UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Is NIT good enough?

With an official RPI of No. 97, it’s pretty clear the only way Georgia makes it to the NCAA tournament this year is by winning the SEC tournament. And the chances of this young team winning four SEC games in four days to that is next to impossible.

But coach Dennis Felton and his players have already said that they would be thrilled with an NIT bid. Of course, they’ve got some work to do before even that could be solidified. But how about you? Would making the NIT this season be considered a success considering from whence Georgia has come (8-20 last year) and what it has had to overcome (the Jim Harrick scandal).

As an aside, do Dogs fans think the new AD at Georgia Tech will have any effect whatsoever on the ongoing rivalry?

A bid to the NIT would certainly be a milestone for this program as it works its way back to the competitive ranks of the SEC and nation.

Aside: It looks like NATS have hired a guy with brains in his head, as opposed to someone who just has them in his name. Of course it will have some effect on the rivalry.

I will be very happy if the Dawgs end up in the NIT. The NCAA would be great, but realistically it’s not happening. Plus, the NIT was my goal from the beginning of the year. Remember, we only won 8 games last year, and at times were the worst offensive college basketball team I’ve ever seen. Winning 16 or 17 games, and making it to the NIT would be a great first step on the road to recovery.

Dan, I agree with you but UGA already took the first step when they hired Felton. We’re a few steps past that now, thank heavens.

Of course we would rather be in the NCAA but the NIT is certainly a decent accomplishment. Could UGA have won a few more this year? Absolutely. Could it have been much worse? Undoubtedly.

Felton’s negative remarks towards the admin and the fans are concerning though. When Tubby came to UGA, he went to many student organizations including all the fraternities and asked for support for the team. Of course, he won too, but the students were very supportive of Tubby. Has Felton made that effort?

Felton’s remarks were blown out of proportion. Let’s just be thankful we landed a coach with passion that cares very much about rebuilding the UGA basketball program. It’s over, let’s move on.

NIT is good this year, bad next year.

You could put the best AD on the planet on North Avenue and it wouldn’t help them a bit. Until they get a new coach or new QB, this rivalry will remain what it is now, a lop-sided one.

NIT will give the Dogs one more game to play if that’s what they want. New Tech AD will do a good job but UGA’s biggest fear is if Tech starts recruiting better players. If they had hired Curry that would have helped UGA more than this guy will hurt.

I’ll be there tonight to give felton and the team support against the gamecocks.

After 8-20, any post season is a welcome sight.

Great job by felton and the team. The future is bright. We do need to get behind this team and coach. It would be nice if he stayed as long as Durham did.

GO DAWGS!

I’ll bee at the game tonight to support Felton and the team as we take on the gamecocks.

The NIT would be awesome after an 8-20 record last year.

We need to get behind this team and coach because the future is bright. I hope Felton stays as long as Durham.

GO DAWGS!

No, an NIT berth is not a successful season at UGA in year three of Felton’s tenure. At what point does he have to stop hiding behind the Harrick scandal and take responsibility for the team’s success or failure. I’m tired of his excuses for losses where it’s obvious he got flat outcoached. Tenn. and UK games good examples. We get up 19-7 on Vols, then they go to a full court press and we act shocked, like we never expected it. By the time we adjust they are up 2. At Lexington we go over 8:00 without scoring and “Coach” doesn’t call a TO or anything. We still only lost by 6, it was a game Harrick or Tubby would have won when they were here with the same players. But I guess that’s all our faults as fans since according to Felton we’ve never sold out Stegman before and the fans that do come don’t make enough noise.I’ve got a message for Coach Felton, and I use the term coach loosely. Win and they will come. We sold out every SEC game for 2 yrs under Harrick. The nerve to blame the fans. I think he is classless, and a poor head coach.

“Suspended Offensive Lineman Arrested”

Anyone of you care to honestly tell me that Mark Richt does not run a thug program….What suspension does Ian Smith get now, the Vanderbilt game as well….What a joke…..

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Billy D. and gator the dog catcher for last night’s performance against the Vols. We now will end up ahead of you in the SEC East and you will have to play on Thursday night of the tournament.

I’ve got a message for the fan Kevin Mull, and I use the the term fan loosely……I think he is classless, and a poor example of a UGA fan.

Geechee, I’ve probably been to more UGA sporting events in the last year than you ever have or will in your lifetime. However, you are typical of a lot of fans in the Bulldog Nation who tolerate dissent when itn comes to coaches about as well as Castro tolerates political dissent in Cuba.I’m not going to apologize for setting high standards, if that’s classless, then so be it. But I was highly offended when Felton ripped myself and other fans that support the program. I also noticed you didn’t argue with my examples of poor coaching, probably because you either didn’t even see the game or don’t know enough about basketball anyway. all that being said, I’ll be there to root them on tonight.

Stan, I’m just curious. Are you the same clown with the awful Tennessee accent that constantly calls in to every sports talk show in the South ripping UGA and pumping up your Mighty Vols???? Because if so, 3 things. 1. Your preoccupation with UGA just shows how much we have owned UT the last 6 years. 2. I don’t normally quote Spuurier, but as he said, “If you want to talk about arrests then you need to go to Knoxville, they always have problems”

  1. Did the dirty money suddenly dry up up there? Fulmer wasn’t able to buy his usual Top 5 class

Kevin since I live 5,000 miles away from Clarke County, I’m sure you have been to more games than me in the last ten years and I didn’t argue with your examples because I do believe very much you have a right to speak your mind. My only point was that it was classless of you calling Felton classless. Did you talk to the man or are you only going by what you read in the papers?

By Kevin Mull

February 23, 2006 05:35 PM | Link to this

geechee, I am just going on what the man said publicly. And I do think his comments showed a lack of class and savvy. An earlier post made a good point about Tubby being very active in the community. I was in school when Tubby was hired, and he came and shook every person’s hand that was waiting in line to buy student season tickets his 1st year. The perception is that Felton is not as fan friendly or as good at promoting his program, maybe he is, I just haven’t seen it and neither have others I have spoken to. I hope I am wrong about his coaching ability though and takes us to many NCAA’s starting next year. i would be glad to look like a fool if it means UGA is winning.

Kevin, I didn’t call you a fool and if you are one who regularly attends the games then you were not actually someone Felton was addressing anyway. I remember, when the Harrick debacle went down, thinking to myself that it would take UGA ten years to climb out of the hole Harrick dug for us. I thought of how tough it would be, for whoever the new coach was, to recruit players to a school that was on probation. Maybe you can but, I just can not picture how anyone else could have done this any better. Peace, brother.

Kevin, Get a grip. This the first year they have had enough scholarship players to actually scrimage in practice. To expect much more is foolish. Yes I have seen some of the games and I think that he could have coached better at certain times. But if you look at his overall effort I think you have to give him high marks. Even coach Wooden had moments you could question, and I am sure you probably would have had you been around to see him coach.
