Best sushi ever!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Who would have guessed Indianapolis has an excellent sushi restaurant/bar? I just returned from taking in some of the holiday celebrations there, and that was just one of the surprises in this friendly Midwest city.
Have you stumbled across an unexpectedly great place to dine in your travels, particularly one that doesn’t seem to fit with your preconceived image of the city you’re visiting? Can you share your discovery with the rest of us?
Sushi on the Rocks, at 235 S Meridian St., in Indianapolis served the best sushi I’ve ever eaten. Granted, I haven’t been any of those pricey New York City “in” sushi restaurants — the ones where you pay in the hundreds of dollars to lift your chopsticks. (I, frankly, am not that stupid when it comes to spending money.) Sushi on the Rocks opened this spring just below the ICE Lounge, where celebrities gather when they’re in town. If you’re heading to Indianapolis and you like sushi, stop in. (Tell them AJ sent you and they’ll be scratching their heads for days, wondering if that’s A.J. Foyt.)

Have you been to Nobu in Las Vegas? Or Nobu Next Door in Manhattan? Or MF Sushi or Sushi Avenue in Decatur? I wonder how those compare to the place you liked in Indiana.

I haven’t been to MF Sushi, but I’m told by our former dining critic John Kessler that it’s the best in Atlanta. Decatur is on the other side of the world from where I now live in west Cobb; when I do manage to get there for dinner, it’s with a longtime Decatur friend who’s not fond of sushi. I’ll have to make a special trip to try MF.
