UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Which freshmen will stand out?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There is little question some redshirt freshmen and freshmen will get time on defense this year. Knowing that, there are a couple of guys who I am the most curious to see.
In the secondary Reshad Jones and Quintin Banks should pique the interest of just about everybody. Banks could become the best in Georgia’s long line of big hitters at the safety position. He may not be as big as some of the other heavy hitters. But he has lit up some people in scrimmages throughout his redshirt year and has shown that knack for finding the ball and serious slowing speed.
Jones is intriguing because of his versatility and athleticism. Mark Richt has talked about the possibility of playing him at corner as well as safety. At either position Jones should be able to create turnovers due to his rangy body and speed. It will be hard for Georgia to keep him off the field.
Linebacker Brandon Miller was talking the other day and he said he thinks either Charles White or Rennie Curran will see some time as a true freshman. If I had to bet on somebody, I would say it is Curran just because he is physically ready. But White is a very intelligent player and since he is coming from a military background he knows about discipline and how to stay on assignments.
At the line I know Geno Atkins is a sophomore but it will be interesting to see if he holds off Kade Weston all year. Atkins is not as physically imposing as Weston but he has a better motor at this point and that is why he is listed as a starter going into the fall.

Jones will definetly make an impact this year. I also think Curran will play early. If we get ahead in the OSU game, expect him to play then in mop-up duty. Then, expect him to come in of the 2nd or 3rd series in the SC game.

10 Questions for the Day:
Will Caleb redshirt?
Who will have more yards: Moreno or Stafford-to-Massaquoi?
Black jerseys in one game this year: truth or fiction?
NaDerris Ward: healthy or not-so-much?
Will Bobo be willing to use the run game like Arkansas does (or Vince Dooley would)?
Trick plays: not enough or just the right amount?
Georgia Tech: creepy or amusingly dorky?
Why didn’t someone hire Cutcliffe as a coach (well, besides his prior head caoching experience)?
Where does UGA have the least depth this year?
Does the week off before Florida really help?

Hey Dicknutz,
UGA should NEVER wear black jerseys. UGA wears red jerseys and silver britches, so STFU!
We are not S. Carolina or Clemson. We don’t come out wearing a new colored jersey to hype a big game. We don’t need changes in appearance or gimmicks to show that we are playing a big game.
We looked like chumps when we came out in black pants against UF in 98 and got slammed.
Thank god Richt has embraced the UGA traditions and kept the current uniform.
Let South Carolina and Clemson change their jerseys to get themselves fired up for the game.
At UGA we wear RED JERSEYS AND WHITE ON THE ROAD; WE ALWAYS WEAR SILVER BRITCHES AND RED HELMETS.
And we should always play every game as if it is a big game; always be fired up on the inside (heart and head) and not worry about looking good on the outside.

Okay, how about Red pants and white jersey - a flashback to the Hershel days! I’d also go for black jersey and silver pants. I don’t think doing this for one game is a big deal. In fact I think it would be fun for the fans and players. I’m all for tradition, but sometimes you got to add some hot sauce to make the Bloody Mary zing!

I forgot about the 98 FL vs GA game. BTW we wore all white several times and all red as well. We have done very well in the all white having won the 1967 Cotton Bowl against SMU. I really hope we don’t come out in black jerseys. In fact, I might throw up. Red helmets, shirts, and silver britches- can’t get much better than that. Even Spurrier said so. Teams with great tradition and history- Bama, S. Cal, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame- don’t fool with their jerseys. Its what distingishes us from the Oregons and South Carolinas of college football.

Oh, with regards to the actual topic of the discussion, I don’t think Moreno is going to be a big factor. I bet we’ll see him in mop up situations, but with Lumpkin as the starter and Brown’s rehab coming so well, I just don’t think we’ll see him in a big time situation. Jones though I think will be a factor, considering how highly we recruited him and what he’s done in practice. With our depth thin in the defensive backfield, he could definitely see some major playing time.
Just 50 days left- I can’t wait! GO DAWGS!

