UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Richt, Stafford to discuss keg photos
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
By now, I imagine everybody in the Bulldog Nation has heard something about the keg incident involving Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. If not, here it is in a nutshell:
Circulating on the Internet are photos of the Bulldogs’ 19-year-old star lifting a beer keg over his head and generally clowning around with a beautiful young woman and another unidentified guy. Supposedly the pictures were taken during a NASCAR race at Talladega.
Now nowhere in these photos is it clear that Stafford is drinking beer (though he’s clearly having a good time). And, as one Georgia official pointed out to us, the fact that he’s picking up the keg over his head in one of the pictures indicates the keg is likely empty (not sure if that is a good thing or not).
In any case, the Bulldogs already are likely going to lose for the season one potential starting player in redshirt freshman linebacker Akeem Hebron) due to two arrests for underage drinking. So the surfacing of the pictures of Stafford are badly timed and it’s certainly not good PR for the star QB to be seen horsing around with a keg.
Here’s what we know for sure: Head coach Mark Richt, in Jacksonville Thursday night with several other coaches speaking to the Bulldog Club there, is aware of the situation and plans to talk to Stafford about it. That’s what team publicist Claude Felton, also in Jacksonville, told our Carter Strickland. We’ll probably follow up on this on Friday.
My question to you folks is this: How should Richt handle this? Should Stafford be punished? If so, in what way, shape or form? Suspended? Or should it be ignored completely?

Coach Rick needs to pull the young stud aside and let him know that he needs to be more discreet in his activities. Rich needs to tell the stud that if he is going to mount HOT college chicks, he needs to keep it at the safehouse

Ubiquitous digital photography and the ease of making infinite, free copies of photographs that can be sent anywhere and stored permanently is going to get us all in trouble at some point in the internet age. Let’s hope that includes as few Dawgs as possible. Let’s make a deal: if anyone takes pictures of partying with Matthew Stafford, don’t put them on the internet.

Who cares? He’s in college and aloud to have fun. Only a naive person thinks kids wait until 21 to start drinking alcohol. Just because he is holding an empty keg doesn’t mean he is going to show up to games drunk. I say, ‘No harm… no foul!’

“Should Stafford be punished? If so, in what way, shape or form? Suspended? Or should it be ignored completely?”….uh, how about neither. How about we try this. Coach Richt tells him to be careful what he does, who he hangs out with, and what he does in front of a camera. Be careful and stay out of trouble. 9 out of 10 males who ever went to college drank beer…big freakin’ deal. He was doing what we all have done or would like to have been doing when we were that age.

I think Chip Towers failed to mention in his article that University of Georgia campus rules and Athens Clarke County laws are not enforcable in Alabama, or anywhere else outside of Clarke County (unless of course Mike Adams thinks his job as UGA President gives him the moral authority to approve or disapprove of people’s behavior regardless of where they are. Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown said it all. Seriously, I didn’t play QB and Georgia and scored a lot of HOT chicks there….let this kid (QB stud) grow up and have some room to experience college without some tech grad following him around with a camera phone in total awe. Life is hard enough when you grow up, give him the chance to make the mistakes we all have made. Food for thought…Tech 20 percent female, UGA 60 per cent. I am no mathematician, but I do believe this is the real cause of all this jealously and abuse of camera phones.

Pleassssse. If Stafford was a third team linebacker Saint Richt would kick him off have a press conference to boast how he instills dicipline and will not tolerate team rules being broken. But since it involves Stafford his prized quarterback. Saint Bobby Jr. will have a discussion make him only consume one cookie at night instead of two and that will be it.

These AU coeds were just clowning around until somebody thought it would be an embarrassment to the kid and to UGA…and a Florida guy I know is claiming that Stafford is such a poor student he’ll only last one more season anyway…point being, if they can’t beat him they’ll try to hound him out. And gee, I wonder if Mark Richt did any underage drinking at the UofM?

If you are a college kid and you have friends, chances are you have engaged in some underage drinking. Why should one kid be held to a higher standard just because he can throw a football? He needs to make sure people keep the cameras away the next time he goes out drinking, but other than that, lay off the guy, it’s not that big of a deal. Oh well. All I can think while reading the spew flowing from the mutts is… If that had been Taylor Bennet, Tashard Choice, Kenneth Wheeler or some other Tech starter in that pic, you no-class dog fans would be all over Tech about their “under-age drinking” issues. Let’s face it, UGA has so much of a drinking problem it cost a student his life here not too long ago. So, yes, Stafford was drunk off his gord and we all know it. You just want to be tolerant of it because this was your prize pooch caught in an embarrasing moment… not to mention passing out while cuddling with another man (that’s just priceless). Now, I do not condone drinking at all especially by underage persons (at Tech, UGA or otherwise). As a paramedic I have seen, all-to-often, the results of alcohol use/abuse. It is never good. If you were true fans of an otherwise great school (not just fans of braggin’ rights) you would hold Richt accountable to treat Stafford appropriately. And YES, the UGA rules DO apply off campus and out of state. When you represent your school (plese note the Georgia Champions logo on his T-shirt) you fall under their rules. Stafford is just another high-profile punk who thinks his celebrity status will get him a free pass. And sadly, he is right. UGA history proves the little guy is made into an example and the important players have their infractions overlooked. Just watch how Akeem Hebron is handled v/s Stafford. Get over your “Stafford did nothing wrong” attitude and show some integrity. Obviously no one wearing a UGA jersey knows what integrity is.

