Girlfriends on the go
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Can “Sex and the City: The Movie” do for girlfriend vacations what it did for cosmopolitans? Manhattan’s favorite fictitious gal pals hit a Mexican resort looking swell in bright, cheerful dresses, windswept hats and earrings like Alexander Calder mobiles.
They get their drink on, they soak up the sun — the only thing that’s missing, for obvious reasons, is the vacation fling with a handsome traveler.
The movie paints a great portrait of female friends on vacation, with little of the bickering, check-splitting folly or other problems that often plague friends living in tight quarters.
The Travel Channel offers Ajc.com readers a new vacation page, Girlfriends Getaways. We want to hear your “girlfriend getaway” stories. Do you vacation with your closest friends? Does it create wonderful memories or homicidal thoughts?

there are precious few friends that I would even think of planning a trip with because I know we are all laid back. You can’t travel with any ole friend! All our trips are wonderful memories.

I go on a yearly Girlfriend Vacation every September, with 15 girls. We rent a house outside of Charleston, SC, on Isle of Palms. We have the best time. This year will mark our 6th trip to Charleston.
Since there are so many of us, we have all kinds of activities planned. Some go shopping, some go on tours, and all of us go crabbing. Never thought I would enjoy being up to my knees in mud along a river bank in marshes, with a piece of raw chicken at the end of 25 feet or string, trying to catch blue crabs. When we are finished, our Captain cooks all the crabs for us on the beach, and we eat and drink our hearts out. Man that’s fun!!!

I love it when a bunch of single drunken chicks get together to damn men and lament their sad, lonely lives. Then, when one of them manages to snag some equally desperate schmuck, she forgets her inebriated b*** and abandons her estrogen crowd.

I’m one of a group of 7 girls (all married and over 40) who get together for dinner once a month as well as 2 or 3 weekend getaways a year. We all get along great, have similar interests and have a GREAT time every time we get together. We can be just a great group of silly girls being girls every time we get together for these special times.

I am hoping to start a getaway or retreat with a group of married women who are good friends. I think it is a fabulous idea.

AJC, y’all really need to add a “spam” button to these comments so weeding out the porn links becomes a reader initiative.

Girlfriend getaways always create wonderful memories, even if there is an occasional homicidal thought thrown in now and then - depending on the time of the month;) We have been doing these for years, and then my friend thought “We should really help other women do this too”, so she started this company:

Now we still get to go on girlfriend getaways, but it’s considered “research”!

I like to vacation with groups of people becuase the more the merrier! I do have one rule - * I am on Vacation and no one will spoil my vacation* You have to set some ground rules and decide if you want a room mate or you would rather pay an extra few dollars for peace and happiness. I say keep an open mind and don’t hesitate to stray away from the pack to avoid the “drama” that comes along …. remember your on vacation and anything goes…..

New Year’s has become our single girl’s getaway. Each year for 5-8 days a group of us leave the country to celebrate, relax and refresh for a new year. It’s easy for everyone to get time off work. We plan 7-8 months out before rates go up. This year 10-12 of us are going to Buenos Aires.

Girls weekends and girlfriend getaways are good for the soul and are often just what we need to send our stress packing. We all have busy, hectic lives these days and our girlfriends understand that and need the escape as much as we do. Let’s not forget that friendships need maintenance just like everything else in life and getaways are great for reconnecting and strengthening bonds. The destination and activities aren’t as important as the company. That’s why my site, [www.girlfriendgetawaypackages.com]= www.girlfriendgetawaypackages.com , offers planning tips, packages and fun for all sorts of getaways and get-togethers.
