UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

The NFL beckons hopefuls
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There’s still a bowl game ahead but numerous things are taking place behind the scenes that are going to shape the way Georgia’s football team looks next season. Namely, at least three underclassmen are eyeing the NFL.
Everybody knew it was a possibility for DE Charles Johnson and CB Paul Oliver but tailback Danny Ware is the latest to add his name to the list. Nobody will know for sure until the second week of January what these young men will decide to do (that’s when they have to submit their paperwork to the NFL) but Georgia’s coaching staff is taking the possibility of losing all three very seriously and is recruiting accordingly.
None of these guys projects particularly high in the 2007 NFL draft according to draft expert Mel Kiper. He lists only senior Quentin Moses in the first round (23rd pick) as of today.
Ware’s is the most intriguing situation. There are already three junior tailbacks that are expected to declare for the draft that will be drafted ahead of him in Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson, Cal’s Marshawn Lynch and Fresno State’s Dwayne Wright. That’s not even taking into account Louisville’s Michael Bush.
Clearly Ware’s simply not a happy camper. His best buddy, fullback Des Williams, is not returning next season and Ware apparently feels like he may be the odd man out in what could be a five-man rotation at tailback next season. At the least, Georgia will have Kregg Lumpkin, Knowshon Moreno and Caleb King at the position. Thomas Brown has said he wants to return next year, even though he has a redshirt year that he could use to more fully recover from knee surgery. Whatever he decides could also be a consideration.
And don’t count out a transfer from Ware, who also has a redshirt year in his pocket. I don’t think it’d necessarily be a wise move but it definitely could happen.
Neither Johnson nor Oliver project to be first-round picks but both are viable pro prospects who would likely go in the early rounds and make an NFL roster. Oliver definitely helped his stock with his performance against Calvin Johnson (projected No. 2 pick) in the season finale. If I was a betting man, I’d say there’s a good chance Johnson may make the leap. Not as sure about Oliver’s situation but I could see it happening.
Forgetting allegiances to Georgia, what do you think these guys should do? And how would their possible departures affect the Bulldogs next year?
That’s all for now. I’m off to Georgia’s basketball practice to find out whether Sundiata Gaines will be ready for tomorrow night’s tilt at Clemson. If he’s not, the Bulldogs could be in for another long night.

probably makes sense for Ware and C. Johnson not so sure about oliver as long as ware understands he may not get drafted at all-Chris Clemons was a guy from UGA who left with no prospect of getting drafted and made the redskins as a walk on-he was competing for a starting position this year (his thrid) and was abrubtly cut fell off the face of the earth was surprised no picked him up-its a risky move for ware but could be for the best particularly if it becomes an attitude issue next year

Don’t think C. Johnson should go, just due to the depth at DE in this draft. He would be a first day, possibly first round, pick next year (as opposed to a second day pick this year) - a difference in several hundreds of thousands of dollars. Same situation for Oliver, though not quite as sure about the depth of corners in this draft. Surely his stock would be raised by another year.
The Ware situation is an interesting one, and I feel his pain. It’s kinda a “lose-lose” situation for him. Better to be on the practice squad of an NFL team than to ride the bench at UGA? A lot depends on Brown coming back (I have said repeatedly I hope - and think he should - redshirts) and King getting into UGA (lots of rumors of Hargrave for him).

I don’t think Ware will get drafted very high, or at all, but if I were him I’d probably go now. What stock he does have could drop if he waits until next year.

Lumpkin will be the man next year. I am a little concerned if Ware leaves, King can’t enroll and Brown not healed. Could be in some trouble at RB.

Danny Ware you may go to the NFL and become another William Andrews or Terrell Davis. Scouts may project you that way, who knows at this point? You will be in a logjam in next year’s UGA backfield. My advice to you is ask to switch to receiver where you will start and shine. It will boost your draft stock and position you to be seen as a talented, versatile Hines Ward type.

