Richt, Stafford to discuss keg photos
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
By now, I imagine everybody in the Bulldog Nation has heard something about the keg incident involving Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. If not, here it is in a nutshell:
Circulating on the Internet are photos of the Bulldogs’ 19-year-old star lifting a beer keg over his head and generally clowning around with a beautiful young woman and another unidentified guy. Supposedly the pictures were taken during a NASCAR race at Talladega.
Now nowhere in these photos is it clear that Stafford is drinking beer (though he’s clearly having a good time). And, as one Georgia official pointed out to us, the fact that he’s picking up the keg over his head in one of the pictures indicates the keg is likely empty (not sure if that is a good thing or not).
In any case, the Bulldogs already are likely going to lose for the season one potential starting player in redshirt freshman linebacker Akeem Hebron) due to two arrests for underage drinking. So the surfacing of the pictures of Stafford are badly timed and it’s certainly not good PR for the star QB to be seen horsing around with a keg.
Here’s what we know for sure: Head coach Mark Richt, in Jacksonville Thursday night with several other coaches speaking to the Bulldog Club there, is aware of the situation and plans to talk to Stafford about it. That’s what team publicist Claude Felton, also in Jacksonville, told our Carter Strickland. We’ll probably follow up on this on Friday.
My question to you folks is this: How should Richt handle this? Should Stafford be punished? If so, in what way, shape or form? Suspended? Or should it be ignored completely?

Coach Rick needs to pull the young stud aside and let him know that he needs to be more discreet in his activities. Rich needs to tell the stud that if he is going to mount HOT college chicks, he needs to keep it at the safehouse

Ubiquitous digital photography and the ease of making infinite, free copies of photographs that can be sent anywhere and stored permanently is going to get us all in trouble at some point in the internet age. Let’s hope that includes as few Dawgs as possible. Let’s make a deal: if anyone takes pictures of partying with Matthew Stafford, don’t put them on the internet.

Who cares? He’s in college and aloud to have fun. Only a naive person thinks kids wait until 21 to start drinking alcohol. Just because he is holding an empty keg doesn’t mean he is going to show up to games drunk. I say, ‘No harm… no foul!’

“Should Stafford be punished? If so, in what way, shape or form? Suspended? Or should it be ignored completely?”….uh, how about neither. How about we try this. Coach Richt tells him to be careful what he does, who he hangs out with, and what he does in front of a camera. Be careful and stay out of trouble. 9 out of 10 males who ever went to college drank beer…big freakin’ deal. He was doing what we all have done or would like to have been doing when we were that age.

I think Chip Towers failed to mention in his article that University of Georgia campus rules and Athens Clarke County laws are not enforcable in Alabama, or anywhere else outside of Clarke County (unless of course Mike Adams thinks his job as UGA President gives him the moral authority to approve or disapprove of people’s behavior regardless of where they are. Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown said it all. Seriously, I didn’t play QB and Georgia and scored a lot of HOT chicks there….let this kid (QB stud) grow up and have some room to experience college without some tech grad following him around with a camera phone in total awe. Life is hard enough when you grow up, give him the chance to make the mistakes we all have made. Food for thought…Tech 20 percent female, UGA 60 per cent. I am no mathematician, but I do believe this is the real cause of all this jealously and abuse of camera phones.

Pleassssse. If Stafford was a third team linebacker Saint Richt would kick him off have a press conference to boast how he instills dicipline and will not tolerate team rules being broken. But since it involves Stafford his prized quarterback. Saint Bobby Jr. will have a discussion make him only consume one cookie at night instead of two and that will be it.

These AU coeds were just clowning around until somebody thought it would be an embarrassment to the kid and to UGA…and a Florida guy I know is claiming that Stafford is such a poor student he’ll only last one more season anyway…point being, if they can’t beat him they’ll try to hound him out. And gee, I wonder if Mark Richt did any underage drinking at the UofM?

