UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Jake Scott’s homecoming
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There is an absolutely fantastic story about Jake Scott, one of Georgia’s all-time greats, in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-spjakescott19nov19,0,3570478.story).
If you haven’t read it, do. It’s long, but worth your while.
Scott, a safety who was a Georgia All-American in 1968 and a Super Bowl MVP with the Miami Dolphins, has lived most of his post-football life in relative obscurity. But Sun-Sentinel writer Dave Hyde tracked down the “reckless recluse” in Hanalei, Hawaii, and got the first extensive interview with him since 1979.
This is particularly timely considering Scott will be making a rare return to Athens this week. He is serving as honorary captain for the Bulldogs for the coin toss before Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech. This is noteworthy considering Scott has turned down invitations to Dolphins’ Super Bowl team reunions and Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Carter Strickland’s trying to find out how and when Georgia tracked down Scott, and how it talked him into coming back for this huge game.
Reading about Scott got me to thinking about Georgia’s great players over the years. Vince Dooley once said Scott was the best overall athlete who ever played for him, the incomparable Herschel Walker included. That’s a pretty strong statement considering some of the incredible athletes that have come through Athens.
I could see a good argument being made for Champ Bailey, from more recent years, being Georgia’s greatest all-time athlete, or perhaps Hines Ward. From days gone by, maybe it’d be Billy Henderson or Charley Trippi or Zippy Morrocco. I’m talking about guys who were obviously good in football but would be good at any sport they focused on.
So what do you think? Is Jake the greatest of them all? Do you expect him to get a warm reception despite the relative cool with which he left Georgia for the Canadian Football League after his junior season? And, of course, will his presence catapult the Dogs to victory over Tech?

If MR has any smarts at all, which he does, he’ll just show some game flim of Scott putting people down and he won’t have to say a word. Jake Scott was a DAWGS DAWG!!!!! I’m very happy he’s coming back for the game. IMO, he’s at least one of the top 5 Dawg players of all time. Be nice if he spoke to the team because he wouldn’t mess around. Talk about “tell it like it is”, Jake Scott would be the man.

There is no question that Jake was great at his position, but could he play another if necessary. I guess that we will never know, but I did have the privilige of watching Herschel play linebacker at Johnson County High, and he was probably better at that position than at running back, if you can believe it. How can you think that anyone is better than another, based on competitions, schemes, talent, etc.? Anyway, what about Bill Stanfill, Fran Tarkenton, Mike “Moonpie” Wilson, Joel “Cowboy” Parrish, David Pollack, Terry Hoage, Ben Zambiasi,….?

I know I always looked up to him at the Athens YMCA. He was a few years older than me but learned his football from Coburn Kelley just like all boys did in that era. I even remember him being a leader (unpaid aids on the summer YMCA trips to Florida, Canada, and California) with Kelley. What a super athlete!

Chip, I like your description “reckless recluse”. Fits Jake to a T (and that’s not a T as in TECH!!) Jake was a tremedous talent, grew up in Athens and was a product of the Athens Y that produced so many good athletes in that day, smart, and certainly a free spirit! I had the privilege of watching Trippi, Sinkwich, Morocco, Scott, Bailey and Walker etc., and playing Y and HS with Tarkenton. I would have to say that Herschel was the best college back I have ever seen and I would put he and Jake on an even par for ability. Trippi was a complete player, offense and defense, and a great player. In short, I would prefer to pick them all, remember their individual efforts, and just be glad that I’M A GEORGIA BULLDOG and feel privileged to have seen them all. Many more memories ahead friends. Let’s enjoy it all!

Why is God’s name would anyone in their right mind trust that piece of sh!t Carter Strickland to find out any pertenant information regarding one of UGA’s all-time favorite sons?
Chip, I’d feel much more confident and much better if they’d have given you this assignment.
Whatever the AJC does, don’t have that retard speak to Scott. If he does, we may never hear from Jake Scott again!

This is like picking the best guitarist or drummer ever. Crossing eras, styles of play, two way, etc.
It has to be Herschel. Champ Baily did not have world class 100 meter speed like Herschel.
What about Domanique? Are we talking best athlete or best football player?
I never had the privledge to see Jake play in collage, obviously I did in the pros and he was one of the best players on the best pro team ever. Lest we forget Jimmy Poulos or Andy Johnson in addition to all those listed above?
Only Herschel or Domanique stand out in my mind.