As I’ve said here before, Kregg Lumpkin is no Herschel Walker, but he could be another Rodney Hampton. I don’t believe Ware will see a lot of carries next year. However, if he were to switch to flanker, he could possibly be another Anthony Arnold, which may get him into the NFL, especially with Stafford throwing to him.

Tim, you’re right, it’s that lose/lose type of deal. No one knows what his situation at Ga. is but if he was going to make a mark he had the chance this season when Brown went down. If he couldn’t do it under those circunstances then I don’t think he ever will with the DAWGS. Chip, I’m not so certain that he shouldn’t transfer but what ever he does I wish him well and I’m glad I don’t have such a judgement call to make.

Knowshon (sp?) Moreno has generated a lot of buzz. I think it would be an ok move for Ware to go on- he may also just be tired of school. It happens. Theres usually a place in the league for a physical football player with good speed and a good college pedigree.

ya i think it’s in danny’s best interest to either transfer or declare for the draft. there’s no way he cracks next year’s rotation. i actually hope brown takes that medical redshirt and caleb goes to hargrave .. which would leave a two back rotation of lump and knoshown.
as for oliver.. i think he has some people giving him some bad advice after his performance against CJ. oliver is a helluva corner but that “shut-out” performance was against a receiver who didn’t have a capable qb throwing to him. there were a couple of times when cj had paul beat but the throw was way off. he should definitely stay for another year honing his skills. i think he could be a legitimate 2nd rounder if he stays another year.
charles johnson i think has all the talent and ability to leave early. i think he’s going to be a monster in the pro’s and if he feels like a senior year is too risky.. i say go for it! even though i’d love to see him back for another year……

Is Reggie Ball the projected number one pick? If I were a team, I would have tried to go 0-16 this year so I could draft Ball #1. He’s a true impact player that always has a big hand in determining who wins his team’s games. That’s just my two cents.
Ware should transfer if he thinks he won’t be able to make it at UGA next year. He’s just not polished enough to be an NFL back. He’s a little slow and has fumbilitis.
Charles Johnson probably can make it in the NFL if he makes the jump. I hear that Oliver isn’t the brightest in the world, so he may have a Vince Young-like wonderlic score.

If we’re focused on what is in the best interest of the players, I think they should all go.
Not sure Johnson’s or Oliver’s stock will get any higher. Martinez’ more conservative zone defense scheme doesn’t benefit either of these players. Under VanGorder’s more aggressive scheme, the strengths of both of these players would’ve really shone through. As it is, we don’t blitz enough (limiting Johnson’s effectiveness in getting to the QB), and more often than not we drop back in zone (limiting Oliver’s effectiveness; he’s a physical, jam ‘em at the line type of guy).
Long story short, will staying another year really benefit these players? I’m not saying Martinez’ scheme is bad, but it just isn’t the best system for these players. And if they don’t do anything special out on the field next year, their stock will drop.
As for Ware, he needs to go. He’s a good back, really, and just a victim of poor circumstances. I could see him doing well at the combine and elevating himself to a first day pick.

Question: was I th only one who noticed what Reggie Brown said when he named his school on “MNF”?” He mentioned his HS> and not Ga. Anyone know what that’s all about? It is funny that with the Eagles he’s turned into an All-Pro type receiver and at Georgia he either dropped to many passes or didn’t throw enough blocks to keep the coaches happy. Wonder if any of our coaches have talked to anyone at Philly and tried to find out why?

Ware needs to go somewhere He is the odd man out Of that I have no doubt
So much for my Dr. Seuss attempts, the other guys do not lead to linguistic rhymes.
Johnson could make the bigger impact. Oliver needs to stay one more year. No matter what he thinks he did to Calvin, he did not have an NFL QB throwing passes down his throat. If he goes, I predict he will not be drafted and the best chance will be for someone to give him a training camp shot. There they will stick him on the scout team, until the cut margin does him in. Sad ending that I would not rather see.
Ware could be a Patrick Pass.
Johnson will be a Charles Grant.

