New wardrobe for Delta attendants
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Delta, which is struggling with bankruptcy, just unveiled new flight attendant uniforms. SEE PHOTOS Designer Richard Tyler says they evoke “the classic age of travel.”
Is this the right time to splurge on new uniforms?
And, besides, what about the style? Is it timelessly elegant, as Tyler says, or too 1950ish?

They could wear a suit of armor if it meant that I could actually use some of my SkyMiles.

What was wrong with the old ones and did anyone really notice what they wear to begin with. Smart business move, no wonder they are broke! What next “throw back” era pilots?

I guess given Delta’s “timeless” flight attendant force, this move should be greeted with open arms by those who will actually wear them! Now, how about letting me use some of my miles!!!

No wonder the company I work for is going broke. Are we actually paying management to make these bone head decisions?

I can see the writing on the wall. Look for Delta to come up with a new livery (paint scheme) for their A/C. Not to worry though, I bet they have a Q and A session to discuss the new uniforms. Jeez, even when these bankrupt companies don’t have enough money to replace carpet, they find thousands if not millions to pay a designer.

And just how are these different from the thousand other outfits these people have worn over the years? Except that they are red? And how can Delta afford a fancy designer when it’s in bankruptcy?
Seems like Delta management still doesn’t have its priorities right.
Polite. On time. Customer Friendly. If you want to get better bring back the Red Coats and give them back all their power!

I think it’s great! They need a breath of fresh air and a little “hipness” wouldn’t hurt either. If the employees feel better, it will lead to even better customer service. Go Delta!

The new uniforms are nice, timing is horrible though. What “regular” person revamps their wardrobe during a financial crisis?!? It would have been a great time to unveil the new uniforms- along with job security and salary reinstatement, etc.- while announcing the success of Delta’s Chapter 11. Too many people have lost too much for this not to seem ridiculous!!

I know the FAs detested their old uniforms. I haven’t met one that like it. Hopefully with the FAs input these uniforms will be functional, comfortable and make them feel somewhat stylish (as stylish as any uniform can make you feel).
If the FAs are happy, I’ll be happy. Or at least not totally grumpy when grounded on a spring weather delay.

Delta’s current management is scary. Cramped seats, more tin-can regional jets than any other major airline, grumpy employees … but now let’s pretend everything back in the glamorous days of flying with a new uniform. Sounds like a house falling apart getting a new paint job on the outside.

I thought they were going broke. I seriously doubt that new uniforms will improve their customer service. How about giving me back the 24,000 miles I lost on 12/31/05. Get real Delta. Do we care what flight attendants wear?

I kinda like it — very stylish and I thought the FAs in the photos looked great. Obviously, you don’t need to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic, but I doubt a new wardrobe is putting Delta over the edge. After all, if not this, they just have to replenish their stock of the old stuff…

Are they going to be sewing several of those uniforms together for those grouchy dinosaur flight attendants? If delta wants to improve customer experience, start by getting rid of those flight attendants that hate their job, and only use it for the free flight perks.

I think the new uniforms are nice - very classy, elegant, much nicer than the older ones which, to be frank, made me think K-Mart more than Louis Vuitton. However, as someone mentioned earlier, this is very poor timing. I’m sure the decision to get the new uniforms was made years ago, and it’s not Delta’s fault, but still, it doesn’t look good to the public. On the other hand, it should inspire confidence that an airline about to go out of business would not be buying new uniforms.

why would Delta spend that money on uniforms instead of giving it to the employees. The uniform surely won’t improve the flight attendance looks, they just not what they used to be. Now how about the PILOTS! YES BABY! THEY ARE OOOOOOOOOOOOLALA! and they don’t need new uniforms OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLALA!

Funny, Southwest is #1 in customer satisfaction, but I can’t for the life of me recall what their flight attendant’s wear.

Both my children have been working for this company for sometime. I was always proud of that fact, because over the years Delta has been a great company. I was always taught to suck it in when times were lean and work like heck to get back on track. These so called excutives do not deserve to be called management. They aren’t worth a sack of salt. After reading about this earth shaking decision, I look for Delta to go the way of Eastern and Pan AM.

