a down at other schools. They miss only spring practice.

First, IF this young man is guilty of what is contained in the allegations, then he should be be punished. First by the judicial system. Then, the University of Georgia should treat him as they would any other student in a similar situation. Finally, Coach Richt would then choose whatever punishment is deemed appropriate if the young man is still qualified to play football after the other two “punishments” have been carried out, since each, in the order I have listed them, may make the following one(s) unnecessary. Notice I said “IF”. Accusations are easily made. I guess no one learned anything from the Duke Lacross debacle.
Now, as to Mr. Carter Strickland. I have finally been “converted” to the “get rid of Carter” camp. You may notice that there are little things called advertisements at the top of this blog. I will open a Carter Strickland blog only long enough to find the advertisers and then contact them with the information that I will boycott their products or services as long as they continue to advertise on a Carter Strickland blog. I urge other UGA fans to do the same.

Gator fans need to think twice before coming on here and mocking UGA fans about arrests. If it wasn’t for this they would not be champs!
After Jarvis “Puffy” Moss jumped up (Ganja increased his vertical by 18″) and salvaged the croc’s season against the Gamecocks by blocking a last second field goal attempt, it was revealed he to also failed a drug test during the summer as the clock ticked to zero. Guess what game he missed? The showdown between top ranked UF versus division 1AA Western Carolina.

You know at the end of the day we can look over a couple of kids who had a couple of to many beers and put themselves in bad situations, but one thing you cannot overlook is the low character of a thieve. Channel 11 had the alledged victims on a while ago and as previously stated, they are pretty big boys. Before any facts get out, since so many are already willing to hang Taylor without the benefit of the doubt, I want you to imagine, based on only what the victim said, what Taylor saw. He is on stretch of cove where it is dark except for maybe a campfire, He hears some sort of conflict going on, there are beer cans littered all over the ground and sees a guy He doesn’t know that weighs well over 200 lbs, holding a hunting knife while arguing with Taylor’s friend. Who knows what happened next, and I realize it’s been since Memorial Day, but the two guys on TV had no bruises or physical damage… No slings, casts, or bandages. They did not appear to be little helpless weaklings, in fact they appeared to have spent a lot of time in the weight room. I don’t know what all happened out there, but I truly have a feeling that there is much more to this story. Who’s beer was it? Where were these minor boys’ parents? What was he doing with a knife? Why did he coincidentally have his knife out just before the trouble started? Can’t ask any hypothetical questions about Taylor yet because… HE HASN’T TOLD HIS SIDE OF THE STORY YET!!!

Thanks, Lowcountry Bulldog for bringing up William Bell and James Reese. The did steal a textbook and Coach Bobby Ross suspended them for an entire season. Not just the first game or two. Until Richt gets serious and drops the hammer, everyone wil continue to see him for what he is….a coach in charge of a renegade program.

Renegade program? Get a grip. A lot of college students get in fights and drink, that’s just a fact of life. College athletes are no different. 30 years ago you wouldn’t even know about 95% of these kinds of incidents. The sad thing is that writers like Carter Strickland make a living off of smearing young men’s names so they can try to advance their careers. I hope you can sleep at night CS.

I don’t mean to start a new blog topic here, but how would you guys rank the best SEC coaches? I’m a Pac 10 fan, so here’s my take on it:
1) Evil Genius - this guy is hated across America, but knows how to motivate kids and win the head games battle. He would go undefeated with UGA or UF’s current talent. At SC, 8-5 is all he can count on.
2) Saban - hated and loved by all. Knows how to recruit and coach, yet intimidate. He’s a work-a-holic and has a NC to his credit.
3)Urban - recent NC coach, time will tell how he performs with his own recruits.
4)Richt - A little soft and maybe too nice, but recruits well, and kids aren’t afraid to play for him. 2 recent SEC’s are very impressive. He’s matured a lot recently and it shows by him turning the offense over to Bobo.
5) Tie-Phat Phil/ Tubby - What can I say? Phil won a NC playing FSU’s third QB, and Tubby went 13-0 in ‘04. 6) Les Miles - impressive at Ok St and respectable at LSU. 7) Houston Nutt - It can’t all be McFadden and Jones can it? 8) Bobby Johnson - Vandy has been respectable as of late. 9) Orgeron - a USC product in a tough situation. 10) Croom - A Bear Bryant disciple 11) Rich Brooks - who else will take this job?
What are your thoughts?

George-
There’s no doubt that Spurrier is and will go down as a great SEC Coach, but at some point he has to earn that at South Carolina. He can’t ride his fame from Fla forever. If and when he proves that he can turn their program around by actually winning an SEC title at S.C. he will move up, but until S.C. actually accomplishes more than they did before he got there, which is pretty much being an occaisional spoiler, he can’t be #1. He has helped their recruiting some, but right now if there is a blue chip player in S.C. Richt has a better chance of signing him than Spurrier. Pretty much the same for Saban, imo. He’s got to take Bama fom the dregs of the SEC west before he gets the accolades he earned at LSU. Urban Crier? I don’t know, let’s see how that spread does now that he says he is finally ready to commit to it. He barely slid by a bunch of bad teams to win that NC last year, but definately he has earned a lot of credit for what he has done in a short time. Richt won 9 games last year in what was arguably his worst year as UGA HC. He won over 60 games in his 1st 6 years, was it 5yrs in a row of at least 10 wins per yr? Stays in the top 10 most of the time and is doing great at recruiting— for the 1st time in UGA history, he is getting top players from all over the Country, when we used to do good to get the best in our state. Here’s the thing that makes the SEC so tough… Hardly any, if any, of the top 8 sec teams would trade their head coach for anybody they could replace him with. If everyone thinks their Coach is the best out there, there must be some damn good coaches in the SEC. So the list of who’s best really depends on who you are asking. If you ask me personally, it has a lot more to with the program that is being built than where the program is now. In UGA’s case, the program is in better shape than it has ever been and is getting better every year. I wouldn’t trade Coach Richt for anybody in the SEC or the whole Country for that matter.

