My way or the highway?

Speaking of roadtrips, when you have disagreements about how to plan a road trip, how do you compromise?

One of my co-workers used to take a two- to three-week trip, caravaning with his family and his brother’s family to historic sites or monuments, with the itinerary planned down to the minute, including bathroom stops. That would drive me crazy. For vacations, I prefer to do a general outline with interesting stops along the way, but no set time to get there, and no hotel reservations. My husband is not as regimented as my co-worker was, but he’d rather be more structured, with hotel reservations all set. But that means you have to keep more of a schedule.

How have you handled this disagreement in styles? And have you mellowed with each successive road trip you’ve taken together?

I find that with a flask for each person and a joint or two in constant rotation around the car, the problems seem to just melt away.

Plus, planning it as you go is vastly better than having a prearranged plan that you stick to…the best road trip experiences are ones that you don’t plan for, but just happen upon while you’re on the road. Going to southern New Jersey? The traffic’s getting bad, you’ve never been to New York before, and you’ve still got a nice sack of reefer, why not give it a shot?