If you are a college kid and you have friends, chances are you have engaged in some underage drinking. Why should one kid be held to a higher standard just because he can throw a football? He needs to make sure people keep the cameras away the next time he goes out drinking, but other than that, lay off the guy, it’s not that big of a deal. Oh well. All I can think while reading the spew flowing from the mutts is… If that had been Taylor Bennet, Tashard Choice, Kenneth Wheeler or some other Tech starter in that pic, you no-class dog fans would be all over Tech about their “under-age drinking” issues. Let’s face it, UGA has so much of a drinking problem it cost a student his life here not too long ago. So, yes, Stafford was drunk off his gord and we all know it. You just want to be tolerant of it because this was your prize pooch caught in an embarrasing moment… not to mention passing out while cuddling with another man (that’s just priceless). Now, I do not condone drinking at all especially by underage persons (at Tech, UGA or otherwise). As a paramedic I have seen, all-to-often, the results of alcohol use/abuse. It is never good. If you were true fans of an otherwise great school (not just fans of braggin’ rights) you would hold Richt accountable to treat Stafford appropriately. And YES, the UGA rules DO apply off campus and out of state. When you represent your school (plese note the Georgia Champions logo on his T-shirt) you fall under their rules. Stafford is just another high-profile punk who thinks his celebrity status will get him a free pass. And sadly, he is right. UGA history proves the little guy is made into an example and the important players have their infractions overlooked. Just watch how Akeem Hebron is handled v/s Stafford. Get over your “Stafford did nothing wrong” attitude and show some integrity. Obviously no one wearing a UGA jersey knows what integrity is.

This kid is entering his sophmore year in college. What has he done wrong? Leave him alone, and let him learn from this. Richt should certainly talk to him for purely percautionary reasons and perhaps warn him that, because he is Mathew Stafford and Georgia’s starting quarterback, eyes are constantly upon him. However, it should stay within the family. Given today’s world of digital cameras, the internet and sports blogs, everything these guys do is public. I really feel for him, because from what I see, he has done nothing wrong. Because of today’s environment and access to the internet, people like Matt Stafford do not get to enjoy the college experience in a social context. It is unfortunate, but true. For those of you in the future who might happen to see one of these young men and think it might be cool to “get a picture to show your friends you partying with” a certain athlete, please realize once you put it on the internet, you have published to the entire world and loose control of the context in which it is disseminated. Matt Stafford is an extraordinarily gifted athlete, who makes a big difference in our teams quality. It would only hurt our team and our fan base if he misses the Oklahoma State game because someone wanted to show friends they were with Matt Stafford at a Nascar race.

This is the problem with society today. Stafford gets tanked and is viewed as “just a kid having fun.” Calvin Johnson admits to smoking marijuana, it is ignored and he still goes #2 in the draft. I think it is embarassing that these “kids” (from UGA AND Tech alike) are allowed to get away with whatever they want as long as they get the “W” for the “team.” It is sad to see that as a whole, fans are willing to look beyond destructive behavior just for “braggin’ rights.” We wink at criminal behavior and even elevate it to glamorous in some cases. Well, I guess the mentality is as I have stated… “Whatever it takes to get the “Win.” If you are willing to think that way, then stand proud. I don’t understand it myself, but if it’s that important to you then so be it. I know the opinion of one person won’t change a thing, but it is my opinion and of that I will stand proud (as opposed to the glorification of criminal behavior.) I will be a fan of Tech4Ever but I will NEVER glorify the behavior of anyone on any team (Yes, even Tech…) that is criminal and more importantly, destructive. Have a great day… Thanx for the debate.

How many days until kickoff in Athens?
I’m jealous of Matt. I wonder what the chick that took the picture looks like?
Maybe it was her that he was lifting that keg for.

The news hawks are hurting for a story! This is ridiculous a 19 year old college kid seen with an attractive young college girl and beer, stop the press, call a news conference, or no what are we going to do! I do not care who he plays for or what position he plays a 19 year is going to be a 19 year old. I guarantee Mike Adams and CMR had a few brews in their collegiate days. Let the boy have some fun HE IS IN COLLEGE…this is crazy.

Who the hell is Coach Rick and Coach Rich? You know, if our team didn’t have someone arrested every five freakin minutes, these pictures wouldn’t mean shiyat. On the other hand, Stafford is the team’s leader on and OFF the field. He should behave accordingly and set an example.

So what if he drinks? He attends UGA where all underaged undergrads drink. Do you want him to stick out and not be part of “the group”? He’ll lose his self esteem. Let’s quit thinking that UGA is such a step above everyone else—-THEY DRINK, too!!
What he should do is mix a little beer and take shots of Uncle Jack.
It’s Gra-8 to be a G-8-or!!

Hey, Brian. Yeah, a “real” championship won courtesy of fluke play versus Florida, a squeaker over a mediocre Notre Dame (that couldn’t even beat Tech) and a tainted SEC title that was the result of a watered-down schedule that did not include games against the 2nd, 3rd and 4th-place teams in the conference — including LSU and Alabama. Congrats on that.

The only reason this is an issue is because of the recent alcohol issues with the UGA football team. You really cant accuse the kid of drinking. Seems he was just showing off for that hot young lady he was with! Can’t fault him there. Just a bad use of judgement if you ask me. Now…the other pictures of him spooning with the other guy who looked passed out (possibly Joe Cox), those are a little shady! :) LOL

In the above was written “That’s what team publicist Claude Felton, also in Jacksonville, told our Carter Strickland. We’ll probably follow up on this on Friday.” Told “our” Carter Strickland?? OK, something smells here. Looks as if someone else wrote this article ‘for’ Carter Strickland. If so, what a poor excuse of a beat writer the ajc has.

