UGAUGA

UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Privacy and the right to know

It’s times like these that you really don’t like being a reporter. I’m referring to yesterday’s horrible accident that involved Drew Landers, the son of Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers. Drew was injured and had to be life-flighted to Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital and one of his coaches at North Oconee High was killed in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer in Oxford, Ala. Sunday evening.

I was informed of the accident early this morning and was asked to file a report for the newspaper. Of course, that involves calling people that would probably prefer not be bothered at the moment. I called Coach Landers a few times on his cell phone and finally got his wife Pam on that number a few hours ago. She said they were “doing as well as could be expected under the cirsumstances” but didn’t care to comment any further about Drew’s condition. She said would ask Andy to call me but wasn’t sure whether he would. I still haven’t heard from him but, by all indications, it appears the young Landers is going to be OK.

Here’s why it’s important I speak with Coach Landers: Nowadays you must talk directly to an individual or a parent about a medical situation because of a federal privacy rule known as HIPAA (pronounced “HIP-puh”). An acronym for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the law was enacted in 1996 and required that medical agencies and caregivers share medical information only with direct family members and/or people or insurance agencies they specify.

As sports reporters, we run into this rule all the time, especially during football season, when we’re trying to determine what sort of injury a player may have suffered. The more major the injury, the more difficult it can be to get the information. In the meantime, while we respect the law and abide by it, we do everything we can to acquire the information because you, our loyal readers, expect it if not demand it. Anyway, I’m not complaining. Just trying to give you guys some insight into some of the hoops we have to jump through to bring you the news.

Meanwhile, here’s some information to file away:

The UGA Kickoff 2007, an annual preseason football celebration hosted by former Georgia football players Jon and Matt Stinchcomb, is set for July 6-7. There’s a golf tournament on the 6th, an auction that night, then the main event is Saturday at 3 p.m. at the UGA practice fields. Former and current players will be on hand for autographs and such and there’s interactive games for the kids. For information, go to www.ugakickoff.com.

There’s a guy named Jake Ivey who, along with some friends, have come up with the concept of “The Fulmer Cup.” The Fulmer Cup goes to the football team that records the most arrests between last year’s bowl games and the first game of this season. At the moment, they have Georgia leading, though I’m not sure their accounting is accurate. Go to http://www.secfanatics.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=25122 and see what you think.

Carter Strickland and I have a lot of stories planned this week so stay tuned.

Chip: I don’t see why you need to cover this story in the paper. It is not a sports story. It is tragic story of life and death, and if the Landers family does not want to talk to you, it is their right. Too often the media is not willing to leave things alone. This is an example of a time when respecting someone’s right of privacy is the right thing to do, and it is not hard to figure that out.

The Fulmer Cup originated at and was created by EDSBS.com, the finest college football website on the planet, not the ripoff site that’s knocking around. Please note this.

ALERT

Paul Westerdawg of Georgia — aka Decatur Dawg — of Georgia Sports Blog and Orson Swindle (above in responses) point out that this Ivey guy’s Fulmer Cup is a rip off of an original idea. For what it’s worth, I’ve got nothing to do with any of it. I hadn’t seen it before and just thought it was a kind of funny, quirky thing worthy of sharing with you guys. So patronize whomever you want, I’m staying out of it!

Maybe you shouldn’t bother the family during this time. Sounds more like harassment than reporting:

Of course, that involves calling people that would probably prefer not be bothered at the moment. I called Coach Landers a few times on his cell phone and finally got his wife Pam on that number a few hours ago.

Good luck Coach Landers. Chip, leave this family alone. They will call you when they are darn good and ready. You’re a habitual line stepper.

“You’re staying out of this”?

Why? Because it’s not -your- work that’s being ripped? Pathetic.

If the Fulmer Cup is named after Phil, the award should be reserved for those teams with the most “felony” arrests.

UPDATE

Just received a statement from Coach Landers via UGA’s sports info office. Story will be updated a little later:

“Drew sustained a head injury in the collision as well as a bruised lung. Other than that, there does not appear to be any additional injuries of consequence. There has been no surgery and none scheduled at this point. The doctors and medical personnel at Grady Health System have been outstanding and from conversations with them we are very optimistic about his prognosis for recovery.