I read the Cherokee Gazette and I’ve picked up all I can find so far. The charge against Tripp is simple assault because of Verbal Abuse. If you haven’t read the paper, do so. Anybody notice what Jackson has to say about his commit? According to SECsports.com, Allen says he’s not switched his commit to Ga. to another school more to come. I wonder why the other player charged had his bail made public, $28,000 and Tripp’s bail hasn’t been mentioned? I guess the difference in charges.

Carter, what does the poll about Mark Richt’s discipline in the UGA football program have to do with this story?? Richt can’t be responsible for what someone does back home during the summer on his personal time, can he? The AJC is just stirring the pot to create controversy…. yellow journalism reminiscent of William Randolph Hearst.
And why should the player be suspended simply because he has been charged…. with a misdemeanor? Sounds as if several boys were involved in beating up this kid, but Taylor was charged with verbal threats, which certainly caused no physical harm to the boy. My guess is that the police want Taylor to become State’s evidence to reveal who the really culpable people are in this in addition to McCluskey, who won’t talk because he has serious charges against him.
Will the next poll be whether Micheal Adams is running a clean academic program whenever an UGA student is charged with some offense wherever they may be around the world? Perhaps the AJC should figure that one out before it lapses into obscurity with its hollow yellow journalism!

Hunk Erdown,
You make good points. I obviously think a lot about Richt as well (#4 is great in this conference). The thing about SOS is that he woke up the nations largest sleeping giant at UF in the 90’s and made that program what it is today. He completely turned the UGA-UF rivalry around and won 6 SEC’s in 10 years in the strongest conference in the nation. Believe me, I can’t stand the guy. Saban is a trader, but a damn good CF coach. The guy makes promises he can’t keep, but he’s a force to be reckoned with. 3rd place was a toss up between CMR and Crier. The argument could be made for either one. When I evaluate Urban, I consider his pre-UF years as well. Great comments though, just my opinion! BTW, UGA is by far my favorite SEC team. Richt is the classiest coach in the league and will one day be #1 on my list. He just needs to put together one magical season and tighten up the discipline some.

After the investigation is completed totally would be the correct time to talk about whether the punishment fits the crime. I cannot figure out how this can be called a fight when there was only two that got beat up……..and how many others did the beating! We are too lenient on our sports figures…..and right now, as it stands, in my opinion, this is a slap on the wrist and the person who hit the guy in the face with the bat needs to be severly punished for sure……..it sounds to me like these guys were looking for someone to beat up and they found someone! Although I am sure the two did say some things to them, there is no reason to beat two guys like this! If we would punish people for crime they commit, maybe things like this would not happen so often! Any way you look at it, doesn’t seem quite right to me that two people got beat so severly!

EVERYONE should be treated the same and NO ONE should be given breaks just because they’re football players or in the case of the ex-Govonors grandson Herman Talmadge III because of who his kin are. Athletes have always underperformed in classes, hogging up the space of a real student and most can’t pass the easiest classes on campus with tutors, special treatment and cheating. Most end up fat and stupid anyway, pulling out old press clips from their ‘glory days’ while selling Buicks for a living. UGA has been wrought with players facing disciplinary actions year after year and they always get by with it. it’s not like they’re SEC or national contenders, their on field performances don’t warrant the special treatment. One of these days one of these lardbutt primadonnas are going to pick on the wrong guy and their coach won’t be there to bail them out, but maybe he can help carry the casket.

To all of those criticizing Richt for suspending players for the Western Ky. or Weber St. game, it has always been policy to
1) decide how many games to suspend a player, and then
2) suspend the player for that many games consecutively, starting with THE VERY NEXT game.
Richt has NEVER decided to suspend a player for a specific game (i.e. against a specific opponent). Once the suspension is decided, it starts with the next game.

If the facts come out that he is quilty, he should be kicked off the team & out of UGA. Plus jail time. Please don’t get me wrong as I enjoy watching college football. But many of these guys are just thugs using up precious school resources. They should get rid of college football as we know it now. Those that want to try to go pro should be in more of a “farm system”. Those that just want to play while getting an education should though still have that option. We surely should have learned a lesson from Nifong and his quick, overzealous handling of the Duke Lacrosse Case. We shouldn’t be too quick to rush to judgement. Evidence is still being gathered, testimony must be presented by participants/witnesses. There may have been more being done with the knife than just whittling. Then the situation became more inflamed with the consumption of alcohol. We need to keep in mind there’s three sides to the story; his, theirs, and the truth. One final comment, this Etowah-Woodstock rivalry is a bunch of crap. Many of us have friends with children attending each school. Compete respectably and honorably then leave the game on the campus. I believe these boys ALL now realize their mistakes and they’ll have live with them and pay for them. We should allow the authorities to perform their duties. While I may read parts of the AJC, I find it hard to purchase/support the AJC due to columns/blogs just like this one.

