UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Tennis Dogs could be UGA’s best ever
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
They’ve asked me to blog throughout Georgia’s national championship match between the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs (31-0) and No. 10 seed Illinois (23-8). They’ve just gotten through with player introductions and the national anthem and the doubles team are warming up as we chat.
I ran into Allen Miller a few minutes ago. Miller, you may recall, starred on the 1985 Georgia national championship team. That squad, to date, has been considered the best Dogs’ tennis team of all time. But Miller told me if Georgia beats the Illini today, the 2007 team should take over that distinction.
“Because of what they’ve done over two years,” said Miller, who was also a doubles national champion in 1984. “They only lost one match in two years and that was in the national championship. Now I say that if they win tonight.”
We’ll see. I’ll be keeping you update throughout the evening.

jrm, All 3 doubles matches very tight. All 3 matches are on serve with courts 1 & 2 at 5-4 and court 3 at 6-5. Looks like doubles point could be decided by 1 or more tiebreakers.

GEORGIA WINS THE DOUBLES POINT! It was a tight one … again. No. 3 doubles of Nate Schnugg and jamie Hunt draws first blood with a 9-7 win. No. 2 doubles team of Travis Helgeson and Matic Omerzel clinches it. Helgeson, up 40-love, wins on service winner. John Isner and Luis Flores were tied with Illinois 7-7 and on serve when the match was suspended.
It was big for the Dogs. They’ve won the doubles point now in 31 of 32 matches. Illinois really wanted doubles just for momentum if nothing else.
Dogs got to singles looking for three wins.

I read in my local paper that SIX! Penn State players were arrested for Assualt and also burglary.
The article had little detail but made it sound like Joe Pa was going to handle it internally and with wind sprints etc… and that not a single one would miss a minute of action on the field.
Chip, this would certainly be interesting to know more about if that is indeed the case.
UGA suspends a highly recruited player for an entire season who got caught drinking twice and was not curteous to the bar staff. Penn State has six players arrested for REAL crimes and not one misses a game. Can this be true?

King won’t Red Shirt. Bobo will have a package of plays to get him on the field much like the Reptiles did with Harvin. My understanding, correct me if I’m wrong, is that he can catch the ball also. Brown won’t be ready and King has much to much talent to “Shirt”.

Yea, thats got to be a real bummer for all the rival fans in here who were pulling against a young man who worked hard to get himself into college, hoping a younster was in for trouble, and not going to do well in life. I’m sure that would have pleased them to have seen a person fail, so that their own lives could have been richer watching a game on TV.

Great news all around for UGA today, and only two days after the NC in men’s tennis! King will most likely play this year, and also a great start to the 2008 b-ball recruiting class. Now if only Felton could bring in forward Aminu and center Tony Woods, we’ll have a very formidable frontcourt for the future. Keep it going! GO DAWGS!!!!

Felton and the Dawg BB program seems to be really picking up. Picking up Trey was huge and shows that Felton can land the stars right here on Ga. I have a feeling we get a top 10 ranked basketball team in recruiting as well as make some noise in the tourney this year. Go Dawgs!
Also, welcome to the dawgnation TK. TK might not get as much press as Jarboe and Butler but TK is absolutley one of the best in Georgia and the country.

UGA better not redshirt King. The way I figure it, if it takes him 9 months to get his SAT score above room temperature, he’s only got one year of academic eligibility before he flunks out.

Dawg fans enjoy talking about past football glories, but the UGA tennis, golf and gymnastics teams are near dynasties which have earned far more and better coverage in the AJC. Chip’s coverage is a step in the right direction, but national titles in any NCAA sport deserve front-page coverage. As for the tennis team’s new title, congratulations, Dawgs. Be proud of your kids——that’s an undisputed championship won on the playing fields.

You got that right! I believe that Troupe will play as a true freshman and not have a “Shirt” put on him. Feel the same way about CK. Nothing has happened to change my mind and I’m sticking to my Feb. prediction of 10 true freshmen playing in ‘07.
By Matt
May 26, 2007 12:08 PM | Link to this
My fellow Georgia fans, King should and will redshirt. Its been well publicized that Richt & Co. put a premium on the blocking ability of their running backs. There is no way King has the kind of skills they will expect having sat out most of his senior year with a broken leg. Lets stop hyping the crap out of these guys. It does them no good.
By Buck Cochran in the NW
May 26, 2007 6:48 PM | Link to this
Matt, I’ll assume that you’re not referring to any of my posts when you talk about hype. On Bill’s blog I specifically said that CK would have to pick up the blocking part of the “O”. I don’t think anyone is adding any hype to these guys. As for myself, I think CK will play as a true freshman. I continue to hear and read about how many RBs we have then I start to count and guess what? We don’t have any depth at all. Lumpkin and Moreno are ready but Brown? No one knows what he’ll be able to do in ‘07. To come back from an injury like he had in a year doesn’t happen very often so we don’t know about Brown. Johnson and Chapus are gamers but don’t have nearly the speed or quickness that King has. To each his own in the opinion department, but IMO King nor Troupe will ” Shirt” in ‘07.

Back to the subject, John Isner lost an epic battle to Virginia’s Somdev Devarrman from India in the final. The Cav’s ace has beaten Isner twice now after losing to him three times this year. A win would have been frosting on the cake for this great Georgia squad, but it takes greatness for John just to make it to the final. Congrats to the Tennis Dawgs! It looks like we are starting good and hopefully will have a top five class in 2008. We can’t let Spurrier or Meyer keep having more success or we’ll eventually fall to the wayside. We’ve already had two decommit. How strong do you think each of these guys are? What are our other needs?