Ware will get drafted in the 7th or a free agent. I see his point of testing the water. His stock will not improve any after next season. I think he should go. The Broncos will pick him up. They seemed to like Georgia players and Patriots too. And he’s perfect for their system.
Johnson/Oliver should stay. They have better chance of improving their stock. Personally, I rather have Oliver back than Johnson, if I have to pick one of the two. Corner is the toughest position to play in any level, aside from QB. We need Oliver to help mold our young DBs along. I hope they both decides to ride another year.

The reason it caught my attention about Brown was because L. Coles( can’t spell his 1st name) WR. with the Jets went to FSU. But when he’s anounced he says Ribault High School of Jax fl., where I grew up. He does it because Bowden kicked him off the team and didn’t kick Peter Warrick off when ther were caught stealing just before the NC. game with Va. Tech. so I just wondered if something had happened between the DAWGS and Brown. Sautee Dawg, I’m coming right along and I’ve noticd that Hines doesn’t spend much time coming back to Athens either.

Buck, Reggie is from Carrollton HS, same high school I am alumus. The Trojans were headed into state playoffs and Reggie wanted to give them a boost. I thought it was a great for team moral, although they lost in the third round to Shaw HS.There are several players who announce their high school instead of college on MNF.In 2005. CMR and Reggie came to help with the Booster Club auction and raise $80,000 to sent team to camp and other expensives. Coach Tuberville and Coach Muschamp came this past year,2006. and raise $92,000. West Georgia is Auburn country except Nick Jones(Bowdon)and Shackford(Villa Rica) which we missed..

I don’t think it’s anything intentional by Reggie Brown or any other players. It’s like a “fad” or virus. You know, if it sounds cool or looks cool, then it’s cool to do it. They’ll start mentioning their middle or elementary school next. I noticed everybody copied the “jump shot” in the NFL. I also, noticed few kids wearing zip code on their face.. coping Reggie Bush.
Yeah I’m cool too.. with my laptop.. NOT, I ain’t got one.

I have a hunch Ware is gone even if he knows the best he can do is free agency. He is injury prone and tends to fumble so he has nothing to gain by being a part-timer in 07. Johnson is likely going too. Oliver needs to stay. He’s only been a full-time starter for one season at a very tough position. If Brown is willing the decision on a redshirt could be made after 4-5 games. I’m not sure why it would have to be decided in August if he is not quite 100%. He could hit the field fully ready and fresh in mid-season with a lot of football still left to be played.

Buck, your question is did any of the georgia football coaches the week before the bowl game get involved in finding out why a player from UGA 3 years ago choose to say his high school in an NFL pregame promo?????? really???? you wonder about that?
plenty of NFL guys do that on occation, RE: Ward SuperBowl.
BTW: Brown was All SEC and holds a few records, one of UGA top 3 rec ever and his numbers dramatically went up every year he played here. Why on earth would you think he didnt have a “coach freindly” career? I particularly remember coach braggin on his clutch performances, his brutal work ethic, and his attitude.

How was your Christmas? So you played at Carrolton High School. We played Carrolton in the first round of the playoffs in 1972, I remember they were supposed to play us on our home field but some strings got pulled and we had to go there. I have never been as miserably cold as I was that night as it was around 12 degrees F, Air Temp., and below zero wind chill. We lost to Coach Charley Grisham’s team. They had a running back named Eddie Crowder that ran the hundred in 9.1 or 9.2 I think and he returned a kickoff and punt for TD’s against us. The kickoff broke our backs as we had gotten back into the game by scoring a TD and then he returned the kickoff for a TD just before the half.
Our offensive and defensive lines averaged 6’2” 225 lbs. that year and their’s made us look like midgets. They had this defensive tackle who was listed in the program at 6’10” 350 lbs. and he was. I had to block him and I can tell you I couldn’t move him other than turn him. He didn’t make any tackles but he kept me from getting to the linebackers. They ran the Norte Dame box on offense and that was something to behold as well. I had a pretty good game on offense and defense even though we lost. I had 12 tackles with 2 sacks and 3 others for losses that night. Our best offensive player was our QB, ironically his name was Harold Crowder, no relation to Eddie, and he was very quick, fast and a scrambler so they had their defensive ends on a hard rush on every down staying to the outside to keep him from getting outside.