Only thing that Carter does is try and get in those not so subtle digs at Matthew Stafford. He’ll do it with others but I’m not kidding, the article he wrote about Tech ,Stafford and the blitz he again left an undercurrent of negativity about the freshman. When I see Stafford take it right on the chin get up and go again as if nothing had happened I think about Jake Scott, Terry Hogue and other tough guys from the past…..True DAWGS! Like Joe T.

Herschel is hard to top. All American at Football, top five in sprint NCAA track and field and ripped off the door of a wrecked car that happened as he was out jogging and rescued the trapped young lady. And then like the Lone Ranger he jogged off into the sunset. “Who was that young man in the jogging suit? I don’t know but he was wearing silver britches.”

During Jake Scott tenure at UGA, I had good relationships with several coaches at UGA. The player each one expressed as being “unreal”, “true All-American”, “ther best I ever coached” and more adjective comments about Jake Scott. I remember the first game he play at Auburn, he was “unbelieveable” player. I watch him play with my mouth open and foaming at his athletic ability. GLAD HE CAME BACK, HE IS THE BEST OF ALL DAWGS.

As for my so-called negative posts, I’ve only been negative when there needs to be negative.
So as it applies to Carter Strickland, Joe T, or Willie Martinez’s performance as DC, you’re right, I’ve been negative, because there is nothing positive to write about those subjects.
But you say that you don’t read the blogs, so how would you know the whole 9 months of blogs I’ve written?
And Red, I’ve bled red&black since I was born. That’s 46 years of living, breathing Bulldogs. That’s 46 years of Dooley, Scott, Goff, Belue, Walker, Crumley, Peterson, Zeier, Ward, Bobo, Edwards, Greene, Pollack, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, Shockley, Lump, Stafford, Silver Britches, White Britches, Silver Britches, Red Britches, Silver Britches, Black Britches, and Silver Britches.
Oh yeah, and that ugly-@$$ black stripe on the helmet.
I’ve seen it all, heard it all, done it all, and been here for it all.
And I have not seen a worse DC for this team than Willie, and that includes Kines. I’ve not seen a worse example of legacy-ism at Georgia than Joe T. And I have not, without a doubt, seen a worse excuse for a journalist/columnist/writer at this paper than Carter Strickland.
He is a piece of sh!t, and you can call that bad language, or whatever… I just call it fact.

Every 2-4 years, someone special straps it up and is a part of your team. A standout at different times, different eras, different positions. Jake Scott exemplified the safety position outstandingly. UGA fans should be proud of the effort he gave. As a member of the SEC, I was and still am appreciative of what I saw of him in college as well as the pros…Now, whatever happened to Fran the Man…?

After reading the story, it is hard to not wish that a player like Jake Scott wasn’t more involved with UGA and Georgia football.
Far be it from me to tell Jake Scott how to live his life, because it sounds like he is living it on his terms. I have been to that area of the world and can hardly blame him for not wanting to leave.
That being said, this is one of those rare opportunities for Georgia fans to give sincere appreciation to one of our own. I don’t know how many more opportunities that we’ll have to let Jake know that once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog.
Admittedly, I am not always the best Georgia fan about getting in my seat 15 minutes before the game; however, for this week, I don’t mind coming 15 minutes early for a man that came 15 hours to see Athens and his Dawgs. And you can rest assured that I will help give the standing ovation that he deserves.

Jake visits Atlanta regularly and he’ll be in Athens Saturday. He isn’t really reclusive at all, nor is he reckless. I talked with him a few days ago. He’s very sociable and keeps up with friends and former teamates. He has always been a free spirit and just doesn’t have any real desire to talk with reporters. Who in their right mind would?

When I was a freshman at UGA (76) I heard a great story about Jake Scott. You know how the coliseum is formed under two criss crossing arches that run all the way to the ground? Legend has it that, on a dare, Jake rode a motorcycle right up the column and over the top of the coliseum. The bars that are now placed at the roofline were put there because of Jake Scott. Don’t know if it’s true, but I love the story.

