UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Time for a football nugget or two

We interrupt the filling out of your brackets for a football thought or two.

First of all, I’m interested in finding out how our most loyal readers feel about spring football. As you all know, coach Mark Richt’s Bulldogs have been going at it over there at Woodruff Practice Fields for a couple of weeks now. Well, four practices to be exact.

They’re off this week for spring break. Pretty nice of Coach Richt, if you think about it, to let his guys loose for a week in the middle of it.

When the Dogs reconvene next week, they’ll have 11 practices left, including G-Day on April 7 at Sanford Stadium.

My question is, do you care? Is spring football practice something you’d like to see us cover like we cover the practices in the fall? Are you looking for daily features and updates or do you just want to know if somebody gets injured? What are some of the storylines you might want to see us address this spring?

What about G-Day? You want to see Sanford Stadium half-full like some of these other football-crazy schools’ spring games?

In the meantime, don’t forget that it’s Dogs vs. Dogs in the first round of the NIT tonight at 7 p.m. (ESPN2). Think Georgia’s going to be up for it? Let’s hear some score predictions.

I’d like to see the full gambit covered in the spring. Knowing the different story lines like who is impressing the coaches, who is slacking, who are we missing, is something I would definitely follow.

Chip it matters not what time of the year it is, we are always wanting updates and the skinny on the dawgs and coach Richt. Especially with the addition of all of the early entry studs and how they look, hit, run, catch….you get the point. You’re the reporter, how can you ask such a rhetorical question??? Yes Feltons dawgs will come to play tonight and run Fresno out. West Coast team on our turf with our guys wanting more…don’t think it will be close. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!

I’m surprised you’re asking these questions Chip. You know us. We’re GEORGIA fans. We ALWAYS want to hear about FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL and more FOOTBALL…Please hurry up September…..

They leave their car flags on ALL YEAR LONG!! And NOW!!! This Bruce Pearl thing. They already had Pat Summitt. I’m in hell. For the Love of God, please give me some Georgia football coverage.

I love to hear about all sports (BB especially). However, football is a daily indepth must!!

Thank you for the coverage so far.

Coverage, should be more in depth. With emphasis on individual players, and coaches. Also, what I am amazed at is the number of players from the state playing outside the SEC. Example, running back from Oklahoma State from Columbus, Ga. and an offensive tackle from Gwinnett County who played at Maryland this year will be a high draft pick- heaven knows we have been in need of OL’s for awhile-how do these guys get away????

AJC, coverage is pretty poor across the board. Does anyone realize that Georgia is number 1 in both men’s and women’s tennis-NOT ONE ARTICLE IN THE AJC-PATHETIC!!!

Best bulldog coverage is provided by David Ching, Josh Kendall, and at times athensonline.com - AJC is the source of last resort!!!

Without the spring football reports we won’t have a real feel for who is moving up the depth chart. That is the biggest thing in spring I want to hear. Now there is so many postions up for grabs, it will be great to hear the battles going on. I am looking forward to some new stars coming out on the defense, Like Curran , Battle,Jones to name a few. We need to hear everything and more, we are all football CRAZY….GO DAWGS

Chip, As long as it’s about the team and players (and not the scoreboard or other mundane stuff), you know we will hang on every word. We need YOU to talk to the coaches since most of us have those pesky restraining orders. Ok, I’m kidding, but you get it. Most of us DO consider spring practice important, because that’s where the team chemistry formulates each year and where leaders step up. I would say this year, most of us want to know about all those awesome redshirts from the 2006 signing class. Will we REALLY be better off for holding them out a year?

The round ball Dawgs better bring their”A” game tonight. Mark my words, they have a couple of inside types who’ll trap Brown down deep and I hope he gets help………Football? The more the merrier. I want to know how Moreno is doing. The “OL” has several battles taking place. Is Martinez going to continue to use the same “D” he has before. That could be a diaster(SP) but his overall performance is of real interest to me so bring it on. But 1st things 1st. LET’S WIN TONIGHT AND COME OUT WEST AND DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE OTHER BULL DOGS.

