UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Seeking predictions

The death of former Georgia Southern head coach/UGA assistant Erk Russell has cast a pall over the Bulldog Nation on the eve of the season’s first game.

However, let’s hear everyone’s predictions on what’s going to go down in Columbia tomorrow night. I’ve got to get back to work on our Erk Russell coverage for Saturday’s paper.

Enjoy.

Most of the current players probably didn’t know who Erk Russel was before today. I was at Ga Southern (college at the time) when he won 2 of his championships and my kids are in school now…Hopefully MR will educate them tonight and use it as some motivation…

I have known coach Russell many years, from recruiting , coaches clinic and few beers at the bar, he was always the same. `While coaching at Auburn his young son accidentally hung himself in the backyard. It was a terrible tragedy and I will always remember his composure during these awful times. A great Auburn man who came to UGA with Coach Dooley and the rest is history.Coach Doc Ayers, icon for recruiting during the Dooley Era, called me this AM and was in shock. He had just spoke with Coach Russell yesterday. Great coach and person, he always will be remembered as a player coach. I hope Dawgs win one for the “bald man”.tomorrow.

Dawgs win by whatever the Boise State score was last year. Just because they were close in the past doesn’t mean it’ll be close thise time. Joe T does great and Stafford does great. Running game picks up.

I was on the field after Erk’s last game as coach. A barnburning comeback (from WAY down to Stephen S. Austin) to go 15-0 and win it all! I was nearly knocked unconscious by the goalpost, and I was standing on the 50 YARD LINE!!!!! Dawgs by 4 TDs……41-13! Rest in peace Erk, we’ll miss you!

If Stafford plays, I hope they just let him PLAY THE GAME! QBs managing a game? I know, I knowwhat they mean but in my opinion that’s just another word for “conservstive”. Let’m “manage” the game and then get out of the way and let him “PLAY” the game with his talent. Coaching this type of talent is a challenge. Don’t hold him back, let’m go! BTW, there’s nothing wrong with drawing up a play on the sidelines during the game if you see something to take advantage of…..Gooooooo DAWGS!….20-13, no change

Mad Merf, thanks for the kind words, even though I didn’t want Joe T. to get hurt. I posted this on one other blog and I’ll say it one time here and only one time because it was this blog where back in Feb. I said”Strafford would play early and often”. Now lets move on and watch him develope. Nothing seemed it upset set his “apple cart”. Ware was the one who said that he is meditating when he’s on the field? Here it is : meditating Matthew Stafford. MMS, looks good! Danny Ware has given us a nick name we can have a lot of fun with.

Buck, I would never accuse you of wishing injury to any of our players, and as one of the most active bloggers on this site, you do deserve credit for making the ‘early and often’ call. I have, however, always thought you were overly paranoid about SOS and the Gamecocks. We should have won by more, and you never know how a game will play out after losing the starting QB early, but who are we to argue about the true freshman’s performance in that situation. His poise and mobility gave me chillbumps, and I can’t help but get excited about the next 3 or hopefully 4 years watching him wearing the Red and Black! The ‘D’ played lights out, and forget about the “would have been”, Eskine Russell “is” proud of those goal line stands and don’t think for a second he didn’t inspire that exceptional play from the defenders. …..LONG LIVE THE BALD EAGLE!!!! and GO DAWGS!!!!

Nice game Dawgs, goooooood Defenseeeeeee. I know alot of revenge for this game and Coach Spurrier. Well played on defense and offense. MS will mature with repetitions and experience. I look forward to more stiff competition, UAB looks decent this year, but we should put them away very quickly. Too Bad Colorado sux so bad this year. We actually tried to scheduled a good team when we put the on the sched. a few years ago. Can we cancel them and get Ga Southern at the last minute? Auburn does look good, and I wouldn’t mind if they were our one loss this year. But, Can we please stomp the Gators this year, CMR? I came to the realization a week or two ago, that I don’t really hate Spurrier that much. We should beat USC each year, because they have a talent deficit compared to us. But I don’t hate them because of CSS. I hate Florida so much more, and only Spurrier because he rubbed it in each year. It’s time we started a streak against UF.

