UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Vols will have fans’ support

I did a radio show for a Knoxville station earlier today and, sure enough, they tell me that Tennessee is again bringing a couple of charter buses full of fans to Stegeman Coliseum for Saturday’s game against Georgia.

If the Vols win again, however, the players and coaches won’t run up into the stands to celebrate with their fans. Thanks to last year’s escapades, the SEC now forbids teams from going into the stands. And it’s a good thing. I could see a ticked off SEC fan, his team just beaten by UT or some other rival, and here comes a big 6-8 forward who just put up a 20 and 10 walking by. The devil on the fan’s shoulder says, “Trip him, trip him. That’ll show him.” And there goes Joe All-American, tumbling down the aisle from the upper deck.

To Bruce Pearl’s credit, he has said more than once he’s sorry he told his players to do that last year.

Don’t know how far that apology goes with the Bulldogs, though.

Anyway, I’m eager to see which Georgia team awaits the Vols, the one that fell meekly to them in Knoxville back in January or the one that fought like mad in the second half despite being shorthanded and overmatched at Kentucky.

The Bulldogs’ team chemistry is, in my opinion, the biggest question as it embarks on this last challenge of the season. Levi Stukes’ lack of remorse for getting suspended for what was an extremely pivotal Kentucky game is the type of thing that can really splinter a team.

What do you guys think? Can the Dogs take the Vols?

Will it be enough to spark a run in the SEC tournament and on into the NCAA tournament? Or do you think they’ve hit the proverbial wall?

Or would you rather talk about spring football practice, which begins Monday?

I think for the most part UGA fans are dumb.

Chip- I think this game suits UGA well. Senior Night/Day, they need the win for a possible berth, a little payback for last year, Stukes back, Vols coming off an unbelievably emotional game. Felton’s such a good coach, I’d be very surprised if UGA came out flat. However, I think if they win tomorrow and Thursday, they’ll still likely need one more win to feel good about a berth, and that would likely mean beating Florida on Friday. That would be a difficult chore.

Chip - what’s the deal on Levi Stukes’ lack of remorse? Did he not think it was a big deal?

UGA needs to win the UT game, plus probably 2 in the SEC tourney. I’m not sure how the tiebreakers would fall, but the 5th seed in the East is a terrible place to be because we would have to play the 4th team in the West (that doesn’t matter) but the second round game would be with the Gators.

Baloney, living up to your lowly reputation as always… .

Probably a better question for today: Obviously Levi Stukes was not very remorseful in his comments about being suspended for the Kentuckyk game. Felton said the senior would be reinstated, suit up for the Tennessee game and be recognized beforehand on Senior Day. But Felton did NOT say whether Stukes would play or how much. Meanwhile, Terrance Woodbury played really well in Stukes’ absence at Rupp. So should Stukes start and go back to playing as much as he did before or should Felton limit his playing time according to Stukes’ attitude.

Drew - The Gators might not be a bad team to play right now.

Let Stukes start, and sit Humprhey. I’m not saying that in a bad way for Billy, but having him Gaines and Stukes start as they did the games leading up to Kentucky is dumb. Start Woodbury his size and athletic ability helps since Mercer is gone. This also allows the Dawgs to bring a scholarship guard off the bench. Having all three of them on the court will tire them out. I like how Butler plays but it seems at times against Kentucky we were scared to give him the ball. If Humphrey comes off the bench that gives us a three guard rotation with adequate rest time for each player. Stukes,Gaines,Humphrey,Newman, and Brown will likely start with it being senior night. As far as the SEC goes I would like to see the lineup be: Gaines, Stukes, Woodbury, Brown, and Singleton. Now I know yall will say you would rather see Dave Liability Bliss than Singleton, but I believe the Dawgs are 7-2 when Singleton starts. He rebounds well and plays good defense, but he will not attack the basket. Go Dawgs, and 9-7 with one SEC win will get the Dawgs in.

Baloney, you’re dumb.

As much as I’d like for this team to win for all the right reasons (adversity this season, weathering a tough schedule, retribution for what the Tennessee players pulled in the Stegeman game), I just think the team is mentally and physically fatigued and, as a result, you’ve seen them fade down this home stretch. If we’re going to win, it’s gonna take a monumental defensive effort (if we don’t stop Chris Lofton, it’s gonna be a long night) and a reduction in turnovers. We also need to work the inside game and not rely on so many three pointers. When we make them, we can make them, but when we’re missing, the game can get out of hand in a hurry.