Don’t you mean if Carters insinuations are true? Did you felllows actually read the story before expressing an opinion on it? We enable the abusive off field behavior of intellectually challenged athletes all for the sake of the big game. Well, the big game and to satisfy the homoerotic cravings many men have towards that big strapping football player they secretly and often times unbeknownst to them… have sexual cravings for. I had no choice but to deal with all types of gray matter challenged athletes in my undergrad days but thankfully not in grad school. Do we really need to foster more Pacman Jones’ and their criminal behaviors? Grow up guys, it’s just a game. Have you noticed how many of our first husbands were former athletes but our second husbands are not? We grew tired of the game talk, the shallowness and yes, the bad sex.

I SEE JOURNELISM AT IT’S WORST IN THIS ARTICLE. IT IS SAD TO TAKE THIS SITUATION AND MAKE IT MORE ABOUT THE FACT THAT Tripp Taylor PLAYS FOR UGA, THAN THE FACTS SURROUNDING THE INCIDENT. I READ THE YOUNGER BOYS THAT WERE ” ATTACTED” HAD A KNIFE AND THAT IS WHAT STARTED THE ALTERCATION. I WAS NOT THERE, BUT I DO KNOW TRIPP TAYLOR IS A CHRISTIAN. I AM SURE HE WOULD TRY TO STOP SOMETHING LIKE THIS RATHER THAN START IT.

Seriously?
it shouldn’t be a matter of whether he was a UGA football player or not. It also shouldn’t matter the size of the 2 victims. It should matter that these guys are in COLLEGE and should not be acting like that. To all the people who say look at the size of the victims they’re not the typical 16 &17 year olds…. IT DOESN’T MATTER!!! Ganging up on 2 boys who are at least 3-4 years younger than you is NOT right in any way at all, and if you think that its ok for that to happen b/c of their size then shame on you!
Don’t put all the blame on the UGA player… if any body knew anything about this case at all you would know that the other boy committed far worse crimes! so please if you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t say anything!

The charge against Tripp is simple assault because of verbal abuse. There is no charge Tripp ever touched anyone. Let the courts handle it rather than the AJC or UGA or a lynch squad of posters, reporters, and anti-UGA people. He is innocent until proven guilty, or isn’t this America anymore?

This thug should be locked up and they should throw away the key! Vicious thugs like these usually come from a bad environment with rampant drug abuse and indulgence in gangsta rap as is so endemic in suburban communities across America. Is it such a surprise that Tripp is a thug given his friends are other Woodstock thugs? Hell, his family environment is hell and he probably doesn’t his father was probably never at home, since he had to work 80 hours a week to support his families affluent Woodstock lifestyle.
It is safe to say that I will never be venturing out to Lake Allatoona anymore now that it has been taken over by thugs driving daddy’s boat blaring loud rap music.

If these teens verbally abused folks who asked about the pocketknife, it could be argued that, due to the situation, a reasonable person would understand that to be consenting to assault. You can’t just stand out in public and verbally lash at people without expecting a consequence. The report said: “The men finally let him go but with a warning: “Keep your mouth shut, or else” - that is not a threat but a warning of how these teens can prevent provoking fights in the future.

Another day, another story in the AJC about a dog player getting busted for something. Maybe the AJC should have a seperate section in the paper like the Living section or Business section etc…. and call it the UGA Blotter. They could list all of the UGA murders and robberies and domestic violence crimes in this section and save the sports section for sports. Its just another typical story from a joke of a program who has not won anything significant in 27 years. And always remember to keep you windows rolled up when you drive through Athens or someone might throw a diploma in your car.

Buck, I think as soon as anyone knows more, the AJC will follow up. Like it or not, there is a rush to get out the scoop, even half a$$. I noticed they did update late last night. What is puzzling to me is that of all the 25 people involved, only these guys get implicated. And the investigation 2 months later cannot even confirm that a baseball bat by the other guy even existed? All the talk of “an individual” or “2 men”………….did the boy start a fight or not. It seems if you actually arrest somebody and give comments to the newspaper about it, you should be able to say……..the alledged victim claimed it was “blank” who did “blank”. I understand the need to use generic terms, but the trial has already started. Sounds to me like the sheriffs office was just under pressure to do something, so lets implicate the names we know. I am not defending Taylor, as you know I have been very vocal that the guys that got caught holding beers, knew the rules and should suffer the fate, same here. I just think this is awfully full of holes. Either tell the story or wait till its clear. I’d be very surprised if the whole thing wasn’t just dismissed.
I really could not care less if Caleb King had traffic voilation. I prabably break a traffic law every time I’m in Athens. I do wonder what the deal is with all the suspended DL is. Must be the new rules on legal ages now. Still , if he KNEW he had a suspended DL, choose to go drive, got caught, and the penalty is suspension, well, so be it.

