Tell us your favorite southern beaches
Are you a sun-worshipper, a castle builder or a wave runner at the beach?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We finally got the Outer Banks sand out of our swimsuits only to head back to the beach to get them gritty all over again. The girls hadn’t seen my folks since Christmas, so last week we were off to St. Simons for a visit and a bit more sand before school comes round.
St. Simons is my comfort beach. It’s the beach of my childhood, and where all of our children dipped their toes in the ocean before they could stand on their own two feet. It will always be a favorite.
It’s also the place where I developed my beach-going style. Some people plop down on the sand with a good book and an umbrella and stay there all day. They may occasionally walk over to the water and cool their feet. Others are sand people. They dig; they build; they bury. I’m a water person - always have been. Forget the umbrella and the book. Keep your shovels and pails. I just throw a towel somewhere on the sand and jump in the ocean. I could spend the entire day in the water.
William is an all-rounder at the beach. He gets in the water, jumps the waves, then builds an elaborate sandcastle with the kids before relaxing for a while on the sand. After two or three hours, though, he’s ready to go. Our oldest and youngest daughters are mostly sand people. They will venture into knee-deep waters, but are happiest building sand cities and plotting elaborate ways to protect their architectural masterpieces from an ever-advancing Atlantic Ocean. Our middle child is my kindred spirit. If you find her out of the water, she is clearly being punished.
Some beaches are better than others for different kinds of beach bums. Honestly, my daughter and I much preferred the wild waves on the Outer Banks to St. Simons’ calmer waters. Those who like to spend the day sunning or people-watching on the beach probably prefer places like South Beach in Miami or Daytona. Sand aficionados might choose the fine white grains on the Gulf Coast.
What are your top three southern beaches? How do your favorites suit your beach style? What IS your beach style? How do you travel with beachgoers who have opposing beach interests -i.e. you want a quick trip for a dip in the water and they seek an all-day love affair with the sun? Do you have a favorite seaside spot that has it all - good waves, good sand, good people-watching and plenty of activities around for those not inclined to spend the whole day with sand in their swimsuits?

St. George Island is where we spend our family vacations. We love the laid-back atmosphere. It is the very antithesis of places like Myrtle Beach. Just a quiet, sleepy little island that is perfect if you want a relaxing vacation. There is not even a stop light on the island! The beach is fabulous and the fishing is awesome. My husband and I love sitting on the beach with our daughter, building sand castles, chasing the birds, collecting seashells, etc. This summer, we got to watch the finishing touches being put on a lighthouse that is being restored. It is going to be a wonderful addition to the island. My daughter and I cry when it is time to leave. We have had so many good times as a family there. Can’t wait to go next year!

I LOVE St. Simons Island, and hope to maybe retire there one day……
Any beach is fine with me. I am planning a trip to Treasure Island next fall, with my puppy. I am dying to get to St. George Island, Cape San Blas, etc. I have co-workers who to go St. George every year.
Of course, I like Panama City Beach (mostly with the kids), and Destin too. Basically any beach makes me happy. I’ve been to the west coast, east coast & Gulf coast…….

Hollywood Beach near Miami has been redone and it’s a real honey of a beach now. On down to Key West you’ll want to go to Zachary Taylor State Park Beaches to play and watch all the big boats come in to port and all the other sights at the Southernmost beach. I never get tired of the Red Neck Riviera down in Gulfshores Alabama. Sugar sands and the FloraBama Bar when you get thirsty.

I have a sentimental attachment to Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach. During the 80’s and early 90’s this was my family’s vacation spot and I could hardly wait to go each year. We rented a condominium at Amelia South and had many good times there. The historic district of Fernandina is very charming and the local historic sites such as Fort Clinch make this place a nice balance between beach and other touristy type stuff. Jacksonville and St. Augustine are just a few hours south for a nice day trip as well.

