UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Analyzing the positions

OK, there’s no sense in delaying the inevitable. The Tech-Georgia game is just days away and, at this point, it’s on the mind of everybody associated with both schools.

Today, I’m going to ask you all to be objective (yeah, right). I’m going to make a quick, two-minute position-by-position analysis, giving one team or the other an advantage in each area unless it’s absolutely indistinguishable, then adding them up to determine which team SHOULD win (doesn’t mean they will, of course).

Feel free to bash my determinations (as if you needed my permission). In fact, I’m looking forward to your feedback on this. This is one of those exercises in which there will be a lot of gray area. Remember, this is quick, off the top of my head:

Quarterback: Advantage Tech

Reggie Ball has had his share of problems over the years but you’re talking about a four-year starter versus a first-year freshman.

Offensive line: Advantage Georgia

This is a really tough call but I’m going to go with Georgia because it utilizes four seniors and a junior and has given up 13 sacks to Tech’s 15.

Tight end: Advantage Georgia

Martrez Milner has had his drop issues but is actually very productive and a good blocker. Tech at times has had to use a converted tackle out there.

Wide receiver: Advantage Tech

Are you kidding? There’s only one Calvin Johnson, and James Johnson is pretty darn good, too. Georgia has potential but that means only you haven’t done much yet.

Running back: Advantage Tech

Tashard Choice is a 1,000-yard rusher. Georgia hasn’t had a thousand-yarder since Musa Smith in 2002.

Place-kicker: Advantage Tech

If Brandon Coutu wasn’t injured, this would be different. But Georgia’s using its punter at the moment and Travis Bell has been solid if unspectacular.

Defensive line: Advantage Georgia

When healthy, the Dogs have one of the better front fours in the South. Tech gets most of its pressure from its linebackers. Georgia relies on its front four.

Linebackers: Advantage Georgia

Again, I’m leaning pretty hard on seniority and familiarity here, but the Dogs all-senior trio of Tony Taylor, Jarvis Jackson and Danny Verdun Wheeler have played a lot of football and have never lost to the Jackets. KaMichael Hall is a warrior for Tech and Philip Wheeler is a big-play waiting to happen. Very slight advantage.

Secondary: No advantage

I can’t find one at least. Both units are pretty good but neither is dominant. Giving up 237 against Duke doesn’t help Tech’s cause. But the way the Dogs looked against Vanderbilt and Kentucky and the second half against Tennessee doesn’t say much for them, either.

Punter: Advantage Tech

Another real close one but Durant Brook’s numbers are stellar –- 45.2-yard average, long of 63, 29 punts inside the 20 -– and the Yellow Jackets are No. 1 in the nation in net punting.

Returns: Advantage Georgia

The Dogs have gone the distance for touchdowns with three punts and a kickoff while Tech has none.

So that gives Tech the advantage in five areas and Georgia five. So that means the game will end in a tie and be decided in overtime, right? I’m not going to touch things like intangibles and coaching. I’ll let y’all handle that.

Suffice it to say, this ought to be a good one

QB Advantage to Ball and Tech? No wonder Vegas has UGA as a 2 point favorite…

Like I said before. I’ve not missed a Georgia Football game since 1964. Tech has revenge in mind, while the Dogs need to salvage a season and regain respect. I have always found that you could throw the record book out the window between these two teams, eventhough the Dogs win most of them. They are usually close. Dogs 24, Tech 21

Suffice it to say, this ought to be a good one.

In this game, pre-game analysis is pointless. When they tee it up you can just throw everything out the window. It will all depend on who brings what team and their level of motivation.

The one thing I DO know…it won’t be close. Everytime “they” say it will be, it ain’t! Mark my words…

Nice blog Chip…I hope it IS a “good one”, the right way. WOOF!

DO YOU REALLY THINK CHOICE IS BETTER THAN LUMPKIN? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME? ALL THREE BACKS AT UGA ARE BETTER THAN CHOICE! AS FOR QB, I’M GLAD THEY HAVE BALL AND WE HAVE STAFFORD, BECAUSE WITHOUT CJ, BALL WOULD BE THE WORST QB IN THE COUNTRY!!!

Dear Bloggers,

I took my nephew to Southlake Mall last night for photos with Santa. He got up on the lap and asked for a Calvin Johnson - Ga Tech jersey. That FAT BAST_RD! said I am sorry son, Santa is a Dawg Fan. He cried for two hours and broke my heart. I will never cheer for the Dawgs again. I will never go to Southlake again. I am also trying to get his butt fired! Tell Sonny to fix this! Go REGGIE BALL from now on for my whole family.

Advantage GT for QBs - Ball and Stafford throwing TDs for the Jackets! Sweet!

That is, when Stafford isn’t picking himself up from the turf every other play.