Also, we need our bigs to step up. Takais Brown, specifically, needs to command the low post and make better, quicker decisions. He’s one of the better offensive rebounders in the league, but a lot of our turnovers come when he has problems catching the ball in the low post or when he makes one of those slow moves to the basket and gets the ball swiped by an opposing wing player.

And for God’s sake, someone please tell Billy Humphrey to get with the program and stop jacking it up from three-point land!

Regarding Stukes, I hope Felton lets him play limited minutes. I’d be steamed if I disciplined a player and he came back the next few days and took a nonchalant, callous attitude about not only what he did, but tried to call out the coach in the process. That type of behavior shouldn’t be tolerated. And if I know Felton, he’ll have the last laugh, not Stukes!!

Go DAWGS!

I just read the article at the onlineathens site (thanks guys). Wow, Stukes does seem to be harboring some frustration about this situation (and possibly more). Felton doesn’t seem to be the type to take this reaction lightly, but it would be quite a statement to make a guy miss out on playing in his last home game. ALl in all, though, I think you have to sit the player.

Dawgs win unless Pearl goes shirtless for his own game. If he does that, they will win the national championship.

Recognize and thank Stukes for his contribution to this team and to this program, and then sit his a— on the bench, because for someone who isn’t going to be drafted this summer, he obviously thinks he’s far too big for his britches, and he obviously thinks he’s bigger than the team, and his wants override the team’s needs. Thank him, and then sit him, and continue to sit him until he gets it through his thick head that he’s not bigger than anyone in this program. It’s only fair, I say.

Just thinking out loud here, but with the trouble UGA has had energizing a basketball fan base, even when they’ve had good players, teams, and coaches, perhaps UGA could use a Bruce Pearl-esuqe coach (someone who leads his players through the stands, shows up at women’s games with his chest painted, et al)?

Chip,

Why do you always have to make it a “This or That” proposition? You know, most of us here are true Dawg Fans. I know we don’t voice our displeasure as loudly as the yokals who are just football fans, but we are the majority, and we love all of the Dawg teams. So how about we talk about BOTH? Or how about ALL? I mean, the girl’s team is the No. 2 seed in their tournament, and no one is talking about that, and they should. I know Tennessee is looking like they’re going to win it all this year on that side, but the Lady Dawgs could surprise a lot of people, win the SEC and maybe make an Elite 8 or Final 4 appearance this year. They’re good, and also very worth talking about. Stop listening to the idiot only football fans, Chip. They’re the loudmouth minority. If they get fed up and leave the blog because it isn’t football 24/7, well, wouldn’t that be a good thing anyway?

Although I’m still not totally sold on Coach Felton, we don’t need another Bruce Pearl. But I will admit that Felton’s done a great job of bringing the Dawgs back to respectability. I just need to see more evidence that he intends to stay here and keep building and try to lure more talent to Athens each and every year. I know that’s a tough assignment after the way the Harricks screwed us over … but it’s reality and we have to deal with it. Just win baby, and I might add win consistently and not screw over the program or see it as a steppingstone to another job and the fans will follow. If Tubby would have stayed he would have built the program into a consistent contender and probably ended up as the patron saint of Georgia basketball. Now Coach Felton has that opportunity if he’s willing to stay here and overcome all the adversity that has plagued Georgia basketball in recent years. A talented coach, like Felton seems to be, who sees Georgia as his career opportunity and wants to stay here is the cornerstone the program needs if we ever hope to be a yearly contender and draw consistently large crowds of Dawg fans. It all begins with the coach.

Chip, who would be the SEC East #4 if the following happened on Sat:

*UGA beat Tenn *Florida beat Kentucky

All three teams (UGA, Tenn & Ken) would be 9-7 in conference, tied in head-to-head and have a 5-5 SEC East division record.

Thanks

59bulldawg- Is having a good coach enough in Athens, though? They’ve had good to very good teams in the past, but still seem to have fallen short in building intensity. Would it help to have a charismatic coach (like him or not, Pearl is a character, the UT fans adore him, and the media are fascinated with him) for UGA?

