UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

One more time on Munson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s always fascinating to me to see the tremendous response we always get about anything we write concerning Larry Munson. I have never seen an individual — including many of the on-field or sideline legends to have worn the red and black — that elicits such an emotional outpouring from almost everyone all the time.
Of course, Munson was in the news this week because he said he wasn’t sure whether he’d be able to announce Georgia football games this fall. For a little background on this, I was in our office in downtown Atlanta in a training class (we have to complete 20 hours of journalism training every year) when I got a text message that something was up with Munson. I have to be honest, I thought he must’ve died.
When I went to see my editor on the 8th floor, he pointed out the Macon newspaper had written a story quoting Larry that it was “50-50” whether he’d be able to go this fall. I laughed. “He says that every year,” I told my editor. “We wrote something about it last year.” And the year before that and the year before that, I’m pretty sure.
Here’s the bottom line: Munson will turn 85 later this year. He is dealing daily with all the health issues somebody of that age must. I’m reminded of what my father, Ray, always tells me — “Getting old ain’t for sissies” — and don’t we all know that’s the truth?
But I know Larry very well personally and a lot of people close to Larry and the reality is this: What else is he going to do? Of course, Larry loves to fish and to go to the movies. But as much as everybody believes Georgia football IS Larry Munson, Georgia football is EVERYTHING to Munson. I personally think he’ll still be doing it if they have to roll him to the mic in a wheelchair, which very well might be the case.
That said, we will continue to stay in touch with Larry and follow his situation closely and be sure to keep you informed of his status. In fact, we’ll be following up with a story for tomorrow in which we talk some more to Larry about his iconic status among the Georgia people and include some anecdotes from you, his fans.
So once again, let me give a shout out to ask for feedback on Munson. If you have a favorite memory or — even better — a particularly interesting personal experience with Munson over the years, please e-mail your thoughts to me at ctowers@ajc.com, include your name, hometown and a phone number at which you can be reached and we’ll see about getting it published in Thursday’s newspaper.

I work for the company that is tied in very close to the Georgia Bulldog Radio network, and lemme tell ya… this isn;t him just talking. this is real. My hope is that he will do a farewell season, but I would not be surprised if he just does home games, and lets Scott Howard use the troad games as his audition.
I love Larry like most of you, and I wish him well, but 85 is very… very old and he can’t do this forever.

Which game was it when Georgia scored a touchdown and Larry Munson said “THE GIRDERS ARE BENDING.”
I think it was the 1980 UGA-UF game, but I am not for sure. Does anyone remember?
I do remember the FIRST game that Larry became the “homer” that he is. It was one of the most exciting games I haver ever heard.
It was the 1973 UGA-UT game. UGA drove down to the UT goal line, and with the clock running down and on 3rd or 4th down, Andy Johnson got a bad snap that bounced up off the carpet back up to him, and he ran about 4 yards into the end zone for the TD and upset of UT.
What a great game.

Old Gruppy needs to go. His style of broadcasting is old school. It will be nice to hear a fresh voice on the radio.
Everytime he grunts and growls on the radio sounds like he is s** all over himself.
When he is gone, the next person that needs to hit the door is Loren Smith.

I like UGA but I am not a diehard Dawg fan. I thoroughly enjoy hearing Munson call games. I do sometimes get tired of his continual crying about how the Dawgs need this or that, but that’s college football. He’s my favorite and I hope he continues as long as it’s in his best interest from a health perspective. Larry - you’re the best and I wish you the best! God Bless You.

Munson has been a total embarassment to UGA students and graduates for decades. If you attend a UGA football game while listening to Munson on the radio, you will swear each of you are watching a completely different game. Plus, he has no earthly idea how to call a game where a listener has any idea of what is actually occuring. He and the girlish Lauren Smith need to leave as soon as possible for the sake of all that is holy.

For what it’s worth, I wrote this blog before I was able to meet with Larry on Thursday. Interesting aside: he said one person already invited him to go to Georgia-Florida in Jacksonville as a fan this fall. He declined… .
Actually I believe the “girders are bending” comment came on the Appleby to Washington play against Florida in 1975… . For my money, Larry’s best comment was thne 1980 Georgia-Florida, Run Lindsay call but at the end when he was talking of those people in those condiminums in St. Simons and Jekyll and Amelia islands, “there’s going to be some property destroyed tonight.”

