UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Dogs welcome Saban back
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sept. 22, 2007, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
That’s the date and place where the Georgia Bulldogs get to reacquaint themselves with their old friend Nick Saban. That was already going to be a tough game whether Mike Shula or Danny Devito was the Tide’s head coach because they have a lot of good players coming back from what was a very young team this season. Now with Wednesday’s news that ‘Bama has procured away Saban from the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, I’d say Georgia’s game in Tuscaloosa next year just got a whole lot tougher.
Last time we checked, Georgia coach Mark Richt and Saban had a very competitive relationship and a pretty good rivalry going. While Saban was still at LSU, he and Richt had arguably the SEC’s top two programs, certainly for the first few years of the 21st century.
In 2003, the Bulldogs gave the Tigers all they could handle over in Baton Rouge but Billy Bennett had a rare off day — missing three field goals — and Georgia lost 17-10. Then LSU steamrolled the Dogs 34-13 in the SEC Championship Game at the Georgia Dome.
But the Dogs got some big-time redemption the last time they encountered a Saban-coached team. They absolutely dismantled LSU, 45-16, getting the game of his life from quarterback David Greene. (Georgia also beat the Tigers in the 2005 SEC title game but that squad was coached by Les Miles).
It just so happens that Georgia has the Crimson Tide on the schedule the next two years, with ‘Bama coming to Athens in 2008. But having Saban jump in there and get the Tide rolling again might not be a bad thing for the Bulldogs. Auburn, after all, has owned ‘Bama the last few years. Georgia has to play Alabama just twice every eight years while they play Auburn every year. Wouldn’t anything the Tide can do to blunt the Tigers success be somewhat helpful to Georgia’s cause?
How do y’all think Saban’s presence might impact Georgia, if at all? What about the SEC? Bet LSU fans aren’t too happy about this.
Meanwhile, I’ve attached Georgia’s schedule for next season. It’s a pretty good slate, with three straight home games – including a really tough but interesting opener against Okie State – and Auburn and Kentucky at home toward the end. Might as well start analyzing it now.
GEORGIA’S 2007 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
Sept. 01: Oklahoma State
Sept. 08: South Carolina
Sept. 15: Western Carolina
Sept. 22: at Alabama
Sept. 29: Ole Miss
Oct. 06: at Tennessee
Oct. 13: at Vanderbilt
Oct. 27: vs. Florida (J’ville)
Nov. 03: Troy
Nov. 10: Auburn
Nov. 17: Kentucky
Nov. 24: at Georgia Tech

I’ll have to admit I’m surprised —in a way. Then again, he’s shown before that he’ll pack-up & leave just about anywhere anytime. With that being said, I think ALA will improve, win more games & be more consistant. It’ll be interesting to see Saban travel to LSU in ‘08, though. And although he could bolt at ‘BAMA, too, with his age (54 I think) & him being one of, if not THE highest paid coach, maybe he’ll stick around. The only down side to hiring Saban is NO Coach has EVER WON two (2) National Championships at different schools. Could Saban be the 1st?? We’ll see.

Oh boy! The tide will be tough once again. But Saban has itchy feet so I would not be too comfortable as a Bama fan for long term. The Sec just got even tougher though that is a fact! Too bad The Vols seem to forget how to play football for the bowl games. They hurt the Sec.

Jeff - its true that Saban has itchy feet, but I don’t think that another team will want to buy out his 40 million dollar contract. What will be interesting is if Jimbo Fisher follows him to Bama. Rumor is that Jimbo and Les Miles don’t see eye to eye. On the other hand I’ve heard that Saban is hard to work for.
One more thing about contracts - ND did the same thing with Charlie Weiss by giving him 10 year contract to keep him from going back to the NFL. Its hard for a coach to turn down gauranteed money for an extended period of time.

ROLL TIDE!
THE CRIMSON TIDE WILL WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE UGAY WINS ANOTHER SEC CHAMPIONSHIP BECAUSE BAMA DEFINES ITSELF BY NATIONAL TITLES WHEREAS THE PERPETUALLY MEDIOCRE UGAY DEFINES ITSELF BY THE QUEST FOR THE SEC TITLE, SOMETHING THEY HAVE ONLY WON TWICE IN THE LAST 25 YEARS.

can’t wait for next year’s matchup with BAMA… should be an intriguing matchup between two of the top young qb’s in the nation.
looks like several key matchups will be on the road… should be a tough year as usual…. can’t wait!
i dont’ think saban’s return directly helps/hurts georgia. the only problem georgia now has is the recruiting wars are only going to get more intense as bama now has a real head coach and spurrier continues to roll them into columbia. add that to the success of auburn, florida and lsu… with georgia tech, miami and florida state all invading georgia… it’s going to start getting REAL tough to get the majority of players we want… like we have enjoyed the last few years.

Aren’t we glad that MR decided to go recruiting nation wide? He’s going to have to do more of that. All of the schools are. Let’s see, we should have New Jersey, Texas, Ca. and maybe Misszou, unless we “Shirt” both of them. Am I missing someone from outside the deep South? We’ll need a few more. Yes sir! I’m glad our “HC” got a jump start for the Dawgs!!

