UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

All’s quiet in Athens

The aftershocks of Nick Saban’s hiring at Alabama were still reverberating throughout college football on Thursday, but back here in Athens, Ga., things were cool, calm and quiet. In fact, you couldn’t get much quieter than it is on the Georgia campus. Classes don’t resume until Monday and the Bulldogs aren’t hosting any recruits for official visits for a couple of weekends yet.

Meanwhile, it doesn’t look like Mark Richt will be hiring an offensive line coach any time soon. He has said he’d like to have one in place by the time the dead period is lifted and that’s not for a couple of weeks still. I know for a fact he has not interviewed anyone.

Yesterday, message boards were ablaze with the rumor that Clemson O-line coach Brad Scott was Richt’s target. I’ve known Scott since he was the head coach at South Carolina, so I gave him a call. He was duck hunting somewhere in South Carolina and didn’t sound like he was about to jump Tommy Bowden’s ship. Scott had heard the rumor, too, (via S.C. writers) but was very, very emphatic that he didn’t want to be quoted about the Georgia job. Scott emphasized everything he said needed to be off the record, so I’m on thin ice here but, in a nutshell, he’s not looking for work, he has a job and the only person who should comment on Georgia’s search for a line coach is Richt.

Richt, of course, is not commenting.

Now Richt and Scott have a long and distinguished history together. In fact, it was Scott that showed Richt the ropes at Florida State. Scott was offensive coordinator at FSU when Richt came in to coach quarterbacks and Richt started calling plays while Scott was still coordinator there, just like Mike Bobo was doing with the Bulldogs. Then, of course, Richt succeeded Scott as the Seminoles’ OC.

Meanwhile, Richt is heading out to Hawaii this weekend to coach in the Hula Bowl. You’ll recall he was supposed to last year but ended up hanging back in Athens to make sure Rodney Garner remained at Georgia. Nick Jones, Gordon Ely-Kelso and Danny Verdun-Wheeler will be representing the Dogs at the annual showcase/bowl game for graduating seniors.

Now Richt could hire an O-line coach while he’s in Oahu (that’s where Vince Dooley was when he hired Richt) but it’s doubtful. I guess we’ll see.

Heading down to Gainesville, Fla., tomorrow to catch the Dogs in their SEC basketball opener against the defending national champion Florida Gators. The team was surprisingly upbeat and optimistic about their chances in the O-Dome. It’s a good thing because they’re the only ones who believe they’ll win. Again, we’ll see.

So some of you guys claim to be well-sourced. When do you think Richt will hire an O-line coach and who do you think it will be? Who should it be? Does it matter?

Yes it matters. We need a o-line coach to reassure some of the o-line men greenlee in particular. I heard the info on Scott on Rivals radio. Chip your saying opposite of what the radio reported about him putting his name in the hat because of the unstability at Clemson.

Richt said himself that he was overwhelmed at the response to the job and some of the high profile coaches who contacted him. It’s a good situation.

Quiet in Athens is not bad. It feels so good to know your school is heading in the right direction.

New OC, recruiting is well and off to a great start for next year as well, the future looks like multible sec and Natl. champ. It’s great to be a BullDawg.

I search for info. not like BuLLDawg, he must have been a statistics major, but in no way am I saying I’m sourced.

Also Chip, I thought the dead period ends tommorow. That’s why many think the o-line hiring will take place hopefully no longer then Monday.

I’ll probably be assassinated by the Bama Mafia for leaking this secret, but the new OL coach at UGA will be Nick Saban. The Coca-Cola Company has agreed to pay the former Bama coach $5 million a year to be UGA’s OL coach. As part of the deal, the coach formerly known as Saban will change his name to Mello Yello. Coach Yello will distribute Mello Yello coupons and samples to fans in attendance at games, and will get to drive the Mello Yello race car. Coach Yello will have a press conference later today where he will deny that he will be UGA’s OL coach, followed by a press conference tomorrow where he will deny that he will ever be UGA’s OL coach. I think you know what will be the subject of Coach Mello Yello’s Saturday press conference. When asked about his reasons for leaving Bama before getting to Bama, Coach Yello said, “While I’m not going to be UGA’s OL coach, the reason I’m leaving Tuscaloosa, even though I’m never going to leave LSU, I mean Auburn, or whatever the school is called, is because or not because of the big bag of cash, and mostly because of or not because of, as the case may be, the fact that I want my kids to be able to read and/or write, which frankly just won’t happen in the state of Alabama. By the way, have a coupon for delicious Mello Yello. It’s the greatest soft drink in the world. To summarize, I’m not ever going to leave Michigan State, LSU, the Dolphins and/or Auburn or Alabama or whatever that school is called.”