By Lane4411

November 21, 2006 05:26 PM | Link to this

The QB,which does not implode will in all probabilty, determine who wins. Stafford is a “baby”, and Ball has made minimal/if any progression in the last 4 yrs. Indicating, that Georgia receivers are inconsistent is a gross understatement - until last week could not catch a cold. Ball is terribly inconsistent. Johnson, is one of the best ever-imagine reception numbers if he had a QB. Game will not be determined on the ground-in my humble opinion. Mistakes will determine the winner.

Pick your poison!!!

I agree with Lane441, the QB position is a toss up. If Stafford plays like he did against Auburn, bye-bye bugs. If he plays like he did earlier in the season, the bugs will crush us. Reggie Ball has a tendency to wet his pants against the Dawgs, so while I agree with pretty much all of Chip’s other assessments, I don’t agree with this one. I think Stafford’s play is key. I also think the crowd noise/enthusiasm could play a crucial role. Goooooooo DAWGS!! Sending all of our best from the West Coast!

We have not had a 1000 yeard rusher because we rotate a lot of backs in to the lineup. WE definitely have the better running backs even without Thomas Brown. Tech plays in the ACC, look at all the all the teams in the SEC that are ranked compared to the ACC. If Tech played in the SEC they would never win a title.

Even Reggie with his bad play at times is better than a freshman Matthew “Pick” Stafford…..the guy is a freaking turnover machine and if he turns it over Saturday he will become the QB in the Mark Richt era to lose to Georgia Tech….and I think he will……he’s the most overrated Georgia player in decades. Take that Doggies….Go Jackets…….Vanderbilt…LOL.. Kentucky…LOL…..Hahahahahahahaha

By True Dawg

I dont think Ball is productive under pressure. If we get pressure on Ball he will choke, leaving Choice the game. Face it Bug fans he cant win you a game. He only rushed for 118 yards against Duke.

Stafford will continue his improvement in this game. The only reason Georgia’s backs dont have over 1000 yards is simple…we have 3. Choice is the main back.

Gooo Dawgs…..Sic em!!!!

November 21, 2006 06:20 PM | Link to this

La Jolla Dawg, you nailed it. Chip, I can’t believe that you don’t realize what happened in the AU game. Matthew Stafford had to go through what he did but his learnig curve was astounding and then it all came together. Anybody that thinks he hasn’t learned his lesson just hasn’t paid any attention. Will he make a mistake? Sure he will but think back to the Ky. game. He led the team on scoring drive and we were ahead untill the “D” let the ‘Cats have a long scoring drive. Then he threw an int. trying to bring the team back. No, the difference in the ball game Sat. will be the play of Matthew Stafford as the Dawg “Trigger Man”. I’ve said it earlier and I’m sticking with it, Dawgs by 15 and Stafford with 2 passing scores.

Chip,

You must have been watching a different Georgia team than me this year. One of the better front fours in the south. Give me a break! Surely you meant to say Georgia likes to get pressure with their front four. Yor saw what the possibilities were against Auburn. Lack of production from the front four has caused WM to get way too complicated for the ability and experience of the current linebackers and secondary. A good performance out of the front four would have given us another 10 or 11 win season. When two of the leading tacklers on the team are the safties, level one and level two on defense are not getting the job done.

I understand GT has a good team this year and Georgia’s been hot & cold (ok, mostly cold), but does anyone really see Georgia losing on Saturday? Last home game, an extra week to rest and think about it, extra week for the coaches to prepare… I guess we’ll see.

“I can’t find one at least. Both units are pretty good but neither is dominant. Giving up 237 against Duke doesn’t help Tech’s cause. But the way the Dogs looked against Vanderbilt and Kentucky and the second half against Tennessee doesn’t say much for them, either.”

Most of the 237 yards Tech gave up to Duke was done in the second half when the game was out of reach and/or against the second string. Duke’s regulars played the entire game.

Quarterback: even I thought Reggie played a good game last year, particularly with his feet, but I really believe Stafford is starting to show why he can eally be a special player

Tight End: Dawgs Martrez Milner is a heck of tight end and a hell of a young man, but he has to be more consistant catching the ball. If he does he becomes a huge advantage for the Dawgs

Offensive Line: Dawgs What was thought to be a weak spot has actually turned into a pretty good line

Wide Reciever: Tech Georgia does have talent at the position and have been holding onto the ball lately, but Calvin Johnson is the best Reciever in college football

Running Back: even Tashard choice has 1000 yards for tech and Georgia has lumpkin and Ware. UGA also has probably the best fullback in the country in Brannon Southerland

Place kicking: Tech With brandon Coutu the best kicker in the country out this is no contest. Big disadvantge for the DAWGS

Defensive Line: Dawgs Dawgs have a great tandem at D end and the tackles are solid with ray gant and jeff owens starting

Linebackers: Dawgs I think both are strong here, but the dawgs depth and leadership froom this position have to be an advantage

D Backs: Even Both teams have talent at this position, but the team with the best defensive backfield play in this game gain a key advantage

Punting: Tech Gordon Ely Kelso is a very good punter, but UGA has had some costly blocked punts this year

Returns: Dawgs With Mikey Henderson healthy again this could be a big advantage for UGA

Here are some slogans that the faculty over at the North Avenue Trade School / GTU / Bug Central are using to lure recruits to play football and basketball.