How appropriate, RED uniforms. Maybe Gerald used all the red ink that Delta is bleeding to dye the uniforms that color? What was wrong with the old uniforms anyway and why does anyone care what they are wearing? The last interaction I had with a Delta flight attendant was when she requested that I close the overhead bins in my section before takeoff—something that they used to do.

The uniforms sure look nicer than the current prison guard uniforms they wear. After 5 years of BAD news, pay cuts and the like, a nice new uniform might help morale a bit. Which might get you that second bag of peanuts with a smile.

Just another example of another stupid decision that this company has made. They are dressing up their 70 year old flight attendants to make them look like hip-chicks in their 20’s. They look foolish. I see that at least they strutted out their skinny senior mommas, as opposed to the fat cows who make up the majority of that work group. How silly are they going to look with their belly rolls crammed into a “European Cut” ? Here this once proud airline, who is run by the most incompetent group of airline management in the history of the industry, has made yet another bone-head deciscion that is also a public relations nightmare. Delta is going out of buisiness, and yet certain parts of this company hasn’t figured that out yet. Does it really matter to have new uniforms? I could care less what think tank supports whatever feel-good message that this is supposed to bring, it’s a waste of money, period. When you are bleeding to death, you don’t open another wound. This along with countless seat changes on aircraft, and “shuttle” aircraft that are meant for “shuttle” service, but are put on Cross Country Flights, and Countless paint schemes. Whatever the heck that is that Delta is Doing on B-Concourse that no one can figure out what it is, is just another example of the lack of direction that this airline has. It’s going in twenty different directions at once, and it is confusing as can be to the traveling public and everyone involved. The company is bleeding it’s self dry, but seem to continue to find a way to spend money hand over fist that it doesn’t have. From the slashing of the Maintenance Department and outsource maintenance to Mexico (does anyone remember the Valuejet debacle?) to sending 1000’s of jobs to India (a hot button topic with the american public) which infuriates callers who can’t understand a word “Floyd Umpanjampuckietarnemaondemsoodmamooood” is saying. You would think that whoever is in charge would reign in cost and set a single goal for this once proud airline who is spiraling down the drain of bankruptcy.
Maybe when all else fails, they’ll cut salaries again.
Why is it that multi-billion dollar companies are run by MBA’s, but someone with a High School Diploma can plainly see that these High Paid Execs have their head up their @ss …

They DO have to buy their own uniforms and they do look classic, but a waitress is a waitress is a waitress. I don’t care what they wear as long as I can afford to fly. I frankly don’t understand why people think it is entirely appropriate to abuse a flight attendant when they wouldn’t think of treating a waitress or waiter in a restaurant with the same rude distain. They don’t have to take crap any more than anyone else.

Absolutely stunning! Is this the time to spend money on new uniforms? Well, sometimes companies need to spend money to make desireable changes to entice more business. It also will help the employees feel better during such trying times.

Listen you fools. The FA’s have to pay for there own uniforms. The only thing this has cost Delta is the fee paid to the designer and his firm (equal to about what new tires on a single plane cost) which by the way was mostly paid for nearly three years ago before banruptcy was an issue and oil prices were dramatically lower! This, though it may seem unneccesary at this time, has been in the development stage for quite a while and if you’ve already paid for most of it you might as well use it. If anything maybe it will give the people at Delta a way to hold their chin up a little higher during these troubled times. What’s wrong with Delta is not this frivolous crap, it’s the Captains on the 777’s making $250/hr and the retiree’s who are bleeding this company dry because of decades of Union demands that were unrealistic and selfish, ala Ford and General Moters. I’m from Atlanta and care what happens to Delta for God’s sake, you could show a little more respect.

Stupid is as stupid does. Regardless of who pays for the uniforms, it’s either a waste of money or a waste of time and focus or both.
Dear Delta Senior Mgmt: We frequent flyers don’t care what the flight attendants wear! We want ontime flights, clean planes, reasonable fares, and a decent experience when we get on your airplanes! Focus! Focus! Focus! Otherwise one might conclude you’re all idiots!
I have been a Delta Platinum flyer for 12 years. There are still a lot of great people working for Delta, I fly with them all the time (Delta has the International Business class crews, hands down). It is sad to see this once proud company run down the tubes.

