UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Long odds on Dogs winning title

Time to clear out the notebook and see what we can find… .

Do you think Georgia has a chance to win the national championship this season? If you do, you have a chance to make some money in Las Vegas.

According to sportsbetting.com, the odds of the Bulldogs winning the national title are 35 to 1. That’s the fourth best odds among SEC schools. Florida leads at 7 to 1, followed by LSU (10-1) and Arkansas (30-1). Behind Georgia are Auburn and Tennessee (60-1), Alabama (75-1) and South Carolina (100-1). The favorite is Southern Cal at 5-2.

In light of the latest alcohol-related arrests at Georgia, we have need to pause a moment to keep this in perspective. Defending national champion Florida had its sixth and seventh arrests since its bowl victory recently and the Gators’ problems are a lot more serious than underage consumption. Their last two players were arrested for felony possession and there have been gun charges and other such serious incidents in recent weeks.

Interviewed NaDerris “Duke” Ward this morning. The highly-touted tight end from Oakland suddenly finds himself in the spotlight after the recent arrest of Tripp Chandler. Writing a story on him for Sunday’s paper. All I’ll say is he’s a super polite and impressively humble young man.

Word is that Georgia’s tight end woes might not be a major issue this fall. The Bulldogs are set run more three and four wide receiver sets anyway with the improvement of the wideouts and, of course, Matthew Stafford under center.

Georgia’s national championship tennis team heads to the White House to meet President George Bush on Monday. John Isner makes his pro debut a week later.

A national title is unlikely. This is still a relatively young team, especially on defense. We’re a year or two away from being at a national title level, but winning the SEC East is a realistic goal. Once you’ve done that you’re one game away from a conference title and a BCS bowl.

I’m saying the same thing as I was after our Feb. recruiting class: UGA has as good as shot as anyone to win the NC this year. Who thought FLA would’ve won last year?? Most didn’t even pick them to win their Bowl game the week of, much less before the season started.

I’d rather beat Florida than win the National Championship. Let’s just beat Florida, and maybe win the SEC. Stafford will win the National Championship when he is a junior.

I like that the Dawgs are flying under the radar. We are picked preseason top 25 but not as a team to challenge for championships. Good position to be in. We can come in the back door instead of the front. I like our squad. Excellent QB. Experienced backfield. Good interior DL. Experience at the corners and safeties. We do have problem areas but so does everyone else. Sean Bailey is coming back and so is MoMass. Naderris Ward is going to be a force. LB and DE are our weakest areas. Georgia is very capable of playing in Atlanta twice this year. It all starts with handling Okie State on Sept. 2nd. GO DAWGS

Go ahead Dawg fans and place your bets…but I don’t know too many teams who win the BCS title with four losses (USC, UT, AU, UF). But look at the bright side, you’ll more than likely beat Vandy and Kentucky this year.

There are so many factors that would have to fall perfectly into place for UGA to have a shot that it is almost ridiculous to talk about an NC at this point. Sure, we can hope but its just not very realistic to discuss it. Our talent is good, but there are no proven champion breed players and the proof of that is the off field behaviour by key “leaders” on the team. Stafford showed some moments of brilliance but was hugely over his head last year. Who knows if our recievers will catch the ball or not. Bobo will be great, but in his first real year as OC winning it all? Can we get by Vandy and Kentucky this year? Don’t scoff, Ky has a pretty damn good QB too, and they have no major expectations, which makes them very dangerous. I think we’ll stomp SC and the OBC, but there is that nagging feeling that they “could” pull off an upset. I’d really like to see us finally start beating the ones we should beat… soundly. I’d like to see us make the most out of our running backs… I think we leave a lot of 100 plus rushing games in the playbook. Then there is this tiny matter of the friggin gators owning us. I hate to sound like the voice of doom, but we have no business bragging about what we are “gonna do” til we get some basic things “done” first. Let’s see where we are after the Bammer game. I think we have a good chance to win 10 or more, or we could lose a couple that we shouldn’t and win 8. We just don’t have any foundation to justify predictions of much more at this point. After last year we just look stupid to talk about how great Stafford, Bobo, Lumpkin, Bailey, and the others are when all we’re counting on is their potential.

It’s a long shot, but if our O-line turns out to be good—-great, we might have a slim chance of getting through our schedule and have the luck of the BCS pick us. I do think we have the foundation for a Nat title team, but a lot of things have to go just right. I think Hunkerdown is pretty much right and UF is the monkey I want killed and off our back 1st!!!

well said Hunkerdown:

One can’t predict national championships in football because so much has to fall in to place.

