UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Air Force on deck

Good win for Georgia last night against Fresno State in the NIT. Kind of a bizarre game with all the 3s and all. Georgia won by 10 points but, oddly enough, it felt like a 20- or 30-point win. The Bulldogs never seemed in jeopardy.

As expected, it was a really quaint crowd. Fortunately for Georgia it was general admission seating so it didn’t look as horrible on TV as it actually was attendance-wise. But with UGA out on spring break along with virtually all the surrounding school systems, there was just nowhere to draw from.

This next game is going to be the really interesting one. Air Force (24-8) beat Austin Peay pretty handily last night in Colorado Springs. Now the Dogs get them out there Monday night at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. Your faithful correspondent will be there to chronicle it for you. There was a chance we couldn’t go depending on travel expenses and tip time and such but we were able to make sense of it all and I’m definitely going.

The Falcons, who were 17-1 at one time this season, are an extremely efficient offensive team that runs a version of the old Princeton cut-and-backdoor system. Georgia will be more physical and athletic but will have to play very disciplined on defense to have a chance. Talking to Fresno coach Steve Cleveland after last night’s game (he coached at BYU for years and therefore played AF every season) and he said the Dogs should be able to handle it. The biggest challenge, he said, will be playing at that elevation.

As we saw again last night, when Georgia is knocking down the 3s, it’s almost unbeatable. If Levi Stukes gets dialed in, look out.

So with the NCAAs underway now, how much interest do you guys have in seeing Georgia advance in the NIT? Do you see any merits in the Dogs getting in these extra games? I guess 20 wins would look good. If they beat AF, they get the DePaul-Kansas State winner. What are the odds of Georgia getting to New York?

I think this team has a legit chance of getting to NY. Last night was quite strange walking into STEG and it being completely empty. I’m not sure what the problem is. I left my office at 5pm in downtown Atlanta and made it in plenty of time. I thought the fans that did show up tried really hard to make some noise when the team needed it. As for merits, the more games you play the more practice and experience you get. I thought we showed great improvement last night in passing the ball and our BIGS adjusted and started shooting the 6 foot jumpers. Something that had not been done in previous games. It is this type of experience that makes the NIT so valuable for teams that need to improve and build. Thank You! Levi and Steve for giving it your all on court for 4 years and not abandoning the program like so many others.

I’m very interested because I’d like to see a repeat of the SEC wining both tournaments. If we get past the altitude and beat the Air Force then I think we hit the biggest obstacle(sp) in our way o N.Y> and that’s Kansas St. Before our game on Monday, I want to see As many PAC-10 TEAMS AS POSSIBLE SENT HOME…….GATORHATER, it was interesting when the blond player got cold.

Ah yes womens tennis should be played in a refrigerated stadium. Then again, maybe she was just concentrating on the fuzzy tennis balls.

Chip, did you notice anything different about the Dawg “O” last night? It appeared that when Brown came out from under the basket and played around the foul line (same with Bliss) and hit their shots that by playing some int the “Ocean” Stukes had a lol mote uncontesed shots and Gainses, even though he missed then, had open lanes for his drives, This didn’t seem to be the “O” I’d watched before. I saw a lot more ball movement. You were there, am I missing somthing?

I’ll tell you what I noticed about the game. I noticed a ton of empty seats. When you gymnastics team fills the gym with a bunch of perverted men and horney male stdents then that would explain why the NCAA left UGA out if the tourney. They simply don’t have enough support yet.

Chip - I’m definitely looking forward to the DAWGS playing the “Zoomies” as we call them out here in Colorado Springs! I’m a UGA alum living out here and I know they are excited about this matchup. Tickets went on sale right after the game w/ Austin Peay finished last night and the arena, albeit a small one (app.6,000)is nearly sold out! There is a great UGA alumni base out of Denver that gathers for football games in the fall and I’m going to see about stirring some interest to get a decent group of fans to come out for the game. Good to hear you get to cover the game — get ready for a Rocky Mtn. high for sure.

20 wins after the last 2 seasons would be huge. I have a lot of interest in seeing this team advance, and I think the team does too. Yata is a leader on this team and they would all like to play at The Garden where he could have some hometown fans. If they get that far, flights are cheap, so I’ll go support them. It was weird last night, but the fans that were there were mostly tip-off clubbers, etc., so it was a small but informed and enthusiastic crowd. The best thing about it was how much fun the team seemed to be having. They really seemed to be enjoying the chance to play more; a lot of smiling going on. Levi was really happy to have another chance after the Tenn & UF games.

Go Dawgs!

Your comments sound like you’re expecting to roll into Colorado Springs with no obstacle to victory except the altitude. The Falcons were one of the best teams in the nation for most of the season. A late shooting slump kicked them out of the NCAA’s, but Georgia won’t see that team. They’ll see a team that beat five NCAA Tournament teams this season. They will see a team that plays lock-down defense like they’ve never seen. Ask Austin Peay. Georgia will lose. Your obstacle isn’t Kansas State, it’s Air Force, and they will prove to be an insurmountable obstacle.

