UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Hoop Dogs vastly improved
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We’ve been hearing a lot of SEC coaches say lately that Georgia is easily the most improved men’s basketball team in league. Well I’ve been sitting here perusing the current SEC statistics and comparing them to the final stats of last season - ah, another glamorous side of sportswriting - and it truly IS astounding the improvement the Bulldogs have made.
There are 19 main statistical categories the league office keeps up with. Georgia has made marked - and in most cases dramatic — improvement in 11 of those.
The Dogs are No. 1 in the SEC in offensive rebounding, ranked in the top 3 of 10 statistical categories and are in the top half of the league in 15 of the 19.
In and of itself that’s pretty impressive but put in the context of where they were last year, it borders on incredible.
They’re scoring 81.7 points per game compared to 70.3 a year ago.
They’ve gone from last in the league in field goal percentage (.431) to second (.496).
And their rebounding numbers are stunning: From seventh to third in overall rebounds; from 12th to fourth in rebounding defense; from 11th to third in rebounding margin (plus-8.0!).
In fact, Georgia has been out-rebounded in only three games all season. Not coincidentally, all three of those (Western Kentucky, Tech and Clemson) were losses.
Here’s the point: If Georgia continues to improve on its current learning curve, look out.
Meanwhile, the Dogs embark on yet another killer stretch of schedule. They’re at No. 38 Arkansas on Wednesday and No. 10 Alabama on Saturday followed by visits from No. 25 Kentucky and No. 16 LSU next week. Drop all four of those like they did the last tough stretch (No. 30 Tech, No. 19 Clemson, No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 1 Florida) and nobody will care how much improvement they’ve made.
How many of the next four do you think Georgia will win? What’s impressed you most - or least - about the 2007 Hoop Dogs?
And here is a final thought to contemplate: What does it say when Georgia’s last four head football coaches all still live in Athens (Dooley, Goff, Donnan and, of course, Richt)? Is there another school that can make such a claim?

Is Gaines OK? last stretch he was hurt and we didn’t win. Now another gut check time because these are all SEC teams. All the stats won’t amount to a hill of beans if the Dawgs don’t start winning these big games……I don’t remember, was Donnen known for defence or offence?

I’m sick of the sarcastic comments about UGA’s basketball team. Coach Felton inherited an extremely tough situation. He followed a coaching regime that was corrupt to say the least. In truth, he has completely turned around the program. The kids are held accountable, and the dividends are beginning to show. The truth is that UGA has one of the best coaches in America. Unfortunately, he takes the brunt of criticisms that he couldn’t control. I see many other top programs that have the Harrick approach, win at any cost. In terms of players, I predict an NCAA berth this year and a Sweet 16 run next year. Just check out the positions for next year: PG Sundiata Gaines, the leader of the team and Zac Swansey, a true gym rat, loves the game. SG Mike Mercer, UGA’s best player since Jarvis Hayes, great athlete that keeps getting better, Billy Humphrey, great shooter. SF Terrance Woodbury, 6’6 shooter that has a great build and stroke, this kid is a true sleeper and Jeremy Jacob, 6’7 kid with a great middle game, excellent stroke from 15 to 18 feet. PF Takais Brown, 6’9 pure power kid. The best low post scorer in years. This kid as a NBA shot, Albert Jackson 6’10, great size and power, will continue to develop, and Chris Barnes, 6’8 great dunker with power. C Dave Bliss 6’10 a true team player, Rashad Singleton 7’0, will continue to get better, best shot blocker in years, and Jeremy Price 6’9 270, not fat, serious muscle, pure power. Not many teams can match that size and power. That is the best complete roster in UGA history. This team will be special.