I think it’s a disgrace when any UGA fan says things like “Old Gruppy needs to go” and “His style of broadcasting is old school”
This shows no appeciation whatsoever for what Larry has meant to UGA football. Larry is a great bulldog and he still does fanstatic work.
Larry can stay as long as he wants too. He’s a UGA legend.

If he is ready to retire, I would like to see Larry replaced by CHUCK DOWDLE AND/OR BILL HARTMAN from WSB TV. I think both are UGA alumni.
I think Chuck played basketball at UGA, and Bill’s father was Coach Hartman, who coached UGA kickers for years.
They are both polished and experienced onlune and would bring excitement to the game.

God Bless you, Larry. Having helped my parents, and my in-laws, into their end years, I have some idea of what you may be going through. If you retired today, it would be understandable. But, know this, Larry Munson has been the VOICE of Georgia football for more years than many have been alive. Thank God for your intelligence, ability, and loyalty that you have shown for all these years (good and bad). Munson IS the best. And, as for you “GA ALUM”, stick a football up your…well, where the sun never shines. GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS!

My favorite call by Larry was a couple of years ago. The dogs trying for a field-goal late in the game against Auburn, and Larry said “The kick is up, and the kick is, and the kick is, and the kick is, NO GOOOOOD!” Little doggies lose again….

For those of you who actually think that UGA alums or fans are saying Larry needs to go, know this now your error. No real Dawg fan would ever say one unkind word of Larry. These are the insanely jealous and lesser degrees of humanity. They cannot look at others outside their little worlds with anything less than contempt. They are such cowards that they hide themselves in names that invoke UGA spirit, all the while denigrating everything that the Dawg Nation stands upon. To put it in one phrase, they would have to climb on their grandmothers shoulders just to kiss the bottom of Larrys sneakers. Pay them no heed.
Listening to the replays I can remember where I was during most of those legendary calls. Larry has become as much a part of my life as any relative. He is truly a member of my family as I am sure that he is of most of the Bulldawg Nation.
The Florida game of 1980 found me at the AGR house in Athens with a good fifty or so who could not attend the game due to financial reasons. We had already spent our money on beer, women and song but mostly beer. As the clock ran down I left the TV room to sulk in my room. I turned on my radio because I wanted to hear Larry call the final minutes. As I sat with another chilly beverage, Larry started calling the famous Buck to Lindsey play. I jumped to my feet, dropped my beer and started trashing my room. 40, 45 Run Lindsey! By the time he reached the famous Lindsey Scott, Lindsey Scott, my third floor room was trashed and I threw three folding chairs off the third floor fire escape to their inevitible destruction. I then ran downstairs to the TV room and leaped into a writhing mass on the floor that was incapable of making any coherent noises. We then stormed out of the front door and stopped traffic on South Milledge by leaping and screaming in the middle of 441 at the time. One of Athens finest made it down the sidewalk and gave us a ticket for rioting in the streets. We moved to the sidewalk. He came back ten minutes later, demanded the ticket, tore it up and said keep your a*******es out of the street.
Larry you are part and parcel of my fondest memories. The only thing that can beat your inclusion in my life is the birth and lives of my children. Whenever my buddies and I get together we retell the stories and you are inevitibly part of the story. You have earned your rest. Rest easy my friend. We shall always recall your name with a smile on our face and a swipe at the eyes. May you call homegames till you want to quit. Feel the power and Hunker it down just one more time.
God bless you and keep you safe. your fan, Cuz…

Larry Munson is the Fans Coach! I have listened to him his entire time at UGA always turning down the TV to hear him on the radio or listening on the internet albeit a short delay. He is genuine, the real deal, and a true original. I play tapes of him on game day trips to Athens. My children and now my grandchildren will know and love him. I relive 1980 with Munson. God Bless Larry Munson ! We love ya man!

Larry, if you have to go, please give us this year to say goodbye. I like the idea of Larry doing home games. This way, Scott gets used to being the guy in the seat for the away games, and we get to say goodby to Larry 7 times this year in the best stadium in college football.
Larry, you’re one in an infinity. There’s never been anyone like you before, and will never be anyone like you ever again. I may not be as wise (i.e. old) as some of the guys on here like Altamaha and Buck, but I know for me, my Georgia memories are tied to your voice. I’m going to miss muting those losers from CBS and ESPN and putting you on the radio.