They should go out of their way to make sure their FA’s are happy and comfortable (who cares what they are wearing, as long as they are smiling and taking care of the folks on the flight). Spend all that $$ that they’re wasting on the new unis on making sure folks baggage ends up at the right place at the right time.

A lot of company’s that are required to wear uniforms have a yearly “uniform” budget to replace old and damaged uniforms, so maybe Delta is wisely using this opportunity to add much needed style back into Delta’s history! I think they will have much success and aspire Flight Attendants!

I GUESS THE POINT BEING WHAT CONTROL???
I object to your remarks B Williford - trying to blame this on the pilots - the terrible UNION pilots - has caused a lot of unnecessary dissention and stress at a time when everyone should UNITE because divided we’ll fall and somebody needs to understand that part!!

I have heard it all from the cry babies that cannot use there skymiles to the ones that want the extra bag of peanuts. Grow up, the last time I went to get my car serviced it was not free and they never gave me anything that I did not pay for. The uniforms were decided a long time ago and the Flight Attendants have red accents the agents have blue and the crown room has gold. The current uniforms can be returned to the Sheraton Hotel as we have been put on the bed for many years for you all that come into our offices (the plane) and trash it, ask for upgrades and think we have a mission that God or the Devil is running the ship. Buck up and grow up. I say you get respect when you treat others with respect.

Why didn’t they select pink? That would be appropriate since Delta’s stock was delisted from the NASDAQ and now trades on the pink sheets! Seriously folks, how much time and focus have they put into this? Far too much is the answer. Delta should take lessons from Ford Motor Company and restructure/rightsize the airline to match the market. Not dress it up with some two-bit red poly-blend “uniforms”.

I am a Delta employee and the majority of us DO NOT WANT this hideous uniform. Not only will F/A’s get the new uniforms, but also the ticket/gate and crown room agents. Our hideous dress is blue unlike the F/A’s red. The red dress only goes to size 10, so those big senior mama’s will not be in them. There was no problem with the old blue uniforms we wore before these charcol one we wear now. We would prefer to keep what we have and that money be put in our pensions or just get us out of bankruptcy. WE DO NOT PAY FOR OUR UNIFORMS. Each employee was allotted $400.00 for these new uniform pieces, now multipy that. Forget that we have taken two pay cuts in 2005, we pay ALL of our insurance costs, we have NO pension, we are threatened day in and day out by management if flights take a one minute delay, if we don’t charge for excess bags, managements solution is to send us home for a day without pay, and don’t let the plane pull in and we are not standing on the cold jetway, you got it, sent home without pay. So, these new uniforms are going to boost our morale huh? Think again. Our morale is under the airport, buried, it is not low, it is non-exsistent, so I don’t think these bell bottom pants, bartender shirts are going to do it. We will be looking like clowns on May 1st. Try not to laugh in our faces, we didn’t want to wear them.

As a furloughed Flight Attendant from the only airline that has not called back most or all of it’s furloughees and is actually furloughing more so they can announce new routes on “Connection Partners”, I think it’s great that the great admirers of Leo Mullin still support whatever idiotic decisions this bunch (the ones that hired “Mr. I’ve Pillaged, and now me and my VPs need to get outta here”) are the same ones who one give their first born to these jerks regardless of what stupid decisions they make. Oh yes, I recall all the great comments passengers make about the uniforms when their flight is late, they are overbooked, or they are in lines for hours trying to fix a problem due to a lack of manpower. They always say “I may be late but WOW that uniform looks great” or “I know I can’t get on this flight that was overbooked but those Flight Attendants boarding the plane look great. Where can I stand in another line to call someone on a phone in Asia to tell them I am impressed with these stunning uniforms?” All you blue-blood Delta die hard employees, spare us your blue-eyed naive statements like the previous ones above. NOBODY in their right mind thinks that probably the most financially stable airline after 9/11 needs more bad press and to spend more money. And for those of you who don’t think Delta sees the money, recall the famous PR about 10 years ago about how much they save by removing the lettuce leaf from under the chicken salad in first class………….