I agree with the earlier post that called out Strickland for his opening sentence Another Georgia player is in trouble. No big surprise….this is unbelievable coming from the “beat writer.” Sounds like he should work for the Nat’l Enquirer, Star, or New York Post……too lazy to do real stories (unlike Chip who works his tail off) but instead just likes to stir the pot with negative articles and blog entries. Just listen to the moronic entries by rival fans (BA Bee for example) referring to all of the “sexual assaults and murders”..WHAT SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND MURDERS?….HOW DOES HAVING A FEW PLAYERS GETTING BUSTED FOR DRINKING BEER (90% OF COLLEGE STUDENTS DO THAT)AND A VERBAL ASSUALT (THIS CASE) MAKE OUR PLAYERS THUGS AND MURDERERS?…this sensationalism may seem innocent enough to Carter and the editors but is having a serious impact on the reputation of the University and its players. Let a real journalist like Chip Towers become the beat writer and we’ll have a return to fair, hardworking journalism. The beat writer shouldn’t be a pom pon waiver, just a journalist that reports fairly on all things uga football. Until that happens the AJC will have all of the integrity of your grocery line tabloid. Carter only prints real uga news after he reads it in the Macon Telegraph or copy/pastes it from a press release on georgiadogs.com… Shame on the ajc.

Sorry, I had to double dip. This just angers me so much. As journalists maybe you should get off your butts and go do a legitimate story on violence and sports. Instead you have trivialized a tragic event to take pot shots at a football coach. This is a really cheap shot and an example of the press falling way short of its responsibilities. I am an avid Georgia fan, yes, but I could care less about football when it comes to this. Making this a tech vs. uga banter is an insult to the victims of this crime and is incredible myopic in regard to the problems of violence in our society. I would really like to see AJC print a retraction of the Richt poll and an apology to the two boys who suffered this brutality.

thugs are thugs. doesn’t matter if you play football or any sport. Why do people always claim to be the stand up guy and try to “break up fights.” why didn’t he avert it in the first place. if you can’t keep your friends from fighting, what makes you think you can break up the fight once it is in full swing. UGA PLAYER TO GET DEATH PENALTY By Carter Strickland UGA Football player (enter any name you want) will soon be sentenced to death and damnation for spitting on the sidewalk in Athens at 1:00 am Monday. He had previously verbally assualted a parking meter and was seen running with scissors. Prior to this incident he had been ticketed for jaywalking
-Regarding the Caleb King incident.-
Get a life Carter (self indictment I should too seeing that I have read this junk) Come spend some time driving in Athens around the campus and I will bet you can witness no less than a 1/2 dozen traffic violations by students (particulary bike riders and moped riders) who totally ignore or feel they are immune to traffic laws because they aren’t in a car. As a matter of fact I almost ran over one moped today as they were utilizing the bike lanes to pass and the regular lanes to drive in.
Get off your behind and earn your paycheck and give us something of merit. Police blotter info is sooo blase’.

Once again, lets put verbal assault, drinking and driving the wrong way on a MOPED into proper perspective (compared to say felony drug arrests or discharging firearms). Check out the site that ranks the incidents according to severity - http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/?p=3615. Yes, UGA will go up, but Wisconsin joins the group with BATTERY and ROBBERY and Rutgers with DOMESTIC ABUSE. That’s fine for the fans to take shots. But instead of the “build a UGA wing on the jail” (how original), try making some valid arguments. Am I happy with arrests? No. Are we thugs? No. The truth lies in the middle.

Can’t really pin that on the campus police. If he did in fact go the wrong way on a motorized vehicle in front of them, they really have no choice but to stop him, if only for safety reasons, and I’m betting a valid DL and an “oh crap really, I’m new here would have been the end of it”. Didnt realize suspended DL was an arrest situation, but not sure of the law there. Can’t really blame officers for NOT following the strict laws, especially in todays world, where you would be skinned alive for preferential treatment. what kills me is that somebody, prabably everyone KNEW it was a moped before publishing the story, and elected to leave that lil piece out.

I am so tired that people keep looking to football players as the example of behavior for society. They are morons who get in with low SAT scores and grades. They could not get in if they did not play football. Parents need to teach kids that no matter how great they are as athletes, they are not necessarily role models unless they consistently act responsibly. In fact doctors and scientists are much better role models in terms of behavior. Also, why do people keep blaming Richt. It is the idiot adults fault. They are legal adults making their own decisions. It is not Richt’s responsibility to lock them in a room to prevent them from being arrested. Let’s get back to a little personal responsibility and stop treating these players like they are five year olds with a chaperone. They are men.

The blog headline “Does the punishment fit the crime?” is classic AJC reporting
Tell us Carter, what is the punishment here? The headline says there is punishment, but the details were left out. What is it? The readers depend on AJC for facts. And if there is punishment, that means there was a conviction. I didn’t catch what that conviction was for, but obviously it must have occured. After all, you said it was a crime and there was punishment.
Way to go, Carter! Hard hitting AJC investigative journalism at its finest has scooped every other publication.
All you bloggers who have been criticizing Carter need to get with the program and congratulate him and the AJC for such high journalistic standards.

By that time there will be no more eligable players left and the Clarke county jail will be over flowing with the thugs represting the dawg nation. JUST SUMS UP THE SORRY DAWG NATION!!!! It actually makes my day when I read something like this though. Maybe one day just maybe the Dawg nation will have just an ounce of class. I dont know if it will be in our lifetime though. You don’t get your license suspended for being a choir boy. When your license is suspended, you don’t drive—no ifs, no ands, no buts. That is not just a “traffic offense” like speeding. Other SEC schools like Auburn would suspend players in similar circumstances. UGA should hold their players to similarly high standards.