.

My prediction was a BLOW-OUT by UGA and 18 to Goose Eggs, certainly qualifies.

Top 10 in both the AP Poll and The Coaches Poll, where the BuLLDawgs have now lived 5 years in a row. Of the 2 only previous SEC Coaches to have Won 10 or more games a Season 5 Consecutive Seasons, The BuLLDawgs are assured of that now for this 5th Consecutive Season of Coach Richt. Contrast that, if you will, with the fact that Tommy Tuberville has now coached in the SEC for 11 seasons and been ranked when the season was over, in 4 total ?

44 BuLLDawgs in the NFL today according to CBS Sportsline, and Michael Vick was not injured, yet the only points scored against the Falcons’ Tough Defense this season were by a former BuLLDawg John Kasay.

If The BuLLDawgs keep Winning, we will play 4 of the teams ranked ahead of us on this day today. Florida and Auburn, LSU since they are beating Auburn in that weak sister West Division of the SEC this season containing also hapless Ole Miss without a QB, more hapless than that Mississippi State, and woebegone Arkansas.

Colorado lost again.

In the meantime, UGA scored 6 times yesterday for a grand total of 18 points in the shutout of Steve Spurrier, Coach Richt’s 2nd Win in a Row over Spurrier.

And, 5th in a Row Win by Coach Richt over South Carolina, as Coach Richt also has 5 in a Row Wins by Coach Richt over Georgia Tech, who is On Probation these next two entire Seasons in Football.

Alabama, speaking of the hapless SEC West Division, also looked pitiful again this Westweakend.

Texas fell all the way to Number 8, and like I said the loser would be, is still ahead of Georgia at Number 9 Coaches and Number 10 AP.

But, next weekend, Auburn loses to LSU and Tennessee falls to Florida.

Georgia Tech moved up in the BCS Rankings today from Number 66 to Number 60. South Carolina fell from Number 42 to Number 66.

Duke, ACC cupcake, who Lost to Weak Forest is now Number 112. Congratulations Duke.

The Lady ‘Dawgs of Andy Landers, 3 on the Detroit WNBA team, won the WNBA Championship last evening.

Tweedy Nolan led the Detroit WNBA team in scoring with 24 points.

So, the weak SEC West is decided this week with LSU stomping Tommy Tuberville.

Then Tubs loses to Florida and to UGA who owns Auburn on The Plains.

Did I mention the Akron Zits beat North Carolina State University of the previously maligned by me America’s Cupcake Conference.

ACC.

Is that the Zips ? The Zits ? Akron ?

Congrats ACC.

FSU beat Troy by one TD, 24-17. Boy that team sucks, FSU. And, they beat Miami Hurricanes. What does that say about how bad Miami is ?

Oh, Climpson Farmers of Tammy Bowden, lost again.

That was the team UGA last shutout before we Shut Out Steve Spurrier last night, Goose Egg Martrez Milner called it.

The game DJ Shockley was Player of the Game in a 30 to nothing rout of Clemson at the “Real Death Valley” Coach Richt called it pregame.

Did I mention the team Colorado lost to last week, this week lost to Chadron State by 11 points ?

Montana State, no not Joe, beat Colorado last week and lost this week to 35-24 to Chadron State. That wouldn’t otherwise be noteworthy that Montana State lost to Chadron State, but when they beat Colorado of the mighty Big XII cough cough last week and cannot even beat Chadron State, it’s a safe bet that Texas if they get to play Colorado again this year in the Big XII Championship Game again, will win again.

Right ?

Mack Brown sucks.

Georgia’s Opponents this season, have gone a 5-7 combined to start the season. Thank you Colorado. Thank you Georgia Tech. Thank you Mississippi State. Thank you Ole Miss. Thank you Kentucky. Thank you South Carolina. And, thank you Colorado again.