Altamaha, is it me, or are you a cynical grump of a fan? Are you Walter Mathau in disguise? Your writing does not belay a sunny disposition in your life. And I can only assume the reason for that is that you DON’T live in Athens, but you once did (alum), and you miss it so terribly, that nothing in life can measure up to the Classic City.
Jim Donnan himself has said many times why he’s stayed in Athens. We all know why Coach Dooley stayed (what’s he gonna do, move back to that cow town on the wrong side of the Chatahoochee River? As for Coach Goff, well, he played well here, so his name carries a lot of weight, and the business in which he is in, it makes sense to stay in a place where people know your name, and remember your playing days fondly.
Athens is so much more that Gainesville, Knoxville, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Clemson and especially, Atlanta. Auburn, while it is a cow town, is the best of the rest, but it does not have the cultural diversity of Athens, nor the richness in the Arts. Where do REM and Widespread Panic come from? Not from Gainesville, that’s for sure.
After I graduate, I am going to do all I can to ensure I never have to leave this heaven on earth. I love this city; I love this University. I love the way of life up here. If I want to raise hell, I can. If I want peace and quiet, I can have that, too. If I want the best food to be found anywhere in Georgia, I can find it in the multitude of restaurants in Athens. Terrepin Ale. Little Italy’s pizza. Molly O’Shea’s. Transmetropolitan. The 40-Watt Club. The Varsity. Siri Thai’s. Genco’s. The Georgia Theater. DePalma’s. Speakeasy.
Why the heck would anyone ever leave Athens if they didn’t have to do so? I can tell you right now, work is the only thing that would ever pull me away, and if I can drive there within in an hour or an hour and a half, then you know what? I’m not leaving. It’s worth it.
And y’all who claim to be Georgia fans, and not just Georgia football fans, no matter what heppens on this roadtrip, try and come up and see at least the weekend game next week. Make a day and night out of it. Walk around campus and downtown. Come up and see Felton’s boys play with a lot of heart and hustle. Rock the Stegesaurus!

Matthew, I love your enthusiasm, but your world view is going to change eventually if you have to take a job outside of Athens. I felt exectly like you do, and for over a year I commuted to Atlanta almost every day right after I got out of school. Believe me, that will get old really quick. If your time assumption is Atlanta, unless you’re working the graveyard shift you’re going to hit this awful little thing called traffic, and I can tell you that ten years ago it was 1.5 to 1.75 hrs each way every day to Buckhead when you factored in traffic. I’m sure it is even worse now, and I’m sure 316 sux even worse now when it merges into 85. Now, if you can get a job in Athens, you’re golden! Best of luck to you, and don’t be one of those guys delivering pizzas or bartending because you want to stay and can’t find a good job.

Chip…
I grew up in Athens. I’ve read you for a long… long time… I went to Cheater Shoals High School, and moved away when college time came calling… I’ve been gone for 12 years now… but still live in the state and read you online. I still show for all home football games… sometimes basketball games… My parents are close to retirement at UGA.
You are delusional about Georgia basketball.. hopeful… but delusional.
We can get one or two five star recruits over a 4 year span… but so does Kentucky… only they get more… so does Florida. So does Alabama. So does Arkansas.
I love Georgia in every way. I hope we go nuts and take the next four games… but what in our history of basketball has made you think we can do more than… perhaps a second place SEC East finish and a sweet 16 finish in the next few years?
Look at the banners up in the ceiling of Stegman! One Final Four ever. Thats it! I’ll be sitting second row in a bright red button up shirt near press row near the goal opposite side of the band for the Kentucky game. I’ll hold up a “Chip” sign. Come talk to me and convince me we should REALLY get excited about our basketball future.

Buck, I knew I’d get some grief for not talking enough football today. Truth is, I was busy with basketball today around the time I needed to blog so that’s what I blogged about. It was at about the time I was putting up my blog that I started getting the phone calls from south Georgia regarding Brian VanGorder. A friend in Statesboro first told me Georgia Southern’s coach was resigning to join the Falcons’ staff and I called the office to let my editors know it about. They’d also been hearing rumbling and, sure enough, it was true… . The reality is, VanGorder never quite caught on with the Georgia Southern. I can’t help but think that VanGorder got impatient with regard to his head coaching aspirations. Makes you wonder if his prospects would have been better had he hung at Georgia a while longer rather than rushing off to jacksonville to get the NFL experience so many think is necessary to build a HC resume… . But he’s a good coach and I’m sure he’ll do a good job with the Falcons’ backers.

