UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Hellooooooo, Newman!

Today’s blog is dedicated to Buck. May you feel better soon, sir …

OK, to all those of you who were unable to see Georgia’s game last night against Arkansas — and from the number of people I understand do NOT get ESPNU that’s an awful lot of folks — you missed an absolute classic.

It was exactly what the Bulldogs needed. Down seven points with 2:21 to play, Georgia came roaring back and Steve Newman nailed a 26-foot, 3-point shot (I counted it off myself on the court after the game) to give Georgia a thrilling 67-64 win over Arkansas.

It was one of the best Georgia games I’ve covered in a long time, even better than last year’s similar buzzer-beating win on a shot by Levi Stukes at South Carolina.

Here’s another cool thing about it that didn’t get in any of my stories. Newman’s mom made the 1,100-mile drive up from Florida to watch the game. Of course, the big redhead Orlando is a senior this season and his mother is trying to make it to all his games this year.

Game-winning shot or not, you Georgia fans and alumni should really embrace a player like Newman. He joined the Bulldogs at a time it was difficult to get anybody to play for them, has worked hard on the court and in the classroom and has labored through three difficult seasons before getting to this point.

And I’m telling you, Newman and these Dogs are excited about their prospects this year and really playing hard. They might not win them all but they’re definitely a bunch of fighters.

They’ll be in for another bruiser this weekend when they take on No. 10 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. But if they can somehow pull out another win over in Coleman Coliseum — and it could happen, the Tide just lost at Vandy — you’re going to see Stegeman Coliseum come to life again when Kentucky and LSU come to town next week.

So who saw the game? Who listened to it on the radio? Newman made the game-winner but was their another player who may have deserved MVP honors (perhaps Sundiata Gaines or Mike Mercer)? Can they beat Alabama? What are the odds of winning the next four: at Bama, UK, LSU, at Tennessee?

Meanwhile, as for my coverage of the actual game last night, I’d like to apologize to those of you who did not get a game story in your printed edition of the newspaper. As you probably know, the game did not tip off until 9:08 p.m. eastern time and did not get over until well after 11.

Normally that would not be a problem for the majority of the readers in our metro Atlanta circulation. However, we had early deadlines last night because of the icy weather moving into the area. So my stories on the game — I filed one right after the final buzzer, then re-wrote an entirely new story immediately after that — did not get into but the very final editions of our paper.

Of course, what we call the write-thru version has appeared online since I first filed it right around midnight last night.

The last time I saw a game live was my Senior year during the Harrick Years. I hope that the students and UGA fans will embrace this team as much as we did when Jarvis and Jonas Hayes were playing.

I try to listen and watch every game I can since moving to Charlotte, but the games that are on TV are few and far between. I am really excited about what Felton is doing w/ this team and developing our younger players.

Just think what we would have had if Louis Williams would have made the right decision and decided to play for us a couple of years. Oh well.

GO DAWGS and here’s to dancing in March!!

Chip, I managed to see the whole game last night. I have ESPNU, but I didn’t even know the game was on there until I stumbled upon it on my Digital Cable guide. Anyway, the game reminded me of the game against Wisconsin. The only difference is that the Dawgs were able to make some stops at the end and Steve Newman was simultaneously possessed by Larry Bird, Adam Morrison and Sam Cassell. Don’t forget Sundiata Gaines’s big threes to keep the game from getting out of hand earlier in the half, either. I have to say that when Newman put up that shot over Hill, I could see from the trajectory that it was going in. As soon as it hit the net, I fell off the couch and started laughing. Ahhhhh…good times. Great win for the Dawgs. If they play with that kind of heart the rest of the season, there’ll be an NCAA tournament bid for them.

I’d give Gaines and Newman co-MVPs. As for the next four games, if the Dawgs can split, they’d be in great shape. I realistically can’t see them doing more than that.

You know, unless Newman is possessed again.

Some of you basketball fans may know about this kid Avery Jukes from Duluth who went to Alabama. He’s decided to transfer to Butler. Here’s the release I just received: Avery Jukes Transfers from Alabama Basketball Team January 18, 2007

TUSCALOOSA – Avery Jukes, a 6-foot-8 freshman forward from Duluth, Ga., has transferred from the University of Alabama’s basketball team. Jukes played in three games for a total of seven minutes this season.