GA Alum…your an idiot and a joke. If you honestly think that Munson doesn’t know how to call a football game, then I seriously question your knowledge of of the game. Now, if you are referring to recent seasons, Munson himself admitted to having difficulty calling games due to his aging. Obviously he recognizes that his career is winding down, so cut him some slack…and shut the hell up! The same goes for all you other Munson haters out there.
Now, I love Munson, and I would hate to see him go. But I actually like the setup of him splitting the season with Scott Howard. Don’t be surprised if Munson makes this his last season. I think Scott would do well and this will give Dawg Nation a chance to see his full abilities outright, which would lessen the shock of a Munson-less 2008 season.
You are Georgia football, Larry, and you will definitely be missed!

Thanks, Larry, for the memories, and the ones to come this year. Despite your age and health, you still have the passion and fire for UGA football. That by itself is evidence of your legendary status in Bulldog lore. One call that is missing from the “all time” list is the GA-GT game this past fall, on the final touchdown drive to win the game. Larry’s excitement and delivery was no different than if he were 30 years younger. I was driving when I heard it and almost wrecked pounding on the steering wheel, sharing the sheer delirium of the moment. Wish I could hear that one again … perhaps we will… .

“GA Alum”, I believe the problem is you have no idea what is going on with the football game nor any of your buddies. Either you are a hapless gator or a useless yellowjacket who wondered into the wrong blog. Nobody pulled your string so shut-up! Larry Munson is the best there ever was in football radio broadcasting. He is a hero among the Dawg faithful. No other team can talk of such heros and thus become jealous. Take a look at the UF guy who sounds like he’s going to pee all over himself everytime they make a play.

Uh Oh there Brett; I must have struck a nerve. You should have chosen to not write and let people wonder if you were actually an inane dupe, rather than write as you did and remove all doubt. If you recall Munson’s old years and recent years (where he’s been using the same rhetoric for decades), phrases like “they’re in an I” and “Georgia with two wideouts”, et cet., no one’s had a clue as to what was happening from anything he said; he only caught up after the play and told you what happened (not what was actually happening). Most listeners could care less if they’re in an “I” formation or not; they want to know who lines up where, who goes in motion, is there a blitz on, and so forth. I graduated from UGA over 30 years ago, as did thousands of others. We had to put up with Munson’s idiocy over and over and over again, and it is partly because of him and his self-righteous, egotistical, maniacal manner of “trying” to call a football game that lots of people think of UGA grads as dumb as a sack of hammers. Whether you like it or not, lots of us are ecstatic that he is acting like dog dung and hitting the dusty trail. Lauren, what have you got?

The life and times of Larry Munson. He comes from what Tom Brokaw refers to as ‘The Greatest Generation’…I concur. Larry earned his legacy. Unlike today’s ‘Whiner Generation’, Munson worked his way to immortality. There wasn’t a 6 figure salary awaiting him at Daddy’s firm when he reached of age. Munson did and does what Munson loves. I hope we faceless bloggers can say at 85 that we loved every minute of what we did, too. Else, we’ve blown our shot… Hobnail boots to you…

Ga Alum,
The big flaw in your attacks on Larry is the fact that if someone is willing to put a football game on the radio instead of watch it, then they probably know what wideouts and an “I” are. Get the picture?
Otherwise, growing up in a Bulldog home, I grew up with Larry too, listening to him on the radio with my family before the Dawgs were on TV every week (almost). For the games I went to, nothing beat driving home after a win and reliving the triumph though Larry’s calls.
Now that I’m actually at Georgia, the only time I get to hear Larry is if I tape the games, which I plan on doing next season. Afterwards, though I love Scott Howard, Georgia football won’t be quite the same. Larry Munson IS Georgia and is as engrained in UGA lore as Herschel. We’ll miss you Larry.

LARRY MUNSON … LIVING LEGEND!!!!
All good things must come to an end but don’t you hate it when that happens? Larry Munson … a class act, a true Dog, a blessing in this life. I pray Larry’s remaining life will be filled with large fish, great trips to the movies and a Bulldog team that lives up to his heart’s desire. Losses in this life make your heart sad and this is a great loss to those who love Georgia football and Larry Munson. God bless you Larry and may your remaining days be filled with fond memories as you look back and remember there’s nothing greater than a beautiful, blue sky fall afternoons at Sanford Stadium with the Dawgs in red and black and 92,000 fans on fire with love for their dogs and you. I first heard Larry back in 1976 when I had moved from Alabama to Georgia. I was listening to the GA/Bama game with some friends who were avid bulldog fans, and I was an avid Bama fan at that time. On one first and ten play the dawgs were sacked for a loss and I thought yes a loss of 10 yards or so. Larry made it sound so bad, then his next words were Dawgs, second and 11. I was hooked and later attended UGA and never forgot the first game I heard him call.