I love how a lot of the people who complain about the players getting arrested for underage drinking, did it themselves in college as do their own kids. The drinking age is a joke and everyone knows it. Eighteen year old men and women deserve the right to drink, they are adults and can be drafted to die for the country and be prosecuted as adults. These country is so puritan it is ridiculous. They probably making drinking more of a problem by trying to make it taboo instead of legalizing it for 18 year olds and teaching kids to responsbily drink in moderation. Typical of right wingers to try to bury their heads in the sand on these issues. They do the same with sex education and then there sons and daughters go banging each other without proper information.

Where did this beer come from that they were drinking? From the parents of a certain MTSU football player who was at the center of the fight. Why haven’t we heard about the MTSU player? Because his dad is a former volunteer Sheriff for Cherokee county. He “lawyered up” his kid before any of this broke and went and told the cops a false story. MTSU dad knew the fight was going on when it was going on because it was right beside his property and, again, he provided the alcohol for the minors. People from around here know who this MTSU player and his father are because if you’ve lived here long enough you’ve seen how they don’t play by the rules, and always get away with it because they are malicious snakes. Everyone should be held accountable for what happened that night, but let’s know just focus on the Red and Black…someone needs to look into the Blue and White!

Everyone involved should be held accountable. That includes the former volunteer sheriff’s deputy and his son, a linebacker for MTSU. MTSU Daddy “lawyered up” his son before any of this broke and went to the cops with a false story. MTSU Daddy also supplied the beer we keep hearing about. MTSU Daddy has a history of lying and stealing to protect his delinquent children. Everyone around our community knows this, but the Sheriff hasn’t gone after him and we want to know why!

Discipline — Richt its a word in the dictionary and fundamental to a good football program. Championship teams don’t give up 70-90+ penalties a year!!! They don’t have their atheletes getting arrested on a weekly basis!!! That’s all the head coach’s job!!! GASERS run them until they puke for each penalty they give up. Spread it out over multiple days if necessary.

Now we hear Caleb King is driving on a suspended license while driving the wrong way on a one way. I hear that over 90% of the recruits usually pass this portion of their UGA admission requirement. It may be that this part of the test was given after the extremely difficult High School Equivalency Exam and he was just tired.

Why do we care how football players act? I don’t hear the hypocrites in this room complaining when an average UGA student gets busted for underage drinking, which happens all the time. Don’t even publish the stupid story AJC, no one cares. The drinking age shouldn’t be 21, it should be 18. Make adults take responsibility for themselves if they drink and drive, or fight, or fall off a balcony. Face it they are adults and not babies like everyone tries to treat them. Pretty soon 30 year old men will be treated like babies and have a curfew and not be allowed to drink. Pretty sad right wing nanny state. Thanks a lot hypocrite right wing bible bangers.

I have been critical of UGA being the only football program in the country that suspends players from real games for minor infractions such as an open container of alcohol.
However, I ALWAYS say that if a crime such as the one that is alledged to have occurred, happens… the player should get the book thrown at them, no matter who it is.
It is time to walk the walk.
Suspend him from the team after Richt hears his side of the story… and Richt has a chance to talk to the authorities (BEFORE THE SEASON).
If Richt feels like he was involved in any way other than breaking up the fight or being a completely innocent bystander… he should be suspended indefinately from ANYTHING to do with the team.
No practice, no games, no nothing.
If we come to find that he participated in this after things shake out, he should be kicked off the team permanantly, no 2nd chances.
I know that it is easier to severely punish a walk on who may not have played much anyway (if at all?), but this should be the way things go for any player at UGA int he rare case that there is a real crime committed (not parking tickets and yelling at a bouncer)
If Taylor was involved, this is one that I am ashamed of as a DAWG fan!

After all of this investigation tripp was charge with a simple misdemeanor assualt and it was verbal assualt at that. May be there’s more but they couldn’t get enough proof to charge him with. I don’t know. I did notice that the other FB player named had a $28,000 bond placed on him and we don’t know what Trip’s bond was if any. After all the time and money put into this investigation the charge seems weak, very weak. Let’s let it play out.

Everybody needs to relax and calm down, at this point this is a non story. If you bother to read you will note he was alleged to have been involved, some witnesses say as an active participant others say as one who was trying to break it up. He was charged with “Simple Assault for verbal abuse” a misdemeanor if they could have charged him with a crime they would have. As Buck’s relative the Judge said they had nothing and charged him with this as a way of trying to get him to talk, either to confess to something or as a witness to what actually happened. At this point we don’t know what actually happened.

honestly it is horrible that the only thing everyone is worried about is UGA’s football program and how it makes them look. If anybody had any sense at all they would look pass the fact that they are college football players for major colleges and see that what they did was just plain wrong! If this was your son, brother, or friend that was jumped, humiliated, drug through the woods, and had the crap beat out of them would you just say oh boys will be boys it’s nothing but simple assault…. and just let the case go b/c one of the accused was a football player. Take some time to think about the REAL problem…. what they did wasn’t right and they should be punished for their crimes regardless of whether they are an average joe or play college football. Just think… what if this happened to you?

Its just sounds better to make it seem that way. Nobody is defending any of those actions, so save your lecture on right and wrong, most of us know the difference. In fact to a man, (and woman, and one suspected lesbian) every person in here said, IF, IF our boy beat up anyone, punish him to the fullest. But appearantly that wasn’t the case. i don’t think these kids understand that getting a free education and playing for a div.1 program is not a right. richt could make it a policy that if you are arrested, except for minor traffic violations, you are off the team. period. he doesn’t have to wait for proof that the person actually committed the crime.

