UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Is the defense legit?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia coach Mark Richt and everyone else have praised the defense for its inspired play against Florida. That’s great and all, but why did it take the this long to play inspired?
Yeah, the Bulldogs were good on that side of the ball in the first three games — wins over Western Kentucky, South Carolina, UAB. But this was supposed to be a team dominated by defensive play throughout the season. Nurture the offense, depend on the defense … that was the theory to start the season.
So what are the theories out there? Coaching? If so, why? Where do improvements need to be made? Personnel? Who should have been demoted or promoted?
And, most importantly, will this new-found inspirational play last for the defense? If you think it will, why? What leads you to believe it wasn’t just a one-game wonder against a team Georgia has little trouble getting up for?

I hope it wasn’t a fluke, but the players on the D who are playing out of position (Miller) or who just plain ole aren’t that good (Battle)will still be playing. I hope the D proves me wrong, but I think Kentucky scores a lotta points this weekend. Kentucky has consistently scored 20-30 points a game against us the last 10 years - we have just scored more; the same thing we will have to do this year in order to win.
Improper utilization of personnel in gameplanning is the biggest problem; putting the wrong players in the wrong situations where their strengths aren’t utilized, and even, their weaknesses more easily exploited - ie: linebackers, such as Miller, trying to cover wideouts versus Tennessee.
Call me pessismistic, but I think the (defensive) game against FLA was just as much about their failure to execute (droppped passes, fumbles, interceptions, though not as many as us) was what kept the game so close.

this is a very talented and athletic defense, theres no reason why they shouldnt be able to be dominating, it comes down to gameplan and execution

Clearly Danny Verdun Wheeler was made some kind of scapegoat after the Ole Miss game. He did miss some tackles while playing MLB for the first time. He then did not set foot on the field from scrimmage vs. Tennessee and very little vs. Miss St. He played the 4th quarter vs. Florida. Brandon Miller plays upright and stiff. He got blew up by Miss. St. freshman TB on the goal line. Tra Battle and Kelin Johnson have missed dozens of tackles all season long and never get pulled. I once observed Battle order CJ Byrd off the field when he was sent in to replace him. Why the double standard with Verdun Wheeler? Missed tackles, poor pursuit angles, weak coverage skills; poor playing, poor coaching or both????

I was just naming examples; I think they are numerous, but Miller was just the first to come to mind since he was a DE in high school and weighs over 250, trying a linebacker experiment that seems to have failed to me. But, there is plenty of blame to go around for the lack of success during this season thus far. Trust me, I really hope they turn it around, but…

I think we made a good showing on D and played a little over our head ( base that on what we’ve seen all year) I do think we have some coaching concerns and some players that are not up to our standards YET. Without a pass rush and the DB’s we have, we are suspect to give up 50 to any good team on any Saturday. As I’ve blogged before, this program brings in tons of money for the entire athletic Dept. and MR and this team live in a fish bowl for many reasons other than wins & losses. You can’t take anything from the first five years, but I am concerned about depth, and that fla.& tenn. have gotten their act together (meyer & cutcliff ). We need lineman bad !

Let’s get something straight about young Stafford; I want him to be the best QB in history like evryone else, but he was 13 for 33 Saturday… now give him the 5 drops, that makes him 18 for 33 with a few interceptions. The 2 TDs we got came off of turnovers that put us in good field positions… no sustained drives. The best call the kid made was to audible to a QB keeper for a TD. So for every dropped pass, he threw 3 more that were either incomplete or intercepted. Yeah, it was all JoeT’s fault…

Defense definitely hasn’t been perfect this year, but some of that is a product of poor offensive play. You can’t really expect your defensive stats (especially scoring) to look that good when your offense averages 4 or 5 turnovers a game. I wonder how differently we’d be talking about the defense if the offense hadn’t forced them to play with their backs against the wall from turnovers in our own territory?