Is that our 1st 8 opponents ?

I think that pretty much covers them, doesn’t it ?

The vols looked really bad. In fact, after the 1st quarter and a half of the opening game, the vols have looked to be on of the most miserable football teams in Knoxville in a long long long long long long time.

And, that is really saying something, considering half of the last half a dozen years, Phillip Fulmer has not been ranked in the Final AP Poll at all.

Spurrier is a really bad sport.

David Greene is on the inactive roster of the Seattle Seahawks.

http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/411750

ESPN reports there are 40 BuLLDawgs in the NFL today, and that includes DJ Shockley and his $1.6 million dollar contract with the Atlanta Falcons, who look great this season.

Coach Richt’s Georgia ?

In the Top 10 in the nation in both AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, both Top 10.

Ho hum, how boring 5 years in a row Top 10 Coach Richt’s UGA BuLLDawgs.

You predicted that we would LOSE this game to South Carolina because of Offensive Line sucks you said Buck Cochran, and that as a result Joe Peter Tereshinski III would lose his Starting Job as Coach Richt’s Number 1 Quarterback, and that Swafford would never look back.

You also said that Coach Richt isn’t any good as a Coach.

And, Buck Cochran you agreed with Racist ConyersDawg that DJ Shockley was no damn good and never should have played any minutes of the 11 percent of the plays he played in the Coach Richt Era before his senior season, leaving David Greene with 89 percent of the plays he had of Coach Richt’s Era while the two were there.

Furthermore, you stated quite boldly on this point too Buck Cochran that then as northWestDawg handle, that DJ Shockley would not make the Falcons’ roster and would never see a dime of the $1.6 million dollars.

Not only did you say Coach Richt would lose to South Carolina last night, and because of our OL you said, but you further lambasted Coach Richt on his play calls, coaching skills, and playing of DJ Shockley.

You stated Coach Richt was wrong in playing DJ Shockley those 11 percent of the plays he had prior to his Senior Season here last season.

And, was equally wrong in not making SWAFFORD the Starter back in June in here Buck Cochran.

Now that Spurrier has lost twice in a row to Coach Richt, you want to say you were right all along.

BS.

We all see you are very happy that Joe Peter Tereshinski III was injured so that Swafford could come in when Joe T already had won the game 3 to nothing, right ?

And, throw 3 interceptions ?

Joe T played one series.

And, you don’t even know Blake Barnes had a pass breakup.

You are a senile old goat who cannot write or remember what you wrote yourself 3 different times in this one blog Buck Cochran.

I’ve been glancing at some of the stories about how great On Probation in Football these next two (2) entire Seasons in Football Georgia Tech is doing in recruiting according to Rivals.com.

Now that Tech is 1-1 and UGA 2-0, as UGA has averaged a Number 5 Rivals’ Recruiting Ranking for the least last 5 Recruiting Classes, which with Redshirts then make up our team this season, I have time to study the details of what Rivals actually says about recruiting for Georgia Tech and Georgia (Number 9 USA Today Coaches’ Poll and Number 10 AP Poll for the 5th consecutive season now for Coach Richt (5-0 versus Georgia Tech) compared to what Chandler Gailey has done.

There are 5 Georgia Tech commitments for February which are ranked in the Top 18 at their position in the nation and of those 5, two (2) are ranked in the Top 10 in their state overall, according to Rivals. There is, only 1, ranked in the Top 7 in the nation at their position.

There are 10 Georgia Dawg commitments for February which are ranked in the Top 17 at their position in the nation and of those five (5) are ranked in the Top 10 in their state overall, according to Rivals. These are, all 5, ranked in the Top 7 in the nation at their position.

The USA Today Coaches’ Poll cannot have 4 votes for Georgia Tech in the Top 25 this week (UGA has 997 votes), because by agreement with the BCS, the USA Today Coaches’ Poll cannot consider any team who currently is on Probation in Football. Georgia is Number 9.