“Avery is a great student. He did a very good job academically here,” said Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried. “He chose to transfer to Butler University. I think his playing time and opportunity for playing time in the future is much greater for him there, and that was the deciding factor. Avery is a very nice young man and we wish him the best.”

Jukes played for four minutes in Alabama’s season opener against Jackson State and had one rebound, a block and a turnover. He played one minute against Texas Southern on November 25 and had a rebound, and he played for two minutes in the December 9 game against Alabama State and had one rebound and one turnover.

I saw the game and Gaines’ ankle seems to be coming back. He shot over the 7 footer at the top of the key to tie the game with 32 seconds left. That was exciting. He is a tough player himself considering his recent ankle injury. We need to get behind this team, I love their attitude. Georgia on our mind!

And one more thing, with regard to the debate between quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Eric Zeier and who was the better freshman and who will be the better college player, here’s a couple of e-mail responses I received, the first from UGA sports communication director Claude Felton:

Chip: Interesting reading your blog on Zeier and Stafford…

“Zeier put up unbelievable career numbers. He played in 44 games, starting 39. He was 838 of 1,402 for 11,153 yards (then an SEC career record), 67touchdowns and 37 picks. But Zeier*s overall record as a starter was 26-14-1 and his SEC record was 14-14-1 and, more importantly, he was 0-7 against Tennessee and Florida.

Stafford is 0-1 against the big two (he didn*t start against the Vols, lest we forget).”

I think that will be a good debate over the next couple of years.

A couple of comments—why is Florida and Tennessee the “big two”? I thought we had the big four—Florida, Tennessee, Tech, Auburn. Throw those in and Stafford was 2-1 as a freshman which I think would be the same as Zeier in ‘91, his freshman year. It’ll be interesting.

And from reader Scott Roark, who doesn’t get into blogging too much but gave me permission to publish his e-mail: I would agree with you completely that the numbers differential between their freshmen years are stark.

I’m not going to make excuses for Stafford as he did some very freshman-like things as far as his decisions, which may have ended up in interceptions.

I will say this—Zeier had probably the best play caller in the history of the college game in Wayne McDuffie. He has no peer in my personal opinion. He was a master; just ask Coach Richt if you doubt it.

Eric had that “it” factor that Stafford also has. They were built for the big time as far as what I can tell. The numbers don’t tell the whole story though. There were at least 7 drops in the CFA Bowl by itself, and I’d gather that there were at least 25 drops on Stafford passes throughout the season. Stafford had no Brice Hunter or Andre Hastings to whom he could throw the ball. There were much better chances all the way around that guys would catch Zeier’s passes than there are now with Stafford.

I’ll tell you this though—-I am not a fan of Mel Kiper Jr., but he does know his business and he says Stafford is a potential #1 NFL draft pick. He has that much talent. I know all about potential and what it’s worth, but Staff showed some flashes of what he is capable of in the CFA bowl. The ball handling skills on the pass to Milner. The execution of the counter with Lumpkin. The throw to Raley. Zeier didn’t have near Stafford’s physical skills, and I think Staff will end up having a very balanced career with lots of throws, catches, attempts and TDs.

He will, in my personal opinion, be an All American before he leaves and will be one of UGA’s greatest players ever.

See you soon

Scott

NW DAWG…Hey Buck, you know I always call you by your old handle…hoping you’re feeling better soon, pray’in and thinking about you buddy…

Here in Tenersee it’s impossible to see the Dawgs play unless they’re play’in the Vomiteers. Instead my wife (an AwDarn grad) and I spent an enjoyable evening watching a TERRIBLE AU team take to it TN. Man, the lines are burning up the talk shows today after Coach Pearl and that’s always fun.

I like the Dawgs chances against Bammer and who knows? A few more wins under their belt and we may ALL be able to watch them on regular ESPN and the Duece.

BTW:Chip, I agree w/Claude, we have the big four. PS: Don’t let the chickens hear that statement or you’ll start a ruckus in the henhouse. Man their feathers ruffle easy.

Unlike many fellow Dawg fans, I don’t have ESPNU, so I didn’t get to see the game. Although I was watching Sportscenter this morning and Newman’s shot was the play of the day. It was a great way to start my day! I’m just curious, but was last night’s game UGA’s first on ESPNU? I wish the game was picked up by CSS for us local folks! Btw, great work on the recent blogs Chip.

