UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs get plays when they need them

Athens — What an exciting game … well, at least the second half (they ran out of coffee in the press box, if that tells you anything).

The sudden boost of offense by Georgia in the fourth quarter for the game-winning drive — 12 plays, 64 yards, TD pass from Matthew Stafford to Mahomed Massaquoi — got me to wondering about all the questions surrounding Georgia’s offense.

Up until that last drive, it hadn’t played very well at all. The Bulldogs were in danger of not scoring an offensive touchdown at Sanford Stadium for the first time since 2001, when they lost to South Carolina 14-9.

Now Georgia was well-matched by John Tenuta’s Tech defense. They moved the ball moderately well, but occasionally were knocked backward on one of the Yellow Jackets’ patented blitzes. But that’s what happens against a high risk-defense such as Tenuta’s.

What didn’t happen is what good teams are supposed do, especially teams with supposedly high-octane offenses such as Georgia’s. They’re supposed to hit back with an occasional big play against these kinds of defenses. Other than the Auburn game, that’s been a problem for the Bulldogs this season: They don’t hit back hard enough.

Amazingly, Georgia’s long run from scrimmage this season was 41 yards by Danny Ware against Western Kentucky in the first game. The longest pass play was Matt Stafford to A.J. Bryant for 53 yards against Auburn in Game 11.

Like me, Georgia fans are probably more accustomed to seeing the Dogs go the distance more often. Heck, you saw few trick plays.

But Georgia’s winning streak against Tech moves to six games, which is truly remarkable. Say this for Bulldogs coach Mark Richt — he certainly gets the job done.

So question is this: Does this prove Georgia doesn’t need a dedicated play-caller, as is so often maintained by so many Georgia fans? Is there merit to the argument that head coach Mark Richt should not also be calling plays? If not him, who?

Or is it fine like it is?

  1. How ‘Bout Them Dawgs!

  2. 15-13.

  3. Jasper Sanks never fumbled but Reggie Ball sure did.

  4. Thanks Reggie for 4 great years. Love UGA.

  5. SEC 3 — ACC 0.

  6. I hope Calvin still gets a Heisman invitation after what Reggie did to him today.

  7. UGA — ACC Champs.

  8. Any more Stafford comments, Nerds?

  9. Tech, please win the ACC so you don’t cheat UGA out of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

  10. Calvin — Take Coach Richt’s advice and go pro before you have to deal with a freshman QB.

Another year, another win. Watch out for the “moral victory” parade by the Insects, though. When a program has a history of mediocrity, they start saying “It was close, though.” With Ball leaving, Tech may have a shot next year!

What a difference three weeks make. From 6-4 and left for dead after losses to Vandy and UK, to 8-4 and wins against ranked Auburn and GT teams, as well as increased optimism for the future. I will enjoy watching the Dawgs play in whatever bowl they get invited to, and that is something I don’t think many of us felt a few weeks back.

Where was Sutherland? Was he hurt? I know we ended up scoring but could have used him down there on the goal line. Not sure how CBS picked Stafford as player of the game. He played well but Oliver was player of the game. He shut C. Johnson down. Wonder if Calvin now wishes he had signed with UGA.

I think Richt is the guy for the job, both as head coach and play caller. I would like to see him remain aggressive throughout the entire game, and stick to the run when it’s picking up 5 yards a clip. I have one other comment: can the players please have some class…no more jumping in the endzone! It could have cost us the game twice this year…play hard and act like you’ve been there before.

During the game, I often find myself questioning the play-calling. It seems as though we’re very convservative, and even somewhat predictable by opposing defenses. I would love to see us open it up on offense a little more next year. For example, Stafford’s zone read on the first play of the game. We need more of that in our offense to get defenses on their heels. No doubt, it was a great win! I would just like to us a be a little more versatile on the offensive side of the ball. We’ve got the talent! If we’re ever going to truly compete for a NT, we need to continue to improve in the area of offensive plays, and play calling. Granted, Richt’s calls on the winning drive were very good. He does find ways to win ball games! I’ll take in a row over TECH. They were humiliated!!! Go DAWGS!!

First of all, great game. Too bad Reggie has to graduate, but Stafford will be around for at least 2 or 3 years, so we can look forward to some more of this.

For O cordinator, I think it would help to have someone in here who can focus on the offense all the time. Richt can still write plays, and even have veto power. But in the wake of two big victories, we should be thankful that we can still have a 9 win season and look forward to improving next year.

great job stafford, momass. Tony Taylor you are one hell of a gravedigger. Willie, you are much maligned, but geat job.

BUT CMR, i have been very vocal against you this year. and you have proved me wrong. this year might have been your best coaching job. To salvage an 8-4 season out of this for me is incredible. The funny thing is that you are actually that close to being either 4-8 this year but you were also just as close to being undefeated. Incredible. Great job, CMR. I will not doubt you anymore. 8-4. Hopefully, 9-4 after the bowl game. I have one request though: CMR, can you drive down to flowery branch tonight and teach mora and his team that when you are facing adversity, what it truly means to FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! and overcome adversity. CMR, thanks for putting egg on my face.

we got one for all of our thumbs last year. now we have one for the thumb of antonio alfonseca.

One last thing: REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! don’t fret tech, only two more games and chan and reggie will stop holding your fan base hostage.