Face it Bama, you’re a has-been. Nick Saban may coach you up beyond your long-time mediocrity but you will never again be the national juggernaut you once were. There is too much talent and good coaching at almost every school now for you to dominate. If you give Saban time, I’m sure he will do good things but the controllers (boosters) for the Tide have proven their impatience and shortsightedness time and time again. Will they learn this time or will Saban be ousted in a few years, either way you will never clean house in the SEC again.

The Man: Grow up. What a weinie. The SEC is a GREAT conference. It was inevitable Alabama would get a good coach. I love UGA AND college football. It is entertaining and a nice diversion - Boise State/Oklahoma was one of the best games I have ever seen (personal favorite was UGA/Fl in Gator Bowl in 1980, in person). Some of you people really, really need to get a life.

Saban has always been one of my favorite non-Richt coaches and I welcome his return to the SEC. It is great for the whole conference. He is a great coach and a big name. Who knows what it will mean for Georgia next year. We’ll just have to play the game to find out.

Nick Saban will have the Tide at least as strong as his LSU program, maybe stronger. But, much like Lou Saban, he moves around a lot and the grass will be greener somewhere eventually. To my Tide friends, enjoy it while you can. You got a good one. Now, as far as Georgia being affected, I don’t think things change much. Richt has Georgia on track to be the SEC champ two out of every four years now and I don’t believe that will slip. And, they are going to start beating Florida again sooner than later.

Nick the Nomad. I give him three years before he bolts for the next great job. What’s so funny is that his contact (amount, length, and guarantee) is hard evidence of their desperation. And Bammers are okay with Saban’s unprofessional “slip-away in the night without telling his staff” because Franchione did it to them….what a joke! Bama may win a few more games but the fanbase will always be losers.

Saban hired a lot of UGA players at LSU and took them with him to the Dolphins. I expect that the usual crowd (less Derek Dooley) will show up at Bama.
Recruiting. The experts are surely right that Saban won’t alter recruiting too much this year but will next year. The prediction was that Saban ‘might’ steal a recruit or 2 in 2007. I have to think that Bama will recruit effectively against Auburn, Florida and LSU in 2008, and may steal a few out of Georgia. Overall, I see Bama recruiting mostly at the expense of the SEC West. As Bill Curry loves to point out, Alabama is smaller than Atlanta.
SEC games. If Bama improves, it makes the SEC even more of a meatgrinder. I still think Les Miles is underperforming at LSU. Arkansas’ future is unpredictable. Bama will be better that the 2 MS teams. Bama will target Auburn, and that will be where Bama fans measure Saban’s success.
Bowl Games. Maybe Bama can win one with Saban. The SEC had 9 bowl temas this year. The SEC’s bowl record is the measure of the conference (thank you Vols for stinking it up). Bama should be able to upgrade.
Current talent level. Isn’t Prothro due back in 2007? Doesn’t Bama have some experienced players returning.
UGA’s Schedule
Honestly, it looks easy (as I thought the 2006 schedule looked). I’m not sure which looks tougher at this point: Bama or South Carolina. Hoefully, UGA will be hungry in 2007, and Stafford will improve.

That is probably the funniest thing I have ever read….what’s even sadder is most UGA fans still believe this. Just like when you claimed you would beat Zook or that Urban Meyer was a myth. Urban is outrecruiting CMR and has definitely outcoached him. As long as Urban Meyer is in Gainesville UGA will be playing for 2nd in the East or like this season 4th. In fact has UGA ever won the East without relying on another team to beat UF? NO!
I do want to point out that I do believe CMR is a fine coach and I think Matt Stafford if a great QB however UGA is going to be severely held back from competing for any titles until you find 3-5 Wide Recievers worth a darn. This won’t happen over night or with one recruiting class. I think UGA set a college football record for drops this season.

All I can say by looking at that schedule is that payback is going to be a *itch for all of GA’s opponents next year! Stafford is a year older and with some consistency in the running game the Dogs will be back in the thick of it. Stafford had to go through some growing pains but he will emerge as a threat in the SEC. Having a week off before Florida will give this team the mental rest needed to put a beat down on the overrated Tebow. All they have to do is avoid the slip up on the Volunteer state road swing and they’ll be playing for more than just a trip to the GA Dome in 2007!

The one difference is that at LSU Saban had the pick of recruits in a very good state for high school football. There was no real in state competition for those recruits. In Alabama the talent is divided between two schools. In sum, recruiting was easier at LSU than it will be at Alabama. Further, how patient will the ‘Bama folk be if results aren’t seen right away? I’m sure they are going to want to see something for their money.

alabama does not have the talent that louisiana has and alabama has to split that talent with auburn so i think it will be hard for saban to turn it around like he did in lsu.

