This is decidedly a place for the mentally challenged lazy peasantry who have NO interest in exposing themselves or their ilk to any kind of sophistication. On the single day/night I spent there watching the ‘white trash’ phenomenon it was infested with pigeon chested pasty puckering yoofs and long haired self absorbed teeny airheads preening themselves in daddy’s car(s). All of them labouring severely under the mindless delusion that being a sheeple made them look “cool”. It is a desolate crowded place - that irony is no doubt wasted on the usual brainless party obsessed crowd. The actual beach isn’t too bad, happily I saw dozens and dozens of sharks swimming around expectantly? in the jet ski area while I was parasailing. Incidentally parasailing there is a rip off - its a shorter time than advertised and quite a ‘low’ ride. This grasping attitude reflects the vile commercialised culture that is all pervasive. Other than the hotels full of noisy bratty brats and a few mostly pretty poor restaurants and tourist trap shops and a few uber cheesy ageing touristy places there is surprisingly little in the way of facilities. Much of it is old now and other than a number of half completed/abandoned new condos/hotels it had nothing to recommend it. I was there three years ago at a busy time - it may have improved but I doubt it. Its a long long drive down the concrete hotel strip - seeing a surfeit of identitkit clones of a certain age/mentality makes it seem even longer when the ‘cruising’ crowd is out.

It’s on the rebound. Was there last year, and would love to buy property now. The old hotels and shops, and even the amusement park (wow!), have been replaced by high rise condos. It will look like Sandestin (or atleast Destin) in the next 5-10 years.

I’m originally from Atlanta and have lived in PC Bch for the last 4 mos. If you want a quick weekend trip it can’t be beat; 5 hrs and you’re here. I much prefer the beaches of Europe that I left a couple of months ago, but a beach is a beach, if you want stuff to do, stay in the city. The restaurants are great, if you know where they are, skip out on old Captain Andersons and drive 300 yards past it to the Boatyard. It’s excellent.

You couldn’t pay me to go back to Panama City Beach. It makes a dump look inviting. It’s nothing but white trash staying at dumpy motels and driving up and down traffic-clogged Front Beach Road with stereos blaring late into the night. As far as the Redneck Riviera goes, Destin or Pensacola Beach, particularly the national seashore, are a world apart from PCB.

Once there was a place called PCB and it resembled paradise. That place is gone. My family vacationed there several times a year during the 50’s - 90’s. None of us go there with any regularity anymore. In the 1960’s there were two amusement parks, great fishing, and beautiful beaches with crystal clear gulf waters. In the 1970’s a condo building boom spoiled the view along much of the beach. For whatever reason, a green algae muck began to cloud the waters during a few weeks of the summer. Each year, its season grew longer and longer. Now, the “June grass” as locals call it can be found most anytime during the months of May to October. It makes swimming and fishing nearly impossible. Goodbye clear waters. Commercial fishing and the unsavory shenanigans of the deep sea captains ruined the fishing industry. (Yes, we really do see through all of their tricks) Goodbye fishing. Petticoat Junction closed years ago, and in an act of civil suicide the locals let Miracle Strip close last year, That was the only attraction PCB had over any other beach. I drove my family through PCB during Spring Breaka nd it was so very sad to lament the place it used to be. I don’t think the locals get it. Those new condo towers only make matters worse by destroying and hiding the beautiful beaches. But hey, this is a town that actually got a US highway moved inland a few blocks so skyscrapers could be built along one of its last strtches of unspoiled beaches. They’ve killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.