I have always loved criticizing Larry Munson’s playcalling style. However, I am genuinely saddened to hear of his ailing and his difficulties getting around. Things like that go well beyond a football rivalry and I hope that he can get better enjoy several more years! Criticisms aside, I have to admit half the fun of Georgia losing is listening to Larry Munson call those games! :) Gotta love the ole classic “Wake Forest or Maryland or somebody” from the 2000 game!

He could interview all the oposing team mascotts and yell at them about being gulity of a crime and tell them how to lead their life the kincaide way. I moved from Maryland to LaGrange, Georgia, in 1993, I started listening to the occasional college game on the radio—Auburn, Alabama, and Georgia. It didn’t take me long to become a Munson fan, and I became a Dawg fan because of him. I’m going to miss Larry like nobody’s business, but my biggest concern is for his health and safety. As my wife and I care for my 85 year old Mom, we understand and empathize with Larry having to deal with his health and aging issues pretty much on his own. I wish him nothing but the best.

Munson should have retired over a decade ago. He is the worst. When I listen to him I have no idea what is going on in the game. Where is the ball? What is the play? What is the score? How much time is left?
That hobnail boot thing was the stupiest thing I have ever heard. It wasn’t a classic call that many Dawg fans believe. It was an embarrasing rant that one might hear come out of the mouth of an Alzheimer patient.
I wish Mr. Munson well, health wise. I will not miss his incoherent ramblings in the booth, however.

What a terrible week for the state of Georgia and college football. First, Larry Munson says that he is going to be half-time (which is great since we’ll still get to hear him between the hedges!) and the Wramblin’ Wreck gets wrecked for real in life!! What a terrible week!

Last year’s Tech game when he wondered if Loren had a stroke was brilliant.
Didn’t he do some basketball games?
I thought I remembered an LSU double overtime game from the early 90s.
Was that him?

I second that, Robert. The Georgia game muted on tv and Munson on the radio doing the call. Nothing more boring than an impartial announcer.

I had never even heard of a hobnail boot was until Larry. It was classic, spontaneous and perfect for the moment (remember we had not won in Knoxville in a long time before that upset).
Mr. Frustrated, you are a constipated twit. Take some Metamucil and go back to the Tech board.
Larry, God bless you.

I was 2 when I first heard Munson and was inspired to a career in broadcasting because of him. In the 80’s I got the chance to work in the booth with Larry and Scott and I can tell ya’ll firsthand what a classy guy he truly is. He is a true superstar in our profession but is still humble and approachable and genuine (unlike some of the names that have been suggested here as possible replacements) Scott Howard is the only man for the job and I wish Munson and the Dawgnation all the best for years to come. Larry —thanks for inspiring a whole generation of young broadcasters and giving us some big shoes to fill!

All of you wanting Larry to retire are scum. I am sure all are Ga. Tech fans.
I am a Bama fan and even i love to hear Larry call the UGA games. He is an original and makes the games very exciting to listen to.
Larry, i understand what you are saying. My dad is 84 and lives with me and i see how tough it is. Just know that everybody loves you and if you cant do it anymore we will all still love you.
Do what makes you happiest and enjoy the rest of your life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the great memories.

He’s coming up the ramp. Now he’s on the elevator! Security guards to his left, campus police on the right. He steps off the elevator, the press box door is open. He sits down, puts on the headphones, oh my! what comfortable headphones. He turns on his microphone and there’s a crisp clear sound. He clears his throat once, twice with some Dasani water. Oh my what a thirst quencher! Back to you Loren.