Georgia has another strong squad and should be very competitive. There will be 3-4 very close games like always and we will just have to see what happens.

Chip, thanks for putting the Georgia off field problems in perspective. I understand some who post here believe that Smith, Hebron, Chandler, and Barnes, got what they deserved, but when you compare having a drink underage with the criminal activity among football players at Florida and elsewhere, it seems rediculous to even mention them as off field problems.

Hunk ERdown, I agree with everything you pointed out there but I think that one of the most important points you put out there pertains to the 100 yard rushers. We NEED THAT. That sets the tempo of the game and opens up the passing O like nothing else. It also helps to run the clock out too. We have been missing that part of the game for too long now. Last year we were talking up the RB’s and look what happened. Let’s keep it quiet this year and hope for better things.

June 13, 2007 3:59 PM | Link to this

I was going to write that, at best, the Georgia football unknows could be turned into an upset of LSU in the SEC title game and a BCS bid. But looking at this year’s schedule every game is winnable and USC (the real USC) is the only really scary team. 35-1 sounds about right though.

Hou Dawg

I’d blow a couple of hundred on the chance, with 30-1 odds given. I think about that Auburn game and say 12 games with that kind of effort and who knows… Problem is… I’ve been a Dawg fan for a lonnnggggg time and I know what the SEC is like.

Zoo-

I try to be careful in here about my feelings on the running game because so many folks want to see Matt sling it 50 times a game. But here’s the deal, they don’t realize how demoralizing it is to the opposition to know that just when they make the adjustments to stop a running game that resembles Patton’s tank division flying through Germany… thats when Matt can REALLY show his stuff. With a solid rush attack Matt can throw for more yards on far less attempts… I wish people could grasp that.

I-dog

I agree with you bro, but the truth is these guys could get away with a lot if they would be smart about it. They just can’t flaunt open containers like that. As I said on the other blog, and I’m very serious about it, this drinking age thing is gonna backfire when these kids start saying, if I have a few and do the right thing and walk back to the room I’m exposed for an hour walk and if I get caught I’m done on the team. If I go ahead and drive, its less than 10 minutes… my chances are better to drive. Nobody wants that to happen but the stupid rules force them to make stupid decisions.

I have to admit, I thought 35-1 was pretty good odds. As difficult as it is, and as many things have to bounce the right way, I would have thought the best team in the land only stood about a 10-1. One less holding call against Carolina last year would have taken Fl from 5-2 to 100-1 in a matter of seconds.

But we can all hope and pray that our Dawgs win the NC.

We have more wideouts that could see game action this year than at any time under Richt’s tenure.

Who will be our six most productive WR’s this year?

Of course Mikey Henderson, Mo Mass, and Bailey will be in most people’s top 3, but the next three are difficult to predict.

The next group might include Seniors AJ Bryant or TJ Gartrell (is TJ still with the team?)

Juniors Demiko Goodman and Kenneth Harris might be the ones to step up.

Sophmores Kris Durhman and Michael Moore might be the ones to push for playing time.

Or it could be Redshirt Freshman Tony Wilson or will true freshmen Walter Hill or Israel Troupe push up the depth chart and make an impact?

Who are the next three most productive Wr’s for UGA next year?

Hey I am impressed we got 35-1. I would have thought odds would have been higher. My idea of a great season would be 10-2 and that is if a lot of stars line up. Sure it is possible to go 10-2 but with the lack of game experience at so many positions, well we will just have to see.

No matter what, I think we will be fun to watch and we better not overlook the Cowpokes cause they are coming to win, not take the money and run like Steve Miller.

If given the chance Wilson, Durham and Bailey will be our most productive WR’s, also Na Derris Ward, Coleman Watson and Bruce Figgins could figure into this big time as Chandler sits for the first two games. They will have a chance to show that they are capable of being our starting TE. As for the OL that is not one of my concerns and we should be able to not only control the ball, but be able to score quickly from anywhere on the field both passing and rushing.

“No” we have not added Southern Cal to our schedule and “yes” that is a Gamecock fan spouting off on the Dawg’s blog. The deadline on fundraising for the Michael Lemon Fund is fast approaching (June 30) and they’re coming up short to date. As you’ll recall, the Bulldogs’ tight end lost his mother in a fire and they’re raising money for him and his 15-year-old brother. A big drive is going on in Oconee County on June 23 in conjunction with the Grace Shearon Foundation. You can also go through the UGA website at www.georgiadogs.com… .