Didn’t we just beat G.T. who has a new offensive cordinator. Also, a running back (next year) with real speed, not average like ours, and a smart quarterback who has a strong arm, like ours, should make a coach look like an offensive genius. So,coach Richt will call the plays next year.

What we saw tonight was the coming of a fantastic QB. And how about the receivers who actually caught the ball and a a defense that showed up all game long?

  1. So question is this: Does this prove Georgia doesn’t need a dedicated play-caller, as is so often maintained by so many Georgia fans?

No it proves that Georgia does indeed need an offensive coordinator. Richt is a great head coach but his feeling for the game and what needs to be called at times leaves a lot to be desired. When he was the OC and Quarterbacks coach at FSU he only had to concentrate on one aspect of the game.

  1. Is there merit to the argument that head coach Mark Richt should not also be calling plays? If not him, who?

He should hire a coach with a proven track record of success.

  1. Or is it fine like it is?

No, its not fine as it has cost GA several games over the last 6 years due to his poor play selection such as the Florida game in 2002, which cost us a shot at the National Championship.

Give Oliver the game ball, give Taylor the season ball!.Good finish, this team has a lot to look forward to,Stafford was contained all game till it mattered the most, then with the game on the line he was the star he seems destined to be.Give credit to Martinez I think his schemes are better than Vangorders but he needs a coach dedicated to teaching tackleing. The D line deserves praise as well Moses had his best game this season and Johnson was the best C.J. in the game,I think Gant is one of these guys who could be a better pro than college player. All in all well done Dawgies !!!!

Bibble, you couldn’t have said it better. I am so proud of how this team came together in the past few weeks to upset then-#5 Auburn and, today, #15 Tech. A lot of teams faced with the adversity that Georgia faced this season would have imploded but the Dawgs continued to believe in themselves and worked hard to improve. I admit at times this season I was rough on them (especially after Tennessee, Vandy, and Kentucky), but I knew this team had the talent to do well if they believed in themselves and put forth the effort. I still think Coach Richt needs an Offensive Coordinator but Martinez and the rest of the staff have redeemed themselves. IT IS GREAT TO BE A GEORGIA BULLDOG, ESPECIALLY AFTER BEATING TECH

Great win UGA. I will repeat my comment after the Auburn game. What could have been if Coach had stayed with Stafford. Nothing against JoeT, but I see us being much better if Coach had stayed with Matt against UT. He grew up big time on that last drive in Lexington. Great win DAWGS. Good luch Tech against mighty Wake Forest, what a joke of a conference game.

ftmyers…point well taken. I am not a fan of a negative blog topic after the big win. Overall, I think our coaching staff deserves more credit than they got. At the same time, a second offensive mind who can talk with the O while the D is on the field would likely help.

When watched the game today there seemed to be an “it” factor that we do not have. I don’t know if it is a personnel issue or just a lack of innovation in playcalling or what. Throughout the year I seem to feel the same way after each game. I know we had to adjust to the whole QB situation and a qestionable O-line. I can appreciate strong north south running but it seems as though our RB’s don’t have or show the quickness and explosion that I would love to see. I look at some of the RB’s around the country and think of how nice it would be to have a real playmaker in the backfield. I do believe that Moreno and King will improve that situation though. We all know about the struggles with the WR’s. It would be nice to have a real high powered offense that would survive a shootout with any team despite the defense. I really believe a fresh addition to the offensive play calling together with some new faces on the field will prove beneficial.

Go Dawgs!!!!!

2 suggestions for Offensive Coordinator:

  1. Jeff Bowden

  2. Terry Bowden

  3. Greg Knapp.

It is critical that CMR get one of those 3 guys:) Maybe he should get Tommy Bowden as well. Because Tommy Bowden has proven once again that he can do less with more than any other coach in the game. Spiller, Davis, and all of that explosive speed and they continue with the mediocrity? what a joke.

If CMR can not get knapp of one of the bowden boys, just for the sake ofpissing off the ole ball coach, CMR should call spurrier up and in a deadpan manner ask spurrier if he would be interested in leaving SC so that he could be the OC for UGA. CMR is too classy to do it but he has the deadpan style which would help him pull it off. I would love to see spurrier get all angry about it. Do we have a booster or alumnus out there who has the ability and willingness to call spurrier up and p** him off with that kind of phone call?

Please cut out the ACC champs crap! Dogs are not part of the ACC and we never want to be. We are the SEC, and we want to win the SEC championship-national championship period… That being said, the Jackets ran from the SEC many years ago. They went independant, went 1-10 every year and decided to step up to the ACC. Congrats to them, they are a better program for it. Not SEC cabliber mind you, not even in basketball (2 Final Four SEC teams last year, - Tech has only two wins against UGA in men’s basketball since 1999 in basketball and UGA has been terrible). That being said, I will give Reggie Ball credit, he was seen on the sideline after his second pick to Paul Oliver (who played one heck of a game)trying to pump up his teamates about the importance of next week. It will be his shining moment against UGA.
One last thought-only if Calvin Johnson had signed with the Dawgs, we would have played in the National Championship the past two years with Greene and Shockley at the helm, and we would have had a chance at the SEC Championship this year with him as well.