Haters… back off and blog somewhere else. This is a place for fans who adore the legends of our University to voice our affection for Larry, Vince, Loran, Herschel, Coach Richt, Buck, and whoever the hell else we want. How in this world could someone, even fans of another institution, belittle the life and career of an 84 year old ICON is just amazing. But then again, maybe that’s why Tech and all these other schools have such a problem establishing any dominance in Football. Football is a traditions sports. Played by, revered by, and reserved for those who appreciate what it was, is and stands for. And no place exemplifies that tradition better than UGA. And no one exemplifies it better than…. LARRY MUNSON!!!!
C’mon Larry, I don’t think you can hear us…. HUNKER IT DOWN ONE MORE TIME!!! We are not ready to see you go!!! Hal Valdosta, GA nsbdawg@msn.com

I hope everyone will realize that Larry has to do what’s best for him. Age isn’t the issue. His health is the issue.
What would be more thoughtful than accepting his decision, supporting and honoring him and go about getting the best replacement.
Scott Howard calls basketball so he has to think fast and describe a lot of action despite it being only 10 players. He would be my first choice if UGA goes with a “Homer” as a lot of people describe some of our announcers. He or whoever it is, will have to grow into the job as we adjust to a new era.
Hire Scott and get a young, black, articulate guy to do the color(pun not intended).Begin phasing Loran out and include a really knowledgeable lady to work the sidelines. We can have her and a guy since the action is swift.
This will be my 40th yr as a UGA fan and I will miss Larry if he goes but time marches on.I do hope he has 1-2 years, or more, for the home games !
Best wishes to a “D—n good dog !

How very sad that someone would feel the need to be so negative about Larry Munson. It seems to me if you don’t like his style of broadcasting, you should just NOT listen to him. I find that people who are that negative about things are NOT happy with themselves. They are also the kind of people who have NO friends and NO one to talk to therefore they use a site like this to try to make others as miserable as they are. We should feel sorry for these people. What a miserable life they must lead. We all know that by far the majority of GA fans love Larry. He makes the games so exciting to listen to, and you don’t have to listen to the TV announcers who are often so one sided leaning toward the other team. I start out game days playing CD’s of the greatest calls from Munson, and HOW could anyone not get excited about the day and the upcoming game? It is the greatest way to travel to Athens that I know of. My son who is a Gator fan listens to Larry when we are playing the Gators instead of listening to the television commentators. He even called me to say how sad it was for the Dawg nation that Larry would be leaving us. He said people all over the country know who Larry Munson is and how great he has been for UGA. As one person said, If you can’t say something nice about someone, DON’T say anything. As a friend of mine said, it will never be the same, and we all know this. Now, for the rude people who are attacking Larry, please keep your thoughts to yourselves and don’t clog up this site with vicious comments. When you are so cruel to good people YOU have to pay for what you say in the end. This cannot make you a happy person to be so ugly. Those of us who love Larry would appreciate it if you would use your time doing something other than trying to attack a GREAT man.Enough PLEASE. God Bless you Larry.

I was born a block from the Varsity. My father was a Tech grad. I went to Tennessee and Florida. Needless to say I have never been a UGA fan, but every year I sit in the stands in Jacksonville listening to Munson rather than the Gator Network.
When I returned to Atlanta from Florida in the late 70s my primary source of SEC football was WSB radio. I still turn down the TV sound and listen to Munson whenever I watch a Georgia game.
He will be missed.

Ga Alum since you have proven your attendance of UGA by your correction of Altamaha, I have one word for you. It is Loran, not Lauren.
Idiots like you make me laugh. Pathetic bug fly away before I get you with a flyswatter.
I graduated UGA in 1983 by the way. Altamaha has forgotten more about UGA than you would ever learn.
I have a call in to Pope Benedict to see if we can get Larry cannonized with Sainthood to follow. Some of those miracle finishes have to be attributed to him. I think all he needs is three miracles, one card trick and two knock knock jokes. Saint Larry of Sanford has a nice ring.