Amen BAMA BAMA BAMA. UGA’s chances of any shot at a national title have now just about been eliminated. Saban spells Bad News for Athens and just another nail in the mediocre coffin for the Dawg Fans.
After getting drilled by UF, UT, KY and Vandy, now Saban is back. This is sort of like WWII and the two front syndrome with Spurrier on one side and Saban on the other. The great commanders that they are, Saban and Spurrier, will crush the dogs, and CMR will be off to Tallahassee to get back to that weak ACC.
It just gets better everyday for them Athens folks.
Roll Tide! By the way, UGA does not even come close to the number of titles held by Alabama. God help UGA.

Bobo? the winning QB against Florida Bobo, is that you???- Actually UGA is at home licking their chops… and you grade a program by it’s history as well as it’s last report card. We win on history and overall record against Florida which means overall UGA is a better program… More recently (yes, in this series 10-15 years is recent) Florida has the edge…

Big Al - Take a pill and calm down. While you’re at it, take a reality check too and take a step into the 21st century. Over the past 6 years, UGA 61 wins are topped by only 5 other teams (hmmm, Bama doesn’t seem to be on the list). But keep talking about all your Bear Bryant titles… See you in September.

The effect of hiring Saban will bring Alabama back up with the top teams in the SEC West. It may weaken Auburn a little but not significantly. I see a decline at LSU under Miles with the potential of losing his big name assistants to other coaching jobs. Arkansas will continue to be a one out of every four year threat in the West. If anything it will prevent one program such as Auburn or LSU from becoming a dominant force in the division (i.e. Florida in the East in the nineties.)
The LSU-Alabama rivalry just got stepped up a notch, much like Florida-South Carolina. Although, I do not think that Saban will get the warm welcome that Spurrier received in Gainesville when he returns to Baton Rouge for the first time.
If anything the effect is that it will become even more difficult for an SEC school to go undefeated and play for the National Title.
Just a little sidebar…. What other conference can even come close in terms of depth of head coaches?
(In no particular order… Richt, Spurrier, Meyer, Tuberville, Fulmer, Saban, Miles & Nutt)

Bama, it’s a fact that right now Bama is inferior to UGA, UT, Auburn, UF, LSU, Arkansas … should I go on? I think Saban will make Bama a strong program, even a national power again. But you’re going to have to stand in line, pal, because you ain’t there yet and other than UT, and maybe LSU, those other programs don’t seem likely to backslide much.

Meyer has hardly outcoached Mark Richt in the two meetings. In their first meeting Meyer benefitted from the fact that D.J. Shockley could not play. The second meeting was gift wrapped by Lumpkin’s fumble at the goal line. He also benefitted from a blown facemask call in the fourth quarter.
I would hardly say that he outcoached Mark Richt in either year.
And lets not forget that in both years, Meyer had an extra week to prepare. That will change in 2007.

They were generously awarded a mythical dual championship with So Cal—who they didn’t play—but, as we all know, So Cal ran the table the next year of the undisputed Championship so obviously they were the real Champion in 2003 also.

SOS came back to the SEC and ran smack into a different kind of Dawg. Two in a row and in ‘06 with a true freshman at QB. Saban? WE’re 2-2 or 1-2 so we can beat him and the SEC teams better be hoping against all hope that we don’t have receivers that hold on to the ball, because if that happens, Dawgs will win the SEC ‘07. Matthew Stafford will be ALL-SEC QB.

Then you made the trip over to Athens and lost. Saban will turn the team and the recruiting around and know doubt he will get you guys back in the national spotlight but seriously the first time he has a down season he will be sitting next to Mike Shula in the we will never replace BEAR Bryant part of your University. Geez, Matt Fatford, Saban’s hiring puffs you up a little, huh? Good to see the Bama fans feeling a little better about themselves… . However, not to appear an apologist for Georgia or anything, but those losses to Vanderbilt and Kentucky might not be quite as awful as they appear. I mean Kentucky won eight games this year, which was two more than Alabama. And I think it’s safe to say the Dogs probably beat both the ‘Cats and Vandy if they have place-kicker Brandon Coutu. Meanwhile, Bama’s lost a bunch of bad games the past few years. I expect Saban will do well at Bama but shouldn’t he win at least one game before the gloating begins.