Yes, I am one of those fans who was highly critical of Coach Martinez. I still hate his scheme, but maybe the players should have shouldered some of the blame. Our D looked like an NFL defense that last drive. You could clearly see our players wanted it more on that last drive. I still think we need an offensive coordinator. The play calling did not win the game…Stafford’s arm on 3rd downs were huge. CMR called a run on first and second down the last series. I was expecting the old screen pass there on 3rd down when MoMass redeemed himself. Great game. We still need a couple of more linemen for next year. Go get em Rodney Garner. ITS GREAT TO BE A DAWG. Three points: 1) We still can’t have any effictive run defense schemes. Our players are great, but Martinez is stink. He wiil betray MR in the BIG ONE like, bowl game, SEC champ, or NC gamrs.2) Let Bobo call plays under MR supervision. 3) PUT SOME PRESSURE on punter, he got too easy punt= easy coverage down field= that why Mickey and Asher didn’t have to much success. Note: Hope some body call defensive plays in bowl game. 9-4 is OK not great. I am ready for the next year.

Sunny Ray,

I agree CMR is a class act. I made the trip to KY and was at the stadium when he came off the bus. There was not a hair out of place. I saw the piece ABC did on him and I hope he never leaves Athens. These idiots calling for his head today need to pull for the trade school. Total class, and you can’t help but feel he is instilling some of this in certain players. I do think we need to lose the dive in the end zone crap. It almost cost us the game on the return. Looks like USC is going to crush ND. Just as well, Florida is not that good. They beat us on 3 or 4 plays again this year. I am not impressed at all and expect Arkansas to spank them next week.

Here is what it comes down to:

Reggie Ball is an untalented BLACK quarterback.

If he weren’t BLACK, he never would have been a starter, much less a 4 year starter.

This is why I don’t particularly care for sports: untalented BLACK athletes are promoted over more talented White athletes.

Mike Bobo needs to be OC and call plays. He’s qualified enough to do it. If Richt won’t let him someone will hire him away to be their OC. Richt just needs to be the head coach, not play caller. In any event, GO DAWGS!

Congratulations Dog Fans. I hate to say it, but your guys ran the show the whole game. The 3rd down conversions were amazing. The fumble was a fumble, I just don’t see how it wasn’t down on the ground. Anyway, no matter now. But, Calvin wasn’t shut down by your guy (although he was respectable). He was shut down by a poor quarterback night. Makes you think term-limits are a good idea, doesn’t it? I’m sick to death of losing this one, but I’m not as disheartened as I was after last year’s game when I said I didn’t see us ever winning again. I’m right so far. For the ignorant GT fans that post all the crap and smack, I apologize. Like a lot of your fans (see the Tech blog), they probably don’t actually get to college very often. Anyway, enjoy a good win. Before everyone celebrates to hard, we should be thankful that the season has been salvaged. Many of the wins could have just as easily been losses including today’s. When the Dawgs lose to Kentucky and Vanderbilt and almost to Colorado, I wonder just where the program stands. We were fortunate to catch Auburn undermanned and error prone and GA Tech without solid quaterbacking. Now other schools such as GT are reaping the harvest of GA high school talent and the competition gap has closed considerably. We should enjoy how the season ended but put it in perspective with how easily it could have toppled downhill. Next year could be fantastic but just as easily fall on the negative side of the ledger. Lets face it, college football is becoming more and more competitive and there are very few easy games anymore. Don’t be fooled by the headlines, the program is solid but far from great….there’s lots of building still to be done.

Great win for the Dawgs, I knew it would be close because both teams had very good defenses. I have to say Willie Martinez just like our team stepped up the last two games after we got our backs against the wall and did a great job. I just hope he continues to play his defense to our players strengths. As for Matthew Stafford the future does indeed look very bright for our Dawgs as Buck Cochran has been saying all along. Go Dawgs

To GTFan,

To say Reggie is untalented is a cop out. He reminds me of a former Georgia player (Hines Ward). Maybe he should not have been a quarterback for 4 years, but you have to get him on the field in some capacity. I think he could play receiver or possibly be a DB at the next level if a team is willing to develop him. Did Tech toy with making him a running back his Soph year? In all seriousness, I thought Tech’s front 7 on defense played great. Nobody is writing about the dropped balls today or our poor showing in the red zone again. I just hope Stafford will learn to slide more and get out of bounds before he gets hurt. He can not continue trying to take on LB’s and linemen at this level. I predict Joe Cox leaves, lets hope MoMass stays and does not follow him back to Carolina.

I’m a huge Tech fan and I give Paul Oliver tons of credit today. He played a great game and Stafford showed that he could be better than the beloved David Greene. I will admit also that the SEC is a much stronger conference this year and UGA has a superior football program. I just hate to see our entire team play so well except for one player that has been doing this for four years. Give us even Joe Cox and we would have won that game. I think Tech is heading in the right direction with a great recruiting class. Finally, I don’t think many programs will be able to say their football team made a bowl, hoops team make the tourney, and baseball team make the tournament like we will. So I will still argue with any UGA fan on who has the better athletics program. Congratulations on yet another win though.

While the 51-7 beatdown was great, GTU just took it like a …flagboy. 15-12 takes the cake for me as I got to see the geeks in Section 103 up-close get put in their place. They were CERTAIN after it was 12-7 that it was over with the Grand Master Tenuta calling the shots. LOL! I still cant stop laughing!