I just got back from a week at Jekyll Island. My daughter and I had a great time. The beaches are beautiful and uncrowded. There’s a very slow pace to the island that I love. There’s plenty to do both on the island and close by. We visited the sea turtle center and took a turtle walk one night (it’s nesting season). There’s a water park on the island, the historic district, mini-golf, tons of bike paths, and golf courses. We took a day trip to Cumberland Island and did some shopping over at St. Simons. I was surprised at how much traffic there was on St. Simons. I was glad to get back to the peace and quiet of Jekyll. The island is close (less than 1/2 a tank of gas to get down there from Atlanta) and a relatively inexpensive week-long vacation. We are planning to go back next year.

Hilton Head is the only place for a relaxing laid back beach trip that has all the amenities of food, golf and entertainment!
Otherwise, Myrtle Beach has it all depending on the your location!

Hi guys — I’m definitely going to have to check out St. George. I tend to spend my beach time on the Atlantic, but I love the “sleepy little island” kind of vacation. (That’s one of the reasons I liked Ocracoke, NC so much.) Thanks for the tip Kathy!
Georgia beachgoers should check out this article on ajc.com. It highlights the “cleanest” beaches in terms of water quality on the Georgia coast — and the worst offenders. Overall water quality off Georgia beaches is improving, so that’s good.
JJ — Massengale and Fifth Street beaches had the best water quality off St. Simons. Have you been to SSI lately? Lots of changes — they have built a new bath house with a concession stand at East Beach, totally rerouted Demere Road, and put in a new roundabout at Demere and Frederica. The county also demolished the Casino pool by the lighthouse, which is very sad. I always loved the diving boards there. My mother is absolutely distraught — she has been swimming in that pool since she was child.

St. George is the best on the Gulf.
Bald Head Island is the best of the lower barrier islands - just south of Wilmington NC.
Coralla is the best of the Outer Banks - wild horses, big beaches, lots to do and not at all honky tonky.

My favourite beach is in the South alright —- the South of France. Anytime I have an opportunity to escape these American Neanderthals from the so-called “great American South,” I grab it.
Tahiti, Sicily and Capetown also rank as my favourite beach destinations. Basically, any place where Americans are few and far in between.

South Jersey, glad you like your beach, but I think the article mentioned favorite “Southern beaches”. Nevertheless, as a child, we frequented all the small beaches that now make up the municipality of North Myrtle Beach. It’s grown a lot, but I still love it. It’s not the most “beautiful” beach, but continues to have its own culture. Love beach music and shagging. You won’t find a nicer group of people there. As for second, I’d go with Hilton Head. The East Coast has the waves I love. If I’m going for beauty, I’d look at SeaSide on the Gulf. Sand is beautiful (albeit too hot to walk on at times), and I love the clear blue water.

My favorite is St Joseph Peninsula State Park in Florida, next to Cape San Blas. There is nothing to do there except play on the beach. No tourist money sucking attractions like Panama City. If you like to sit on the beach all day, read a book, play in the sand, and water, this is the place. The beach is just over the dunes from the campground, so you can take your umbrella and chairs out in the morning and leave them all day.
We are going back labor day weekend. It is quiet and peaceful. there are always plenty of other kids around for my kids to play with. Since only the people staying in the cabins and campground are the ones at the beach, it is not crowded.
Plus Apalachicola is only 30 min away with fresh oysters and seafood.

Pensacola Beach is it for me and mine. My mother and two older sisters were born there, my father served in the Navy there, my Grandfather help build the naval base….I learned about Geronimo and things well beyond my years while exploring the dark corners of Fort Pickens as a young girl. My life long love of the Blue Angels started the first time I heard them roar overheard during their annual 4th of July(ish) show over the beach. I have watched Santa Rosa Island transform from an unknown, barren beach with sand dunes 2 stories high….to a bustling tourist location with laid back southern appeal. Pensacola beach is my home away from home….I hope to retire there :)

Just visited St. George Island for the first time this year and loved it. Of course, my all-time favorite beach is on a tiny island in the Atlantic. But since the only lodging on the island is about 10 rental houses, I am not telling where it is! I wouldn’t want someone else to take my spot next year. As for beach style, myself, my husband and my kids are all water lovers. I will occasionally read a book on the beach but mostly we just want to play in the water. We will not ever go to a place like Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, or Panama City Beach. We like privacy and nature.