If so please email me at…price_cochran@yahoo.com. I would really appreciate it. Sorry to post again but I just wanted to ask for some help. Won’t hog the blog with another post.

Just as I said the dawgs would handle Fresno with ease and run them off the court, I unfortunately predict they will be completely taken out of their game by Air Force. Aside from the altitude affecting their stamina, they will shoot poorly against this smothering defense. Air Force is a very well coached team. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.

I watched some of the Air Force game last night and I was not impressed. They look small and fragile. Our players are bigger and stronger. T. Brown will have his way inside, and when they double team him, the shooters will hit their shots.

All I saw was a bunch of skinny white boys. Our white boy stiffs are much bigger and stronger than them. I predict Gaines will harass those wanabee soilders all night.

After getting the beat down from Florida ( National Champs ) three times this year, we win without much struggle.

Conditioning will help offset altitude, but I’ve always heard that the rule of thumb is that it takes 1 day for every 1,000 feet change in elevation. I’d pack some oxygen tanks for half-time just in case.

The Air Force Academy always used to be at a disadvantage in football because everyone there was going to fly some kind of plane and at some point you were too big to fit in a plane. I heard they used to have the cadets sit in a chair and then they’d measure the length of their arms and legs. Using those numbers and a chart they were pretty much assigned to a type of aircraft - fighter, tanker, etc.

Austin Peay was a good team, but a good Ohio Valley Conference team (APSU didn’t even win the OVC tournament). The SEC is not doing too bad right now (Vandy killed GW by 33!). If Air Force runs the old Princeton offense then remember that some of the big boys like UCLA got run over by that offense. I think if UGA gives up quickly on an inside game then it will be a case of the-team-that-lives-by-the-3-dies-by-the-3.

Hard to root against the Air Force Academy - those kids are brave and hard-working. Wish we were playing someone else. Nevertheless, Go Dawgs!

Chip Please find out if the stadium has a “Section 8” for crazy students like the football stadium does. Call ahead and see if the Academy will spot you a cadet from Georgia for an interview.

greg, last night I saw a different type of “O” from Ga. We saw the bigs playing 15’ out and making shots which helped set yp the 3s. Everytime almost that Brown got the ball deep he was double teamed. When Felton put him outside that broke up the dble. and we went wild. Can we win? Yes, if Felton plays the type of “O” he played last night. If he keeps Bliss and Brown 2-3 ft. from the basket we’ll lose. Discipline has never been as important as it will be Monday. The Air Force may be smaller but their type of “O” has beat many a team that had better personal. Yes, we’ll win if 1. we play in the “Ocean” 2. we play “D” with the required discipline.

Rick B, I said no such thing. I relayed what the Fresno coach said about Georgia and Air Force. If you’re asking what I expect, I’m sure it will be another tight one for the Dog with the odds slightly against them since they’re playing away from home against a different style. As always, though, if Georgia shoots 40 percent or better from 3, it probably wins. Stanford, Wake, Texas Tech, GW wins are impressive. Four losses in a row to end season were not. We’ll see.

I spent a weekend in Colorado Springs two summers ago. Over a mile up from this flatlanders elevation. It only took a six pack to get buzzed. Pack the O2 tanks kids, you may need them. For a real rush, go up Pikes Peak. Drove up and I swear I flew down. Either that or altitude sickness.

Really Quaint Crowd: ” It’s Spring Break.

From the suburbs of Barbie Bandits where no one thinks in Atlanta that anything other than Georgia Tech is worthy of a positive spin in the AJ-C, how does it feel CHIPPER, to find that with you as the supposed beat-writer of The BuLLDawgs with over a quarter of a million living UGA Alumni in these suburbs, that – not your column – but Jeff Schulz’s is chosen to be the Front Page Story for Georgia’s Men’s Team game against other chosen teams in the NIT Post-Season Tournament?

And, tell me this Mr. CHIPPER, when you MISS two-thirds of your shoots from the field, half from the free-throw charity stripe, and another three-quarters of your jacked up 3-point shots clang helplessly into your opponents hands as rebounds, how damn great is your Defense ?

Try explaining either of those to me again please Mr. Chipper, seeing as how you have not tried to explain either to me YET ?

I am not saying that the NIT is a great Tournament, when it is clearly a good one, but the facts of the matter are that many of the teams in the NCAA Tournament have absolutely zero credentials to be in it, such as Stanford I pointed out before The Big Dance began, instead of many of the SEC Teams.

Jackson State, belongs in the NCAA and Georgia doesn’t?

Florida A&M deserves to be in the Big Dance, and UGA doesn’t?

Central Connecticut State is a better choice for a Post-Season Tournament than UGA?

Weber State?

Niagara?

Eastern Kentucky?

North Texas?

Belmont?

Miami of Ohio?