Jim Sorgi a reserve “quarterback” who did not complete one stinking pass all frigin season long as 3rd year riding the pines in the NFL. Have fun watching your reserve “qb” Jim Sorgi for you ain’t got no one else to cheer on for the cupcake playing Stinking Badgers. No wonder you list Georgia Bulldogs as your 2nd favorite team in your handle with your put downs of women like you great because you are a man (boy) and liar about how you said the Big 10 would be 2-5 in bowl games yet again this season to SEC 6-3 with stomp of Ohio State for MNC. BuLLjoke, I’d like you to talk the same way about David Greene that you just did about Stocco. They are in identical positions. Actually, Stocco is higher as Seneca Wallace is #2 in Seattle and not Greene. UGA has more players in the NFL because there are more athletes in GA. Wisconsin is where they are because of a consistently great offensive line headed by the Outland Trophy winner this year who will be a top 5 pick in the draft this year. A large percentage of Wisonsin NFL players are linemen. If Barry Alvarez had half the talent that UGA has had, he would have won several National championships over the 15 years he was coach. His teams had to be smarter, more prepared, and better coached to beat more athletic teams week in and week out. Also, you know (and therefore are continuing your lying ways) that I never predicted a record for the Big 10. I did predict Wis and/or PSU would win. They both did and you can’t stand it. Keep dreaming/lying that I made any predictions about the total Big Ten performance. In reality, which you are not in tune with, I would have predicted mostly losses by the pathetic middle part of the Big Ten, but I never made any formal predictions so I’m not going to claim them now like you claimed you knew Fulmer was going to lose after predicting a 9-0 SEC record. I wouldn’t exactly rave about SEC performances featuring AuBarn barely beating Nebraska, though, and as for my Badgers they have an infinite win/loss ratio against the SEC over the last three years(your distorted way of saying 2-0.)
As for the women, my disdain for Title IX which is mandating a bunch of sports that no one else cares about either is not a put down of women. Women’s sports are a forced entity(see: WNBA) and I’m not going to let political correctness change my thoughts on it. If women are athletes in the same realm as men, let them play together and see what happens. If you were half as supportive of the men(since you’re a frontrunner that would be unheard of and that’s why you’re a women’s fan) you would have some credibility. BuLLjoke, you sound like a Vawl with all your talking about women’s bball and not the men. That is for frontrunners who don’t want to cheer the important team just because they’re not as successful.

Excuse me Chip Towers has a blog about how UGA has improved in shooting and this your retort Dawgtime ?
Number 33 Mike Mercer has taken 219 shots from the field, twice as many as the next nearest Bulldog, is shooting 42 percent the DEAD LAST WORST on the team has taken the 2nd most 3-point shots making 25 percent for the DEAD LAST WORST on the team has taken 43 free throw shots the most on the team and is second from DEAD LAST WORST at free throws too at 55 percent and while not responsible for bringing the ball up nonetheless leads the team in TURNOVERS too at 41.

Mike Mercer shot 40 percent all season last year and the reason we are improved this season in shooting percentage is that Mike Mercer who took the most shots for our team both last season and this season is hitting 42 percent this year and is and has been the dead last worst shooter for this latest 2 year period as well.
Mike Mercer was NOT the Starter last year but this year he is. He led the team in shots both years and stands at 94 more shots than Takais Brown missing 74 of the 94 more shots.

He is a terrific basketball player and you will eat crow by the time he finishes at UGA, you pathetic jerk who wakes up at 2:00 in the morning to write this b******. Do you have a life? Bull Dawg, I said that Matthew Stafford was the best QB we had. I also said that he would have to play through freshman mistakes. Was he ready? No freshman ever is. Was he the best QB we had? yes, and if we had stuck with him that lost to Ky. wouldn’t have happened. Coach Richt himself said that he almost didn’t swicht back to Joe T.but he did and we saw what happen. I posted at the time, asking to please not swticht back, to stay with Stafford. As for him not living up to his hype, he’s done that and more. You may not like it but almost every professional looking at his situation say that he worked his way through his freshman mistakes and “done good”. nOW MY POSITION HASN’T CHANGED FROM THE BEGINNING AND THE PEOPLE WHO POST ON THIS BLOG KNOW THAT SO YOU CAN TRY AND TWIST ALL YOU WANT TO BUT IT SIMPLY WON’T WORK. Somoan Dawg, I don;t know if I were a Southern fan that I’d be very happy with him. Ark: It appears that Nutt made some promises to those people and didn’t keep them. I mean when the WR dropped out and transfered to USC I just passed it off as an unhappy player; however, when Maltzhan leaves then we find out that these players and their families had a sit down with Frank Broyles and now Mustain has be given his release, I truly believe that Nutt let his mouth write a check that his butt couldn’t cash. He must have been desperate last year and I wonder if any sharks are circleing the boat now.

Shooting percentage .425 to Gaines .461 thats not that far off. Yeah Mercer takes a lot of shots but we would never score like we do if people were to scared to shoot. Mercer is an all around player and Georgia needs him just like they need Gaines, Stukes and the others to win games.

Oh and BullDawg, I was having lunch with my good buddy President Adams a few days back, what a super guy. Looking over some of those parking regulations. We were talking about how great coach Felton is. He also assured me that we will try to keep the Florida game in JVille as long as we can.

Alyhama…..well Bill King called a bunch of us “Ahatolla” once, (for foolishly believing in this coaching staff), so I guess that typo aint that bad.

