UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Rating Bobo’s work

I don’t know how many of you guys logged on to read my blog at the end of the Georgia Tech game, but you can imagine how surprised I was to find out Sunday that it was Mike Bobo who was actually calling plays Saturday night.

For those that didn’t -– there must be one or two -– I wrote about whether you were happy with Georgia’s play-calling against Tech, especially given the game-winning drive at the end. But I was also pointing out the Bulldogs’ lack of big-play production this season (keep in mind, my assignment was to file a blog as soon as the final buzzer sounded and, for a while there, it looked like Georgia might lose that game).

But I digress.

I wasn’t surprised that Mark Richt was willing to let Bobo call plays. It was just a matter of time before that torch was passed. I was surprised that Richt did it a week after calling a gem of a game at Auburn and then turning it over for the final and most important game of the season.

Could you imagine if this had been a major bust? What if Bobo had suffered a meltdown? That’s the main reason this was such a tightly guarded secret by Richt and his staff. As we’ve seen, Richt is fiercely loyal when it comes to his assistants. He didn’t want to see one of his brightest young coaches embarrassed. Fortunately for both of them, it turned out the way it did and Richt was able to unveil it for what it was.

It wasn’t hard to foresee Bobo assuming more responsibility of the offense. Like his buddies Will Muschamp and Kirby Smart, Bobo is the son of a coach and has been groomed his entire life for such a gig. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him become a head coach some day, maybe even at Georgia whenever Richt decides to hang up the whistle.

But while Richt sought to protect Bobo, he won’t be able to going forward. The reality is this: Like it or not, the fickle finger of blame will be pointed toward Bobo when things don’t go well on offense. As much success as Richt had at Florida State, he’ll be the first to tell you he wasn’t always Mr. Beloved. There was many a time when he became the target of criticism.

So Bobo might as well get used to it now.

What did you really think of the job he did Saturday? Georgia did, after all, manage only 15 points and 255 yards? Should Bobo get the job permanently? Is Bobo destined for greatness? Is he the next great head coach to come out of the SEC?

Considering this was the first time that Bobo called a whole game and was told Thursday that he was calling the game, he did okay. Most of the drives were stopped by a dumb penalty or a dropped pass in the first half. I think over time when he gets more comfortable, he maybe can get this thing rolling. I love the idea. Really hope it works out. By the way, the Dawgs just picked up a new OL commit in JUCO OL Joe Blaes from Coffeyville, Kansas.

i thought coach bobo called a good game.. fairly conservative… but the way the game was going, i think it was a shrewd decision…. minus the personal foul and false start against inman at very inopportune times and a few drops by receivers …. the georgia offense looked fairly efficient..

i really liked how coach bobo didn’t get away from the run… even though it wasn’t very effective.. ball control was one of the biggest keys in the win.

still have yet to hear anyone give any kudo’s to coach martinez… who i have been quite critical of… his defense has really stepped up the last two weeks….

paul oliver, jarvis jackson, martrez milner, mahommed massaquoi, mathew stafford… TREMENDOUS EFFORT! GREAT GAME!

Bobo will be a great play caller if the line blocks, the receivers catch, the QB is accurate, etc. With so much audibling is gameday play calling not a little overrated anyway? It seems to me plays are called before the game based on what the defense shows. Bobo has been in the press box and likely has had more involvement in play calling over the last 3-4 seasons than Richt will admit even now. Like you said, he is protective.

I hope he uses the talent we have coming in next year w/ what we already have and implement an aggressive, attacking game plan. With time I think Bobo can put together a good scheme.

He is a pretty fiesty, fiery personality, so I look for him to put it in the air, but at the same time stay focused on the run, where as Richt completely went away from it at times.

Good decision CMR. For all of those out there who were saying how stubborn CMR was maybe this tells us all that he is willing to adjust and do what it takes to get the DAWGS that NC we all so desperately want.

Frankly, I think Bobo did a better job than Richt. Richt seems to concentrate on what’s best for the QB.