Also, our old friend Leonard Pope is holding a fundraiser in Americus this weekend to benefit the Sumter Regional Hospital and victims of the recent tornadoes down there. There’s a golf tournament and basketball game and Pope is calling in his Bulldog buddies, including D.J. Shockley, Charles Grant, Thomas Davis, Randy McMichael and Danny Ware. Altamaha, forget “average” time for the Bugs to win a mythical national championship. Isn’t this the time of year for the Bugs to spout their mouths off about how they’re going to beat us this year? When are we going to start hearing about Bennett (overrated) or Choice (also overrated)? And where’s Lamecock Gary? Isn’t this his time of year? Because we ALL know he disapears at about the thrid weekend in September not to be heard from again until the next summer.

Look, I don’t think the Dawgs have a chance for the mythical national championship. Why? Because they’re not ranked high enough. Even if the Dawgs were to win the SEC this year, doing so undefeated is impossible. But unlike Florida from last year, the Dawgs are ranked too low to take advantage of finishing 12-1 (with the SEC Championship). So let’s say the Dawgs finish 12-1. Well, because they’re in the SEC, they should automatically be in the mythical national championship game, right? I mean, that’s what last year taught us all, right? Well, idiot northern writers never learn. So a 11-1 Michigan team will be SC’s, Texas’, or Louisville’s Big-11 sacrificial lamb instead. And when they get blown out yet again, maybe, just maybe, the idiot northern writers will learn. But I sincerely doubt it.

So no matter what, the SEC is always screwed.

I think it’s wayyyyy too early to start crowning these guys. Let them mature a little, get the experience, then make a run. I’m shooting for a top 8 finish this year, then the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP the next year.

Jason, yes next year, once again same ol story, we will all be hearing just how obsessed with the Dawgs you still are. And for goodness sakes, that little rant of yours can prabably be found verbatim about 20 times in here over the past couple of years. At least have something original to say. That “amazement” that you have over folks being obtimistic about thier favorite college team……Did you just cut and paste that? Try again. And What exactly qualifies somebody as a “moron” for being a fan of any particular team? I think if any disinterested third party were to read your post, it would pretty clear who the moron is. I can see about 4 things right off the bat in your post that are simply inaccurate. Its so much more of a slam when you actually hit the nail on the head.

Edward “most people” in here today ARE somewhat older than 27 yrs. You appearantly will be too in about 10 yrs. Pastures???? Oh man, thats what you came up with? Have you actually tried this before? I do appreciate you thinking we will keep our players out of jail thEn winning a title. Sounds good.

Ok. Actually a top 5 finish is what I’d like to see. Most importantly,I want to continue seeing the upward arc we’re going on, despite the recent problems.

We SEC’ns own 3 outta 9 BCS crystal footballs. Yeah, AU shoulda been the 4th. The reason 2008 will NOT field another piece of glass in a SEC trophy case is multiple choice :

A) We’ll beat each other’s brains out and no team finishes undefeated. B) The pretty boys from the upper East Coast and far West will blackball us. C) We, as a conference, are feared from sea to shining sea and must be put in our place. D) The sins of our fathers are ours to bear.

You flatter me…Are you a resident in hiding somewhere in NE..? Nonetheless, I wonder what odds Cousin Eddie gives the Cornhuskers to win the beauty contest in 2007…I gots a feeling about them corn fed boys this year. They may screw up and find themselves back in the National Spotlight…BTW, the Cornshuckers would like another game with Bobby ‘FSU ’ Bowden before he rides into the sunset…

Matthew Stafford is all we have. This guy has a bunch of nobody’s around him. The rest of this team sucks. This team is much worse than last year’s team. And can someone say Willie Martinez - one of the sorriest Defensive Coordinators in the country. As long as he’s still around Georgia will suck on defense. A new year comes around and most of you guys think that all of the sudden Georgia is full of great players and coaches who can win the big games. If the Dawgs can establish some offensive weapons for Stafford and a solid line and if Willie is fired and the defense can get some new stars, then MAYBE Georgia can look forward to a good year in 2008. But this year, wake the f#$% up!! I love the Dawgs, but damn, at least I’m realistic.

.

.

Item 1 : 9-4 is what we were last season when no poll ranked us at the end of the season except for the Final AP Poll and 9-4 will be again this season our record. We have no Defense for the 1st time in the Coach Richt Era of not having a Top 10 NCAA Total Defense.