This kid is entering his sophmore year in college. What has he done wrong? Leave him alone, and let him learn from this. Richt should certainly talk to him for purely percautionary reasons and perhaps warn him that, because he is Mathew Stafford and Georgia’s starting quarterback, eyes are constantly upon him. However, it should stay within the family. Given today’s world of digital cameras, the internet and sports blogs, everything these guys do is public. I really feel for him, because from what I see, he has done nothing wrong. Because of today’s environment and access to the internet, people like Matt Stafford do not get to enjoy the college experience in a social context. It is unfortunate, but true. For those of you in the future who might happen to see one of these young men and think it might be cool to “get a picture to show your friends you partying with” a certain athlete, please realize once you put it on the internet, you have published to the entire world and loose control of the context in which it is disseminated. Matt Stafford is an extraordinarily gifted athlete, who makes a big difference in our teams quality. It would only hurt our team and our fan base if he misses the Oklahoma State game because someone wanted to show friends they were with Matt Stafford at a Nascar race.

Let’s see. He’s a kid in college who’s at a NASCAR race with a young hottie. I’d be worried if he weren’t having fun. Just because he’s a QB doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a life. We don’t all go to Prince Ave. Baptist Church.

This is the problem with society today. Stafford gets tanked and is viewed as “just a kid having fun.” Calvin Johnson admits to smoking marijuana, it is ignored and he still goes #2 in the draft. I think it is embarassing that these “kids” (from UGA AND Tech alike) are allowed to get away with whatever they want as long as they get the “W” for the “team.” It is sad to see that as a whole, fans are willing to look beyond destructive behavior just for “braggin’ rights.” We wink at criminal behavior and even elevate it to glamorous in some cases. Well, I guess the mentality is as I have stated… “Whatever it takes to get the “Win.” If you are willing to think that way, then stand proud. I don’t understand it myself, but if it’s that important to you then so be it. I know the opinion of one person won’t change a thing, but it is my opinion and of that I will stand proud (as opposed to the glorification of criminal behavior.) I will be a fan of Tech4Ever but I will NEVER glorify the behavior of anyone on any team (Yes, even Tech…) that is criminal and more importantly, destructive. Have a great day… Thanx for the debate.

Hey, Brian. Yeah, a “real” championship won courtesy of fluke play versus Florida, a squeaker over a mediocre Notre Dame (that couldn’t even beat Tech) and a tainted SEC title that was the result of a watered-down schedule that did not include games against the 2nd, 3rd and 4th-place teams in the conference — including LSU and Alabama. Congrats on that.

The only reason this is an issue is because of the recent alcohol issues with the UGA football team. You really cant accuse the kid of drinking. Why is it that every discussion of UGA football is interrupted by some lame UF fan. Why don’t you Gators discuss the photos which surfaced of Tim Tebow partying and trying to stick his tongue in some other dude’s ear. The Great Tebow was obviously smashed in these photographs as he partied with several other drunken gators. Oh by the way, the FL Attorney General just dropped charges against a FL Gator player. Of course he did, that’s the way they work things in Gainesville. Every Gator player involved in everything from drugs to assualts are eventually determined to be innocent. Just like O.J.

Minor beer-related event causes coach to call the sophomore 5-star quarterback to the straight and narrow. He’ll be made to toe the line. He’ll have nothing to keep himself occupied except football. This whole thing with Matt Stafford is a result of poor judgment from quite a few people, but it certainly not worth all the hype it is receiving. Remember “judge not lest ye be judged.” I pay my money every year because I trust CMR to handle this in the wise and fair manner he always does. Tech and Florida and any other team can stop pointing fingers at Stafford or UGA because your programs have had kids who have done similar things or worse. How quickly the Techies forget their recent Clavin Johnson, “I smoked pot” statement and the games forfeited for kids not attending classes. This is not the first problem any of us will have. Remember these guys are still kids in many ways.

Staff just needs to learn that he is basically a celebrity and needs to guard against sensational media. We live in an age where the media will spin anything they can get(LIKE THIS) so just be careful of giving them the ammo. He is a college football player. He is in his early 20’s. He can have a keg if he wants to. He was not on school property. He was not at a school event. It’s none of UGA’s business what he does on his own free time. This country is getting out of hand delving into people’s personal liberties. We are resticting more and more rights of individuals and it is time to stop and look at the big picture.
Was he hurting anyone? Was he drinking and driving? Was he doing this at a UGA event? The answer is no. Move on!
If UGA loses him over this, it is their loss. He should switch schools and go somewhere where more important things matter.

Word of mouth is a powerful tool. However, if I hadn’t seen this story on AJC, I wouldn’t have even known about this incident so common as this one is among college students. I’ll bet that some of Stafford’s peers at UGA and in other colleges would not have been able to lift an empty keg, let alone a full one. They would have been too drunk.
It has been a long time since I ordered beer as I never liked the taste of the stuff when I was Stafford’s age. Do they serve it in styrofoam cups with plastic lidss and straws? While I don’t drink alcohol I do associate with people who do. I don’t recall ever seeing anyone drink beer with a straw?
Do you suppose that Stafford thought these pictures would be posted on the Internet and be singled out by AJC? If he was naive, he isn’t anymore.

I got real good money that says nothing is done. Suspending backup OL, other players where you have more than enough depth to cover up the absence, that’s one thing. MR can appear to play hardball and send his messages through those kids in those positions. The poster child, front man of your program, MR doesn’t carry enough mustard to throw down a suspension in this case, although it is deserved. Look at the past, tells the whole story.

…and this is the result of all you bozos out there who support the 21 National Minimum Drinking Age. GMAFB.
Before some MADD mother joins the conversation, the reason fatalities went down after 21 was because of the GenX baby bust, not 21. The number of 16-20 year olds ever born went down faster than the “alcohol-related (sic) fatalities”.

Want a beer? Gonna have to work for it. Call your congressman (at the federal level; the drinking age is still infinity in this state on Sunday). Doug B, the drinking through the straw works like this. Obtain a large drink cup from Mickey D’s, Speedway etc. Kinda like the one pictured. Preferrably one of the white ones you can’t see through. Drop a tall beer can inside, cover with ice, put the lid on, insert straw and drink. Looks like a fountain drink. You can also hide jewerly and a pitbull in there too but only if you play QB for the falcons.