The Details according to Rivals.com are that Coach Richt’s Logan Gray 4.45 is the Number 7 Dual-Threat Quarterback in the nation today and that Josh Nesbitt 4.58 is Number 8.

Rivals has Georgia Tech’s 2006 Recruiting Ranking at Number 57, UGA at Number 4. For 2005 Recruiting Rankings according to Rivals.com, Georgia Tech is Number 62 and UGA Number 10. For 2004, Georgia Tech Number 56 and Georgia Number 6. For 2003, Georgia Tech Number 50 and Georgia Number 6. And, for 2002, Georgia Tech Number 63 and Georgia Number 3. Average Georgia Tech Rivals’ Recruiting Ranking over the last 5 Seasons, which with Redshirts make up your team this season is Number 57 for Chandler Gailey and Georgia Number 5 for Coach Richt.

Which is why when you look at CBS Sportsline list of 17 Georgia Tech players in the NFL today, you find 44 UGA BuLLDawgs instead. By the way, Reuben Houston, whom you played against us in our last game, is not one of the 17 in the NFL today – I guess his baggage is too heavy – what with 93 lbs. of drugs he was in the van of with his infant on his lap driving around Georgia Tech’s campus in the slums there taking them to a friend of his Reuben admitted to the AJ-C whom Reuben guaranteed would sell the drugs for them, all 93 lbs.

Predictions by Gainesville Florida Sun Writer Pat Dooley:

By PAT DOOLEY

Sun sports writer July 04. 2006 6:01AM

Font Size: 101112131415161718192021222324

You know it’s summer when the best sporting events on television are replays of old football games (especially with the Braves in the tank).

You know it’s summer when the lure of the beach or a cool lake nibbles away at your brain until you can’t resist.

You know it’s summer when you start looking for shady spots in parking lots.

You know it’s summer when you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a youth camp or a golf tournament.

And you know it’s summer when I write my annual column rating the SEC’s football programs.

I know you’ve been anxiously awaiting this summer’s rankings. Well, I don’t know it but I’m hoping you are curious. OK, I’m hoping a couple of you remember that I’ve done this for the last three years.

Since this is the fourth annual, it’s time to give the rankings a catchy name. I mean, it is a tradition now.

Kind of.

So here is this summer’s DDS ? Dooley Decimal System. Except there are no decimals. And it’s not really a system but one man’s opinion. But it’s catchy.

Every year when I do this, there is a misconception that I’m ranking the teams in the order of where they will finish in the conference or how strong this year’s team is going to be in the fall. Again, this is a ranking of the overall football programs of each team based on a number of factors ? recent success, perception of the programs, recruiting, facilities, fan base, coaching stability, discipline, assistant coaches, etc.

Gentlemen (and ladies), start your e-mails.

(Last year’s rankings are in parentheses).

  1. Georgia (4):

No team has been as successful in the last four years. Georgia has played in three of the four SEC title games, winning two of them. Mark Richt has built a powerful program ? even with a lack of success against Florida ? and is doing it the right way. Athletic director Damon Evans has settled into the job, the facilities are excellent and the fan base is as good as any. The Bulldogs aren’t going away.

  1. Auburn (5):

Now that it seems as if Tommy Tuberville is entrenched after the bizarre situation a couple of years ago, Auburn is moving forward with strength and unity. The stadium is my favorite in the conference so it’s a good thing to see Florida heading back there this season. Solid recruiting and a string of excellent seasons make the Tigers one of the South’s most powerful programs.

  1. LSU (1):

It’s not that LSU has slipped as much as the other two have pushed past the Tigers. Les Miles is in his second year and his recruiting has picked up right where Nick Saban’s left off. The newly refurbished stadium was delayed by Hurricane Katrina and the storm also made life hectic in Baton Rouge. But this year, things will be as close to normal as they can be.

