Where are you headed in 2006?

A new year ahead means new places to explore. Have you made plans yet?

I have my eye on Spain and on Costa Rica as foreign destinations. I’d like to go back to the West and Northwest, my picks for the most beautiful sections of the United States, or maybe hit some states I haven’t been to: North and South Dakota and Montana. If the travel genie offered me a wish, or someone gave me a winning lottery ticket, I’d take the around-the-world tour.

On Jan. 1, look for some suggestions in Travel for a pricey dream vacation — and a budget version of the same trip.

Some travel experts we consulted say Eastern Europe, South America and Mexico at hot spots for tourists in the coming year. If you haven’t thought about where you want to go, watch for their suggestions in the Living section early in the new year.

Meanwhile, tell me what you’ve already planned, how you’re going to spend your travel dollars. Any suggestions for don’t miss destinations? Did you get an especially good deal on travel you’ve already booked? How will you go about picking your destination this year? Will you be bargain-hunting or finally taking that splurge vacation?

We love cruising the canals of Europe. Though we have owned our owne canal boats, next time we will rent or hire a boat. This is a great trip for a family or group. We will return to England in the fall for our next trip. See www.robandmarlane.com for our travelogue.

I plan on taking my wife and daughters on a Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas in July. In November for our 10 year anniversary I am looking at St Martin, Los Angeles, or Jamaica. Do you have any information on things to do in L.A. ?

We will go to Italy and Poland. They have supported the USA in Iraq. The other countries who have not supported the USA will not get our support.

I’ll be going to Tucker to get a haircut, then at some point in the year I will go to Douglasville to visit a friend. Oh yes, I’ll drive through Doraville to get to 285. I’m tired already from all the globe trotting.

Hopefully this year I will be doing some island hoping that does not include Long Island or Staten Island! It will definetly depend on hurricane season this year.

Hi Dan

That’s an interesting comment on going to Poland and Italy because of their support for U.S. actions in Iraq. Our travel experts say Poland should be a hot destination this year. I wonder if other Americans are making similar travel plans based on support for the U.S.? Has anyone else made the same decision?

Hi Vernon

Watch from an email from me about visiting LA. I tried to post it on the blog, but something went wrong — maybe it was too long — and it wouldn’t post.

After a long stressful year, I am going on safari to Tanzania in February 2006. And then I’m going to the Outer Banks in September. I can’t wait for either trip!

I’m really envious. A safari will get you away from it all. One of my friends, who has an extremely stressful job in marketing/public relations, took off for two weeks to Kenya a few years ago and loved it. In fact, she’s planning another trip to a different area, a mutual friend told me over the holidays. I have to get in touch with her to see where she’s going and what she’s doing. What do you think will be the highlight of your trip?

I’ve already booked a trip to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for mid February. On the way back, I’m stopping through Montevideo, Uruguay, Buenos Aires, Argentina, then finally Bogota, Colombia. I’m looking into going to Australia this Fall for 2 weeks. Can’t wait to see what happens!

Since I’ve never been on a safari, I can’t imagine what the highlight will be. I’m looking forward to photographing as much as I can, and enjoying the scenery. The only down side is all of the shots I had to get.

I am going to Honolulu in February. This will be my first time to Hawaii. I usually stick to the caribbean, since it’s closer and very pretty. Would love to get some pointers on where to go and must do’s while there. Also going to San Diego in August and planning my big “30th” birthday in the awesome caribbean island of St. John.

Jennifer, I am a San Diego native, who also lived in Hawaii for two years. On Hawaii, my advice is stick to the Carribean. Hawaii is the same, just further away and more expensive. If you are committed to going, then spend your time on the Windward side of the island. Head out to the North Shore and stop at Pipeline and Waimeia Bay. The waves should be really big in February, so I strongly advise that you NOT go in the water on the North Shore. The waves are too big. Hang out in Halaeiwa and have lunch at one of the local places. The best thing to eat in Hawaii is a plate lunch. I recommend you find an L&L Drive-Inn. If you want to do the tourist trap thing, you should hit the PCC (Polynesian Cultural Center). It is a good overall perspective of the different cultures found on the islands and in the Pacific Rim. Stay away from Ala Moana Mall in Waikiki. It’s ridiculously overpriced and shopkeepers tend to ignore mainlanders, and cater to the very wealthy Japanese tourists. There are many, many more things to do there. Be warned, Waikiki is packed at the time of year, and street crime can be high. Watch your belongings closely. As for San Diego, you are now talking about God’s country. The most beautiful city in the U.S., as far as I’m concerned. Beware, the weather will be quite warm in August, but nothing as oppressive as the South. The tourist things to do are: Sea World, The truly world famous San Diego Zoo, Old Town, Seaport Village and of course, Tijuana. I would discourage you from crossing the border. It’s depressing, dirty and quite honestly, not the safest place. You should DEFINTELY do the following: visit the Hotel Del Coronado (hoteldel.com), go to the Del Mar Races (where the turf meets the surf www.dmtc.com) and follow that up with dinner in Del Mar at Pacifica Del Mar , spend time in La Jolla and watch the seals at the Cove. Great restaurants in La Jolla: Top of the Cove, George’s at the Cove. shop in Fashion Valley, eat at the Old Town Mexican Cafe (everything is great!), have drinks at night the Top of The Hyatt in Downtown San Diego next to Seaport Village. Spend time in the Gaslamp District. There are a lot of great restaurants and clubs. Catch a Padres game at Petco Park. Depending on how long you’re in town, head up north on the 15 to Temecula and tour the wineries. Like golfing? Try to get a tee-time at Torrey Pines. Nothing like golf overlooking the blue Pacific. Just spent 5 days there over Christmas and almost cried when I had to leave. Nothing like sunny, 75 degrees and shorts, tank-top and flip-flops in December! Have fun!

Hi Barb! Thanks for the great tips on Oahu. My husband’s company will be sending us out there for part of a week. Unfortunately, during that time we will be in a hotel in Waikiki. The balance of our trip, I am thinking about renting a house. I am looking at Kailua and Lanikai. I have not started planning San Diego yet, but will print this out and keep it. Thanks again….

In November, after the 2006 Georgia elections, a group of friends and myself will be chartering a catamaran and sailing around the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the still somewhat undiscovered Spanish Virgin Islands. We can’t wait!

I will be visiting the Mouse in May and will take another break in November. Most likely, a Carnival cruise is in order so that I may get away from work and some of the wackiness in my family.

We’re going to Maui in March. It’ll be our third time there and we’ll be celebrating my parents wedding anniversary (with them, of course!) This will be my last big trip for 2006 because I’m pregnant and due in early July. If my last ‘06 trip has to be Maui, I’m happy :)

Miss B I went to Dubai past Spring. It was like a cleaner version of NYC. We went boating, sandblasting, saw all the gardens, beach, lakes, museum & malls. Definately shop for gold (at the Gold Suk)& see the beautiful hotels-Burj al Arab & Jumera. The food is also really good.

Any UGA fan cannot miss the game this year against Ole Miss. Fly into Memphis and stay in Tunica at Sam’s Town or any of the other casinos. The UGA Alumni Assoc. will run a bus from Sam’s to Oxford for the game. Of course, the obligatory yearly trip to Vegas is in order. If you didn’t take advantage of the Coca-Cola-Wendy’s-Air Tran deal, shame on you. I saved $500 on my flights. Lastly, fly into Flagstaff, AZ in July to visit every national park between there and Billings, MT. My advice- don’t die until you’ve seen Yellowstone and the surrounding area. It stole my soul.