Update on Penn State football player’s brawl:
2 of the 6 players involved in this altercation have been ordered to stand trial for assault and battery. Their punishment? They will be suspended from the Summer sememster and return to the team in time for Fall Practice. It does not appear that either will miss any practice time let alone game time
The other 4 players who were involved in this but are not being brought up on charges, don’t appear to have any punishment other than internal team directed extra cleanup or stadium stairs.
The reports have not specified, but does anyone believe that none of these players were drinking? Were they all hopped up on milk? Nobody knows because police forces at other college towns and their Universities are not behaving like UGA. None of them.
It brings up an interesting point:
What if this had happened at UGA last month rather than Penn State? You might say, “who cares”, but I believe it is relevant. They are both long standing football programs, well respected, located in classic college towns and expected to compete for top 10 finishes and conference championships.
If this happened at UGA, I believe that the two ordered to stand trial would be kicked off the team for at least a year and miss the full 12 games. The other 4 would be supended for 2 games (if there were no prior incidents). Can you imagine if UGA lost 6 ADDITIONAL players for the OK State and S. Carolina games. Would it cost us 1 game?, 2?
I bring this up because many of us are clamoring for some good investigative journalism about what in the world is happening at UGA these days with 25 plus game day suspensions for ONLY posessing alchohol in the last 18 months.
By comparison, two players at Penn State are going to trial for assault and battery and will miss 0 games. Two players at UGA miss 2 games appiece for holding a cup of beer (one was 21). It just doesn’t add up.

Recruiting:
With OL Ben Jones Committment, the Dawgs are at 16 verbals. It is entirely possible that UGA will have already handed out all the scholarships available for 08 BEFORE the start of the college or highschool seasons!! Very usual. I wonder if that has ever been done.
Is Ben Jones that guy that was routinely beating AJ Harmon at a recent camp? I thought I read something about that on these blogs.
With so few left, UGA should be in the unique position of going to players like Sabino, Patchan, Love, and Butler and say “We only have 3-4 ships left and we are getting at least one committment a month. Everyone wants to get into our program, we think the world of you and you will get every opportunity to compete for time at UGA, we don’t want to rush you, but we don’t want to see you miss out on the opportunity you have at UGA.”
It is a simple supply and demand equation. Having only a handful of ships left makes them that much more valuable compared to most schools who still have 15-20 to give.

As a current UGA student, and a lifelong fan of the Dawgs, it makes me sad to know that Munson won’t be calling the road games, and will have to call it quits sooner than later. My dad started taking me to football games younger than I can remember, and if we weren’t at the games the TV was on and muted and Munson was on the radio. My friends and I have carried on the same way (mostly for away games), and it will be strange and sad to turn on the radio for the games we don’t attend and not hear his voice. Glad to know Howard will be doing the away games, and I would like to see Howard and Buck do the games together.
It disgusts me to read “fans” making degrading comments about Munson - take your sour attitudes somewhere else. If you think it’s time for him to retire, you can express that without saying nasty things about a man who is nothing but a class act. He’s a living legend, and part of what makes Georgia Football so great.
Larry - wishing you health and happiness, and a few more seasons behind the mic!!

All you lieing, yellow bellie scum out there who come on this tribute to insult Larry, grow up or grow some gnads and say who you are.
Larry has never talked down about Tech or any of the other schools we play. Your classless acts only show the true sportsman that is Larry Munson.
I always miss the first home game. It coincides with opening day of dove season and that is another Southern ritual that would be hard to explain if you do not know it already. I always take a radio. Before I know it, we forget about the hunt and there are at least ten hunters gathered around me listening to Larry with the other twenty yelling for the scores and what phrase has Larry coined today.
In my lifetime, I can think of no other who has made a greater impact on Georgia football. And that includes Herschel Walker and Vince Dooley.

I remember as a child getting my first transistor radio and listening to it as sporting events were broadcast from sometimes a thousand miles away and wondering what it would be like to be there and see what was being broadcast. No one has ever been able to more accurately give you a feel for that gameday experience like Larry Munson. Yes, maybe there are those who are better at spouting statistics, or loads of info that you don’t really care about, but it takes a rare breed, someone like Harry Caray and his days as the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals that could even come close to Larry Munson. When he starts with, “Now get the picture…” you can almost smell the popcorn and hot chocolate as if you are really there, and as previously posted; sometimes it was almost better than being there. Sure, in the last few years larry’s health has declined and some of the sharpness and crispness of the details have gone with it, but the heart and soul are still there. The emotion that comes through those radio waves is something truly special, and the testimony of others who lived without Larry for so long and were somehow blessed to have become one of his fans is enough to tell the tale of how special he is and has been to so many of us.

Most people remember Mr. Munson for Georgia Football as I do also.
I also rember Mr. Munson for Nashville Vols baseball for which he announced in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Time has passed and I can’t recall exact dates. What I do recall is being a very small child and sneaking a radio under the covers of my bed to listen to him announce for my beloved Vols. Of course he didn’t know that and neither did my beloved mother but I still remember it to this day.
