UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Scheduling scuttlebutt
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After not getting embarrassed at Georgia, Western Kentucky is so confident it can hang with Division I-A that it decided to make the move.
The Hilltoppers will try and reclassify as soon as the 2007-08 season, so maybe the Bulldogs’ scheduling problems are over. Just grab WKU. Hey, go even one step further and get that home and home done now before the ’Toppers become a hot commodity. Maybe they won’t back out like Oregon State did.
Actually, the best scheduling rumor out there was floated by another Northwest team. Idaho is trying to get out of its opener with Southern Cal and supposedly was trying to get Georgia to take its place. Unfortunately for all those who wanted to see West Coast football, Georgia assistant athletic director for scheduling, Arthur Johnson, said a recently there was no truth to the rumor and that Southern Cal hasn’t come up in any conversations.
Southern Cal already has Notre Dame and Nebraska as non-conference opponents next season. And the Pac-10 plays all other teams in the conference so it isn’t very likely it would schedule Georgia. Arkansas again? Given USC’s success against the Hogs, maybe.
Georgia? Doubt it.

It will probably be one of the Florida schools, FAU or FIU, or a Sun Belt team. Although I did like the rumor of playing Rugers at the Dome.

I had to read that 4 times to figure out who wanted to play us, Idaho, or Usc. I now see its Idaho wanting us to play USC. Whew! That was a difficult read.
No, I doubt USC would do that considering they would have to return the favor a couple of years fom now. We might would as I think we are going to need some instant credibility next year.

You’re right, the Dome is a bad idea. It seats less than Sanford, I’m pretty sure. At this point, how about Brookwood or Parkview??? Just kidding! Either way, I’ll be at the home opener as long as it’s here.

I agree, this is very poorly written (Is Carter at happy hour?). At first it sounds like Idaho is trying to back out to play us. Then further in its all about USC trying to play us. Carter’s Quote: “Idaho is trying to get out of its opener with Southern Cal and supposedly was trying to get Georgia to take its place.” Which is it?
Can we please get another beat writer AJC?? Carter stinks! Bring back Schlabaugh!!
P.S. Didn’t we beat the crap out of W. KY?? (not that it means anything) What game were you watching Carter?

What would be helpful for us fans reading this is to know which schools have an opening in their schedule. It would seem that a ‘reporter’ could track that down. Can’t Arthur Johnson give you and thus us a short list? Naming schools that we would like to play or think we would end up playing that may already have 12 games scheduled seems to be a waste of time.

Yeah, the whole thing doesn’t make any sense. What does USC’s Pac-10 schedule have to do with whether or not they would choose to play UGA?

you say USC wouldn’t agree to this because they would have to travel to GA? Uh SC isn’t afraid to travel outta conference, next year they’re at Nebraska and at Notre Dame. This year they’re at Arkansas, in ‘09 they’re at Ohio St and at Notre Dame, They’ll play anybody anywhere. It’s doubtful Georgia would agree to come play USC because the Dawgs haven’t played a non conference team outside the South in something like 30 or 40 years.

Carter, my advise to you is not to buy anything on credit. With your inability to translate a thought to paper, I doubt you will be in your present line of work much longer. You are a sad commentary on the fishwrappers view of UGA. I can only guess that nepotism assisted in your hiring.

Carter, you are an idiot and cannot write anything interesting to save your life. You have nothing of note to share, and most blogs, websites and podcasts have much more up-to-date information than you do. The AJC sucks for keeping you around. In a long line of UGA reporters, you are clearly at the bottom.

We always play a lousy schedule…bring back Clemson or start scheduling some legit nonconference games. No more I-AA or barely I-A teams.

GA Southern would be a good opener. Pulling for Vandy to take down the Gators today. UGA is 6-3; lost one game they were supposed to win and two they weren’t expected to win anyway. Anybody that watched UT play in their first game this year could see UT wasn’t going to be a cake walk for the dogs. As for UF I’m not sure what it is going to take to get that monkey off our back. It’s a long shot but UGA could still run the table the rest of this year. I believe from all of this we will see some changes next year. Leadership was lacking from the top down this year. When CMR was given his new contract Adams said he expected this program to compete at a higher level. I would think 6-3 including a homecoming loss to Vandy has drawn some attention already. Ten games into the season and not having an established team doesn’t speak well of the coaches nor send a postive message to recruites. Having four top ten QBs on the rositer but none that are ready to play is a real shame. UGA is not short on tallent, they are under utilized to the point of dieing on the bench. What this team lacks is attitude. UGA needs to hire the Marines To come run a 6 week boot camp this summer for its team to show them what attitude is all about. It would also have to teach the head coach to get rid of the “IF WORD” if we do this we mite win and change to: “when we step on their face with a hob-nailed boot the world will know we are for real.” While I think not red-shirting Stafford was a mistake, I believe he will step up to the plate and during the off season he will work with the receivers until they can catch the ball with their eyes closed. He now knows this is his team. He will grow from this season and we wil see a different team next year. GO DAWGS!!!
By the way Carter, are you a freelance reporter writing for the AJC that is paid by Steve Spurrier?

