UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Blue chips or upset special?

We interrupt this football recruiting madness to bring you an important reminder: Georgia has a basketball game Wednesday night — and it’s a big basketball game.

In case you missed it, the Bulldogs are playing host to No. 1-ranked Florida at 7:30 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum. Georgia will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Not a great team to be looking to get better against.

That said, I don’t think it’s impossible. Though the Gators have been awesome all season, they haven’t been flawless. And Georgia has been tough at home (4-0 in league play). Depending on what kind of crowd shows up — the last two home games have been sellouts, so I don’t know why this game wouldn’t be — the Stegosaurus can be a tough place to play. Don’t forget, the Dogs played pretty good until very late down in Gainesville.

In fact, Georgia led at halftime and trailed by five with a chance to cut it to three late in the second half when Levi Stukes took off with a steal on a fast-break and went up for a lay-up. Trouble was the Gators’ Corey Brewer hustled up from behind Stukes and pinned his lay-up attempt against the backboard. Florida took the ball the other way, Chris Richards scored and, just like that, the Gators were up by seven and closed out the game from the foul line en route to a 67-51 win.

For what it’s worth, Georgia has never beaten a No. 1 team. It did come close one time. On Dec. 28, 1997, the Bulldogs actually led No. 1 North Carolina by three inside the final minute. But the blew three free throws, the Tar Heels tied the game in regulation and won in overtime, 82-80.

Do you believe Georgia can knock off the Gators? Crazier things have happened in sports.

Oddly enough, this game will NOT be televised, which says a lot about the sorry television deal the SEC has. But that’s another story.

So what’s bigger, national signing day or Georgia playing the No. 1 basketball team in the country?

How about this: What would you hope to see more, the Dogs beat No. 1 Florida in basketball or Allen Bailey to pull an 11th-hour flop and decide to sign a scholarship with Georgia?

Although I love UGA basketball, I think it is evident that UGA is a football school and as a dawg, I am glad that UGA got 14 additional offensive and defensive linemen position players. This was a class selected to fill specific needs, and we were thin on both sides of the line last year and now are even more so with graduation. Games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage, and we will be a much stronger and better team in the next few years with this class. A QB can’t through and a RB cannot run without someone blocking for them. A team cannot win in the SEC if it cannot stop the run first. So we got what we needed and hopefully we can flip a few recruits from other schools with the remaining scholorships.

Here are the Rivals Tope 10 recruiting classes as of this moment:

1 Florida

2 Tennesse

3 Texas

4 Southern Cal

5 LSU

6 Notre Dame

7 South Carolina

8 Georgia

9 Auburn

10 Nebraska

Georgia Tech is number 18.

No wonder the SEC East keeps getting tougher. Look at the top 8 teams. Tomorrow is the day.

I don’t think any reasonable Dawg fan would prefer a promising but unproven recruit over upsetting the top-ranked Gators, but I’ve been wrong about such things before. A win tomorrow night would be truly monumental for our program, and I think there’s a chance we just might do it … .

Chip,

You know me, I love all of my Dawg teams, but I’ll take this win over Florida tomorrow. What EVERYONE is missing right now is that we have an awesome draft class as it is. We are No. 1 in the Nation for O-line recruits. That’s our greatest need. We’re also top-3 for D-line. Our second greatest need. It’s better to recruit for need than do what the Gaturds are doing, and selling a bunch of idiot kids a bill of goods just so they can ride the bench for 4 years.

Beating Florida would mean more. We need that win to not go to .500 in league play. We need that win to give us a signature win (more than the Kentucky game) to impress the guys who choose the field of 65. We need to the win to make up for the Vandy Game, which we should have won had we just pounded the ball into Brown over and over again.