Hey Hunk Erdown, did you notice how rushed Stafford was in the game? We have NO!! OL. An offense is only as good as it’s OL. Daniel Inman is a disgrace. That fumble by Lumpkin at the start of the third Qtr was a direct result of Inman failing to block his man. Inman’s man arrived at the same time that Lumpkin received the ball and caused the fumble.
We do not run the ball very well because we do not move people off the ball. Next year we need a hugh upgrade to our OL. (Coaching). You give Stafford the kind of time I saw Ainge receive from Tenn. and he will cut defenses apart.
In the Fla game we ran more blitz packages and man-up on coverage than any other game this year. We didn’t sack Leak but he was hurried thus his less than 50% completition ratio. The question I have is why has it taken Martinez until the 9th game of the season to figure this out? This was the first game of this season where I got a sense that the defense was actually getting after folks.
By the way, Tony Taylor continues to play GREAT football. He does Oconee County proud. He helped us go 15-0 and win the state title in 3AAA in 1999.
Mark needs to make some serious coaching changes at the end of the season. I realize it is hard for Head Coaches to fire friends, but it must be done, (all the good ones do it). WE need a new OL coach, Linebacker coach, receivers coach, and most important Martinez most go. Also hire an Offensive coordinator and a DB coach. I’m afraid failure to make these changes will demonstrate a serious lack of coaching and management skills by MR.

our o-line is a Disgrace due to the failure of mark richt not taking care of business. We keep recruiting dumbass south ga. boys who cant spell their name for fear they might sign with someone else. Let them have these idiots and they can be in the same shape we are in. Tech, AS MUCH AS I HATE TO ADMIT IT, has done an outstanding job of recruiting and hand picking their players whom seem to all be very well spoken and intelligent and are good solid athletes, with out all the pomp and circumstance. It seems that all of our recruits have the holy than thou additude that they are the greatest thing on the planet, make every chump wait till signing day before they commit and then the dumbass”s cant even get into school.Lets sign the 3 star and 4 star players who dont want their a* kissed and will qualify and just want to be bulldogs all along. Reasonable Dawg: I heard on a different board that Miller was promised he could have a shot at LB when he was recruited. I can’t verify this as truth, but I have looked up his high school info, and he was highly, highly touted as a DE in high school. #1 at his position by rivals in fact. I think it would be a mistake not to line him up opposite to c. johnson next year.

Isn’t it amazing how quickly Georgia fans jump on and off the bandwagon? Being an ALUMNI of UGA it pains me how all of these so-called fans complain about anything and everything. Mark Richt and his staff are one of the best in the country. EVERY team has a down year. There is very little senior leadership on the team besides Tony Taylor. Our D-line has not gotten the pressure that was expected and our secondary lost 3 seniors. UGA should still win 8 games with a freshman quarterback and without its top RB. You people need to support our team and not boo college kids like Martrez Millner who are having a rough go of it. The future looks bright for UGA, now all we need are bright fans to go with it.

To Kentucky Kade: With 6 victories UGA is already bowl eligible.
As for the inspired defensive performance against the Gators, from what I understand the coaching staff changed up pass coverage unlike they have in the past, and I’m sure the players were tired of all the complaints. Plus, it was Florida, a team the Dawgs get fired up for.
Like several other folks have said, the offensive woes have put the defensive unit in a hole so many times they were probably playing with sour attitude … I know I would.
I knew this season would be a struggle going in, I just didn’t expect receivers to drop so many passes, the O-line to be so inconsistent and the defense to be so suspect against underrated teams. I know the coaches like to keep things low key, but defensive is a game of emotion. Without it, you lose you physical edge.
By No, the Dogs got NO Balls - a "substantial" drop in U.S. men's testosterone levels

Men’s testosterone levels declined in last 20 years Tue Oct 31, 2006 2:23 PM ET
By Anne Harding
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study has found a “substantial” drop in U.S. men’s testosterone levels since the 1980s, but the reasons for the decline remain unclear. This trend also does not appear to be related to age.
The average levels of the male hormone dropped by 1 percent a year, Dr. Thomas Travison and colleagues from the New England Research Institutes in Watertown, Massachusetts, found. This means that, for example, a 65-year-old man in 2002 would have testosterone levels 15 percent lower than those of a 65-year-old in 1987. This also means that a greater proportion of men in 2002 would have had below-normal testosterone levels than in 1987.
“The entire population is shifting somewhat downward we think,” Travison told Reuters Health. “We’re counting on other studies to confirm this.”
Travison and his team analyzed data from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, a long-term investigation of aging in about 1,700 Boston-area men. Data from the men were collected for three time intervals: 1987-1989, 1995-1997, and 2002-2004.
While a man’s testosterone level will fall steadily as he ages, the researchers observed a speedier decline in average testosterone levels than would have been expected with aging alone.
They hypothesized that the rising prevalence of obesity as well as the sharp decline in cigarette smoking might help explain their findings, given that testosterone levels are lower among overweight people and smoking increases testosterone levels. But these factors accounted for only a small percentage of the observed difference.
It’s likely that some sort of environmental exposure is responsible for the testosterone decline, Travison said, although he said attempting to explain what this might be based on the current findings would be “pure conjecture.”
The researchers used body mass index, the ratio of height to weight, to estimate obesity levels, he noted, but this is not a very accurate way to gauge the real adiposity, or fat content of the body, so it’s possible that obesity might be more of a factor than it appears in this analysis.
“I think like most things that are complex, it’s likely that there is no one cause,” he said.