I don’t see any reason not to do something different. I’m not there but are the black jerseys sold on campus? I don’t think it’s tearing up tradition at all to go a game with say Sliver britches, Black jersey and traditional Red helmet and yes HW. did wear Red pants. ND changes colors from Green to Blue and Black IS a part of the color code for Ga. Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t our official colors Red and Black?

Ft. Worth Dawg, don’t remember all of your questions but here’s a stab. 1. C King will not RS in ‘07 2. toss up because Moreno can catch the ball 3. Black jerseys fiction but I wish it were true 4. Only playing time will tell about Wards shoulder. 5. No Bobo won’t walk away from his best weapon, Stafford at QB. Those other coaches didn’t have that talent at QB. 6. Cutcliffe had very close ties to the Vols, much like Amato going back to FSU after he was fired at N.C.State 7. Running Back: we don’t know how Browns knee will hold up yet or will he have it together between the ears. AS CMR says, that’s the hardest part. We have Lumpkin and Moreno for sure and King for special situations. One injury and we could be in trouble. 8. yes, the week off comes at a good time. it’s about half way( haven’t checked to be sure) and will give everybody a break to get ready for the Reptiles and the rest of the season including AU at home. 9. Trick plays- I saw someplace where the term “cutting edge” would be the type of play calling we would get from Bobo. I think we saw the in the 2nd half of the “CFB”. Misdirection, cutting edge or trick plays, whatever term you use we’ll see a different type of “O” from Bobo and the Dawgs in ‘07. 10. “Bugs”? not worth talking about now.

I do not think Dooley’s teams ever wore black jerseys, in fact I do not think black jerseys have been worn since the 40s. I think a one game change would be great, how about a throwback uniform with red jerseys and silver britches and silver helmets like Wally’s boys just for one game.

Georgia wore Red jerseys and white pants for a bowl game in the late 90s. Can’t really remember which one. Either way, terrible idea!! Those stunts left with Donnan’s stupid a$$. Stick with traditional uniforms. You can’t go wrong. I did enjoy the blacked-out statdium for the Tenn. game last year. We should do that again at some point.

And by the way, under Dooley prior to 1980, Georgia wore red pants and white jerseys away, and red jerseys and white pants at home. The silver britches were brought out of retirement for HOME games for the 1980 season. The success of that season prompted them to wear the silver britches for every game after that.

1997 Outback Bowl vs. Wisconsin UGA wore black pants with the white jersey after players went to donnan with the request to change it up. It was approved by Dooley and Bobo went 22-25 for over 300 yards and a win in his final college game.

When we discuss the backfield don’t forget about Brannon Southerland, I look for him to have a great year too. We have all these flashy guys, but i still love a good workhorse. Absolutely awesome backfield potential. I don’t agree with Buck about how an injury could hurt us so bad at running back. Brown will be ready mentally, already back physically. The young guys are chomping at the bit to get carries, Moreno will be ready… I question King’s readiness a little, simply because he hasn’t had enough time with the playbook or practice time with the offense. Lumpy is set to take off from the get-go. To me its debatable that Stafford is the “best weapon” at this point, with that stable of running backs behind him. He may be, but with a little blocking we could put up huge numbers on the ground. One thing’s for sure, the pressure to have a great passing game will be alleviated some and that can only help. Take the pressure off of Matt and the receivers and they will only be that much better, and if the wide outs still suffer from dropsey-itis those four scat backs could have a load of fun catching passes out of the backfield.
On defense I’ll mention someone that no one talks about… Brandon Woods. Incredible speed and heart for a big guy. Probably gonna blossom more next year, but I hope he does well when he comes in to spell the other guys. I think he will end up being a solid plugger in the tackle position with the ability to put some pressure on the q.b. Wouldn’t it be great to have three D. Linemen that can quickly and forcefully get to the Q.B.? Add a linebacker stunt every now and then and Teebow needs to take out some life insurance. Woods was a defensive end that they moved to the tackle spot. In High School he was a good fullback too. He also has an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time like he has some kind of radar. The thing is, he does much better in the games than practice… must be an adreniline thang.

