To evacuate or not?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
About one in three residents of Southern coastal communities say they would not evacuate for a hurricane, according to a new Harvard University poll. Their rationale? They believe that their homes are safe and well-built, that roads would be too crowded and that fleeing would be dangerous.

One Harvard professor said he thought the increasing complacency was the result of a mild 2006 hurricane season. What do you think?

What makes you so certain it is the I.T. Dept.’s fault and not just DFU’s?

I agree, AJC’s blogs suck big time.
As does the AJC itself.
Oh, and we don’t really care about what people in CA think, that state defies logic to begin with…..

No storm or hurricane is predictable I have no problem with a moron wanting to ride out a storm,But if there are minor children involved they should be charged with child endangerment. Katrina demonstrated the unpredictabilty of a major storm. My wife and I chose to ride out Andrew in FT. Myers but we sent our children to my Moms in Atlanta. The answer is no I wouldn’t ride out another storm.

I have no problem with people wanting to ride out hurricanes so long as they:
-Don’t subject minor children to their foolishness. -Don’t expect others to save them should they be in a life threatening situation they could have avoided. -Don’t complain when their public services aren’t back up in less than a week.
If you want to make a stupid decision, don’t expect others to risk their lives to save you!

I have recently moved down to the Coastal Georgia region from Atlanta. My house is in the flood zone, but is about a mile off the coast. I am not sure if I would evauate or not if there was a hurricane warning. I think that I would have to be in the situation to decide. It has been so long since a hurricane has hit my area, that I think myself, along with most of the people down here, are in the “it won’t happen to me” mindset. With my job, I am required to come back as soon as the hurricane or other natural disater is over in order to inpect the damaged structures. Therefore, I don’t think that I would bother leaving.

If the stupid people make the decision to endanger their lives, perhaps it is better that their children don’t make it as well….Darwin and all that….my $0.02.

If people want to live in a vulnerable area, they should assume the cost of insurance and not expect a government bailout, especially for a vacation house on stilts (been to Nags Head lately? aren’t the stilts a little hint that water might be a problem?) and by the same token if they want to ignore an evacuation order, they shouldn’t expect anyone to risk life and limb to save them, or even to put themselves out to get their utilities back up and running. It’s called taking responsibility for your own actions and used to be a bedrock value.

If folks don’t want to leave, let ‘em stay.
If they then get stuck, tough.
Let ‘em die.
Praise Jesus!