Dawgs defense did play better second half against Florida, but Gators have not scored over 28 points on any SEC team this year. Chris Leak has been up and down, Tedow is asset to be a freshman. Florida has speed and quality athletes, but they are not a 4th BCS team. They will have to play their butts off to win against SC. Auburn gave them the same dose as UGA second half, but special teams and ball controt won it for Auburn. LSU will win out beating Tenn. Ark. and others if Miles coaches instead guesses.

Our D will not be legit if Willie Martinez continues to drop our safties 25 yards away from scrimmage on 3rd and long. All the opposing QB’s have to do is complete an 8 yard pass over the LB’s and move the chains one more time. UT had 27 first downs doing just that. Where is Willie sending our safties anyway? To get a coke or something? No wonder Greg Blue didn’t have a good year his last year. Willie was taking him out of the play. I will admit that I was happy to see more agressive play against UF, but I’ll bet you that it was just a fluke by Willie. He’ll get back to his cover two comfort zone this week against the Kats and make them look like championship contenders.

With Verdun starting: 5-0; since he was made a scapegoat by Jancek, Martinez, and Richt: 1-3. He did play poorly in a NEW position against Miss, but show me a Ga defender who hasn’t played poorly at some point this season, other than Tony Taylor. Disgraceful treatment of a young man who played all last year with a swollen ankle and the last half of the year with a torn ligament in his wrist and never complained. Furthermore, has worked at all 3 LB spots in best interest of the team. Dispicable. Also, someone needs to teach Martinez to count so Ga’s defense doesn’t get outnumbered in the box a la West Va game.

True fan, you’re damn right I expect perfection! And I hope to God that our players and our coaching staff do too. I know when I played ball that’s what I expcected of myself. We all know they’re not always going to play perfectly, but if that’s not what they’re striving for, we better get used to playing for bowl eligibility instead of shots at the SEC Championship.

The defensive problems result from the combination of a mediocre pass rush, inexperienced CB’s, and mediocre safeties. The pass rush can’t get to the QB quickly leaving corners either in man coverage or struggling to figure out where their zone is, and they in turn have safeties backing them up who are frequently not able to make a play.

Give the defense a rest every once and a while and I think they will be fine the rest of the year. Tony Taylor needs to keep up the great play and pass some fire on to the other guys. I don’t know why but I thought Kellin put some hard hits on some of the UF guys Saturday. That or I was drunk. One thing for certain our pass D better be ready Saturday because that KY QB looks like he has been picking D’s apart all season.

ONly need 6 victories 1-A or 1-AA, to be bowl eligible. Used to be 6 1-A wins only but that changed a couple years ago that’s why teams still schedule 1-AA teams. Everyone says that the rule change mentioned above as well as the move to 12 games a season was so big money programs could make more money, but that is incorrect. Those changes were put in place because the small schools wanted it. A 1-AA school came make twice as much money as a visitor at Powerhouse U than they can at home against their biggest rival.

GTDC- you’re close. Teams that rely on a Freshman QB to carry the team are supposed to lose. Freshman QBs that come in for a handful of plays to run the ball 3 yards are not the same thing.
Has the defense really looked that bad this year people? They havn’t necessarilly dominated. They played very well against the “patsies.” Tenn. had two drives, one of 19 yards and one of 36 yards and a punt block in the endzone. That’s 21 points that IMO doesn’t go against them. It goes against the offense and special teams. Let’s not forget also that as soon as we run the kick off back for a TD we kick to them and let them bring back past the 50!They held Fla. to 14 points. If the offense could throw up some points on a consistent basis then that 14-13 win against Colorado looks more like a 30-14 shalacking! With a little blocking and don’t even get me started on the drops, a little thing called MOMENTUM can build!

Kalamazoo - good one. I was suprised to run into Odell Thurman in the slammer. He was really down for some reason. Closer than I wanted? A majority of your buddies on here predicted a UGAY win, so I guess we came out pretty good (Remember though, I did say several times that it would be a good game). Don’t jinx us on the you know what at you know where.
Looks like some of your boys want to send Richt “to da moon Alice”! Keep em under control, and good luck vs Kentucky.