FT WORTH,

I personally hate this type of offense. It seems more gimmicky than anything else to me. I would rather line up and run our prostyle offense and. Now my only complaint is that we don’twanna put the ball in Lumpkins hands 20 times a game.

Hunk ERdown, I say running back only because he’s looking good now but we really don’t or won’t know if Brown is ready to p-lay until he put the pads on and things get real.As CMR says it’s now all between the ears so we’ll see. C. King won’t be ready to be an every down type of back but with his speed and if he catches as I’ve read, Bobo will have him on the field in certain situations. So until we know for sure about Brown we have two ready to go RBs in Lumpkin and Moreno who still has a lot to learn). I for sure haven’t forgotten about Southerland. How could anyone do that and with the TE. situation the way it is, I’m not going to be a bit surprised if we don’t see him lined up in that position. I thought that in the 2nd half of the “CFB” we had a nice mix of run and pass and I think we’ll see that this fall. As we started to see the last 3 games, Stafford has way to much talent to just hand the ball off with the occasional pass thrown in. You’re absolutely right about our WR catching the ball. Don’t be surprised to see true freshman Alon white from Mizzou playing WR and catching the ball. At least as of now his body hasn’t grown into a TE. It may and he’s growing but not yet..CMR and Bobo like 4-5 receiver sets so I’m looking for about a 50/50 pass run split with the run or the pass taking the load depending on the game situation.

Buck-
It is exciting to know that we have the talent to go out and dominate either way (passing or running). I have a feeling that there will be some games when ball control will become crucial, and there will be the flipside when we need to score quickly several times. Hopefully we won’t be in too many catch up situations, but if we are we have the tools to do it.

B. Wood baby! He will be a Warren Sapp type player for the dawgs. His talent is undeniable. He will garner freshmen AA honors this year even with Owens, Atkins, and Weston all playing.
K. Tripp is huge. I expect him to have a great camp and challenge for a spot opposite of where J. Wynn wins the other.
Don’t get to geared up for lots of freshmen play the 1st game. CMR loves to rely on senior leadership and seasoned players. With Ok.St. in Athens we will see little freshmen play.
If Trinton keeps the tackle spot I sure hope he gains about 15 to 20 pounds. No coach in the sec wants to start a freshmen tackle unless it’s Andre Smith at Bama.

Conyers,
Trinton won’t be the starter come opening day but look for him to get a lot of PT along with Chris Davis and Tanner Strickland. As it stands right now the starters at Tackle are Josh Davis and Vince Vance, Guards are Havercamp and Adams with Velasco at Center. Also look for Anderson and Perez to get PT as well. On defense look for Owens and either Atkins, Weston, Irvin, Lemon and Woods getting lots of PT. AT DE look for Wynn and Howard as starters with Tripp, Battle and Dobbs getting lots of PT. As for the RB position we have Lumpkin, Moreno, Johnson, Brown and King. Look for Moreno to be the starter by the end of the year and look for King to be utilized in certain situations. Brown is still a big question mark. GO Dawgs

Georgia brief uniform history.
When Dooley became the head coach, the Georgia uniform was red jerseys for home, white jerseys for the road, and the team always wore white pants.
In 1978 and 1979, Georgia did wear red pants for road games.
In 1980, Georgia wore red pants for the Tennessee game, then wore the silver britches in every game for the next few seasons.
In 1985, Georgia came out in red pants again for the road games.
In 1987, Georgia wore the red pants at Clemson.
In 1988, Georgia wore red pants at Mississippi State and South Carolina. After losing badly at South Carolina, the Dawgs never wore the red pants again.
Georgia has only worn black pants twice, against Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl, and against Florida.
In 1999, Donnan brought back the white pants for “special” occasions. They wore them against LSU as a tribute to Pat Watson, who died suddenly seven days earlier, and at Tennessee. The only other the team wore those white pants was against Georgia Tech in 2000.