Zeier was more of a finished product in that he was physically mature. Also, that was the first year of McDuffie’s system at UGA, so it couldn’t have been too complicated yet (relatively).

Bama got HAMMERED by a Vandy team that we beat by a dozen, despite them hitting a million three pointers.

The momentum of a 3 game winning streak in the conference (when is the last time that happened, by the way?)and the experience of having played The two best teams in the country in Florida and Wisconson equal a big upset opportunity to me.

If TK, Albert and Bliss can get inside and frustrate Bama’s post players, I think this is a great opportunity. It’s also on national TV - last time we got a national broadcast we pounded Gonzaga…

I’ll be at the Kentucky game with a “Chip” sign. You better come say hello Towers!

Last night was a huge win for the Dawgs. They really have to show that they can (a) win games they are supposed to (read: SC, Vandy, Auburn, etc.) and (b) steal some road wins. If they can start to do that, they should be playing in the field of 65.

It’ll be interesting to see how they fare in Tuscaloosa…

Buck: If you can’t get better, at least feel better.

Chip: So far, so good on the Blogs. Here’s a free future topic: “Where should Mustain transfer and why?”

My freshman year at UGA was 1982. UGA went undefeated regular season in football and played in the Sugar Bowl. UGA’s basketball team went to the Final Four (and was a much bigger Cinderella than NC State). I thought, “Man, these are going to be a great 4 years.” Herschel left, Bo Jackson, Jan Kemp, and no basketball recruiting lift from the Final Four that I can recall.

We went to UGA basketball games not because the team was winning but because it was UGA’s team (although Banks, Fair and Fleming were fun to watch, too).

I was in Athens for the Wisc. game. I felt at the time that this team was close to breaking out. We played tough that game but just could not get the shots to fall.

Last night we found out what can happen if the shots do fall. This team can play with the big guys. And I hope that tough schedule helps in the end. I’m excited about the possiblity of March Madness!

As for Zeire vs. Staff- I sure would love to see us throw over the middle like we did with Brice Hunter. That was one tough kid. I think that the WR talent will be more reliable next season. And Staff will show alot of improvement.

Ft. Worth, a year ahead of you. Hey what was that 7 footer skinny kid that used to just camp out under the basket and hope somebody stole it so he could dunk. I remember a couple of blowouts and the bench cleared, the crowd loved chanting for him to get it. Fleming was one of the most exciting players to watch ever IMO.

Hey Buck, these posts aren’t the same without you, hope you get well soon. Thanks for reporting on the Hoop Hounds Chip. Couldn’t get the game on tv in our area, this years Dawgs are a scrappy bunch, always like those wins at the buzzer, especially in someone elses house. As far as a comparison on Stafford and Zeire, I think the defenses are a lot more dominating now than they were several years ago when Zeire played. Both players posess that leadership role that it takes to play QB and to help make your team successful. As for comparing stats kinda hard to do Stafford just starting half the season.

Hey CoopDawg, I’m in Statesville and I feel your pain. Sometimes I feel like the only Georgia basketball fan in NC. Do you know of any others? I know Fox and Hound in Huntersville gets ESPNU etc; maybe we can coordinate some basketball fans.

Chip, I couldn’t get the game on TV or radio last night, so I had to settle for the agony of SI.com gamecasts. That score was stuck on 64-64 for like five minutes. It was a few minutes more before I found out how the Dawgs won from another site. When all was said and done, I didn’t care how, just thrilled that we won. This team seems to be realizing that it can play with anyone. I’ve believed Felton was the right guy since day one; I’m glad the team’s persistence is finally paying off. Can’t wait to watch the Dawgs beat Alabama this weekend.

Altamaha, The 7 footer’s name was Troy Hitchcock and I think he weighed about 160 when he signed. Seems like he was from Ohio. He could handle the ball okay for such a tall kid. I graduated and don’t know whatever happend to him. Remember Pee Wee Leonard?