Those new uniforms are hideous….they should of used the money for uniforms on weight trainers and diet plans for all those fatty flight attendants that company now employs. I just can’t see how a person can help you exit a plane in an emergency if they can’t fit between the seats? And if you say having a weight requirement to be a flight attendant is discrimination…..remember a plane uses weight and balance to help its stability in the air and the employees on that plane should do their best to keep their weight within check to help compensate for all the cargo and other fattys flying.

Replacement uniforms may cost money but designing new ones cost even more! Why is a company that lays off a good many people and lowers pay making new uniforms? The money could be better spent.

This is a classic ploy by management to divert the attention of workers from the things that are critical to their careers. If there is anyone awake at Delta, it should be obvious that unless they deal with the pilots, there won’t be an airline.

First of all, even though I myself am responding, I’m not sure why this story is even news worthy! Why would the general public care what Delta’s flight attendants are wearing? Second, a lot of the comments are talking about cost. Other than what the company paid the designer, I believe the flight attendants pay for their own uniforms. But, with this said, if the company is in a situation of possibly closing it’s doors, why would they burden their flight attendants with the cost of all new uniforms? And as for their design, they are ridiculous! If I were employed there, or a passenger looking to a flight attendant for assistance, I would want the uniform to be a pair of loose fitting pants, an easy to wear blouse and flats!!! They should be dressing for their job, not a runway! These women have to bend and stretch and walk back and forth up and down the aisles for hours. Why on earth should they wear a wraparound dress and spike heals???? Do any of the airlines dress their flight attendants appropriately? I guess I’ve never really paid much attention to what they wear.

You know, I keep seeing the comment ‘this was paid for before the bankruptcy’; so has the word CANCEL ever come to mind? (With my history flying on Delta, they know the word well) How do you explain to the bankruptcy courts that you can’t pay your expenses, but you can continue to accrue more of them?

Well, I’ve read all of the comments and I agree with just about everyone that this is not the best time to come out with new F/A uniforms. However, since that is obviously out of everyone else’s control, let’s take a close look. These uniforms are designed with a sleek and slender F/A in mind. We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but Delta is obviously totally blind when comes to hiring F/A’s. Most of them are overweight, sloppily dressed and have bad attitudes to go along with the uniforms. The new uniforms will look great on someone from the age of 18-35 and weighing in at no heavier than 130 lbs. After that you get all of the slobs. I know what you’re thinking, all of that was sacrificed so that we (the customers) get all of the other fringe benefits. Right? Wrong! There are no fringe benefits anymore. The planes are all nasty, smelly and very crowded. No wonder you get passengers who are irate. If my workplace was as nasty as some of these planes and if I was late like Delta is (all of the time), I would be out of a job! Come on Delta!! Clean up your act, clean up your planes and for God’s sake take care of your employees. You want to boost morale? Well, you can start by cleaning out the management team and making better decisions. Not decisions that line YOUR pockets but decisions that will give your employees a job that they can be proud of and get paid for a job well done. As for the consumers we love Delta and want you to succeed and continue to serve Atlanta.

And they are in bankruptcy?!? It is so infuriating that they hired some fashion designer to redo uniforms but yet they cut the pay of all the front of the line employees! Who cares, What they wear it is not gonna change the poor customer service of the flight attendants. Enough already! Why don’t they take care of the people and their families that really work hard!

I have never heard so many crybabies. Maybe if all you Frequent Flyers would stop refering to Flight Attendants as fat old waitresses they would treat you a little nicer when you flew. The mentality of the traveling businessman has not changed in the 40 years I have traveled. They expect flight attendants to be a personal Geisha Girl.
If DL did not take away retirement benefits such as health insurance many flight attendant would be long gone.