  1. Florida (2):

Florida certainly has a fan base that is awesome, a stadium that is amazing and a coach in Urban Meyer who has a year of experience in the SEC under his belt. But the Gators haven’t been to a BCS bowl game since 2001 and haven’t played for the conference title since 2000. We all know what Meyer has done as a recruiter, but he’s still fighting to get attitudes where he wants them.

  1. Alabama (7):

Just a year ago, Mike Shula was on the hotseat. Now he’s getting asked for autographs in church. Nobody can match the Tide’s tradition and the stadium expansion will only add to the religious experience that is Alabama football.

  1. Tennessee (3):

Last year was a nightmare for the Vols and coach Phil Fulmer, but he brought a lot of the headaches on himself with some of the players he recruited. David Cutcliffe should return some stability to the coaching staff and the stadium is the biggest the league has to offer.

  1. South Carolina (7):

The head coach knows what he is doing, but he’s still struggling to get his players on the same page. Steve Spurrier has an excellent stadium and a rabid bunch of fans, but he’ll be the first to tell you the facilities aren’t what they should be.

  1. Arkansas (6):

The Razorbacks have been a major disappointment the last two years, but recruiting has picked up drastically. We’ll have to wait and see if that was only because there was so much talent in the homestate. Facilities are solid, but Houston Nutt has to change the culture of losing.

  1. Mississippi (10):

Ed Orgeron surprised a lot of people with a strong recruiting season so the talent is improving. But it’s still not where it needs to be and neither are the facilities.

  1. Vanderbilt (11):

Jay Cutler is gone and it will be a struggle for Bobby Johnson to get the Commodores into the top four in the SEC East. Being an afterthought in your own town doesn’t help matters. Neither does a high school stadium.

  1. Mississippi State (9):

Sylvester Croom still has a long way to go to get this program back on track.

  1. Kentucky (12):

The coach probably only has a year to get things headed in the right direction, but now that the baseball team hosted a regional and won the SEC East, the football team may be the third most popular team on campus.

One of the great tragedies in Bulldog history is that Erk, did not have the opportunity, to be the head coach @ Georgia. Disappointed that Dooley, did not offer support for Erk-pathetic. As a result of Goof’s politicial skills and Leebern’s support, we were denied Erk’s tremendous ability, which was a great loss for any supporter.

Oh, well!!!

Lane, Erk was the first one offered the job. He turned it down saying UGA should hire someone younger.

RxDawg, you called the shut-out first on the predictions blog. I never would have thought we could keep SOS off the boards, although his team helped some too, much to his dismay.

Great games on this weekend Tiger vs tiger. I like the LSU tigers they have prove they can play and I think right now they are better than allbarn. LSWHO 23 AU 6 .. Tenn and Fl. I like tenn in this one I think tenn wins with good pass defense ,because if fl. could run the ball they wouled be albe to beat Tenn, but they can’t. Tenn17 fl.14.. Of course the DAWGS should win there next 3 games with no trouble . I am wondering is Vandy that good or is Bama theat bad this year ,guess we will find out later in the year…. Sure is funny how The old BAll Coach said that his offense was the problem and not the JUNKYARD D. Thats ok we will see them again next year. Spurrier hates the dawgs as much as we hate him,hey spurrier 0-2 ha ha ha

How much different what became the Goff era might have become with the charismatic Erk Russell at the helm. Rest in piece Coach Russell you were and remain a Georgia treasure.

quick apology i think is in order… i know i called out a few people and i was wrong. heh shows how much i know. but i must say it’s one of those instances where you glad to be wrong. didn’t think the dawgs would dominate like they did. underestimated how much stronger we are on both lines of scrimmage.

still hated to see joe t go out the way he did, but MS is something else.

i realize coach richt keeps running brown so he won’t lose confidence and so he can get a rythm but it’s clear that our best runner is d. ware. he looks great.

as weak as usc’s line was on saturday night, i was dissapointed in the lack of pressure by our vaunted defensive ends.

i hope everyone doesn’t overlook UAB.. i don’t want to be the one that always see’s the glass half empty, but i just try to look at the game as objectively as i can. i doubt MR will let this team get complacent. if the dawgs can build some momentum and chemistry before the tenn game. this year could end up being real special!