Fr: Reshad Jones, Trinton Sturdivant, Rennie Curran, Chris Davis and Akeem Dent.
The name to remember is DT Tripp Taylor, 6-1, 265… aka “WHAM back”. I compare him to Pollack’s motor… a “hardnose football player”. Hustles, low to the ground and has a knack of penetrating into the backfield.
Also, the mighty quick Brandon Wood-Fr. 6-1, 275 … ran a 4.6 forty for the NFL scouts in the spring. Strong as an ox. Moved from DE to DT. Has a football motor too. If we let this kid shoots the cap, o-line has no chance.
Depth on DT looks real good.
Starters: Jeff Owen, Kade Weston… Geno might beat him out.
Rotation: Geno Atkin, Corvey Irvin, Tripp Taylor, Brandon Wood and Ricardo Crawford.

Gen Neyland, we could used a souvenir shop that sold chunks of sod from the stadium. Gen., Don’t mark down the “Party” as a Reptile “W” yet. All the howling doesn’t matter, some people are starting to pick the Dawgs to win the East. Go to rivals.com this morning and just like everything I’ve read so far the #1 key is? Matthew Stafford continuing to develop. Rivals also correctly said that our “D” would have to come together. Going into the “Party” remember two things. 1. who was the only QB to beat the Reptiles during the 90’s? 2. Did the light come on with Stafford in the last 3 games of ‘06? Keep your pencil close by but don’t mark the spot just yet. They have the Dawgs listed at 14th in the preseason which I think is about right.

Gen Neyland, Buck and Cuz
Our respective teams seem to have an identity crisis of sorts as to where home field is over the past 5 years or so. uncalled for. In my latest vision, I see UT beating UF. UGA beating UT and UF beating UGA… General I have to agree with you about the identity crisis of late between the Dawgs and Vols and I agree with you on UT beating FL and us beating UT, but like Buck said I have to respectfully disagree with you and I believe we will beat the Gators this year.

With the departure of JaMarcus Russell to the NFL, I was wondering your opinion on this year’s top SEC QB. As an LSU fan, I can clearly say that Andre Woodson is the top returning QB in the SEC. If he can do what he did last year at Kentucky, which is maybe the 9th or 10th most talented team in the SEC, how can he not be considered the best returning SEC QB? Put him on a team like Florida or LSU and he’s a Heisman frontrunner. Your thoughts? – Alex
A: I’ve asked around on this, and it’s hard to come up with a better time for SEC quarterbacks than now. Woodson certainly is a major-league talent, at least the pro scouts think so, while Georgia’s Matthew Stafford, Florida’s Tim Tebow, and Tennessee’s Erik Ainge are all high-level pro prospects. Throw in veterans like Auburn’s Brandon Cox and South Carolina’s Blake Mitchell, rising stars in Alabama’s John Parker Wilson and Vanderbilt’s Chris Nickson, and a tremendous prospect in LSU’s Ryan Perrilloux backing up Matt Flynn, there’s a slew of excellent talent. Woodson has the perfect convergence of being able to bomb away with great skill players around him, while playing along with a defense that can’t stop anyone and forces shootouts. Yeah, he’s the best returning SEC quarterback,… but very soon Stafford will change all that.
It will soon be this season brah.

The Freshman that will stand out will be the one who does get his failing grades in underwater basket weaving changed, is acquitted of rape, the Athens police lose the evidence in his conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine charges, 2 underage DUI’s removed from his record by an Athens attorney on the UGA athletic payroll, breaking an entry charges dropped by a co-ed pressured by Alumni; BUT hey he runs a 4.4!

