Photos galore
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Two days into the winter Travel Photo Contest, and I’m thinking, WOW. We’ve received more than 200 photos, and some of them are really knockouts. This is going to be a tough year for judging, I can tell already. You’ll get to see some of the finalists next Monday.
So, here’s my annual reminder: Please read the rules to make sure your photo isn’t eliminated. Two common mistakes are 1) the photo wasn’t taken at least 100 miles from your home and 2) the photo wasn’t taken within the past year (Nov. 1, 2005 to Nov. 30, 2006), and please submit only one photo in each of the three categories.
Meanwhile, I’d like to hear about the best travel photo you’ve ever shot. What did you do with it? Is it, like some of my photos, enlarged, framed and hanging on a wall in your home? Did you give it to friends or family? Did you enter it in a contest and did you win? Many of the photos I’m seeing in this year’s contest are very close to art.

Hello, I have one question about the contest. I have travelled extensively and love nothing more that to take pics of other cultures. However, all of my photos are black and white. I would love to enter the contest, but the rules say that the pic must be color. Why is that?

Hi John
We ask for color photos because they reproduce better in the newspaper. The beauty of black and white photos is often in the shading and shadows, as well as the composition. In newsprint reproduction, those subtleties often disappear.
I’m sorry you don’t have color photos to submit. I bet you have some excellent photos.

I guess this fully pegs me as an AMATEUR photographer, but hey… that’s what the contest is about, right?
How the heck do I save/export a JPEG to 200 dpi (as specified in the rules)? I’ve come across dpi settings in printing before, but not in saving out to a JPG.
Thanks,
Charlie

Hi Charlie
Sorry for the delay in responding; I took a vacation day Friday to volunteer my time for the annual Southeastern Regional DanceSport Competition (ballroom dancing).
Anyway, you should be able to just compress the photo and upload it with the photo tool. The 200 dpi is a mystery to me, too, but that’s the resolution we need to reproduce it at a decent size for the newspaper. As long as the file is fairly large, it will be 200 dpi. Hope this helps?