Another good win for the team. It was a close game but our team found a way to win the game. Stafford played good. He is beginning to understand when the throw the ball out of bounds. That is good because sometimes young players try to be a gunslinger like Brett Favre. The defense played well again! Oliver and the gang played well. Those hits on James Johnson made him think about catching the ball. I want to feel bad for Reggie Ball because I am sure that the Tech people will make him remember that he never beat Georgia. Calvin Johnson will have to remember the same thing since he will probably go to the NFL in the upcoming year. He should have came to UGA and not GT. A good win for the team and a confidence builder for the team. I love Stafford’s enthusiasm. Did you see his reaction after we scored in the 4th quarter? I believe the kid will take us to the next level as long as we surround him with top quality players. Go Dawgs!!!

our offensive play calling is still average at best, i think we need a dedicated play caller. tonight, GT had their safties up all night long, 10 yds or less off the line. when the D is showing no respect for the deep pass, you gotta throw it up there ever so often, even if you don’t connect. we never challenged the GT safties and that’s why we couldn’t run. I give MR credit for sticking with the run, we kept trying, but when the safties are so close to the line, you have to take a few shots down field and we never did. MR is too conservative and has been since he’s been here.

First of all, congrats on the win. Thought we might have had a shot this year, but we came up short again. However, I do have a problem with the way UGA fans ended the game with kicking Reggie while he is down. The guy has struggled against yall for 4 years and after the last interception the stadium starts shouting his name over and over. Pretty bushleague to do that to a college athlete after having a bad game. I lost a lot of respect for UGA fans tonight after that happened, poor form. For Gods sake, show some humility. You can check my record on these blogs. When we lost I admitted the better team won, ask the General. Get over it. It is a game played by kids, as fun as winning may be. Acting like spoiled babies does not make a recruit want to run to the Varsity and get a dog walking. Grow up.

Last I checked, there was a column missing for moral victories. I claim none this year.

congrats UGA, you were the winner today, but by no means is georgia a good team. they have no offense, and if GT had a QB or a coach, it would have been a blowout win for GT. good riddance reggie, you are horrible, and chan, you’re lucky you signed that extension, because you need to be fired. your game plan and in game execution was pathetic.

To UGASUCKS: What about our DB’s makes you think they can’t hold Calvin’s jock? What this guy so damn special in the first place? Is it his “stellar” record against UGA? I think not. Was it his amazing 4 catches against Utah in the ‘05 Emerald Nut Bowl. Probably not. Oh, wait, I know, it was the 0 catch performance versus Clemson. No, that’s still not it. It must have been dropping the winning TD in the ‘05 NC state game. Whatever, he doesn’t want the ball when the game is on the line. More simply put: OVERATED!!!!

How many times must I get heart-broken by this team (GT)? UGA played well ended up on top. However, I do have one problem with the trash talking (Everything else is legit) Calvin Johnson is a hell of a receiver and a great person. Yeah he may say hes the best WR in the nation, but who doesn’t? To say that he is overrated or not good is just foolish. I’ve see that man make more amazing catches in 3 years than any other WR ever. And these catches are coming from you “MVP” Reggie Ball. I hope everyone can see that when he is in the NFL and hopefully not on another team with a QB who can’t get him the ball.

km …

  1. If you really own a company, which I doubt, if you wouldn’t pick someone to work for you because they are a UGa grad, you are not a very good business owner. No good business person would determine the best person for the job solely on where they went to school. As a business owner, it is clear from your statement that you are not.

  2. According to the rankings you site, Georgia Tech is #38. UGa is #60. First, there isn’t much difference there. Second, I went to Vandy undergrad which is #18. That means the difference between Vandy and GaTech is about the same as GaTech and UGa. Should I not hire a GaTech grad because you are ranked 20 slots less than Vandy? That would be a stupid decision on my part, so you can see what a moronic argument you are making.

  3. Your starting salaries site is highly misleading. When comparing technology graduates v. non-technology graduates, technology graduates have historically made more directly out of college, but made less over the long run (unless you go into non-technical roles like management, ownership, etc). The reason for this is rather obvious … the technical knowledge you learn in college can be more immediately used by technology companies. Meanwhile, knowledge learned to be used in non-technical avocations (1) takes longer to develop and mature to the point where it is more useful to employers and therefore more valuable, and/or (2) is in areas that simply don’t pay as well … political science, sociology, history, religion, philosophy … but are obviously areas of education that are important to our society in general.

So, give the “we are smarter” BS a rest. We’re talking football here, and you got the worst of it today. Take your beat down like a man and move on.

BTW, KM, in addition to Law Dawg’s comments, I am a double dawg (UGA law grads know what I mean) and have a few stats for you as well. US News & World Report Ranks UGA’s MBA program ahead of Ga Tech’s and ranks UGA’s Business school (undergrad) signficiantly ahead of Tech’s. Moreover, UGA has a top tier law school. Tech has no law school whatsoever. Many Tech IM and IE grads have to settle for Ga State or Mercer. And, those grads coming from Tech into UGA’s or Emory’s law school typically do not fare as well as UGA grads or any student with a liberal arts background. So, when you are applying to colleges (I also doubt you own a business) consider our comments.

For KM,I have to echo LawDawg and Thomas here. I do own a business (100+ employees), and I decide who I am going to hire based on the individual, not upon an athletic rivalry-driven bias. To imply otherwise is to reveal oneself as both (a) and idiot, and (b) a liar, for you cannot own a business and allow such petty concerns to govern your decision-making. I’ve hired Florida grads, Georgia State grads and even Tech grads (also Duke, UNC, Johns Hopkins, Virginia, Boston University, Cornell, etc). What matters is the person.

