UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Lineup change sparks spunk

Talk about a difference. The Georgia basketball team that summarily dispatched Alabama 88-79 looked nothing like the one that gagged at Auburn last Saturday.

Perhaps it had something to do with the lineup shake-up before the game. Dennis Felton decided to start freshman Mike Mercer at the wing position instead of Channing Toney and freshman Terrance Woodbury at power forward instead of Steve Newman. Mercer played 28 minutes and had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Woodbury played only 19 minutes but had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The lineup change also seemed to inspire Toney, who didn’t shoot particularly well but fired off a team-high 14 shots and was 2-of-8 from 3-land. He reached double figures (12 points) for the first time in five games.

Obviously that is a smaller lineup for the Dogs (13-8, 3-5 SEC) but it worked against Bama, which has a huge frontline in Jamareo Davidson and Richard Hendrix. After that horrific loss to Auburn (1-6 SEC) they’re going to need to steal some games down the stretch if they hope to play after the SEC tournament. So should Felton stay with this lineup as Georgia embarks on the second-half of the SEC schedule? Can it win at Vandy’s goofy Memorial Gym Saturday? Is there any way they get to .500 in league play?

Stay with the lineup. Yes, they can beat Vandy in Nashville. Besides, you’re guaranteed one half of Felton being able to scream at Mike Mercer head on to be patient. That should help a little. Can they get to .500 in league play? Sure. Will they? No. I’m sticking with a 16-13 (6-10 SEC) record this year. That’s good enough to get into the NIT and will give Felton something to build on for next year.

I agree with the 6-10 SEC assessment, maybe 7-9 at best. As I have said before, any success this year is gravy for the next couple of years (although it was still tough to watch that Auburn loss). These guys are gaining invaluable experience and will be tough to beat next year and in two years especially if we can get an inside presence.

Which brings me to my second point. The Bama win probably had less to do with a line-up shake-up and more to do with the team actually making shots. It is no secret that if the Dawgs don’t shoot well it is going to be a long night because there haven’t been many second chance opportunities this year, other than the Ole Miss game.

I love Indrisi. Just looks like a really determined guy who will blossom if giving more playing time. I also love Newman but the only time I like to see the ball in is hands is for a wide open three. Bliss and Newman just seem to turn the ball over too much. Woodbury is the right choice. He is physical under the basket and has shown nice touch on the midrange jumper. Him and Indrisi could turn into a really good tandem over the next couple of seasons. The big difference in this game was the Assists. I think they went 4 or 5 straight games with less than 10 assists. This game was over 20 and it is reflected in the score.

the roundball dawgs are improved,no doubt but i would love to see these guys string together 4 or 5 games with the same high intensity.this team has a lot of untapped potential,if they can come together and remember the “team” concept.i’m not selling these guys short,i think they can still do great things THIS year IF they can pull off 3 or 4 quality ROAD wins.is anybody else noticing the trend that they look very good at home and sometimes like a totally different team on the road.