“This has been a harrowing experience as it would be for any parent. It’s been a rough ride but it has been made smoother by the support of family and friends and the extended University of Georgia family. I especially want to thank Drew*s friends and the people at North Oconee High School who have all been super.”

Chip -

Journalistic integrity that you talk about in the main focus of your column demands that you research The Fulmer Cup and rightfully credit the creator (it is Orson). It would be one thing if the other guys created a Fulmer Cup for some other scenario (most doughnuts consumed by a team… whatever) and just happened to call it the same. These boys are ripping the idea and title, lock, stock and barrel.

By mentioning one site, and subsequently being notified of the existence of a potential site that the concept is being lifted from and, thus, the potential issue, you’re already “in it” and can’t stay out of it.

Ouch? I’m feeling no pain dude.

Pam Landers answered Andy’s phone earlier today. I spoke with her awhile and asked her to have Andy to call me back. He didn’t and that’s fine. He’s got a few things on his mind. UGA issued a statement from Andy and I was satisfied. I’m sure the ABH happened to catch him when he could answer his phone. That’s fine, too.

You speak as though these are people we don’t know and that we’re adversaries of them. That’s not the case. I’ve known the Landers since I began covering Georgia in the late 1980s. My daughter attended his basketball camps and his son and my daughter were on the same club swim team. That said, we both have job responsibilites that put us on different sides of the media/subject fence. We both understand those roles.

Chip I have always liked your blogs and agree with you most of the time. With that said, as someone who has lost one of his sons in an auto accident, I can assure you that the last thing a parent needs at a time like this is media pressure for a story. Coach Landers and family should be left alone until they are ready.

My right to know is secondary to their right to be left alone. We will keep the Landers family in our prayers.

The term Fulmer Cup has been around longer than the thread in question. I don’t see what the fuss is about. Is it copyrighted or something? Does Phil Fulmer get royalties?

By V

June 25, 2007 8:50 PM | Link to this

Just for the record, I started the thread at SECF and it was strictly for forum members to discuss through the offseason. I never claimed to have invented the term, the people who visit the forum for the most part knew the term before I posted that thread. The thread is strictly for entertainment purposes and only documents arrests of SEC football players.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Chip, PLEASE show some class. Dude, you are about the lowest of low right now when it comes to being a good person. Grow up, give a family time to cope and stop using your JOB as an excuse to be a jerk. You have a CHOICE to say “No, I am not going to chase down a man whose son just about died. Let him have some time to cope. He will respond in time.” Which, by the way, is exactly what Coach Landers did.

Coach Landers, our prayers are with you and those effected by this accident. God be with you and your son.

Coach Landers and family: The prayers and best wishes of the entire DawgNation and I’m sure of the entire SEC are with you and Drew now. We hope for a speedy full recovery.

Chip, as noted above, I also agree with you most of the time. The media has no sense of common decency and when to stay the hell away from a sensitive issue. If you are so close to the Landers, then give them encouragement privately, and keep it out of the media. Reporting on the tragedy of a coach’s son is not Sports and not YOUR JOB. You, the AJC, and the rest of the media in this country need to take some sensitivity training and learn when to keep your noses the hell out of some things!

DawgMD:

You and I seem to have a different view of blogs, message boards/threads or whatever you wish to call them. In my view, I look to these stories as, first, entertainment and, second, as a news source.

Sure, information will find its way into these threads but that is not the sole reason I read them.

The serious situation regarding the accident and condition of Landers’ son is timely and absolutely news/newsworthy.

I have been reading these messages since the AJC began offering them. It has always been curious to me that many posters here are insecessantly critical of Chip and, of course, Carter. The abuse they receive seems misplaced because from my perspective these message threads are “freebies” or icing on the cake. They’re fun and I appreciate them for that. In trying to understand those who seem to get so upset and critical of the AJC authors, what is it you expect of these guys/these messages?

The Fulmer Cup, named after Tennessee Volunteers head coach and his school of well-behaved student-athletes, is an invention of EDSBS. It replaced Dijkstra’s Thug Watch threads.