Tech4ever…your comments have to be some of the most asinine thoughts to ever be penned to paper, or in this case, an internet blog. It’s pretty clear from the pictures that Stafford is not drunk. As a paramedic, you should be able to tell that. And he wasn’t “passed out”, although the other guy may have been, because you can easily tell Stafford is making fun of the guy and is smiling in the picture.
It all boils down to this…the kid didn’t do anything to get into trouble. You are letting your hatred for Georgia obscure any attempt at logical reasoning. I don’t care if you ever drank in college or not…it doesn’t matter whether you are a Hindu holy man or a damn Quaker. You cannot allow your personal convictions to dictate if anything is wrong in this situation. Stafford DID NOT get arrested, Stafford is NOT pictured doing anything illegal, and there is NOT even any evidence that Stafford drank a drop…though I certainly would have, and did, at 19 years old. I honestly find it unfathomable that this type of generic college picture could generate this kind of response and take up space on AJC’s site. Anyone vilifying Stafford for something so trivial should step away from the computer and get a life.
Lastly Tech4ever, I found it deeply disappointing that someone deemed you fit to be a paramedic. Knowing that my life could potentially be in the hands of someone so skewed in their outlook on life (and obviously lacking in intellect) has darkened my day much more than any photographs of “college kids being college kids” ever could.

The only reason this is causing a stir is because sub-par newsoutlets like the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation make it an issue. I was at the Dawg Days event last night here in Jacksonville and CMR eluded to the Stafford photo when speaking about the fact that one of the toughest things is keeping track of all the players and making sure they don’t mess up or break any rules. He mentioned that it’s hard enough being an 18-22 yr old in college, away from home for the first time, now add a bit of celebrity and people following you around just waiting for a moment (like Stafford holding a keg over his head)to catch you in the act of doing something even remotely wrong. I think we all need to put it into perspective. It’s easy to sit back and criticize, but how many of us would have been in trouble or embarrassed if we had people following our every move and just waiting to catch a glimse of us doing something wrong? Hopefully it’s a good wake up call for all the Dawgs to watch their backs and be very careful about what, where, and who they are doing things at/with. Unfortunately, they just have to realize that they have to think not only about the consequences of their wrong actions, but also whether or not a perfectly legal action can be viewed as as suspect or damning in the court of public opinon.

Poor, pathetic GT haters. Riled by images of a Georgia college kid having fun. These images must be fake! College kids, horsing around, evidence of beer drinking? Life fun? This shatters everything GT parents taught their obedient children.
And even worse? This kid will make more in one year than an engineer will make in his lifetime.

The ONLY blog I saw which made sense was Dave’s, who said the drinking age should go back to 18. At 18 an American man or woman is considered to be a legal adult. They can sign and be obligated to a contract, and they can go off to war and be wounded or killed fighting for our country. How ludicrous and hypocritical and inconsistent, and in fact, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, is it then, for this same American legal adult not to be allowed to drink alcoholic beverages, which ARE LEGAL. The drinking age was 18 for what, 50 years? And EVERY Georgia player could drink during those times, and did anything worse than today happen then? I would bet that 90% of every UGA players drank as 18-year olds, and they drink today. And they are productive, contributing members to society AND to the UGA football program.
The real problem is the artificially-high drinking age. It needs to go back to 18. We would save billions of dollars on not having to prosecute these cases of underage drinking. God knows we can always prosecute drunkeness at any age, as we do now. But putting people in jail, with all the ramifications and costs, for drinking a beer when they are legal adults?! If a parent wants their child how to learn to handle something potentially dangerous, like guns or alcohol, etc., you don’t prohibit it or keep it from them. You show them how it works and you teach them how to use it safely, and how to be responsible, and you establish and maintain high standards of use for the product. This is what parents did for a couple of hundred years and it worked fine then.
Bottom line is this: IF we trust our 18-year old American adults to sign a contract and go to war and enroll in college and play sports on TV, then shouldn’t we trust them to drink responsibly. In EVERY case in EVERY matter, when you demand and raise the level of standards and expectations about how we want our young people to behave, they respond in a positive way every time. Let’s go back to doing that with allowing 18-year olds to drink.
Of course, then what would we have to waste our bloggin’ time on?

Is this newsworthy? Not in the real world. In the politically correct, government is good so more government is better world, the 21 Drinking Age is a holy writ.
Look at that kid out in Winder who died—if there wasn’t the possibility that alky-hol was involved, it would have been below the fold on the first day and gone the next.
Not all laws are created equal. Some are more equal than others.
Clip and save: If you need to call the cops, for whatever reason, mention that there’s “underage drinking” going on if you want a quicker response. It’s like a code word with them to get the lead out.
Of course, I should really encourage the pro-21 crowd to keep it up, as they’ve gotten to the point that they’re really overplaying their hand and making complete @$$es out of themselves.

A) Jerry Falwell B) Quakers C) A bitter Tech fan D) A Hindu holy man E) Carrie Nation F) A Baptist, but only when asked with no liquor store in sight G) Anyone else who thought Prohibition was a “good idea”
I think that about does it…and considering Stafford is not the starting quarterback for Liberty University, and Carrie Nation is long dead, it doesn’t really matter what any of these people think.

Another UGA graduate cannot do the math. 1 Title for UGA in 1980, and 4 for GT and the most recent 1990. Would we expect less? No.
UGA and NASCAR go together and just another reason GT and other competing schools continue to land better recruits. Strange GT can keep their house in order, but UGA can’t.

I have to side with Cdawg. Tech, UF, UT, USC and AU are just killing us in recruiting and all the recent drinking scandals are causing too large of a distraction. We have no focus or leadership.
I am sick and tired of being associated with a program, which has won only 1 national title since the program started, and season after season is just average. Even GT has 4 titles and are landing larger recruits!!
We lose to UF, UT, Vandy and KY last year, and now this year our QB is lifting kegs above his head and we just cannot get focused.