Seriously? Seriously? How many of you folks went to college?? The kid is 19 years and having a good time. I agree he is underage, and “if”(and he probably was) he was drinking that is against the law. CMR needs to have a talk about how everyperson on every d**n website and talk show invloving sports loves to break this type of story. When they smell blood they attack!! To bad they are all so hypocritical since they themselves probably did the same of worse in school. Cut all these guys from every school some slack. I know the athletes are held to a higher standard, but he is HOLDING UP A KEG. Not holding up a liquor store. I really cannot see the big deal!!! Please go find something important to discuss!

Why is it that every discussion of UGA football is interrupted by some lame UF fan. Why don’t you Gators discuss the photos which surfaced of Tim Tebow partying and trying to stick his tongue in some other dude’s ear. The Great Tebow was obviously smashed in these photographs as he partied with several other drunken gators. Oh by the way, the FL Attorney General just dropped charges against a FL Gator player. Of course he did, that’s the way they work things in Gainesville. Every Gator player involved in everything from drugs to assualts are eventually determined to be innocent. Just like O.J.

In all of this underage drinking news - let’s not forgot how ridiculous it is that the legal drinking age is 21! Politicians are such dirtbag hypocrites - 18-20 year olds are responsible enough to go to war, but not responsible enough to drink a Bud? The drinking age should be 18 and everybody knows it.

**Absolutely the BEST thing that could have happened to the kid, the coach, and all Dawg fans. Minor beer-related event causes coach to call the sophomore 5-star quarterback to the straight and narrow. He’ll be made to toe the line. He’ll have nothing to keep himself occupied except football. I predict all SEC two years in a row and a Heisman trophy. Then he will declare for the NFL draft a year early.
All of that, and I’m an Alabama fan. Roll Tide, Roll!

Wow, the kid is in college and I’ll bet 99.9% of kids in college have drank beer. I think I had one or two during my collegiate playing career. Also, who was the idiot that took the pictures and put them on the web? If that was a friend of Stafford he needs to drop that clown as a friend. Kids will be kids and just because he plays ball dosen’t mean the kid can’t have some fun.

This whole thing with Matt Stafford is a result of poor judgment from quite a few people, but it certainly not worth all the hype it is receiving. Remember “judge not lest ye be judged.” I pay my money every year because I trust CMR to handle this in the wise and fair manner he always does. Tech and Florida and any other team can stop pointing fingers at Stafford or UGA because your programs have had kids who have done similar things or worse. How quickly the Techies forget their recent Clavin Johnson, “I smoked pot” statement and the games forfeited for kids not attending classes. This is not the first problem any of us will have. Remember these guys are still kids in many ways.

Staff just needs to learn that he is basically a celebrity and needs to guard against sensational media. We live in an age where the media will spin anything they can get(LIKE THIS) so just be careful of giving them the ammo. Take a look at people like Tiger Woods and others, who all like to have a good time but are careful about it. There is no evidence of any wrong doing here so it is a non issue.

As a former player of a large, albeit unimportant, football program, myself, I find that behavior simply unacceptable. He is an embarassment to his school and family, and, by all means, should be forbidden from representing UGA on the field again.
By Bryant

He is a college football player. He is in his early 20’s. He can have a keg if he wants to. He was not on school property. He was not at a school event. It’s none of UGA’s business what he does on his own free time. This country is getting out of hand delving into people’s personal liberties. We are resticting more and more rights of individuals and it is time to stop and look at the big picture.
Was he hurting anyone? Was he drinking and driving? Was he doing this at a UGA event? The answer is no. Move on!
If UGA loses him over this, it is their loss. He should switch schools and go somewhere where more important things matter.

Word of mouth is a powerful tool. However, if I hadn’t seen this story on AJC, I wouldn’t have even known about this incident so common as this one is among college students. I’ll bet that some of Stafford’s peers at UGA and in other colleges would not have been able to lift an empty keg, let alone a full one. They would have been too drunk.
It has been a long time since I ordered beer as I never liked the taste of the stuff when I was Stafford’s age. Do they serve it in styrofoam cups with plastic lidss and straws? While I don’t drink alcohol I do associate with people who do. I don’t recall ever seeing anyone drink beer with a straw?
Do you suppose that Stafford thought these pictures would be posted on the Internet and be singled out by AJC? If he was naive, he isn’t anymore.