IMO Ware should go as I don’t think him staying another year at Georgia will make a difference in where he will be drafted. As for Johnson and Oliver I believe they should stay as their stock will go higher. The only thing they have to weigh is the possibility of getting hurt vs. where they might be drafted if they leave early.

Some one asked about what to expect in the way of new plays or different style with Bobo being the “OC”? If you happwn to warch rhe last half of tyhe FSU game, you got a whiff of what I think we’ll see more og. The QB throw back pass to the RB who threw back to the QB who then threw the T.D. pass. That was an agressive style of play and we’ll see more of it from Bobo and his side kick Stafford. I think Staffords going to the SEC championship game just to see and feel what “DOME” play was like, when he didn’t know we’d be in a bowl game there this season was a great break.

Buck, I’m not sure about that play. At the time, FSU couldn’t mustard any rhythm on offense. They were lacking execution on both sides of the ball. It was more like they needed a spark to light a fire under those players to get something going. It worked, seems like. But, I don’t see Bobo calling those type of plays. I’m sure he has it in his playbook. I just can’t see it, at least in my opinionation anyway. Actually, I think Bobo will call more running plays and try to stick with the running game when it’s clicking… I recalled one game him and Robert Edwards played in. Edwards suggested to pass the ball, and Bobo said, “no we’re running down their throat”. I think it was the Auburn game. We came back and won the game on Edwards run. I dunno, we can all agree or disagree. I wish you well on your recovery. Take it easy on the keyboard.

I believe Ware will try for the NFL, even though he most likely will not be drafted and may be picked up in free agency. Its obvious that he wants more playing time at GA and probably won’t get it because of our talent coming in and Lumpkin being around another year. However, if he leaves, i really think GA needs to do their best at picking up recruit Lennon Creer out of Tatum, Tx. He is one of the best running back prospects available and has UGA on his list of schools. He is very comparable to Ware size wise and has better speed. He would be a nice addition to the UGA backfield and give the rest of the SEC one more threat to worry about.

Just wanted to know who was comming around athens more now, since you personally “noticed” Hines Wards wasnt. And dont even try to tell you you werent trying to make some correllation between that and him having some riff with UGA because he mentioned his home town. Thats not a simple question, its an insinuation. Thats every bit as bad as when Carter used to say stuff like that. So NOO not trying to drum up some story, just knew about that one guy, and even though there is absolutely no issues whatsoever with reggie Brown gettig kicked off the team or any other shread of evidence they were remotely related, you just thought it was a legitamate question to ask? (and then go on to totally fabricate that Reggie wasn’t in good graces with his coaches during his days at UGA) Also, Because one guy from FSU had some issues, the UGA staff needs to get on it and go to the coaching staff of an NFL team to see what the problem is if any of thier former players ever mention a hometown?

If Ware was good enough to get drafted by the NFL then he would not have a problem with getting enough playing time at UGA. Fact is though he may not be as good as he likes to think he is and his entire future is on the line. He needs to work harder and come back and try to be the best he can then go to the NFL as a winner.

Very informative post about the O-Line and Johnson.
The one thing that concerns me is those bench press numbers for guys who are either going to start or play a lot, they look a little low.
I believe that we have more success when our lineman bench close to 400 each as opposed to 300 to 350.
I-Dog if you look at the numbers you will note they also have a figure listed for the number of repetitions at the various weights i.e. 350lbs. & 20 reps which means he can bench press 350 lbs. 20 times. This guys max bench press probably would be around 400lbs.