Also, to echo LawDawg, starting salaries out of undergrad don’t mean squat. It’s lifetime earnings that matter. I challenge you to find any data that support a contention that Tech grads do better over the course of a career. My first job after undergrad only paid $18,000 a year. But you know what? It was a medical residency. After med school. And the relevance of that salary 20 years ago to my current earnings? Zero.

None of which has ANYTHING to do with football.

(Which, BTW, you may recall is the origin of commentary for this blog).

You lost. Again. Deal with it. And cut out the pseudoacademic crap. You don’t have the data to back it all up. Moreover, it is not relevant to this discussion.

Was that Reggie Ball or Micheal Vick?

By ralph the dawg

November 26, 2006 07:57 AM | Link to this

You pathetic losers. You are talking about college kids. Reggie is a college kid. How would you feel if when you were a college kid in your late teens and early twenties, and you, your son, your cousin, your nephew, your grandson, your brother, your friend, your neighbor, the guy you go to church with on sundays had to be constantly attacked and criticized by a bunch of creepy old alumni, spoiled brat undergrads, and jackass UGA fans all over a stupid football game that is played by a bunch of college kids. It is not right. I care about the dawgs as much as anyone but college football is college football. If he was being paid $130 million like Vick in the pros, then hell go for it. He is just a stupid college kid just like I was a stupid college kid and the rest of you were stupid college kids.

I will say this about Reggie. That kid tried harder than pretty much every player in the NCAA over the past four years. He left every ounce of effort, blood, sweat, and tears out there on the field for you. Were those QB skills limited due to height issues, the fact that he has a decent but not strng arm, and the fact that he has speed but is not wicked fast and quick like Vick or Pat White? Yes! SHould he have been playing safety instead? Yes! Is it his fault that he was the starter for the last 4 years? No! He was recruited to play the position and his coach never found someone else to take it from him! That is the coaches’ fault, not reggie’s fault! He just did what he was asked to do and I have never seen another player care as much or try as hard as he did.

Does he have a chip on his shoulder? Hell yes he does. He is 5 foot 8 inches tall trying to play a tall man’s position. That is the only way he could ever somewhat be a QB. Look at Doug Flutie, another tiny guy who had the biggest chip on his shoulder for 25 years in college and the pros. That chip was so big that Flutie had to spend 10 years in exile in the CFL before the Bills brought him back to the NFL. I would not say that Ball’s chip on his shoulder is any bigger than Flutie’s ever was. Did it come out misguided and misdirected and angry at times? Yes! But was he under constant attack during his entire late teens and early twenties by creepy adults who like to attack young college teenagers? Yes! So how would you expect a stupid college kid to act when he is being perpetually hounded by creepy alumni and spoiled brat undergrads? We were all stupid, immature, and overemotional at that age and we all did and said things we regret.

I think that if Reggie had played for a better program or a better coach, the perception of him would have been much different. I compare him to the Newton dude up at South Carolina. Under Holtz and Spurrier, the newton guy was a coaches dream. He started games at QB, RB, WR, Safety, and played special teams. He excelled at times at all positions but was really a jack of all trades and a master of none. SO, i think that if Reggie had had a better coach who brought some other QB recruits in, Reggie could have been a change of pace, lightning in a bottle QB late in a game or a season like Newton was for a stretch this season, or he could have been a decent change of pace Dave Meggett like RB, a decent eric metcalf like WR, a hellcat on special teams, and probably a very good safety who would have ripped people’s heads off. SO, i think a big part of the problem with reggie was that Chan sucks and that Chan should have found other good QBs to play and then used Reggie in that jack of all trades role where he is just valued by the team and fans and alumni and undergrads as a good hard nosed football player who will do anything to help the team win. BUT Chan sucks so it was not meant to be.

Granted, Reggie’s comments after the game were regrettable and they do tick you off. But did you see him at the end of the game? Just by looking at Reggie Ball and his body language, no tech fan was more angry, embarrassed, humiliated by that performance than Reggie was. I mean he did not even walk over to give the little kissass obligatory handshakes with stafford, richt and the dawgs after the game because he was so disgusted with himself and his team for losing that game. Contrast that with MV7, who last week after that disgusting ravens loss was seen by all of us going over to other team, giggling, giving high fives, and just have a yuckfest and grand ole good time with Ed Reed and Mcnair. As a falcons fan, I wish we could take even half the competitiveness, heart, and desire out of reggie and combine that with the talent of Mr. Vick.

Do I understand how disappointed you all are yet again with reggie and the bugs? Of course. But please remember that kid may have been limited in ability but he gave you everything he had for 4 years.

Besides, bug fans, you have got to play in the conference championship game next week. Yes, your QB played bad. Do you not think that he and his family and friends are going to read this crap? How is all of this negativity going to help the confidence of your QB and team when you need him to be the difference maker or at least to play decent enough to allow CJ to be the difference maker next week?

Stop being so selfish. Rally around your QB. you only have two games left with him. Those two games however are important ones: ACC championship game against a terrible Wake Forest team and then the bowl game. You need him to play well. So stop the silly selfish woe is me, napoleon complex all you techies seem to love to have and rally around your team and QB.