HITCHCOCK! Thats great , thanks, I needed that. I had a buddy from home that went up to UGA with me and we used to go to those games all the time. Actually some of my best memories of UGA are those early 80s basketball games. ANY student not going to those games now, is really missing out. Football is obviously huge, big, grand scale, but its almost like you share that team with the world sometimes. BBall at Stegman was a lot more personal experience. Like those are my boys, my team, my school.

I’m sorry, make that 3 of us because the guy who turned the Daen on to us . he stayed in school. I’ll just be happy when I can watch the team play on Nationel TV. I am a student at UGA and listened to the entire game in my apartment (since we don’t get ESPNU up here w/ basic cable. When Yatta hit that three I screamed. Then when Newman, of all people, hit the game winner I started throwing stuff around the room. But I have attended every game this year and even before I got to school here I supported the Dawgs, even through the last 3 tough years. But I hope that everyone gets behind these Dawgs, because they are very exciting to watch!

Buck, I have no idea what would set you off like that, I certainly didnt mean to. I assume you half read what I said and then tried to read into it some kind of totally different meaning. You do seem to really want to construe some hidden message into about everything I say, but you know, sometimes when people say, “hey funny story man”, they mean, hey funny story man. All I was saying is that I remembered UGA BBAll game once gave me an almost unbelievable realization that I was actually there, a student of UGA, (which is a pretty big deal to a small town kid), and I thought it was funny that you had a memory of a game actually getting you into trouble with Dean Tate. I assumed since you brought it up, it was not a sore subject with you. How that deserves such a personal attack is beyond me. BTW, as many times as I have ever disagreed with something you have said, I do not beleive I have ever taken to personal attacks. “lifes too short for somebody like me”,For laughing at your story I suppose. “the more I post the more folks see me for who I really am”…????….be careful because that was entirely innappropriate and that statement might just give some kind of impression as well.

The MVP for the game should go to Newman. He hit three big three point shots in a two minute span. Without those shots we don’t have a chance to win. And thank Mike Mercer for inbounding that pass to the right person when the out play broke down. We can definitely beat Alabama. It will not be easy but it can be done. I think TK Brown matches up well with Hendrix and Davidson will have a hard time with Bliss, Singleton & Jackson. They will pound his skinny a* and I know he doesn’t like that kind of contact. If we shoot the ball well I like our chances. If Stukes has another off night it will be tough. If Mercer has an off night we will probably lose. But I have faith in this team, they are learning how to win thanks to Dennis Felton.

I’ve been excited about this bball season, especially since the Gonzaga game. You’re absolutely right, Chip, these guys play hard every game. Personally, I hope they don’t have to win Saturday for the Stegasaurus to be rockin’ next week. This is a much, much, MUCH improved team who deserves a lot of support.

As for Newman, Rick Majerus had a classic comment about him during the Gonzaga game - “Steve Newman has absolutely NO hops. He is devoid of athletic ability and quickness but he plays with as much heart as anyone I’ve ever seen. I love this guy!” Amen, Rick!

For those interested I will relay some DAWG history from the 50’s. I remember going to DAWG Bball games with my Dad in the Barn. The barn was an a 1920’s, wooden building that had cracks in the wall’s and the roof leaked. If it rained during the games they would place towels on the floor. It was always cold and the games were fun. You sat so close to the court that you felt that you were in the game.

Hey AltamahaDawg - Chicopee was the old mill building where we took the campus bus to register for classes, right? I usually didn’t have to wait long for registration because I was in the Honors Program and we got first crack at registration. I did go over with some guy who was the last person to register at that building before they shut it down. They hung those tiles with the abbreviations of the majors over the tables where we filled out the bubble-in forms. I took the tile for “CSC” as I was a computer science major at the time, and may still have it socked away somewhere. Shortly thereafter they remodeled the old plant into a posh setting — The Small Business Administration had offices there around 1987 as I recall. I never registered in the Coliseum, or was it the livestock area next to the Coliseum.

Got popped at student orientation the summer before school started, and they almost didn’t let me in to begin. Something about underage drinking on campus (was only 17 and the drinking age then was 18). A*’t. Dean Bracewell (who later took Dean Tate’s place) wasn’t pleased, but I got lucky.