Matt Fatford- First off I hate even typing that. It sounds so stupid. But I guess I shouldnt be to suprised coming from a BAMMER fan. I will address your foolish comments in a minute. First off my friend do not laugh to hard about Vandy. See my friend we only lost to Vandy and Kentucky twice in the same season for the first time since 1973. We lost to Vandy for the first time since the Donnan era. Granted it takes away some of our credabitly in the mighty SEC East but I think we re-bounded very well. I mean going to the Peach Bowl as opposed to the “We are the bottom of the Barrel ” bowl that you went to was a decent way to rebound from those losses. I loved how BAMMER rebounded after the Auburn loss. To loss to the mighty okstate.
Yeah your right about Champ Bailey not having much of a college career. Yeah and Hines Ward was garbage to right? Seems like BAMMER has had a lot to cheer about in the last five years. You think the BAMMER nation will make Saban put on that stupid hat? You guys live in the past more then us UGAY fans. UGAY? Have you been reading the insects blog sight? Jesus Freak CMR? Are you serious? But hey I can understand the need to cheat to win. Wasnt BAMMER on probation not to long ago. I mean who would ever want someone with integrity and class representing there school. I mean Price did such a wonderful job for you guys. Get a grip jackass. You act like they dug up the dead legend coach you school clings to and brought him back. I would be willing to bet that UGA will be in NC game before BAMMER. You can get past AUBURN or Tennesee or LSU or for that matter MISS State. Now your going to tell me that JON PACKER WILSON is better then Matthew Stafford? I mean seriously. You are an idiot if you think so. I mean Stafford after all did beat AUburn as a freshman. Again I go back to my comment earlier. WORRY ABOUT AUBURN. Then talk smack to UGA. Bear Byrant is DEAD move on. Seems to me BAMMER is defining itself here lately by firing coaches. And I guess finishing in the top 25 for the last ten years is Mediocre. I know most people in BAMMER will be excited for the next couple of days and we will see some dumbass post from them on the UGA blog. But you could go back to the Tech blog were you normally post and ask them how to be Auburn. SInce your team has now idea. Go DAWGS.

Yee-haw. Why dont they have a Bama blog on the AJC? WE would like to be able to type things bout our school to. I mean if you guys lived here in Alabama you would want to post on the AJC site as well. I mean we aint got anything over here but the agirculture school (HEE-HEE). Sorry just now responding. Yeah, that’s the word that’s circulating, that Saban’s wife didn’t like the NFL/Miami lifestyle (it can be pretty tough, you know, with all that money and warm weather and spa treatments and such. Tuscaloosa has much more to offer — sorry couldn’t resist the joke). I’m not sure I buy it anyway. Saban’s nomadic tendencies aside, I’m not sure the NFL just wasn’t too tough for him. I mean, Wayne Huzienga paid Saban an awful lot of money and bestowed him with absolute power to turn around his franchise. How does Saban reward him? By ducking out after two years without the job being even half done. Think about if you had hired a great painter to paint your house but less than halfway through he gets an offer to paint another house so he leaves (never mind that he’s simply not enjoying painting your house or your house is simply hard to pain). Meanwhile, he bald-faced lied to everybody in the world about his interest in the Bama job. From now on, Saban’s word is not worth much, in my opinion. I could see how it might be hard for some people to respect someone much that operates like that.

Georgia Bulldogs Number 24 in BCS Peter Wolfe Poll as of January 2, 2007
Alabama is Number 67.
Kentucky is also in the Top 25 at Number 25.
South Carolina is Number 27.
http://prwolfe.bol.ucla.edu/cfootball/ratings.htm
SEC has Won now 5 Bowl Games : Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina, and Auburn with Florida still to play.
Could be 6 Bowl Wins for the SEC this Bowl Season.
Alabama has been playing particularly easy schedules and has done particularly poorly against the Top 25 when they finally do play a Top 25 team like Auburn, like Georgia, and like LSU.
Now, jolly ole St. Nick Saban gave LSU quite a Christmas gift 2 years ago, and then after 9-7 and 6-10 seasons at Miami, 15-17, Alabama has to pay out $40 million dollars with bowl incentives to get Nick Saban to go to Bama with their yet next short timer to coach at Bama.
Slick Nick will take the next paycheck offered by whomever is next to offer it to him.
But, where is Bama?
http://uga.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?SID=878&Sport=1
Number 22 in Rivals Recruiting Bama
Florida is Number 2, Tennessee is Number 3, LSU is Number 5, Georgia is Number 7, South Carolina Number 9, Auburn Number 12, Ole Miss Number 14, and Alabama Number 22 for 8th place in the SEC.
Bama spends now every penny of one of their annual Football Revenue on this contract with the $22 million donations and $23 million ticket sales in a season. This is horrid for college football.
And, will it help Bama ?
Depends on how long Slick Nick stays at Bama doesn’t it?
Obviously, there is little Saban can do to help the recruiting at Bama this season, less than a month from signing date, and the players locked up already.
There are 7 SEC Teams Ranked in the Preseason Top 25 for next season 2007-2008 and Alabama is NOT one of the 7:
http://www.nationalchamps.net/2007/earlybird/index.htm
It is just not a pretty picture no matter how you slice it.
It has been a long long long long long time since Bama did a thing in college football beating top teams, but it would be a big plus to see Bama able to win a damn football game against Auburn.
Bama loses Kenneth Darby RB, Le’Ron McClain FB, Kyle Tatum OL, Jeremy Clark DT, Dominic Lee DT, Juwan Simpson LB, Terrence Jones LB, Ramzee Robinson CB, and Jeffrey Dukes Safety just of the starters.
Nick Saban becomes Bama’s 4th head coach in the last 4 seasons now, and yet another complete upheaval of every scheme offensively, defensively and in special teams.
This clearly then is NOT the panacea to all your problems.
Because we’ve ALL HEARD THAT 4 previous times in the last 4 years from Bama.
Good Luck on keeping Slick Nick there long enough to fix all this.