I was the one who posted the onlineathens.com story. So far everyone appears to jumping Stukes butt. OK, but I’m still wondering. Stukes was the 1st player that Felton signed. Help me here, does anyone recall Stukes being a problem at any time in the last 4 years? I don’t. Did Stukes flip out all of a sudden? I’m asking these questions because I don’t think it’s fair to all of sudden condem a guy who’s given Ga. his best. He mentioned other problems this season, that brings up a question for Chip. Are you aware of an attitude problem with Stukes or team problems this season? I’m not defending anybody but I think a few more questions should be asked before we tar and feather the guy.

All stories have two sides… if some strength coach was up his rear end and he felt like defending himself - then i say fine. It’s Felton’s team, so if he felt the need to suspend him a game - fine again.

Just remember, a really good 3 point shooter needs to have his legs, and right now, Levi got a week off. I say start him on senior night and let him shoot!

I’ll wait until later but Bobo had some very interesting comments to make regarding Moreno being new and having to learn the system. Chip you know where I’ll be headed with this one but for now let beat the Vols. Felton needs to put his best defensive player onMartin? then tell the other 4 players to play basketball. Reptiles didn’t do thst and the Vols got into their flow and couldn’t be stopped. Must not let them play their brand of ball and stopping Martin is a must.

It’s a road game for us, so I’ll adopt the Felton theory of being somewhat pessimistically optimistic… UT needs to play in front of a hostile crowd so as to ready them for what may come their way in the weeks ahead…So get loud at your place…Go Vols, both men AND women

If Stukes yelled at a coach and then could not even show proper remorse, I don’t think I would even let him dress out. You can’t put up with players yelling at the staff, especially seniors. Has he not learned anything in his four years under Felton? If anybody should know better, it is Stukes. He was Felton’s first recruit. How hard is it to suck it up for your teammates, who need you. What did Stukes say about the incident?

By Chip Towers

March 2, 2007 11:44 PM | Link to this

VERY good question, Matt. Here is the answer:

If Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee are all tied at 9-7, all three teams would finish 2-2 in head-to-head matchups. Georgia and Tennessee would have 5-5 division records and Kentucky would be 4-6 in the division. Tennessee’s 1-1 record versus Florida would be the tiebreaker to earn the East No. 3 seed. Georgia would be the East No. 4 seed and Kentucky the East No. 5 seed.

Okay. I just read Chip’s story on Stukes’ so-called apology. He seems really bitter about the whole situation, as if there was some overreaction on Felton’s part. He also seemed to insinuate that this is a recurring issue with Felton. I wonder if other players feel the same way and I wonder if this had anything to do with Toney transferring. It wasn’t as if Toney wasn’t getting playing time.

I can’t figure it out guys. We have the size and athletic advantage in this game, yet our guards seem to play poorly against the Vols. Matthew in the “I have yet to Graduate Center” still hates on the “football only” fans, which he should. Here is how I see it: Start Stukes and Newman, they have put up with more than any seniors in the history of UGA. If we win, hoestly I think we are in. The “experts” say we aren’t but then again they aren’t athletes they are the media, they have never played sports. We got in with a 7-9 record in 01, and we would have been a 2 seed with a 11-5 record in 03. Georgia is the 5th team to come out of the SEC this year, and if you don’t think so then you are just ignorant and you probably still think WMD’s are in Iraq.

I have had issues with Dennis Felton’s decision-making many times, and I have to agree with Levi Stukes on several issues of his suspension for raising his voice about not lifting weights with some unnamed staff member who isn’t in Levi Stukes’ class and never will be.

The resultant loss against an infinitely beatable Kentucky team Wednesday puts Georgia and Georgia Tech right back today side-by-side in NCAA RPI. Georgia has a slight advantage at RPI 52 and Tech RPI 54 as of Saturday 3 March 2007.

http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_Men.html

On the men’s side, Georgia’s Andy Landers indeed did win his 25th game convincingly last night and should be a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament instead of Stanford whom Georgia not only beat, but also has 4 wins over top 19 teams to Stanford’s only 2 wins over top 25 teams.

http://www.collegerpi.com/women/

It’s an impressive résumé for Andy Landers, who finds Angel Robinson a huge addition along with Tasha Humphrey and Ashley Houts along with Janese Hardrick. In fact, Georgia Lady Bulldogs have 8 wins over RPI Top 50, again twice as many as Stanford whom Andy Landers beat. 2 seed. Today against Vandie, whom Andy Landers beat in a stomp in their only other meeting this season. Vandie is ranked Number 10 and UGA Number 8. UGA also has the Number 8 SOS and Number 8 RPI. Stanford’s higher ranking in the polls, is so much BS. Andy Landers with Cori Chambers and Megan Darrah can do a lot of things. One he didn’t do this year was sign the top players in state again, like he normally does; but, then again, where would their minutes come from on such a young team ?