I have followed the FC since its inception and find it good off-season entertainment. UGA is currently twelfth with 7 points, all alcohol related, a far cry from the Illini’s 24 and Penn State’s 23 for far more serious offenses.

Orson gives frequent updates and posts leaders on the big board at his site EDSBS.com but you can get the full standings and history at the SAS Wiki entry.

Many more entertaining nuggets are found on EDSBS as well such as this, BLAKE MITCHELL FEELS LIKE D-D-D-DANCIN, DANCIN’. Good stuff! Thanks Orson.

Couple of things and then I’ll wrap this up:

  1. It IS my job to report on these (and other) kinds of things. My editors (aka, my bosses) called me and said to file a story on Landers’ son being in a serious accident ASAP. You expect me to say, “no, I’m not going to do that. I don’t want to bother them at this time.” You think I’d keep my job very long if I handled it that way?

  2. So given that choice, I handled it as delicately as I could. We’re not a bunch of emotionless a*. We have tact and adhere to protocol.

  3. Coach Landers, above all, realizes what his place is in society. He’s a public figure, and that comes with certain obligations and responsibilities. There is public — and therefore media — interest — in his llife.

  4. I was the one who brought up this topic. I knew some folks wouldn’t get it and that’s OK. But my view of these blogs is to give readers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what it is we do, how we do it and how we feel about it. If that comes with some slings and arrows, well, fire away!

By gdawginkalamazoo

June 26, 2007 11:57 AM | Link to this

IMO it probably would have been best to wait for the official UGA press release to file the story. We would understand the timing difference and the need for the Landers to cope with this. Regardless I think everybody needs to put away the cross and nails.

Prayers out to the Landers family.

While it may be your job to file a report, that can be done without pestering someone who has a son or daughter in the ICU. Tell ‘em what happened, but you don’t need any direct quotes in your article you heartless jerk. Give the family the space they are entitled to. Chip,

Your buddy Carter Strickland wrote the following and I’m pretty sure he has Josh Davis mixed up with Chris Davis. Josh is 6’7” and over 300 lbs and is projected as a starter at tackle. Chris is the one who made tremendous progress this spring and is projected at a back up at guard. You need to tell him to proof his work so his facts are correct before he publishes.

Dogs’ Davis needs to put on weight

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/24/07

Josh Davis has a weight problem. Hold on, it’s not what you think. Davis, penciled in as a backup offensive guard after an impressive spring, needs to put on weight. “I finished the spring at 275,” the 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman said. “Right now I am at 292. I weighed this morning and I would like to add 20 more pounds by the fall.” He may need it. While Davis has displayed solid footwork, he knows he needs more muscle. “Good weight,” he calls it. “I came out of high school and I didn’t have any idea how strong these guys were.” … Preseason watch lists are beginning to filter out, and Georgia, so well represented in the past, isn’t making many appearances this year. No Bulldogs players were among the 100-plus nominated for the Outland Trophy (best interior lineman) and Bronko Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player). Georgia’s best hope for preseason award hype will likely come from kicker Brandon Coutu, who should be in the hunt for the Lou Groza Award.

Wide Receiver:

Georgia’s current receiver roster is filled with 3 and 4 star players. Literally all of them hold that distinction and there is more depth this year than at any time during Richt’s tenure.

UGA has inked the #1 or #2 best WR in the nation in AJ Greene and has another high profile verbal from T. King.

I have been critical of the position coach, Eason, on this board as have others. It just doesn’t seem we are getting our best out of the talent we have at this position. There is no other position with more highly recruited talent on the team. With a Mark Richt/Bobo designed offense (two former QB’s who are not against throwing) and a strong accurate arm in Stafford, we should be able to move the ball through the air.

Is there any reason why we shouldn’t get excellent play from the WR position in 07?

The RB position failed to live up to expectations last year as well (other than Brandon Southerland), so I’m not just singling out Eason. Part of the problem at RB is that we had little depth on the OL and we did not stay with the running game in many games in 07 before abandoning it. Still, I think Dawg Nation is looking for improvement from the running backs in 08.