The vision is that the big three in the East may beat each other’s brains out and split into a 3-way. Is that my call..? Nope. BUT IT COULD HAPPEN…Just having fun on a Sunday in Dawson County GA, USA. In my humble truthful opinion at this juncture, I wouldn’t be surprised if UT finished 2007 with a Dawg-like SEC East record of 2006…Way toooo early to get serious, but Tebow is a Floridian and IF he is under center when the UF-UGA spell is broken, it’ll be a hoot to watch what happens in the BOG from atop Rocky…

Best uniforms in College Football. Don’t break it if it ain’t broke. We wore red pants for the 1980 opener at Tennessee. Dooley surprised everyone by having Silver Britches for the first time since 1963 for the Texas A&M home opener the week following the UT game and with a couple of exceptions mentioned above we have stuck with silver britches.
Georgia always wore silver britches and silver helmets in the 50s and early 60s. When Dooley took over a losing program after the 63 season, he wanted to instill a winning attitude and part of this was to pick up the Green Bay style G on the red headgear. Georgia AD Joe Eaves cleared it with the Packers so there would be no trademark issues and thus we have our current helmet. This uniform is classic and we don’t need special jerseys or pants to get up for a big game.

hey buck, hope everything is going well for you. Haven’t posted in a while, i agree with you on the 50/50 pass and running game. Lots of weapons, went to the spring game and several players really stood out as being big time, Moreno is the real deal, so is Reshad Jones, biggest thing this year i think is having our kicker healthy, we lost 2 games last year that he could have made a difference in. Hard to tell about our young defence, i look for Brandon Miller to have a big year being moved to MLB, in my opinion we have the most tallented team in the SEC, maybe after giving up his play calling to Bobo, CMR will have more time to get this young team ready to play every saturday.

It’s been a great start on recruiting.Looking forward though you have to go down to the 14th best (by scout’s ratings) player left on UGA’s prospect list to find one with UGA as the clear leader.Starting with Matt Patchen the OL from S FLA,who we at best are in a 6 way tie for. Then Brice Butler who seems to favor ND.Tyler Love(OL) will probably stay in Ala.Antoine Mclain (OL) seems to favor LSU. Ebele Okakpu (OL)is said to favor UNC.Josh Jarbow (wr) from the ATL area may have Oklahoma at the top of his list. The #14 rated guy Zebrie Sanders (OL) from Mich who’s mother is a UGA grad is said to have UGA at the top but he is planing a visit to in-state Mich. This would follow the pattern of the last two years, where we get a fast jump and then fail to close strong.

Ft Worth, Excellent hijack of this blog my friend. As for the uniforms keep em the same. We made one list as top ten best uniforms. We don’t want to end up like Oregon for God’s sake. As for Cutcliffe I believe Archie Manning ran out of children to coach so Cutcliffe will have to wait on Cooper’s first son reaches college to get a HC job again.

You made some very good points A-Ville. i was thinking the same thing. We have to land Butler,Jarboe and Okakpu for this class to truly be a great one..heck we need to change some minds too,but that will be done this year on the field. Winning games is the best recruiting tool.

I don’t think the freshman class will be a serious contributor this year, except maybe a surprise from Jones and Curran. (We already know Moreno will get his carries.) I’m more excited about the sophomores. The secondary will have a little more experience and I’m excited to see Kris Durham play more. I don’t know why more people don’t talk about him. I saw him play in high school, and he was great, he started last year in the first game as a true freshman, had a productive first year, and he absolutely killed the defense in the spring game. Not to mention he’s 6’5” and runs a 4.45.

SauteeDawg, been a while , welcome back………A-ville Ranger I’m afraid that some trouble waters are straight ahead. We are having problems with a couple of commits and one is a BC. Okakpu is a maybe. Jarboe we aren’t #1 with and Brice Butler, IMO, based on what I’ve read won’t come to Athens. Please understand that it’s only my opinion but I base it on all of the info I can pick up…….Just what we need, another Dawg in trouble! This incident didn’t involve the school and w2as off campus but crimminal charges have been filed. I don’t see how CMR could have done anything about this one. A walk on who earns a scholarship and now this! Who knows?