GTDC. Yeah you had me worried because I didn’t see any of your posts for a couple days. Those so called “fans” that are giving Richt a hard time I believe might be gator traitors/Aubies/Techies sneaking in with the negatives on our program and Coach. Us true Dawg fans still appreciate the fact that we have him as our coach. Win out and we have another 10 win season. Wake up and it might not happen. But it might be possible if they play the rest of the year like they did Saturday without the mistakes.

THe change in the Defensive performance in the Florida game is quite simple to explain — SCHEME SCHEME SCHEME.
Prior to last week, Martinez ran a basic Cover-2 Zone - EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN PLAY!!! Last year against Florida, Ga blitzed one time in the entire game. This year against Tennessee 2 blitzes.
Teams got to the point where they know exactly what Defence Georgia is going to run and how to exploit it. Last year we had the personnel to cover the schematic weakness up. This year we do not. Tennessee exposed the weakness, and Vandy drove the truck through the door. Luckily, Miss St did not have the talent to fully exploit it.
Against Florida, Martinez finally seemed to see the light. Gods own QB Timmy Tebow was shut down completely, and Chris Leak was hounded and harrassed by an agressive Stunting and Blitzing scheme he was not prepared for. For two weeks Florida salivated and planned a systematic destruction of Martinez vanilla D. Martinez finally got off his butt and changed it up, and it confused Florida bigtime. Unfortunately our O-line and offence are not yet at the point that we could overcome the turnovers and mistakes.
I expect to see the same agressive Defensive play calling this week. If we do that, the Dawgs win easily, and have a 50/50 shot of beating auburn and Tech or both. If they go back to the standard vanilla Willie Martinez D, Kentucky QB and recievers will pick it apart and we are suddenly staring 6-6 square in the face.
Everyone talks about Stafford having the breakout game at some point. I am hoping Florida was Willie M’s “break out” “wake up” game. If so, maybe he starts showing he can coach in the SEC, if not then he needs to be gone at the end of the season.

gator dog catcher, thanks hope we can be in Atlanta, but we still have our hands full with UGA and Bammer. UGA plays like crazy at Jordan-Hare and they will be at the top of their game. Bammer is s0-s0, but we are playing at Tuberville Stadium (unbeaten)in Tizzltown. They will be ready… Arky will hopefully lose to South Carolina this week. LSU will whip their butts all over.CTT did a poor job preparing for the Ark.

I knew it would come to this. I see fair weather fans coming out of the wood works. This is a down year for UGA, every team in the country will have these. Mark Richt is a good coach and has done wonders with a program that was less than average at best. I do agree that a coach needs to be replaced but more than one and your just talking crazy. This is the worst team UGA has had in years and they are still bowl eligible. Come on people put your claws away and pull for our team. Go Dawgs!!!!

LOL, if Tuberville bolts for Miami there may be mass suicides and psychotic meltdowns all throughout the plains. But, on the bright side, the coach (The Lil general) with one of the highest winning %’s in Auburn history is still unemployed.

Rumor, I agree Cutcliffe to NC. If TT goes Miami then Rodriguez to Auburn? Or does one of the Auburn assistants step up? I thought maybe Rodriguez to Miami if TT stays put. But like you say time for him to stick it to the a-wipes that tried to fry him before.

Mike in Montgomery - not a bad observation, but not all correct. Every team in college football will show a cover 2 shell 98% of the time, because you can roll to cover 3 at the snap, back off to cov 4, as well as stay in cover 2 or play 2 deep/man under coverage.
For a team to blitz and be fundamentally sound behind it they must run either man coverage (to cover rec and backs) or cov 2 so that the blitzing LB has coverage for his “flats” responsibility (by the corner back). Blitz in cov 3 or cov 4 and the “flats” will be wide open. Blitz with 2 deep/man under and you will not have anyone in the flats, nor will you have enough defenders to pick up the backs.
My point is, if he came out of cov 2 for the game, he wouldn’t have blitzed much at all unless he was going to risk his db’s getting burnt in man cov. Trust me, Martinez confused no one, and his defense was exactly the same as before plus a couple of minor wrinkles. Florida trying to kill the clock and shorten the game made Martinez look better than he really is.