Chip,

As limited as they are, I read every “practice note” on the Georgiadogs.com site, whenever they have them. I would love to have more in-depth articles available. And, I would love coverage of the other sports that I can only find on that site, like Tennis, Swimming and Diving, Equestrian, etc. If it is about the Dawgs, then I want to read it.

By Buck Cochran in the NW

March 14, 2007 8:14 PM | Link to this

War Eagle, let’s start with what Logan Gray has said. I fully expect to “RS” my freahman year behind Stafford and learn. There’s been no mention of doing anything else. He needs to bulk up, learn the system etc. Now, here comes my “Limb Time”. From the QB position he can run and he’s also played WR. A hunch, Bobo may try to get him on the field as a true freshman doing things like end around, catching the ball from a WR spot. As we see with Moreno, even though he’s gone through the RS year Bobo says he still has to learn the system. Logan Gray can play in spot situations using his talen and still not take away his desire to play QB. He would then be a battle tested veteran in his Soph. year……….Quick note: the Dawgs are playing the the “Ocean”, bring Brown out to the foul line and a couple of other things I posted the other day. another nice drive. This Dawg team is playing a different type of offense.

By Buck Cochran in the NW

March 14, 2007 9:09 PM | Link to this

Good show Dawgs! Felton made some changes in his “O” tonight and they showed. I saw other people moving around the court and shooting the ball. The big men didn’t stay bunched in underneath and the ball movement was very good. We should play Air Force and if we play like tonight we’ll win. I think we’d won even without Stukes 3s but man could both teams shoot the rock.

My wife and I live in Texas but we will be at the G-day game. Does that give you a glue? The AJC should have a writer cover UGA football that cares as much about it as Dawg fans do. Then you wouldn’t have to ask such a silly question.

Springs games are OK but if they wanted to really make it interesting and the almighty NCAA would OK it the best spring games would be against one of our rivals. Say one spring against Ga Tech or another against Aubarn or maybe against Tennessee. Anyway it would gernerate more interest and you could still keep it loose with requirements such as mandatory substitutions such as 1st string against 1st string etc. I think people would love to see it and the schols could desingnate the profits to a charity. Anyone agree?

Plenty of stories, plenty of intrigue, plenty of people who are interested.

Football season? No such thing. It is a year round sport. In the Spring, it’s spring practice and the G-Day game. Summer means mat drills and practicng for the Fall games. Fall speaks for itself. Let the games begin! Although recruiting lasts all year, Winter is when it reaches a fever pitch and coaches find out if their hours upon hours of kissing up to high schoolers has been worth the effort. And there is also no such thing as too much coverage of college football. Like the man said, “I like it, I love it, I want some more of it!”

Chip,

In an attempt to put some perspective on Spring football, here is a nugget for you. I am passing up free Masters tickets in order to pay for the privilege of attending the G-Day game. It took all of 5 seconds to make the choice and this is from someone who would someday like to have his ashes scattered on Augusta National.

Yes, please give us more coverage. Only the ignorant ignore the fact that the foundation of every college football team (good or bad) is being molded during spring practice. This is when your new leaders appear, when the team’s attitude is formed and young players finally get the opportunity to showcase their abilities. The 2007 season’s stars are being created during spring practice. Please give us more coverage.

I would love to hear about how certain guys are looking, impressing, not impressing, hurt. Anything that would be of interest. I don’t care to hear that “today the QBs threw and the RB ran,and then they lifted weights.” I kinda like the idea of having a speedy QB like Gray. Although I don’t think I would agree to move him to WR. A predecessor (sp?) to MS needs to be groomed and his speedy behind might just be the guy!

Not to mention, spring is a very important time when some folks start plotting and figuring out how they can claim to be a lot smarter than all of the other fans AND coaches combined. What I can’t figure out is, without any questions at QB now, what in the world will some folks call others blind and stupid about this year? I’m sure the opportunity will present itself.

I would like a complete breakdown of spring practice. I think with the way things have been going in recent years, football is quickly becoming a 365 day a year coverage event. You see this in professional football with the NFL network and I personally can’t get enough football, college or pro. Considering I’m a Die-hard Dawg fan I want as much information as is humanly possible.

