UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Lassoing the Cowboys

Grabbing Oklahoma State as the opener is a strong move by Georgia. The Cowboys are decent this year but will have their best year in several years next season. Most of the talent is young and they will have experience in big games on the road.

The last time OSU went on a big nonconference road trip was in 2004 when it beat UCLA in the opener. The quarterback in that game, Donovan Woods, will be the starting safety against Georgia. But year in and year out, OSU has to travel to either Texas or Oklahoma, so it knows what it is like to play in a serious venue and probably will not come in intimidated.

But props to Georgia for stepping up in scheduling. With this game Georgia will have OSU, Arizona State, Colorado and Louisville, in addition to Georgia Tech, as nonconference opponents in the next four seasons. That’s pretty decent.

Then there is the always the away game at Florida. But next year there is a bye before Florida. There is not one before Florida in 2008. Georgia cannot do much about that. The SEC sets the conference schedule.

The SEC ALWAYS seems to give Florida a bye before the GA/FL game—at least in recent memory. Why is that?

Carter, Ok St. is your old stomping ground if I’m not mistaken. You must be pretty exciting about them coming to Athens and possibly winning next year, right?

Good choice. Let’s help our strength of schedule by scheduling quality opponents. I am tired of seeing Western Kentucky, UAB, and Troy on our schedule even though we need a few prep games. I think scheduling more games in the Midwest and West will help recruit nationally. Good move! Go Dawgs!!!

I am excited about the schedule over the next few years. I think that we have made some great efforts to get some good teams coming to Athens. I still wish that we could find a way to get a home/home with Notre Dame, USC, Michigan, Texas, Ohio State, or Oklahoma. I think games like that would go a long way to establishing us as a national program and not just an elite southeast and east coast team. I would love to be able to recruit west of the Mississippi, not just steal one or two players now and again. Imagine a schedule with the like of Texas, Ga. Tech, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, and Alabama on it. Wow!

Always a good thing to play quality schools instead of all of these “girly” teams that do not prove anything and falsley propel us in the polls. If we are suppose to be one of the upper teams in the SEC then we need to have the “NADS” to play somebody worth a crap. Kudos to finding some formidable opponents that will surely test our ability. CMR we will give you this year as a “rebuilding year, but you better make the necessary moves to make us a force again or else we might look pretty silly against non-conference teams with some mo-jo.

I guess this is better than nothing, but UGA needs to become respected as a school that isn’t afraid to schedule top-tier non-conference opponents EVERY year. While this is an improvement over UAB or WKy, OK St is not top-tier. I’d love to see a Michigan, Nebraska, Texas, So Cal, Ohio St, Notre Dame, Oklahoma or Penn St on the schedule EVERY year. These teams aren’t strong every year, but they’re strong MOST years. I know all the apologist-Dooley-faithful say it can’t be done, but if Evans, Adams & Richt want it bad enough, it can happen. And not 10 years from now. And for those apologists, why not ask the players who they’d rather be playing: UAB and Western KY, or Notre Dame and So Cal. If it were up to them, we wouldn’t be playing teams that should be out-classed before the game’s even played.

patsy schedule………..you should know this by now, but the reason we schedule like we do is a) until a couple of years ago the 11 game schedule didn’t allow us to. we’d have to play 4 home games only because we’d have to play one of those other big games—-mich, ohio st, notre dame—at their place every other year. having only 4 home games isn’t enough. teams expect a home and home. it’s all about the revenue.

on a 12 game schedule, you can add an extra game with a bigger school and then work out the details later on when to visit their home stadium. all in all it’s a monetary thing so you don’t screw yourself out of a lot of revenue by losing a home game.

It is time ladies and gentlemen for nominations for the exalted “All Blog Team”.

For Defensive Ends, my two favorite non-Dawg fans, Gen Neyland and Wareagle. GTDC you get the rover spot. You don’t really support us but your responses have been witty and not hateful,

My pick for QB in an upset is Altamaha, you made us remember what the game is all about. And my pick for fullback, the man I know can take a handoff an pick it up on fourth and one or take it in the endzone is Buck Cochran in the great North West. The Samoan always anchors the line.

Time is getting short people, the nominations please.

honset abe, if you watching the Rutgers-Louisville game, remember what I blog about a good defensive team would KO Cardinals, well you see it tonight. Louisville might win, but Rutgers is the best team with its defense as in the SEC.

We have tried to schedule better teams, recently Notre Dame and Michigan. They wouldn’t even discuss it with us. People think UGA wants a bunch of Patsies, but thats not the truth. I wish one of the AJC writers would research and do an article or two on the subject. It prolly wouldn’t matter though, the same people that think we won’t schedule better teams are the same ones that think CMR is heading to Miami. Just ignorance.

I can honestly say, I like all UGA bloggers, plus Gen. Neyland and couple of Bugs. My most disappointing blogger is BuLLdawg, he did`nt have the guts as other dawgs stood up and faced the hurt. I miss Robert blog and auburnsux. They really turned off by Auburn, but I enjoyed their comments. cuz, zoo. althamadawg, Buck, Hunk, birddawg, abe, reasonableDawg, Conyersdawg, abd others I think think at this late hour. I will be leaving for the Plains tomorrow and will blog after the game and then slow down and let you all slug it out with your rival Tech. I hope I have not bore all of you with Auburn and other off UGA subjects, you have been very nice and respectable this past year.. I really enjoyed it…good luck against Tech.Last, I really think we have a shot at Caleb King as of today…if not best to him at UGA.

question. where would texas be today if they had played north texas instead of ohio state at the beginning of the season? that’s right. #2 in the country and a virtual deadlock to play for the national championship.

i don’t mind playing some of these middling bcs conference teams, but anybody who lobbies for tougher games than what we’re getting is just dumb.

