UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs recall UT’s postgame antics

Sometimes I think Georgia basketball coach Dennis Felton relishes controversy. Take Wednesday night’s game at Tennessee.

You may recall that, after the Vols beat Georgia 83-78 last February in Athens, Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl and his players ran up into the stands at Stegeman Coliseum to high-five and shake hands with the large contingent of Big Orange fans, whom Pearl had implored to make the road trip down to Athens.

Well, Felton didn’t like that move then, and he still doesn’t like it now. He said as much when the subject came up again this week.

“The way I remember it is Coach Pearl instructed [his players] to go up into the stands and I felt that that was inappropriate to do that on the road in somebody else’s gym,” Felton said on Monday. “I also think it makes your players very vulnerable to a combustible situation. You’re up in the stands with 9,000 to 10,000 other folks who are disappointed and you’re celebrating right there amongst them.

“Fortunately, we didn’t have any fans that did anything that could have turned into something dangerous or made for a dangerous environment.”

For his part, the ever-rambunctious Pearl said he was sorry about the incident.

“It’s something I regret and I apologized for,” said Pearl, who was reprimanded by the SEC for his actions. “I’m sure Georgia, amongst many things, can use that as motivation.”

Pearl is obviously out of the Dale Brown mold of coaching in that he’s big on self promotion and generating excitement. I’m sure everybody saw a week ago when he attended a Lady Vols’ game, shirtless, with his chest and face painted.

I asked Felton if he’d ever do something like that. Not only did he say he wouldn’t, he added, “I don’t know another coach in the country who would.”

So did you have a problem with the Vols running in the stands last year? Do you like Pearl’s coaching style and occasional antics? Do you wish Felton was a little more animated or is he just fine the way he is?

Meanwhile, the Nashville Tennessean is reporting that the Vols’ leading scorer Chris Lofton will NOT play against the Dogs tomorrow night. Pearl said earlier it would be a game-time decision.

Georgia’s Sundiata Gaines, for one, hopes Lofton plays.

“It’ll be a better win if he’s on the court,” he said.

Now that’s confidence.

We have come far enough that we should expect to win road, home or neutral against anyone. We are good enough, experienced enough and tough enough to get it done and there are no excuses for this bunch of DAWGS!! As far as them going in the stands last year, if we would have beaten them there would be no reason for them to celebrate!!!

Bruce Pearl is and always has been a shameless self promoter and doesn’t care whose feathers he ruffles. In my opinion, he took away from the women’s game and forced the focus on himself and his program.

If Dennis Felton is being himself, then he is just fine the way he is. For those that don’t think he is animated, just watch him during the game. If everyone played defense like he does, we’d be tough.

Yet another reason to pull against any team ORANGE…How about Pearl showing some class?? Wait this is Tennessee..How about Pearl dressing like Smokey for the Football game next year..or maybe Daniel Boone..or whatever that coon hat wearing guy is on the sideline with a muzzle loader…Now that is class

Dennis Felton does not need to pull any of these stunts to motivate.

January 30, 2007 04:23 PM | Link to this

The only thing I agree with Felton on is the fact that there could have been an altercation in the stands at someone else’s gym. Pearl could have shown his appreciation another way. BUT, to let fans know that they are appreciated is not a problem with me. He asked them to come down to the game that night. They did. He wanted to reward them. They were.
IMHO, there is only one way to keep that from happening…Just win, baby!

Pearl? Isn’t he a one-shot wonder? He was big news last year and then faded fast.

Isn’t he most famous for sweating?

I guess UGA students should just go to the UGA-UT game with their chests painted with slogans referencing Pearl.

Why not have a contest for best slogan?

I laugh when the uga hypocrites talk about class when we all know how they cheat in academics (how many points is a three-point shot worth) and sell their sec championship rings on ebay. Or the fans that are so classy that the university had to make a committee to deal with rowdy fans on football gamedays.

Pearl got thrown out of his son’s HS game. The other was on a recruiting visit to a HS game he yelled “Let them play!” at an official and a school administrator asked him to “tone it down”. He is very flamboyant and for the most part, these hillbillies love it.

sundiata should be careful what he wishes for. the ncaa is not going to look back at this game and judge whether or not lofton was playing in this game. the dawgs need all the wins they can get and the vols without lofton are not as formidable. the dawgs need to win this game as it will prove they can win on the road. unlike some overrated team right down the road.

bruce pearl has shown he can coach and motivate. but his antics seem to show he has an ego problem. he can’t seem to get enough of himself. felton might have been right about no other coach taking off their shirt. i’ll take it one step further and say that besides florida fans, most respectable 40 year olds wouldn’t paint their chests going to a game.