the Emerald Coast is beautiful. with it’s sugar sand beaches and calm clear water, it’s our version of the Caribbean - and it’s less than a six hour drive away. the best times of year to go are March-April-May & September-October. the summer is nice too but the water may not be clear if the sawgrass / “seaweed” has bloomed. for 15 years, we’ve had a place 8 miles west of “the Strip”, and it’s very quiet down there (just before Front Beach and Back Beach roads / Hwy 98 converge and go over the bridge into Walton County). i go snorkeling and kayaking in the Gulf and the spring-fed lakes and always find a new place to explore. maybe once each visit we’ll go eat at Captain Anderson’s or Shuck Em’s on the Strip, but we prefer other places, and cooking out fresh fish from Buddy’s Seafood.
i’m guessing many people posting here about the Redneck Riviera they experienced while in Panama City, were really looking for something more upscale. it’s too bad they didn’t do their homework and find something better than a high rise amongst the throng to rent for the week, regardless of where they vacation. regardless of all the nice amenities the facility may have, it’s all about squishing your toes in the sand and watching and listening to the waves, right?even though PCB is rebuilding, it’s all high rises and will be too crowded. i honestly don’t think they could even fill the number of rooms they are attempting to build. the prices have skyrocketed in the past few years and the speculators are now getting hosed because there’s too many places available for purchase.
if you want your kids near the action, then deal with all the bs that goes along with it. you know what you are getting and don’t complain. people have been cruising the Strip since way before you came along. if you want to have a laid back vacation on the gulf, surf the net and find something else outside of the strip. the kids can go down there a couple times, and you’ll have a great time relaxing at the beach. Cheers, I’ll be down there this time next week!!

As many of you stated earlier, my family and I always vacationed on PCB due to it being the nearest to home. We went many many times during the 70’s and 80’s. Once I started having my own family in the mid 80’s I too sought out the familiarity of PCB. Each time we went the area got progressively worse as far as the “clientele” that it catered to. On our last trip, in the early 90’s, my children could not even get in the pool area for stepping over drunks, literally. This was in a “higher” class resort! The pool and beach areas were filled with teenagers, young adults and older adults who were drinking, making out and just generally being obnoxious. We vowed that would be our last exposure. We have driven through the area since then and it just seems to be a vastness of aimless, mindless sex and alcohol that is in your face. It’s not the family place it used to be. Luckily we now live in Clearwater Florida…a world apart!

My wife and I are about 30 yrs old, and have been going to PCB for years now. The place has really changed over the past 2 years, and has grown more upscale and pricy. You still get the rowdy kids, just not as much as previously. We tried Destin a few times, but there always seemed to be more action around PCB. Peoplewatch, great ribs at Willy’s, good bands…and only 5 hours away. It can’t be beat.

I enjoy PCB about every 5 years or so. I can only take it for about 4 days. Like most posts, it is very quick and easy to get there. I like taking the kids, as there is plenty for them to do. We stay off the main roads, due to “cruising”, and I am on the other side of that now, having my own teenager. This year she will bring a friend, and I won’t have to do much entertaining, just keeping a careful eye on them……I like Destin, but the traffic there is ungodly. Two hours from one side to the other…..

For us, Panama City has gone to the birds. And people call this a vacation spot? To much traffic, to many people. We have found a much better place to call home to a true vacation in the FL panhandle. It’s called St. George Island, FL just outside of Apalachicola, in the bottom of the panhandle. A.K.A the Forgotten Coast

If you want to go on vacation and party, PC Beach is awesome. The beach on the night of July 4th is the wildest place I’ve ever been. Plenty to do for kids or grown-ups. If you want to go on vacation and not be around crowds of people enjoying themselves, then maybe you can find a retirement community on the beach to vacation at. I’ll see y’all at the Summitt Tiki Hut……

Could time for the truth be any more of a fun sponge? It doesn’t seem someone that bitter could have fun anywhere! PCB is a lot of fun if you are looking for beach, good food, an relaxation. If you are looking for sophistication, then I blame you for not doing your research and for going to PCB, truth. You aren’t going to exactly find the Louvre, MOMA, or five star dining there. But is a great weekend getaway to soak up a few rays! If you are going to suck the life out of the room like time for the truth, don’t bother coming!