Consider this, at the beginning of season, UGA’s backfield was featured as one of, if NOT tops in the nation. Look at the stats. Before the Tech game, Lumpkin was averaging over 5 yards per carry and STILL had under 800 yards rushing in 11 games. Why so low? Not enough carries!

With a Freshman QB just learning the system and a strong backfield, it just seems as though the run should have heavily dominated the offense removing pressure from the young QB.

The last drive against Tech was a well orchistrated drive with a good mix of run and short pass. Good call, Mike.

I agree on the defense comment and I, too, overlooked that in my previous posting. I questioned Coach Martinez’ ability to get the guys fired up. They had been playing with no fire.

In Auburn and GT, they looked started looking like that old junkyard dawg defense again.

For his first full game against a strong GT Judy Tenuta defense he did well. As mentioned above the stupid penalties and some of the dropped passes really crushed the drives the first half. The drive at the end was a thing of beauty. But Stafford with the fake on the first play of the game was sweet. Along with that pump fake on the TD play. Once the OL play gets stronger and more consistent I believe the run game will open up and the pass plays will be down field will be plenty. We need that possession recevier and a guy with the downfield break away speed. The speedsters I know we have. A true across the middle possession receiver I am not sure yet. I know MoMass caught some across the middle but I don’t think he can take to many licks doing that. Bobo is young and agressive so I think he will do fine. Plus he has been groomed by a young coach that has averaged 10 wins a season so far and has OC’d many more.

I think it was a great job by Bobo. Especially to stick with the run like he did. Lump and Ware ran 29 times combined. That’s a great stat, regardless of the amount of yards they ran for. Great job, Mike.

GW, I agree with you, its more about preparation and player execution, than who actually sends down the formation out of which 4 or 5 different versions of the play can unfold. I wold thihnk that those guys have been confering about the plays for qquite some time now. Also coach Bobo knows what he knows about calling plays from his mentor and only significant employer, so lets not start beleiveing this is some wave of offensive philosophy. I for one am glad its not. I’ll take the perecentages so far. I suspect next years team is going to make anyone look a lot better at playcalling.

honest abe:

I too have been critical of Martinez, but a few posters including myself have given him credit. 3 out of the past four games (all but KY) the Dawg D got the job done AND THEN SOME. I am still not completely sold, but this is the best his D has looked against good teams in his tenure.

You have to give Richt credit. An offensive coordinator and a OL Juco committment in the same week. It takes a big person to change from their previous strategy and these are two good moves.

I don’t think Richt would sign 2 JUCO’s (I believe Vance will sign) in the same year if he didn’t think NEXT year’s team was going to be special.

Blaez will likely back up both guard spots and play 2-3 series a game if he is good enough. If we can get Vance and Calloway brings them along, we can have a great year next year.

experienced depth at OL is really the only weakness on this team for next year looking ahead.

Keep in mind Richt told this after the positive outcome of the game. It could very well be possible Bobo called games earlier this year without positive outcomes. Sorry to sound like a conspiracy theorist.

I thought this day would come, it seemed to have been Richts plan all along. I was hoping we could bring in somebody from outside the program who would give us a fresh new look and combine it with Richts vanilla style.

The plays were very obviously the same and Im not sold on how well Richts offenses perform in general when not pitted against lesser opponents.

it looked like Stafford was real comforatble with Bobo calling the plays.I thinks its time for this change.I think Bobo will get fired up in certain situations ( like the FLA game ) and really let them light it up.I wish Bobo all the best-remember he was the only QB to beat FLA with coach superior.

Hey with Thursday, Friday to put together his on personel plan of attack he did well. This is the move I have wanted all season. Coach Bobo will excell at this position w/ the guidance of CMR. This is the step back Richt needed to make for us to win the National Title.