The WR’s have to step up. I’m not saying there can’t be any drops and I understand that the WR’s are not responsible for Stafford’s INT’s last year. There were too many accuratley thrown balls that were not hung on to last year.

With the talent and obvious competition because of all the depth, I would expect to see excellent play from the WR’s.

I read that BS AJC poll where readers had a choice of selecting Scott and backhanding Larry, or selecting Larry and backhanding Scott.

After reading the “bias” article by Chip and seeing the poll, I decided to author my own poll based on AJV standards. I know you can’t vote on this poll, but you can respond via posts. So here it goes:

A. The AJC Sports Department editors and writers are ignorant sluts and do not recognize the bias that they spew in the Sports section.

B. The AJC Sports Department editors and writers are apathetic sluts about their jobs and do not care about the bias that they spew in the Sports section.

C. The AJC Sports Department editors and writers are both ignorant AND apathetic sluts about their jobs and do not know or care about the bias that they spew in the Sports section.

D. The AJC Sports Department editors and writers are so bad it is time to ditch the AJC altogether and find new web sites and newspapers to read about sports.

Hope you get to respond.

UGA Soft Schedule? Not according to the sports media in Dallas.

The sportswriters in Dallas took a poll to see who the two teams with the best chance to win the Big 12 were. There was no discension. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Of Course, The Dawgs open with the Cowboys and then play a team that came within a blocked extra point of beating the eventual national champion. After that are road trips to Tuscaloosa and Knoxville, the cocktail party game in Jax and Auburn at home.

The sportswriters in Dallas believe that OK State has a better team than TX this year.

Only Texas (by 2), Boise State (doesn’t count playing in their conference) and Ohio State (by 1) have more Wins in the Last Decade of 1-A Football than The Dawgs do. In the SEC Conference, there is no team who has enjoyed the consistency of success the Last Decade that The Dawgs have. Florida has Won 1 National Championship in the last decade after 3 Consecutive Seasons of Losing 5 Games a Season 3 of the last 4 years. 94-32 Florida the Last Decade is NOT 96-30 UGA has been. LSU is not even in the Top Dozen in Football Wins the last Decade, and have only half a mythical national championship when the # 1 in both the Coaches’ Poll and AP Poll was NOT SELECTED to play Saban, now at Alabama. Tied in the Top Dozen 1-A Football Programs the last entire Decade are both Tennessee and Florida tied for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th places. LSU is NOT even in the Top Dozen, and while both Florida (1 NC) and Tennessee (1 NC) have one (1) NC in the last Decade, there are 8 better more consistent programs than both of them, while there are only 3 better more consistent winning programs than The Dawgs.

(3) There are no programs in the SEC, and damn few (three (3) ) in the nation who have more players in the NFL than The Dawgs do over this last Decade. There are fifty-six (56) shown today at CBS Sportsline dot com who are Dawgs. 56 :

(4) Looking at The SEC, Georgia stands alone at the top of this conference for what The Dawgs in fact have accomplished :

SEC Decade of Dominance: 1997-2006

  1. Georgia - 96 wins. The Bulldogs have been remarkably consistent at a high level the last decade, having won eight games or more each of the last ten years. Georgia won SEC Championships under Mark Richt in both 2002 and 2005.

  2. Florida (tie) - 94 wins. The defending national champions have two SEC championships in the last ten years, 2000 and 2006. Steve Spurrier won ten games four of his last five seasons in Gainesville. Urban Meyer has won 22 games and a title in two years.

  3. Tennessee (tie) - 94 wins. Phillip Fulmer has had five double-digit win seasons since 1997, a run which includes a national championship in 1998. The ‘Vols slipped to 5-6 in 2005, but rebounded to win nine games a year ago.

  1. LSU - 86 wins. Under Nick Saban and Les Miles, the Tigers have won 44 games the last four seasons. Saban won a conference championship in 2001 and a national championship in 2003. LSU last had a losing season in 1999.

  2. Auburn - 84 wins. Chalk it up to the system, but in 2004 the Tigers went 13-0 en route to a conference championship but never got a chance to play for it all. Tommy Tuberville and company have won 33 games since 2004.