Model, no I didn’t I got a letter from them but they never spoke to me as they were talking to a couple of other guys on the team that were taller and heavier than me as I was only 6’0” 235lbs then. I was asked about going to Bama as a preferred walk-on which I told them I wasn’t interested. GA offered me a scholarship as an after thought when our head coach, Ralph Tuggle who had played for and was an assistant to Butts called Dooley and asked him to give me a look. The funny thing about all this is our center who was our second best interior lineman after me wound up at Mississippi State as he got no firm offers either and he was 6’4” 260lbs and ran the 40 in 4.8 or 4.9. Our QB who was out of this world as far as running ability and accuracy on the pass was only 5’10” and 155lbs. didn’t get any offers at all. It was a shame because he was a special talent as he could throw a football from goal line to goal line and he ran the 40 in 4.3 with pads on, plus he was our punter and place kicker. I think he couldn’t qualify academically as I seem to remember he took the SAT twice and still didn’t score above 750. I saw Harold last time I was home and he is now 6’2” and about 300lbs, like me he was a late blummer as I continued to grow until I was 22 years old when I had reached 6’3”.

Coach Grisham was a classy guy, as he came onto the bus after the game and spoke to us about the good year we had, that we should be proud of the way we had played his team tuff and wished is all good luck in the future. As it turned out ours was the closest game they had in the playoffs that year as they won the State Title again. By the way where did you coach at? We actually beat ourselves with penalties, mental lapses on special teams and unforced turnovers i.e. 3 fumbles inside their 5 yard line. We actually outgained them on the ground and through the air, had more first downs etc. They had more in return yards though and didn’t beat themselves.

I’m kinda suprised at how many people are saying Ware should leave. I do not think he should. The reason is, I simply dont think hes that good and I never have. He lacks that quickness it takes to really excell at tailback. All he has left is one more year and then guess what…..he has a degree. Thats the “true” reason they are here to begin with. After he gets that degree (for free) then he can go after any NFL aspirations and always have his education to fall back on if it doesnt work out. I wish every player the best of luck once their dawg career is over, and I will do the same for Ware if he does leave…..but I think its in his best interest to stay and finish up.

War Eagle
Coach Tuggle died quite a few years ago. Yes all those guys were around when I played. The QB on those teams was Bobby Jones who I think went to GA as well and became a Pharmacist. I went to school and graduated with Bobby’s daughter Pam and his brother Nevin was the principle the whole time I went there. Do you remember Earl Edwards one of the better linemen on those teams, he was a close friend of my father and my Uncle and was an assistant coach and head coach when I played Mites from 8-12 years old. You should apply for the Bama job you obviously are qualified. Couldn’t do any worse than Mike Shula or any of those other HC’s they have had there recently. When did you coach at West Rome and Bowden? Were you before or after Nick Hyder at WR? You know they closed WR and East Rome and created Rome High again. We tied Bowden at Bowden in 1972 to clinch the sub region that year. We beat them the following year 14-0 at Shannon. I was part of the last class to graduate from the old school as they didn’t finish the current school on time. It seems we have quite a bit in common. You know there is only one team in the SEC that I truly do not care for and that is Florida, even though I will be pulling for them against Ohio State. I only pull for them when they are playing Non-SEC teams. When we played them we beat them 3 out of 4 years and they were still talking trash. I remember after the games we would always shake hands with the other teams and say good game etc. but not with the Gators as they were very arrogant and no pleasantries were exchanged. Very poor sports as a whole. I will be watching Auburn and Nebraska as well and will be hollering for the War Eagles. Go Dawgs

Wareagle I will accept the position and promise to get Forrest Gump through school. Now if I could just get him to stop after kickoff returns. I am pulling for you guys but I think your team asserts the SEC dominance in the bowl game. War eagle!

the reason danny ware doesn’t make the rotation is because he has a terrible, terrible chip on his shoulder. i guess listening to des bad mouth night after night has taken it’s toll. remember danny a man is what he repeatedly does. connect the dots danny