Above, it was asked, “What does it say when Georgia’s last four head football coaches all still live in Athens (Dooley, Goff, Donnan and, of course, Richt)?”
Maybe it says they are there because they couldn’t get another job coaching!!! You can spin it and make it sound great all you want. But the dogs will forever average out to be the third-place team in the East.

Gen, I was just doing my best to bring him down a notch. You’re a good guy, don’t take it personally. I wouldn’t wish him on you guys either(maybe the Gators, though.) If the Dawgs ever make it to the B(C)S title game, BuLLjoke will be talking about Stafford’s INT that was a deflection off of a drop and the 3 TDs that weren’t because the WRs dropped them if they lose. BuLL probably thought Herschel should sit so he could be around 5 years, when we all know that was only there 3 and 1980 never would have happened. BTW, he may not have been ready, but Stafford WAS the best QB option this year. We all overhyped our options for the position this year.
Buck, good luck with the surgery. You’re in my prayers.

I live in Fayetteville, AR and I can honestly tell you that the Razorback situation is a mess. Malzhan is a coaching legend in this state and the Razorback fan base was thrilled when he landed at UA as OC. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he coached 4 D-1 prospects in high school that ended up signing with UA. Despite the success the Razorbacks had this year on the field, there were rumors during the season that many of the new players were not happy that Malzhan’s Spread offense was never implemented. Nutt claimed that Malzhan was calling the plays, but it seems clear with Malzahn’s departure to Tulsa that he never had control of the offense. One kid (Damien Wiliams) tranferred in Dec to USC Trojans, Mustain just announced he’s leaving last night (although not clear yet if he will end up at Tulsa with Malzhan), and a third is expected to announce that he is leaving today. Lots of rumors that other freshmen who signed last year to play in the Spread offense will also leave in the next couple of weeks.
It is apparant that Nutt has some real trust issues with the kids…underscored by a conversation I had last year with ESPN analyst Chris Mortensen. His son, Alex, was a big time QB recruit a couple of years ago and he landed at Arkansas. Then last year Alex transferred to Samford because, according to his dad, Alex didn’t trust the coaching staff any more.
Its a mess in Fayetteville…a lot like it was in the last days of the Goff era when a large portion of the fan base was hoping Georgia would lose so Goff couldn’t save his job. Although, I must say that Nutt appears to be in good standing with Broyles, so I don’t expect to see a change in the immediate future.
Watch Tulsa for the next couple of years…they are going to hang some points on some folks.
GO DAWGS!

Naw, I didn’t take it personally. I read between the lines pretty well…As it goes, you don’t need to chop block # 39. He’s rarely in the play but is all over the field…
…and I think Stafford will be a good one. How else will one get better than by playing, learning through mistakes..? Wearing the headset..? UGA has a good find in Stafford…

BuLLCrapp you lost all cred(i hope you know what that means) on this board the day you said UGA has the most talented and best WR in the history of the program. You have yet to say you made a mistake by not letting these guys play and prove themselves. Staff’s numbers would have been even better if they had not under performed.
Staff can never be Herschel. What people are saying is he can be the Herschel of qb’s idiot!
Be back later to chime in on dawgs.

Smokey, smokey, smokey..Vince Dooley couldnt get another job? it that what you are saying………idiot!
Maybe it says that coaching any other place would just be a letdown.
Technically about the question: Coach Richt is still coaching the team and he and Coach Goff don’t actually live in Athens, but thats not the point.

Who is the guy BuLLdog, and why does he feel the need to post these huge, really disjointed manifestos? Dude, a little reminder, if you actually have a little flow to what you write, and not be so scattershot (scatterbrained), then people might actually read what you write. It doesn’t help that you come off like a schizoid-paranoid manic kind of personality. Here’s a word I want you to embrace: Lexipro. It can help you in so many ways. Of course, getting some Lexipro would mean undergoing some much need psychiatric therapy. Remember, BuLLdog, first you have to realize there is a problem. Until you do, nothing will change.
Consider that my intervention with BuLLdog. From now on, I suggest we treat BuLLdog the same way I suggested we treat all of the hateful, ignorant bloggers on the Falcons blog: ignore him. He doesn’t exist on these blogs unless we give creedance to the crazy things he writes. Until the poor man seeks help, the best thing we can do for him is to ignore his nonsensical ramblings and not feed his obviously overinflated ego. So I implore you all, for this poor man’s own mental health, ignore him.
And Altamaha, I got it. but just because things haven’t gotten any better from your day, doesn’t make it right. And if you enjoy setting in the quietest crowd of 92,000-plus people in the world on Saturdays, then by all means, let’s keep it the same. The fact remains, Sanford Stadium has no homefield advantage for the Dawgs because it has one of the smallest student sections in the SEC and the NCAA. And it makes it worse that UGA seems to have the worst alumni fans over 50. I’ve stated before that Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, and certainly South Carolina don’t have this problem with their older alumni. Their older alumni don’t have a problem with acting like real fans, you know, standing up and cheering, getting off their wrinkled butts and actually paying attention. So why is this such a problem at UGA?
And Altamaha, I sincerely hope that you were being sarcastic about having lunch with Adams. If not, and you actively choose to keep such company, then, well, we’ll leave it at that.
But if I had to venture I guess, I would say that you were joking.

