UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Wanna see Dogs whip Gators?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia gets a lot of grief for losing to Florida so much in football and basketball, as it well should. But the two rivals compete in at least 20 sports year-round, and the Bulldogs more than hold their own. In fact, they often dominate.
Georgia fans can witness firsthand one sport in which the Dogs dominate the Gators at the NCAA Tennis Championships here in Athens tonight. The No. 1-ranked Georgia men open the tournament against Florida in the round of 16 at 6 p.m. on the Henry Feild Stadium Courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Dogs beat the Gators 6-1 (a relative butt-kicking in team tennis) in their only match this season back in March. However, the Gators have arguably the best player in the nation in freshman Jesse Levine. He’s undefeated and handed Georgia’s No. 1-ranked John Isner his only dual-match loss in two seasons in that match. So Isner will be looking for retribution.
Georgia’s women’s team is ranked No. 2 in the nation and Florida’s is ranked No. 4. The Lady Bulldogs met them twice this season, beating them both in the regular season and in the SEC Tournament championship match. The only way they can meet again would be in the national championship match on Tuesday.
Hey, I’m not naive. I know the majority of Georgia fans would rather their Dogs beat the Gators in football and men’s basketball every year and lose in everything else. But it is what it is at the moment in those sports and, like I said, these schools compete in everything all the time. Florida’s trying to win in those other sports, too, it just hasn’t been able to do it very often in tennis and a few other sports.
Meanwhile, as I tried to communicate in my story in this morning’s paper, if you’ve never seen a college tennis match or watched team tennis, you’re missing something. I’m a college football guy first and foremost and I’m here to tell you the NCAA Tennis Championships are one of my favorite events of all to cover. It’s easy to follow, fast-moving and, especially when the Bulldogs are playing, it’s an emotionally-charged, woof-fest.
So do I here any “seconds” out there? Anybody plan on going tonight? Or could you care less about Georgia tennis, even when it runs up against the Gators?

Hey, I’m with you. Beating Florida in anything is great feeling no matter what the sport. I too would rather see the “major” sports do better against Florida but I will take what we can get.Lets don’t get ahead of ourselves but our Tennis team has been dominating this year and it is a blast to watch live. Don’t forget about our Women’s gymnastics and golf teams also. GO DAWGS.

You’ve got a big “second” from me. The NCAA’s are a great event to watch (especially for a DAWG) & I can’t wait to take in some matches this weekend. For those who’ve never been — the atmosphere when UGA is playing is like nothing you will ever see anywhere else in tennis — blows Davis Cup away.

As much as I believe in the DAWGS, I cannot be motivated by anyone who references them as the “Dogs”. May it be football, basketball, tennis, or a spelling bee? The bell just doesn’t ring as loud when the person behind the words cannot devote enough allegiance to the mighty Red and Black known only as the Georgia Bull-“DAWGS”.

Thanks for taking time and space to give credit to the Tennis Bulldogs. You are so correct, Chip. The NCAA tournament is a really great event, even for the casual tennis observer.I have not been able to see this year’s edition of the Tennis Bulldogs, and am anxious to see the team. Any time a team can “run the table” during the regular season, they are special. I have heard and read that some have said this Bulldog team is one of the all time best. In light of the great Stanford,Southern Cal, and UCLA teams of past years, such adulation is amazing. Will be interested to see firsthand. I saw the Gator’s working out Monday evening, and they appeared sharpe. So it ought to be a great match.

Chip - As a UGA alumni and avid bulldog fan I have to say in regards to your article - What a complete and utter waste of words.
Football is the only sport that matters. Period. Arguing that UGA compares great across all athletics is fine - but don’t really bolster Dawg Nation in the thoughts that Tennis or Gymnastics matter in the grand scheme of college sports.

Yeah I love football more than most people. During the fall I devour everything I can about the Dawg football team. Sure this is what makes the money that supports the rest of the teams. But there are plenty more student atheletes at UGA and UF that play other sports. Not to give them credit, when credit is due would be just wrong. So yes, I congradulate and am proud of our top ranked gymnastics team, tennis teams and want to party with the golf team. Give these other atheletes their props. In the words of soul queen Aretha Franklin;

However, thanks for either owning property or vacationing in Florida. The State and locals love taking your tax money and your out of town dollars from you to invest in their economy.
But what the locals REALLY love is the fact that you have to return to this miserable state to live….and you like it! WTF?
Btw, why do you have a condo in ‘Flawrida’ when you hate it so much? Typical ‘DAWGG’ dumbazz.

If wins in minor sports can sooth Jawja’s pain of losing to the Gators in football and men’s basketball, that’s OK with me. By the way, how are Jawja’s tractor pull and bass fishing teams doing this season? If you’re not a Gator, you’re Gator bait.