Ga. QBs spooning together. How sweet. Ha.
Another off-field Hallmark moment for the Ga. football program. Lots of those, as always.
Chubby Stafford is out of his league with the girl. Maybe he impressed her with recitations of how many INTs he threw last year.
As much as everything about UGA pretty much sucks, must this be a news story? A college kid drinking? Really? That happens? Yes, it’s yet another embarrassment for UGA, but they’re used to that. The big deal is not that he’s drinking an adult beverage, it’s that a girl that beautiful would cozy up next to those armpits.

Mike,
I know as a Georgia hater, that this is what you really want to believe. It just isn’t true.
Richt has suspended players that we need badly. The dawgs could sure use Ian Smith at some point in the next 6 games, but he won’t play because of DRINKING. Not assault, not rape, not drugs… having too much to drink and getting caught.
Hebron isn’t a 3rd string lb. He may or may not have started the first game for UGA (if he hadn’t been suspended), he would have definately played a significant role.
What exactly would you suspend Stafford for? Holding a metal object? Smiling too much? Which football program would suspend ANY player let alone their starting QB for doing this?
Richt doles out the punishment on a consistant basis. Richt made a mistake in not being tougher on Odell Thurman (IMO) but other than that, he has been very consistant, no matter who it is.
It is interesting that Calvin Johnson admits to smoking pot (which is a crime for anyone no matter the age in this country) but he is considered a “goody two shoes”. Someone takes a picture of Stafford holding a keg of beer and it is a news story??
What percentage of college students have never touched a keg of beer? 2%? David Pollack, is the only one I know of.
I have nothing against CJ from Tech, but ANY Tech fan getting on Stafford for something like this is a hypocryte.

If Coach Richt plans on speaking to Stafford, then he should probably kill 2 birds with 1 stone and speak to the whole team. Matthew’s not the first player to have pictures published over the internet indicating that he drinks under age….Trust me, I’m a student at UGA and I’ve seen first hand that it’s a situation that Richt needs to handle with the entire team and not just one person, regardless of their position.

GA VA HOKIE:
You have to be kidding me, right???
Your comparing Michael Vick taking drugs and paraphanalia through the AIRPORT SECURITY CHECKPOINT! (As a multi-millionaire adult) with a Freshman college kid getting his picture taken holding a keg of beer?
How do you know he was drinking? OK In reality, we can pretty much assume he was… but you can’t suspend someone because you think he might have had a beer off campus in a different state??
What if David Pollack had lifted an empty keg just for fun and asked his buddies to take a picture. Here is a guy who didn’t have a sip of alchohol or have sex in college (I can’t imagine that, but I respect his discipline). Would you suspend him along the lines of “he must have been drinking underage, he was holding a keg”
Vick and his brother have been in trouble OVER AND OVER again. Its a little different.

Who cares solely on the basis of “it’s against the law”? Yes, there are some good laws—don’t bother calling me an anarchist or some other non-argument—but the ol’ OCGA and USC need a good housecleaning. Until then my respect for the law has its limits. Just because it’s in the OCGA or USC doesn’t mean it’s not BS.
Remember, this is the state where it used to be a felony for your lawfully married wife to do a Monica Lewinsky on you. People went to jail because of it, even into the 1980s. Look it up!

It is easy to make racial allegations with no facts to support them.
Did you know that 1/2 the players suspended for games at UGA this fall are White? Do you know how many white players have been suspended for games in Richt’s tenure? If you don’t, how can you make such a claim.
In my opinion, the only player that Richt has been soft on with Discipline is Odell Thurman. Do you know what color he is?
Lets take it a step further. How many major Universtities in this country can say that they have had multiple head basketball coaches who are black. Multiple starting QB’s (Shockley, Quincy, Ward, Johnson, Jackson) and an African American Athletic Director?
I can’t think of another school that can make that claim. Michigan? Florida, Georgia Tech?
If you have any allegations that have substance… feel free to post them.

I- dog, that was the dumbest rebuttle to a statement i have ever heard. First of all Vick has NEVER been arrested of anything, including so-called “taking drus and paraphanalia through an airport security checkpoint.” Second of all Vick is an Adult who is old enough to make his own decisions without an arse like you telling him what to do. Now i dont give a damn about a college student having sex or drinking because i did those things myself. But, the fact remains that Stafford is still underage and if you do the crime and get caught you do the time.

I wasn’t making any racial allegations about how Mark Richt handles his team. I am talking about public opinion when it comes to situations like this. I have read enough of these type blogs to form my opinion, and in my opinion, if this player were not white, half of these people on this blog that are making excuses for him, would be throwing him under the bus and calling him a thug. If you don’t believe me, you are not living in the same world I am.

Nope, not a racist, and actually I don’t think this should even be in the news. I have been on here stirring up trouble to make a point. Stafford is an adult too…age of majority in AL and GA is still 18 regardless of the drinking age. Drinking doesn’t make you an adult, and the drinking age doesn’t make you a minor.
I’d have no problem with the “do the crime-do the time” argument if so many stupid things that aren’t of anyone else’s concern weren’t illegal!

Hey Marbo, Holding a keg over your head does not prove that any drink was taken from said keg. Its not illegal to hold a beer keg over your head no matter what your age. Get your facts straight before you state things about being “underage”.
There was no ‘crime’ so there is no ‘time’ to do. The rest of you tightwads need to relax and quit trying to make college kids into compliant drones that do no wrong and only do what they are told. College is about learning and having fun. Relax a bit and leave the boy alone.

Here’s something for all the righteous, perfect people who didn’t drink underage, but are ready to demand the suspension of Stafford, to think about: In those pictures, the guy who’s passed out on the ground (whom Stafford is spooning — as much as it disappoints me to say) is ALLEGEDLY backup No. 2 QB Joe Cox. Now, if he’s passed out on the ground, one can only logically assume that he’s drunk as well. Should Richt suspend, or take some harsh disciplinary act, or even just talk, to him as well? After all, if he’s passed out like that on the ground, he MUST be drunk, right? (sarcasm intended)
Note the use of the word ASSUME above, just like everyone is assuming that just because Stafford is hoisting a keg and spooning the guy that he is drunk.