I look for some big plays and improvement from Matthew Stafford this season to increase our Number 90 NCAA Offense of Last Season.

Paul Oliver is All-America.

Brandon Coutu is as well, if he can keep from injuring himself in practice kicking on-side kicks.

I expect to see big things from CJ Byrd and Reshad Jones and wonder why both are at Free Safety and not the other at Strong Safety.

We are well-stocked at linebacker for a team that just lost all 3 from last season, and I expect to finally see Brandon Miller do something this senior season.

At DE, I am just not certain.

I look for big seasons for Jeff Owens, Kade Weston and Ricardo Crawford on the defensive line.

We are in great shape on the Offensive Line, Fullback and Running Backs, and again this season as last season too, as a direct result, there is no excuse for Number 90 Offense.

I look for great strides by NaDerris Ward at TE and by those behind Kelin Johnson, several of them.

We are well-stocked at wide receiver, and should see many 4-wide receiver sets, especially with the drop-off at TE.

10-3 again is my prediction for this team this year, as it was for this team last year, as we just have too many questions about Matthew Stafford’s inconsistent turnover plagued year of 13 interceptions with only 7 TD passes and 10 fumbles (6 lost) with only 3 TDs running.

Why were we Number 90 in NCAA Offense?

Duh.

The 2nd biggest concern in the off-season was with really 3 players played whom we recruited last year, despite desperate needs for many more to have seen the field, we saw a huge drop-off in those who might have competed for playing time this coming season – them looking at all the guys who should have played last year they and I thought who did not. We will see those redshirt freshman this season have huge impacts.

And, we had better play some true freshmen this season for a change, or we will be right back behind every single team in the SEC in recruiting again next season. Coach Richt has to get over this Redshirt all the guys mind frame while having noting but questions about the one true freshman he did play last season, giving up his All-America Senior Season, when he of all people in America, was the least ready to be put in the Starting Role at the most visible position on the team.

Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia: As a heralded freshman Stafford struggled early and bounced in and out of the starting lineup. But he settled in late and passed for 519 yards and three touchdowns with only one interception in leading the Bulldogs to three straight victories to close the season. That solid finish indicates he may be on the verge of becoming the quarterback he’s expected to be.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=AsYdd.L3Rruohh5WNSfrp8Jt1LYF?slug=rivals-100775&prov=rivals&type=lgns

The big question: Can Matthew Stafford pick up where he left off?: After struggling for much of his freshman season, Stafford ended the year by directing the Bulldogs to consecutive victories over Auburn, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Georgia’s hopes of contending for a Southeastern Conference title rest on whether Stafford can show why Rivals.com made him the No. 1 quarterback in the 2006 recruiting class.

It’s Spring Practice, while we mourn the Bluffton University Mennonite’s tragic 6 losses of their baseball team before dawn this morning, with an Ohio Charter bus driver getting off the out-of-date interchange of the downtown connector thinking he was on the I-85, not I-75, Southbound HOV bypass, and instead found himself face-to-face with the concrete 35 feet below the Northside Bridge never applying the brakes on top of a pickup truck. The bridge was being repaired yesterday afternoon and the cement below destroyed on the I-75 Southbound just before the downtown connector interchange. This will be a lawsuit over the very poor design of these HOV lanes into a downtown of a 5 million people city. All of our Interchanges must be completely properly reworked. I’m very sad to see the scene, confused by those HOV Lanes myself, along with everyone else. They are not properly designed and doubly poorly marked with proper signs. And, now a baseball team and University of 1000 students finds itself here with 6 dead and 29 some very badly injured. It had rained all day the day before and in the clearing was much water on the roadway to spray a windscreen, making the most poorly designed interchange in the city, even more difficult for a bus driver after already a 10 hour plus trip 666 miles from home trying to figure out Atlanta traffic signs. He cannot speak for himself, nor his wife. I will.