I used to be a Flight Attendant for Delta in the early 90s. I can understand why they might be doing something like this. The Flight Attendants have given up 20% of their salaries to help with saving the airline money (and they don’t make much to start with). They have had to deal with countless changes, bankruptcy, rumors and low moral. The new uniforms are something positive that can make them feel more enthused about their job. Trust me, you need it when passengers are grumbling and complaining on top of all the hard times the airline has gone through. The FAs end up taking the brunt of complaints, etc. from those who are negative, like many on this blog. They deserve to feel attractive and valued by their company. Please, try to be more supportive of their efforts to make you, the cranky customer, happy. In addition, I do think they are elegant and seem to fit well. A big improvement from those polyester, shapeless wonders I tolerated for 5 years!

Bad timing on the new uniforms first of all. If Delta wants to stay aloft, how about on time flights, how about a program for allowing people to use their frequent flyer miles. How about snacks and meals on flights? How about friendly and attractive flight attendants? How about just plain old good service? What happened to being very selective about choosing flight attendants? If the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders can be very choosy, so can Delta.

Delta needs to revise Song to a Hooters Air for the “Boys” how about RainbowAir. Hire all sexy hunky male FA’s. Dress then in skin tight jeans or shorts with t-shirts or tank tops. They would have to include some “Girl” flights. Dress them as truck drivers or diva girls.
Price the tickets a little more and include free cocktails. Want to bet that the service would be better than the current service on Delta, probably service with a smile. Offer business men special’s friday after work flights to destinations such as Palm Springs, Miami, New York, San Francisco.

The MALE flight attendants are sure gonna look weird in those uniforms! Purchasing uniforms is a necessary part of business, but spending more in “designer” uniforms is not a good thing with the company on the virge of going out of business. I don’t care if they wear the basic “school uniforms”…you know navy blue skirts and slacks and white blouses and shirts.

What is Delta’s next brillant idea, repaint all the aircraft for the forth time in 8 years? Call and try to make a reservation with some one in India who does not even know what state Atlanta is in. They can’t understand english, after you ask a question they have to wait for translation which takes between 5-7 minutes and all they can say is, “hold on please”. I want to be able to speak to a person WHO CAN HELP ME! And WHEN CAN I USE MY 500,000 SKY MILES. Tried again last week, all I wanted to do was pay for coach ticket and use sky miles to up grade to first class. 12 empty seats in first class but could I use my sky miles to up grade? After 45 exausting minutes on the phone to Bombay, I was told “there are no available seats to up grade to”. How can anyone run a business where every one hates management. And how can management continue to make dumb decision after dumb decision? And don’t forget the big Delta sky boxes at the Braves, Hawks, Falcons and Thrashers games. Great way to spend money Delta!

I thought the blue and grey uniforms were hideous. They needed a change. As someone who flies every week, I am happy with the strides and offerings Delta has made from a technology standpoint over the last five years. I am sorry to read such despair from employees because I think you do an excellent job. The marketing people will tell you that this change represents an image that delta wants to project. If they can’t upgrade the planes, at least this is a way to freshen up the décor.
The “put the money spent on designing my uniforms into my pocket is such a stupid argument and shows why you are not managers of this or any other company. Before you make the argument, does anyone know the total uniform cost as a fraction of total expenditures? You don’t. Well, it is a very, very, very small number. Imagine a tick on the toe of an elephant small. You do not hear employees from banks complaining when the bank makes an easier deposit slip, no uproar when UPS changed the logo or no issues when Home Depot employees are given new smocks.
Get over it. Tighten up the waist to fit in the uniforms and be happy you have a job.

As the spouse of a Delta employee who has lost almost 25% of our pay and benefits, I find it very inappropriate to be spending money on new uniforms at this time. The ones they currently wear are only 4-5 years old!! let’s save some money and get back to being a profitable entity before splurging on extravagances.

First of all folks, Delta is NOT going out of business. Delta is being driven to reiventing itself just like many other LARGE American companies that have lost touch with how they got LARGE. Uniforms are of no financial consequence when one looks at the overall scheme of things. But at least someone at the coporate level is thinking in terms of creating a NEW Delta. I repeat DELTA is NOT going out of business and in a year or so, they should be doing just fine IF the right critical decisions are made, and I think they will be. The good news is that they have more than one model to draw from as far as how to reinvent their airline, and it is a very necessary service to this country that will not be allowed to go under. As a stock holder, thats my store and I’m sticking to it.