You must not understand what I am trying to say. I don’t care if the dude was drinking or anything, and I really don’t care that he was white. As I said before, the point I am trying to make is about public opinion when people get in trouble. Believe me, I don’t back down from anything, so we can go at this all day, but it is pointless because you think I don’t like white people. I don’t really care what race you are…I just so tired of the whole race card being played regardless of the situation. Did anyone say anything about race when Calvin Johnson made his pot smoking comment…NO!!!! Also, all the UGA fans I know root for the players on our team regardless of color, and last time I checked the black players on our team far outnumber the white. We revel in their accomplishments and disappointments without worrying about their race. Yeah, there are those exceptions, but you have those at any college or organization and it is done by all races. If you recall, one of most beloved Bulldogs, # 34, Herschel Wlaker, was black. But to claim most people are on here defending Stafford because he is white and that we would not do the same if he were black is biased and racist and an attempt to grasp at straws to spew trash at a kid. You are the only one who brought that entire issue up. It was not enough that you called him a thug which he does not deserve, even if he were drinking, but now he is more guilty if he doesn’t get in trouble because he is white. Your mentality is one that says we should punish him for this because he is white. Each case with kids is different and he has done nothing to deserve being called a thug. I think even you will have to concede the integrity with which Mark Richt has handled our program thus far. He is a first class man of impeccable character in every way, and I would say that of him if he were coaching anywhere in the country. I trust him to handle this in the right way.

The only appropriate action would be to kick him off the team and never let him touch a football again. I mean, a college student drinking beer at a nascar race….that’s just unheard of.

Sorry, but I’ve got to have some fun with this one boys.
So…..I guess it really is U-G-A-Y afterall!!!!
I guess the spooning picture was just “some friendly qb competition” between Stafford and Joe Cox?!!!
Call David Perno, I heard he was looking for some “Switch Hitters”.
……Well, lets give the kid the benefit of the doubt now.
Stafford was probably just practicing the Heisman pose,… passed out and just happened to land on Joe Cox.
“What’s wrong with two grown men “Hunkering down” together????
Stafford was just preparing himself for life after UGAY by visiting a mobile home park.
That wasn’t a keg, it was a “TOY” that he planned to use on Joe Cox later.
Stafford: “Hey Joe, let me show you what Odell taught me after he got out of the slammer”
Joe Cox: “Odell….is that you again???”

what if Vick did it ? you would put your hoods back on and try and hang him for it. But not a good ol gawga boy! And you people wonder why no elite athletes want to play in this town. your starting qb is on the ground with your backup and you are making excuses for him. remember the Vick photo? I will bet anyone on here any amount that this is swept right under the rug with the same broom used for Kerney. Underage drinking is illegal. Period. Send a message Richt.

I definitely don’t think that Matt Stafford is a thug, far from it. I said that to make a point. I don’t think that he should be getting in any trouble, white, black, brown, blue, etc. It does not show him consuming any alcohol, so it should not be such a big deal. I am not saying that you should not be defending him. You are still missing my point. If the things that I am saying do not apply to you then you shouldn’t even worry about what I am saying. As I said, my opinion is based off of my observations, and if you don’t agree then that is your right. All I am saying is that the tone of this blog would be different had he been color. So if that is pulling the race card, then I have a whole deck of cards waiting. If I am wrong, then society has yet to prove that to me. Basically what I am saying has nothing to do with how Mr. Richt is going to handle this situation, and nothing to do with Matt Stafford as a person, I AM TALKING ABOUT PUBLIC OPINION. What about that do you not understand? Or do you just not want to understand? THIS IS MY OPINION. If I offended anybody by jokingly calling him a thug, get over it, like I said, I was making a point.

Tech4 Ever is a lying idiot!!! By in large, Dawg fans have given your Tech thugs a break (and so have those Dawg-haters who call themselves AJC writers! You’d think GT has Journalism School that sends scores of graduates to the AJC!) The only Tech idiot who Dawgs fans frequently crack on is Reggie Ball! I hear little to nothing about the poor choices Calvin Johnson, Reubin Houston, and Kenny Scott have made! Heck the only reason I even heard about Scott’s plight was because he was crying like a baby over the fact that Gordon Ely-Kelso almost got drafted over him!!

He obviously didn’t drive home drunk because he was neither in an accident or pulled over and it wasn’t like he was driving home from a bar. Talladega is a little bit of a drive! Have a talk with him, run him and move on! If he’d been arrested then it would be a completely different story!! It was made an issue of race by ???? He says so in his blogs; go back and read them. He also calls Stafford a thug. If he is a thug based on the pictures shown here, then almost every college student is also. You mentality suggests that UGA is not doing its job if we don’t hire secret police to follow every student and athlete around all the time, photographing them and making sure we punish the athletes more severely, especailly the high profile ones. Stafford is under 21 and if it can be proved that he was drinking then he was breaking the law and should be disciplined accordingly. People can’t just brush it off as kids will be kids. There are to many drunk drivers on the road. We don’t need kids adding to the danger. He should be an example not a statistic and Richt should make this clear.

Boy, those photos of Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn are pretty interesting!! Guess the Gators didn’t want us to know about their stud QB getting it on with another dude. I guess he was just horseplaying around like some 19 year old sophomore to be. Matthew and Joe are going to take more than their fair share of harassment from their teamates (not to mention getting their butts chewed by the coaches). I suspect the Gators might need to police their own before they start yapping too much. As for Tech, pleasssse give us a break.

RDB Dawg.. It has nothing to do with Vick, but,he will get more praise from all the ya hoo’s who see,”Beer and a Girl”..This boy may already have a drinking problem and maybe an alcoholic and practice unsafe sex like “ron mexico”..And just like he was burned on this site with u bloggers and one “Jeff Schultz”,this young boy deserves the same treatment..
He needs to be checked out to see if he is an alcoholic or not..I am gonna press the issue to Mr.Richt and the UGA President that he needs to be monitored with random testing to see if he is doing any “underage”drinking!!!
But,I know u necks with come up with an excuse because he is more like most of U,and this issue will be dead by tomorrow..