In this day and age, with so many demands on a head coaches time - TV, radio, speaking engagements, management duties - I don’t see how UGA can continue to win championships without someone dedicated full time to the offense - watching thousands of feet of file, developing game plans is a time consuming job. Coach Richt, title the position what you will, but PLEASE hire an offense coordinator!

Great win dawg fans. Congrats. I really thought both defenses played a great game and Matt Stafford looked great down the stretch. Reggie Ball on the other hand looked horrible. I was so disappointed with him. He had played fairly well this season with the exception of the Clemson game and I really thought he had a shot against UGA this year. Lesson learned. Diving into the end zone as a showboat, and making a stupid personal foul on 4th and 14 with under a minute til the end of the game. Georgia did not win the ball game, Tech gave it away, more precisely Reggie gave it away. Georgia had a number of mental errors:

A-Inman personal foul on the 1st drive, this guy is worse than Ball;

B-Either 3 or 4 dropped balls;

C-Fumble on the exchange.

Personally felt like Tech had more talent, with the exception of the QB position.

Chan, is the George Bush of college football, not a positive for Tech but a positive for Georgia.

WOW, how can one city have two African-American quarterbacks that can’t find the an open receiver, can’t check off at the line, can’t throw from a pocket, can’t hit an open receiver, but can fumble while trying to be running back. Georgia fans should be very proud of their defense and the defensive scheme yesterday. The Georgia offense is going to get better and better over the next few years. I hope you can find one running back to rely on. T. Choice is a great running back and as a Sooner fan, I miss him but I understand why he transfered. The only thing I pray for is that when Calvin goes pro he doesn’t get drafted by the Falcons so he can get overthrown to for years to come. I said last week on here that Georgia had three quarterback better than Reggie and Reggie proved me correct. Reggie won’t answer for his failures because in his mind he is treated unfairly by the Tech fans and the media….Tech protects him like the Falcons protect Mike. Big Dawg, cuz,Tokyo Dawg, all of you, thanks very much for the kind words they are appreciated. After yesterday’s game, I really believe that MR needs to hire a true “OC” and be the Head Coach. He’s said that the most fun he’s ever had was as the “OC” for FSU, sitting in the box calling plays. IMO, being the Head Man includes overseeing everything and not just be a play caller during the game. He’s not going to do this and it’ll hurt Ga. in the chase for the “NC”. BTW, going into J’ville, if he’s used properly, we have what’s needed to beat the Reptiles. He’s 6’3”, 230lbs. and named Matthew Stafford. Yesterday our offense played not to lose. In the AU game we played to win. It’s the playing to win attitude that’ll beat the Reptiles.

Hey Mike: I’d rather be unranked than to lose to a bunch from a second rate conference like the ACC! Get used to the fact that Tech will always be No. 2 in the state of Georgia. Cheer up, basketball season is close at hand, and maybe y’all can beat us at that THIS YEAR!!!!

Mike: That may be so, but you know what it doesn’t really matter,b/c it don’t matter what your little polls said, it’s who won the game that counts. So put that in your polls, and continue to be ranked instead of winning the game which in turn is what counts.

Hey Tech fans. Use the UGAY excuse…….”We don’t care if we lose to you! We are going to play for a conference championship and play in the BCS”. This is what they said during the previous 5 years after the Jacksonville smack down. They aren’t saying it this year! Who’s in Atlanta this year? And I ain’t talking about the Peach Bowl. I hate to hear UGAY gloating no matter who it is directed at. Mediocre programs shouldn’t be allowed to gloat. 15-17!!!!

GTFAN, Let’s talk about class. I sat on the 50, press box side, and as the GT band walked onto the field during the half time show, 4 band members turned around and flipped of the UGA fans at the same time. Not fans, BAND MEMBERS!!!

That is classless.

One for the Thumb:

That is classy. It takes big person to own up when they were wrong. I too have been critical of Martinez and agree that in three of the last four games the D played great. I’m still not sold on him, but we have to admit that the UGA played about as well as they ever did in the FL, Auburn, and Tech games.

I didn’t see that coming from a Tech fan. Who could have predicted that after UGA won the sixth in a row a Tech geek would make a fast food joke. That was creative and original and should help take away some of the sting of that loss… or maybe not.

Ramble On!, you are the reason your fans are called stupid rednecks. I am a 20-year-old Indian male. I was at the game and was the target of several racist comments that began the night before the game and did not end until Saturday night. We all talk trash, but only on the topic of football. UGA fans are one of the most classless groups of people I have ever encountered. In 20 years, the only place I have experienced racism is Athens, not only including this weekend. Way to represent your school.

Lumps:

That is fair. Turnovers, Drops, and penalties cost us 3 maybe even all four ballgames that we lost.

Richt’s teams have not been turnover prone like this in years past, but we sure have had a lot of penalties and drops over the years. You can’t eliminate penalites and drops, but I bet we lead the league or come close in those categories in Richt’s tenure.

I can be critical, but I think Richt is one of the top five coaches in the country and wouldn’t want anyone else at the helm for UGA. I love the fact that he NEVER gets blown out and in six years has us in EVERY game we play. Only a handful of programs can say that.

I hope we can work on being a more disciplined team during this bowl prep and throughout the offseason. Lets GATA.