“The NATS School of Business: Helping 99.9% of GTU athletes get into Tech.”

“Georgia Tech: Where Ossama sends his best and his brightest to learn about nuclear energy, high explosives, and undercover surveilance of places like Washington DC and Atlanta!!!”

“GTU: Where you’ll have no problem finding time for studying or practicing because there isn’t one good looking girl on campus to distract you!”

“NATS: We made our stadium smaller to make sure less visiting fans can get in to boo you!”

“Bug Football: Our Athletics Director Guarantees Not Being Able to Win 10 Games Or Remain Competative Every Year!”

“GTU: Go to Georgia to see the World. Come to Tech to see the Galaxy! Exotic Locals! Vulcan! Klingon! Hoth!”

“Tech: Go where No Nerd Has Gone Before! The inside of a girl’s bedroom! (girl not included)”

What do y’all think? I think them are sure some good slogans! I only wish we UGA rednecks were smart like them bugs from GTU!

Even out here in LA, all the PAC 10 Football Fans are predicting a UGA win. Ball is the worst quarterback in the history of Tech. He is good for at least 2 picks and a well timed fourth down throw away. Dawgs win in a Romp. I can’t wait to hear all the whining on Monday. Maybe then the tech grads that work for me will actually be productive.

QB advantage to Tech?!?! They have the best weapon in college football and could only put up 7 on UNC. Johnson had less than 50 yards receiving because his QB is a complete and total idiot. Ball is awful. Four year starter or not, Stafford was a better QB last year than Reggie Ball. UGA has at least three QB’s better than Reggie Ball.

Lane4411 said it best, Mistakes will determine the winner. If Georgia limits its turnovers to 2 and receivers drop no more than 2, Dawgs win. If the receivers and QB revert back to their pre-Auburn games, then this will be another frustrating afternoon. My guess is they will revert back. I really hope not, but one great game on the heels of seven bad ones doesn’t exactly mark a trend.

Mark Richt is walking on the beach the night before UGA is to leave for its [Music City] bowl game, and he comes across this really ornate bottle lying in the sand. He picks it up and brushes the sand off and out pops a genie who tells Mark he’ll grant him one, and only one, wish. Mark thinks for a minute then says “You know, I’ve always been interested in great engineering feats. I’d like to have a bridge built from Athens, GA all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe, and it’d be called the Mark Richt Bridge.” The genie immediately starts to fret. “Mark, that would be nearly impossible, the sheer volume of concrete needed is prohibitive, the sea is thousands of feet deep in spots, lives would be lost… It simply can’t be done. You’ll have to think of something else - anything else, anything at all.” So Mark thought for another minute, then he said with great enthusiasm “Then I want to beat Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas next season, bring the national championship home to Athens, and prove to all the world that a flashy offense with a great QB like Stafford wins championships.” The genie didn’t even hesitate a single second before he said “Do you want that bridge two-lane or four?”

By Buck Cochran in the NW

November 22, 2006 02:36 PM | Link to this

Buckless, no, I’ve just checked his backgrounf and starting last spring really studied his progess very closely. While others have done nothing but point out mistakes, I noted those but watched closely to see if he was learning and progressing. I saw the step backward but I’d see 2 steps forward. Buckless, I’ll be repeating myself but the AU game was a perfect example. People talked about the 2 fumbles. 1 of the dumbles was a bad play because he didn’t go down. The other one I didn’t hold that against him at all because he had nothing but grass in front og him and the AU guy just made a great play. Or another example. The SC. game on Sat. in Columbia. The starter goes down and he’s called off the bench to take over in only the 2nd time he ever had a Dawg uniform on. He throws 3ints. True, but, there was one to MoMass that was as close to pass iterference as anything I’ve ever seen, 1 a horrible pass and the other onr the receiver let the other guy catch it. So you had on the record 3 ints. but people forgot that he led the team to a win. Showed he was a “Cool Hand Luke”, when he’s on his own 3 yd. line and audibles to a QB draw, picks 15 yds. and a 1st down. Those are the type of things that have me convinced that the young man is as good a freshman QB that I’ve ever seen and I haven’t mentioned the passes he’s completed. Sorry everyone, I went a little long . Won’t happen again. Did I answer your question, Buckless?