matt at the slc. get off that labtop and start taking notes! heh
i still haven’t seen enough of this current team to have an opinion. I’ve only been able to catch a couple of games this year and although they are vastly improved from last year, they still have a weak frontcourt. i’ll be estatic if the dawgs can pull a split in their next 4.

ConyersDawg,
My sentiments exactly. So let’s start doing that. Also, I’m not new, per se. Just back. The whole blogging thing got kind of vicious for awhile, so I took some time off. It was so bad, that there had to be about 3 or 4 people impersonating me at one time, so I let them have at it. I checked in a few times over the last year, and even going into last summer, there were people still posting as me. I guess some people need to get their jollies off in some way, right? So I figured the best thing I could do was let them. But this guy BuLLdog, he’s a new kind of crazy. He’s not an @$$ like some of the guys who were blogging on AJC a couple of years ago, but he’s, well, fanatical is how I would put it. In that dangerous, Al Quiada way, if you know what I mean.
And honest_abe, thanks for the suggestion. I’m taking 17 hours this semester so constant studying is on my RADAR, but I enjoy the times I’m sitting in the SLC and can kind of just talk to whomever and talk about the Dawgs. When I can look out the window and see Sanford Stadium, it just feels like something to do. But I have a tremdous ammount of Guilded Age as well as Italian reading to do tonight.
Also, when some of y’all were in school, and I’m talking fairly recent graduates (or maybe not), did any of y’all take History of Rock Music with Dr. Valdes? The guy is a trip. Looks like he definately spent time following The Dead. The class is fun as hell, and I recommend that anyone currently at UGA (and reading this) take that class if you can. Believe it or not, it satisfies that b.s. multi-cultural class we’re all required to take.

I’d like to take a moment out of this blog to wish Muhammed Ali a Happy Birthday.
As a young lad growing older in the great state of Tennessee, I witnessed a young mustang named Cassius Clay spring onto the boxing world by defeating one Sonny Liston. I recall listening to the match via AM radio. ( even back then, we knew Liston took a dive in this bout ). His politics aside, in the world of boxing Muhammed Ali is the Greatest of All Time. Thankfully, we can still watch him on ESPN Classic today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHAMP…

Whoever said recently that Arkansas football was like a soap opera was dead on: Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain, undefeated as a Razorbacks’ starter after a stellar high school career, has been given permission to transfer to another university, coach Houston Nutt said Tuesday.

ConyerDawg, you may be right about AJ Green. I live in Summerville, SC and have watched him play. He is the real deal. I’m looking forward to many Stafford to AJ Green passes in 2008 and 2009. This kid was ready for the college game when he was in ninth grade. Thanks for the link to the vid clips. I’ve never seen those. All Dawg fans should click on the link you provided and watch the AJ Green highlight clips. He is incredible.

Dawgs got jobbed! - tough call to teach an Alabama player not to travel with the rock, but the refs are supposed to know that stuff. Check the bank accounts on this one - ball hit the rim as well. ‘Inadvertant whistle’???? What is this, rec league? If there is a silver lining it is that Alabama wins enough games in this manner each year to keep they’re sorry coach around. Good thing for that guy it’s a football town. Anybody seen Shula?

Dawgs got screwed today. Brown got foulded on the last basket UGA made and the fouls called on Newman was awful when he actually jumped straight up and got rebounds to be called for fouls. Bama should have had about 5 more blocking fouls on Gaines than were called. WHy bother playing the games if the f__king officals are going to play such a huge part in helping a higher ranked team. Absolute bulls**t, this is why I can’t really ever get into basketball, the officals just play too big a part in the game. Oh yea how bout when the crowd called the travel on Newman, that the beginning of the come back. Makes me sick.
I will commit to sending Coach Felton $10 for the fine if he rips the officals on the Bulldog hotline Monday night… who is with me let’s gooooooooo ahahahahaha