Mickey Dearstone, the announcer for Lady Vols basketball, stated this morning on his morning talk show in knoxville that he “didnt like Coach Felton because he made the Lady Vols wait until 8:00 at night to practice at last years game”. He went on to say that CDF blamed it on the fact the he wasnt sure when his team was going to practice and had to block out a larger time frame. Hey Mickey….you and your vul hillbilly women basketball loving cronies can blow it our your narrow rear end. I can’t stand Pearl but he fits right in a UT. Off the big 3 programs at UT women’s basketball rules lead by Pat Summit is the only one that’s seems to operate within the rules. Perl & Phulmer make a perfect pair both of them rated out other programs to cover there own violations up. There’s already been off the court issues with some of his players that lead to suspensions or dismissal. When UGA hired Harrick then we stared winning I was hesitant to get too excited because I figured the longer he was there we’d eventually find out he was doing something underhanded. Sure enough about the time I started to fall into the hype the bubble burst then as the story unfolded we found out he tried to sacrifice his own son to make it look like he was innocent. (Adams hired him & should have been fired then too but that’s a whole other blog in it’s self.) Sooner or later the same thing will happen with Pearl at UT but wait he’ll just rat out another program in a deal with the NCAA to keep his wrong doing covered up!

The only good thing that came out of the Harrik fiasco was the hiring of Felton whose dose things the right way & now we’re beginning to see it pay off. Eventually he could lead turn UGA into a basketball powerhouse of course it would help it Damon Evans would get a new Arena built yet again that’s whole other blog lol. The bottom line is Richt & Felton have class, do things above board & the right way where as Phulmer & Pearl do not sonner or later the former will reap there just rewards & the later will reap there due punishment. You can already see that happening in small to degrees to each so just give it time then we’ll see there full & just demise.

It’s funny to hear Georgia fans talk about class considering that they have none. You guys are just so jealous of Pearl and Summitt. The truth is you wish that you had those two coaches. Summitt has owned your team for as long as she has been here. Pearl has more coaching ability in his little finger than your coach has in his whole body. I guess it did hurt getting owned on your home floor last year. By the way, how did you guys do in the NCAA’s? Coach Fulmer, all I can say is 51-33 owned at home! Now, about Mickey Dearstone. I can see exactly why you are so jealous of him. It’s hard to deal with one person having a higher IQ score than the total combined score of your entire student body. Georgia fans, see Dictionary to find out what an IQ test is. What am I saying, you guys can’t read. Fear the wrath of Nemo and Marley! Meow!

  1. Name the coach who once said “I don’t care what they say about me, as long as they are talking about me.”

  2. Coach Pearl took a program that really had been in the doldrums with little real fan support or excitement, and has resurrected the program back to the level of excitement in the mid 70’s.

  3. Coach Pearl helped to excite the fan base with his stunt to support fellow UT Coach Pat Summitt - she was amused by it, but face it - she doesn’t really need that much help considering her program’s stature.

  4. Last but not least, die UGA scum! GO BIG ORANGE!!

Lynn, I guess you should know what its like to be “owned at home”, especially since UT hasn’t beaten Georgia in that God awful town called Knoxville since 1999. Georgia is 5-2 against UT since 2001 so slow down on the football talk. The last two times we went to Knoxville the combined score is UGA 68 - UT 28. Now for your other points, please someone explain to me why on earth Georgia fans would be jealous of UT fans for having a coach(Pearl) who acts like an a*.I guess taking your shirt off, painting your torso Orange and going out in public constitutes class in East Tennessee.Getting thrown out of a high school basketball game, regardless of who is playing,is classy. As a matter of fact you must have the only coach in the country with class, since no one else is fool enough to do such things.Pearl is a self serving, ego-maniac, who must always have the spotlight on him. He can claim he showed up at the womens game to show support for Coach Summit. Have I missed something here? Does Coach Summit need anyone to drum up support for the Women’s basketball program? No, UT is widely recognized as the premiere women’s program in college basketball, they don’t need a grown, fat man prancing around half-naked ,painted orange to promote their program. Bruce Pearl was promoting Bruce Pearl, nothing more .