Yes, that was funny watching an SEC team beat a team who has NOT beaten a Ranked Team all this season nor all last season, and who has lost every bowl game that they have played now in a row back to January 2, 1995 which is now 9 Bowl Game losses in a row for Notre Dame with their losing bowl record all-time now of several games under .500.
Coach Richt is 2-2 vs. LSU, and that includes St. Slick Nick.
The SEC is defined by our wins over ranked opponents and we have now won 5 Bowl Games - the most Wins in the nation of any conference.
With one game left.
Note if you will how the Big 10 has been exposed.
Michigan was supposed to be great because they beat Notre Dame, who beat no one. Supposed to be in the Mythical Pick 2 National Championship Game as a result thereof, and could not even beat a team with 2 losses already and now Michigan finds 3 SEC Teams Florida LSU and Auburn all ranked higher than Michigan.
Where are the ACC fans now ? The ACC is 3-4 with a losing bowl record and 2 fewer wins in bowl games than the SEC.
Never mind the SEC has another bowl game to play, already ahead by 2 more wins than the ACC and the ACC is finished.
What is the highest Ranked ACC Team?
Trick question; there is NOT 1.
Is Boston College, who was Number 23 in the Polls before Bowl Season, the top ranked ACC team this year as the only 2 other ACC teams ranked at all in the polls were Virginia Tech and Weak Forest - both of whom lost their bowl games.
Penn State who was not ranked in the AP Poll nor in the USA Today’s Coaches’ Poll, beat not one ranked team all season long losing them all until they beat the vols of Tennessee.
Where are the loud-mouth vols’ fans in this blog now?
Tennessee vols, Texas and Nebraska came into this bowl season tied with the most bowl losses ever by any team at 21 bowl losses.
Tennessee lost again Nebraska lost again and now they are both tied again for the most bowl games lost by any team.
22 bowl losses.
Big 10 didn’t even have enough good teams to send to all their bowl tie-ins.
The Big 10 is 2-4 in bowl games this season, as the Big 10 is every bowl season, and even with a win in the MNC game, the Big 10 will end with a losing record of 3-4 while the SEC even if Florida were to lose, would end up 5-4 with a winning bowl record and the MOST WINS BY ANY CONFERENCE.
LSU’s 41-14 blowout of Biblical Proportions over Notre Dame last night does leave LSU at 62-16 to Coach Richt’s 61-17, but Coach Richt was ahead when Nick Saban was at LSU.
And, don’t forget that LSU did not even play the team that was Number 1 in both the AP Poll and the Coaches’ Poll before the so-called mythical pick 2 national championship game.
Les Miles has actually done better at LSU than Coach Richt has here in the same timeframe therefore.
But, not before Les Miles, was LSU better than Coach Richt in his tenure.
That was a crowing achievement by the SEC last night to blow out the overrated Notre Dame team that made every team that they have played all this season and all last season supposedly great because Notre Dame LOST to every ranked team they played all last season and now again all this season WITHOUT ANY SEMBLANCE OF A DEFENSE.
Brady Quinn. BS.
It was the SEC’s 5th Bowl Win this season, a total which no other conference can achieve.
And, it appears from early results that indeed **both South Carolina and Kentucky can make some of these Top 25 Polls for 2006-2007.
The SEC already has ranked teams in the only polls that matter, and are the only polls that ever are reported for any season, those at the end of the season :
Florida
LSU
Auburn
Arkansas
Georgia
Tennessee
6 we are certain are Final AP Poll teams, with both Kentucky and South Carolina garnering significant votes to be included themselves.
Don’t forget that Southern Cal ended up Number 1 in the most significant poll and Not Nick Saban of then LSU, the AP Poll which has had ONLY UGA ranked in the Final AP Poll for one solid entire complete Decade in a Row Consecutively now today.
Instead, Notre Dame is in the top 25 for beating not one ranked team all this season nor all last season.
That’s BS.
The Notre Dame loss plus the loss by Michigan exposed the Big 10 as a fraud conference. Florida beats Ohio State.
When there is another conference with 8 possible teams ranked in the final polls for a season, please let me know.