This is not a problem unique to UGA, but it is painfully obvious that Richt runs a very loose program as it pertains to his players bad behavior. UGA has a long and proud history, and as fans you would want to be proud of the players that represent your team regardless of wins and losses. Richt gives token suspensions, one game usually against a weak opponent.
I really believe the dogs would win just as many games and perhaps more if Richt would actually show some strength and kick some of the trouble makers off the team. There is a ton of talent on the team, and you should play only those who represent the program well. Until he does this, UGA will continue to be embarassed by the thugs that wear the uniform.

No surprises here with a football program in a death spiral, players running amuck, and the NCAA sniffing around looking for violations.
Stick around, UGA will most likely be hit with some NCAA violations in the near future, then all the UGA Mullet Boys will be crying foul and be saying “wait until the next 5 years.”
This entire program is an embarassment to the state of Georgia and only galvanizes the fact that UGA football is no more than Single-A (Instructional Leagure) for the NFL. Players have no desire to get an education at UGA, just get some exposure then jump to the NFL draft.
Caleb King is a prime example of the low academic rigor of this college, and the recent article by the AJC in terms of graduation rates galvanized this fact.
Keep recruiting the Caleb Kings of the world, we really enjoy the entertainment.

My God. Caleb King riding a moped on a suspeneded license. He should be caned in public. This is all a big bunch of BS. Oh, the programs in a death spiral. The program is fine. You have one guy with a moped infraction. And, one guy who if found guilty deserves jail time for a non-campus, non-program related tradgedy. I think the Falcons coach obviously does not have a good handle on the discipline of his team. It is just as rediculous as what you are suggesting here.

Op, if these teens verbally abused folks who asked about the pocketknife, it could be argued that, due to the situation, a reasonable person would understand that to be consenting to assault. You can’t just stand out in public and verbally lash at people without expecting a consequence. The report said: “The men finally let him go but with a warning: “Keep your mouth shut, or else” - that is not a threat but a warning of how these teens can prevent provoking fights in the future. There should be no punishment whatsoever.

Hater, Guess I don’t understand your question? I am very objective when it comes to this stuff. If you mean do I think that our players should go unpunished for crimes? Heck no. They should suffer the consequences of their actions regardless of their status on the team. If Tripp participated and threw a punch in that brawl he should be gone from the team. If he didn’t participate and was trying to break it up or just yelled some words at those kids then no he shouldn’t be punished. A $675.00 bond doesn’t indicate violence on his part. The $28K bond for the other kid does. If it were Stafford involved in something like that and proven that he participated in a violent manner then should be gone from the team. Moreno can’t drive a moped, should he be gone from the team? No. I don’t think driving infractions except the most serious such as DUI, wreckless driving causing injury etc. Did I hate it when Hebron got suspended, yes. Did I agree with his punishment sure did. I am all for accountability. Do I hate it when somebody like Carter writes “No Big Suprise” when one of our players gets accused of soemthing and his name is in the paper? Sure do. Mentioning “Punishment fitting the crime” when A) no charges had been filed B) no trial held C)no jury verdict or admission of guilt. I think that is just plain irresponsible. So I think you got me confused with somebody else. But for the record I don’t know here you get ouor program going from average to worst from? Envy? Jealous? Our worst year was last year and we still won 9 games? So considering your avg to worst comment I will take the rest of your verbage with a grain of salt.

One thing all you bozo bloggers need to remember is one little NCAA Rule and I know Tech doesn’t pay attention the NCAA Rules: see 19 athletes ruled inelligable, but anyway… Coach Richt as is with all head coaches is barred from any and all contact with players during this period of the summer that falls between spring and fall camps. There are point men in the coaching staff who are allowed contact, but not the head man. To really put things into perspective we should all realize that Carter is doing what he needs to do to have a very successful blog. I have been a Dawg fan forever and Carter is, in the words of Bush and Cheney, an A* , Big Time, for using some of the stuff he has which, to be honest, will end up causing some basically innocent young people a bunch of stress wrong accusations just like the Dke LaCrosse team. However, if I was in Carter’s shoes, and he obviously doesn’t like the Dawgs, I probably would use the tactics to get my blog going bigtime. Who knows, maybe Carter can be held accountable in a court of law just like Mike Nifong. Unless more comes of this than it appears on the surface, Carter may end up in a lawsuit. If he posts this he has really big bs.

Taylors charge is misdemeanor assault. That means he is accused of using words. But he is not accused of ever touching anybody. It hasn’t been reported what he said, but it is clear the only thing he did was use words or they would have charged him with more.
So a player should be disciplined for using rough language? Please. Next thing you know the coaches will be accused of assault. There won’t be a college football coach left in this country and who knows what would have happened to the drill instructors I had in the Marine Corps.
A 7 week delay in bringing charges means conviction for even a misdemeanor is unlikely. If the prosecuters had a clear case for misdemeanor verbal assault they would have made it earlier.

high school kids making fun of others?
I guess making fun of his lisp, and wrongly accusing him of beating somebody, even mentioning a punishment that hasnt even happened, will teach him.
Was he so bad that he used to log on to an internet sight read by hundreds of local people, friends, and family and and trash people by thier name? At least his rudeness was in person with possible concequences, not anonomous. If as you say his behavior was a maske for his own insecurities, that not near as bad as purposely doing so out of spite.

I still don’t understand how Caleb King has a suspended license. The guy just got out of high school.
UGA needs to punish these kids & let them know that they can’t get away with everything. UGA will be like FSU if they don’t start punishing these kids.