Yes, Buck is correct on his assesments. Right now, Jarboe is open but Georgia isn’t exactly near the top right now. If we are talking about Butler, it is either FSU or USC(the real one) unless he is totally just fooling everyone. We have a good shot with Okakpu because he had been waiting on us to offer and he loves UGA. Miami and North Carolina are our top competition for him. If you guys are worried about getting one more WR, we are in the lead for 4 star wideout Joe Adams out of Arkansas. The kids film is ridiculous. He is great in the open field. We have to hold off USC(again the real one) and Arkansas for him. Overall recruiting is going great. And oh yeah about the topic, Sturdivant will start. Curran, Jones, Banks, and Duke Ward(by default) will all play and be factors. Go Dawgs

Great! Another player in trouble and a defensive player at that. Not what we need going into this season. How many is that now? Are we coming coming apart on discipline or what? I have had it with the reputation we are getting. WE are starting to look just like Florida State. If this is what Richt had in mind, I say better off without him even if he has won some games. A lot of you guys look at a winning program as defining our program. Not me. I would rather win with respectable, hard nose players. Remember Pollack? We need more like him, not these guys who attack 16 year olds in the woods and pee on them. Give me a break!

I’m amused that Dawg posters will post simply “TICKLE PILE” on the GT blogs, and then I jump over here to find a fashion debate. Maybe you all should go with the alternate jerseys. You know, with the White and Black stripes and the Clarke County Jail logo on the back. Or maybe the alternate-alternate jerseys. The orange jumpsuits with the black spray paint stenciling.
Ah, decisions..decisions.

Good to see Gen Neyland and Cuz back from the injured reserve list. Stay well!
I agree with Gen Neyland that I think UT will beat UF this year.
We don’t know which Freshmen and Redshirt Freshmen (and new JUCOS)will have the biggst impact, but the ones we NEED the most are:
K Trippe, B Woods, J Wynn, A Dent, D. Gamble, T. Sturdivant, V. Vance, and J. Davis.
If most of these guys have good seasons and are SEC ready before their primes… we will be tough to beat.
If this group doesn’t perform, it will be tough to beat the FL’s, TN’s, and Auburn’s.

Hunkerdown and Buck:
on offensive play selection, I’d like to see us be balanced and good at both running and passing. That may seem obvsious, but we haven’t really been that strong a running team under Richt most years.
The hardest teams to stop are the ones that are balanced. On third and three, is it a run or a pass? First and 10? 2nd and 9 or 2nd and 2? If the D doesn’t know it is harder for the opposition to be in the defense that takes away the type of play the offensive is going to run.
Balanced offenses help in other ways. Obviously, if an opponent has a weakness, we can exploit it. Short corners? Weak pass rush, Linebackers that overpursue, Lack of depth at DL? If a team has one of these problems, we can change our gameplan and run or pass more to make it even tougher on the D.
It also helps to be balanced in PRACTICE. If a team doesn’t throw well, then other teams will be more likely to throw on them with success because the defense is not going up against a stellar passing attack in the practices and scrimmages.
I think we can be good at both IF:
1.) The young OL jells and Big Cheese and Velasco come into camp in shape and avoid injury, particularly early in the year. Some of the younger OL live up their promise and play a little older than they are.
2.) We cut way down on turnovers. Were we last in the SEC in 06 or next to last?
3.) We cut down on penalty killing drives. In the first half of the tech game, they couldn’t stop us, so we did that for them with some foolish penalities. Nearly every game, had similar situations. Obviously, we aren’t going to go penalty free in any game, but how many of our drives last year were not ended in eithe a score, a penalty essentially making it too tough to get the first down, or a turnover? Not that many.

Southerland will have a big year. But as far as freshmen go, if Moreno lives up to the hype, he has the potential of taking over the backfield this year. Im sure Brown is hungry so it wont be easy. If things work out with King and Moreno, we might be looking at the fortunate situation AU was in a few years back with cadillac and ronnie brown. All I know for sure is that we are so close I can taste the season opener. By the way, is anyone playing NCAA 08? Unbeleivable improvments this year on the next gen systems. Check it out to hold yourself over this last month. GO DAWGS!