And Chip, I do have one question, which is out of place here, but I can’t comment on it on the blog I wanted to, so here it goes. Basically, why shut down a whole blog because a bunch of redneck, racist people want to get on and spout their particular brand of ignorance? I’m talking about the Falcons Blog, which seems to always devolve into a race war. Why should those of us who aren’t inbred fools suffer because the ones that are seem to want to show the world their ignorance? Shouldn’t the site just erase their blogs and ban their IP Addresses? Or ban their names or shut down their accounts? It isn’t a right, to be on this site. It isn’t a first ammendment issue. So what’s the deal there? I’m glad we don’t have those issues on this blog, though I do remember some idiots a few years ago when it was Shock and Greene, and then Shock by himself. But they were few and far between. Maybe the site needs to go back to a pay site, which the trash who speak like that would no be able to afford. Anyway, I just wanted to get that off of my chest.

GO DAWGS!

Would it be alright if we had our cake and ate it too. I want a solid recruting class and win against the Gay-tors tomorrow. I believe we have a very, very solid class already, that is very underrated when compared to some other teams. We’re getting the interior guys that we need. We already have some top notch guys on the team at our skill positions are bigget need is the line. And very few linemen get the rankings that the skill players too. Plus when you are getting guys like Caled King, Israel Troup, etc, I think things are going awesome. As for basketball, I really want to see us pull this win off. Our program is rising and could get to a place where it has never been before. Beating the number one team in country would do our team wonders. I think we’ve got a great shot.

To go along with what Matthew said, the Gaturds and the Volunqueers are notorious for telling recruits what they want to hear. I remember back when we were recruiting Chad Jackson, my cousin who went to high school in Hoover with him told me that he really liked Georgia, then I saw him a few months later on a recruiting show talking about how Zook had told him he would have a great chance to play early at Florida and Jackson said that we had a bunch of receivers that had been redshirted the year before who were going to play that next year. And we know the end result. Just goes to show you how underhanded those guys can be. But I’m proud of the way Coach Richt has been honest and upfront with guys and even if that means losing out on a guy who’s lied to by somebody else that okay with me. I’d rather win the honest way. But that’s just me.

Beating UF at any sport is always the #1 priority. I’ll take that over anything else, ever.

Bailey looks like a beast and would be a big haul. But he isn’t going to get a shot at LB at UGA - which is apparantly what he really wants to play. UGA is clearly going after faster, even if smaller, LB’s this year. So I’m not all that worried about where Bailey goes.

But beating a win over UF would be imminently satisfying right now. So, give me the choice and I’ll take that!

I’m not buying in on our beating the Reptiles tomorrow night. The Tenn. game showed me to much negative stuff and that was followed by the Vandy game’s antics. If the Dawgs were “Dancers” they wouldn’t lose games like those two. So I’ll follow the game on the ajc.com game tracker but I’m not holding my breath and turning blue. Bad for your health. Recruiting? We got a good class for ‘07 recruiting year but if anybody think’s that we did not take an image hit, IMO, they are dead wrong. I know I’ll hear all kinds of rebuttals but it’s true. My question about our recruiting is: why did the Dawgs not have one new commit after the 1st. part of Dec. I’m not at all concerned about JR’s making a commit because that’s way to far out and we already have one whose getting wobbley I’m talking about H.S. SR’s who walked away from Ga. I’ll tell you now, we needed those “OL” we’re picking up but if our receivers don’t catch the ball we’ll be in a world of hurt for the ‘07 season.

Hey, bankerdawg. Your halo must be getting heavy. It is absolutely mind boggling that we are the only school who is completely honest and above board in what we tell recruits. We don’t have to apologize for the quality of our football recruits. And we don’t have to denigrate other schools because somebody beats us out for a player or two. I’m sure all recruiters take some liberties with the facts in some situations. If we didn’t, we probably would be competing with Vandy or MS State or Ole Miss for the anchor position in the SEC.