BTW guys, great read today in the ABH about the half time speech. Got chill bumps reading it. Plus it’s done by Loran so you know it’s good.

Chip, can you check on a tackle named Orlando Franklin in Fl. He was a Miami signee but didn’t get in. Ge is now apparently 50/50 between Miami and Georgia. I never even heard of the kid.

All SHOULD be quiet in Athens. The Dawgs are 9-4 and should end up in the final poll rankings……….. BUT, more reasons to be quiet are Saban going to Bama and how LSU really put a butt smack on ND!! On my gosh!! Now that’s the way SEC football is suppose to be played— strong running game, mixed run-pass attack, and quick-hard hitting defense. CMR should take note and learn from Les Miles— that’s the type of look UGA should be aiming for.

Chip, if that was you, well, I don’t know if that was dripping in sarcasm or angry.

I’m going to go with sarcasm.

Rockdale, be nice!

Chip is not Carter Strickland for crying out loud! We finally got rid of that piece of crap, and Chip is an actual journalist who cares about what he writes and what he writes about.

The one thing I can say about this team that I’ve heard filtered through my same grapevine that told me, during Spring Practice and before the G-Day Game that the team (and by team, I mean the vast majority of the offensive and defensive players) prefered Matthew over Legacy Boy, is that many of the younger guys on defense were heartened by the news that Oliver is returning.

Yes, I know, that is not exactly breaking news. But when your defense’s best player opts for the draft, and you lose all of those senior linebackers and their leadership, and yes Dawg fans, Battle as well, then a guy like Oliver becomes the guy all of the younger guys are looking up to.

Him staying is going to be huge for this defense. And from what I hear, Oliver is up to the task to step into the role as leader of this defense.

So maybe that’ll give y’all some warm and fuzzies.

As for O-line coach, I only know who I want, and I think guys like Buck will agree with me: Hugh Nall. Now, I know we more than likely aren’t going to get him, but I think Coach Richt should at least offer him the job, and offer to pay him more than Auburn is, that way, it gives Hugh more to think about.

Since it is quiet, here is a topic.

Who are the top two tight ends that have played for UGA over the past 20 years, so since 86 season? Based on their UGA play, not what they did in the pros? Who are your top two and why?

Possible candidates are Larry Brown, Ben Watson, Leonard Pope, Troy Sadowski, Jevaris Johnson, Randy McMichael, or any that I ommitted. Excuse the spelling of the names.

UGA has been blessed with excellent tight ends over the last 20 years, who are your two picks!

By BirdDawg

January 4, 2007 06:42 PM | Link to this

I would say, based on production in Athens alone it’s Watson and McMichael.

But that’s just raw numbers. The older tightends, they did other things well. Like blocking. And blocking. And um, blocking.

I would like to comment on the Sugar Bowl, can you believe LSU did not score a TD against Auburn, but they physical kill us and our season was never what it should have been up to the UGA game which we were more healed, but we didnt play like it. UGA made us play bad with a BREAKOUT game. My point is why does Notre Dame, who has not won in the last nine bowl games get a BCS bowl #12 in the country and a light schedule. My opinion, they are overated every year by news media and ESPN. Did you realize they were pick as the preseason #1 by several news outlets? It is a shame to keep other worthy teams like Rutgers, Wisconsin and Auburn out of BCS picture because they are ND and have a large following. There are 5 schools in the SEC who could take ND to the woodshed. They have millions in the War Chest because NO SPLIT in bowl revenues...Its a disgrace to college football. Last note>>I told you Dawgs previously about the Bammer class, you get a example of it since the Saban hire$$$$$

