UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Big wins needed for big dance
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Can Georgia do it?
That is the question. As coach Dennis Felton said Monday, making the NCAA tournament this season after last year’s debacle would be “nothing short of miraculous.”
And suffice it to say, getting there won’t be easy. The Dogs (14-9, 4-6) are at Kentucky on Wednesday, then they have Vandy and South Carolina in Athens, are at Missississippi State and Florida, then close the regular season against Arkansas at Stegeman Coliseum.
How many of those do you think they have to win? How many do you think they can win?

“nothing short of miraculous. It will take a miracle. They need to finish out at least 4-2 but will probably go 2-4. It takes time to rebuild a program. Still a good job by CDF this year. GO DAWGS!

The game at Kentucky this week could very well be an elimination game for both teams with regards to the NCAA Tournament. A win for Georgia would put both teams at 5-6 in the conference, but Kentucky has a tougher schedule remaining with road trips to South Carolina, Tennessee and LSU remaining, along with a home date against Florida. Our schedule is much more manageable with a road trip to Florida as the only nasty looking game left.
If we were to beat Kentucky (for the record I don’t think we will), we would have five games remaining, three of them at home, and one on the road against a bad Mississippi State team. The other is that road trip to Florida, which, let’s face it, is a certain loss.
But the other four games are winnable. We’ve already disposed of South Carolina and Vanderbilt on the road, so there’s no reason to think we can’t beat them at Stegeman Coliseum. Our last game of the season is a home date with Arkansas. We are not better than Arkansas, but they’ve had their struggles on the road under Stan Heath to put it lightly. That’s one we can definitely win. Then there’s the road trip to Starkville. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to go up there and defeat the young Bulldog team. But there was also no reason we shouldn’t have been able to beat Auburn on the Plains. Anything can happen on the road. Still, if you’re holding a gun to my head and asked me to make a prediction for that game, I’d take the Dawgs (the Georgia Dawgs, that is).
So what it really boils down to is the game in Rupp Arena this week. A loss, and our goal has to be to win a couple of games down the stretch to ensure an NIT bid. But if we can go up there and pull out a win, the NCAA’s not out of the question.
Still, even with a victory on Wednesday night, it’s an uphill climb to the Dance. We’d have to win all four of the “winnable” games to get to 9-7 in the SEC, which should give us a great chance for a bid, but would not make us a lock, considering how the SEC is perceived as being in a down year, and considering that we’d be lacking that “statement” win.
And although it’s certainly a possibility that we could beat Mississippi State, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Arkansas, we could just as easily lose all four of those games.
That loss to Auburn is looking more and more devastating as the season goes on, guys.

Thanks for the laugh Bill. Great post godawg, short and to the point. Hopefully they can get an invite to the NIT. It means absolutely nothing anymore but it would be a good experience for the team and give them a taste for what can come next year.

4-2 is most definitely what they need to finish out with, but those losses can’t be to both Kentucky and Florida. UGA needs some sort of “elite win” to qualify for an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. Alabama was great but it would take three of those wins to make up for whatever you want to call the Auburn loss. I would rather see this team go to the NIT because they do NOT have the post players to compete with most teams that will be in the NCAA tournament. They live and die by the guard play. It’s not Felton’s fault. It’s what the team does best. I said before SEC play that an achievable goal was an 8-8 conference record. That should still be the goal and that record would easily get them into the NIT.
Thanks a lot for raping the program Harricks.

I think the NCAA ship sailed around the time that Lofton hit his 24th three pointer on Saturday.
If the Dawgs want to dance, they need to win our or win the tournament. Even if they win out, they probably still have to beat UK, UT, UF, or LSU in the tournament to have enough good wins. We only have one win vs. the top 50 (Alabama). That’s not going to cut it.
It’s been a good run, but the best these guys can hope for is to get to the NIT at this point barring a miracle or a sweep of the SEC tourney.

Dawgs would have to win out to bae assured of a bid, but might get one with only one loss. They belong in the nit, work with their big men in the off season/inside game and wait on next yr for the “big dance”. Always seems funny to me that when Ky is down, then the sec is having a down yr. As long as Ky & another team are in the top 20, then the sec is having a good yr…Ky & 2 others means a GREAT yr. Well this yr both UT & UF are ranked and having good yrs, but because Ky isn’t one of the 2, then the sec is “down”. Stupid, but that’s the nat’l mindset & will always be so.

This team’s a hot-and-cold shooting team. That’s just the kind of team that goes into conference tournaments on a streak and wins them.
Or not.
I think we SHOULD beat SC, Vandy and Miss. State. But SC has played much better since we beat ‘em in Columbia, and Vandy could’ve beaten us in our road win, too…so who knows. Even if we DO go 4-2, I think we’d have to get to the SEC championship game to get an NCAA invite.
I think we should be pleased with an NIT invite, where again, a hot-and-cold shooting team is capable of getting hot and winning it all. It would be a good stepping stone for the program.