I’m so sorry you missed the end of that game, but actually UGA won. Not the Thugs from Tech who played 11 inel. players and are curently on probation…played a convicted drug felon, and harbor terrorists.

I wish you had seen it. UGA (the team that suspends players for minor traffic violations and underage drinking) drove 60 yards to take the lead and then Reggie Ball threw another interception to seal the thug’s fate. It is easy to remember… Thugs ryhmes with bugs. This should help you keep it straight in the future.

My memory isn’t that good. Can you remind me when TN last won the SEC. Wasn’t it like way back in the 1990’s? Since then there is a new sheriff in town and his name is Mark Richt. He has won 2 SEC Championships including the last one and had a down year at 8-4 with a Frosh QB.

TN’s version of a down year is 6-6 and no bowl game. Payton Manning was a great QB… just so you know, he left UT a long time ago.

When TN wins another title, you let me know, OK?

Conference Championships and final rankings are more important than any one game. Congrats on “finally” getting to Atlanta for a meaningful game”, but until you actually win that one… you can’t really brag.

It does appear that Florida will end the long long streak of not finishing in the top 10 and not playing in the SECCG, but you still have one more win to make it a special season and I think your fortunue will run out against AR.

Has anyone talked about how Tony Taylor’s dive over the goal line could have cost Georgia the game because of the field position Tech had on the kickoff after the penatly? That’s the second time that has happened this season after an interception. Also, Georgia lost a touchdown early in the season on a kick return because of somebody celebrating going over the goal line.

A great win over Tech, but if your goal is to one day play for a national championship, you can’t have stupid penalties.

Would someone please tell Carter Strickland that The Stanford Cardinal is plural ?

It is so bloody typical of the Big Ten (11) that Wisconsin has beaten absolutely no one, and that the SEC owns the Big Ten (11).

Here sits Wisconsin at Number 7 in the BCS, worse than Florida and LSU both in the Top 5, but ahead of Arkansas Number 9 and Auburn Number 11.

http://stats.ajc.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=ajc&page=cfoot/misc/new-bcs-poll.htm

For what ?

The Big Ten (11) always has some team or teams that don’t play Ohio State and/or Michigan, and Wisconsin is the team this season.

So what have they done ?

Not beaten one single solitary BCS Top 25 team, that is what Wisconsin has done and played only one BCS Top 25 Team and were BLOWN OUT BY MORE THAN TWICE THEIR SCORE.

While we are on this topic of being slighted by voters in the North and in the West, I would also like to highlight OREGON BLOODY STATE.

Oregon State is Number 24 and Hawaii is Number 25, in an obvious attempt by voters of the West to put their teams up high to make Southern California look good. They play each other next, so Georgia still has a shot at making the Final BCS Top 25.

We came up short in the AP Poll before the Final AP Poll, after the bowl game. That is not significant anyway, as at Number 26 as we are or at Number 25, we would have still required the bowl game victory which appears to be the $5.6 million dollar payout of the Peach Bowl.

But, still Oregon State ahead of Georgia ?

Oregon State, you see beat Southern California who is infinitely beatable.

But the Big Ten (11) and the PAC 10 only have 3 BCS Top 25 teams, and everyone knows in the PAC 10, it is just only Southern California, while there remains this confusion about Wisconsin in the Big Ten (11) as to whether they have two as they only always have or 3.

The SEC, denied Georgia from the BCS Top 25 last night at 9:30 p.m., has Numbers, 4, 5, 9, 11 and 16 and should have had Number 25 Georgia BuLLDawgs. There are, before the BCS Top 25 is released after Oregon Bloody State plays Hawaii for God’s sake Saturday, 5 of the BCS Top 16 teams from the SEC and 9 SEC Bowl teams, to lead the nation.

But, the Big Ten (11) doesn’t play a championship game and neither does the PAC 10.

Oregon State has lost 4 games not by close scores but all by total blowouts. None of the 4 are any good. But, 8-4 Oregon State is in and 8-4 Georgia BuLLDawgs are not in.

Still, we have got to win our bowl game.

We will play Virginia Tech in the Peach Bowl and make twice what the vols make for playing in a better bowl.

Georgia beat Number 5 Auburn and Number 16 Georgia Tech.

We can certainly handle Beamer Ball, which is defined as having beaten for the 15th consecutive season, but one lonely Top 25 team itself and that Weak Forest.

The ACC is 1 win 5 losses vs. The SEC this season.

The SEC is 3-1 vs. the PAC 10 this season.

The SEC is 171-142-9 in Bowl Games All-Time, when an actual SEC team at the time played in a bowl game.

This .545 Winning Percentage of SEC Teams in Bowl Games, is by far the best Winning Percentage of any conference.

Georgia Tech is Number 23 in the AP Poll before the Final AP Poll after the bowl games.

Georgia is Number 26 in this AP Poll, Number 29 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, and Number 27 in the Harris Poll, which are the 3 main polls today of the opinion type. Clearly to be the only team who for the last 10 consecutive years has been in the Final AP Poll Top 25, Georgia would require a win in the bowl game whether we were ahead of Oregon State now or not.

Hawaii, what the bloody hell is that in the BCS Top 25 either ?

South Carolina, if it can win its bowl game also, has an outside shot at making the Top 25.