Good point George. What I meant was, I’ll be at the season opener as long as its here. I think it would be a great idea to continue playing Clemson every year as the opener. I heard Richt mention in a press conference that he likes to schedule a I-AA team each year. It’s great to have a win each year, but I’d rather see UGA take a risk and play an opponent from a BCS conference each year, in addition to Tech. As a side note, I agree that Carter should do some research and give us some suggestions that are logical. I was under the impression that Idaho wanted to play us.

Kalamazoo - I heard something last night on CSS in regards to our conversation last week about the coaching vacancies. Butch Davis will be the #1 choice at UNC, but the second choice would be Paul Johnson of Navy/Georgia Southern. I was not aware, but Johnson was the OC at Hawaii and likes to throw the ball, but runs the option to level the playing field. They also said Greg Shiano to Miami.

war eagle.. i wonder if you’ve changed your opinion of the SEC… once again..i’ll be the first to say the SEC is full of players that are going to play on sundays… better yet a ton of guys that will go on the first day of the draft.. yet the powerhouses are struggling… florida has a hard time gettin rid of vandy.. alabama (not a powerhouse, but one of the better teams in the SEC) loses to miss state… and georgia loses to ? who? kentucky? auburn plays an inferior opponent and wins by 27.. (and you know they are trying to gain as many style points as they can) … since we can both agree that the players are the best… where does the fault lie? i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again… in fact i believe after watching the tenn game… the best team in the SEC is LSU, but they already have two losses… who do i blame for that? les miles.. the coaches in the SEC are extremely overrated… they bring absolutely nothing innovative to the table..on both offense and defense.. and their teams consistently under-perform…

honest abe, I agree with you and disagree with you. First inferior team auburn should have hanged on points, well evidently you are not aware of CTT coaching style. I was at the game and saw it myself, with a 13-0 lead the #3 RB was getting plays plus half OL was down the depth chart. We had a # 4 true freshman RB who gain 156 yards on 26 carries against Tulane, which is good as Bammer. He had 15 carries for 96 yartds Sat. abe it could been 50+, its not CTT style, BCS or NO BCS. He graduated from Ark. State too.. Second, I do agree with you andhave stated from the Auburn game LSU ibest in the SEC. We beat them honest, but they crippled us for 3 games. There is more parity in the SEC today than ever before because southern states especially Fl, GA and LA. have extraordinary athletes. You have to coach them when you they come aboard which i believe SEC coaching is at its prime with exception of Bammer. Do you see how much Tenn. was beat up after LSU, check Fl. they are just hardnose. No, abe, my mind is still SEC.Would SEC be weaker if UGA beat Auburn and Tech beat UGA??

The 4 Losses to TN-VANDY-FL-KY have been caused by [1] the collapse of the defense in the 2nd half of the season, [2] missing critical field goals and extra points and [3] FUMBLES, not interceptions. TN-VANDY-FL-KY GOT 42 PTS OFF OF LUMPKIN, RAILEY AND TERANINSKY TURNOVERS, WHILE THEY GOT ZERO POINTS OFF OF STAFFORD INTERCEPTIONS. Why blame a freshman for a senior class that has collapsed on both defensive and offensive lines. Stafford’s interceptions resulted in zero points for KY and zero for FL, Vandy, TN. He has 9 interceptions in 5 games but they have resulted in zero points to the 4 teams that beat us. The defense has given up 144 points in the last 5 games [29 pts/game] and we have lost 4 out of 5 games. In our first 5 wins, the defense only gave up only 24 pts total. How can you ever win if you are giving up 29 pts a game. If it keeps up, AUBURN AND TECH games will be over by the end of the 1st Quarter. The offense is scoring enough points [24 per game] to be 8-2 or 9-1 if the defense had not fallen apart. Against KY, the defense gave up a game-winning-drive again, just like Vandy, after Stafford engineered the go-ahead touchdown. The key point of the game was when GA was down 17-14 with 8 mins to go and Stafford engineered a 83 yd scoring drive and ate up 5 ½ mins of time to put us ahead 20-14. Then Andy Bailey missed the Extra Point for his 7th missed points for the day [2 other missed FGs] All the defense had to do was stop a 70 yd drive over 11 plays to win the game with 3 mins 40 sec left in the game. Instead KY goes 70 years on 11 plays eating up chunks of turf at 6, 11, 5 , 14, 9, 6, 7, 8, 1 [for a 1st down], 3 [for a TD] leaving only .59 seconds. Stafford only had 59 seconds to go 63 yds and the odds of an interception is likely. This loss lies at the feet of the DEFENSE, not Stafford