Kalamazoo - could very well happen but………Rodriguez is from West Virginia, so I don’t see him leaving “Home”. UNC wants Cutcliffe, but I don’t see him leaving Tenn again for awhile (less stress and more input in the game plan), but I could be wrong. I also heard Chris Hatcher from Valdosta State (may have some ties to UNC people). As for Miami the two names I have heard are Greg Schiano (Rutgers) who is a former Miami asst and recruits well in South Florida, Butch Davis, and Miami alum Mark Richt. Don’t be suprised if Bobby Petrino is thrown into the mix.
Ignoring all of the rumors my guess is Greg Schiano to …..UNC (instead of Miami) and Bobby Petrino to Miami.

The defense has excelled except the last 38 minutes vs. TN and the last drive vs Vandy. It was called prevent defense. We prevented ourselves from winning.

GTDC, yeah that might work too. I don’t see Richt leaving. The word last year in Knoxville was that Cutcliffe would prefer an HC job again. After all he didn’t do too badly at Ole Miss.
I guess I temporarily forgot about Davis. That would be the safest bet for them. And I guess Petrino was all ready to jump ship at one point wasn’t he. Didn’t he have his picture taken on that runway with the G IV painted like an war eagle? Or was the plane painted like a plainsman?

Is the defense legit? The jury is still out, but when they have played inspired football such as the South Carolina and Florida games they have been legit. So what are the theories out there? Coaching? If so, why? Where do improvements need to be made? Personnel? Who should have been demoted or promoted? There isn’t one answer; bad coaching by not adjusting to what the other team was doing, running the same scheme/plays etc. Injuries to key players i.e. James Jackson, Gant, Michael Turner, Nick Jones and others. Inconsistent play by the Offensive and Defensive Lines, Receivers and Defensive Backs.
And, most importantly, will this new-found inspirational play last for the defense? If you think it will, why? What leads you to believe it wasn’t just a one-game wonder against a team Georgia has little trouble getting up for? It will last if the coaches continue to mix up the defenses schemes, the offense moves the ball and cuts down on the turnovers, otherwise the Kentucky, Auburn and GA Tech games will be miserable to watch.

The bad news: Because of the defense holding Florida to a paultry 21 points and probably a decent defensive showing against UK, look for Big Play Willie to captian the defense once again next year. When we roll into Knoxville next year and Cutcliff lights us up for 40 points we will once again say, “hey our defense stinks”. Actually that will occur weeks prior against someone like Fish Tech. Can him this year or go ahead and throw 2007 down a manhole.

Hey you people just don`t get it CTT is not going anywhere, Rodriquez is home, if Maimi job opens it will be between OC here or DC there, nobody is moving in the SEC for Maimi job. The next head coach at FSU is Rich Rodriquez. The best prospect for a big job in the country is Coach Grope at Wake Forest. He is the best prospect for a prominent head coach SOON.

The 4 Losses to TN-VANDY-FL-KY have been caused by [1] the collapse of the defense in the 2nd half of the season, [2] missing critical field goals and extra points and [3] FUMBLES, not interceptions. TN-VANDY-FL-KY GOT 42 PTS OFF OF LUMPKIN, RAILEY AND TERANINSKY TURNOVERS, WHILE THEY GOT ZERO POINTS OFF OF STAFFORD INTERCEPTIONS. Why blame a freshman for a senior class that has collapsed on both defensive and offensive lines. Stafford’s interceptions resulted in zero points for KY and zero for FL, Vandy, TN. He has 9 interceptions in 5 games but they have resulted in zero points to the 4 teams that beat us. The defense has given up 144 points in the last 5 games [29 pts/game] and we have lost 4 out of 5 games. In our first 5 wins, the defense only gave up only 24 pts total. How can you ever win if you are giving up 29 pts a game. If it keeps up, AUBURN AND TECH games will be over by the end of the 1st Quarter. The offense is scoring enough points [24 per game] to be 8-2 or 9-1 if the defense had not fallen apart. Against KY, the defense gave up a game-winning-drive again, just like Vandy, after Stafford engineered the go-ahead touchdown. The key point of the game was when GA was down 17-14 with 8 mins to go and Stafford engineered a 83 yd scoring drive and ate up 5 ½ mins of time to put us ahead 20-14. Then Andy Bailey missed the Extra Point for his 7th missed points for the day [2 other missed FGs] All the defense had to do was stop a 70 yd drive over 11 plays to win the game with 3 mins 40 sec left in the game. Instead KY goes 70 years on 11 plays eating up chunks of turf at 6, 11, 5 , 14, 9, 6, 7, 8, 1 [for a 1st down], 3 [for a TD] leaving only .59 seconds. Stafford only had 59 seconds to go 63 yds and the odds of an interception is likely. This loss lies at the feet of the DEFENSE, not Stafford