Reading all this dribble is making me glad that drinking age was 18 when I attended UF back in the early 70’s. All these picture phones and internet crapis making it toooooo easy to create a bunch of BS. I like my battles on the field where we can see who can take who. Even as a Tech fan I think there is no way you can punish him. What has he done wrong other than have a slight lapse of judgement. But, when you look at the girl you can see why.
I am sure coach will have a few words with him about how he may not have been drinking but the perception is that he did. Frequently people take perception as reality.

It is a sure bet that any 19 year old at a NASCAR event lifting a beer keg is also an underage drinker. It is naive and a coverup to assume anything else. It is also clearly wrong to punish a young black man for the same crime and let Matt go unsuspended. Matt probably would not have allowed this picture to be taken but he was too intoxicated to realize what was happening.

This is common activity for young athletes that I know. Most of them are risk-takers, just by the fact that they are willing to take on the tremendous pressures of competing in sports that we adults think are so almighty important. So they let off some steam sometimes. Who cares, as long as they are not out on the road risking their lives, or someone elses! If he throws 2 touchdown passes next year to beat Florida, ya’ll would give your left (I’ll clean this up) leg to be partying with him! Good grief, when in the presence of a member of the opposite sex, who was quite attractive I might add, young men revert back to our caveman days and start doing stupid stuff - like trying to lift heavy objects over your head to show the fair damsel how strong you are. If you’re a redneck, the feat of strength is usually preceeded by “Hey ya’ll, watch this.” Can Matthew help it if the only heavy object around was a beer keg? I think not.
Now, about Matthew spooning his buddy…. If I were the Center on the O-line, I might be a bit concerned….

Do y’all see now that the AJC has fully emersed itself as a tabloid rag like the New York Post? What with the headlines that read “Vick This” and “Stafford That” and the idea of trying these guys in the court of public opinion without concrete proof. Here’s the thing about Stafford’s “transgression:” even the military, which looks for any flimsy reason to NJP young enlisted men a women who are under age for minor in possession (MIP) could not use those pictures as evidence against someone. Until Vick is arrested for something or someone catches Stafford drinking, like Hebron, then all of this crap from the AJC is just tabloid junk trying to sell papers.
What in the name of Rubert H. Murdock is going on with the AJC, people!?

I am Cuz, and Cuz I am, if you don’t know me, dont care a dam.
Matt and I went to a race, in a different state in a different place.
Would you could you have a beer? I have a keg so have no fear. I would not could not have a beer, I do not like it there nor here.
Well I would like one and I have a keg, but it is heavy and of you I beg, to lift it up and set it down, for I would like to drink and drown.
Yes I will help you with the keg, but I have noticed some real fine leg. Would you go ahead and take our pic, this keg is heavy so do it quick.
I will take a picture at this race, and then I will put it on Myspace.
But would you could you drink a beer, no one will know so have no fear.
I cannot, shall not drink a beer.I do not like it and do not jeer.
Would you drink it if you were at Tech? Don’t mention that place it makes me retch.
Would you drink it with the cockks? Not even hidden in a box.
Would you drink it with the Tide? No not with them I have my pride.
Would you drink one with the Vols? Oh give me a break, I got some balls.
Would you drink one on the plain? I do not want one thanks the same.
Would you drink one with a Gator? I am tired of this so see you later.
Cuz I do not want to drink a beer. I do not want one there or here.

Ctmoore, the difference is not so black and white as you assume, sounds bigoted of you also. Was Matt drinking? I don’t know. Were you sharing a funnel with him. Hebron was arrested. Matt had his picture taken. If he had thrown beer cans at Jeff Gordon, he would have been arrested. Hebron was arrested, went to jail and if he paid his fine, then he admitted guilt. The United States is a country of laws, not mob rule. If Matt was arrested, if he paid his fine and admitted his guilt, then he would be held accountable for a first alcohol violation. Hebron was on his second. Whether you think this is racism is moot. If Matt gets caught underage drinking, he will pay his dues. He has not been caught unless there is more to this story than I know.
Yeah I would like my QB to behave and tow the line. But I can also see a pretty girl asking me the starting QB, you look strong. Me, let me show you how strong. Friend, wait a minute great picture, I have a camera. Pretty girl, would you pick that keg up and take a pic with me. Me, I will eat the keg if that will make you happy.
These are kids in adult bodies. At 47, sober, I know it would be the wrong thing to do in the age of the internet. At 19 today, drunk or sober, heck yeah babe, and I can throw a rocket 70 yards and hit a man at a full run for a TD, come watch me this fall.
Matthew has done nothing wrong, unless there is more to this story; than be a teenager. I remember being young and dumb. Now I am just old and dumb, but you get the point.

So Matt is bi, not like there is anything wrong with that. A little Seinfield.
When I was in Athens, before Al Gore invented the internet, I used to go to a bar called the Fifth Quarter, or as we called it, Swino’s.
This was a big time redneck bar and you could always count on a few bikers. If you think there is an anti-gay attitude now, try it in 1981. Another straight friend of mine and I used to get a kick out of walking in the door. Waving daintily and yell, Heahhhhh! We would then run up and kiss each other on the cheek just to watch and laugh at others freaking out. Haven’t seen the spooning pic and seeing that I am not a voyeur, do not care. Maybe the kid was having fun as I used to do. I do know that if there had been camera phones back then, the things they would have caught me with would be great material to use on me if I ever wanted to run for office.

