Are you NOT going home for the holidays?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Isn’t it ironic: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has 1,300 new parking spaces, yet Thanksgiving travel is projected to be down out of Atlanta this year.
Would-be travelers who are feeling the economic pinch might not go home for the holidays this year. Are you one of them? If so, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter might contact you.
Let us know if you’re keeping it close to home in Atlanta instead of traveling to see friends and family this year.

What with my 401k in the toilet and my job security at an all-time-low, I’m staying here in Atlanta instead of heading to Denver where the rest of my family is this year. While flights have been cheaper, I’d rather stay here and work to make some money, than risk my savings and my job taking a trip and vacation. Maybe next year!

I do not think it ironic that parking spaces are up and Thanksgiving travel is down. The spaces were created for an ongoing need and not a single holiday.
What I do find ironic is that in recent years, local school districts have created a calender that gives students the entire week off for Thanksgiving. At first I thought this was a good idea, so families could take more time to travel and spend time with relatives during the Thanksgiving holiday. What I have come to realize, is this school break is actually an annoyance to many families. Many parents only have thursday off from work, or thursday/friday of Thanksgiving week. This creates headaches for parents who scramble to find childcare for younger children. I for one, hope my school district alters this school vacation on next years calender.
With that said, I am not going anywhere for Thanksgiving. The reason has nothing to do with the economic pinch, my family rotates hosting this holiday and this year it is my turn. I do however, plan on scaling back and hosting a more casual and economical dinner. We are thinking of participating in the Gobble Jog and taking a hike at Kennesaw Mountain for some cheap entertainment.

I will be staying home for the holiday. With the economy the way it is and a daughter in college with tuition due the second week in December we can’t afford to travel. I will cook a big dinner with all the fixings and watch some football.

No we are not going anywhere for Thanksgiving. We just got back from New York due to a death in our family - we’re just going to stay at home, have an oven stuffer (for those of us who are not familar with that, it is a chicken that was overfed for that purpose!) and the other fixings and watch some football.

YES, YES, YES, for the first time EVER I get to stay home. No travelling. However, I only travel 20 miles to my mother’s house. But we are celebrating Thanksgiving with her and the rest of my family this Sunday.
I have a four day weekend, and nothing to do but lay on the couch, watch football and drink beer!!!!! I did buy a small turkey, but I don’t know if I’m going to cook it or not. We may just eat left overs from Mom’s. Who knows. I don’t HAVE to do anything!!!!!

I am staying home for Thanksgiving and this will be the first time in years, but I am looking forward to it. My kids are a little disappointed, but I told them we will put the tree up and I will take them see the lights at Stone Mountain or Lake Lanier. I just quit my job to work from home and have more time with my kids, so expenses must be cut.

No, I’m staying home again for Thanksgiving because both of my parents are deceased and my brother and his family are going out of town.
Will sleep late and make a sandwich and watch some TV.

After looking at my checking account, I’ve decided that I’m staying in Atlanta for holidays. Maybe, I will go see my great aunt and uncle for the New Year in Columbus, GA.

I’m not going to make it home for Thanksgiving or Christmas…I simply can’t afford it. Flights are crazy, then I’ll need a rental car…the only perk is being able to stay at my mother’s place. Living 1200 miles away from home really becomes real during the holidays, especially when your only option is to get your ticket in July when it may be affordable, or if you have the guts to drive. Driving 12 hours is no fun alone. So, I’ll be making rounds at the homes of generous friends, and spending Christmas in my PJs watching the marathon of A Christmas Story.

I usually stay in town and enjoy a wonderful “orphans Thanksgiving” with various neighbors in my neighborhood, this year I’ll be in Germany. Not for Thanksgiving per se, but it falls during my stay. We’re prepared, though — I’m bringing cranberry sauce and stuffing and my friends in Munich have located a couple of sources of turkey. I’m sure it’ll be a wonderful holiday even without being able to watch the Macy’s T-Day Parade.

JillG the reason for the weeklong school break is so families can DRIVE to where they are going, rather than having to endure the expense and hassle of flying. I will be hostessing this year (now that my mother has passed it is my turn) but all my family will be driving to get here. Can’t wait to see the grandchildren!

If you are single and over 40 there is an inexpensive way to celebrate Thanksgiving at home. Come to my singles socials on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and Saturday after Thanksgiving. Go go www.selectivesingles.org and check them out! Stay in town and have tons of fun!

I don’t have any family left, and I’m still single (unfortunately), so I often spend holidays alone at home. sometimes it’s lonely but I’ve gotten used to it. Though I think to invite over other single friends. somehow it ends up being a day of just chilling home alone. I could partake with friends who invite me over, but I often don’t; it’s “family” time. Besides I don’t need the thousands of calories :-). But everyone else, ENJOY!!

I have not gone home for the Holidays for years. The prices are jacked up and the hassle and crowds are not worth it.