Instead of picking on Levi Stukes, and suggesting all kinds of gloom yet again, this time, because of your theory the team does not support Levi Stukes while stating a game which saw Mike Mercer take double-digit wild flings at the hoop making but 2 in the game at the vols’ gym is better described as a poor team effort, you might actually say something positive about Levi Stukes on Senior Day.

I’m sorry, but Dennis Felton and you are both wrong.

The vols would be 9-7 in the SEC with a win at home today by Levi Stukes taking the shots instead of Mike Mercer last time.

So would be The Bulldogs.

The vols have a fine RPI of Top 10 in the nation. The kind of performance Mike Mercer turned in against them up there a month ago, is not happening today now is it ?

Not by him, as the game up there in January.

Again as others have told you again in today’s blog here as they always do, you did not play basketball and don’t know that lifting weights before a game as the Shooting Guard, is totally incorrect coaching.

Expecting that he would be suspended over raising his voice to a nincompoop coach’s assistant over whether he should or should not be lifting weights just prior to Our Shooting Guard playing Kentucky Adolph Rupp Arena, is your theory not shared by Levi Stukes.

Nor by me.

I have support for him too.

Who knows more about this, Levi Stukes, or you Chipper ?

You sit there dishing it out telling us what a know-it-all you are, and calling readers out by name Chipper including dedicating complete blogs to nothing but that, have not one day determined that which is the news of the day to in fact discuss with regard to NCAA College Sports as it relates to Georgia this day, and now according to you the whole entire team agrees with you that Levi Stukes is just a horrible deadbeat malcontent tearing the team chemistry apart because it is his fault that you have no knowledge of about weight-lifting before you play as the Shooting Guard at Rupp Arena.

BS.

And, what he did was raise his voice.

I do the same to you.

from Georgiasports.com, another reason we better play freshman:

Bobo: “It is too early to make that call. We know that Knowshon has some potential, and we are defiantly excited about it, but the key word is potential. He still has a long way to go. He has to learn this offense, and he has got to lean what to do in this offense………Chip and others disagree but “red shirting” as we have know it in the past is going away. Bobo’s quote indicates to me that the Red Shirt freshmen don’t spend much time learning the system so even though they’ve been on campus they’re still green. I’ll wait until March 5th for more. I have to disagree with Bulldawg on this. No coach can tolerate a player yelling at a coach. I don’t care if the coach is the assistant in charge of towel washing; Felton hired that coach to do a job and trusts him. Stukes acted like a child b/c he didn’t agree with him. As a senior, he should have known you can disagree with shouting and undermining someone’s authority. Sounds like Stukes acted like a child. You have to have some discipline or the players will think they run the show(see the Harrick era). How about requesting a meeting with Felton to talk about lifting near game days and how it effects his shooting? Don’t you think Felton would have listened to Stukes if he thought his shot would be effected? I think so and as a result this whole episode could have been avoided.

Mark, what I can;t figure out is how after 4 yrs. Stukes becomes a bad guy. Maybe you have but I haven’t heard anything negative like this since he’s been on campus. I don’t know enough about lifting and shooting to say a worde but I can wonder how this built up to the point that Stukes went blow. He (Stukes)indicated problems through out the year. I really believe that there’s more to this than we know about. Do you have any ideas?

On Moreno, I’m not sure redshirting is the issue as much as Bobo doesn’t want everyone on this blog to start beating the drum that Moreno is the next superstar. Sort of trying to avoid the SI cover jinx.. I think Bobo is protecting a talented player from overworked expectations and will allow the guy to prove himself on Saturday afternoons in the SEC..

Their season is coming to an abrupt end today. My MAIN CONCERN is hoping that their illustrious graduation rate of 8% will move into double digits. Let’s see, at 8% and 12 players, that equates to .96 players…let’s round it up to 1)!!

I’m pulling for you Coach!! You’ll hear me cheering today…“10 percent, 10 percent, 10 percent”! How about this fan favorite cheer: GOOOOO DAWGS…..and instead of SIC EM, let’s use 10 percent!!!

4:00 Buck -

I think Stukes should start - this was the first time we’ve seen a problem from him, and Coach Felton should not have allowed any discussion of the matter with the media by himself or Stukes; this case is a prime example that nothing good ever comes of that. As much as we like to think we have a right to know, WE DON’T. I love what Felton has done with the program, but he made a mistake here. Let Stukes start and see if the team responds well or not. That should determine his minutes.