Anybody here ever been in a close knit guy group, say military or even dare I say frat. Passed out with more of my frat bros than I could remember. Floors, beds and taking turns puking in a toilet. None of them led to any sexual activity. Some people never enjoyed life according to these posts. Sure my GPA was low, but dang it I had fun. Sorry mel, if you have more info than I, no suspension. For all you non-dawgs just salivating like UGA when he sees a cheerleader, THE KID BROKE NO LAWS. It is not against the law to lift a keg in the air, at my age, not a good idea. What red blooded American hetero-sexual male has not tried to impress an attractive young lady. What brother in the bond, has not comforted his brother, he just passed out while doing it and the picture team chick got in the act. This whole thing other than Stafford hugging on his brother smells of a setup. Spooning, I wish you people would grow up and realize the power of friendship. If you have never had a friend like this, I feel sorry for you. These guys had fun as college kids, I did too, let it be. If they drank, they were smart enough to do it in private. No pics of that yet. And no matter how many try to call racism, Stafford was not arrested. No sanctions, sorry that is just the way it works. Get over it and get a life. Or be like me posting at 4:00 am. The meds have kicked in and are keeping me awake. What a bummer. At least Buck is still awake.

He’s a college student. Anyone causing flap over this wants to see him suspended for a couple of games (hello cocks) so their chances are better. So he is seen lifting a keg with a hottie with him. GOOD FOR HIM!! Hes a college student enjoying life at a NASCAR race. I had a gamecock idiot attack me about this yesterday. How stupid. I drank A LOT of beer at Georgia and flirted with A LOT of women. I inhaled at Georgia too! Now, I’m older, wiser and doing great and proud of my days as a young man at Georgia. If the kid was behind the wheel of a car or exposing himself we would have a problem. He is a college kid having fun. WHAT A WASTE OF NEWS. Richt will use this silly CRAP to set an example to Matt and move on. Everyone wanting suspension is a jealous wannabe to gain chances at beating the dawgs. This is like saying, “lets strip Tech of all its wins the past 4 seasons since Calvin Johnson admitted to smoking pot at an NFL combine.” As a Georgia fan, this is a good idea, but in reality its silly.

If either of these issues are grounds for suspension, then do it. If it’s because the guy’s drinking, fahget about it. You Florida, Alabama, Auburn, UT, and Tech fans must have some pretty empty and aimless lives to be spending time on a UGA blog. Get a life!
Anyone that thinks UGA has the most white trash fans clearly has not seen the Alabama faithful. Few of their fans have ever even been to Tuscaloosa, and damn few hold a degreee from there. Wifebeaters, gold chains, denim shorts, and flipflops are not staples for UGA fans, but they are for Florida fans.
If Florida is so great, move back there and stay there, and you’ll never have to argue your point with a UGA grad again. Got that?
Florida does not win every single year. In recent years, Georgia has lost the majority of them, but may years back, Georgia owned Florida. Where were all of the fairweather fans then? This year, we have a week off before the game like you do, and the field is being leveled. Mark it on your calendar wifebeater lovers, it is the turning point.
Stafford did not get arrested, the photos do not evidence that he was in the midst of a bunch of people, and he is not doing anything obviously illegal. Hebron was arrested twice in a short period of time, as Ian Smith was, and there is a difference.
Joe Cox looks like he may have been loaded. No one has really pointed that out, but he may end up getting the worst of it from Richt.

He should not punish him for this incident. We as adults have to remember we were young once and did some of the same behaviors that this young man has done, and really what has he done that is so morally wrong. Stop judging these young people and let them experience life for what it is.

I was admitted to UGA in the winter of 78. I waited to take my SAT and was too late for fall. I went for orientation on a non football Saturday to Athens. It was a rainy day. After the bus tour there was going to be a keg party on the Quad, memory fails me I think Reed is one of the halls. The quad and the dorms were some of the oldest at UGA. I do not know if the University sponsored the keg party, but I do know that it was mentioned by my orientation leader that was on the bus with us as we drove through campus.
I was 18 and of legal drinking age. Because of the rain, I skipped the quad keg party and went to my cousins frat, the AG one, pickups and farmboys. It is remarkable the change that has occurred in University policy since then. Back then, alcohol was cool, but turn in your roomate who smokes a joint. Pot is probably okay now. Alcohol, how about five days in the stocks and a public whipping. Where for God’s sake is reality.

Come on people…it’s all about character. From Kemp to Herrick and beyond. Richt’s number 1 job is to build character in these guys. Winning is an outgrowth of character. How could Stafford have been so stupid. It’s a black eye on the University, whether you believe it or not. Perception “out there” is reality.

Look guys, 1. He is a scholarship athlete of UGA therefore whether in Al, GA Tn or anywhere else, he is a representative of UGA football, 2. He should have known better since Richt had just spoken to the team about this type behavior, 3. Richt should punish him for being stupid, 5am stadium steps for an hour should do the trick, run him til his tongue swells, 4 How can anyone tell that is Cox with them?? 5. Anyone else gets punished!!

Only homophobes would freak out about the “spooning.” Look through any normal college guy’s facebook profile, and you’ll see quite a few “gay” pictures. Its fun to mess with your friends when they are pass-out drunk. Actually, its the only real reason to stay sober. If you can’t see the humor in that then go get yourself a beer buddy, cause you need to loosen up.
All those pictures tells me is that he is a normal guy, and a lot less likely to be some stuck up douche who’s only good for throwing a football.
We all see these players downtown in Athens (yes even the freshmen), just like we see the cute 19 year old girl in our O-Chem class downtown. Its pretty normal.
Dont be so judgmental of all these kids, cause your 18 year old UGA kid is pregaming right now at a buddy’s house, not thinking about the Psychology 1001 final on Monday at 8AM (‘cause he/she doesn’t need to. Unless you are a math major, or something else that actually takes practice, college is, dare I say, easy.)
Kids are here to grow socially as much as they are here to grow intellectually. I know, “you don’t need alcohol…” whatever, say what you will, but this is the real world, and it sure helps to meet people when you are 100 miles from home, alone for the first time, and your new roommate eats tofu and plays World of WarCraft all day.