Oral Roberts?

Albany?

Texas A&M Community College?

Pennsylvania?

Long Beach State?

Wright State?

George Washington?

Winthrop?

New Mexico State?

Stanford?

Holy Cross?

Gonzaga?

Davidson?

Virginia Commonwealth?

Old Dominion?

Xavier?

Notre Dame?

Butler?

Nevada?

Good Lord, what a short-sided, ill-informed, not thought out statement to make Jeff Schultz.

And, HE gets the lead front page story on the game, not the beat-writer, to make this statement.

Nice AJ-C Sports “Editor.”

THERE ARE TWENTY-FIVE (25) TEAMS WHO HAVE NO WHERE NEAR THE RÉSUMÉ OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA THIS SEASON WHO ARE IN THE NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT INSTEAD OF UGA.

Don’t give me this crap AJ-C that UGA is playing to be the 65th best team in America.

That’s BS.

Great logic, baloney….UGA was left out of the NCAA because the Gymdogs fill the Steg and they have empty seats for an NIT game. Since you obviously don’t have a clue, let me set you straight…school is out in Athens, there are no students there. I saw two games this year while the students were there and the place was packed. I also saw the Gymdogs a couple times and, yes, the two-time defending national champions packed the place…not with the fans you described, however. I didn’t see any perverted men there (where were you, baloney?).

BuLLdawg, all but a handful of the teams that you listed above received automatic bids for being mid-major conference champions. Consequently, UGA would probably beat most of them, but those are the tournament selection rules, big dog. Rarely do teams from the major conferences get at-large bids when their RPI is above 45-50 and have fewer than 19-20 Division wins. Given that there are 31 automatic bids received by conference champions, that leaves only 34 slots available for at-large bids.

Fragile? That’s the problem. AF players LOOK small and fragile, but they’re tough as nails. I recall a recent Wake Forest team coming to town, and they were all pointing and smirking at how small and white our players were. Then they were humbled…severely. There are several 7 foot centers (one team has two) in the conference, and they never have it easy against AF’s smothering defense. You won’t “outphysical” AF, and if that’s the only reason you think GA will win, then prepare to get smoked!

By Buck Cochran in the NW

March 16, 2007 1:40 PM | Link to this

The Dawgs are going to have o do something that they have a hard time doing and that is play with discipline on “D” and on”O” as well. I don’t know how many of you remember that offense that Princeton use to run but they took a ton of player with less talent and beat a bunch of people. Stukes hit his 3s but we played offense with other people to help out against Fresno and we’ll need the same thing plus if we don’t play a disciplined “D” we’re history. Altitude will be a problem and I hope the team is already out there. If any of our players think “I’m better than that other guy so we’ll win” then it’s always a longer flight home. We must play as a team like no other game we’ve played this season.

You flatlanders can’t handle the altitude in the Springs (7000 feet at the Academy) - those threes won’t be falling against AFA, and the Dawgs will be sucking wind by halftime.

I am a Tech fan who lives in Colorado Springs, and I am in the military. I moved out here a year ago and it took me almost 2 weeks to get fully accustomed to the altitude change. Climbing a flight of stairs gets you winded, even if you are in great shape. I am sure the conditioning of the players will help offset some of the problems.

I will be at the game Monday cheering on the Falcons of course.

Just FYI on why the Olympic Training Center is here. The Center, being around 6500 feet above sea level is the optimum training grounds for any athlete. Being this high your body produces more red blood cells thus creating a greater oxygen capacity. When they go to compete at lower altitudes their performance is better. It is like a natural steroid (without taking drugs) for your body.

I got DirecTV and have had no problems at all, even during the numerous snow storms we had out here. Unless you get their premium package you won’t get ESPNU. Otherwise you can order the sports package for $12/mo which give you that channel and most if not all the RSN’s.

Dawgs 07: I hope we win… but don’t kid yourself about Air Force. Yes, they have a bunch of kids that are not world class athletes and UGA’s athletes are much better.

What they do have is one of the very best coaches in the country and kids that work together as a team, sacrifice, and have a work ethic and character that any team would envy.

In my opinion… they can beat any team in the country on any given day. We appear to rely heavily on three point shooting and if that is off, we could be in real trouble.

By I-DOG

March 20, 2007 7:24 PM | Link to this

I am NOT happy the Dawgs lost, but I am not surprised that Air Force dominated us so badly last night.

Coach B. completely outcoached Coach Felton and held the Dawgs to just 53 points (fifty something, may be off by one or two?)

We can’t say… Oh it is because OUR players were hoping to get into the NCAA. Air Force was in the top 15 much of the year and must have been as devestated as anyone not to get in the NCAA tourney.

I “like” Felton and think he has done a good job, but he is not in the same class as Coach B of Air Force. We were dominated with inferior athletes all over the floor.

I think it is important for UGA to make the big dance next year. Otherwise it will be hard to get fan interest to a level that will help build the program.