Big Dawg, sorry did not respnd to your question last week, but spent New Years in Birmingham with Auburn buddies. I coached at West Rome in the late 70`s. East Rome had the athletes during this small era and it was tough, but had good seasons. I lived off Dairy Road in Shannon, bought the house on the Court House steps(foreclosure). It was across the road from a huge pasture, forgot the road name. I was in business with Doc Ayers, assistant under Coach Dooley and Jim Marrs(Western Sizzlin)while at WR.To be honest, all my coaching schools WR was not my favorite, Princple did not like football and several WEIRD TEACHERS.ROME IS A NICE TOWN, BUT HAS GROWN SINCE MY DEPARTURE.Do you remember Billy Atkins, Realtor, dawg supporter, he was a friend a solid dawg supporter. My sister is a Shorter College alumus.I held the 100 yard dash record(9.8) at Darlington Schools for several years while in high school.I have alot friends in Rome

I spent the New Year Holiday in Virginia. It was most enjoyable to watch the Dawgs rally to spank the Hokies. I listened to sports talk in the area the day before talking bad about the Dawgs and our fans. The host said the UGA fans would head back to Athens with a cleat in their face…. I think the only cleat marks this past Sunday were located on the south end of the north bound pooch lipped Hokies.

Remember Larry Kennebrew, Sylvester Elkins, and the Tutt brothers at east Rome? I played against those animals and the huge offensive line at Cedartown. In ‘78 Cedartown’s O-line weighed more per man than the falcons that year. Don’t remember too much about West Rome that year, must’ve been because of bouncing my head off of Kennebrew’s thigh pads all night… lol

Hey Hunk, the names you mention is the reason you did`nt hear much about West Rome. The were fine athletes. we chase those Tutt boys all over the field and seldom caught them.I thought Kemmebrew(6-2, 240, 10.0 100) is the best athlete to come out of Rome high schools. He never qualified to enroll at UGA. We tried to get all those East Rome studs at Auburn, but they lack grades.I have alot of friends in Cedartown with Coach Ayers being a friend since we coach against each other when I was in Rossville.Good football town although they were down this past year. Ray Beck, All American at Tech from Cedartown is not well, Coach Ayers told me today he might not make it. He is a good guy. I play in their golf tournament every year at Cherokee.Damn you been Bulldog all your life!!!!Hope BuLLdawg does not get jealous about my LONG post<<>>>PLEASE, we gave you Dooley and Erk, no more,Coach Nall is happy camper at Auburn woth all those big OL coming along..

War Eagle—

My High School coach took me to an Auburn game way back then, introduced me to Doug Barfield… He said this is my middle linebacker, he’s small but he’s slow.

I think Kennebrew ended up at Tennessee Tech then played a few years for the Bengals before he blew out his knees. You’re right though, everyone wanted him, but he was dumber than a sack of hammers. The man could play some ball though… never seen anybody so big that was so fast. I remember they had an audible… “Kennebrew right, 2 hole, on 2” he would even shift towards where he was going to run, but it didn’t matter, we couldn’t stop him even knowing where he was gonna run. The hard part for me was listening to his kids on the sideline yelling “run daddy, run” as he steamrolled over me.

Out of curiosity, has anyone heard anything about moving Brandon Miller to DE? We have unbelievable depth at the LB position with Marcus Washington, Dannell Ellerbe, the Akeems, Darius Dewberry, and even Rennie Curran coming in as a true freshman. Any thoughts on this or info pertaining to this would be appreciated. He was recruited as a weakside defensive end in ‘04. Go Dawgs!

Adding to the excellent group of tight ends above, lets not forget Jermaine Wiggins who was a very consistent performer that had some NFL success. Dawgs have been very solid at this position for a very long time.

Who will pick up the torch next year with Martrez leaving? Will Ward be ready for prime time?

Also, does anyone have any guesses at who they think are three starting linebackers will be next year? Miller is obviously one, unless we move him to DE to fill the gap left by CJs departure.

I thought Evans was impressive in the bowl game. With Oliver returning along with the young talent at safety, UGA should have one of the best defensive backfields in the nation next season.

Jermaine Wiggins had more than a little success in the NFl.