No conspiracy, I talked with the University this morning. Bobo has been calling plays in a few situations for the last couple of yrs. Sat. was a good example. In the past Bobo would call the plays when we needed a TD. to win. So before Tech. he would have called that last drive. I posted that the play calling was to conservative untill I heard, like everyone else, that Bobo called the game and then it made sense. If I had been in that situation, I would have been nervous and been conservative in play calling. The situation at Ga. is beiing set up the same way that Coach Bowden set it up for MR at FSU. Bobo will be the QB coach and call the plays from the box. I’m very happy because CB was an affressive QB when he played and I think he’ll be the same way calling plays. This offense will revolve around the play and talent of Stafford and that’ll be good for everybody. Stafford is good at getting the ball to the play makers plus he just happens to be one of the best himself. I tip my hat big time to CMR. a reslly positive step forward.

One more thing. With CB calling plays, I’m hopimg this may turn MR loose for more recruiting. We’ve lost some good players so far and we need to close hard and fast. Maybe a few more home visits by MR will close the deal. As of now, we’re a top 15-10 class and need those few more in the line in particular.

By honest_abe

November 27, 2006 06:20 PM | Link to this

i think most dawg fans aren’t expecting a drastic change in terms of the type of plays. it’s going to be the same scheme. but everyone is excited by the fact that now CMR can focus on the entire team throughout the week and on game day! i think it’s been fairly obvious the play calling has affected CMR’s ability to manage games .. and he pretty much said the same thing in today’s article.

i said earlier this year CMR was too stubborn….and that he put his own self interest before that of the program…. i apologize and if i could please let me take that statement back. heh

Looking to next year:

On the D we should be solid at Safety with 5 star Junior CJ Byrd, and senior K. Johnson backed by Q Banks and R. Jones who are RF Freshmen who have turned some heads in practice. RSo. D Baldwin gives more depth at either corner or safety where needed. We might move A. Coates to linebacker given his size, speed, tackling ability and the logjam at this position? (my guess here)

Overall, I think we are much stronger at this position. Harder hitting, deeper and more athletic.

Cornerback should be much improved, especially if P. Oliver comes back for his senior year. Senior T. Flowers will fight for playing time with talented R. So. B. Evans, Junior, R. Brown, and So. Asher Allen. RF P. Miller will be fighting to get playing time and I believe that every player will want to imporove this Spring to secure some PT in the fall.

The competition will help push this unit and it should be one of the best in the country. If Eric Berry signs with UGA, it may be the best secondary in the nation.

We lose all three LB’s and will greatly miss Tony Taylor. We might move B Miller to DE or at least try it in the Spring. I think that is a more natural position for him. If so, we likely start Juniors Ellerbe and Washington and Sophmore Dewberry. That leaves us relatively inexperienced at LB, but all three have played some snaps and the outside backers would be very athletic and fast.

They would likely be backed up by Hebron a speedy RF and A. Coates who obviously has speed if he moves from safety. I’d like to see us move the senior fullback D. Williams to middle linebacker (he played LB in high school) . RF A. Dent and Gamble would provide further depth if there is an injury or if Williams isn’t the anwer to backup at Middle LB. How many snaps will Williams get at FB if he stays? Why not let him play linebacker in the Spring and see how he does.

earlier in the year, we might be weaker here, but if Dewberry and Ellerbe can be consistant, we should get stronger as the year goes on.

Offenses should have a harder time bootlegging, throwing screens, and QB sneaking with Dewberry, Ellerbe, and Hebron chasing them down.

Moving Miller to DE gives us B Miller and C Johnson at DE, both Seniors. That is an oustanding combo. Senior M. Howard would back up in passing situations and Junior R. Battle can be used on running or passing downs. The rest of the playing time will be a fight between Lomax a R. So. and Woods a RF, both of whom have been injured.

Even losing Q Moses, I think this is a wash and we should be able to get decent pressure with our front 4.

In the middle, we lose two workhorses but return Ownens a Junior and Weston a R. So. Both are more talented than what we lose and should be ready to step up and own the middle of the D Line. G. Atkins has some experience as a Sophmore and we will need him to get bigger and stronger. We must stay healthy on the D-Line. Crawford, Trippe, Lemon, and Dobbs are all RF and we will need at least one to step up and play a little this year. If there are injuries, we will need this group to play even more. Will they be ready? Garner does a good job developing players and I think we will be all right here.