The SEC has 5 teams who are in the Top 16, all clearly stay in the Final Polls no matter the outcome of their remaining game and bowl games, and two us and Spurrier who could make it 7 SEC in the Top 25 at season’s end.

Matthew Stafford Update:

Our true frosh qb who has come on of late, added one more fumble lost to Tech to put Tech ahead in the game Saturday, for 13 total to-date. This continues to be a huge point of emphasis by Coach Richt after every game and in every interview. He does not hold the ball correctly, and still has much to learn. But, he has come on. He threw no interceptions for the 2nd consecutive game, and we won both over Number 5 and Number 16 as a direct result thereof.

For the season now, the only UGA QB to play in every game all season long, he has thrown a measly 1 point 8 percent of his passes for touchdowns.

6.

3 point 2 percent of his plays have gone for touchdowns, and that is only one point worse than David Greene’s career here. There is some hope at the end of the tunnel. It has been a dear price to pay.

He only had 86 yards total against Intramural losing record Vandy and no touchdowns of any type. He was abysmal.

Against Kentucky, he scored one total touchdown and had 3 interceptions and a fumble, which again, speaks for itself as to why we lost.

We are not ranked as a direct result thereof.

But, we can be.

Because he damn sure smoked Georgia Tech’s Jon Tenuta’s defense, shredding them with the game on the line for the come-from-behind win over a ranked opponent on the final drive.

Good play calls, and well executed. Did you see the touch on the wide-open receivers ? And, how about that pump-fake to get Tech’s DB to come forward leaving our top WR Mohamed Massaquoi Wide A*******sed open the end zone for the Wining TD with 1:45 on the clock ?

**If we had gotten the plays when we needed them with our true frosh qb against Intramural losing record Vandy and Kentucky, we would be a Top 10 team.

GTForever- UGA is ranked 4th in the SEC; that is a fact. You all will most likely win the ACC championsip and hopefully your bowl game. That will make our victory that much sweeter to say that on our “rebuilding year” of finishing 4th in the SEC we still beat the ACC champions and the winner of the Orange Bowl!! HA!

Oliver can’t hold CJ’s jock? Maybe not, but he did hold him to 2 catches for 13 yards…..in the first half!! 0 for 0 in the second!!

Did anybody listen to the 5th quarter show Saturday night. Kevin Butler was ripping Reggie Ball and GT Fans every 10 seconds! It was hilarious!!

Great win over Tech first of all. But even more than that I am really excited that Richt is giving Bobo a shot with the playcalling, I think it gives us a chance to be even better by freeing up Richt on other things and most likely allowing more time for scheming opponents. No doubt Richt will still be very involved in the offense which will be great as well. Bravo to MR for being open to change and showing an ability to adjust.

To my Dawgs fans

first off i wanted to say that i posted the exact same comments on the Tech blog, but i felt it was fair to post it here as well..

this is a die hard tech fan speaking and i wanted to congradulate you on your victory. i was man enough to talk trash all season leading up to the game and i am man enough to eat my words. it hurts, my god it hurts, but once the final seconds tick away and the wistle blows and your teams has not scored more points than its opponent, you have to live with the outcome. i screamed my head off at the game saturday and cried about the playcalling and the fumble, but what real fan wouldnt. if the shoe was on the other foot dawgs fans, you would have been p** as well and you know it. so dont complain about us complaining, its apart of the game. in the end i feel we were outcoached, im not going to comment on the play of Reggie Ball, he’s taken enough heat and has had his fair share of bashing this weeked. but CMR deserves a lot of credit for having faith in his guy at QB, and giving him opportunities to succeed and thats why you guys have beaten us these past few years, six in a row to be exact, but whose counting LOL. i can laugh today, to keep from crying and tomorrow most will be forgotted because we have a greater task at hand. Congrats again dawgs fans you deserve it

i thought the playcalling on sat was great.. the offense moved very nicely and only stalled because of inman’s stupid arse and more dropped balls..

hey i got to give good ol willie some credit… we have all been riding him hard this year… and although he didn’t play an explosive offense this past weekend.. the dawgs d has looked good if not great the past two games..

the offensive line has pass protected much better… (still blow running the ball) so maybe callaway gets a break as well..

BuLLdawg, UGA is not in BCS ranking or any top 25 rankings because you lost to 3 low level SEC teams, beat a 1-11 team in final minutes, almost lost to another low level SEC team, had 51 points scored on you by Tenn, played Florida strong second half beat Auburn and won close to a so-so Tech team. This is the weakiest UGA team during CMR Era.. Where have you been, it seems you get shamed by your CMR downfalls? Auburn is a season saver for CMR, they played well and deserved to win, congrats.

Tech fans are complaining about the refs? Oh, please. The irony of that is just to much. At least that non fumble they are bellyaching about was reviewed by instant replay and confirmed as being correctly called. If they had control of the ball, how did Taylor get it? Do they think for one second that Sanks “fumble” would have been upheld under the same scritiny? Or the Joe Hamilton “non fumble”? Get real nerds

To Judge Dawg: Right on! It seems that the “Insects” only complain about the calls that that don’t go their way! How long would the streak be without the benefit of lousy calls by officials without the use of instant replay? It would seem to me that a school that has the word technology as a part of their name would be all about using replay to make sure that plays are called correct on the field! If they can’t deal with that, maybe they should give up playing football against UGA- they’re really not that good at it anyway! GO DAWGS!!!