Bird Dawg and low country:

I forgot about Michell. He had some great games and was a good blocker too.

My top two would be Watson and Larry Brown. Watson was just such a physical freak, he could catch and had speed and also was a very physical blocker. I remember Brown being a little more of a blocker than guys like Pope and Johnson, but he could still haul it in for us too.

UGA has had some greats at this position over the past 20 years.

Jax Dawg:

I agree about Evans. I think that he and remarcus are coming along nicely and with Oliver, and Asher Allen, we should be very good and deep at corner.

I don’t know if I agree that we have a lot of “depth” at LB especially if Brandon Miller makes the move to DE. I think there is sufficient depth, but a couple of injuries at this position would really hurt us.

I have not hear anything official about B Miller moving to DE. I have posted that I would love to see the staff try him there in the Spring. It just seems to be his natural position and he plays high at LB. It can’t hurt to try it.

Thanks for letting us all know that it is Brandon who is not into changing to DE and that the coaches actually would like to see it.

I can apprecite his love of playing LB, but it seems to me that his best chance to get into the NFL and be a round 1-3 pick next year would be to make the move.

Will he even start at LB for UGA if he stays there? With Dewberry, Washintgon, and Ellerbe, it might be tough to crack the starting lineup at LB based on the way he played this year?

Of course, he might not be the DE that some of think he could be… and he could become a dominant force at LB, but Brandon: Listen to the coaches, give it a try, it worked out pretty well for a guy named David Pollack to switch to DE.

War Eagle and Hunk Erdown,

Do you remember Model’s 79 team called the Blue Streaks, I taught half that team how to play football when they were kids? They were pretty good as well winning the 79 State Championship. I was stationed in Okinawa from Aug 77 to Aug 80 so I never got to see Johnny Tutt or his brother and Larry Kinnebrew play but my oldest brother Robert lived down in East Rome at that time and he followed them and he kept me informed and I had a clip out of the paper(Rome News)that he had sent me when they won the State Championship. East Rome had this TB when I was a freshman, I can’t remember his name that went to Chatanooga and then played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was something else as well, he was big, strong and fast. He was like a raging bull. As for Billy Atkins doesn’t ring a bell. Hunk Erdown where did you play as your post was a little confusing was it Cedartown? We played Cedartown in a spring jamboree in 72 at Darlington and tied them 0-0, but we beat Darlington 14-0 in our other quarter. We were a big team averaging 6’2” 230 lbs on the OL and DL and they were just as big. War Eagle do you rember Branch Brag down at Coosa, him and Coach Tuggle were very close friends?

Buck,

I spoke to Dave Johnson he wouldn’t talk about the OL Coaching position, matter of fact was a little angry that I brought it up again. Hugh was in a very good mood after the Cotton Bowl win said he hasn’t been approached about the job so War Eagle could be right but did say he is interested. Coach Richt is being very cautious and deliberate about picking our next OL Coach. Did you see the recruiting news, The AJC report on Heyward insinuated that he had eliminated GA from consideration as they left out GA as one of his finalists. Now as for Brandon Miller moving to DE IMO it won’t happen as Kiante Tripp and Jarius Wynn from what I hear will make us forget about Charles Johnson and Quintin Moses. Tripp is being compared to Jevon Kearse and Wynn to Richard Seymour. IMO Brandon would be a better fit at DT.

Big Dawg:

I hope your right about Kiante and Jarius, but comparing anyone to Seymore and Kearse at this stage is a lot to live up to. I hope they do, but remember Matt Storm from Walla Walla Washington. We all thought he was going to come from Juco and plug right in to shore up a very weak D-line and he was a disaster.

Until they play at the D-1 level, I’ll just keep my fingers crossed, but I HOPE your right!

Johnson going to the NFL should give us a better chance to land Allen Bailey. Our coaches can truly tell him that we lost both our DE’s to the NFL and that it is going to be wide open for him if he wants it bad enough and wins the job. He will get every opportunity to start and/or a play a bunch next year if he comes to Athens.

I played at Haralson County, graduated in ‘78. The Tutt boys didn’t really excell til the year or two after that. Elkins was the qb for E. Rome and if memory serves, he committed to UGA but I don’t think his grades held up.
