UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Hoops, recruiting on upswings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings all. Hoping you had a good weekend and actually are continuing to have a good weekend with the MLK Holiday. No such thing as a three-day weekend in the newspaper business, but we’re happy to serve you.
Lots to talk about after the exceptional showing by the men’s basketball team and the ongoing recruiting push in football.
Let’s talk hoops first. I’m sure not a lot of y’all got to see the Vanderbilt game since it wasn’t televised and Stegeman was, as usual, only half-full Saturday. But you should know that it was a very impressive victory. The Commodores, who were coming off an upset win over Tennessee, brought their A-game. They made 8 of their first 10 3-pointers and generally played their butts off. Yet the Bulldogs (10-5, 2-1 SEC) absorbed their best blows came back swinging hard. Billy Humphrey and Levi Stukes provided the knockout punches.
I’m starting to see some chemistry develop and there might be just enough talent for these Dogs to make some noise this year. We’ll definitely find out a lot this week as they travel to Arkansas and to Alabama Wednesday and Saturday. A split or a sweep and you’re looking a team with some serious pedigree. The following week brings LSU and Kentucky to town and that’s a good opportunity for the ol’ Stegosaurus to be rockin’ again.
Speaking as the guy whose duty it has been to cover them the last three years, it’s nice to see Georgia above .500 in SEC play and, more importantly, just putting up a hard, competitive effort every night. I promise you, neither me nor Winkeljohn nor Wyche nor any of us beat guys are homers, but it’s much easier and more pleasant to cover winning program than it is one that’s struggling.
As for football, this is the time of year that has the “recruitniks” foaming at the mouth. Georgia’s obviously already in good shape with seven players signed and in school, and another 15 commitments pledged. But Rodney Garner and the Dogs are far from done.
They’re still out there working hard for some major, blue-chip prospects and, as has been their forte’ under Mark Richt and Garner, I expect them to reel in at least one or two by national signing day.
Who do you think it will be — Cameron Heyward, who visits Florida this weekend, Georgia on the 26th and Ohio State after that? What about Allen Bailey? Remember that fantastic story our Steve Hummer did on him back during the high school season?
And what about Chris Little?
Don’t count out Morgan Burnett, what with Tech’s Chan Gailey shopping around like it was the week before Christmas.
I can’t get a read on this Lennon Creer kid, the running back out of Texas. He never answers our phone calls but he reportedly still list the Dogs as being in the hunt.
A new name popped up recently in Orlando Franklin, an O-lineman from south Florida who apparently signed with Miami last year. Don’t know much about himm but Georgia thought enough of him to send new OL coach Stacy Searels and three other assistants to an in-home visit this weekend, according to a Rivals.com report. Guess the Dogs feel like they could get him.
Tell me which unpledged blue-chippers you think Georgia’s going to get. And will the basketball Dogs get a win at either Arkansas or Alabama?
P.S. We’re keeping an eye on the Rice head coaching vacancy and the report by the Houston Chronicle that Georgia DC Willie Martinez is a candidate. Carter and I are skeptical but we’ll get to the bottom of it.

Chip, I belong to both Rivals and Scout. I find Rivals to be much more accurate in their assesment of talent, and they are also on top of things more. I think Jamie Newberg’s FSU background has over the years, played a large part in influencing him. Now that he has a fat pocketbook after being acquired, I feel he has lost a step and is somewhat out of touch. I am seriously considering dropping Scout because I find Rivals so much more in tune. That said, I put more credibility on their web site. Just an opinion from one person!

I hear that Franklin is a hoss and is very much interested in UGA.
And back to basketball, was perhaps a bit too harsh last week. I used to follow the Dogs during the Durham days, right through the Harricks. But after the Harrick debacle lost all interest and felt Felton was a choice almost as poor as Jirsa. I still think the jury’s out on him, but am glad they are showing some signs of life this year.
To those who questioned my UGA pedigree, here it is. Graduate of Georgia Southern and then UGA law school.

I hope Greenlee keeps his word. I don’t really know and so far, form what I’ve read, doea anyone else know where Bailey, or heyward stand. They say Ga. in the mix but they are doing a good job of not letting anthing out. B urnett just said that he is a Tech guy in sptie of Gailey leaving. I thought our best shot was the kid from Miami but I see where he’s visited his old coach at FIU. and was really impressed. I feel as good or better about Chavis coming from Hargrave as I do about any of the other four. Greer? He’d be the most silent commit in the history of Dawg FB. Now , I hope I’m 100% wrong and they all come to Athens. BASKETT BALL- We don’t get to see or hear anygames unless ESPN is having a “bad hair day” and forget to flip the switch. From afar, I the team is starting to play as one, including Mercer, yes they’ll have a chance to do well. Chip, I should have saved my post on the last blog to show how much I cared about basket ball when I was on campus. The story was funny and true. Oh well.