Jake Scott was great as many other athletes who played for UGA. It would be difficult to compare. Most of you are not old enough to have seen Charley Trippi play. At least at that time against the competition he would get my vote. He was a great quadruple threat (running, passing, punting, and defensive back). As good as he was on offence, He was better on defence. In the proffessional he was all pro on defence.

Having lived in Lipscomb Hall (then the jock dorm) with Jake I can tell you he was some “piece of work”. Not only was he a free spirit, he was the greatest safety I have ever seen play college football. Jake had a natural instinct for the ball. He could cover anybody and talk about run support, Jake would come up and just deliver a blow on anybody with the ball, he was a big hitter. A Jack Tatum type hitter (former Raider All Pro).
I remember when he signed his contract in Canadian football, Jake bought a red Corvette and drove it into the parking lot at Lipscomb. We all went down to see the car. Jake was so proud he never had had a nice car. He announced how even Vince didn’t have a car like this. We all loved to watch him play and enjoyed being around him.
By the way, Don Shula today will tell you the best Safety he ever coached was Jake Scott.
I will be at the game on Sat. and I will be one of the thousands that will stand and cheer for Jake. I hope I get a chance to talk to him I will make the effort.

Those that attended the Ga/Tenn game in ‘68, witnessed one of the all-time greatest efforts by a Bulldog. Jake’s punt return for a touchdown was a sight to behold…and one that we all thought would take the Vols down. Unfortunately, this was before video instant replay and Tenn tied the game on a disputed two point reception. Regardless, Jake Scott won the day for me.

Swim Dawg 68-Great story. Here’s another that many may not be familiar with… The next time you go to the Colisiem, look at the gates that block access to the arcs that criss-cross on top of the Colisieum. I bet many people have said how easy it would be to climb those arhces all the way to the top of the Colisieum. The reason those gates are there is because Jake Scott once rode a motorcycle from the street, right up onto those arcs, and came down the other side! True story.

Jake was one of the all-time greats. Before his junior year it is said Dooley might try him at quarterback, but Mike Cavan came through. Ran a punt back against Tenn. for 90 yards and intercepted a pass with one hand the same day. Returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns one night against kentucky in lkexington. A pure athelete.

I have said for years that JAAKE SCOTT was the “NO NAME” in the “NO NAME DEFENSE” of the DOLPHINS winning years and Super Bowl Champions. He was the “ONLY” Defensive player to have been named MVP of the Super Bowl until recently and that was another Georgia Boy from Albany who won that distinction. TWO defensivepalayers out of all the Super Bowls that have been played. Now that is somthing, isn’t it?
Jake Scott’s number 13 was given to MORENO, which was a slap in the face (spit in the face?)- Moreno never went to the Super Bowl with his Team exept to WATCH THE GAME; Jake went to PLAY THE GAME and won by GOD! Moreno has a statue of him wearing the Number 13, which JAKE wore as “NO NAME DEFENSE” - He was the “NO NAME DEFENSE” you can’t name any of the others off the top of your head - but you can damn sure name JAKE SCOTT… Yes, he was an ALL AMERICAN at UGA, he was ALL PRO in the NFL, and also in the CFL. He was the epitomy of a ALL PRO SAFETY. I do not blame him for not attending the Dolphins affairs. I had previously contacted the Miami herald aout their seemingly ignoring of Jakes great career with the Dolphins and they said he was a BAD guy, they did not like him, for he did not kiss their a*.

I heard the same story as a freshman in 1973 about Jake riding the motorcycle across the arches. I also remember watching him play against Tennessee in 1978 when our Dawgs got hosed. As for greatest players there have been many great players at Georgia, I played with Mike Wilson, Matt Robinson and Ben Zambisi. I saw Bill Stanfill, Andy Johnson, Hershel and others play. My father lifelong GA fan and grandfather, who graduated from GT, told me about Charlie Trippi and Frank Sinkwich. My grandfather hated these guys but respected them and admitted they were great players as they played both offense and defense. With this said I hope the fans in attendance will give Jake the Great a standing ovation in appreciation for the many great plays he made while playing at GA and in the CFL and NFL. Go Dawgs
