Traveling this fall?

Carlson Wagonlit just released a survey of its travel agents on the top domestic and international destinations they’re booking for the rest of 2006. Georgians are being consistent with their domestic choices: Las Vegas and Orlando usually rate 1 and 2 with New York close behind; this year, they all tied for first place. Next were two islands of Hawaii, which also ranks high with traveling Georgians — Honolulu, Oahu, and Kahului, Maui.

Internationally, we’re still cruising the Caribbean (ranked No. 1) or visiting Cancun (No.2); tied for No. 3 are London, Riviera Maya, Mexico and Rome, Italy. But we’re also branching out a little — I don’t remember Budapest, Hungary making the list in years past — it’s tied at No. 7 with a whole slew of destinations: Athens, Greece; Bermuda; Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, Mexico; Europe (Mediterranean) cruises; Florence and/or Tuscany, Italy; Nassau, The Bahamas; Nice, France; Prague, Czech Republic; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Venice, Italy.

Where are you headed this fall? Did you take a trip more off the beaten path this summer? Or do you love Las Vegas, Orlando and New York and try to go at least once a year?

I personally love visiting Las Vegas, Orlando and New York, but just don’t get there very often — there’s too much to see and too little time to return to the same place year after year, even when they’re great destinations. How do you feel about that — like the comforts of relaxing in a place your know or need the excitement (and sometimes headaches) of exploring someplace new?

This Atlantan loves visiting New York City. The food, the sights, and the excitement make it my top choice.

Its quite refreshing to hear educated Democrats slam George W Bush on a variety of issues.

Then I have to come back to Atlanta where every other SUV has a ‘W’ sticker on the window. MORONS!

I personally enjoy going to new places because there are so many things to explore. Last month I went to South Dakota for a week. That might sound weird to some people however there is so much history and beautiful scenery it turned out to be one of the best vacations I have ever taken. Seeing Mount Rushmore in person goes beyond words. I definitely recommed South Dakota. We started out at the eastern end of the state and if it wasn’t for a forest fire in Wyoming we would have went all the way over there to Devil’s Tower and completed our trek across South Dakota. Go there’s nothing stopping you!

Hey Pubs Lie, last time I checked Delta is STILL ready when you are. Georgia is a RED state, and if you still long for the days of Bill and Hillary (or God forbid, John and Ta-ray-za Kerry), PLEASE move.

Costa Rica is a beautiful and inexpensive place to visit. Lots to do and see and it is only a 3.5 hour flight from Atlanta. The people there are great as well. Highly recommend it and will be going back ASAP.

Hi Jeffrey

South Dakota is on my list of places to see, and eventually I’ll get there. I think Mount Rushmore would be awesome to see in person. I can’t imagine undertaking that project, knowing it would be years and years to completion.

We just watched “North by Northwest” again, and the Mount Rushmore finale is entertaining.

I love visiting Colorado. From skiing in winter to hiking and camping in summer… from sightseeing at such great locations as Pike’s Peak (near Colorado Springs) to the scenic railroad and back up to Rocky Mountain National Park. Then, there is Denver with plenty of do… ranked as the top place to live for singles… but this old married man likes it too.

I spent 2 weeks in Alaska on a land/sea cruise and had a blast. Denali National Park was awesome. Also got to pan for gold in Fairbanks and also did a little whale watching, too. And as far as South Dakota is concernd, don’t forget to hit the city of Wall. The drug store there is wild. Badlands National Park is cool too.

Don’t know how the Democraps and Retardicans managed to monopolize a question on travel. Sad. Eventually the primitive two-party system will die, and America will be free of stupidity again. They have managed to drag down the greatest human ideology ever to be conceived: Capitalism with a subservient representative government.

As for travel destinations, Long Island, NY (Suffolk) is the best place domestically. Internationally, Florence, Italy. I am surprised to see that the plebian populace of Atlanta is cultured enough to appreciate the latter. Or maybe, the dummies just want to take a picture next to the boar. How I long for the days of the Medici.

We love to take quick trips to the Florida Panhandle - Destin and Panama City. PC is no longer the “redneck riviera”, as most of the old motor lodges have been leveled to make way for towering luxury condos. It was a welcome change!

Club Med in Port St. Joe, Fl. is a great all-inclusive resort. We went last summer with a group of 47 people, 24 kids, 23 adults. There were so many activities, not enough time to do everything. The kids of all ages were entertained, and we didn’t have to worry about them on the property, especially the teens, we saw them at breakfast, lunch and dinners, and NEVER hear the words “I’m bored” from one single kid. Once we arrived we put our wallets and purses away, we never had to open our wallets. Everything, the accommodations, food, booze, and activities, tips, etc. were all included in the price, and since there were so many in our group, the price wasn’t bad either. I highly recommend it to large groups.

Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. “Mountains of Fire”, in Parque Nacional De Timanfaya. Take the walk through the park, some of the most spectacular volcanic country anywhere-make sure you are in decent shape. Majority of trip was spent in the northern/western part of the island-fewer tourists. Truly, unique.

Southern part of the Island comprised of beach resorts, with european tourists roasting themselves on the beach- just a little much.

NYC as a vacation hot spot “Hey, forget about it”. Destin is much more relaxing if your not looking for adventure.

