I Survived Spring Break ‘06
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well, I’m back in the office after my Spring Break adventure in Panama City Beach. I would’ve written sooner but I had more than 600 emails to deal with!
Happy to report that we all made it back safe and sound and the kids had a great time. I appreciate all the great comments and advice you offered before I left. A lot of you were right on my wavelength; others proved to be more or less permissive than me. But it was all good.
One of the girls drove the five others in her mother’s van. (Not exactly a Girls Gone Wild kind of ride, huh?) Now I was styling, leading the way in my convertible, glancing frequently into my rear-view mirror. (I felt like one of those escort vehicles that clear the way for Wide Loads.)
The kids were really well behaved. Loud at times (like 3 a.m.), but well behaved. That is, except for the water balloon incident. Yeah, got a call from Security at about 12:30 a.m. saying they’d had reports of a water bomb being lobbed from our balcony. I assured them I would take care of the situation. I clambered out of bed and told them they were busted — and that I was very disappointed in them. They sheepishly apologized. And there was no more mischief. (That I know of!)
They slept late, hung out on the beach and pool area most of the day, then went out to dinner every night (without me) and were back before midnight. That doesn’t mean they went to sleep. The first night they played Monopoly (loudly) until the wee hours. But, hey, that beats cruisin’ the strip and whooping and hollering till all hours. They really demonstrated a lot of maturity and did not betray my trust in them.
They wanted to check out Club La Vela’s Teen Night on Tuesday, but when they got there and found out the cover was $25, they decided they’d make their own fun. Heck, they spent more time at Wal-Mart than anywhere except the beach. A couple of the guys even played a few rounds of goofy golf. The one girl who threatened to get a belly piercing chickened out. (Good thing, since her mother would have killed her — and me, too, even though I had no idea what she was up to.) They talked about getting henna tattoos but never got around to it. Not exactly a wild bunch.
Me? My big outing was when I had lunch with Jayna Leach of the PCB Convention and Visitors Bureau. We ate grilled grouper at Schooners on the beach and then she showed me all the new development at the beach. (It’s amazing what’s going on down there — goodbye Redneck Riviera.) We even managed to squeeze in a little retail therapy at the Liz & Jane Company Store.
Another day, I took myself “out” for shrimp at Sharky’s, which is smack on the beach. And went back to Liz & Jane.
So, tell me: How did your Spring Break go?

I have three beautiful grand daughters. The twins are 10 and big sister is 12.They lost their mom almost 3 years ago so they are special to us. We took them to PC Beach for a few days. They had a ball even though one of the twins had a broken arm. We got back to GA. at 3am wed. morning and took them to the aquarium in atlanta. we were a little disappointed with that.On thursday we went to our lake house for the remained of the week and spent the day at the hospital on Friday to get Stormie’s arm reset. But we all had a great time and are so blessed that we can spend time with our little angels. They all three look just like their mom my first borned. My two girls are 15 years apart. I am 59 years old but can do as much as the girls want wheather it be to go to mcdonalds at midnight or to go swimming they know that their nanny and Big daddy are here for them. We look forward to many more spring breaks together.

My spring break was real dull since i put off my trip to panama city. My trip to PC is scheduled for May 11-15. Some give me the topthree seafood restaurants at PC Beach. Hopefully the crowds will be slim at this time. I want to get ahead of that summer rush and behind that spring break rush. I’m not big own crowds.

We have a condo in PC and are there several weekends each month. We also eat out A LOT. Our favorite restaurants are (in no particular order) …. Fish Stock (it’s where Ruthie T’s used to be and still has that sign out front.)Try the crab bisque. Uncle Earnie’s (over the bridge in St. Andrew’s)Cute old house, ask for an outside table. Captain’s table is nearby if you want good oldfashioned fried seafood. Very kid-friendly. Canopies (for a romantic dinner if money is no object) Hooks at the Treasure Ship (good for lunch especially) Boatyard and Schooners are great for drinks, appetizers and music, but the meals aren’t all that wonderful. Montego Bay is also good for lunch. Pineapple Willy’s (ribs and a great Cobb salad that will feed two.) Teddy Tucker’s on the dock at Baypoint used to be good, but we haven’t been there recently. Quite frankly, I think Capt’ Anderson’s is very overrated, overpriced, and is not worth the wait for a table. If you’re looking for seafood to take home with you try Cardenas on Thomas Drive. Very good quality and they’ll pack it in ice for you. Those are our favorites in PC. If you’re up for a trip to Destin for dinner that’s a whole different article. :)

About the seafood, take it from a local of 30+ years, Captain Anderson’s IS worth the wait. Ask to eat the Scamp Imperial. It’s absolutely heavenly. Cardenas on Thomas Drive is excellent for take-home seafood as is the Market at Captain Anderson’s.
If you venture in town (into Panama City) Uncle Ernies is decent, Canopies is OK (pricey), but Captain’s Table is great. No frills, just good seafood. You also might want to check out the Fish Net on Highway 77 right in the middle of Lynn Haven. Again no frills, just great seafood.

Uncle Earnies is one of my favorites. If you go to Grayton beach try the Redbar and ask for the crabcakes. I don’t think they are on the menu you just have to ask about them. yum yum
Oh yea Krystals after a night is the only way to go.