I understand from a Delta flight attendant that these uniforms have been in the works for well over a year before bankruptcy was even an issue. I agree the timing stinks, but once a company has invested so much money, it is a waste to return the merchandise that is already been purchased.

I am a Delta Flight Attendant.
This is a comment by Tigerdog: How about friendly and attractive flight attendants? How about just plain old good service? What happened to being very selective about choosing flight attendants? If the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders can be very choosy, so can Delta.
Contributors to this blog comment on fat flight attendants with additude. With passengers like Tigerdog and others who can blame us for additude? Take a look around the gate area on your next flight. Who are all those people in flip-flops and pajama bottoms? Why they are the traveling public of course.I have taken a flight delay because we did not have enough seat belt extensions on board to accomodate obese customers.
The only reason there are flight attendants on board is safety. Passenger safety ! Do you care what the flight attendant putting out a fire in the cabin looks like as long as your life is saved? Or would you prefer “she” was 25, thin, and smiling ?
I have been flying a long time and I still love my job. It’s the Tigerdogs and others like him that ruin my day.

As a DELTA frequent flier, I don’t give a flying flip what the flight attendants wear, as long as they are wearing clothing that is comfortable and functional. That being said and also having been deployed on a hospital ship, where the one of the biggest threats to personal safety onboard is fire and having worked in a burn unit, I would be concerned about having to wear pantyhose in a plane, as it will melt to your legs in the event of a fire. Seems like cotton shirts and pants and cotton trouser socks with leather shoes would be more practical and could also be stylish.
In the meantime DELTA, all I want to do is get from Point A to Point B in one piece and with my luggage present and intact. Although it would be nice for you to lift some of the restrictions you have with the frequent flier program. They’re getting ridiculous!

Tigerdog, what is your waist size? Are you slim and attractive? How long before you’d be in the unempolyment line if your employer insisted that you be slim and attractive. Unless you’re a model, which I’d bet my life you’re not, don’t expect more than you put out. have you seen some of the passengers on planes lately? Once was the time people cared what they look dlike when they boarded a plane. Those days are over, people in the airport terminals look like people in bus stations now. If you want slim and attractive, try it on yourself first.

When did becoming a flight attendant become a career? The outfits are pointless and this is why the airlines are in trouble. You can’t have this and a 100 ticket to NY. I’d prefer the FAs be nice to me, rather than have a little dress-up party. Besides, what do the men FAs where?

I remember the days in the 60’s when Delta and other airlines hired only single girls in their early 20’s as FA and they had to “retire” or find annther job with the company once they got to about 30 or if, heaven forbid, they got married. There are plenty of attractive women who are over 30, 40 & 50 who now fly for all airlines who I would definitly be seen on the street with. Sounds like the uniform issue has been settled and they will look better than what the FAs are wearing now. However, all the comments on using frequent flyer points are on the mark and as much as Gerald would like to see tickets paid for with cash, they did award the FF points and customers should be able to use them without making reservations a year in advance.

While the new uniforms will look nice on a model’s figure, sorry to say, there are some real ‘large’ female flight attendants out there. The new red uniforms will not be attractive on them. AND, what bad timing with the bankruptcy, I could care less what they wear, I just want some good customer service AND the ability to use some of my frequent flyer miles…what a joke. I just cancelled my Delta AX card, why bother getting more miles, one can’t use them. Is Leo Mullins back and running the airline again?

It sickens me to know that people in this town have no respect or loyalty to a company that has given so much to this community over the years. I know, firsthand, the teamwork and dedication that so many Delta employees exhibit everyday from ramp workers, reservationists, gate agents, pilots, flight attendants, and general office personnel. Next time you’re flying one of those “cheap-fare, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants” outfits, remember Delta’s pilots, mechanics, and operations personnel are some of the best in the world. If anything were to go wrong, I would want them in control - professionals with top-notch training and experience. By the way, you whiny Delta employees (a minority with BIG mouths) - if you’re so miserable go find another job! Delta will never succeed with people like you anyway.