King was arrested for going down a street the wrong way on a moped? The UGA cops have a lot of time on their hands don’t they? I hope they never have to really deal with a serious crime like a panty raid.

wil, do you really beleive a suspended DL is any business of Coach Richt? Particularly before he was even a UGA student?
In Georgia, kids get suspended DL for anthing from driving too late, too many people in the car, or not taking a drivers class on time. Plus any traffic ticket of as much as 2 points would do it in the early stages. I had about 3 of them before 20, how about you?
BTW, I’m betting you would be hard pressed to even name any problems at FSU, and certainly in comparison to anyone else. Lets stick to factual opinion, not cliche’ old, has been, jokes.

Just real quick:
Griffin not only failed to meet all of the probation conditions, but he was arrested for driving with a suspended license in March, adding to his legal troubles.
“…court records show Paul Griffin was placed on probation for six months, ordered to serve 75 hours of community service, attend a victim awareness class and enroll in a DUI class. Griffin not only failed to meet all of the probation conditions, but he was arrested for driving with a suspended license in March, adding to his legal troubles. Griffin, who was booked at the Leon County Jail and released Wednesday afternoon, was back on FSU’s campus Thursday participating in offseason drills.”

I still can’t understand how King was pulled over on Sanford Drive for going the wrong way. Sanford Drive is a two way street! For those who don’t know its the street that runs over the bridge onlooking the stadium.
Picture this Caleb King is leaving the SLC after finishing up some class work. He hops on his moped and takes a right (heading south toward the dorms)on Sanford Dr. Since it is close to 10:30 and there is no traffic to speak of a he merges into the oncoming lane to take a better look at the field. He cuts the engine and looks out onto the stadium. It is quiet and peacefull. King closes his eyes and lets his imagination untwine, he sees himself being applauded by the 90,000 UGA faithfull after scoring the opening TD in heated rivalry game. He smiles opens his eyes and cranks up the moped.
Carter Strickland can finish up this story.

We all should just stop for a second and think about WHY this stuff is in the media so much. It’s the internet!! - Everyone can be a newscaster/beatwriter as long as they have a laptop. This kind of stuff has happened forever especially the drinking offenses. Drinking and college go hand in hand to the degree it’s almost a cliche now. When it comes to property crimes or assaults as well as grades or illegal money, then we have to look further. All I’m trying to say is that although it isn’t a good thing to do,they are still young men and some of these mistakes are to expected. I’m not letting anyone off the hook here. you mess up ,you pay period. I went to college and know about how athletes beat up everyone at a party-BAD , but I also heard of athletes getting challenged to fights all because he’s getting too much attention. There’s a lot of player haters-literally! out there. Just realize we do not have all the facts and even when we do they too are often partially wrong. GO DAWGS

NEWS FLASH>>>>>>>>>THIS JUST IN>>>>>>
Associated Press-July 18, 2:09pm- New developments in the Michael Vick dog fighting episode suggest recent findings of a new defendant. It seems that Carter Strickland, aka “Dumbass”, aka “AssClown”, (minimum wage beat writer for the ajc) has been linked to the illegal events. Strickland was caught at Vick’s property in or on early 2007 bodyslamming hamsters and poking grasshoppers with curling irons. The district attorney also states that Strickland has been printing “careless” and “potentially harmful” heresay about state university athletes. The punishment for this crime, if convicted, will be no less than a naked spanking with a wet towel, administered by Dennis Rodman and Gary Coleman.
Stay tuned……and I agree: FIRE MIKE ADAMS!

dale, I’m certainly not any big fan of FSU, (but admire nevertheless), My point is that bringing up Bowden and FSU anytime a football players ends up in the news is pretty cliche’. I dont doubt you can scour the internet and find some cliping from a DUI case from there. But if I tried I could find one from about every school, every conference. And you are absolutely sure that you know every last detail about the Griffin deal , and how Coach Bowden may or may not have handled that internally? How about comparing the history of players under Bowden with paterno, spurrier, others, heck even Paul “bear” Bryant (if they actualy reported such things in his day).
And even IF you consider FSU to be the standard for behavior issue, comparing a traffic ticket and a “yelling” accusation to that is far from accurate. (I know you didnt, wil did, thats why I directed that statment to him, ala, he didnt know what he was talking about)

Come on mutts, FSU won championships, you guys DON’T. Wow 2 SEC championships in the last 30 years, whoopee. Sure you coach is responsible for all the thugs at each school, but at least Bowden could compete or win some REAL championships with them. Stop the comparisons NOW!
Yes you are the new FSU because of all the punks that Richt recruits and covers up for, not because of any championships. Funny, since he’s been gone, you don’t hear much about their football players getting arrested anymore.

I’VE WAITED TO SEE IF THIS THOUGHT HAD PASSED THROUGH ANUONE’S MIND AND SINCE NO COMMENT HAS BEEN MADE, I’LL MAKE. THIS IS A SMALL DEAL BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT THE WRITER DOESN’T WRITE THE HEADLINES; HOWEVER, THAT DOESN’T STOP THE ASST. EDITOR OR CARTER FROM SAYING THE”UGA PLAYER CHARGED WITH MISDEMEANOR VERBAL ASSAULT CHARGE”. NOT ONCE IN THE HEADLINE NOR IN CARTER’S COLUMN IS THE TRUE CHARGE MENTIONED, NOT ONCE. ANYBODY ELSE NOTICE?