Chip,
A couple of recruits that have expressed interest in attending GA. Cortez Myles, a 6’2” 255lbs, 3 star DL out of Mississippi is interested in GA. Kevin Bryant 6’6 360 lbs., 4 star OT out of Florida has also expressed interest in GA. I don’t think things are as bleak as a lot of fans think, plus Allen Bailey and Miguel Chavis are leaning toward us as well.

He’s on a mission and I’m ever so glad the Mark Richt has shown that he to is now on a mission.

Hey BuLLjoke, look at the posts below and say it’s BS I didn’t predict that at least Wis or PSU would win if not both. These were in response to your 9-0 prediction before pretending to know that UT would lose all along. Obviously, my comments regarding THE OSU were incorrect, but I’m not going to hide and pretend I predicted the opposite:

BuLL, don’t jump off a bridge when the Badgers and/or PSU win tomorrow and take another one off that tally. Also, hopefully your boyfriend hides the prescriptions when THE OSU manhandles a weak and overmatched UF team and everyone goes to bed early ala Nebraska ten years ago.

Brewersfan, great choice in baseball teams, I await BuLL’s response to your post (post game) and my pregame post that at least UW or PSU (if not both)would win. I didn’t think that (N is for nolledge) Nebraska would give Aubarn a run, but even that happened. Go Dawgs, but let’s take the blinders off, the SEC is a great conference but it is NOT heads and shoulders over anyone else like some on here believe(I understand how that would be when the main OOC competition is ACC, but there is much better out there.) It is also not an excuse to play a pathetic OOC schedule(bring back Clemson!) I have said here before, the SEC is deeper than the Big 10 by far this year but the Big 10 is better at the top, and that’s 2 for 2 and 3 for 3 as of next week when THE OSU destroys UF.

Hey Chip; any word on who our punter will be for 07? I remember watching other punters in pregame warmups this year but never really payed attention to who they were. I think Bailey comes to Athens only if he’s promised he can play and not be shirted. If not i think he goes somewhere else.

Hello, Sautee Dawg. In regard to your question, I can’t say I have any inside scoop on who will be the punter next season but if I were to hazard a guess I’d say it’d be Brian Mimbs to start. Mimbs is a walk-on and will be a redshirt junior next season. He’s always punted very well next to Gordon Ely-Kelso in practice and, as you know, has performed well as part-time kickoff man (see Chick-fil-A Bowl). That said, I fully expect Drew Butler of Peachtree Ridge to walk on with the Dogs and he, of course, will be given every opportunity to earn the job.

Thanks Chip;
The onsides kick in the Chic-fil-a bowl was sold so well, the fans in our section thought he missed the ball when he kicked off. That play came out of nowhere about like the blocked punt against LSU last year in the SEC championship game. Seems like we always come up with a good punter, glad Coutu’s back also.
thanks again for the info Chip.

Heck I didn’t even know that Brandon Miller was testing the NFL. Man, what was he thinking, he had a terrible year. He might be better off at DE, but how quick can he pick it up. Question is, can he help the defense at DE? Maybe try him at weakside LB. He can make plays from the backside w/his speed, instead of head up w/the TE all the time. Miller/Howard can switch positions, but then again, Marcus looks comfortable at DE. Just speculating, that’s all.

Georgia is in the running for the following players - Allen Bailey, Miguel Chavis, Lennon Creer, Cameron Hayward, Orlando Franklin, Kevin Bryant, Cortez Myles, Malachi Lewis and Eugene Kinlaw. According to sources Bailey, Chavis, Franklin, Kinlaw and Myles are leans to GA. As far as Antwane Greenlee is concerned he keeps stating that he is committed to GA as well. Also IMO with Brandon Miller agreeing to switch to DE this will allow Bailey to get an opportunity to compete at the MLB position especially since Washington is hurt and might not be available next year. As far as Creer is concerned it was reported over the weekend that he had narrowed his picks down to three i.e, GA,OK and TN but IMO he probably will wind up at Oklahoma even though I have been told that Tennessee made some promises about him playing TB next year.