I’m a Bulldog for life and I have the answer to their problem with the Gators! The Gators, Florida State and Miami beat them in they own territory They recruit SOWEGA offensive players when Ga only wants the ATL players who usually get in don’t know how to fight because they are wild dumb azz(Want To Be Thugs) City boys or preppy White Boys!! The only SOWEGA players have been on defense and Hines WARD and Leonard POPE this is FOOTBALL country not NORTH GA just look at the schools in SOWEGA Thomas County Central Cario, LOWNDES county AMERICUS-Sumter, Mitchell-Baker, Dougherty, Monroe, Westover, Miller County, Fitzgerald, Tift county, Colquit County, Crisp County, Bainbridge, Brooks County, Cook county Early County, Thomasville High, Randolph-Clay,and Last but not least the team with the most National Titles VALDOSTA hell they even better in Basketball look at Mitchell-Baker and Randolph-Clay two of the best in any Classification hands down!!!! But i do Mark Richt credit by him being at Florida State he knows this and has opened some doors but it’s hard cause UGA Sold out for so long!!! I know a lot of you are mad at this but the truth hurts just look who wins the championships year in year out Region 1 is the toughest from 1A to 5AAAAA in order to win you first, have to know how to win and winners don’t come from SouthWest Dekalb etc. want to be’s do even your Norcross and parkviews they are spoonfed they don’t have that s** it takes They aint GO GETTERS

To all the immature gaytor posters. You had the same type of football season this past year that we had in 2002. The difference: USC chokes vs UCLA while Miami held on to beat VA Tech.
Congrats.
Now, how many times in the past 5 years have your beloveds played in the GA Dome for the SEC title ? once
How many times has UGA been in that game in the past 5 years ? three times
How many SEC titles for each in the past 5 years ? one for you, two for us
After we whip you this year, the last 4 years will be split 2 and 2. Even a gaytor ought to be able to do that math. It is still very much a rivalry that we still own head to head.

Funny how the GAY-tor fans think we are rednecks. Northern Flori-DUH is nothing but rednecks and southern Flori-DUH is nothing but old people and Yankees. Who the hell wants to go there? Last time I was at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, we did an actual ” mullet sighting contest ” and the GAY-tor fans one easily with a ratio of 3 to 1.
Yeah you guys have owned us the past decade but let’s not forget, we shoulda won at least half of those games and your Nat’l Title team from last year needed a fumble return for a TD to hang on and we spotted you 14 pts. Also, say what you will but every year it’s a home game for ya’ll and we still own Flori-duh in the overall series by a significant margin.
We gotcha this year. Paybacks are a b***.

By logical progression by the posts by Gator fans on this blog, any other student athelete besides a football or basketball player at UF has to sit in the back of the bus. Evidently all non-football and basketball scholarship atheletes should leave and don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out. Yeah that is alot of class.

UGA fans here have nothing but MORAL victories to talk smack about and how they will beat UF this year. Wow that sounds familiar. We ARE THE NATIONAL CHAMPS. WHo cares what your 2002 record was you were not THE CHAMPS. WHo cares about the DOME because have been there 3 times as many as UGA. We have dominated the SEC ALL-SPorts rankings for 20 years so yes we own you as an overall athletic program. Correct me if I am wrong, but UGA is playing UF in tennis tonight, not Vandy or Kentucky. They beat us in football also. So Michael, that is why Chip puts out a blog topic about UGA playing UF in tennis instead of another SEC school. Sounds kind of reasonable to me. Sounds also from the report that UF has a pretty good player and that he should be exciting to watch. Sure I prefere football, but I pull for all UGA sports teams. I expect no less from alums from other schools.

Your right Gainesville sucks so much that it was just named the #1 place to live in the country. The Gators suck so much that they have won the last 3 major sports titles in a row and have more overall (all sports combined) SEC titles than any other school. The Gators are so bad compared to UGA they have beaten them 15 of 17 times. UF fans are such rednecks and uneducated that UF ranks higher than UGA in just about EVERY academic category by US news and World report and is the #2 ranked public school by Kiplingers. Tebow has such a bad arm that he set almost every PASSING record in the State of FLORIDA. UF has NO talent at all that they have been ranked in the top 2 in the last 2 recruiting seasons. Florida has so many thugs that UGA players have ten times more arrest in the last 5 years. Florida sucks and has no history because UGA owns the overall series lead even though you have to be over 50 to have seen a winning record vs. UF in your lifetime.
You guys are right UF is awful.