JUST GOT THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION DIRECTLY FROM THE AJC SPORTS DEPT. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE SPACE TO PUT THE ABREVIATED FORM OF ASUALT OR TO PUT THE WORD “VERBAL” IN THE HEADLINE. CLAIMED THAT CARTER PUT THAT INFO IN THIS COLUMN UNTIL I READ IT TO HIM AND THEN HE SAID THAT THE CORRECT WORDS WERE IN THE ORIGINAL COLUMN. THIS ISN’T A RUMOR, I CALLED THEM FROM WAY OUT HERE BECAUSE THOSE OLD REPORTER INSTINCTS CAME ROARING BACK. WEAK, AND I DO MEAN WEAK ANSWER IMO.

On this lake brawl thing rumor also has it that the fight was broken up by a couple a Tech students and their light sabers. And that Darth Vader himself was there running smack against the force. How real looking do those light sabers get Ramble ON!? And is it true that you always name your campsites “Death Star” when you check in?

Ramble man, do you ever even check stuff out before you post. Correcting your factually incorrect statement does get so old. How many “real championship(S)” did FSU win with Bowden? Would that exactly one? and took say 20 something years to achieve. Come on small fry, don’t be “that guy”. Your best shot is that Richt hasnt won a BCS NC in his first few years of being a head coach. thats soooo lame. yawn.
I assume that you don’t consider those AnotherCrappyConference titles are any big deal.

You’re right Buck. Check this out, last night AJC had a poll done on M. Vick. They asked the question should he be fired. Then made a big deal out of how many white people said he should be fired versus black people. That is what the AJC Sports Dept. is all about; stirring up trouble. Anyone with half a brain knows that the Vick issue has nothing to do with race, the majority of the team is black and no one has a problem with that. But the AJC sees a man with integrity/character issues and stirs up the City with race baiting. Why? Because that is much easier to do to sell papers than working a story based on good journalsim practices. Don’t you know it broke their heart to find out that everyone in the Woodstock lake fight case were all white boys?

RambleON, you are the classic hater. Nothing to boast about with GT so you compile a composite of the other 116 teams’ accomplishments to compare with Georgia. Now you’re thumping FSU’s chest. You are obsessed with Georgia football. Obsessed!

I always knew you Atlanta fellows were racist pigs.
You know, what that poll doesn’t cover is the fact Vick is employed, not going to college, not on scholarship. he has a contract to work for somebody and it can be broken for far less than due process. Business doesnt have to recognize anything but its own interest. Its not really up to us white guys or black guys, its up to Mr. Owner. Many NFL guys have been fired for far less than this.

You mention Georgia has 2 SEC titles in 30 years, that would actually be 5 SEC titles in 30 years. Compared to Georgia Tech’s 2 conference titles in 50 years. (yes, we know GT was independent for 13 years)(but we also know GT’s 1998 title was crock because you tied for the title with a team that beat you in the regular season).

As a long-time dawg, I am getting sick of our players always in trouble. Can’t Richt control them?
Richt must begin a 1 strike and your out policy. The players obviously have no respect for him or the law. Some of us want to keep the blame off of Richt, but bottom line is that he and our players represent us. The players are getting a scholarship to UGA, not to drive under the influence or get into fights or anything else.
If a player gets into ANY trouble, kick them off of the team - plain and simple. Once Richt does this one time, the players will realize he is serious and will stop all of this crap.
If Richt doesn’t get control, I want him out!

Do any of you know what verbal abuse is?I expect that out of others but you so-called dawg fans make me want to throw up.You fools disgust me to no end.

BuddyEl, my guess is that the majority of that is prabably some tech guy, or just somebody who thinks its cute to stir it up, believing he has found some loophole in the blogasphere, by pretending to be a legit UGA fan, therefore adding credance to his “opinion”. The givaway is that while they try to watch the tone, they still basically mimic the old standards we here from the haters. same ol deal.
Any true UGA fan , not in a glass bubble, has either met Coach Richt, or at least followed him enough to know we simply arent going to get a man more dedicated to character from his players. These calls to be infinetly more strict than any program in the nation are just rambling with no consequences in a sport blog. I also suspect few of these comment would actually apply if it were thier own kids.
And of cource there are a few folks out there that actually do live one knee jerk reaction to the next. Personally I am not so thin skined that I am so terribly embarrassed because an 18 yr old football player at a college that I attended 25 yrs ago, took a wrong turn on his scooter. Or somebody was holding a beer. (people doing stupid things are not a phenomena in college students) Or even that my beloved UGA football program gets black eyes in the media every time a teenage does something wrong. Would be great to have nobody cussing, drinking, fighting, or speeding, but its just not realistic. Just not how the real world is. Not in a football program with 85 pumped up boys in it. Or the average households for that matter. If its a severe incident, I feel confident, the school will act accordingly.
I am absolutely convinced that not much has changed trying to keep a team of footabll player’s noses clean, over the past 30 yrs, (name any coach), other than the boys are better behaved now, because of the attention.

Mr. Strickland,
Several people in this blog have questioned your integrity and the integrity of your paper based on trying and convicting a person before the courts have and trivializing an awlful event by making a a petty rivalry issue.
Please, have the balls to respond to the criticism or we will all understand that ajc is only interested in how many clicks you get on your site regardless of the validity or integrity of what you write.