You have to be really careful along the “Forgotten Coast” too. We used to love to spend a week in Mexico Beach every Spring. The last time they had a bad red tide episode. What made it much worse was the dead fish washed up on the shore and what made THAT worse was the indifference of the hotel people. When dead fish pile up on your money-making beach, you dig a trench, rake in all the dead stuff, and bury it BEFORE the swarms of flies form. Mexico Beach was too lazy and we cut our vacation short because the flies made it horrible.

My modest little post was a factual deliberate sardonic mocking of the place. I was fully aware of exactly what the place was like long before I chose to endure it for 24 hours, en route elsewhere. You ignorantly associate sarcastic erudition with “bitterness”. Christ knows why - I was just actually having some fun with words, whilst conveying a pretty decent pen picture of the place. I naturally tend to assume that you are some kind of airhead type that’s intimidated by smart folks, otherwise you wouldn’t have been quite so personal in your remarks. Never mind eh - we all have our way of having fun!!

Well how interesting that this article comes out and me and some friends just got back from PCB last night!! It was the first time for all to visit this part of Florida, and by and large it was just alright. I mean, there was nothing, literally, to write home about. The beaches were nice, save for the the nasty green muck of algae that one has to wade out to shark territory to avoid. The crowds were normal North FL crowds….the kinds that give reason to why the area is called the Redneck Riviera.
At the risk of sounding elitist, all in our group were overcome with elation coming up I-85 North and getting that first view of downtown Atlanta when you pass the airport. It was just so trashy down there! I mean, so many teenage girls were preening themselves and were so air-heady. I saw people without shirts on at the Winn-Dixie on Thomas Drive and grown adults with no shoes on at the Dollar General right next door (and to think, that these people actually cross the parking lot in bare feet…ugh!). Loud children who had no formal manners were rampant. And in the words of my partner, “Why is everyone here so obese? We’re at the beach for Christ’s sake!”
PCB is great for those who have no problems with the ‘culture’ down there. I however will be frequenting the beaches further south, i.e., the Caribbean! Cheers!

I went there for years. Used to go several times a summer, but not anymore. When it became just another trap after my money. Example: While shopping at a store I looked outside as they were attempting to tow my car from a spot that stated “reserved for customers”. Then came the outragous parking fees to use the beach at a very popular bar and spend allot of money in that bar while there. Not me. Not anymore.

That’s exactly what I have always thought PCB was and it’s the reason I’ve gone in the past and still go. What’s better to relieve stress than get loud and drunk on the beach? If you want to go to bed at 9pm, visit a retirement village in Kissimmee or something.

This beach is not for the world travelers. It is for the ordinary people who enjoy going the the beach with or without children. We have been going to PCB 1-2 times per year and stay at the Holiday Inn Sunspree and we have never seen drunk people laying in the pools or as some of you say rednecks that are being out of hand. The one time we did see an episode security was there in 30 seconds and was escorting out the so called white trash from their hotel. If you don’t like the area then stay out, as for me and my family we will return as usual every year.

PCB has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past several years. The far West end of PCB is by far the nicest part of the beach. New condos have taken over the beachfront. Pier Park wil include major shopping and entertainment soon. And - an international airport may be built around 2008. In terms of bars/food, the Boathouse is a great find - near Capt D’s. Also -Thomas’ donuts on the West side is a must. The beach is as beautiful as ever.

I just moved back here from PCB 2 years ago. The place has very much changed from the old days when we would vacation. They are trying to get away from the “Redneck Riviera” image, but a dog wearing a pretty dress is still a dog. It is a good place to visit (there are better down there-will not tell because then they will get like PCB) and October is the best, but it is an awful place to try to make a living. The people are the best, and trust me the locals do not like the changes any more than everyone else, but the developers put alot of money in the good ol boys government pockets.