One group that the ajc must give more in depth couverage to during spring ball are the true freshmen who come on campus early looking to play as true freshman. We have what 6-8 on campus now? You can bet we’ll see more of this in the future and it’ll require more in depth couverage and maybe more man power. This will be a jumping spring with all the JUCO’s plus the true freshman trying to crack the starting line up. With all of the above, spring ball will be more important than ever.

Chip, I think you get the picture! How about some in-depth interviews with Van Halagen (sp)on conditioning, who’s impressing. Player interviews. Mike Bobo’s philosophy of offense and is it impacting the team this Spring. I, too, turn to David Ching as the consumate writer on Georgia football. The AJC needs a Dawg stringer like DOB is to the Braves. One of your few “real” sports writers. D’Allesio has a good start on a year round recruiting blurb that is impressive. Just report..use your imagination..it’s your career, not a part time blog!

Did everyone read the 10 question interview of incoming freshman LB Charles White on one of the other AJC blogs? Man, am I glad we are recruiting guys like this. It’s one thing to achieve signing top-notch athletes but it’s a huge plus to sign guys with this type of attitude. To hear a guy talking about being committed to doing whatever it takes to help Georgia win a National Championship is something else. From some players it might sound premature or like empty rhetoric, but this guy sounds legitimate to me. A winner on and off the field… Go DAWGS!

I have wondered for a long time why the AJC cannot see what a windfall it would be to provide positive, in-depth coverage of UGA and maybe even Ga-Tech atheletics. Instead, we get an occasional “in depth” story on a player who is ridiculed because he has a learning disability and trying to use legal and NCAA sanctioned options to better himself.

There are many of us who would go back to subscribing to the paper if for no other reason than to “collect” stories and photographs that may be worth framing and adding to our UGA worship centers that we have spent thousands of dollars building in our basements and bonus rooms. Athensonline.com and others have stories and photos that are so good that I have printed, framed and given as Christmas gifts. Sounds cheap, but we have a “chinese auction” at Christmas and my framed gifts are the most sought after of all the other gifts available. What self respecting Dawg Fan doesn’t have a picture of Uga taking a bite at the Auburn player, framed on his wall next to the Hershel Walker signed jersey?

Positive and in-depth coverage could even help recruiting, which I’m sure the AJC doesn’t care about, but its readership, which would be rabid and loyal to a paper who cared about their subscribers wants and needs, would love it.

Thanks for blogging on this site. Perhaps you could e-mail me sometime to discuss a good friend of mine that also played at UGA during those years. Chip:

Like Dawg Faced Boy, I too would like to hear about the progression of individual players that we don’t know much about yet. True Freshman, RF and guys who just haven’t played yet, but we hope can contribute.

Specifically, I would love to know about Tony Wilson, Kiante Trippe, The three OL redshirted last year in Perez and Both Davis’. What do their position coaches think? what do other players think of their progress?

The other thing that would be incredible and not that hard to give us would be the strength and conditioning chart that shows weights, bench press, squat etc… from the last official measurement to the current.

The guy that ran the grapevine gave us that each year and it was fantastic.

If Perez bench press was 350 last year and jumped to 400lbs, I want to know about it! That means he is SEC ready. If it went from 325 to 330, that tells a different story…

It may seem silly to you, but believe me if you did both of the things I mentioned, Dawg Fans would be impressed with the improvement in your coverage.

Here is a taste of the type of tidbits we should get after every Spring practice. This came from the DawgVent:

“Guys if CSS cant get these guys ready to play than nobody can… he coaches so hard and busts those guys butts… they were all hating life the last 2 days… i talked with several UGA old timers that were there and the buzz around practice is what a diff in the O line coaching, drills, and intensity… its just awesome!

CSS was not happy with Vance, and Josh Davis effort in some drills… and he actually bumped Sturdivant up the depth chart for this practice… Vance and Josh were getting hell from CSS.

Cheese is our best and most athletic lineman and he is providing a huge leadership role on the line. Cheese and Velasco were the only guys that got a compliment from CSS today

Bean did ALOT better today…. he blew his guy off the ball in drills but CSS did not let up on him but CSS showed him at least a little love today but not much…

Sturdavant has great feet but he has to get stronger…

CSS is a tactician and watches every detail of the drills and if one guy does it wrong they all do it over… you could tell the young guys and the juco guys were NOT used to the intensity and preciseness… bean and some others were about to puke yesterday from running drills so hard and doing them over and over because of mental mistakes

Receivers dropped some more balls today but looked better…

AJ and Sean stood out running routes, speed, and size… those guys just glide.