Great blog! I enjoyed reading about everyone’s vacation spots. My grandparents lived on St. Simons when I was a child and I spenT my summers there. I don’t enjoy St.Simons now because it is too crowded. Jekyll Island is much more peaceful. If you enjoy gambling, There is a boat named the Emerald Princess that goes out everyday. Even if you don’t gamble it’s a nice ride.

Please be quiet about St George Island!!!
We have had to move from Seagrove to Grayton and now to St George to escape all of you people and now your following us again!
Ignore all of the post about St George, it’s a cesspool with dirty beaches, all of the rentals have roaches and other nasty things, the locals are rude and its not a family place at all with all of the partying teenagers.

Hands down… Boston Bay, Jamaica. Romance, isolation, no tourists ‘cept me, and plenty of soft white sand and cocktails. Had my honeymoon there, and I yearn to go back every year to find an old friend that always comes thru for me…… (wink, wink)
Growing up in sunny Miami, I relished the lazy days of summer when even tourists found it too hot to go beaching. From time to time I would find the isolated beaches in S. Fla. intriguing and delightful. I would find an older hotel that is less flashy and has plenty of vacancy is a nice place to grab some “me” time and soak in the sun and maybe have a dip in the warm waters. No need to rent a room, just park the car and grab your towel and find one of many un-used chaise lounges, and make it a go. I loved packing a lunch, and after a nice swim, have the entire beach to myself while I enjoy my sandwich.
You never know what you may find floating to the shore either!

After growing up in Myrtle Beach, and leaving 29 years ago, I’ve visited quite a few beaches and my favorites are varied. I love Pawleys Island as I have roots there. My grandfather owned a big chunk of it many years ago and my grandmother’s family were “pioneers”. Litchfield is wonderful too. Main Myrtle, no way. Too commercial and too Branson. My favorite beaches are on the Gulf. I LOVE the white sand and clear water. Will be in Destin next week. Sand Key near Clearwater is my favorite. Destin proper is now too built up. We go down to Seaside/Rosemary to escape the commercialism. Very nice state parks in that area. West Coast fav is Laguna Beach or Manhattan Beach. One day we will check out St. George. Agree with previous blogger, don’t brag too much or the high rise gluttons will show up. I hear it is something special. My least favs are Tybee, PCB, Myrtle and Daytona.

Grew up going to St. Simons every year for at least a week or two as a kid. I think the island has gotten too crowded and full of yuppies since then. Still like it though.
Among my faves; Ka’anapali on Maui, Hanauma Bay on Oahu, Palma Nova in Majorca. Would like to get to Sannibel too.

Sanibel Island, FL is the best! They have more seashells too. You folks can keep your beaches on the Florida panhandle. Nothing but crowds and too many terrible rip currents!! I got caught in one in Destin five years ago, and I knew someone who drown in a rip current six years ago in Pensacola Beach. I vowed never to go back to the beaches on the panhandle.

CBL Hanauma Bay on Oahu - ah the Keyhole. I remember swimming there just about every day while we were in Honolulu for 6 weeks, back in 1971. I remember when the tide would go out, you could actually walk on top of the soft coral. I had a piece of that coral for years, but lost it in one of my many moves.
I remember that place like it was yesterday…….

Hilton Head, SC is a great beach. it is clean and family friendly. Traffic near the beach is slow and manageable. Prices are not too bad and the selection of beachfront condos is decent. After going in August twice we may consider another season, though. Jellyfish are a problem in August.