Anne and Clete,
That was truly very very funny!! Ignorant aggressive (likely obese) peasants like yourself are there in life to provide entertainment for the rest of us.
I note that you did not even attempt to refute ANYTHING I or traveller said about the place. Others said above it was a redneck place and that’s absolutely true. PCB has about as much class as Krystals or a Hall County Wal-Mart. And I absolutely dislike shallow middle class snots as much as I dislike oafish blue collar types. Sadly ordinary pleasant people are getting harder to find these days. You either get mindless religion rammed endlessly down your throat or for the weak minded the alcohol/drug culture beckons.
I am not ‘elitist’, I just cannot stand loud empty mouthy party morons who impose themselves and their shrill, spoiled/narcissistic “my kids never would do that” brats on everyone else. I guess the pen picture I painted above was way too close to home for you, never mind eh!!

I am 55 years old and I’ve been going to PCB since I was 13. I love it…. yes, it has really changed in the last 40 years. Yes it’s gaudy, yes it has more than it’s share of tourist traps, yes there’s lots of (sometimes drunk and rowdy) teenagers, BUT the white sugar beach and the turquoise water is unmatched! All of this is part of PCB’s charm…. to me it is indeed the Redneck Riveria and all that that entails. To me, “going to the beach” means going to Panama City Beach, and probably always will. (I do mourn the loss of the Amusement Park)

I have lived here in PCB for the past 4 years now, and I am a tickled by some of these responses. You can’t judge an area because you visited for 3-5 days and expect to come to your conclusion. The MAJORITY of the people that you see walking and running around with no shoes and no shirts, they are tourist just like yourself. We people that live at the beach invest in flip-flops, and we don’t walk around public places barefoot. So believe it or not, those kids that are running around out of control, those are more likely to be your neighbors and not mine. As far as the redneck area, yes you are correct, people here are very laid back, and needless too say have been here all of their lives. This area is undergoing a huge renovation and it is for the better. For anyone that knows anything about progress, it takes time. ATL was not built overnite, someone had to put plans in place and bank their money were people would go. For those of you that don’t like the area, take it off your destination list. However, in a few years when the renovations are done, and the area gets cleaned up, which I have seen what they are tearing down and what they are putting up. The less people here visiting, the less amount of time I have to stand in line at Wal-Mart.

A cultural icon for a certain element???? That element would be people that like to go to the beach and have fun. So what if there are some rednecks. PCB is in Florida, after all. I’d be shocked if there WEREN’T any rednecks. I don’t think they’d want you there anyway.

I have been going to Panama City since I was 6 or so. I am now close to 50 and I still enjoy going. I love the beach, people and The Stuffed Flounder at Capt. Anderson’s!!!! My Wife and I spent our Honeymoon there, how damn redneck is that? It is like a home away from home for us. We have proudly exposed our two boys to the joys and wonderment of the “Redneck Riviera”, they love it. My 11 year old likes the scantily clad redneck trailer trash chicks too. It’s all part of the charm! For all you elitist snobs who want to trash PC just stay away! That means shorter lines at Andersons and LaVela, lol!

I’m an ATL native (really) who lives in Panama City. Panama City is a town on the east side of the Hathaway Bridge (that’s the NEW Hathaway Bridge for non locals.) Most people who live in Bay County don’t go “over the bridge” for many of the above mentioned reasons. We ARE close to ATL, (which along with Sav and NYC) is where my teen daughters like to go during spring break, but after reading some of the alarming posts on this and the “Should I take teens to Spring Break?” blog, I’m reluctant to say where we go and what we do. Try off the beaten path, and try Panama City.

Our families from Texas has been vacationing on the beach since mid 1980’s. Started staying at the dunes of panama building c 2nd level corner. family from georgia owned that property. Should have bought a condo next door when building E went up. Schooners was a favorite. We like the treasure ship better than Capt Anderson’s. We also like Mikato. Forgot the steak house name that has the big bull out front. It is so very expensive to go there now. Now that we are taking our grandchildren now, we really miss the small town feel. We love the mom and pop stores. Rude people running those shops now. Sorry to say feel better going to dollar stores and wal mart than Alvin’s and all the other beach stores. There is a place we like to eat breakfast, Coram’s. Really we do not eat out a lot we want to spend all the time we can on the beach. cook out and eat, and run back to beach. we do not even do any sightseeing anymore. it is all about the beach.