While the depth is a little scary Owens, Weston, and Atkins are a formidable trio in the middle.

There is enough talent, speed, size, and athleticism to please any D-coordinator and we should be tough on D.

Richt also went into some detail about how the game plan is developed and broken down.

Each coach covers a given aspect and develops the plan with comments and discussion with all of the coaches. Richt and the other coaches will still be doing this.

From these meetings a list is made of what plays will be called in certain downs and yardages and positions on the field. This determines practice reps.

So, in short not much will change. And that is good. I like the play caller being in the box. That perspective alone is good. Bobo is sharp and will do very well.

I’m sure Richt will still see things from the sideline and may make some calls when he feels strongly.

Richt-Bobo-Stafford together and on the same page sounds awesome! Damn why is next year so far off?

IDOG- Des Williams has played his last game for the dawgs. He will be missed. He did what the team needed in moving to FB. But his natural position should have been LB.

That new JUCO OL will contribute. The thing I like is that he was overlooked out of HS. That means he will not take this offer for granted. He will not think that he is entitled to this chance. He will be a blue collar, Pollack type that wants to work hard even if the credit goes to his skill position team mates.

We still need Vance, Wynn, Eric Berry and Allen Bailey to complete this class.

This will be a great class. GO DAWGS!

Coach Bobo is one of my favorite Dawg players of all time. The man did not know the meaning of the word quit. I cannot think of anyone else I would rather have calling the plays.

Remember when Stafford made his visit last year, he and Coach Bobo broke down game film that Sunday together. The team has been formed. It has been forged in the fire of adversity and finished as winners. I can only see greater things in the future. 277 days to go to opening day.

Several comments, kudos to CMR for delegating the play calling, Bobo will do fine with Richts tutoring. The receiving corp while improving still has to prove itself. CMR himself still has some growing to do in order to fulfill his potential, his clock management skills still need some work in the big games.

CWM? Have we forgotten our history lessons? We need a DC with some fire in their belly and the ability to to motivate the defense into a feeding frenzy, aka ERK! Remember last year? Down to Florida by 14 and never recovered. West Virginia? In 2006 unable to stop Ole Miss and nearly losing, the atrocity aginst UT, the scare against Miss State, Vandy and Kentucky overpowering us at the end of the game, spotting the Gators 21 again. Yes Willie recovered the last two but I say it’s to late, we need consistency, go get a solid DC.

All in all it could have been worse, there is much hope and optimism for next year. Let’s let Munson call another National Championship.

This move was not a surprise to me, but the timing was. I think most of us had a feeling that Bobo would eventually take the play-calling duties, and that CMR was just waiting for the right moment, but turning him loose against Tenuta’s tenacious D took some kinda confidence.

Stafford’s relationship with CB is as strong as with CMR himself, and we all know that CMR can use the extra time to manage the whole team the entire game. Calling every play requires undivided concentration on the OC’s part, and any adversity, such as injuries, bad calls, hot heads, etc. presents a major distraction from the task at hand.

As I stated in earlier posts, if it works for Tuberville, Fulmer, and Gailey, its at least worth a try. Good move, maybe overdue.

I have to tip my hat to Richt. I have been very critical of his offense the last few years and it really does take a strong guy to swallow his pride and make a change like this. I was reading comments and honestly I think people are underestimating our linebacker corps next year. We are all going to miss Tony Taylor and the rest of our linebackers really bad but honestly I like our linebackers next year. Darryl Gamble, Akeem Dent, Akeem Hebron who are our three RS Freshman have speed to burn and will be great. Plus Ellerbe and Dewberry who are both big, strong, and fast. Washington should be a good one also. Plus, I would be shocked if Rennie Curran doesn’t see the field next year. His anticipation and tackling skills are just to good to sit on the sideline. Overall, I love our defense next year. I can’t wait.