Tony Wilson is seeing a nutritionist for his weight issue… still too heavy.

Brian McClendon told me that when he got released by the Bears coach richt called him and asked to come be a grad assistant and he is really loving it and encouraging and coaching guys… great kid… and he is working on his masters.

Coach Bobo and looks so happy walking around the practice field.

Coach Van is hilarious… he is always cracking jokes.

Thomas Flowers has become a vocal leader… even though he is the green jersey… he is out there yelling encouragement to the guys all over the field.

Antavious Coates is so tall and built he is a speciman… wow.

Rashad Jones dominated in drills and has the best looking body of any dback! man he lit up some recievers in drills today… he looked awesome

Banks looks great too!

Asher is so quick and fast and had a pick today that was amazing… and he was untouchable on punt return practice… i wish he could play the slot cause he has really got some moves

Mikey caught a quick pass and burned several guys with lightning quick moves.

Kenneth Harris caught the ball and ran after catch great today.

Duke Ward looks like Leornard Pope all over but he is faster… but in the meetings he had ice always on his shoulder (that worries me).

Corey Irvan had the best day by far of all the GMC guys he made some great plays on the live 7 on 7 inside drills.

BRANDON MILLER killed people today he had 2 huge hits… wow! he did get burned a little by tight ends in the middle but Martinez and Jancek were coaching him up cause he is so new in the middle… he knocked jason johnson into next week and got Knowshon pretty good in the 11 on 11.

GET THIS… Knowshon ran all day with the #1’s, yes first team, he is our best back by far… very fast, quick and explosive… all the coaches watching were amazed

Lump looked good too but Knowshon runs hard like Cadallic ran.

Shaw oline coach did a session today and said that big Bruce Figgins is so far ahead of any tight end he has ever coached in HS especially in the blocking area… he said Bruce can put on a clinic and can make every block there is on the best competition

Banks did not show alot today but its still early… Rashad seemed way ahead to me.

Battle, Lomax and Howard looked fast and good and gave great effort…

Coach Fab yanked Wynn out and cussed him out and told him he had guys 220 that were better than him… he was all in wynn’s junk big time.

Our linebackers look freakish… WOW Miller, Elerbe, Dent and Dew are so fast… Ellerbe covered knowshon out of the backfield on a streak like a dback and almost picked it… Stafford was impressed with their speed (i heard him telling Joe Cox)

Coach Ball was spending alot of time with Knowshon coaching him up in a good way.

Lump looked a little down not to be with the #1s.

The scrimmage was amazingly fun and intense… an electric atmosphere

Rennie was there getting fired up big time watching the live stuff.

Clint Boling is a great kid… i talked to him for a while and i was very impressed! His eyes got huge watching the Oline intensity… he said… “man thats intense” he has gotta gain weight but i am sure he will.

Charles White was there with Rennie too and watched it all in awe.

Brandon Sutherland power running was awesome… no one wants a piece of him… one guy pushed him and Brandon body slammed him so fast and hard it was impressively scary.

Coach talked with them very seriously about staying out of trouble over spring break and making good decisions and not drinking.

Coach Richt started a new punishment for guys that make dumb mistakes… like offsides, fumbles, etc. the guy has to find coach richt and do “up downs” until he says stop and explain the mistake… CMR told Vance this is D1 now and this is GA get it together!

Most Impressive things to me:

  1. Brandon Miller’s hits and dominating presence… his hit stopped practice there was so much celebrating.

  2. Knowshon… he is amazing.

  3. Rashad Jones body type and speed looks like a pro safety.

  4. CSS period… def not a players coach right now, these guys are in boot camp! He is my fav coach.

  5. Secondary attitude and intensity… wow.

  6. Speed of the linebackers… ask the qbs.

  7. Coach Fabs rampages on the dline

Disappointing stuff not much it was a great day! dropped passes starting safetys were getting tested pretty good… Kelin and Byrd missed a few tackles but not bad lots of penaltys… offsides alot! but its only the first week.”

