The Staff
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We found the staff to be very nice, helpful and interesting (all except for the one lady at the spa). I was worried about having a cabin steward in and out of our room. I thought it would be intrusive. He wasn’t at all and kept us very orderly. We gave him an extra $10 at the end of the cruise.
Mary and Gary King of Raleigh weren’t as lucky. Their cabin steward left sandy wet beach towels in their room for 24 hours after the shore day. Mary was not pleased.
Ellen and Jim Tyson, of Arlington, Va., didn’t like their cabin steward either. He didn’t empty their trash can ever.
The only other staff I had any issue with was our head waiter. He recommended the disappointing shrimp and I didn’t trust his judgment after that. We really like our assistant waiter and tipped him extra as well.

We sailed on Holland America in Alaska, as I had posted in previous posts in the cruise threads. The staff was absolutely wonderful! They were polynesian for the most part, and were always eager to please. I was concerned about service because Holland America has a tipping policy where they charge a certain amount to your room every day, and I was worried that the staff would feel that the tips were a “gimme” and not provide good service. Boy was I wrong! Our cabin steward was very unobtrusive, always took care of everything in the room, and we never wanted for anything. All the servers were great as well. We had no complaints on service! So for us the tipping policy was nice because we didn’t have to figure out how much to tip or place cash in envelopes on the last night, which is what we heard other cruise lines do. The service was so great we even kicked in some more at the end. Holland America made it so easy, and service was wonderful. I would highly recommend them!
