Off the beaten path
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When we ran a story on visiting Kiev a couple of weeks ago, I was fascinated by a place that’s so remote and so difficult to visit, it’s unlikely I’ll ever be able to go there. An AJC staffer, Wayne Snow, who’s been intrigued by things Russian for years, wrote about the uncommon beauty of this place so close to Chernobyl.
I’ve been getting e-mails about the story from others who know they’ll never see the area, but were captured by the story nonetheless. Wayne tells me he’s going back to Ukraine next year, and this time he plans to also visit the Chernobyl site. I can’t wait to hear about how that trip turns out.
So, I’ve been wondering if some of you have similar stories of visits to remote and difficult places that captured your heart. And if you’d be willing to share them so we can arm-chair travel? What’s the most exotic or unlikely destination you’ve visited and what made you want to go there? Please tell.