Oh yeah, since this is a UGA sports blog, no way is UGA making it to the Big Dance. They’re not even a shoo-in for the NITs yet. I’ve said this from the beginning of the year, and I’ll say it again: If these DAWGS make the NIT, consider this season a success!

you gotta think with 6 SEC games left, we can at leat win 3 to finish 7-9. 17-12 should get them into the NIT, right?

It makes me sick that Rotney Garner again used another team to milk out another pay raise! He is overated, and his constent shopping around rutine is geting old. Either you want to be a dawg or you don’t. Simple as that. As an ulumnas I hate to see my alma matter being treated this way by a ungreatfull outsider. Get rid of him and his salery and get somebody in hear that appreshiates UGA. Players come here to win a National Championchip and SEC titles, not because of coach Rotney.

First, on Rodney, I think the guy deserves every cent he gets not only for the recruiting he does but his d-line work is exceptional as well. Onto basketball, UGA needs 5 out of 6 and I think two in the SEC tourney to get in, two losses killing us right now are Auburn on the road and TN at home. We need a marquis win right now against FL. I think Vandy, SC, Arkansas and Miss St. are all winnable but as evidenced by Auburn I think at best we win 3 of 4 and FL and KTY both seem like losses most likely. I think this group is pretty close to making a nice run for an sec title and NCAA berth. Felton has done a nice job thus far. UGA as an institution needs to make a bit more of committment to the basketball team. Better facilities are a must.

Hunkered down “ALUMNI” boy - yeah go ahead and get rid of the only person to keep you in a game. Without Garner you would have no players, and without players you would have no chance. Your coaching sure doesn’t keep you in any games, just ask the West Virginia brokeback Mountaineers. If it wasn’t for your players we would have won 16 in a row, instead of 14 out of 16. Typical UGAY fan or “Ulumni”.

gator, once again you show your typical north florida ignorance. Sure you have beaten us 14 of the last 16, but we still own the overall seris lead. What does that tell you? I guess losing by 3 points doesn’t count as being in a game. But hey, Garner is staying so your whole post is pointless anyway

I think we have to be 17-12 in the NIT. And that isn’t necessarily as easy as it sounds. Let’s assume the losses to UF and KY, which means we have to go 3-1 against Vandy, SC, MSU, and Ark. Vandy will be ready to avenge the previous loss to UGA, SC could look like the team that swept UF, and Ark is a 50-50 chance at best. If UGA goes 16-13, they need at least two wins in the SEC tourney to go to the NIT.

Hunker I plan on making more money next year too. Don’t you. Looking at other offer as they are presented to further ones career is just in the business for assistant. Would you like the guy more if he left like VG did. Is Kirby Smart still a dawg for life, or not? Was Dooley wrong for seriously considering the Auburn job back in the late 70’s? Are you so sure those other jobs didnt come looking for them. I bet they did. While I think coaches need a large degree of school pride, you are very nieve to say its just a matter of wanting to be a dawg or not. Sorry, its a job, its a business, and big money. That why we are successful now, we treat it like a business too, rather than the old ways of giving jobs to loyal “family” as in the past. Are we wrong for looking to take the guy from VT?
I say great job for keeping the staff as intact as possible. Garner didnt milk a thing, we were going to pay him more this year like all the rest. If the paper hadn’t have made a big deal of it, you would have never known the diffence.

Don’t pay any attention to Hunkered Down. He’s obviously another nerd pretending to be a UGA grad. He’d have been a lot more believable if he didn’t go SO over the top with his misspelling and misguided sentiments. What can you say…no teams, no girls, no life, hanging out on a UGA blog. If he wasn’t such a dork someone might feel sorry for him and take him home….
Altamaha, I too hope to get a raise next year based on job performance. I’d say CRG performance this past merited a raise.

This Garner thing is just another reason not to send money form my pay check to UGA atheletics. I would rather my money go to facelities like improvement of Stegman then go to a coaches pay raise who aint gonna stay around long any how. Give coach Richt Garners pay raise! Florida fans who has the better over all record? Thats what I thaugt! WOOF!

No, only Techie Jackettes are allowed at the redneck Turdburgling Ball at Brokeback Mountain, created by Tech rednecks to be enjoyed by Tech rednecks, who’ve already spent their welfare money on their trailer time shares and loads of possum for the Jackettes to munch on. By the way Brokeback Mountain is where most Jackette recruits are from.