Now here’s a research project for someone(Chip Towers are you listening) that I think would be very interesting. Go through every school in the SEC and find out who is playing the biggest % of true freshmem. What was our %? I don’t remember the exact number of recruits that we had come on campus. I’ll take the upset over the Gators tonight. I can’t believe that this game is not on live tv. The SEC has a bad tv deal, when the #1 team is playing a conference game, it should be a live game! I did notice that SportSouth will show the game on tape delay at 10pm, but then I’ll already know the result. Good luck Dawgs!!! cuz, IMO, that’s outstanding! but there’s the flip side of the coin. All of these “RS” will still be coming in cold and they’ll still have to leard how to play at the much higher level than on the scout team. I think we can all see the sweeping change across the country where teams are playing more and more True Freshmen and the use of the “RS” tag has dropped. You understand but for others I’m not at all saying play every Freshman, just that there’s been a fundamental change in the whole “Shirt” process. Look around the SEC and this patteren clearly is emerging. Teams are putting their money where their mouth is. They aren’t making things up. So with this class I’m hoping that maybe a few more will play and not “Shirt”. King and Troupe along with white, who can catch and meybe even working Logan Gray in. Don’t know but I hope so.

82 Dawg- I LOVE IT!! I’m sure some people will still try and deny the importance of bringing in top classes. I hope that since we “filled our needs” this year that we bounce back next year with an outstanding class! That article should prove that you can never have to many elite athletes on a team. The argument of “we don’t need so and so because that position is not a need” should begin to thin out. Missing as many top tier athletes (in state no less) as we did is a HUGE dissapointment this year.

What are JUCO players?

By gator the dog catcher

February 7, 2007 02:15 PM | Link to this

Gen Neyland - congrats on Ahmad Paige. Huge pick-up at WR.

War Eagle - the main difference between Scout and Rivals is how each count JUCO players and re-signs from Prep Schools. Scout does not weigh JUCOs the same as incoming freshman because 4 years is more than 2 years of eligibility. Re-signs on Scout do not count the same either as they were computed into the rankings the previous year. Rivals just counts stars period.

Scout has more 5 stars than Rivals, but Rivals has more 4 stars than Scout. So that basically just evens out.

Now………….here comes that Billy Ball “that will never work!”

I’ve taken the time to read all the posts I could fine this morning and with all the back and forth That darn word still pops into my mind. Preception: yes we signed a good class but the SEC East has changed. The preception that Ga. would get the best in state is gone. Tech, the Vols, SOS and Urban blew that thought apart. Are we in s cycle where every 4 yrs. we take a yr. off to fill needs? From the mouths of babies, isn’t that H.S. Jr. commit now wobbley and didn’t he say that Ga. doesn’t put Wr’s in the NFL AND OTHER SCHOOLS DO? We need two things to happen to have a banner ‘07 season. MR has to take a hardline as a HC. and our WR, no receivers period must catch the ball. If Troupe and King make it to campus and they can catch I hope we don’t put a “SHIRT” on them. Remember we do have 18 “Shirts” coming aboard but don’t forget they’re still wet behind the ears. We better hope that CS can whip that “OL” in shape in a hurry because we have no time to waste……the Preception of this class with evey other negative that’s happened is going to hard to over come. We better win.

Gen Neyland, My comments were not to come across as some holier than thou. I’m proud of our coaching staff and the way they have maintained a upstanding program. I’m sorry to call out only Fulmer, but over the years you must admit he has been apart of some questionable circumstances at best. I know you are smart enough to realize that he has done some things that are not in accordance with NCAA requirements. You know he payed Jason Allen to come and play for him. You know he payed Tee Martin to come and help him win a National Championship. You know he knew all about the “tutors” that were writing papers for the players. And I’m sure he’s been part of countless more things. The worst thing is that the SEC knows it and won’t do anything about it.

Born Football - Scout will count the Prep School kids only for the first year that they sign. JUCO’s are weighted as half the points value because they have less eligibility.

For example: Caleb King is counted this year by Scout and Rivals to UGAY’s ranking. After he goes to Hargrave and recommits next year to UGAY, Scout will list him next year, but will not count him towards the rankings. Rivals will count him again next year.