Thanks RX, I was going to keep going with it but I remembered Mark Twain saying brevity is the soul of wit. Green eggs and ham is still my favorite book and I am 47.
Christian Dawg, do you only have sex to have children and do you only use the “missionary position”. Let me guess, the world was created 4000 years ago and the universe revolves around the earth. Man have you ever had fun in your entire life, or is your idea of fun pointing out others faults while neglecting your own. You know, the splinter versus the log analogy ala Jesus.

Great post jp, come back and post anytime. It is good for people to remember what it was like to be in college at UGA. Or any other school for the matter. I learned more that I use in my life outside the classroom, than I ever learned in class. And yeah I got a degree from UGA, class of 83.
Look all you uptight people, let the kids have a little fun. Scholarship atheletes (sic) need to let off steam as much as I did who worked and went to school at the same time.

Unless someone saw him drinking the beer, the young man should be left alone about this. We put too much pressure on these young people to be abnormally “good”. If he had been lifting the young lady would that imply he was having sex with her. Some folks need to get a life of their own.

Techfan, welcome to the blog. Your sense of reality is refreshing. Many of my true dawg friends get p** when I say I pull for you guys when you are not playing us. I don’t care. Same state, same pride. I wish more were like you and me. I am a Dawg fan first, a Georgia homer second, any team. And a true fan of college football, the greatest sport ever.

Seeing Stafford cuddle with another player makes me wonder what’s going on in the huddle in Athens. Spooning with Cox was it? I guess we’ll always wonder when Stafford has his hands in a certain spot when the ball is hiked. Don’t ask, don’t tell. No more jokes about UT fans with their cousins. At least we’re not ‘keeping it in the team family’!

I think Richt should pull Stafford aside, and have a heart-to-heart with him about the outstanding female company he keeps. Then, the two should go to Richt’s house, have a beer, and go over plans for winning SEC and national titles.

UGA’s last national Title might have been in 1980, but Florida has had 2 since then!! HA Matter of fact Florida has had the same number of National Titles that Georgia has had SEC titles since that time, 2. You have to win your own division before, you can win your own conference, and before you can win a National Title.
Want to know something else that is funny, all the UGA fans say Tebow cant throw the ball. Tebow had 5 TD passes in 33 att. Stafford had 7 td passes in 256 att. not bad 2 more td passes in 223 more att. Oh yeah I forgot though Tebow can’t throw the ball. I cant wait until he throws for 400 yards come the cocktail party.

Cuz - I can explain the Tebow pictures! The first one was in biology class, as he was mearly showing a fellow student how frogs hunt their prey. The second picture is two fold. Young Tim Tebow was not only practicing his midget tossing skills (with a heavier projectile), he was demonstrating on how to carry the team to victory.

yea, I remember when I first started to learn about football stats. Ah to be in jr high again! Hey, so how about this, Stafford averaged 134 yards per game passing and Tebow averaged 25. Stafford must be 5 times a better passer? Hey this is fun. How about Tebow was 0-0 and one fumble against UGA last year. I guess he will never complete a pass in his carrer Vs the Dawgs? Stats are fun.
BTW , our “passing” QB averaged almost as many yrd as your “running” QB did too.

Cox agreed with the analysts: “Stafford does have a quick release”.
Number changes for next season: Cox 6, Stafford 9.
Referee #1 (at Talladega): “Holding #7 on the offense”
Referee #2 (at Talladega): “Illegal use of the hands on #7”
Referee #3 (aTalladega): “Intentional grounding on #7”
Referee #4 (at Talladega): “Roughing the passer on #7”
Referee #5 (at Talladega): “Player in the neutral zone”

The pictures of Stafford at Talledega holding a beer keg over his head should be ignored completely. He wasn’t on the Georgia Campus drinking, he wasn’t even in Georgia at all, he was at a Nascar race in Alabama. Are there beer police now? College is for having some fun every now and then.

The problem is that Michael Adams never had any fun in college. Infact, he never has any fun now, just ask his wife. So he hates to see college kids have fun, especially if the are popular (because he never was).

Let me just first say, this makes me a little nervous. Stafford is one of those diamonds in the ruff that do not come around that often. We don’t need him getting into trouble and doing suspicios thinga that could cause concern(i.e. hoisting a beeer keg over his head) now granted he is only a 19 year old kid, but you have to be carefull. We can’t loose him and or have any off the field incidents like this one. I know Richt will have a discussion with Matt and lay down this is what it is. Do I believe this is a horrible crime, no. There is no evidence that says he was drinking or any of that, so I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. But please Matt, be careful, we can’t loose you.

Richt and the Univ sent a very clear message when they suspended Hebron for an entire season “for drinking” and not being nice to the bouncers at a local bar. Hebron is a five star prep player at LB in high school and after redshirting would have gotten significant PT this season if not a starting position.
I have to admit that I don’t think it is fair that Hebron got a whole season while Ian Smith (ONLY) got 7 games and Smith seems to have the bigger problem.
I am a bit of a libertarian and believe that a 21 year old drinking age is silly. However, that is the law and the rules of the Univ. are set up to suspend a student that has 2 offenses in this area.
Anyone who thinks that UGA goes lightly on football players is dead wrong. Losing 25% of your NCAA eligibility for drinking alcohol in college is a pretty serious penalty for that type of “crime”.
I don’t know of ANY other school or program that would mete out that kind of punishment for this type of incident. Certainly not Florida, tech, Auburn, TN, South Car., or Auburn. Basically, any of UGA’s rivals.
Remember when FL suspended a player for the first half of a game??? If Hebron were at UF, he would be suspended for the opening kickoff and the first three defensive plays of the game.
Most of FL’s high draft picks were considered “character risks” by NFL GM’s. One of them was suspended for only 1 game for doing drugs!
Tech has a player convicted on felony drug trafficking and he plays in the very next game the police allow him to.
I’d hate to see what happens to a UGA player if one actually hurts someone or steals somthing.