I visited Cartagena, Colombia and the Colonial Architecture is just stunningly beautiful. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site which is an award bestowed to fantastic cities and sites. Not too many americans visit because of the “percieved” danger of Colombia but Cartagena is definately not dangerous and never was uncomfortable during my 7 days there. Rosario Islands off the Carribean Coast of Cartagena, Colombia was an excellent day trip for snorkeling, diving and beautiful soft powdery white sand/crystal clear blue warm waters. The cuisine there is excellent and SUPER CHEAP. Most of the visitors come from Europe & other South American countries since there goverment’s don’t overhype a perception of danger like are State Department does for Colombia. If you have a chance definatelt visit, It’s a very romantic place as well to take a loved one or if your single there are plenty of ladies available in Cartagena! The restaurants are beautiful and the colonial buildings and scenery mixed with exotic beaches and spanish, african and european culture make it an interesting destination indeed!

I agree Cartagena, Colombia and the Rosario Islands are a great destination. Felt safer walking the downtown streets there than I did in my own downtown. Cartagena does have that safe feeling, wish I could visit some of the other cities Colombia had to offer.

San Francisco is also a favorite of mine. Tons of stuff to do in the city. Drive down US1 through Big Sur, Monterrey, Carmel, and San Simeon(?) and tour the Hearst Castle. Tour wine country. You will run out of time before you do everything the city (and surrounding area)has to offer.

I have to say that the Highlands of Scotland hold a special place in my heart. My wife and I are looking to go again next year and renew our vows for our 10th anniversary. We are going to have the ceremony in either an old castle or on the shores of Loch Ness.

Heading to Belize for the Labor Day Holiday. Have heard great things about the people, diving,a nd fishing. Had a great trip to Boston over the summer to see my beloved Red Sox. My two boys are now cursed with being fans. Nothing better in sports than 40 thousand singing “Sweet Caroline” in the 8th inning.

Visited Stonington, Maine, for the first time this summer. Incredible fishing village on a beautiful island, lots to see and do, on the water and off. I’m going to the panhandle of FLA this October to relax for a week, great time to be down there. Water’s still warm and the weather is perfect, and there’s no crowds.

Brazil. Although expensive Delta tickets make it an initial tough sell, daily expenses are less than half what Europe would be - and no Jet Lag. Daily Non-stops to Rio from Atlanta make it easy. Go north into Minas Gerais for coffee country and baroque masterpieces.

Spent 3 weeks earlier this summer in Eastern Russia and Mongolia. Lake Baikal was beautiful and you can not beat the scenery of the Kamchatka Peninsula. I find it amazing that I can visit the high praries of Central Mongolia and there are natives there talking on cell phones. The railroad schedule was a bit problematic but we eventually arrived at our destinations.

Rock City never fails to beckon us back. We discover something new each time we go there. Don’t waste your time on Ruby Falls though because it has gone commercial and is phony as they come.

I only see one San Francisco and it is a great place. Beautiful and much to do. The best day trip is the Fery to Sausalito and lunch on the terrace of the Alta Mira Hotel. Just try to ignore the political leanings of the citizens. Vancouver is also wonderful.

My wife and I will be the lighthouse keepers @ Rose Island Lighthouse in the Narragansett Bay of Rhode Island this November. One full week living in the 1800’s! Prior to that, a day in Gettysburg, and two in Boston, my favorite New England city. Returning home through NYC and Washington D.C., I can hardly wait!!

I visited Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Olomouc in the Czech Republic and also Krakow, Poland. I’ve seen much of Western Europe and wanted to experience something new. I would highly recommend both Prague and Krakow—as both destinations avoided any significant damage from WWII. The Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and the old Jewish district are just a few of the places to visit in Prague. Krakow’s main square should be the envy of any major city—not to mention, the unforgettable yet somber trip to Auschwitz nearby.

Well, in the past we’ve gone to Ireland in the fall - best time to visit - great cool weather and alot less people.

This year we’re hoping for a trip to Quebec City. But whether we are able to pull that off or not, we are going to enjoy some more local sites and have rented a cabin in the Georgia Mountains for the beginning of leaf season!! You don’t have to go too far from home to relax and see some real beauty.

To DHD - we wish we were going to Ireland, but unfortunately can’t make it this year, but we too will be enjoying the Irish Coffee, on the porch of our cabin in the mountains. Hope you enjoy yours and I will mine!

I, too, love Sarasota. We go down several times a year to visit my husband’s family or to see the West Coast Symphony. It’s a great little city, and I’d consider retiring there except it’s gotten so expensive to buy a home — I think others have discovered its many charms. Or maybe it’s just because it’s in Florida and all the Boomers are retiring and moving south.

Far and away is the only way and the more exotic the better! And by exotic, I do not mean Bali or Maui. How about this summer heading to Northeast China to visit the Hezhe People who used to wear fish skin clothes? And collect two outfits for museums in Canada with a good friend? Now that is interesting——for me. And yes, they still smelled like fish!

Next it was Mongolia to Lake Khusovol to see the last of the truly nomadic herders, the Reindeer People and to have a short ride on an agreeable reindeer. Children racing their small horses across wide open plains, sheep shearing, mare milking and snuff snuffing, all made for a terric five weeks with two friends, a Russian jeep and guide! Gers or Yurts were our nightly motels and luxury compared to the overland bikers we kept running into on their special adventures across Mongolia and beyond, if there truly is a ——- beyond!

Having lived in Rio many years ago, we are going back in November to down a few Caipirinhas on Ipenema and enjoy the samba music and see old friends. It will be early summer and a perfect time to visit. Just remembering to leave all valuables at home and in the hotel’s safe!