I saw the question asked but I never saw anyone answer, Why do the Gators get there bye week before the Dawgs every year? the last 17 years the Gators only had to play two time before the Dawgs and the UGA smoked them both times (97-04) so why is this going on every year for the most part?

war… i hear ya.. good points.. louisville couldn’t handle a good d. but last nights game only confirmed my feelings that the big east is a legitimate conference….i see the big east being clearly head and shoulder above the acc this year.. but lets say clemson only had one loss they would be considered for the BCS title game.. if rutgers beats west virginia, which i dont’ think will happen.. then they should go to the national championship game.. it’s the system we have.. so we just need to live with it.

gl war … i hope it is at least an entertaining game !

Cuz - I humbly accept the bid to play in the blog bowl. I’m getting older and consequently fatter so I may grow into a linebacker for next season.

Nominations

BuLLdawg for the sideline reporter (everyone else is using women, so why not us).

JamesD for cornerback - he stays on the sides and jumps the topic when it comes his way.

Carter for the tackling dummy. “Is he wearing 15 on his jersey or is it IS for Ignorant Slut??!??”.

I’m sure GREG will volunteer for “center”.

Cuz for Captain and Middle Linebacker.

Can we get kegs instead of gatorade coolers at practice????

Couple more nominations

Phatt Phil for nose gaurd - I hear he goes side-line to side-line……literally!

Kalamazoo - for Free Safety - he covers ground all the way up to Michigan, so why not all the way to the endzone?

Bill King for the “get back” coach on the sidelines.

Right on….As much as we would love to schedule some big out of conference opponents the other team has to agree to play as well. I heard we were courting Notre Dame and Michigan for some sort of match up and they said no thanks. I would love to see us at least play BCS conference opponents instead of Western KY or UAB. Damon Evans has already proven that he is looking to schedule more challenging opponents. That doesn’t mean the other teams want to play us. Or that they can fit UGA in their schedule. I love that we are playing OSU. I am already looking forward to the first game next year when I hope we will be a much improved team. We just plain stink right now. Good thing we aren’t playing them this year.

Even with a bye week before Florida, the Gators will still spank the dogs! It’s not about the bye week before the game, it’s just the fact that UF plays a JV Football team in Jacksonville. OK sorry…not JV, maybe a scout team. Ah, who am I kidding…it’s a JV team.

Love you to Greg and all dawg bloggers, its been fun as we “whine” down the season..abe, I agree with you on Big 8 and ACC, they are getting a SEC taste of knocking each other off, when high in the polls and have to be downsided.Rutgers put the holy roly on them second half and proved defense is the man…This is Auburn lapse this season except LSU and florida, no defense, you will see when Lumpkin hits the stretch play.I would bet my house CMR game plan is going to be run first and throw when necessary…GO TIGERS and Thanks for letting me blog with you, I hope Robert and auburnsux are ok, they don`t like Auburn, but are fun.

War Eagle - if you are a subscriber to Scout.com, go to the New York page and go to prospects. Click on Bo Harris and watch his new video. The word I’m getting is that he will be the Ronnie Brown back at Auburn. Good kid and is still getting better. I talked to him in the spring and he had put on 15 pounds and cut his time down into the low 4.4 range. The video proves it.

Cuz, you’re full of sh!t. Evidently the good doctors didn’t remove enough of it from you. You might want to ask to get your money’s worth next time. Make whatever excuses you want for UGA’s non-conference schedule for the past 40 years. WAHHHH we haven’t had enough time to schedule a good team. WAHHHH we won’t have enough revenue without a home game every other year. WAHHHH we’ll lose and not have a chance at a NC. Evans, Adams & Richt (the Three Stooges) can find some top-tier team that will do home-and-home if they want to badly enough. In the meantime cry your own sorry a* out of this blog.

Wow - obviously, we’re getting close to the holidays because everyone is being so nice. Either that or some sort of filter is keeping the yahoos out.

I agree with Cuz - kind of hard to schedule the big daddys with only 9 month’s notice. Plus - the almighty dollar prohibits anyone from putting together the killer shedules that folks like Notta Damn has had in the past. Personally, I’m more interested in playing OK State than the Beavers anyway. Except for the opportunity to tell the PAC-10 to shut the hell up.

That whole Florida getting the week off before GA/fla every year while UGA rarely does has always amazed me. When we have to play 3 or 4 games without a break before going to J-ville is one thing but 8?! Ridiculous.

Miss Cline, your writing opened you up to the attack. Let me get this straight. You can attack the team, the athletic department’s scheduling and the fans but we can’t fire back. Okay, now I know the rules. I will try to be nicer to you, you Sweet Old Bob.

Oh and I never made any of those excuses you credit me with, I thought it was good to get a sometimes decent team with less than 9 months to the opener. Maybe you should read what I wrote.

Oh by the way, my team is the Dawgs, what is yours?