I definitely don’t condone Pearl’s actions at the HS game or going into the stands in Athens but I do admire him for the job he has done resurrecting the UT men’s program. I also applaud the UT fans for coming out of the woodwork last year (and this year) in support of their team.

What is wrong with all of you. Why does it matter that a coach shows as much enthusiasm for his program and others within his university’s program as Pearl does? I think it is awesome what Pearl does. If you can have a NFL coach wear cutoff hoodies to games, then Pearl can certainly wear orange body paint to support the best women’s coach in history. And I applaud him for sending his kids into the stands for showing their support on the road. Get off of your couch and get a life.

UGA fans respect Coach Summitt. Of course she is a better coach than Fulmer and Pearl put together. Vol fans should be very glad that no one hired Cutcliffe as a head coach or the football team would be back in the toilet. Maybe the Vols can work on winning a bowl game so as not to continuously embarrass the rest of the SEC. Of course it makes sense that UT’s women’s basketball team does so well — orange is not a color for men (unless it’s on a vest in hunting season). Someone buy Coach Pearl some antiperspirant and move on. His team isn’t exactly on fire and, except for sweating or acting like a teenager, he is yesterday’s news.

By AltamahaDawg

January 31, 2007 10:45 AM | Link to this

So Vol fans, if that stunt (sending his players in tot stands of an opposing teams) was perfectly acceptable, then i guess the SEC is full of it for repromanding him. And what does it say about your coach if he totally compromised his principals and apologized for something that was ok?

Either agree with the topic, that he just got carried away, lets us vent and joke about it, (or better yet, stay the hell off of our blog), or call the man a coward for backing down.

AS for our irrelevant BB Coach and team which no one cares about, it must be a sad state when an irrelevant team and coach is tied for 2nd in the league and your esteemed and relevant team is tied for dead last in the same said league.Ut is 2 1/2 games behind UGA and you have only played 6 conference games. You’re absolutely right Wizard! Thanks to ESPN, the world is all too familiar with the hillbillies from Tennessee.

Even before the hilarious courtside follies, the network aired the now famous ‘SportCenter’ commercial featuring a family of Vol fans, complete with overweight, shoeless, missing teeth, pig-in-hand ‘billies dressed in rags getting on an elevator.

The network later apologized, but like Pearl’s embarrassing moment in the orange sun the damage was already done.

And miss Lynn, when you plan to enter a UGA blog and bash Georgia fans, you’d better come with more than that. A seasoned blogger would never have brought up the current trend in football.

When I dig way back into the archives, I find where UT had a 7-loss season some time ago. Heck, it seems like it was just last year, in fact. Wait! That is a fact!

Your assignment is to find out when was the last time UGA football lost 7 games in a season. Please take your time, you’re going to need it. Then report back and we’ll talk about current trends.

Heywood went to play in the Big Ten (Eleven?) because he knew he would be a stand out in a league where defense is nonexistent. In the SEC he’d just be another player vying for playing time…

squirrel, the checkerboard phenomena is mesmerizing to these hunters and highway workers up here. They just stare at it for hours repeating, “Man, that thar is the coolestist thang I’ve everd seed.” Besides, it clearly defines the endzone for both players AND fans and “heps ‘em kape up with what’s happen’in with the Vols…”

Heyward wanted to play near his grandma?. Can’t trump that. Although Brad Johnson probably has a grandma suite in his new house that she could’ve used. Heck, Hines Ward could’ve driven from Pittsburg to Athens he knows the way. “Driving Miss Heyward”.

WE didn’t need a lot of big names this year anyway. We are stacked at most positions. When we need these guys they will be there. Look at UT always a top 5 for the past decade. That’ll get you beat by PSU in a bowl game and a box of donuts (Phil’s real motivating factor).

I guess you dumb-a#% dawg fans will always be second class in the SEC in every sport. Come back & talk smack when you finally beat us in something. Bruce Pearl may be a showman, but he has never had a losing season in his ENTIRE career. Just look at where this program was before him and where it is now. Even you back woods redneck dawg fans can see that that’s impressive.

More shirtless Bruce Pearl! More DF crying about us winning on his court! More beating GA without our leading scorer!

GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We couldn’t make a shot. Vols shoot better than in their dreams. Game over.

On the good news front: Dawgs still in 3rd place; Vols still in 5th place; Vols still have to wear neon orange.