BuLLdawg - I wasn’t going to talk about this but here are the facts.

Scout National Top 100 Georgia Tech - 1 , UGAY - 0

Scout Southeast Top 100 Georgia Tech - 8 , UGAY - 6

Rivals National Top 100 Georgia Tech - 3 , UGAY - 1

Not meaning to insult, just want BuLLdawg to get his facts straight. Also BuLLdawg Logan Gray is a good qb prospect and while you pointed out the Gray is one spot ahead of Nesbitt on Rivals, you forgot to mention that Nesbitt is #8 on Scout while Gray is #12. Who is better? I can’t say, but how about some balance to those stats hoss!

UGA has put themselves in the “right place at the right time”. Look at the schedule next three games UBA, Colorado,Ole Miss. Tennessee…Miss. State Vandy. The three games before Tennessee give Stafford a little space especially playing home except Ole Miss. The teams will not be as tough. after Tennessee two teams that will probably has not claimed a victory.Florida(tough) Kentucky2-8) more than likely and then AUBURN.I think GT will be as tough as Tennessee. My point he has some learning time, whereas, it could be worst. Of course the AD did`nt know this situation while Stafford was a sophmore in high school.Brandon Cox was not as foruante., GT, Miss State, LSU,WK and Arkansas.

War Eagle - how dare you say that UGAY has a weak schedule. They play 3 ranked teams this year! Not to mention Western Kentucky AND Kentucky. “Fatt Matt” spotted everybody 3 INT’s just to give the rest of the qbs in the nation a head start before he makes his unprecedented 4 Heisman Trophies run.

Get ready for the “Logan Gray will start next year” talk!

I know alot of you Dawg pals have no respect for Coach Tuberville, but I have just come across this on the Auburn Board. Auburn has lost only one SEC game since late 2003,UGA beat us at Sanford Field was the last until, LSU beat us overtime in 2005. No SEC coach can really touch that stat. So I have always thought credit should be given when due…sorry to reminiscence about Auburn, but quite a accomplishment. WE have won or shared the last 5 West division titles.

War Eagle, not everybody here is hating on TT. As I have mentioned before I do respect the guy and really, really enjoyed your perfect season after they tried to fire him. To watch that mess and the aftermath was awesome. He definitely has your program in the spotlight, one I hope we can put out this year. Can’t wait for Sat. night though.

Hey fellas… Sorry about all those stupid things I say on here, its just that I really hated my life before steve spurrier came to coach the gators. I’m also kind of angry that I’m 46 and my parents are already asking me to move out! My mullet just hasn’t looked right as my hairline recedes and its soooo hard to find jean shorts that fit like those I had in the 90’s. So when I make stupid remarks on here about yous guys needing luck to get into the SECCG, remind me that UF hasn’t made it in awhile because we’ve lost against USC and UT. Oh, by the way, I think our freshman QB is way hotter than yours!

BuLLDawg, the SEC east is as bad as the west this year, maybe worse. Both sides have two good teams and one pretender to go with 3 bad teams. Your criticism of every other team is laughable. You can’t knock every other team and then act like we play a good schedule. We’ll win ten games, maybe more this year for two reasons: 1) we’re good 2) our schedule stinks

Gator is upset because he was a Miami fan in the 80’s, then he decided to bat from the other side of the plate and pull for the Gators once that train got rolling for the first, last and only time in the 90’s.

Ya’ll should take it easy on him and just wait until SoCar beats them again this year. After that we’ll never hear from him again, because he will be on some FSU blog running his mouth.

So that makes shut out number 2… UGA 34, UAB 0…. first time since 1980.