Chip, the answer to your question is None. Our 2007 High School recruiting hit a brick wall in November. Now all we can do is sit back and watch our rival schools pick our state apart building their teams with Georgia talent. For the first time in, like, ever, we will likely not have a single prospect in the top 100 of anybody’s list on campus this Fall. On top of that, only one of the top 10 in Georgia. In fact, Tech has more Georgia top 10 recruits than we do, for the first time since Bobby Dodd roamed the sidelines probably. We have some good prospects that will be coming, but by no means did we get any of the top guys this year. Looks like Richt needs to gather the recruiting staff and determine what went wrong this year and what they can do to fix it for next year (which, BTW, has gotten off to a good start).

Actually, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the class coming in. We’re filling our needs.. on the lines especially. To me that’s more important. I think rating these players are overrated anyway. Brandon Miller was a 5 star prospect. He hasn’t step up to his full potential yet. He will be a senior and he will have to take upon a leading role along with Oliver. I really hope Brandon busted out and have a blast year.

Chip,
Please tell me that you’ve gotten to the bottom of “Ticketbooth-Gate.” The Administration really needs to be called on this. I know this is just my first year on campus, but I’ve been told by many of the juniors in my class that this is the treatment they’ve come to expect from Michael Adams and Damon Evans when it comes to sporting events.
Something really needs to be done to correct the Administrations current attitude towards students and sporting events. They are alienating what will become their new alumni, and that does not bode well for the future. At football games, Sanford Stadium has one of the smallest student sections in the whole SEC, not to mention the country. At a University this size, that should just not be.
The student section is so small, that now they break up the season into 4-game packages for students. Students are randomly assigned one of 2 packages of games to attend with their student tickets. I know many old alums, and they are taken aback by this policy. Many of the alums I’ve spoken with, all over the age of 40, wish that the UGA Student Section at Sanford Stadium were larger, because that means more noise, and yes, a better homefield advantage, something that they bemoan has disapeared under Michael Adams and Damon Evans.
Chip, some kind of real investigation into these practices by the administration needs to be done, so that the students here aren’t treated like second-class citizens when it comes to sporting events. Like I said, these policies are alienating future alumni. And while Mr. Adams might not be around to see the ruination of these practices, Mr. Evans might be.
Something needs to be done.

Its not as bad as a lot of people are making it out. As it stands right now we have the # 1 recruiting class of offensive linemen. Our overall class of recruits is # 9 according to Rivals and # 10 by Scout, the 2 largest recruiting services. BTW IMO you are going to be surprised in the next 3 weeks or until Nat. Signing Day- 2/7/07 by whom we will be able to get. Part of that brick wall you talk about was caused by not knowing how many scholarships we would have available, by not having an OL coach and by some of these recruits have been playing the schools against each other to get them to guarantee them immediate playing time and/or their position of choice. Also IMO we will be signing Allen Bailey as according to sources close to him he has been a lean to us all along. As far as Chavis, Franklin, Bryant, Myles, Lewis and Kinlaw we didn’t approach them, they approached us about coming to GA. Plus we haven’t even talked about Creer or John Brown two other top 100 overall ranked prospects that we are in the mix for. So brother Dawg I would say keep the faith anyway rating of these kids is not an exact science as you never know before hand which ones will be able to step up to the next level.

Guys, I’ve not been clear in my posts. I have no problem with what we have right now in our recruting class. The only thing that I’ve wondered about is that it seems as if more top ranked recruits have indeed gone to other schools this year. I’m not at all putting down anyone because it’s what’s inside that really counts We’ve all seen over the years some of these top ranked guys not have on the major college level. As I’ve posted before, for some reason I have a lot of confidence in our new “OL” coach and I think the “OL” will be ready. So if I’ve given the opinion that I’m the old “doom and gloom” guy, I’m not and how many days to kick off? I DO HOPE THAT FELTON AND THE GYM DAWG CAN MAKE A POSITIVE MOVE UPWARD IN THE SEC. I’M PULLING FOR THEM. I it’s time to check out this TV. listings and see if the ESPN people are haveing a “bad hair day” and may forget to flip the switch so we can see the Ark. out here.

82DAWG I remember those days as well and it used to get me upset as well to see the Vols, AU, Clemson, Tide and Gators picking off some of the best talent out of GA and we wound up with the left overs but that was due to Ray Goff trying to look the part of being a HC and not surrounding himself with top flight assistants. BTW Ray was a very good recruiter and decent position coach but never ever should have been hired as a head coach as he was way over his head. Donnan while being a great recruiter and good head coach wasn’t tough enough which showed with his teams under performing.