All of you attempting to make your team look better over the last Decade of 1-A Football in this conference are full of Shiite. Look at the comments about this by them at this URL Link :

By the way, only the vols have more attendance of the entire SEC than The Dawgs. And, everyone knows that Fulmer is clearly on the hot seat squarely and has been, while the consistency of Vincent J. Dooley’s Coaches he hired the Last Decade have put UGA on top of all football programs in this conference for the last entire Decade - which is why it hurt so much with a not-ready-for-prime-time true Frosh QB to come in and do nothing positive and everything negative against for example Vandie and Kentucky last season. Now, this season, The Dawgs don’t have the Defense that has had Coach Mark Richt’s Defenses in the Top 10 in the Nation in NCAA Total Defense every year of the Coach Richt Era at UGA that we can rely upon to offset 13 interceptions (to only 7 TD passes) and 10 additional fumbles (6 lost not flopped upon by his OL) (to only his 3 rushing TDs last season) this True Frosh put up last season in which only he played every game at QB. Not playing his recruiting class of last year except 3 when Coach Richt have averaged the Number 5 Best Recruiting Class in the Nation for 6 Consecutive Years cost him in the recruiting this year, but now we have that behind us and move on to obviously another Top 5 Recruiting Class for 2008 already committed, who at UGA have kept their commitments in the Coach Richt Era. I would like to have Won our 7th National Championship in the last Decade, but our Offense has been inconsistent every single solitary year of this last Decade. None of this alters the fact that over the last entire Decade of 1-A Football that of the SEC programs, UGA has been The Best.

Big Dawg, I agree and hope so. It has been so much better having Chip cover the dogs and blogs. He seems to have a passion for the dogs and you can tell in his (objective) writing. The other dude seems to go out of his way to take a dig or what not at us.

Chip, I am here because someone has to address the AJC with the same bias and hatred that the AJC addresses UGA.

I want you to know what it feels like and expose the AJC to its readers for what it is. I want to put the AJC “in its place”.

Excellent selective anaylsis. I think I’ve figured out what you do for a living. A bean counter for a major corporation. Stats and numbers. Charts and graphs…

Yeah, Pitbull, the stories on the Bulldogs at Camp Sunshine and the Richts on a mission to Honduras confirm our hatred for UGA. You have “put us in our place” and exposed us. Thanks for doing to communiuty a service.

Chip, The Bulldogs at Camp Sunshine and the Richts on a mission to Honduras are two great stories.

However the ATC’s reputation is one of bias based on a history of past NUMEROUS misleading and degrading headlines and stories over the years.

Your own story on bias towards UGA last week confirms this by raising the issue as a concern.

It doesn’t feel good to be “put in your place” does it? I can tell by the tone of your response.

I hope in the future the AJC keeps that in mind when writing about college students that play football.

You are welcome for my communiuty service.

Chip,

Keep up the Great Work, I for one appreciate you and your reporting on our Dawgs. Did you speak to your buddy Carter about proofing his articles before publishing? I’m just curious if you gave him a little razzing for his blunder. Go Dawgs

BTW the Dawgs are going to surprise this year as they are tremendously improved on offense and they will be just as good or better on defense. After the Kentucky game last year Coach Richt did have a conversation with Coach Martinez, Fabris and others.

Pit give Chip a break or he will throw up his hands in disgust and we will get the original ignorant slut back. Now I do not mind you using my patent pending phrase “ignorant slut”. But if it gets Carter back on the blog, I may have to seek legal recourse.

Cuz, you are right that Chip is the most fair towards UGA of any of the AJC sports staff. At least his heart seems to be in the right place and that means a lot.

It is just the AJC’s history of using UGA as an easy target in a negative manner to attract readers and sell papers that rankles me.

I look at the AJC like an abusive spouse that promises never to hit again. You can never be absolutely certain if they are trustworthy enough to believe, and only time will tell.

But you are right Cuz that Chip does seem to be one of the good guys and I do not blame him for coming to the defense of his employer. I would do the same thing.