Also trying to be a better fan - I have not made any women’s games this year; the schedule wouldn’t allow, but we are going to hang out in Athens for dinner after the game and then head to the Gwinnett Arena for the women’s semi on the way home. Anybody else that has to head back to Atlanta or beyond try to make it if you can. These girls have played awesome and deserve all the support we can give them.

Go Dawgs! Silence the roaming vols!

Well said Buck, Stukes has never been a trouble make. Stukes did not have to come to UGA. Stukes has worked hard to rebuild this program along with Newman and Felton. I am proud of Stukes as should all true dawg fans should be. I know Felton is a great leader also, he will do the right thing.

Bulldawg- One note, I don’t know who runs the realtimerpi.com site, but their numbers seem to be out of sync with most other major sites (ESPN, CNNSI, CBS) relating to RPI. The most reputable RPI site (according to most sources) is kenpom.com. The RPI numbers from that site are reflective of those used by the major sites. Having said that (and who really knows what numbers the NCAA comittee uses), Tech is at an RPI of 42, UGA at 55 coming into today. App State losing last night (to Cremins, of all people) helped both teams chances.

I think BuLLjoke what meant to say was the following:

Wow, Stafford was in fact our best QB. How bad was everyone else? If not for this QB, we would have lost 7 games. Also, if he’s going to be that good in the future, we all know he’ll turn pro and not play the mythical 4th year anyway, so congrats to CMR for playing him this year and gaining us a few wins. It’s just unfortunate that coach stalled his progress by misguided loyalty in playing an inferior player for multiple games. Who knows what we could have done last year?

BadgerDawg, that’s what I’ve said since Feb. of ‘06 and continued to through out the season. BTW, your school is stealing one of the top ONO Surgeons in the country to head up that Dept. at the University. His name is Tim McCullough. He was the surgeon when I flat lined on the operating table, Dec. 13th of ‘03 and brought me back. It’s a true loss for Seattle and gain for thew U of W. Not sports but thought you may be interested. Greg, I watched the game on my computer and the fans seemed to be behing the team but I wasn’t there. I just mentioned “Steamed”, Greg, what are their strengths. Nobody on the floor or bench appeared to kn what their strenghts are. That same ocean that I saw in the last game I watched was still there. You know the one between 35 ft. away and two feet under the basket. This time the announcers had it right. If you aren’t making the 3’s then you’ve got to crash the boards. We didn’t do either. When Felton went with the 1-3-1 zone with their guy out that worked but I never saw us come back to it. Did we? I saw a team that could have won that game but didn’t know what to do in critical situations. I wonder what our shooting % turned out to be? Oh well better than 8-20 by far and thiswill lay to rest any talk about “Dancing”.

Time for spring FB. I don’t know if we’ll get an invite to the NIT. We have almost a whole freshman class that has to betaught how to play. Big job for the coaches and not much time but I’m sure theyu gained a lot from that RS year now they just have to learn the system and the plays.

Buck,

Just got home from the game, 4 hour drive. Tough, tough game to watch the dogs lose today. As usual, the lack of 3 point shot accuracy was our demise. Most specifically, Stukes and Newman combined were 1-9, rest of the team 4-12. More importantly, both Stukes and Newman missed critical and multiple 3 point shots when we had them down 47-41 midway through the second half which in my opinion would have buried the Vols. But we didn’t take advantage and much to their credit their star (Lofton) hit a couple of unbelievable shots late. I really felt bad for Stukes and Newman for not coming up big on Senior day. But, I cannot get down on Coach Felton or this program because quite honestly I thought we would mail it in today with the fiasco from earlier this week coupled with the injuries and fatigue. But that didn’t happen, the guys played hard today and it really looked like there were no hangovers from the adversity this week. Stukes really played unbelievably tough, on ball defense on Lofton and shut him out for most of the game.

Our number 1 problem with respect to this team is our lack of depth down low. It really throws a monkey wrench into our attempt to not live and die by the 3 ball. Whenever Tk Brown is taken out of the lineup, we lose the only toughness (offensively and defensively) we have down low. He is all we have down low. To me, this is the single most important reason we are 17-12. I wish we had another Terrell Bell from a few years back. Maybe there’s one in next years recruiting class.