Used to be Tybee was our number one spot, but haven’t been there in years. I hear it has gone down hill. Sad.
We have been going to a tiny place our friends own, between PCB and Cape San Blas/St. Joe’s called Mexico Beach. Quiet, no commercialism, though I think they are building some medium rises.
I hope we can begin looking for our own place to buy in the coming years. Got lots of researh to do. May end up in one of the NC outterbanks region. Or one of the quieter SC isles. Not sure.
I am a combo beach bum: love to lay out get some sun, then sit under a tent to read and people watch, then into the water after getting nice and hot. I tend to get sea sick if I stay in too long—the motion of the waves. Even floating on a raft or tube for too long does me in. So then back out to start the cycle all over. I am not into the sand. I guess I did enough of that as a young girl in Hawaii, when my parents taught me how to bury my feet, legs, and dad would bury them for us. I think I remember feeling claustrophobic. So sand other than having it to lay, walk or run on and be part of the beach picture, I don’t do.
Any info on purchasing a beach place is welcome. I would love to hear from any who have or who are looking.

Easy. Padre Island National Seashore, TX.
Once you get past the developed north part, the only way to access the rest of it is with 4-wheel drive. My advice, fly into Corpus Christi, rent a Jeep, and camp out under the stars. Even in the middle of summer you might see 4-5 people a day, tops.

With ‘ya fellow Gamecock on the Edgewater (cool bldg) and Busters, not Brewsters in Destin. Check out the oyster happy hour! We will be there on Tuesday! On my list too is Folly Beach. Cool, small downtown area, and walking to the beach is easy. Used to eat at the little seafood place (Anchor Line?) before the bridge, but they closed. It puts Dewey Destins to shame, but the same idea - only difference is Anchor Line had a roof! Good and cheap! My cousin worked there. Sullivan’s is lovely too! I hesitate to mention my fav beach…since none of you seem to know about it! It’s LA—lower Alabama, a.k.a. Gulf Shores. It’s so pretty! The water is calm, clear, and beautiful. The condos aren’t huge, so there’s plenty of room to spread out. You can leave your canopy up all week and no one bothers it. The restaurants are great (favorite is Sea n Suds). My college aged kiddos still love it. We sit in the waves and read all day long, unless we are taking a castle-building break. When the waves are up, we are in them too. We go out early and stay all day…we are sand and water people. Thank goodness all my kids love the beach like I do. After a long day at the beach, it’s off to find raw oysters and fresh shrimp or crab claws. Mmmmm mmmm! Heaven on earth!! I went to PCB this summer too; first time in eons…bleh!!! Dirty, nasty, crowded beach and the water was full of algae (and garbage). Yuck!

Went back to Hilton Head earlier this month after a five year absence. It’s a great beach that is very family friendly. It seems like “villas” (ie condo rentals) have actually gone done in price, even though they are still pricey. The number of people staying on the island during our week long trip has exploded over the last four years and half of them seem to be from Ohio!! Restaurants have gotten even more expensive and the quality of most places has gotten worse.

After years of bouncing up and down the panhandle from Cape San Blas to San Destin with stops at Panama City, Seagrove, Mexico Beach and other spots, we moved our vacations to the little village of Cherry Grove at the top of North Myrtle. Other than the proliferation of high rises, this is still a sleepy little beach town and is the perfect spot to visit in the early fall when we go.

The best beach in the world is Dog Island, next to St. George. No restaurants, no stores, no people, nothing commercial. You can only get there by boat or plane. 15 full-time residents, the Pelican Inn is the only place to stay. Nice and clean, no crowds at all, Dog Island makes St. George look like Miami Beach. If you want solitude, Dog Island is the place to come. Went there this summer and it was absolutely a trip back into old Florida.

Just google it in, and read the praise from guests.

It is great that we have so many beaches within easy reach.
I enjoy my fun in the sun from Rosemary Beach all the way over to Gulf Shores.
Each town and beach area has its own vibe. The stretch along 30-A can spoil you with some amazing restaurants. Destin and Fort Walton Beach can let you be a teenager again.
Pensacola has history to offer to balance out the sand. Orange beach and Gulf Shores have the state park that is my favorite for walking trails.