AltamahaDawg, go watch your tennis team practice. You know damn well you UGA fans only care about beating the Mighty Gators. In any sport. Now thats TYPICAL. From tennis to football. It seems you guys all come out of the wood work when you’re facing UF. I’m not sitting here arguing semantics with you. You know exactly what I was talking about.

Cuz, either you want your tennis team to win or you don’t. I would think that having recent success in the major sports I’d be that much more interested in the second tier. I think the problem is that the majority of those so called gator fans that actually are lame enough to hang out in a UGA blog, really can’t relate to an actual college affiliations. Sorry being a punk growing up in the 90’s thinking it was cool to pull for somebody not the local team doesn’t count.

UGA has as many wins vs. UF in the last 17 years as the Gators have won National Titles in that time.
You guys should stick to talking smack to Tech and keep your mouths shut when it comes to the NATIONAL CHAMPS.

UFowns I’m sorry but hanging out in a UGA is not the same as being a UGA fan, just doesnt work that way. Its obvious you want to be, but its just not that simple.

And yet Michael you have wasted your late hour in a UGA blog, hmmmm, how odd.
As to the article topic, Either your earlier point was rediculous or you are a lair. Simple, not semantics.
For the record I am not as simpleminded as you perhaps as I care about beating at least 2/3 other SEC teams equaly as much depending on the situation.
Bottom line, I woudlnt be caught dead In a UF blog talking rediculous crap like you, if we had beaten you guys 20 yrs in a row.

Every comment you make is about how we’re in the UGA blog. WHO GIVES A DAMN. Beat us in realy sports. Period. Then talk sh**. Is this all you do all day? Must be nice. I guess since I pointed out the FACTS that you guys have nothing in REALITY to talk smack about to us Gators you resort to calling me a bandwagon Gator and crying about how many UF fans are on a UGA blog.
Im a 3rd generation Florida Graduate, something I GUARANTEE you 99% of you UGA fans here can not say about UGA just like 99% of you here have not had a winning record in your lifetime as far as UGA vs. UF
Atlanta has the largest out of state UF alumni base. The AJC is our “hometown” newspaper. When they put a tagline on the frontpage of AJC.com saying “Wanna see UGA whup the Gators” its going to attract attention.
Whats real funny is this premonition is just like every year in football when you idiots talk about how you will beat UF only to go home with your collective tails bewteen your legs. Guess you will never learn.
Just look at how many UGA fans here are already penciling in a win vs. UF like every year. Hows that been working out for ya. Let me ask you fools something, what really makes you so confident? Florida has more talent is better coached and has certainly had a mental edge for some time. These things are FACTS.
Your assumptions are moronic and each and every year make your WHOLE fanbase look foolish.

AltamahaDawg, For the sake of it all, I hope you aren’t as stupid as you sound, cause you have no clue as to what you are talking about… I have been a Gator fan for 30+ years, living in the great state of Florida until recently moving up here… Through the good times they have had and are having to the times that weren’t as good, always sporting my orange and blue with pride, never once wavering… So until you can say you have heard me boo my team, and you never will, talk some smack about something you might actually have a clue on…

For what it’s worth, Georgia won the doubles point and has won the first set at No. 5 singles. Nos. 1, 2 and 3 are on serve and the Dogs are up a break at 4 and 6. Looking pretty good for Georgia so far.

Can’t say I’m sorry to hear UGA lost Paul Oliver, but I am sorry for Oliver…He stepped up his game during last season. I’ll give him credit for his determination (After UT )…Now if CoUTu wants to join him in the supplemental, please don’t hesitate…

For what it’s worth (not that any of you are truly interested in facts), UGA has won a total of 24 national championships in it’s history, 14 since 1999. UF has won 27, only 6 since 1999. So, who has enjoyed the greater success in recent years? ‘nuf said.

To all FU fans, we knew you are good in only one thing, Bull#%!^. Be prepared to suck yours and your coach balls when UF lost to UGA this year, in football that is. Your people acts like the King of the world, don’t you think UF will lose sometimes? It will be sooner than you think!!!

uf owns uga, ajc is your hometown newspaper as a gator? you are a tool. You obviosly have an internet connection and could go post on a UF board but once again you dont. Uf fans that come on here just show how useless thier lives really are. We dont hate florida fans because of the record. we hate you guys because of this right here. Look and see if any other schools fans come on here to talk trash. you dont see it. learn some class florida fans. Ill say it again, you guys should go play in the ACC where you belong.

This is hilarious… Any florida fan that comes on here and says that other sports do not matter is laughable. Besides the fact that the national champions beat georgia this year by only ONE touchdown and a mysterious “facemask” i wouldnt be so quick to blow sunshine up your own asses. Next year should be different considering tebow is a fullback and not a quarterback. go dawgs