Bama fans are in for a shock!!!!!
Saban, is not a good ole boy, football coach - period. He will make the rounds, speaking to the boosters, will conclude booster meetings, with a comment like “from this point forward do not bother me-we have work to do”. Alabama fans will hate him, he is not “family”, and has no desire to be.
Reportedly, Saban’s wife hated Miami-move was lateral financially-per Max Howell.
By BuLLdawg
January 4, 2007 06:12 AM | Link to this
The move was not lateral financially but a raise in guaranteed and a raise in overall incentive clauses.
In fact, St. Slick Nick, would not have entertained Bama had they not given him for the guarantees not only for himself all the monies Bama takes in in a year in both donations ($23 million) and ticket sales (another $22 million), St. Slick Nick would not have entertained even announcing that Bama would have to pony up more for St. Slick Nick’s assistants than any other college program as well.
St. Slick Nick sold his soul for the monies, and will have that reputation despite your post to the contrary.
By BuLLdawg

And, St. Slick Nick will always have the NFL failure of a losing record with Miami in the real test of football coaches at the highest level that will offer him if he is successful at Bama (a program he has proven already he is not loyal to either, but cash), even more money to come back and do it right with a better franchise than Miami has been in recent years.
1st NFL to offer him more, goodbye to Bama.
Obviously.
He has proven that only cash matters.
He his wife, family, staff and friends knew Miami was not a good town.
The city of Tuscaloosa is better than Miami, and that only why he left Miami for Tuscaloosa Aladamnbama ?

Saban will definitely improve Bama on just about every level. He very well may have happy feet and a liar - let’s face it, he did the Dolphins wrong - but he’s a hell of a coach. (A guaranteed $40 mil. does speak volumes however.) How does it affect UGA? Who knows. Playing them twice every eight years doesn’t really afford much opportunity. Hopefully we’ll see them in the SEC championship a couple of times.
As for the schedule - I think it is great. It’s tough, as always, but at least we’re not playing 11 weeks without a break. The off week before fla, IMO, should be very, very helpful. Not only do we get another week to prepare - as fla seems to every year - but it splits the season up. 7 games before, 5 after. That’s much more manageable than the 11 straight we dealt with, as did other teams such as Auburn, last year.

**G8R H8R: always some sorry a* excuse coming from Athens about why UGA was defeated by UF.
UGA only has 1 National Title, and pales in serious comparison to Alabama’s record. Alabama’s last title is much more recent than the UGA title of 1980. In addition, UGA has not even been close to achieving a National title in 26 years, so UGA basically needs shut the F up.
We educated football fans do not need to hear about insignificant statistics about Won/Loss Records, Passing Percentages, Net Yards, etc. from those in Athens, who have the infamous reputation of being the dumbest D1 fans in the world.
Just how many titles have you won in the last 26 years? Correct: 1 lousy title with a squeaker over ND, then a loss to Penn State and Todd Blackledge the following year.
Your program is declining, and showing no signs of improvement. Until you can soundly beat UF and UT, you are dead in the water and have no bragging rights.
This is not a matter of whom I am for or against, but an educated observation of a program that is nothing but hot redbeck air about nothing. Stafford will be average or slightly above next year, but will never hold a candle to John David Booty, or Erik Ainge (who picked you apart like roadkill this year).
Your program is dead. Call it a day.

Good for you Bama! You ran off one of your own who was doing a great job after years of probation. What you did to Shula will come back to haunt you. Little Nicky’s word is as good as the money you put in front of him. Ask MSU, LSU, and the Fins.
What was he your first choice or your ninth choice? How much were you going to pay your 1-9 choices. Funny how even Joe Kines said he wouldn’t take the job. Good job pimping your program. Probably going to be new reality TV show on MTV PIMP MY PROGRAM!

For the record, the Saban’s lived in the Rio Vista section of Ft. Lauderdale; the Dolphins’ training facility is in Davie, a few miles west. Their interaction with “Miami” was minimal.
I think he figured out the team owner wasn’t going to spend what it takes to field a winning franchise and he bolted. Maybe he figured out coaching at the professional level truly sucks. Maybe he wanted to live in an area where English is the primary language, who knows. I wish him well.

The FACT IS!! you can recruit all the 4-5 star players you want. but can only put 11 on both sides of the ball in any given game!!! UGA recruits players who WANT to play for the Dawgs. Plus no one has had more long-term success with blue-chippers than the dawgs. Teams might get those 5 star recruits, but more times than not…those recruits cant compete at the next level. Saban will realize after year two that he might have gotten into a situation where the Bama faithful cant seem to forget the glory years of Tha Bear. Eventually Saban will end up, like he does each summer…back in the mtns of N. GA on Lake Burton. Even he knows which state is the best to live in!!!! So he cant be all that dumb!! LMAO

The way Saban left the Dolphins, in a wake of lies, should make potential Alabama recruits, their current players, and supporters very wary of him. No matter how Bama wants to spin it, they just handed a liar and a quitter $32 million guaranteed. Not very smart. If he can dupe the Dolphins, he can dupe Bama too.

Coaches salaries just got better as Bama has raised the bar. I bet Spurier would have jumped on that 40 million dollar deal. Dont think they offered anything close to some of the no names or less proven coaches though. Several coaches could have had their contracts bought out and gotten well over a million a year raise. Hope the Tide hasnt turned yet by the time the Dawgs travel to Ala. Speaking of the running game.. (earlier blogs) Dont some of you agree that our running game would be much better if we had a healthy, deep and unsuspended o-line. We are surrounding Stafford with studs on the o line and continuing to target some awesome receivers ie Troupe (if he doesnt play pro baseball) and AJ GREEN in 08. GREEN may be a USC type receiver and is flat out awesome. Troupe is the best in Ga. The passing game is going to open up the running game and the offense will improve. We will need that until we get more experience a D-end and our talented corners and linebackers get more experience. Happy New year to all Dawg fans from Amelia Island Mike and we are so proud of how the Dawgs fought back and won those last three tough games!!!