Nice answer Buck, they need you on the placement staff…Loran is a good athlete, Auburn though they can had him committed, but he ran to Athens. I hope he does well except a fumble or two against Auburn would really be nice…

Staug Dawg, It was 44-0 in 1982 UGA over FL.Remember it well, TV Showed half the stadium Red and Black, and the other side gone home. Those were good days.

Chip your question is so patently ridiculous that I know you were joking when you asked it. If not, then you are getting in touch with your inner ignorant slut.

I wake up and check for football updates. I check several times daily. I am obsessed by Georgia football. And I have been for most of my 47 years.

Yeah, a little extra coverage would be nice. Pass the ice tea. Not five o’clock yet.

I don’t think Knowshon will be the starter to begin the season, because that’s not how CMR rolls, but I do expect him to get significant playing time if he proves himself on game day.

Man, I just hope and pray that Moreno can stay healthy and keep good grades. I predict that he will bring back a dimension to our offense that we have been missing for a long time. If he runs like they say he can, he will take a lot of pressure off of Stafford and even Lump and the other backs. I understand that a lot of folks want to see Stafford pass all day, and I look forward to seeing him mature into a great QB… But damn… I love power football.

It would really help for those of us who don’t live as close to Athens or have the access you do,tell us about the ones who are showing a measure of improvement that no one could forsee and may be producers in the fall.

Hey Chip, got your answer yet?

My prediction, Moreno is the second coming of Garrison Hearst. He will open up more lanes for Stafford than can ever be imagined. And when Lump is in, oh it has to be a pass, Lump will get his yards too. This is my 2007 Buck Cochran prediction. Hey he predicted the Stafford scenario last year, my turn on Moreno.

Stay well Buck, we love you man.

Anybody reads anything other than concern for a fellow Dawg in that and I will come whip your (expletive deleted by ajc censors).

DawgByte…. good stuff brah. Keep’em coming.

C’mon Chip more football! Some of my Tenn buddies are calling me.. talking some trash and talk mostly about SEC football and the whole NCAA football. You need to get you a tv/radio show and broadcast only football all year round. I’ll call it “Chips Football Show”… a show that never stop. Talk football ‘till you drop.

C’mon I want some more football coverage.

BTW.. good job coach Felton. How ‘bout them lady dogs! Shall we dance all the way to sweet 16 or elite 8?

Mahalo!

Yes, I’m very interested in practice news. Coach Richt seems to be pretty candid whether things are going well or if they could be better. So I’d like to know. Of course, ultimately, we all want a Nat’l Championship and everybody to be an All-American but I’ll be watching, come what may.

I’d like to see more coverage of spring ball along with your typical features. Information on the development of players that are stepping into starting roles for the first time, development of freshman who have enrolled early, reports on how different units are coming along (DBs, WRs, QBs, etc) and of course injury updates. Also, maybe a page with updates on the depth chart and any changes since the bowl game. Probably just as much as you can write I’ll read. Go Dawgs!

I do not know if it is legal, but it would be nice if Uga. had a scrimmage with Georgia Southern to conclude spring practice. It might perk up the players to work a little harder.

Hey Hershal, lay off of Chip. HE IS A DAWG. He went to UGA and is always accused of being a “homer”. He gives us more insight than any other beat writer we have had in a long time. Keep up the good work Chip.

Caleb King - I think it’s been quite long enough for any good news about King’s test grade. Good news would have been trumpeted from one end of dawgdom to the other. One can only anticipate the alternative, unfortunately.

NC Dawg . Your on to something there. The dearth of info on him is very unsettling. If he doesn’t “make the grade”this year then I really hope he get that stuff straightened out and comes on board next year. Moreno from what I’ve been reading is coming along very well and I’m looking forward to seeing him this year.

AJ Alexander out of Altoona Pa. is turning heads EVERYWHERE with his blazing speed. The Dawgs have an offer on the table for him…and truth be told,if he wants the exposure and to play against top competition EVERY week. Then it’s a no brainer. To heck with ND, Pitt and Penn State. Any true football fan KNOWS where the best ball is played- the S.E.C!!!!!

p.s. CANDYbilt and KenTURKEY can go to hell..they got lucky