Anonymous, Our linebacker corp is going to be killer next year. They spent this year getting bulked up in the weight room and learing. Hebron will be the man watch and see.

Buck, you didn’t ask me but I certainly hope he takes some of that speed and puts DOWN the field. I like seeing USC (Jarrett) and UM (Manningham) flying down the field and under the ball for those break away long TD’s. Other than that 53 yarder against Auburn I haven’t seen enough of that. We got the arm and the speed let’s use it. Then get that possession receiver working for the middle routes (although our TE’s do a great job of that when they hang onto the ball). I see a lot of misdirection, pump fakes with the passing game next year). If we draw Vick Tech for a bowl game it will be interesting. They are probably the best overall team in the ACC right now. Kinda like LSU in the SEC.

I predict that there won’t be a lot of change in the plays called for a while, at least. Just as CMR has loyalty to his assistants, they will show loyalty to him. If Bobo came out with a wide open offense that took off, it makes CMR look bad. If it didn’t work, it makes them both look bad. I think that we will stay with the same type of scheme and any change will be gradual. Besides, Bobo is going to be running off of a sheet approved by CMR and Calloway(to some extent)its not like he has been given the reins to do whatever he likes. It will definately be a positive thing all the way around.

Kalmazoo, did you notice that MR made a point to praise that last drive when CB started throwing down field? Threw the ball 5 times. Make no mistake about it, as he gains confidence, MR will give CB a lot more latitude in calling the plays. I don’t expect to see much difference in the bowl game but I’m saying it now, there will be a difference in ‘07 that everybody can see and it’ll be with MRs backing. Having been there, he’s not going to handcuff CB. That didn’t happen to MR after C Bowden gained confidence in him and he’ll not handcuff CB. Notice we just got Vince Vance so that two JUCO products in two days. Now, maybe MR can make a couple of his famous in home visits and we can keep a couple of those Ga. Just had to say a few words as a Tech fan, after a few days of crying towels. Yeah, Reggie sucked, but we knew he was capable of it. That led to Calvins lack of catches. Yeah, the refs blew one fumble call by allowing it to be advanced, but Tech has received the same such gifts in the past. UGA did what they had to do when it was on the line. Congrats to the Dogs. I was hoping we’d win this one, because it’ll be harder next year.

Buck, yes I did. IMO I think we do use the bowl game to get it down the field. Why not? Not going to effect with “rankings” or anything. Pretty much the same characters back for next year everywhere except the OL. So if they can hold up in the bowl game it may be pretty exciting game and a great glimpse into next year.

When MR descirbes what they do now in game planning, all he’s doing is repeating what they did at FSU but make no mistake about it, when he got up in that box he was on his own. BTW, I posted else where but I would love to see MR hire Amato at GA. They made a great team at FSU and MR has a lot of faith in Amato’s way of “D”; howevere, as I said I’m just dreaming.

kALAMAZOO, MAYBE HE’S JUST NOT A HC, BUT HE AND MR SURELY DID WORK WELL TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME AND I’D LOVE TO SEE THEM RE-UNITE. MAYBE MY WISHING MAY TURN OUT TO BE THE REAL THINK.

Buck, that’s true some are cutout for HC postion and some do much better just running one side of the game.

Hell if he wanted to protect Bobo. He would not have told us Bobo called that offense. 250 yards and 8 points….Very impressive.

One game calling plays, means nothing. Will take 1 or 2 yrs., to determine Bobo’s ability. My understanding that from the box Bobo has relayed the defenses and perceived weaknesses to MR, who would in turn call the play. Play calling reponsibility has been a progression over the last 2/3 yrs. - not overnight. MR, will be a lot like BB @ FSU, making the ultimate decision. Do not expect radical changes, was anyone questioning the play calling last year against AU or LSU-think not.

Ware through the key block on Georgia’s last TD against Tech. Would Lumpkin have made that block?

Could you imagine SOS, giving up offensive responsibility @ USC- no way.

Chip, this game is not the most important game of the year. Not anymore. It is not even close.