Well, looks like the SEC West will become an even more dominant force now in the conference. Good thing Spurrier is in the East. He will soon be coach of the Strongest team of the lot there on a regular basis and will balance things out a bit. Alabama went through some choppy waters for a while, but they will soon be back their their normal strengths. Actually, even with young Shula, they did not do so badly, especially when you check the games they lost and the difference in the scoring. It says here that, given another year, he probably would have had the Tide in its normal operating mode. Not to fret, Saban has a goldmine for recruiting in Alabama, and will not have to “raid” Georgia as was mentioned above. Plus his ties in Florida, Lousiana, and up north will pay dividends in the recruiting department. By the way, someone slipped in their writing (earlier) when they listed Georgia Tech, Miami, and some other schools raiding Georgia. Going along with that thinking or that “misthought”, it would be closer to the truth to speak of UGA raiding Atlanta. Just a mistype I know, but rather amusing. UGA had better cringe as they think about the big man in Tennessee retiring, and them getting a hotshot coach to take his place. Of course, they are mighty happy they only play Alabama twice in 8 years. Roll Tide!!

BuLL DAWG= 100% right. Whoever said that if Spurrier would have taken that money I believe is dead wrong. I can’t stand him as a coach because he use to beat us like a drum but he stuck by his word and said NO!! and meant it. Why anyone thinks the Dawgs are afraid of any team is beyond me. This season, the Dawgs were forged in fire. Lost some they should have won and would have if Coutu was healthy. Yet, they didn’t quit and finished the season the best way possible. So as we go through this long season in the desert waiting for kick off, I want all you nahoo’s to just keep on howlin, shouting and generaly making a butt of yourself. Then when we tee it up, your slilence is going to deafening.

gdawginkalamazoo- I agree with you. It’s really funny to see people grasping at straws to find something negative to say about UGA. Everytime these turds post it proves everything I think about their program, fans, athletes etc… There are a number of top-tier athletic programs out there (UGA being one of them) and it’s ironic that someone questioning intelligence/education doesn’t know how to identify one of the top athletic programs in the country…If win/loss records are insignificant and the only measure of success is how far a team goes in a year, tha UGA owns UF. If win/loss records do count, well UGA wins there also… Funny how educated people can’t figure that out…

Some UGA news!
Mark says he wants a coach hired by the end of the dead period. Mark was blown away about how many quality people including Brad Scott threw their name in the hat.
Folks Ga. has arrived! Coaches want in on what is going on in the UGA. I would not be surprised if B. Scott is announced the new o-line coach by this week end.
Apparently B. Miller did have some interest in going to the nfl. He is not to excited about putting his hand down but he really is a freak of nature with his 6’4 frame that can hold 270 and lose speed. I would love to see him put on some weight and let Fabris team him how to get it done.
The news on Stafon is quiet. But he did tell people he was interested in comming. The georgia staff is queit.
I hope we keep Greenlee. He is going to be a stud! Best OL in Ga. in a long time.

SEC West dominance? 15 titles and the East has won 10 of them. Alabama will be fortunate to pull in Alabama top recruits over Auburn. In LSU Saban had to basivally his pick of who he wanted. Periodically fighting Texas over some. Please he is a good coach, but do not bark up the wrong tree about dominance when you have year in year out top 10 teams in UT, UF and UGA. The west only has Auburn and LSU over the past 5 years that have been worth a lick.

BuLL, nice tweaking of the numbers. It’s alot easier to have five wins as a conference when you’ve played eight games, especially when one of those is against Houston. Bammer loses to a team with a losing conference record, AuBarn barely beats mediocre Nebraska and looked like they should have lost, and LSU gets the gift of the century by playing overrated ND(the reason they keep losing their bowl games is because they are not BCS caliber and the BCS keeps putting them in there.) Now, let’s go to the top. If the SEC is so good, their best should beat the other’s best, right? Well, #2 Ark loses to #3 Wisconsin, and #4 Vawls lose to #4 PSU. You should also bring up your kool aid drinking 9-0 conference prediction. And we haven’t even been to the best part: UF is getting mauled in just 4 days! That will put the SEC at 5-4 and the top at 0-3. After Cincinnati beats W. Michigan, the Big East is going to have the same number of wins and no losses. I guess to you that would make the Big East the best conference. I still think the SEC is the best, but it is definitely not at the top, or else an average team like UF wouldn’t be the champ. This year the best conference at the top is clearly the Big 10, the SEC has the best depth(5-12). 1-4 has already been proven heads up and will be reconfirmed on Monday night.