82Dawg I thought you would find this interesting as I pulled this off of Scout’s free information site- Georgia has only three of the top ten recruits ranked in the top ten committed – Caleb King, Israel Troupe and Antwane Greenlee. The Dawgs’ rival, Georgia Tech, has four players ranked in the top ten, which is a reversal of recruiting fortunes for the two schools. The Bulldogs are still recruiting Cameron Heyward and Allen Bailey, both of whom are ranked in the top ten according to Scout.com.
Georgia, however, has more players in the state’s top 25 than any other school with ten total players. Other notable players the Bulldogs have committed to them include (state ranking in parentheses):
Trinton Sturdivant (NC #9) Charles White (SC #16) Logan Gray (MO #2)
I hope this makes you feel a lot better about this incoming class.

I still say that this is a good year for football recruiting. We have at least one 4 star player or better at every position other than (DE, DL, and FB).
FB, we can’t really offer any more scholarships at this position because of what we have on the roster already.
DL - This was a relatively weak year at Defensive Tackle in the state of Georgia. We are still in the hunt for Heyward.
DE - We are in the hunt for Bailey, I believe he will sign with UGA.
There is usually at least one position where at the end of the year, you “hoped” to do better. If Bailey signs and Heyward does not, that position is D Tackle. Other than that… solid accross the board.
I think part of the reason we lost some momentum with recruiting in November is that we already signed 75% of our class. This is getting earlier and earlier each year.
We have about 1/3 of the 07 class in place BEFORE signing day for 06. That is getting a little crazy. At this pace, we could have 90% of the class in place before the 07 high school season begins?

Big Dawg, once we land Bailey and Heyward that will give us 5 of the top 10.
Don’t make me post the caleb king video again! Caleb is the best back out of Ga. since Hearst. Thaat’s huge folks. Some of the high school coaches and recruit experts think greenlee is the best ol in 10 years. We have a great class and the 2008 will be the best ever.
We already have 2 silent commits for 2008 to go with the others. BTW, we already have 2 of the top 100 players for 2008, and the silents who I don’t know who they are yet, butheard will make the dawgnation very excited.
D. Tyson will be the best DT out of Ga. since Stoud and Golston.

Hey, speaking of Garrison Hearst, I was in line to get tickets at the AMC on NorthPoint Parkway and Mansell last Sunday and he and his family were right in front of me. Really nice guy, he talked about the Dawgs for a couple of minutes while waiting.
I will believe that King is a Bulldog the day he steps on the playing field.

Maybe I am being jelous or something but how is it that whenever a name of a truly talented player from anywhere outside of the states of Georgia or Florida are highlighted the damn Gators are among thier choices and not the bulldogs. Could someone please school me on that. What allows the Gators to find these top flight players far away from the confines of Gainesville?

ConyersDawg I was wondering where you were at?
Big Dawg, once we land Bailey and Heyward that will give us 5 of the top 10. I hope we get both of them as that will actually give us 6 as they don’t count Justin Anderson out of Ocilla via Hargrave. IMO who happens to be the best OL recruit we have had since Mike Wilson and Guy McIntire you do remember Guy don’t you. He was one heck of an offensive guard blocking for Herschel then all those great SF 49ers teams of the 80’s and early 90’s.

Ok I’m bringing Brandon Miller back.. I just saw a documentary on Chi Bears MLB Brian Urlachger. Bears first had him at OLB.. Lovie Smith moved him to MLB and he’s making more plays.. the point is, I think MLB might just best suit for Brandon Miller. Same size and prolly same speed. Therefore, move Dew to the strong side and Ellerbe or Hebron on the weak side. Yeah, I know, I’m building a fantasy defense. It might work on my son’s playstation. Seriously though, what ya’ll think dawg fans?

It really does stink in Little Rock. Mitch Mustain left to be w/his high school coach in Tulsa. Man, what is up w/that. Things sound nutty in LR. Nutt could be on the hot seat again. He may have to look for another high school OC and lured some of its players too.

Sledge, did you watch TV a couple of weeks ago, it was an evening program broadcast nationwide, about Gator football? That’s how they get out-of-state prospects.
But CMR recruits nationwide (Stafford wasn’t a local product) so it works out. And face it, Gainesburg is warmer than Tulsa.