Ft Worth, cant really relate to that whole honors program. Yes the old warehouse and the OBSTAR. Run around those tables and mark the card and sit there and wait for the yellow paper to come out. 10 folks yelling out ss#. By the time you got it back rejected because of one class, the other ones you could have been in closed out and you had to start all over again. I had to register late one winter and it took like 5 hours, no kidding, and I ended up just taking a bunch of classes never heard of just to book the hours and had to drop add every single one. Good times! By the time I was a senior, they had moved it over to Memorial at least, so at least you didnt have to Bus over. I’m guessing its all internet now.

Remember our Student ID number was our Social Security Number (as was my GA Driver’s License). At the time I thought it was a great idea as I didn’t have to memorize new numbers. Nowadays, the identity thieves would have cleaned us out in 2 minutes. I also remember when registering at Memorial the lines were by ID# — There were about 9 lines for the same first three digits (all full) and an empty line for all others. If your Social Security # was assigned outside of GA you could walk right up and register with no waiting.

My last quarter before graduating I signed up for the required intro Philosophy class — They cancelled it at the beginning of school, and all the others were full. I was livid, and the Department Head suggested I could take his night class. I explained to him that that would cost quite a bit extra and I couldn’t afford it. He told me I was out of luck, but I talked a graduate assistant teacher into letting me take her class.

Auburn is having a very good year in recruiting with 3 top 100 out of 20 committments.I think we jumped ahead of the Dawgs, Florida is wearing it out again>>

I’m a student at Georgia, and all I can say is WOW. A bunch of us were watching the game (our cable package has ESPNU) and when Newman buried the last three, we all went crazy. That game was one of the most exciting I’ve seen, and I hope that we can keep the mo going into these next few games. Hopefully Stegeman will be rocking next week for the UK and LSU games. GO DAWGS!

Just got out of the hospital for several days. They did not have net acess. I just read an e-mail from my pal Buck. He and I have replied and Buck, I am pulling for you.

As blog friends of both of you guys, Buck Altamaha was just trying to cheer you up in the post the way I read it. Altamaha and I have disagreed on things in the past but I can assure you he is a class guy and would not kick a man when he was down.

Alt, I remember the skinny 7 foot basketball player wandering around campus by himself as I drove a campus bus and I wondered if he had many friends because he was always by himself.

Chicopee, I was one of the first bus drivers on that route. We had a total eclipse of the sun during one of my shifts during registration. I was a senior by then and did not have to stand in many lines.

Just came across the wire. The famous FANS OF CHAN rejoice. CHAN has decided to stay at the Trade School and Nix of course has left the building.

UGA fans and alumni should have been supporting the basketball program long before now. It shouldn’t take a win to do that. UGA fans and alumni support the football team through thick and thin. They should do the same with the basketball team. Otherwise UGA will never have a basketball program worth a damn.

Cuz I remember that eclipse! Spring of 84,85 maybe? everyone walking around with those sheets of paper with a hole cut in it.

Thanks for the kind words on the Buck post, I knew he just read it wrong. Its hard to read somebodies posture in here, and sometimes wording is deceptive. He gets chapped at me for pickin on him every now and then, but its no biggie. (to me anyway) I hope he still smiles at the South PJ reference, when he is back in the groove.

Yeah Alt I remember the sheets of paper. They had them all over Chicoppe. I went under a tree, one of those ornamental kind with small leaves and the sun coming through the leaves gave an impression on the ground just like the pinhole reflectors. I watched the eclipse under a tree on my break. Remember, we used the old crappy buses for the Chicopee run. I was one of the few that could drive the old pieces of krap since we had gone to the modern RTS machines. I guess they have modernised the building since, back then it was a huge cavern.

Keep my coastal home safe, I will be down in the spring after our annual golf tournament 150 yards from my house. If you get tickets let me know. I got a parking space for you some would give big bucks to park.

Cuz, he knows I’m just making light of the earlier situation. I’m sure Buck will eventually see his mistake, if he hasn’t already. But I can act like a 5th grader if I want to…:p

I was also at UGA at the same time as Troy Hitchcock, and I am sorry to report that I read he died a couple of years ago as a result of a heart problem, I believe. On a lighter note, I am looking forward to March Madness more than I can remember in quite some time.

I’ll say again this UGA basketball program is not a winner.Yes they will win some games, but it was clear this team expected Alabama to win in the fourth quarter.Sorry the truth is not always nice.