No bama fan can talk trash about Matt Stafford because he dominated Auburn with his hands and legs and all bama did was get the thumb. Keep dreaming bama; LSU, FLA, TENN, GA, AND AUB won’t let you win another NC. for whoever said Stafford will be average is a f’in moron and clearly doesn’t know what talent looks like. Give him receivers that don’t drop half of his passes and he’ll be a bada**. Three straight wins over ranked teams, 2 come from behind wins against two stellar defense’s and your trying to tell me that he is average? Stafford will be great

You heard it here first. Wit hthe o-line men we are bringing in we will land another top 5 qb soon. These aren’t just big bodies we are bringing in, they guys are some of the best inthe country. With King and Moreno running behind these guys 2 years from now and Staff throwing, the offense will be off the charts. N. Ward could be the best TE Ga. has ever had and that is big company. The #1 2008 TE has the dawgs as his favorite right now.
I don’t care if Pete Carrol comes to the sec. As long as we have CMR’s leadership we are fine!
It’s great to be a Dawg!
Buck, I’m seriuos about you comming for G-day. I will buy you any lunch you want in Athens. There are about 3 of us that go together every year to watch. There is nothing funner then seeing these kids up close then next year after DVH has gotten a hold of them they look like freaks of nature.
BTW, they say Bailey looks like he has already been in a college strength program for years he is so developed.

bama what in the hell guys. Most dawg fans will tell you that we’ve got nothin but love for you. I live out west and I explain to most folks that some of the best fans in the SEC are bama fans (auburn fans too) but holy crap guys. lets come back to reality, youve been irrelevant on a national scale for over a decade now. Why do you come out swingin for dawgnation when we have always been supportive of you in the past? Have some class, some respect for your revered Bear Bryant, and act like youve been there before. Yo’re all acting like florida fans, and we all know those guys dont represent the real SEC> Mostly dont prove me wrong when I say to my fellow westerners out here that your program deserves to be mentioned among the elite. Let your freakin superstar coach win a few games before you crown yourself the next national champion

The Georgia Bulldogs are the LUCKIEST football team ever, pee wee, high school, college, etc… on the face of the earth. Anybody who says different in a liar and a fool. (as well as a moron)The talent on team is greatly overshadowed by the luck the team has. But in their defense, I’d rather be lucky than good anyday.

Saban has a getaway cabin on beautiful Lake Burton GA adjacent to my late Dad’s former home. Back in the mid 1980’s I was up from Macon visiting my Dad. I was walking down the path to the dock to fish and ran into Fran Tarkenton watering the neighboring lawn. My Dad had neglected to tell me that ol’ Fran had bought the old guest cabin property next door. An old friend of mine who lives a few miles down the lake recently told me that Saban had bought that same property from Tarkenton. Saban was quoted in the AJC as saying that Lake Burton is his last stop after he leaves coaching at Bama AND “Deliverance” was filmed at Lake Burton AND that there are no football teams there. First,”Deliverance” was filmed on the Chattooga River 10 to 15 miles EAST of Lake Burton and if you cross the river you are in South Carolina. 2nd, THE University of Georgia is only 65 or 70 miles south of Lake Burton and Climpson College is 40-45 miles east. If Nick doesn’t believe he’s near a football team at Lake Burton, all he need do is take a leisurely summer boat ride and take notice of the numerous boatloads of affluent(albeit half-naked)people wearing Bulldawg ballcaps and visors sipping various beverages housed in UGA beer coozies. They will invariably yell out “HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!!” or (mockingly)”WAR EAGLE!” when they recognize him. If Saban doesn’t learn the ropes and get a better grasp of Tuscaloosa AL sooner than he has of Lake Burton GA, he’ll be run off and retired on Lake Burton GA much earlier than he wants to be. He’d best stay away from the Chattooga River too. The same clan of Climpson College fans from across the river who made Ned Beatty squeal like a pig in “Deliverance” might cross the river, pull his ear and make him say “ROLL TIDE!!

With the hiring of Saban, Bama will once again become the media darling of all sports broadcasters, Keith Jackson will come out of retirement to broadcast Bama’s games, and Kurt Herbstreit will grudingly give Bama a slim chance of beating his alma mater. WHY? Not because Bama is any better than it was 2 weeks ago, but because the media WANTS Bama back as a powerhouse and they’ll do everything possible to make it happen. Saban and Bama will be the major college football story for next season. ND will become so last year and Bama will become the newest heart throb of ESPN. Regardless of Bama’s ability next year, just like ND, Bama will be ranked in the top 5 or 10 preseason. Just like ND, Corso and Day et al. will try to convince the public that Bama really is as good as the hype they’ve given them. And just like ND, the bowl games will expose Bama for what they’re not.

I’d just like to say Congratulations to the Gators! They (and LSU, too) did the SEC proud with two 41-14 wins. I can’t think of two more deserving teams than Ohio State and Notre Dumb! (since USC got whipped by a Beaver) National Championships should be won 3 or 4 times a decade by an SEC team. I don’t know if Saban will increase that chance, or help beat ourselves up even more. I hope he likes houndstooth. HA!
