UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

A salute to Kevin Brophy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Running a little late, so I apologize for the brevity of today’s blog. Just got back from Stegeman Coliseum and interviewing coaches and players about Sunday’s game against LSU.
As you all probably know, there is going to be a tribute BEFORE the game to the late Kevin Brophy, the Australian player who was killed in a car accident in Greensboro last summer. Coach Dennis Felton asked me to ask our readers to please get to the game early as the ceremony will begin several minutes before the scheduled 3:05 p.m. tipoff. He suggests being there by 2:45.
Brophy’s entire family, his parents, two brothers and sister, plus his UGA girlfriend, Molly Romage, and her family, will be in attendance. His family flew all the way from Melbourne just this week. They were actually in attendance at the Kentucky game. Anybody wondering what got into Dave Bliss that night needs only to know that he and Broph were roommates and best friends and Bliss was “inspired” as the Bulldogs mounted a comeback.
Felton said he’s been “an emotional wreck” with the Brophys in town and the memories of gregarious Aussie pouring over him and the team. They all say it’s going to be a very emotional.
Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things, but how do you think the tribue might affect the Bulldogs’ play?
I spoke with Eamonn Brophy, Kevin’s father, and am writing a story for Sunday’s paper. He said the outpouring his family has received from the Georgia people has been unbelievable. He called the trip to Athens this week “a pilgrimage” for his whole family to see the place Kevin loved so much.
On that note, if you feel like it, feel free to write a personal note to Brophys here on the blog and I’ll see that the family gets them before they leave town.
As always, thanks for tuning in.

I would like to express my sympathies to the Brophy family on their loss, but also take time to celebrate Kevin’s life. We often point out the things that are wrong with college athletics, but too infrequently do we recognize the young men like Kevin who give of their time and efforts out of their love for the game and their university. Kevin’s enthusiasm, determination and pure joy of the game are greatly missed.

I would like to echo Allen’s comments. I live in the Savannah area, and followed Kevin’s career there as well. What a fine young man he was. What he was doing the weekend of his accident was nothing unusual for him. He was always finding a way to give of himself to his teammates as well as to the rest of us. He is missed.

My condolences to the Brophy family. May your family and the Georgia Bulldog family cherish and celebrate the memories of his life. We at UGA are proud kevin, in spirit, will always be a Georgia Bulldog. And to the Brophy family, you are all proudly accepted members of the Georgia family. I have visited your beautiful country of Australia and when I go back I will wear a UGA shirt and would be proud to meet and shake all of your hands and hear stories about Kevin. God Bless and happy memories.

My heart goes out to the Brophy and Romage families. Thank you for making the trip, and I hope this will help you to heal a little bit and to realize what an impact Kevin made on the UGA community. No doubt Kevin’s presence was at the Kentucky game, as I have never seen the Bulldogs play with such character during the improbable second half comeback. When I read afterwards that your family was at the game, I got sudden goosebumps knowing the Bulldogs really “did it for Broph”. I will be at the LSU game on Sunday and look forward to paying tribute to your son, brother and friend. Kevin’s spirit has touched not only his teammates and coaches but all of us fans and the UGA community. Thank you for giving us such a great gift! God Bless.

These three things remain, faith, hope and love. Kevin loved UGA and UGA loves him and his family. God bless the Brophys for making the pilgrimage for themselves and their son. And God bless the Romage family who lost one they called their own.

I too, live in Savannah and I followed Kevin throughout his days at Memorial. He was a man among boys then, and now he is an angel among the entire Bulldog Nation. God bless the Brophy and Romage families, you are in our hearts and prayers.
It is not often that a D-1 player comes out of this area of the state in any sport, but Savannah is proud to have sent UGA a DAMN GOOD DAWG thanks to you. Godspeed Kevin, we’ll miss ya!

What an honor it was for my entire family to have shared Kevin’s life while he was with us and the Bulldog Nation! We are much better people for it. A young man full of life which he gave to all he encountered without reservation. What a testament to how he was raised by his parents. We still miss Kevin but the wonderful memories will last a lifetime.
Dawgs, continue to “Do It For Broph”. You have started well, finish well! Kevin is certainly smiling as he watches.

i transfered to uga in the fall of 2003 to run track for the dawgs. Broph was one of the first people i met when i got into town and i was immediatly blown away by how outgoing and happy he was. he was one of the nicest guys i encountered in my three great years in Athens and although we lost touch after i graduated last year, i was absolutly torn apart with grief from the loss of such a great person. He treated others the way i wish i had the confidence to do. to his family, i just want you to know that he brought so much happiness to so many people and you should be so proud to call him a member of your family. I will never forget him. please soak in all the love for kevin that will be shown tomorrow afternoon and know that it is just a fraction of the love he gave to everyone he encountered at UGA.

I’ve read this blog a few times and each trip has been filled with tears and floods of emotion. I can only imagine the waves of emotion that will be in the old coliseum today. God bless the Brophy family, their friends and all of those who have had the experience of losing a child. I don’t necessarily care a great deal whether Georgia wins or loses today and that is really saying something for a lifelong DAWG such as me. I want each and every person to try and be a little more like Broph and treat people with kindness and love. I am sure that those close to Kevin will never forget him and those of us that just knew him as a Georgia basketball player will not either.
I hope that we not only can do it for Broph on the court, but off the court as well.
GO DAWGS!!!

Here is a comment for the Brophy family:
My deepest condolences to the Brophy family. Kevin was more than a role model for the team, he was the inspirational backbone, a testament to the power of human will and the ability to exceed expectations. I hope that the Dawgs of 2007 can do justice to his memory, although I’m quite sure that any achievement they reach on the court pales in comparison to the loss they will hold over their heads this season. The players, coaches, students, and fans all knew what Kevin meant to the team, and now it’s time for them to step up and do what we all knew Kevin would want them to do. I truly hope to see something special this season, and many other, in regards to the memory of Kevin. “Do it for Broph” will not be tethered to this season alone, but for future generations of bulldog players.

Our thoughts and prayers are you with you.. Brophys. I didn’t know your son, but we as bulldawg nation heard so much good things about Kevin. He seemed like a very determined young man. I’m telling his story to my son of how hard he worked to get to where he was at. He came a long way and made it. I think Kevin will be a good influence for my son and any other young kids.
My family lives in Lakeside @Pakenham, Melbourne. They’re rugby league fans and Georgia as well.
God Bless!