Item 2 : We play the following teams already ranked in the preseason : Georgia Tech, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, and our bowl opponent. Clearly, Alabama is already better than they have been in recent memory and just as clearly Oklahoma State is a fine offensive team who figures to light up our 8 brand new never played before starters of the 11 we field in that game one. Kentucky is not a horrible team; Vandie, Ole Miss and Troy are not either, and all you have to do to see that we are capable of losing those type games, is look at last year where we lost to several such opponents doing nothing but turning the football over and not scoring touchdowns relying on a defense that ended in the Top 10 in the Nation in NCAA Total Defense that we do not have absolutely this season to rely upon.

Item 3 : We were 9-4 last season and will be again this season. This is not a better team than last season by a long shot. Every recruit in the nation knows this and that is why they all want to come here : to play and play early.

Item 4 :You are out of your mind if you think UGA is not in trouble with games against ranked teams today of Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and our bowl opponent.

Item 5 : Ranked preseason teams in one poll or another we face this season are SIX (6) RANKED teams this preseason in polls shown on the Average of All Preseason Polls. I suggest that we either beat 2 of those SIX RANKED teams, or 3 and stumble as we proved against one of the following SIX (6) NOT RANKED teams this preseason as we did TWICE last year : Oklahoma State, at Alabama, Ole Miss, Troy, Vandie or Kentucky.

Item 6 : The 13th game is Western Carolina, a team 7 games under .500 last season who did not play in one of the 58 bowl slots whom we play in Game 3 when we should have back some of the suspended/academically challenged players this off-season getting so much press.

Item 7 : There are 3 categories of opponents in our 13 games we play this season (1) Western Carolina in game 3 when our suspended players can beat up on them (2) The SIX (6) RANKED teams this preseason we will play this season and (3) The other SIX (6) NOT RANKED teams this preseason such as the 2 we lost to last season – some of which are very very very good.

Item 8 : When the season is over and the Final Polls out, which anyone in their right mind follows and keeps up with, Georgia – including our bowl opponent – will have played football games this season against 11 of the 13 opponents who played in a bowl game.

RambleON! Thanks for your honest opinion.

Huskdawg, I am not one of the stats people myself. They don’t mean a damn thing come game day anyway. I mostly keep an eye for some of those a-holes that come on here with nothing but stupid comments and bite back. These things also keep me posted as to what is going on since the SEC doesn’t exist up here. Although a lot of the maize and blue people were thrilled to see OSU get throttled. You won’t see me touting any players in the future either. I kinda jinxed Hebron by talking him up. I thought he was going to be the stand out this year and voiced my opinion a couple of times. So no more talking somebody up for me. Hope he does get it together, gets back to UGA and does what he was supposed to do.

For all you chumps and dolts out there that come on here with “beat Kentucky and Vandy first” the bell is ringing, recess is over now get back to class.

Cuz, I think OkState is coming to Athens to “shake some trees”.

Chip— NEWS FLASH “The Dawgs aren’t likely to win the national championship.” Boy, that took some real mental power to figure that out. Must be a slow news day. Go write something really constructive.

Bulldawg, you are obviously a South Carolina fan because you continuously referred to South Carolina as a “ranked” team. Yeah, the Cocks are ranked all right…#4, #5 or #6 in the SEC East, as usual.

Kalamazoo, I do agree and we have to hope our “O” just shakes a few more. I wouldn’t be surprised the see the over/under up some place around 60……ChampDawg, I also agree with you but I placed a $100 on the Dawgs because, for me, it’ll be fun to watch. Who knows, a little home entertainment!

What’s the PAC10 and BIG11 excuse for dodging a conference title game? Too tough a regular season? Or fear that attrition will keep them off the big stage? College football can stifle the calls for a playoff by mandating the conference title games. That’s the playoffs right there. No way USC gets 5-2 odds with the acid test at the end of the season.

Proof conference title games are absolutely necessary: Georgia Tech 2006. Could you imaging having to stomach GT calls that they deserved a BCS game becaues they had the best regular season record? But rightfully, Wake emerged as the true ACC champion and instead of the pomp and glory of the BCS Orange Bowl the jackets played in a half empty Gator Bowl, and lost.

austindog, I have always said that those guys need to have a conference title game to be legit. I agree with you that USC probably wouldn’t be the big dog it is if it had to go through its toughest opponent twice during the season which is always the possibility for an SEC team. Look at USC last year struggling with UCLA? The Big Ten’s excuse is that it can’t find a 12th team worthy enough. I totally disagree with that one. Since ND won’t do it, maybe steal a strong team out of the MAC.