K-9 Teeth - we were hurt a lot tonight because Bliss is still injured (hip) and only played a couple of minutes. We do have a strong recruit coming in (forgot his name in the anger from the ladydogs game). Also, Rashad has shown flashes of brilliance when he stops whining about being fowled and plays aggressive. Albert, too, has potential…. we’ll see how that turns out.

I am over the guys loss, because at least they looked like they wanted to win and put out a tough effort. Levi realized partway into the 2nd half that his 3 pt shots weren’t going to start falling and had a couple of nice drives. He did seem to try to lead. Newman also played his heart out, he’s just not that coordinated when he tries to handle the ball. Tonight was the best example so far of why the fools who say we don’t miss Mercer are so wrong. How many steals would we have converted that we gave right back?

All this leads to how disgusted I am with Landers’ team. In 2 yrs, I have attended all but 1 home men’s game, and win or lose, I have never been disappointed in the effort. The Lady Dogs were an embarrassment to UGA today. There were one or two great individual efforts and other than that it was league ball defense. I am the world’s biggest UGA homer, but I cannot endorse that performance. I hope they get it together before the NCAA. I think I’ll support the NIT more.

gUYE, WE HAD WHAT WE NEEDED TO WIN TONIGHT AND YOU NAMED IT. sTUKES MADE TWO BEAUTIFUL DRIVES TO THE BASKET AND NEVER MADE ANOTHER ONE. tHAT’S WHAT i MEANT WHEN i SAID BEFORE THE GAME THAT IF THE 3S WEREN;T FALLING THEN EVERYBODY SHOULD BE CRASHING THE BOARDS. aS FOR THE lADY dAWGS, I STOPPED WATCHING A LONG TIME AGO. NewnanDawg,

I agree we miss and have missed Bliss a lot lately. I like his wrecking ball play, it tends to give the team some toughness and attitude. For the 2 minutes he was in there yesterday I know of at least one collision and 3 bodies on the floor, that kind of play keeps the other team honest. As far as Rashaad’s potential play, you are more optimistic than I. While he was in the game yesterday, we got absolutely murdered on the boards. You’d think even if he wasn’t going to block out (though he wasn’t the only one)he’d still dominate the boards with his size. And to let the Crews dude dunk on him and tell him about it (though he did receive a technical), I like to see a fire that doesn’t let that happen, but I haven’t as of yet. Even his passes on inbounds were slow and sloppy. To me it just looks like a lack of fire and from my years playing and watching, you can’t teach that. But this is all my opinion and I hope Rashaad proves me wrong in the future. As far as Albert Jackson, I haven’t seen enough of him and I think he has been plagued by some injuries as well. And yeah, you’re right, losing Mercer was monumental for this team, if nothing else just from a depth and energy standpoint.

But, I’m proud of this team. They never quit. If and when our talent equals our effort, we’ll have one of those 24-6 years. I just hope it is soon.

Well put K-9. I agree with you on Bliss; I think that he, Yata, and Takais will make a great senior class next year that will lead the team. I know I am overly optimistic about everything with this team, because I do love the effort.

Chip, my Reptile Relative was just calling cross country to talked about it. I made sure it was a short conversation. Chip, I don’t claim to be an epert but I watched the game on ESPN on my compuiter and I still have the same question. Why couldn’t the Dawgs attack that vast area between 30’ away and 2’ from the basket. Stukes was missing his 3s but then he made two beautiful drive and scored. He started about the foul line. I started yelling to the 4 walls do it again, everybody rush the basket, over power their “D”, have everybady crashing except maybe one. Even with their guy not hitting we almost won the game and when he did hit a couple, call time out or do anything to break that rythem he hit. We just seem to let them play their way and we could have won that game. You were there what am I misssing. I’m all ears.

Buck, I shared your observations during Saturday’s game. Georgia simply is not very good at getting the ball inside. Tennessee was severely overmatched from a size standpoint in the post. Much of the time, 6-foot-4 Dane Bradshaw was defending 6-foot-8 Takais Brown or 7-footer Rashaad Singleton. But either the Dogs had trouble getting the ball to them (in the case of Brown) or they would attempt a shot (Singleton). Also, outside of Sundiata Gaines (and the injured Mike Mercer, of course) they’re not real good at dribble penetration. Methinks they’re not real good at a lot of things.
